Game 35: Happy birthday, Yogi

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

Yogi Berra turns 86 years young today, and I’m pretty sure he’s seen more baseball and knows more about the game than all of us combined. I hope the Yankees’ gift to him a big blowout win over the Royals tonight. Happy birthday, Yogi. Here’s the starting nine…

Derek Jeter, DH
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B – I guess the ol’ melon is okay after yesterday’s plunking
Nick Swisher, RF
Brett Gardner, LF
Eduardo Nunez, SS – over/under on the number of bad throws is set at 2.5
Frankie Cervelli, C – guessing that Joe Girardi wants to use Russell Martin in all three games vs. Boston

Ivan Nova, SP

You can watch this game on YES locally or MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Note: The Yankees will play a day-night doubleheader in Baltimore on August 27th to make up for the April 22nd rain out. That a Saturday five days into a 16 games in 16 days stretch, so a) they’ll need to call up a spot starter, and b) it might wreck the bullpen. But then again, it’s more than three months away, so who knows.

  1. JGS says:

Three bad throws in a game is a lot, even for him. I’ll take the under, but not by much.

    • Thomas says:

Matter what bad throw is considered. A throwing error or just a throw requiring a good pick by Teixeira. If it is error alone, I’d take the under. If it is the latter though, I definitely considered the over.

  2. General Tsao says:

Offense needs to step up and take the series. Robertson and possibly Mo won’t be available. We need those guys for the next series so please just blow them out.

  3. Jericho Spade says:

Mike, since when do you run this site by yourself?

  4. Urban says:

I was going to ask the over/under on Nunez regarding errors, as opposed to bad throws. Sad that’s what Nunez has become in the early going. According to A-Rod, Nunez needs to take a a step in so he’s not constantly rushing his throws.

  5. Sabermetrically Challenged says:

What happened to that slider/cutter Nova was supposed to be using?

  6. Cy Pettitte says:

they better pound this shit out of this guy, I can’t sit through a repeat of last night

    • Urban says:

The Yankees have too many guys scuffling along right now, including A-Rod, Martin, Posada, even Cano. I sense an explosion coming, hopefully in time for this weekend’s series.

  7. Jerome S. says:

    “Derek Jeter, DH”

    Less of this.

  8. Urban says:

Didn’t this guy pitch a great game against the Yankees last year, but I think he was on another team. Or am I confushing my Irish pitchers?

Based on Jeter and Granderson, they must think he throws a lot of first-pitch junk.

  9. Jerome S. says:

Remember when O’Sullivan totally shut us down last year andthat was THE MOST FRUSTRATING GAME IN HISTORY? We have one of those once every 2 weeks.

  10. jon says:

nice catch but youre still a tool for being a grown ass man and brining a glove to the game

  11. BigTimeBartolo says:

9 pitches in the first inning for O’Sullivan. That’s unacceptable.

  12. Greg says:

We cant go into the Red Sox series losing 2 of 3 to the Royals.

  13. Esteban says:

    Eric Hosmer is a MAN

  14. Cy Pettitte says:

  15. Greg says:

The Hos has done it again

  16. Mike Axisa says:

    That was a cookie.

  17. Jerome S. says:

So this Hosmer guy ain’t no Shelley Duncan…

  18. BigTimeBartolo says:

I can tell already this Hosmer kid is the real deal

  19. Thomas Cassidy says:

Gonna be nice to have Hosmer playing first base in six years.

  20. Greg says:

Looks like Nova’s reverting back to form

  21. Jerome S. says:

Betemit just… just pisses me off… even when he strikes out…

  22. Cy Pettitte says:

fucking Melky making Cano play badly

  23. Urban says:

    Oh, come on, Robbie.

  24. BigTimeBartolo says:

You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.

Looks like the bullshit is carrying over from last night

  25. Urban says:

This is a comedy. A bad one.

  26. Cy Pettitte says:

    TV off in 3…2…1….

  27. BigTimeBartolo says:

Oh my god this is like a train wreck in slow motion. Fucking sloppy as hell

  28. Thomas Cassidy says:

Looks like we’ll be playing like a sloppy team again tonight.

  29. YankeesJunkie says:

So…who wants to do some meth? Can’t be any worse than this game thus far.

  30. jon says:

cant wait for O’Sullivan 3 hit shutout

  31. mike c says:

    nunez and cervelli suck ass

  32. A-Rod's Wingman says:

Is it okay to want ro turn it off after six outs?

    • YankeesJunkie says:

Not only down by 2, once we get to three or above you can start switching channels back and forth.

  33. Rey22 says:

Yeah….I’m thinking this is one of those games I’m not even gonna bother watching. I’ll catch the recap later…

  34. Thomas Cassidy says:

Maybe the Royals can pull a Yankee here and not score.

  35. Jerome S. says:

    This shit again…

  36. the tenth inning stretch says:

  37. Urban says:

Is this the year of the inflield hit?

  38. First Time Poster says:

Oh, jeez… for a second I thought I was on a blog that was for Yankee fans… good thing it’s just for people who apparently think a 0-1 deficit in the top of the second against the Royals is an insurmountable score… god the Yankees suck!

  39. BigTimeBartolo says:

Infield single or Arod being slow? Probably both

Terrible, i dont even want to watch this shit

  40. Jerome S. says:

When I grow up, I’m gonna be a big boy and come through with RISP.

  41. BigTimeBartolo says:

    Jesus christ. This is brutal

  42. jon says:

back to the nova we all knew he was

  43. the tenth inning stretch says:

    Darn you Melky.

  44. Mike Axisa says:

Awful. All because they didn’t turn the DP.

  45. YankeesJunkie says:

Pain and agony. Hopefully the Yanks offense can explode for 15 runs or something like because this is closer to shit than baseball.

  46. Greg says:

SHould we have traded Melky? Have to ask

  47. forensic says:

Since this team is basically unwatchable right now, looks like Jorge had a little hissy fit during the pregame with reporters. Anyone else moderately hopeful for a mid-season retirement?

    • Thomas Cassidy says:

      What happened with Posada?

      • 101010 says:

He didn’t want to spoil Yogi’s birthday. Too bad the rest of his team is doing a fine job of just that.

      • forensic says:

NEW YORK ? After what appeared to be his best night at the plate in a while (2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks) in last night’s extra-innings loss to Kansas City, it looked as though Jorge Posada might have been joining teammates Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter in a resurgence at the plate.
But when asked how his swing felt before batting practice this afternoon, Posada simply offered: “The team is doing good, that’s all I want to talk about.”
Posada, who is not in tonight’s lineup, answered plenty of questions about a full-time transition to the designated hitter role in Spring Training. Joe Girardi said he’d have to work on developing a routine to feel comfortable. But even after a two-hit night, he didn’t seem optimistic that would happen, and broke off a session with reporters after a few questions.
First, on the routine, Posada doesn’t see it happening.
“I don’t have a routine. No. I don’t think it’s going to be there,” Posada, who is in the final year of his contract, said. “When you play for so long and you’re behind the plate for so long and you have a routine there. When you pinch hit four times it’s not easy.”
He would not say whether there was anything about the designated hitter role that he actually preferred to catching.
“I’m not catching so I can’t even talk about catching, it’s about DHing and it’s really, it’s coming to the point where I have to understand my job and go out there and keep swinging the bat,” he said.
And when asked if the lack of routine could have contributed to the slow start — a .162 batting average and a .273 OBP — Posada left his locker and the clubhouse toward an area restricted to reporters.

That’s via Conor Orr. Brian Heyman had a similar take.

  48. Jerome S. says:

    BAbip evens out eventually…

  49. first time lawng time says:

So I went to bed went it was2-1, judging from comments, should I be glad I missed theending?

  50. King George says:

Ok, can we now all agree that these last few games (except for AJ) is how the pitching really was supposed to be?

  51. jon says:

  52. Mike Axisa says:

    Jesus fucking Christ.

  53. Cy Pettitte says:

    oh dear lord.

  54. Greg says:

    Cue Benny Hill music

  55. the tenth inning stretch says:

    Holy crap. This in ridiculous.

  56. Klingy says:

this team just loves to lose to crappy ass teams!!! OH GODDDD DAMMIT CERVELLI U PIECE OF SHIT!!! CERVELLI AND NUNEZ SHOULD GO BACK TO LITTLE LEAGUE!!!

  57. mike c says:

that’s it, pack your bags cervelli it’s time for jesus

  58. Urban says:

Ummm, I’m going to temporarily turn off all electronics, have a shot of tequila, and then hope things improve.

  59. Esteban says:

  60. BKLYN says:

I think Cano’s had a misplay in a majority of the games that Nova has pitched, which have led to a big inning for the opposing team.

  61. Thomas Cassidy says:

How the fuck can the look this shitty without trying? Fuck this I can’t watch this.

  62. Rob says:

This is going to be a loooooooooooooong night!

  63. jon says:

could jesus really be worse than this?

  64. BigTimeBartolo says:

This is absolute insanity. How many unearned runs is that now? Fuck this. Fuck this shit.

Play fucking good baseball, not this little league shit

  65. first time lawng time says:

This team looks like a pile of dog shit.

  66. jon says:

the royals have just as many runs and MORE hits than they did over 11 innings last night

  67. Cy Pettitte says:

Gustavo Molina and Ramiro Pena please

  68. Greg says:

The Red Sox are going kick our ass

  69. Thomas Cassidy says:

  70. the tenth inning stretch says:

Come on Nova. Geez, 2 botched DPs in one inning.

  71. Cy Pettitte says:

  72. YankeesJunkie says:

This team needs to spend five hours on fielding drills.

  73. Esteban says:

    OMG :(

  74. Thomas Cassidy says:

  75. King George says:

  76. jon says:

when did we trade for lackey?

  77. Just when it couldn’t get any worse.

  78. YankeesJunkie says:

Mike, you should just post a recap now and get some sleep.

  79. Mojo says:

Adios 1st Place. Hola Red Sox. Thank Jesus fucking Montero I won’t be around a TV this weekend.

  80. Baseball jesus says:

    Cervelli needs to go

  81. BigTimeBartolo says:

Oh my god. This is insane. We’ve basically lost the game already. All because of unbelievably shitty defense.

  82. aRX says:

After watching this monstrosity, I honestly don’t give a fuck if we come back. This deserves to be a loss.

  83. BigTimeBartolo says:

The inning finally ends. Could we please just play some GOOD baseball PLEASE

  84. the tenth inning stretch says:

That was the most embarrassing inning of baseball I’ve ever witnessed. Unbelieveable.

  85. dennis says:

this was a punt by joe the second he put nunez and cervelli in the line up.

  86. Across the pond says:

I keep thinking it can’t get much worse, i’ll stay awake and try and wait for us to come back..

    But it keeps getting worse.

  87. Cuso says:

great way to head into the boston serie

  88. mike c says:

it’s time for montero, there’s no reason to have a terrible defensive catcher that can’t swing the bat

  89. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Good game so far.

  90. first time lawng time says:

    6-0 in 1.2 innings…this team is pathetic.

What the fuck is this shit? I though these were the Yankees. Aren’t they supposed to beat shit teams like Detroit and KC?

Boston is going to be fuuuuun…looks like we’re gona be swept for the first time!!!!!

  91. jon says:

Im not sure whats going to annoy me more, this inning or the next 8 when O’Sullivan shuts the yankees down

    • epy0n says:

Right? Why does this happen to use we are all now hitting the ball into the ground, not just A-Rod. UGH.

  92. BigTimeBartolo says:

Girardi needs to take the team into the locker room after the game and just beat the shit out of every single player so playing such disgracefully atrocious baseball. Then someone needs to beat the shit out of Girardi just because…well the bunting i guess…

  93. jon says:

on the bright side: we may get to see swisher pitch tonight

  94. Jeter's past says:

    Worst Inning EVER

  95. forensic says:

Well, I’m sure this weekend will be fun and totally stress free…

  96. king of fruitless hypotheticals says:

SOOOO…I forgot to start Matt Cain today and Ubaldo Jimenez got rocked, so I picked up Nova to start cause “opponents are hitting .181 in their last 67 plate appearances agains the young Yankee starter…”

  97. YankeesJunkie says:

Bull fucking shit ump. BULL FUCKING SHIT!

  98. first time lawng time says:

THAT WAS in the BATTERS BOX DBAG!!!!!!!!!!!

  99. Matt says:

Cry me a river. This team is in a slump? They’ve been playing terrible baseball for two and a half weeks now. I don’t care what KC’s record is, because outside of their bullpen, they are a mediocre team despite what their numbers look like so far.

That inning was the most disgraceful performance by far of this season. Cano’s throw was not that bad, Nunez is just a bad shortstop. Nova had an easy 1-6-3 DP and botched it to allow another run. Cervelli’s defense is terrible, he led the league in catching errors last year despite being a backup and showed more of why that was the case tonight.

I don’t want to hear any more excuses. Boo hoo, guys are slumping. They’ve been slumping for weeks now, why can’t they make the adjustment? Why can’t they make routine plays in the field? These guys are better than this, but you are only as good as what you do on the field.

  100. BigTimeBartolo says:

Also Cervelli needs to go. For someone who has the reputation of being a good defensive catcher, he really makes a shit load of errors. Fuck Cervelli

  101. jon says:

well at least arod still has a good eye even if the ump doesnt

  102. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Lots of MachaJoe’s tonight.

    • BigTimeBartolo says:

dude that inning was not major league caliber baseball. These guys are professionals, no fuck that, they are the fucking NEW YORK YANKEES. They need to play with some fucking dignity, not that shit.

  103. Klingy says:

  104. Preston says:

I’m embarrassed by the brand of baseball we are playing. It is slop. passed balls, errant throws, hanging pitches, pathetic at bats. If I wanted to root for a team with talent that didn’t live up to it because they played like losers I’d be a fucking Mets fan!

  105. It'sATarp says:

I’ll be happy the day Nova is out of the rotation…Well now his ERA is matching his xFIP…

  106. first time lawng time says:

“here’s another Yankees who’s been struggling”

  107. Kostas says:

Yankees getting their asses handed to them. They should be so proud…Pathetic!

  108. Klingy says:

good work jerkoffs! got some great offense tonight i could see!!!

  109. Greg says:

    ESPN is gonna love this

  110. Jerome S. says:

  111. Guest says:

Perhaps its time for everyone to work on their zen baseball techniques.

They have been playing poorly for a while, yes. And tonight has been ugly (so far), no doubt.

But we are about 60 games away from justifying anything close to resembling the panic in this thread.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    • BigTimeBartolo says:

Yeah ok, don’t understand it though dude. It’s been Sarah-Jessica-Parker Ugly…

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Yes, it’s ugly. Yes, they’re playing shitty baseball. But it’s nothing they can’t recover from — especially in May. Pop that bottle of chill pills.

        • BigTimeBartolo says:

Of course they can recover, it’s just frustrating as hell to watch your team play such shitty baseball. Especially on defense with the freaking errors. You can be fine with it but it pisses me off and I’m venting my frustration. So no, I wont be taking any “chill pills”, asshole

          • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I was just kidding, the Yankees will never recover from this. The seasons over kbye.

            • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

              0vurrrr…we’re d0000000med!!!!!!!! ALKJSDFLKAJSFHHHAHAHAH wah.

              • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

We should just tip our caps and call the Royals our daddy. WAAAHHHHHH OVER D0000MMMMEEEEDDDDDD lkjsdflkjasdfljasd im venting grrrrrrrrrrrr

                • BigTimeBartolo says:

Your that kind of guy who thinks he’s hilarious by sarcastically making fun of everyone else, but actually everyone hates that guy

      • Preston says:

I really laughed at the horse face reference and with the inner rage this game is giving me that’s an accomplishment.

    • Kostas says:

Good point. However, the number of games is less than 60 because they are trending towards continuing their current performance. This is not a great team but an above average team. They require too many pieces to be functioning at once in order to be the dominant team they should be. There are many holes in the bull pen, lack of control in the starting rotation, and the offense, well, it is becoming Oakland A’s like. That said, they may still win 85+ games and make the playoffs.

  112. Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

When did this place become Lohud?

  113. the tenth inning stretch says:

    There we go, A-Rod.

  114. Kostas says:

Yanks are heading to a sweep by the Sox and then by the Rays at the rate they are going.

  115. Guest says:

Also, after having 5 months off and playing what felt like game a week in early april, they are now playing their 19th game in 20 days. Perhaps they haven’t yet readjusted to the grind and fatigue is playing a role in the sloppiness.

IMHO, the most likely result is: The Yanks will have another great regular season, make the playoffs, and this will be one of those game threads we look back on at the end of the season to laugh at our in-game hyperbole.

    • Thomas Cassidy says:

Not this year. They suck this year.

      • Guest says:

Sweet merciful crap, I really hope you are kidding and my sarcasm detector is just off.

You know what, I’m just going to presume that’s the case. The alternative would make my head explode.

    • first time lawng time says:

Fatigue is bullshit. Unless you’re a pitcher baseball is not by any means physically demanding.

    • jetrer says:

“fatigue is playing a role in the sloppiness”
Nunez and Cervelli are fatigued from playing once a week?

    • forensic says:

Well, it’s reassuring that you think it’s fatigue. At least they don’t play another 13 games in a row or anything… It’s not like this is their career that they should be prepared for or anything.

      • Guest says:

It was just a theory. It could clearly be wrong.

Whatever the reason, they’ve still only played 34 games this year, have a ton of talent, and a pretty strong track record of finishing the season with enough wins to make the playoffs.

  116. It'sATarp says:

Shit we’re losing a game…end of the world!

on the side note: i still hate watching Nova pitch…

  117. Klingy says:

how the hell were we ever in first place during this season so far???

    • It'sATarp says:

because we don;t play this shitty every game?

How the hell are you a yankees fan again? Hop of the wagon now if you want

      • Klingy says:

i’m a yankees fan from birth, and always will be, even tho this team is really suckin it lately

        • It'sATarp says:

It happens…Nova ain’t pitching every game and this offense and defense won’t be this shitty every game either

    • Guest says:

Because everyone loses in baseball and has crappy stretches? If they lose 48 more times this year…48 more times where they “suck” or at least “suck more than their opponent at scoring runs than night,” you know what they’ll be:

A 100 win team and likely owners of the best record in the AL.

      • It'sATarp says:

Nah we should panic because this game is obviously a perfect representation of the yankee’s true talent.

    • Because we scored a lot more runs than the other teams.

  118. Yo! I'm Chris says:

    So I guess they’re losing?

  119. It'sATarp says:

Buchholz has a FIP of 5 and a xFIP of 4.81…sounds like a good for the offense to wake up tomorrow.

  120. forensic says:

What the hell is Nova doing using his glove there? They must’ve forgotten to tell him he’s supposed to bend down for the ball only to have it go off his fingertips.

  121. Matt says:

It’s just one game… and then it’s just two games… and then it’s just three games.

But hey, look on the bright side. These games only count as ties until it’s July (or so you’d think from reading the comments on this blog).

Nobody is saying they are done or they will not turn it around because they are playing poorly now. Don’t put words in people’s mouths.

The fact of the matter is that this isn’t just a usual slump, this is a 3 week stretch of awful play by the entire team. It’s hard to think of a time when they’ve been this bad for this long in the last few years outside of last September. If you cannot acknowledge that their performance has been embarrassing, then you simply are delusional.

This team deserves criticism right now given the way they have been playing lately. When you keep posting that it “doesn’t matter” or that the poster is “overreacting,” all it does is make you look like like a jerk.

    • Kostas says:

Well said, especially that it is POOR PLAY, not just a slump here or there.

    • It'sATarp says:

I usually try to be rational, but this isn’t helping my irrational hate of nova. I really hate Nova…

    • Mojo says:

Thank you! Finally. They’ve been playing like shit and I cannot stand(!!!) when people try to rub it off as just one game or a bad series. I honestly don’t have much faith in anyone outside of Cano, Granderson, and, yes, Montero. I’m not convinced that Tex is a .300 hitter anymore or that Alex will rebound. Jeter… well, yeah… Posada’s toast. Swisher just looks ugly and it truly pains me to say that because I love the guy. I’ll still give Martin the benefit of the doubt, but Gardner, I don’t know. The guy just can’t quite seem to utilize the tools he was given. In no way, no what whatsoever, has this team convinced that it’s championship caliber. I don’t get that feeling like I did in 2009. What pains me the most, however, is the delusion of some commenters. The Yankees look broken, and, for the first time in a long time, I’m not sure if they’re capable of fixing themselves. Speaking of fixing myself . . . anyone know of any good new porn sites?

  122. Kostas says:

This made me laugh. But it shouldn’t stop with just those two.

    KeithOlbermann Keith Olbermann
Honest to goodness, if Eduardo Nunez and Francisco Cervelli want to come to Yankee Stadium they ought to have to buy tickets

  123. Mark says:

I knew this game was coming, after last nights implosion. Good thing the NBA is on…

  124. BigTimeBartolo says:

I think im past being pissed off at this game. I know it wont happen but the idea of O’Sullivan throwing a perfect game would be absolutely hilarious. Just so bad that you have to laugh at it

  125. JohnnyC says:

So the obstacle to us getting Cliff Lee was Eduardo Nunez? You got to be kidding, Cash.

  126. Klingy says:

GAME OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STUPID MOTHER FUCKING TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!

  127. the tenth inning stretch says:

    Holy crap, even Melky?

    • murakami says:

what the fuck does that mean? Melky sucks? It’s your ability to assess talent that sucks. Melky is not only ONLY 26, he was developing a power stroke for our park left-handed when stupid decided to trade him. Now, he’s racking up doubles in a park that encourages them, instead of pulling shots into the RF seats for us.

Good for Melky, who got bounced for a guy who can’t hit the ball out of the infield. He’s also got four walks in this series. Javy fucking Vazquez for Melky AND Vicai-fucking-ino. Not Cashman’s finest hour.

    • murakami says:

sorry, that was kind of harsh. I admit I’m bitter they traded Cabrera. Worse, I get sick of the swipes at the guy. My apologies for being so rude.

  128. epy0n says:

Where is the bullpen management now? I mean we need to get Nova out of this game 7 runs is already to deep.

  129. Time to watch The Daily Show.

  130. Kostas says:

At this point you just leave Nova in there to take a beating. There is no fucking way in hell that the Yankees are winning this one…

  131. BigTimeBartolo says:

Nova needs to go, he looks terrible. He’s only really had like 2-3 good starts. Really dissapointing so far. And as I say that Nova gives up a double.

  132. Stratman9652 says:

I don’t normally give up on games, and I’m usually one of the guys saying “it’s still early” but this just fucking sucks.

  133. It'sATarp says:

Can we get rid of Nova now? this is just him regressing to his bloated xFIP near 5…

  134. Erica says:

Sooooooooooooo I’m totally going to my friend’s BBQ now. Great game kids. I NEVER give up early but shit. SHIT. You guys. SHIT.

  135. 101010 says:

Look at the bright side. We get to see Sanit pitch.

    Oh wait…

  136. Kostas says:

This is funny…. in a “that person just slipped ice and fell on their ass” kind of way.

  137. Across the pond says:

I know the pen was taxed yesterday but you have to end this.

  138. the tenth inning stretch says:

Yay for at least getting to see Sanit.

  139. BigTimeBartolo says:

This is unbearable. And now we get to see what Amaury Sanit has got. Whoopee…

  140. first time lawng time says:

This team has looked like crap since they came back from the All-Star break.

  141. forensic says:

Sure hope they have a lot of Geno and Yogi video cued up and things to talk about the rest of the night.

    • 101010 says:

Would be more interesting to see them give Geno a glove and send him to short. I wonder if he can make a throw to first…

      • the tenth inning stretch says:

While they’re at it, might as well see if Yogi can take over for Cervelli behind the plate.

  142. bonestock94 says:

lol, was about to turn on the game and then I saw the boxscore.

  143. Klingy says:

this score makes me want to puke

  144. Bob Stone says:

The team has just been playing ugly . . . really ugly! This too will pass. They are better than this.

  145. wow says:

so glad I’m not watching this game.

  146. first time lawng time says:

If I were Girardi, I’d pull everyone from tge field and put in bench players….give them a message.

  147. Pastadivingarod says:

    Quick fix
    Bring up jesus and sisco
Cervelli and carlyle can go down
This gives another lefty and some bench power
Not ready to shit can nova yet

  148. forensic says:

So, who’s on tomorrows Scranton shuttle since Sanit should be toast after tonight? Starter like Noesi? Reliever like Whelan? Wonder if they’re already on the horn to Scranton telling them to keep someone out of the game at all costs?

  149. BigTimeBartolo says:

Grandy is really the only player worth watching on the team right now.

  150. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Happy Birthday Yogi!!!! We all chipped in and got you this second-place standing, hope ya like it!!!

  151. It'sATarp says:

Hopefully this slump means we’ll wake up during the sox series and kick em in the nuts! yay for optimism

  152. the tenth inning stretch says:

    Sanit actually doesn’t look awful.

  153. greg says:

    thank you sanit….

  154. James G. says:

Hi, I’m the Yankees – I lose two of three at home to the Royals. Go team!

[Is it just me, or do the losses like yesterday really get me down – seems like they’ve had more than their fair share since the season started…)

    • first time lawng time says:

Well the 3-4 road trip didn’t help. Especially losing to Detroit and splitting with Chi before.

  155. the tenth inning stretch says:

Yanks’ master plan was to let the Royals bat for a long time to O’Sullivan would get stiff on the bench. Joke’s on him!

  156. forensic says:

Well, at least with 20 pitches per inning Sanit can get them through the 6th and then it’s time for The Formula to finish it off!

    • Preston says:

Well if we’re still getting raped I pitch Sanit until his arm falls off and then option him back down. At least then we can salvage one positive thing out of this game, a fresh bullpen for Boston.

  157. Kostas says:

Yanks are going to get no hit… you can just feel it.

  158. the tenth inning stretch says:

    Teix, you tease.

  159. Zack says:

This game is a disgrace, even more than last night.
    Changes need to be made..NOW

  160. BigTimeBartolo says:

    oh BABIP, you bitch

  161. first time lawng time says:

This is actually all a dream, guys. In a few minutes we will all wake up to watch a team who knows how to field balls, whose players can actually get runners in when there are runners on base, an who has a bullpen that is reliable And a starter that hasn’t put your team out of the game in the first 2 innings.

It’s all just a dream guys. It just happens to be extremely vivid and you can’t remember going to sleep.

    No worries.

    • Will says:

I’ve been reading this hilarious game thread and decided I would make one response, to the most asinine comment in the whole thread…so YOU WIN!

This is the first game ALL SEASON not started by Phil Hughes in which the Yankees have been put in a huge hole early by a starting pitcher!

And to those who think Nova should be sent down/DFA’d/etc…really? Pitchers have bad starts, especially young ones. Following your logic, we should have dumped CC after his two shitty starts on the last road trip.

  162. murakami says:

We have a more important series looming. I’d rather get clobbered and spare the bullpen than lose 3-1. Cano probably should have had another day. That would have been smart. Getting hit in the head isn’t a barrel of monkeys, regardless of negative tests.

  163. Kostas says:

So the mere fact that the Yankees evaluated Nunez to be better than Pena raises some questions. Neither is worthy of being at this level and are nothing more than career AAA guys.

  164. Preston says:

On the bright side at least we aren’t struggling with runners in scoring position…

  165. first time lawng time says:

Remember when we used to hit a lot of HRs? Especially arod?

    • Pinstripes in Cali says:

Hitting too many HRs = bad baseball. that’s what all the newspapers told me. I believe them. Look. We stopped hitting HRs, and starting winning games.

  166. Erica says:

  167. Jerome S. says:

  168. the tenth inning stretch says:

Yeah Robbie! Hopefully this opens the floodgates…optimism is fun.

  169. BigTimeBartolo says:

nice robbie, still doesnt really make up for the error, but i like the effort

  170. Klingy says:

i would drink my piss if we can actually tie the game and then win it

    • first time lawng time says:

I would drink my piss if we won the game without scoring the tying run.

      • Klingy says:

holy fuck! now that’s more like it, woulda shit if he hit ANOTHER grand slam, but damn, close. got 2 runs in, NOW they wake up………ok

  171. first time lawng time says:

In all honesty let’s be real and face the facts.

    Tomorrow is Friday Friday Friday.
Everyones looking forward to tge weekend weekend.

Partying partying yeah! Fun fun fun!!!!!!

  172. Pinstripes in Cali says:

Damn, there goes O’Sullivans perfect game.

  173. Esteban says:

The comeback begins and the momentum will carry them through the weekend.

  174. Pinstripes in Cali says:

    Nunez = GIDP

  175. first time lawng time says:

    Cano has cute, little ears.

  176. Mike Axisa says:

Anyone remember that game against Texas a few years ago (2006?), when the Yankees came back from two nine-run deficits? Jorge got run over by Tex at the plate then hit the walk-off? That was awesome.

  177. Stratman9652 says:

I will shit if Frankie hits another grand slam.

  178. first time lawng time says:

Whatever i’m over this game. I’d rather they lose like this than in a heart breaking extra inning fiasco.

  179. Freddy's Mom says:

I just tuned in, very late. Um, who the eff is Sanit?!

  180. Jerome S. says:

Is Cervelli like, the clutchest player ever?

  181. the tenth inning stretch says:

When did Cervelli turn into Pujols?

  182. Erica says:

  183. Cy Pettitte says:

el oh fucking el at Cervelli’s heroics

  184. first time lawng time says:

    Still a 5 run deficit…
I hate Kay…I thought it was gone!

  185. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I seriously thought that was another slam

  186. BigTimeBartolo says:

Surprised yes, but still to cautious to regain any optimism of winning this game yet

  187. Pinstripes in Cali says:

WTF??? Cervelli with a 2RBI double??
And what’s that, flying by my window? Is that a pig?

  188. Mike Axisa says:

    Chip away boys, chip away.

  189. the tenth inning stretch says:

Finally, the actual Yankees have showed up.

  190. BigTimeBartolo says:

A sac fly from Jeter. Suddenly this game is bearable. But the bullpen absolutely needs to keep it at 4

  191. first time lawng time says:

    Imagine this game against Boston….
These comments would be a million times worse…

    Kinda funny actually.

  192. Mike Axisa says:

    Alright Amaury, hold them down.

  193. It'sATarp says:

back to back to back to back to back hrs for the yanks plz

  194. first time lawng time says:

    Pappelbon is a scrub!!!!!!!!!!!!

  195. Klingy says:

these yankees are a weird ass team this season lol

  196. Pinstripes in Cali says:

Replay of Cerv’s double finally came up on MLB Gameday. He really smacked the shit out of that thing, did he learn how to hit while his foot was broken??

  197. BigTimeBartolo says:

screw you and all your hits Butler

  198. V says:

You wanna see offensive ineptitude? Mariners at Orioles, Vargas vs. Britton, 0-0 dueling shutouts.

  199. Freddy's Mom says:

Thanks to nobody for not answering my question “who is Sanit?” Looked it up myself. You were all too busy forgetting you were only minutes ago hating on Cervelli while slobbering all over yourselves in gratitude that he just, again, saved our asses, or at least helped.

  200. BigTimeBartolo says:

Cervelli is awful. Partly Sanit’s fault there, but jesus

  201. first time lawng time says:

Franceour gives me the creeps. He just has this air to him.

  202. Erica says:

  203. Jerome S. says:

I really hope that Hosmer doesn’t become one of those players I hate.

  204. BigTimeBartolo says:

Hosmer, you’ve gotta be kidding me. Checked swing double and now the deficit gets larger again

  205. Pinstripes in Cali says:

    Hosmer = Yankee Killer

  206. Grandy says:

Watching Hosmer makes me wish for the Jesus.

  207. first time lawng time says:

I blame Flaherty for every loss from here on out.

  208. wow says:

    this is amazing.

  209. Klingy says:

hold on to the fucking ball cervelli! and shitnit, shitnat, sanit, watever ur name is, stop fucking up!

  210. BigTimeBartolo says:

That’s like Cervelli’s 100th mistake at the plate tonight. Just brutal

  211. Erica says:

Oh God Oh God. I’m getting food to talk to about this.

  212. cs says:

Who is left in the bp?

  213. Cy Pettitte says:

they got it down to a 4 run deficit, quick, better blow this open again

  214. first time lawng time says:

Michael Kay in a speedo?! EWWWWWWW!!!

Cano on the other hand…probably has a hairy back so nevermind.

  215. Klingy says:

holy shit, almost had ANOTHER heart attack, got out of it

  216. Avi says:

Francisco Cervelli: The no hit catcher that can’t catch (or throw).

  217. wow says:

i imagine the kc bullpen wont be great tonight? if we ever get to it?

  218. first time lawng time says:

Arod should get paid by the pop up.

  219. Cy Pettitte says:

    arod the auto out

  220. BigTimeBartolo says:

Arod with the productive infield pop up

  221. Grandy says:

    Enough with the pop ups!

  222. Kostas says:

ARod pops up…. if that was Jeter, this thread would be littered with spiteful comments towards Jeter.

    • V says:

      Cool story, bro.

    • first time lawng time says:

If Jeter popped up everyone would be happy thatir wasn’t a groundout lol

      • Kostas says:

I guess. There is always someone to hate on the Yankees, never thought Yankee fans were so shallow and ignorant they would attack Jeter. But as John Sterling says, “You can’t predict baseball”.

        • first time lawng time says:

Well Jeter has looked pretty bad since last year.
I think it’s mostly frustrating with him because he is usually so good, but now he doesn’t have much value offensively.

I don’t think saying bad thongs about your team makes you less of a fan. I think people are like this because they are the Yankees and they should be better than this and there is a lot of bad going on.

  223. Klingy says:

wasted inning, have 3 innings left

  224. wow says:

the balls will find holes eventually right?…right?

  225. BigTimeBartolo says:

    Granderson is awesome

  226. MikeD says:

    Nice catch, again, Grandy.

  227. first time lawng time says:

    Thread is lifeless.

  228. Rob Thomsen's Chili Farts says:

I blame inflation for the fact that $200 million only buys second place these days.

  229. Kostas says:

Sanit deserves an award for saving the bullpen.

  230. Stratman9652 says:

I wouldn’t be surprised is hosmer hit for the cycle tonight.

  231. Rob says:

That would be nice if arod could homer this upcoming at bat. Get some energy into the crowd, make things at least a bit interesting, and hopefully get him locked in for the boston series. he is outrageously due.

  232. Cy Pettitte says:

damn, they are riding Sanit hard, that is a shit ton of pitches out of the pen

  233. V says:

I think this d00d needs to be cheered for what he just did for the Yankees. He single-handedly saved the bullpen before the Boston series.

  234. V says:

Hahahahaha, 12th inning, the Mariners score the first run of the game. Closer comes in, walk, HBP, HBP, no outs…

  235. MikeD says:

Nice job saving the pen, whomever you are.

  236. Erica says:

    Oh boy.

  237. Cy Pettitte says:

lol great job Carlyle, you piece of shit

  238. jetrer says:

Can we get rid of Buddy yet?

  239. BigTimeBartolo says:

Buddy Carlyle is absolute garbage. DFA DFA DFA

  240. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    He ain’t my buddy, friend.

  241. MikeD says:

Hmmm, just arrived, but looks like it’s time to go see what’s going on over on the National Geographic Channel.

  242. first time lawng time says:

This team really has not been that good this year. I’m happy it’s only May though.

  243. Kostas says:

Clearly adding Buddy Carlyle was based on serious discussion and that famous Yankee evaluation. Otherwise you’d have to think it was a poor choice to fill a roster spot.

  244. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Damn I’m gonna need a shit-ton of beer for this weekend series.

  245. Clemson Rob says:

Buddy the Relief pitcher, what’s your favorite way to give up runs?

  246. Erica says:

An A-Rod home run that… well, I mean, good for A-Rod?

    • V says:

Well, it’s a good sign that he’s busting out of his slump. If he can get right tonight, that’ll be very helpful going into the Red Sox series.

  247. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  248. the tenth inning stretch says:

    Yay A-Rod. Whoopee.

  249. Cy Pettitte says:

    fucking stat padding ARod

  250. Rob says:

do i get bonus points for calling that?

  251. BigTimeBartolo says:

Finally, hopefully this is a sign of things to come in the BoSox series

  252. first time lawng time says:

That was the most useless and pathetic HR I have ever seen.

  253. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Stat padder.

  254. CMP says:

Why the hell didn’t they keep Albaladejo?

He was a heck of a lot better than this Carlyle and Ayala crap that they’ve been running out there.

  255. BigTimeBartolo says:

The fact that our whole bullpen is depleted like this in the first place means Girardi has managed it badly. Especially with his stupid inning roles and raping D-rob’s arm

  256. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

At least Mo, Joba, DRob, and all the good pitchers in the BP will have a night off before the Boston series

  257. Cy Pettitte says:

remember when people wanted to get rid of Brett? lol, good times.

    • Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

I don’t know that I even feel particularly bad about this loss, sometimes your butt gets handed to you. But the compounded feeling of the last couple of weeks has me a bit shaken and pessimistic, and just in a general bad place when I’m watching the Yanks right now. Zen baseball it is not.

  258. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Kay starting the Cervelli gets big hits narrative.

  259. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Let’s get to this Post-Game, I need Girardi to tell me about all the positive signs from this game so that my rage can boil over before I go to bed…

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

      “I thought Buddy threw well…”

“They were seeing the ball well, they just couldn’t execute”

“Cervi’s been great for us all year…”

  260. CMP says:

Fitting way to end the game Captain 4-3ter
