Game 47: Ace vs. Ace
ByThis is the kind of game that makes baseball fun. We’ve got two of the game’s top pitchers facing off in CC Sabathia and Ricky Romero. The two lefties are near equal in terms of ERA (CC: 3.08, Romero: 3.10), but the Yankees’ ace has a big edge in FIP (2.80 vs. 3.59) thanks to his homerun rate (0.40 HR/9 vs. 1.09), and on average he faces about three more batters per start. That’s big when it comes to keeping the ball out of the hands of crummy middle relievers. Romero has already flustered New York once this season (six innings, two runs last month), but the Blue Jays have only seen Sabathia twice in the last two years (8 IP, 2 R in 2009 then 8.1 IP, 1 R in 2010) and never at Yankee Stadium. Weird, huh? Anyway, here’s tonight’s lineup…
Derek Jeter, DH
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Russell Martin, C
Nick Swisher, RF
Brett Gardner, LF
Eduardo Nunez, SS
CC Sabathia, SP
The game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on My9 locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.
Shameless Plug: Need to rant after the game? Listen, or better yet, call into Take On Russ at myfoxny.com (201-330-3466) after the final out is recorded. Salzberg’s a friend of Ben’s family, so we’re just helping spread the word.

The offense has to pick up CC in this one. Game after game the starter gives up 3 ER or less and the offense can’t match it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
Moe= Rafael Soriano and his contract (sfw)
Over Under:
1 throwing error by Nunez
3 ER for CC
1.5 home runs for Jose Bautista
3.5 runs scored by this offense
Over
Same
Under (1)
Over (5)
I wish I was capable of bleeding cash.
I’m so sick of hearing about Soriano, I wish they could just stash him in AA with Igawa and forget about him
I’m sure he’d clear waivers.
The sad thing is I can’t tell if you are serious or not.
He would most definitely pass through. Nobody is going to pick up that contract much less when he’s hurt
So I added a second monitor to my setup tonight. My life will never be the same.
How could you ever live with just one?
ha, you are not kidding. The extra tv set ups change the entire game.
I only have one monitor but its a fucking Macbook. That means I’m still cool, right?
Waaaaaaaaaaaa why didn’t they walk him.
On the contrary, they should have let him jack one and get it out of his system with no one on base.
CC does not surrender to anybody.
Kay was right on that one. Called the change up away on that pitch.
Why does Jeter DH constantly? I can understand why you want him hitting against the lefty but why not give him full days off and get a real bad in there against righties?
Because Jeter might throw a fit Posada style if they start giving him random days off when he does not want them. He gets chippy when he gets days for injuries or just routine ones.
Girardi couldn’t handle Jeter on the bench for a whole game
I’m looking forward to a quick moving pitchers duel tonight.
Terrific at-bat for the centaur
IBB Rivera, plz.
that’s a long ass single
Nice play by Gardner! Nothing to do with his speed either.
I thought it was a homer and it was a single. You just can’t predict baseball
Juan Rivera feels like he played for the Yanks a lifetime ago.
Slowest double play ever?
That was the world’s slowest double play.
That double play was too easy.
some Posada-esque running there
Defense!
That was Gardner’s speed (and good jump)
I feel safe with Gardner in left field.
Advance metric that half inning for the Yanks D there, ha.
and Gardner in particular.
woah not cool
What the hell was that? On purpose or a slip?\
Either way, you never want a ball coming at your head area
I’d say Jose Bautista will be getting a nice fastball in his back next time up.
He. Was. Not. Throwing. At. Cano.
CC made it clear in Baltimore- You do not throw at one of my teammate’s heads and you do not throw at Robbie Cano.
Yea. At the very least it gives us an excuse to move him far off the plate.
Good bye, best catcher in baseball right now.
woah Russell, that’s a fucking bomb
Ohhh noes, another evil homer
Too many homers
Love that reaction.
Coltrane with the Muscle…
Coltrane.
Martin with more Monterian power than…
Montero
It must have hurt you to say that.
Golson can throw a ball further.
shit this year brett gardner has more power than montero
anyone else a fan of the blonde in the 2nd row?
She isn’t even watching the game.
She probably thinks the game is watching her.
absolutely guarantee cano has noticed her
she knows it too
Sign Russell for a few more years, put Montero in RF
Play him at short. Similar defense to what we’re getting now but a better bat.
yes it’s a joke.
Nunez should just flip the call Cano every time.
He didn’t look all that smooth, but he still made the play
Old Yankee Stadium starting to look not halfway bad.
We are due for a Kabak Old Yankee Stadium development update come to think of it.
Better late than never…
Kay has never seen the facilities at a private HS, eh?
I know he went to public school (Bx. Science, was my grad speaker there when I graduated) and I can tell you, the public parks in the outer boroughs, and especially baseball fields are absolutely horrible within 5-10 years of being built.
Seems like a lot of it is that artificial turf though. I’m no expert, but it seems like that has a better chance of holding up than the older, all natural grass parks.
I’ve been saying that for years. They just rebuilt a park near my house in Queens, and they made the soccer field FieldTurf but the two baseball fields natural grass. I don’t understand.
Yea. Good point. The baseball field looked like natural grass and everything else field turf. I don’t know why either. Secret government conspiracy to keep inner city kids from playing baseball? hah
Cano is killing me
That wasn’t on him.
That took a shitty hop.
It’s a tough play but I expect a major league second baseman to make it
Agreed. Tough play but he fucked it up.
It’s a play that could have been made, but it took a bad hop and I’m not mad.
I don’t think it took a bad hope. The ball just went right off his glove. But agreed not something to even think twice about. It happens.
LOL Corey Patterson
That is unacceptable by CC. Corey Patterson beats us again.
It’s mentally disturbing when CC can’t get Corey Patterson out.
I’ll trade two Corey Patterson hits for every Jose Bautista strikeout.
It’s mentally pleasing when CC can get Jose Bautista out.
lol Bautista
that guy sucks
He must’ve forgotten his dose of steroids today.
haha … He had to cool after taking all that heat over here after the first inning homer.
Damn CC, don’t be so MEAN!!!
Solution- Start IBBing Patterson to get to Bautista.
ZZ>> Bautista (so far)
Off topic:
For any Bob Dylan fans out there…
http://www.npr.org/2011/05/24/.....n-turns-70
Romero is underrated, but the kid is actually pretty solid.
I think most AL East fans know how good he is. Maybe not quite the nation yet.
that was some nice hitting
Tex just laid off a 2-1 change-up, the world truly will end soon
hahaa … I can’t stop laughing at that guy with the blond in the second row, constantly trying to watch the game out of the corner of his eye while that girl is talking his ear off, playing with her phone and stuff.
im not proud to say that ive been following that dynamic between pitches… and yes, its been hilarious
nice hitting by Alex who looked lost at the plate
damn lucky play there..
Juan fucking Rivera
The Perfect Davids are two of them…
Jimmy Key the 3rd.
Unacceptable. These guys are nobodies. And someone get a hit with RISP already.
You find a lot of things unacceptable. Must be tough to live life like that. Are you that hard on your kids?
http://a3.l3-images.myspacecdn.....2d18/l.jpg
Awesome.
Damn Swish actually looked fast on that play.
So…the Yankees are getting baserunners. Some of them are bound to score, right?
I mean, Toronto is having no trouble scoring tonight with their little bullshit hacks.
I hate the Blue Jays. They never roll over for you.
Let’s change the hats to Red Sox logos and then they’ll roll over.
A lot of fly balls to the opposite field.
CC has been staying away most of the night.
A little odd. Would be curious to see what was talked about there.
Is it just me or are these the pussiest fucking hits in the world from the Blue Jays. Good grief.
Their shitty little swings and they are ridiculously lucky,
Fucking bloopered to death. No legit hits this entire inning.
Little dbags.
This is all about the pitch selection.
He is throwing the majority of his pitches as changeups and sinkers on the outer half with runners on base. Every hitter is leaning out over the plate and just looping it the other way.
You have to throw legitimately inside, and not just for show, to get them off of those pitches.
They are not making good contact though. Sometimes the ball just drops in. I wouldn’t second guess the entire strategy when that happens.
A bunch of those were line drives. Normally those would be good pitches, but not when hitters are leaning out over the plate and driving them to the outfield repeatedly.
He became predictable in that inning, and that’s why he gave up those hits and runs. If you throw a few pitches legitimately inside in the at bats, then the hitters can’t take that approach and might hit those same pitches on the ground for double play balls.
In hindsight, I agree. Clearly, I would have thrown different pitches. But, CC was hitting his spots on the outside corner and the weak contact should have resulted in outs. It didn’t.
But you I see your point as well. CC was definitely being predictable.
Am I watching replays?
Wow, death by shitty fucking hits. Bloop after bloop.
These are just bs dinks and dunks.
And this is just a merry go round. CC can’t get anyone out except Bautista. We needed him to have a good night.
that’s game.
Cano again messing up that play. I remember him doing the exact same thing earlier in the year.
Robinson really needs to get his head out of his ass. That’s terrible.
I swear he has been downhill since that head injury.
His defensive lapses have been going on all year.
cant catch a break against the jays… amazing
and now we get the pathetic D
What the fuck Robbie?
Funda. fucking. mentals.
Early practice tomorrow, 3 hours of fielding drills for the fucking infield.
Small ball wins games. This team definitely isn’t right.
Ugh, time to go do something else
Cano: 2008.
Not a vintage year.
They’re dinkers and dunkers but at least they’re getting hits with RISP!
Okay. Again, why are the Jays only a game over .500?
Because they don’t play the Yankees everyday?
Because they don’t play the Yankees 162 times a year.
We’re their Minnesota Twins.
Okay, it’s not that bad, but they play tougher against us than they do, say, the Red Sox.
Robbie really needs to sit a game out. He’s just not paying giving it 100%.
Blooped to death.
It makes you wonder if these Yankees can string 3 wins in a row. They’ve become good at beating themselves. No grit – no fire.
following the yanks right now = frustrated incorporated (making misery).
CC lost it now.. this might be the game right here
Stop brushing this off as bad luck. This is stupid baseball.
Every right handed hitter in the Jays lineup this inning has been leaning out over the plate and shooting the ball the other way. So maybe you need to throw 2 or 3 fastballs inside to make them think about it. Is that what Martin called for? No, he called for more changeups and sinkers down and away, right where the hitters are looking for it.
And on top of it, Cano cost them a run with his sloppy play up the middle to extend the 3rd inning, and totally botched an out on the safety squeeze that they are lucky has not cost them another run so far.
Every time a hitter gets to a count like 2-0 or 3-1, they are swinging out of their shoes looking for fastballs that nobody with a brain would ever throw them, especially when you have a changeup like Romero has.
If you play stupid baseball, you get bad results. Why is anyone shocked? You can’t always cry about bad luck, you have to stop giving it away as well.
I agree. The Jays are getting hits with RISP, we aren’t. This has been a problem all year. People said it was fixed when we got 13 on Baltimore but then we got shut down by RA Dickey so it definitely ain’t fixed.
Let’s walk Corey Patterson to load the bases for Bautista. Brilliant.
Hey, it worked
Okay, in CC’s defense, he made his pitches.
That inning was just bad luck. I swear, other than the leadoff double, every other hit was BS.
It’s true, they just happened to hit three straight bloopers
The baseball gods are paying us back for what we did to the Mets
that was fucking embarrassing, some of these games are borderline unwatchable
Let’s hope we can push a few runs across against Romero.
Eventually
Down by 3. 2-0 count. Why not take a pitch?
This team has only one consistency, underachieving. Amazing that they are still this bad at the plate and cannot seem to beat teams with lesser talent.
So yeah, this team has really sucked at home so far.
Blue Jays have been a major pain in the ass.
It hasn’t just been the Jays. We only split with the White Sox, lost to the Royals, got swept by Boston, needed a miracle comeback to take the series against the Mets. When we go out west and face the good pitching in Seattle and Oakland I don’t know if we’ll win a single game.
Unfortunately it is not the Blue Jays. It is all on the Yankees. While it would be over exaggerating, this team is borderline “mailing it in” each game.
ARod is leading the team in BA and Brett Gardner has a higher average than Cano. Not enough kind words to express the complete failure of this team to this point.
If not for bad starts by Tampa and Boston, Yanks would be 5 games out.
The comment about the Blue Jays was supposed to have no relation to the first part of my comment. I was just too lazy to make 2 comments.
I think its time to sit down Cano for a couple of games until he can get his shit together.
He’s not hitting, he’s chasing pitches out of the zone continuously and what’s worst is he’s been sloppy as hell in the field. Girardi needs to give him a wake up call and light a fire under his ass.
Cano has played damn near every game. He needs a day off regardless.
Re acquire Melky to light a fire under his ass?
… then of course release Melky again when needed to light a fire under Cano’s ass.
Rinse. Repeat.
This is Girardi’s shortcoming, he can’t fire up his players. And while your sitting Cano, might as well add Swisher or anyone not named Granderson.
A slump you can deal with but he looks like he’s sleepwalking out in the field and his plate discipline has taken a big step backwards with his hacking at everything.
I think Girardi needs to send him a message by sitting him for a couple of games.
Not that it means anything but how many other teams don’t have a .300+ hitter so far this season, im too lazy to check.
I really have a problem with my team losing to a team from Canada.
There are 22 other countries in North America. The U.S. shouldn’t even play with another country. By including only one other country, then your excluding other countries. It’s unfair.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is on the expansion list.
countries.
The Yankees “failure” regarding RISP is being driven by less opportunities to drive runners in. Jeter, Posada, Swisher and Cano are all getting on base at a substantially lower rate than previous seasons. The team is known for it’s circular line-up, getting men on base and passing the bat to the next guy. They’re not getting on base.
I agree. And instead of having our high OBP men at the top of the lineup we have to cater to an aging star who should be hitting 9th. Instead of sitting Posada and getting a better hitter we have to cater to an aging star. Bernie was ostracized, why couldn’t they do the same to these two?
I hate official scorers, lol. CC on my fantasy team, had 4 ER, then 3, now 4 again.
Are Official Scorers banned from playing fantasy baseball?
I ask this jokingly, yet…
this is looking like an 8 IP, 2 ER game for Romero.. this offense is dead
I feel like it’s gonna take a bang to their heads to get them to snap out of this.
everyone keeps waiting for this team to throw a switch. including myself. But the Yankees look bad. cant hit worth a shit and errors all over the place.
just mad unlucky. Unlucky as the Indians are lucky.
Down by 3 runs, can’t score often, make the pitcher work – 3 pitches total.
I’m starting to think tar this team is just slightly above average. 25-21 isn’t a good average and 7 out of the last 9 games, we have been trailing after the 6th inning. Maybe the team needs to treated like an average team until we see proven results (i.e. 3+ game winning streak, 12+ hits in a game).
25-21 isn’t a good average
It’s the second best record in the AL.
Sorry, I meant record. And, yes, Mike…we disagree here. When you also take into account the teams who are climbing up (Red Sox, namely), the Yankees are blessed to be where they’re at. And, quite frankly, it probably won’t be 2nd best in the AL after tonight.
What happened to CC?
Blooped to death in the … third? I forget the inning.
Don’t forget the fine defense from Cano
what the fuck was Curtis thinking?
Bad, Grandy Man.
Do not get picked off.
You need men on base down by 3 and he gets picked off trying to move up one bag with 2 outs. That’s just bad baseball and bad managing.
I’m sure he was going on his own, has nothing to do with managing. Also, its early enough in the game that being aggressive there isn’t such a bad thing. The offense is doing nothing. May as well try to make something happen.
Agreed. That was a straight steal. A hit-and-run is called by the manager. That was Grandy on his own. Yet, I really can’t pick on him. He’s a smart player, yet all mistakes are magnified right now.
If there’s a close play, Girardi should go crazy and get himself thrown out to try and wake these guys up.
The team specialty …………. stranding runners. Don’t just do something Girardi, stand there. Don’t offend players – just make excuses for them.
Haven’t heard that before
so Romero walks Tex on 5 pitches, and ARod comes up and hits the first pitch into the ground for a GIDP
fucking nice.
atta boy Alex, first pitch swinging!
Another A-Rod double play. Shocking.
Phew! This team is just awful right now… strike that, I mean for the past three weeks.
Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?
Yes, however, the light at the end of the tunnel is from an oncoming train.
David Ortiz is batting .300 and the Yankees don’t sport a single player that can boast the same or better. Am I the only person that’s extremely perturbed by such a fact?
Who cares about David Ortiz? They also have four regulars hitting under .240.
I care about David Ortiz. Me. Mojo. He represents yet another example as to why the Yankees royally suck right now. The way I see it is, if Ortiz can hit then why the hell can’t Jeter, Posada, or the rest of this godforsaken lineup. I care. That’s why I asked if anyone else did.
The Yankees have scored more runs per game than any other team (including the Red Sox). So why do you care about individual averages? Would you rather have Ortiz and the Red Sox’s 211 runs this season or the Yankees’ 238 runs?
Don’t make him answer that.
The Yankees have played one fewer game too.
You’re like a pre-2004 Red Sox fan, obsessing over the rival. I wonder if people in Tampa are asking why Evan Longoria is hitting .225 if David Ortiz is hitting .300.
I’m sure there are. The Yankees don’t have a monopoly on illogical fans.
Does Tampa Bay have fans??
Yeah, and they don’t whine nearly as much as Yankees fans.
Haha. I almost forgot how much fun it was to rile you fanatics up.
The troll admits its a troll.
Everyone: Mojo is a troll.
Ortiz’s pursuit of the real killers has re-energized his baseball career. Searching for the truth can do that for a man.
Geez, take some effing pitches, guys.
He’s not exactly throwing all strikes. Shitty at bats,
Did Kay really just say if the offense doesn’t score a lot of runs they’re not going to score many runs?
god michael kay butchered that bautista stat
CC could potentially get a loss when he held Bautista to 0-4, that’s fucked up
Amazingly, Bautista’s gone 0 for 4 only 3 times this season. That’s insane. The Jays lost 2 of those 3.
Got a feeling that CC is pitching a full 9 tonight.
Girardi will never allow that to happen
CC would sit on him
Swisher is so lost, make a move Cash.
Those days off seem to have done Swish a lot of good.
Haha was that a USA! USA! chant? FTLT approves.
Uh oh. another RISP fail upcoming
come on Jeter
How confident are you guys that Cash gets a Swish replacement and a top-tier starter through trade by the deadline?
Not much. That’s why the Yankees have ti concentrate more on getting top prospects in their system.
Yankees aren’t finding a replacement for a guy who just turned 30 and OPS’d .870 the last 2 years.
I think you’re gonna be disappointed when I say, the Yankees won’t be getting a top-tier starter, but will probably pick up a number 2 or 3 rotation guy.
It’s time to give up on Swish! Two really good seasons and this month and 3/4 outweighs them for sure.
2 on a scale from 1-10. Where is the top tier starter coming from?
GIDP warning!
$500 says Double Play
+1
Happy I didn’t bet against you.
when they get something going, Jeter is there to screw things up
If Jeter can stay out of the DP, Grandy can tie it with a 3 run bomb
Please make only one out, Derek.
Only way to be sure is to just not swing
Apparently thats asking too much
Asking too much Mike
Perhaps if we can hypnotize Derek into believing every pitcher is wearing a NY Mets uniform, he might hit .300 again.
Nice at bat from Jetes.
Haha. Four more years of this shit.
Can’t wait. We’re gonna have so much fun!!!
I want my $500!!!
And I want Jeter to hit ninth. But neither of us is going to get what we want.
Yup yup, I was far more confident that would happen then any other possible outcome of that at bat.
FUCKING KNEW IT
way to take the bat out of Grandy’s hand, shithead. next time just strike out.
Unfuckingbelievable. Could that be any more predictable.
predictable
Captain Clutch comes through again.
So fucking sick of this.
you know its bad when just about everyone was expecting him to GIDP
That is what $17m gets you these days.
Our True Yankee Lead off hitter…sigh please retire
Will Girardi drop Jeter when he gets to 3000? I’ve resigned myself to him being at the top until then, but good lord, this can’t continue.
Maybe he’ll drop him when the OBP drops below .300… Should be any time now…
Nope. don’t you know who Joe Girardi is?
I forgot what RISP hits looked like
CC for the CGL
The one time Girardi should have bunted and he didn’t.
/half kidding
Could the DH bat for the SS instead of the pitcher? CC could do a better job than Jeter, at least for power.
Please make Gardner the lead off hitter again Girardi
Why? He can’t hit consistently either.
Right now he’s a much better option that Jeter
Are you insane? Gardner’s been on fire for a month!
Since April 25 when he was hitting .136/.190/.254, Gardner’s hit 382/.455/.553 in 91 PA and raised his line to (going into tonight) .274/.344/.422.
It’s not going to make much of a difference. If he’s still in the lineup and not hitting, he will still come up with runners on base.
89 pitches. I can’t think of any reason to go to the pen, which means they probably will.
Can we have back the third inning?
I don’t know whether to laugh, cry or smash my garden furniture up.
We have to rebuild. This period of Yankee dominance is over. 2009 was the last hurrah with this core. We have to focus on building up our system so that we can churn out some good young players. Montero and Banuelos might be the beginning of that, but we need to concentrate on our system.
I’m saving this one for future replay.
The Yankees have been building the farm and are still at the top of the division. Why in the world should they give up RIGHT now, when they have Cano, Granderson, CC, Teix all in their primes and among the best at their positions? Add in a valuable and cheap Gardner, Russell Martin, Nick Swisher (should he decide to rebound), and great bullpen, and Alex Rodriguez still among the best 3rd basemen in the league.
That’s why I’m saving it. It highlights the irrational comments fans post every year when the Yankees slump and the fans are frustrated.
I have been of this opinion for the last few years. I look at what the Rays, Red Sox, and Giants have done, raising their own players and starting pitchers, and I say “Where are our yound superstars” The closest thing we have is Cano, which I do give them. But I’m concentrating more on our starting pitchers. I have said this before. Since Andy Pettite, we have not been able to develop our own starting pitching/aces.
The last few years? Including winning the WS in 2009 and making it to the ALCS last year? The Red Sox, if you remember, didn’t make the playoffs last year and take advantage of their massive payroll, just as the Yankees do.
Anyway, the Yankees’ farm system was ranked 5th(!!!!) in baseball this past offseason. What else do you want?
The last two years, we needed to get younger. The Red Sox didn’t make the playoffs because of they became a MASH unit.
The Yankees did get younger when they dumped Abreu, Damon, Matsui, etc. and added Swisher, Martin, Granderson.
Really amazing how this offense constantly forgets to hit with RISP except for a blowout or one big inning.
that hit would have been nice with someone on base
le sigh.
I know the fallacy of the predetermined outcome and all, but, shiiiiit.
I even miss 2010 Jeter.
You don’t mean that…
Sure he does. Jeter 2010 had an OBP 40 points higher than the 2011 version so far.
why is it so hard to get a motherfucking hit with a goddamn runner in scoring position?
“I thought CC pitched very well, 1 bad inning and that was the difference in the game.”
“We had some opportunities and we couldn’t capitalize, with a guy like Romero, you know, he’s a very good pitcher and he knows how to work himself out of trouble.”
“I mean this is baseball. We had some good swings I thought tonight, and we just didn’t get the big hit. You go through stretches like this sometimes, but it’s gonna work itself out.”
Saved you all from having to tune in to Girardi’s post game.
On Jeter: [Girardi looks away. Whistles.]
Uh-oh, kids! “Self-fulfilling prophecy” discussion alert!!
christ.
just put the ball in play
LOL @ Jeter doing a commercial talking about being the best.
He is the best at GIDP’ing
JETER SUCKZZ! SIGN NICK AHMED!
Is there some kind of goddamn statistical explanation as to why this team sucks with RISP?
Yes, because it’s not 2009 anymore.
Paulie shout out to Words With Friends app!
Damn it Jeter! Stop making ARod fail with RISP! Stop it now!
thank god, a hit with RISP
2 in a row with RISP? IMPOSSIBLE
Hey look, a RISP hit.
Robi and Russ, the only Yanks that can hit with men on?
It’s too bad Jeter didn’t make just one out.
Jeter, ya know he’s got an Edge!
One isn’t enough. To be the best, you have to go for two.
Fallacy of the predetermined Michael Kay rant.
I guess you missed an inning
Yeah, Robbie doesn’t need to sit.
Man, step away for a few minutes and nothing changes. Can we just play Baltimore all the time. They seem to be the only shitty team we can beat.
Did that just happen? or am i imagining things again
Russell Martin for President and ALL the awards.
cant believe my eyes
now would be a nice time for Swish’s monthly hit.
fucking hell, he’s almost under .200
They got one this inning! Probably that’s all they’ll get too but any homer ties it up.
Watch Swish hit a bomb. Haha
Considering Dwayne Murphy’s success with Bautista, will he start getting managing opportunities? John Farrell is managing the Blue Jays because of his perceived success as a pitching coach with the Red Sox and Indians.
Farrell’s white.
Where were those earlier in the game?
Not even surprised.
Why’s it always Swish up in big spots?
Our lineup is genius like that, any kind of rally will either stumble on Jeter or Swisher.
Wouldn’t have minded some Andruw Jones pinch hitting right there.
good job Swisher, way to keep the line moving..
Montero to right field!
/half joking
Even I say no to this. Montero is a catcher/DH. After much practice he could be a decent 1B-something like Miggy defensively.
so in other words, terrible at any position
The Swish is losing his swagger. At some point, this has to reverse. Or does it?
Joanna Garcia stole it. That shrew!!!
He hit 219/332/410 in 2008 (92 OPS+). So…yeah it could get this bad.
Has Mo pitched this month? (Not that I would bring him in for the 9th; I’d still have CC.)
Well lets have a walk off to cover over the cracks, please.
Gardy, Nunie get on, Jeter grounds into a triple play
if there’s a man on first I want to see posada pinch hit
Cashman needs to call up jeff wilpon and trade beltan for a bag of balls
only if they take cervelli too
Bottom of the 9th:
Gardner gets on
Nunez gets on
Jeter GITP
that’s original
Can anyone remember a Yankee regular under 35 with a bigger year to year drop off than Swisher?
Robinson Cano. (Its May!)
(Just for numbers sake, Cano through the end of May in 2008: .219/.269/.328)
Thurman Munson.
/sowrong
I just don’t think swisher’s that good of a hitter, he just loads up his stats against the orioles
Not sure if serious.
It really is hard to come up with one. I know it’s late May, but still…this is a pretty big fall.
Not in the post-steroids era but it definitely happened fairly frequently in the pre-1990′s. See Tom Tresh 1966 vs. 1965.
Does my Cano reference not count?
epic tease
If the yankees manage to tie it up. CC should come out for the 10th. He’s been great tonight aside from a few well placed bloopers
anyone else amazed that blonde chick is STILL talking?
LOL
Do the Yankees have a rally in their bones?
not with Jeter due up this inning
They have a rally killer in their bones.
HELLZZ YESSS!
Remember when Kay used to talk about Jeter possibly reaching 4,000 hits?
Remember when Kay used to talk about Alex possibly breaking the HR record?
He’ll do it by July. You watch.
i really miss pie.
walkoff meringue?
shitty game loss pint of ice cream is more likely
Walk off merengue…. dog
wow the yankees could almost go from 1st to 4th tonight
RHP with heat. If your trying to win you PH for Jeter with a guy who can turn on an FB, if your trying to respect the captain you don’t.
PH for Jeter, not Nunez…
Posada should hit for Jeter
Good shit Posada.
Hip Hip!
Yes!
Two chances to tie the game with a single!
I would have literally ran from Boston to the Bronx and stabbed Posada if he’d gotten hosed.
alright posada!
Hip hip!
pinch hitting? Seriously, if there are better hitters on the bench… awwww forget it.
Jorge with the wheels
I don’t believe what I just saw
Posada should pinch hit for Nunez and get a double.
roids don’t always help in the field
Hip Hip Jorge sitting dead red and thank you Bautista with the choke on D.
alright no GIDP for jeter
Can’t GIDP here.
at least Jeter cant GIDP here
Jeter, again.
Odds of a 4-3-5 or 6-3-5 are zero, right guys?
Jorge is so clutch.
Upside, Jeter can’t GIDP… positive.
Jeter will single here.
Understatement of the year: This would be a real feel-good game to win.
AT LEAST GRANDERSON WILL BAT!!!!!!!!!
Predictable…
He should have kept going ahhhhhhhh.
Crap, I thought Dickerson had a chance…
Beltran for Swisher straight up?
Not enough dollar savings for the Mets.
If the mets offered should Cash say yes?
Jesus Christ no. Where does this stuff come from?
The constant need to improve.
Jeter is absolutely fucking useless.
Ooooooh. Would he have made it? We shall never know.
HAYS!!!
I guess not causing two outs is clutch
Jeter still useless… please retire soon
please throw a wild pitch
Come on Grandy.
They’re afraid of Granderson with good cause.
Jeter with another no risp hit, 15 commercial game.
Now it’s up to the Grandyman.
They’re afraid of Granderson with good cause.
And that strike call was TOTAL bullshit.
i really don’t want to get my hopes up here.
ridiculous called strike
GRANDERSON!!!!!!
Thank MO for Granderson.
Grandy!!!
Grandyyyy
Curtis fucking Granderson!!!!
Fuck yeah!!!!!!
GRANDERSON!!!!!!!!
GRANDYYYY
I clapped once, really hard. I’m such a douche.
THE GRANDYMAN!!!
Grandy. It’s you. It’s always been you.
Team MVP.
SON OF A BITCH, YES!!!!!!!
CC for the 10th?
So, should Granderson have bunted?
CC for the CG win.
Thank God for Curtis!!!!!!
A CLUTCH HIT FOR ONCE.
Granderson!!
Yeah, it’s definitely worth it to leave a game with 2 outs in the ninth.
Give Granderson a statue in monument park
Dear Derek
I have fully supported you your entire career. Presently, you are making it near impossible to argue for you to remain in pinstripes. I sincerely hope that this is just an early season hiccup, otherwise, please use the next month to pull your fucking head out of your ass and start being as productive on the field as you are on commercials. It is fucking annoying to see your GIDP/Stirkeout/WE at bats.
Thank you.
Comeon TEX!
He just…. does it all.
THE GRANDYMAN CAN!
damn, he could have done the Damon
Those people in the great hall can go fuck themselves…get back in your god dam seats.
All those losers in the Great Hall should be blocked from re-entering the Stadium.
GREATEST. YANKEE. EVER.
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS
YES!!!!!
YES!!!! PIE!!!
AMAZING!
CGRAND FOR MVP !!!!!!
RISP HITS?!?!?
YANKEES WIN!
PIE TIME!!!
Finally! That’s been a long fucking time coming!
3.14
HAHAHA!!!!! CC with the CG win!
THA-AAA-AAA-AAA-AAA-AAA-AAA!!! YANKEES!!!!! WIN!!!!!!!
/STERLING’D!
The triple A Yankees win?
Well-Dickerson did score too. But oh if he gets thrown out at 3rd.
It looked like he had it by a ton but … yeah … in an alternate universe, we’re all ripshit right now and Dickerson’s “do you remember _______” moment would have been written.
All the complainers and whiners are gonna be upset after this game.
And all you losers here who assumed a loss should be blocked from re-entering RAB!
Nice win.
The game threads (at this point) would be empty.
I still believe what I believe. But when I heard Francisco was their closer, I had a sneaky feeling.
Get that man some fucking pie.
America, Fuck Yeah!
Thanks god juan rivera is a shitty first baseman!!!!! Two times!
+ 1000000000000000000000
Teix! amazing game
THEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!!!!!!!!!
our 2 best hitters make shit happen!!
We shall take it! Thanks.
I know wins don’t really mean much in the grand scheme of things for pitchers, but CC earned every bit of it.
Posada looking like Jimmy V out there!
anyone in the great hall who claims tomorrow to have been there is a liar and should have their yankee fandom revoked.
proved me wrong. well played sirs, well played.
I just creamed my pants.
And this is why I’ve always been a big believer in never giving up. CC kept us in it and the bats became clutch at the end. What a win.
wow! two come from behind wins in the last 4 games. a harbinger of things to come?
Good game, ya’ll.
From frustration to jubilating walkoff. What a comeback, man.
2009-esque dude
Possibly the best part of this win is CC getting a CG win!
damn straight…needed to win this for the big man! he only had 103 pitches…very good performance…one crap inning.
I’m certainly glad we got a hit with a runner in scoring position to win the game but I’m especially happy that this walk-off can hopefully give this team an energy boost and put some more life in them going forward. Great win!
games like this make me always remember how amazing baseball can be…and people who say baseball is boring is obviously very stupid.
I’m as big a baseball fan as anyone and I’ll be the first to admit that it can be as boring as watching old people screw sometimes…but unlike the old farts messing around, it can turn on a dime…AND WHAMMO!…you better be paying attention!
Is “boring” really the first word that comes to mind when describing the act of watching “old people screw”?
its just a figure of speech…i’m a cunning linquist!
For my Dad’s 61st BDay, he gets a Directv subscription with MLB extra innings (we live in the South) and pie. Awesome.
I’m so sorry.
One of the best wins this year so far.
Granderson has to start in the All-Star Game this year.
Glorious!
Could be a walkoff in Tampa too.
EXCITING!!! Honestly, this is why I love baseball… those inspiring come-from-behind wins. Gah, it gets me all choked up. Go Yankees.
YCPB. Imagine if Dickerson-who had to be running on his own-gets thrown out at 3rd. Even he knew Derek needed help. Thank God he knew enough to not try to score-would have been out by a mile.
Grandy getting his hit on a slow curve from Francisco-awesome plate discipline to stay back.
Dammit!!!!!!!!
I heard Gardy, Nuñez, and Jeter were due in the top if the 9th. I saw Gardy was down 0-2 so I’m like fuck this and turned it off.
I missed it!!
Whatevs I prefer missing a win than missing a loss.
It ain’t over till it’s over
Not surprised.
Nice win despite Jeter and Swisher’s best efforts.
Debbie Downer
He’s right though. Swisher can’t hit his own weight and Jeter just continues to weigh us down at lead off. Why Gardner and Jeter haven’t been flipped is beyond me. Guys like Grandy, Teix, A-Rod, and Cano would be much more effective with Gardner getting on base ahead of them.
“Wow, that was a really good meal. I’m glad we all went out together.”
“Yeah, but I’ll probably get diarrhea again tonight. It always happens to me.”
I agree, but he’s still being a debbie downer
Facts are facts.
I agree, but still.
See: Mister Delaware’s statement above.
Ha. One of my coworkers just came back to the office. he’d been at the game with clients and had left in the 8th. I was all YOU MISSED WALKOFF PIE and he was upset. Serves him right for leaving.
You reap what you sow.
Where’s Rebuild Greg?
back in his mom’s basement playing with his star wars toys
He’ll be back whenever the Yankees are trailing.
Papelbon gives up a jack. Night gets a little better.
that’s really a shame…he seems like such a nice guy.
Sox win, but Rays blow the lead in bot. 8th =)
Now if everybody here who spent half the game calling for various players to be benched, traded, sold, fired, maimed, mutilated or killed can JUST DISAPPEAR tomorrow … go watch some team you can actually like …
…nah…
too much to hope for.
It’s almost like assuming a 4-1 game is over in the 6th inning is shortsighted.
it ain’t over. till it’s over.
“Mutilated”?…..
Too far. Too far.
Best win of the year.
Anyone see that Dirks fellow in Detroit with that catch? I thought it was a nice catch…
