Game 50: The King
BySo, Felix Hernandez. He’s pretty good at this pitching thing, winning the Cy Young Award last year thanks to a 8.36 K/9, 2.68 BB/9, and 3.04 FIP. King Felix has actually been even better this season, posting some gaudy peripherals in his 11 starts: 8.92 K/9, 2.43 BB/9, and 2.31 FIP. He also has a history of crushing the Yankees, in case you were thinking upset. Here’s the starting nine…
Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Russell Martin, C
Jorge Posada, DH
Nick Swisher, RF
Brett Gardner, LF
Ivan Nova, SP
Tonight’s game can be seen on YES locally or MLB Network nationally. If you’re home and still wake, try to enjoy.
Schedule Update: The Yankees and Twins will make up their April 6th rain out on Monday, September 19th at 1:05pm ET. That’s not terrible for New York, who will be coming back from Toronto that Sunday night and waiting for the Rays to come to town that Tuesday. Sucks they lose an off day that late in the year, though.

Ivan Nova vs Felix Hernandez? Reverse lock please.
King Felix’s last 4 starts vs. NYY: 4-0, 0.51 ERA, .197 BAA, with 3 complete games.
So uhhhh, everyone must feel pretty confident about this, right?
Considering the matchups, I expect a 2 – 0 M’s win with a CG SHO by Felix.
Maybe tomorrow, guys. Maybe tomorrow.
Not a pitch has been thrown yet!
yeah, but the Mariners have no offense, so we should be fine, right?
Right……?
Can’t wait until Felix is a Yankee later this year.
/unrealistic delusional Yankees fan’d
Cervelli and Brackman for King Felix. They’ll jump at that deal.
/your trade proposal sucks’d and sarcasm’d
Kei igawa for Felix straight up
Let’s be realistic here…gotta throw in Buddy Carlyle to sweeten the deal.
Buddy Carlyle > Manny Banuelos + Dellin Betances
This will probably suck.
So, uh, how we all feel about the Yankees facing King Felix, is that how the fans of the 29 other teams feel when Mariano Rivera comes into the game?
It’s probably how they feel when the Yankees come to town.
There’s no way the Yanks get josh Bell at #51 with Boston picking four times before them.
Expecting the no no here. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they can pull off a hit.
would you accept hitting Felix?
Jeter making contact against Felix? Sure.
Jeter just did. It would have been a base hit too if it didn’t carom off Hernandez’s arm right to the shortstop.
Yeah I know. It’s a plus.
At least they won’t get perfect game’d.
This town has some fucked up BAbip rules.
that was a good set of at-bats: Jete sent a wakeup call, and Tex just missed on the low fastball. Arod was on the beam, just a little off in timing.
“Smoak On the Water” lol Coney
Alright Yankees, let’s get some long at-bats going. We need to make Hernandez work if we want to win this ballgame. Oh shit I forgot, Robinson Cano is leading off.
You feel dumb.
AAAnd he hits a home run. The Yankees love proving me wrong.
Damn Robbie
Great All Around AB by Cano and of course hits the Homer.
There’s your run, Ivan. Make it stick.
(yay robbie)
Such a beautiful swing.
oh, cano is loooking good
That’s all the runs we need.
G’night, everybody!
Russell with teh patience.
Doesn’t Robbie know that “real” baseball is a double, advance to third on a groundout to second and score on a sacrifice fly. (or better yet, bunt him to third and safety squeeze the run)
This strike zone is a gem.
Jorge is so slow
swish with hte loud swish. The King didn’t like that…
Coney with the FIP reference!
David Cone is the best analyst in baseball.
David Cone is my hero.
Chone Figgins really irritates me.
This was random but yeah, totally.
FIPFIPFIPFIPFIPFIPFIPFIP
David Cone aka tangotiger.
Unfortunately, Ken is mis-understanding the point of FIP.
No, a pitcher shouldn’t be penalized for getting better run support. But we should be able to tell which pitcher actually pitched better, regardless of run support.
According to Paul O’Neill, “computers can’t hit home runs.”
the Yanks are presenting a good challenge.
Making Felix work, at least. He looks uncharacteristically wild.
I’m wondering if his arm is sore from that Jeter liner and maybe that’s affecting him. I hope so, but hopefully not with any long-term affects.
He’s at 40 after 2. last inning was 6,5,5,6,5.
Usually I’d be mad that the Yanks got Martin to 2nd with one out and stranded him, but it’s Felix, so I’m just excited to see someone make it to 2nd.
Obviously Angels but in before someone says Felix is worth more than every other pitcher in the MLB combined.
Safeco: where careers go to die
Unless you’re a pitcher.
-Jason Vargas
Walking the leadoff man is a baseball no-no. Right Michael Kay?
Kenny’s kind of annoying me tonight, which is rare. Cone is God.
The Mariners get all the BABIP luck.
another one of these fucking innings….
Not quite 11 innings, and they’ve gotten BABIP’d to death.
Down, down Ivan. Get the ball down if you plan on getting a ground ball.
I thought Jeter had a chance at 1st for the DP…
I think Kennedy should have forced Martin to make a decision.
Effing A.
how many runs can this sh*t offense score without getting a hit? ridiculous
Death by RBI ground out.
The Mariners just get all the luck don’t they? Fucking RBI groundouts and cheap I field hits.
*infield
Fucking typos
Can we send Seattle to the NL?
Apart from the walk, Nova’s done everything right this inning, and has been screwed at each turn. I thought double play as each of the next three batters had the ball leave their bats.
BABIP has been deeply cruel to the Yanks this year.
This is the BABIP gods getting back at us for the 1962 World Series.
Taking that whole “revenge is a dish best served cold” thing to new lengths.
Jeter has had some good swings today. He was BABIP fucked out of a hit in the first inning.
I like Jeter’s aggressiveness tonight, at the plate and on the bases. Gotta make things happen against Felix.
Oh crap.
He was out.
Thanks, Derek.
Teix!
too many homers…
Yes!!!!!
Teix message!
TEIXEIRA IS FEELING IT!
And boom goes the dynamite.
Did you watch Tosh.0 recently?
Dylan Teixeira spits hot fire.
Teix helps my team AND helps my team today! Win.
That man is on fire! 3 runs off Felix through 2 1/3rd is outstanding.
oh, my Tex! you are offically on fire.
YESSS!
Too many homers.
STOP HITTING HOME RUNS WHERE ARE THE SACRIFICE BUNTS
LMAO!!!!!
That’s a belly to belly in YS3.
TEX!!!!!
This is the first time in my life that I have ever witnessed the Yankees score 3 runs off Felix.
Cool.
A win would be even cooler.
Wow… we could possibly knock Felix out in less than 6 at this pace…
The way King felix is pitching should only tell us one thing…….He is not far from being traded to us!!!
And then traded to the Rangers after the trade gets accepted.
Felix is awesome, but those who were expecting him to throw a shutout against the best hitting team in the league were being a little ridiculous. His ERA is 3, not 0.00.
Career 2.73 ERA against the Yankees. A team right now is inconsistent on offense.
Jeter probably had the most important hit ball when Felix got hurt.
How are they inconsistent on offense? People keep saying that but I don’t think it’s true. Every team score more runs some nights and fewer runs other nights. Also, 2.73 ERA does not mean scoring a couple runs off of him should be a surprise.
He threw 26 innings against the Yankees last season and gave up one earned run. Pessimism was warranted entering this game.
Yanks have 3 runs off Felix on 2 HRs, and the M’s have already had their ridiculous BABIP inning. This might be the best I’ve ever felt about facing Felix.
Does anyone know what that AT&T commercial with the “flash mob” thing is about? What the fuck is a “flash mob?” What am I missing?
I MUST KNOW!!!
A bunch of random people meet up in a place at a given time and do something stupid to get attention and then just turn and leave.
Ichiro’s walk-up music for this at-bat was S&M. Love it.
Good grief. Yankees score, Nova puts the leadoff hitter on without making him get a hit. Twice now.
Wow, Kim Jones must have gone back and forth between Swisher and Gutierrez about 10 times to relay that entire dialog.
Ummm…throw strikes, Nova?
Really random, really delayed, and has NOTHING to do with baseball, but How did Derrick Rose win MVP? He wasnt in the top 5 in any major categories and shot 44%. Am I missing something? Howard or LeBron were much better choices and without Howard the Magic are Cavs bad.
His team was the “surprise” team + best record + Lebron hate + highlights + right place + right time + etc….
Well said
But common the Bulls weren’t bad last year and they still had Boozer and Noah. Minus Dwight, the Magic have what, Turkoglu? Nelson? MVP should be given the either the best player, LeBron, or the most important to his team’s success, Dwight.
Boozer and Noah aren’t that good at all.
The Bulls were .500 last year. And I don’t think anyone expected them to win 62 games this year.
This. Rose is a good player but since people on the Bulls got hurt and the fact that they got the number open seed made people vote for Rose.
Advanced stats also agree.
My argument is that if you’re a PG MVP you should be in the top 5 in assists, and he had 7 per. For comparison, Rondo and CP3 had about 10 APG. He takes a lot of shots though, but he only shoots 44%. I just think there were much better choices than Rose but the media began drooling over him at the end of the season and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Back to Howard, he was scoring 40 a game in the playoffs and stillnlosing, which shows his support is terrible. Separate thought: Orlando needs to give Dwight some support. Get him another good scorer
Not that I follow basketball, but the obvious answer is that award voters in all sports are idiots.
So much of this.
It was bit of a slight at Miami, too.
The NBA MVP voting, where archaic thinking happens.
Derrick Rose definitely deserved the MVP award.
Charles Barkley’d
Seriously, it was like the voters were like “ooooh that was a fancy crossover! He did a flashy dunk! MVP!!!” dunks are cool and stuff, but not that great when there’s nobody within 15 feet of you (talking about that dunk against the Knicks).
Well everyone is going to be open against the Knicks…
Different issue hahaha
*cries inside*
I still believe to this day if Olerud doesnt get hurt during the 2004 ALCS the Yankees win that series. Dont ask me how or why though lol.
Or if The Giambino wasn’t suspended.
Nova’s pants are really bothering me. My OCD is starting to kick in.
Ivan Nova isn’t locating very well with his curveball tonight at all.
I’ve had enough walks for a lifetime between yesterday and today
Jesus Christ this team’s OBP is in the damn .200s.
Nova is approaching a 1:1 K/BB ratio for the season.
christ, I almost lost it there.
That would have been so infuriating if Jeter effed that up.
ow, Jete! no heart attacks, please.
I almost got really mad with Jeter on that play.
wow
How the hell…3 runs off of Felix!
Jeter
Another inning, another leadoff runner.
Derek. Please. SMH.
I’m surprised he even got to that ball.
oh, fuck me…
Nova can’t stand prosperity.
Now the Mariners will hit two groundballs and get those runs in. Jeter may have cost us the lead.
Please don’t blow another multi-run lead against the fucking Mariners.
Well, here’s some runs. Pitcher who can’t strike out batters with 2 on and no out..
Fuck.
Nice job, Nova.
fucking brutal, come on.
Le sigh.
Nova is not a major league starting pitcher.
I think that’s a stretch. He isn’t particularly good, though.
He’s the Yankees’ 5th starter. What do you want from 5th starters?
A pitcher who can strike out more than 4.5/9?
Try Noesi. He can’t be worse.
Nova entering this game: 4.28 ERA, 4.29 FIP, 4.44 xFIP.
That’s pretty much standard fare for a No. 5, and you’re going to get these types of ugly outings from every five throughout baseball. That’s the way it is.
I WANT 5 ACES!!!
Take a quick list at major league pitchers who have K/9 less than 5 and BB/9 > 3. Heck, do this for the past decade. I’ll give you a hint: the list isn’t very large, and for those on it, it’s very ugly.
Of course it’s ugly. Nova isn’t very good, as I’ve already acknowledged. No. 5 starters in general aren’t. What do fans except from the fifth guy in the rotation?
Fuck you Nova, you are absolute fucking garbage
Terrible job Nova
Another blown lead
Are you freaking kidding me? Making me sick.
Having trouble beating another shit team.
Nice.
We are facing the best pitcher in the league. It ain’t gonna be easy.
They’ve done quite well against both Pineda and Felix. Given that, to lose both of these games would really hurt.
And we haven’t lost this game yet. Last night’s loss had nothing to do with Nova. If Nova holds them to 3 through 6 IP I don’t know how much more you can ask from a 5th starter.
Agreed. By no means am I quitting on this game.
I’m agreeing with Don Juan. I’m shocked.
When you’ve scored 3 runs off him and you’re playing one of the worst offensive teams, it shouldn’t be that hard.
Nova and his over 1.5 WHIP and horrible strikeout rate is beginning to annoy me.
at least Hernandez isn’t looking like Walter Johnson tonight. The Yankees still got this IMO.
trade for a guy who can strike some people out please
BS. im done with this crap.
You’re done with a 3-3 game in the 4th inning of the best pitcher in the AL facing the Yankees 5th starter? Ok then.
Well, at least Jeter won’t get an error anymore….
its funny how people complain about Nova as he is matching felix
Mariners offense ? Yankees offense
that “?” was supposed to be a not equal sign, but I guess that doesn’t work on RAB
according to most of the posters here, the yankees have the worst offense ever and dont know how to score
He’s not matching Felix.
you do realize that this inning started with a misplayed ground ball?
Sure. But then there was two doubles, a wild pitch, and a single.
And did anyone actually expect Jeter to make that play?
fallacy of the predetermined outcome
/michael kay’d
Doesn’t absolve him of the inning. Can’t let the bottom of the Mariners’ order smack you around like that.
but olivo kennedy and ryan are the mariners hottest hitters right now
Another lesson for young Ivan: even Jete can make a mistake. Can’t let it get you.
If Felix got to face the Mariners offense he would probably pitch a perfect game 95% of the time.
Yankees: 117 wRC+
Mariners: 82 wRC+
Ivan Nova needs to hold it right here.
I really Really dislike nova…never liked him. I hope hughes come back to replace him or we we trade for someone because nova is just not good.
bulloney! Nova came up unheralded, and he a little fortitude away from consistent success.
Nova just not doing anything right this inning.
Carlos Silva, white courtesy phone.
Carlos Silva, white courtesy phone.
Carlos Silva doesn’t K anyone and had a 4.63 and 5.97 FIPs his last two seasons in the AL. I don’t think he’ll be much better than Nova, and almost certainly won’t be any savior.
I don’t expect him to be.
But I’m not sure he could be much worse than Nova.
ok, NOW this sucks balls.
Get Noesi up. At least he might strike out a few guys.
Start warming up a long man. Nova just can’t miss bats and is throwing FBs right down the fuckin middle.
ok, I’ve officially had enough of Nova. New starting pitcher please Cashman.
cashman, needs to do it fast this fucking nova i cant watching him any more.
Can’t believe this inning is STILL going on….
Hector Noesi warming up in the bullpen? Best decision by Girardi all year.
Phil Hughes please come back healthy…
Piss poor performance by Nova. These last two nights illustrate the need for a starter who can go more than 5 innings. 3/5 starters are 5 inning pitchers right now.
I hate ivan nova so much…he should not be in the majors right now…AND we have better options
Jeez, he’s been a serviceable 5th starter. How the hell do you hate him?
i don’t know…i have an irrational hate for him ever since we failed to trade him and joba for haren =\
At least you acknowledge it’s irrational hatred.
i’m usually rational until it comes to nova
Right now , Nova is what he is … a spot starter. Not saying Nova can’t be better than that eventually, but he probably needs to go down to AAA to find his location. Also, that straight FB does him no favors.
His fastball isn’t straight. That’s the first thing everyone says when someone struggles, this guy’s fastball is straight. Never fails.
Let’s lose a series to the Meriners.
Considering they are such a power house and are known for their clutch hitting and ability to put runs on the board, I totally expected this to be a tough series.
I mean, look at their lineup. Chone Figgins? Justin Smoak? This lineup is stacked. They are really good at getting on base and driving the guys in. They also have power hitters like Ichiro and Olivo.
God. To even think the Yankees had a chance…SMH.
Whatevs. I’m over it. The Mariners are such a great organization and they have been such a tough team to face over the years, that it really is not that embarassing to lose to them.
Let’s not get mad at Nova. He worked really hard and he’s still learning and it’s not that easy to get the Mariners out.
And don’t getme started on that BP. Yankees don’t stand a chance against them.
Shut down BP + STACKED offense = super star team = 2011 Seattle Mariners.
Except you cite the M’s shitty lineup, whereas you neglect the obvious strength that is this part of their rotation.
That’s a bit unfair.
I was just being sarcastic about how surprised I am at all of the offense we’ve seen from the Mariners. Lol
I know their SP is good, but I didn’t include that, because it’s true and takes away from the tone.
Your joke
___________
My head
That Derek Jeter commercial was so out of place I laughed.
lol babip
vintage Jeter tonight.
cheapest double ever.
I look away for 15 minutes. what the fuuuuu?
Pitching fail.
Whatevs I’m already over it.
I can’t wait to play Oakland to see Dallas Braden and his mound.
How many times do you think they bring that non story up?
I say 15.
Except he’s out for the year, so maybe once at most.
Oh. I didn’t know he was out.
Cool.
That pitch was sick.
Please don’t RISP fail A-Rod, PLEASE!
Fuck. That’s what happens when you swing at the first pitch.
wasting a Jeter double is unforgivable.
RISPfail FTL….
Damn Alex … first pitch swinging producing that weak ass fly? Just damn…
Bright side: 85 pitches through five. Felix probably isn’t much longer for this game. So, if you can’t beat him, beat the bullpen.
We’ve got him on the ropes, Teix just worked a long at bat into a walk and Alex swings at the first pitch. Brilliant.
Carlos Silva’s lowerst FIP in the AL in any season was 4.18 and has one season of a K/9 greater than 4 (2008, 4.05)
But he’s a veteran pitcherâ„¢ who knows how to pitch.©
But he’s the savior!
At the end of the day, No. 5 starters are crappy; people need to deal with it. Given his performance so far, the Yankees should stick with Nova until they can find someone(s) via trade. There isn’t a better solution within the organization.
There isn’t a better solution within the organization.
Maybe, maybe not. But there are alternatives. One is on the mound right now.
I doubt Noesi would do any better than Nova has this year. If he gets his chance and does, awesome.
Not going to know until they try. If Noesi doesn’t work, then try Phelps. If Phelps doesn’t work, try Mitchell. Don’t be content with mediocrity when there are viable alternatives.
Fair enough. But I have extremely low expectations for all of those alternatives.
Just keep pulling people in and out of AAA for the chance that one might be (at most probably) slightly better? Maybe it works. Would the roster manipulation be that easy (seriously asking)?
I’m not too tied to Nova but I think the hatred of him is wrong. If you really hate Nova you probably had too high expectations for a)Nova b)5th Starters
Agreed. I’m all for taking him out of the rotation the minute something better comes along. I just don’t think that something is around right now, and that it’ll ultimately come via trade.
It’s not hatred, it’s frustration. When your offense can’t do jack, you’re going to have more aggravation when your pitcher gives up even a couple of runs.
He’s the 5th starter. No matter who’s in that spot, they’re very likely to give up runs. Maybe you have too high expectations?
Nova’s shown tons o’ potential. Be foolish to give up on him.
What do you consider to be a ’5th starter’? The guy who goes into the season as the ’5th starter’, or the ’5th best starter in the rotation’? The latter, yeah, most teams have very crappy 5th starters. But by the former, there are a lot of much better 5th starters in baseball today.
Nova has ZERO upside. ZERO. He doesn’t get enough Ks, he walks too many, and he’s not such an extreme groundballer that he can get away with the low Ks and high BBs. Period. FACT. End of story. Whatever you need me to say to end this statement conclusively.
Noesi has upside. Noesi can actually get swinging strikes from time to time. I’d much rather see Noesi take his licks than watch a starter with ZERO UPSIDE pitch every 5 games.
there are a lot of much better 5th starters in baseball today.
A lot? Really? There may be some, but how many do you mean by a lot? Nova is 24, I don’t think he’s a completely finished product.
Look, I’m not saying Nova is great, but if you really think there are tons of available pitchers that would be significantly better than Nova, then I think you’re being unrealistic.
Where did I say “available”?
You didn’t, but then what’s the solution? And I really don’t think there are “a lot of much better 5th starters in baseball today.”
5th starters that I consider better than Nova:
1) Bergesen, no.
2) Aceves, yes.
3) Nova, heh.
4) Sonnanstine, slightly better, but a wash.
5) Villanueva, no.
6) Gavin Floyd, hell yes.
7) Talbot, slightly better, but meh.
8) Oliver, unknown.
9) Duffy, probably.
10) Baker, yes.
11) Chatwood, higher upside.
12) Oscoso (who?; Oakland was a ‘hell yes’ before Braden and Ross got hurt).
13) Pineda (hahahaha yes; entered season as 5th starter so counts).
14) Holland, hell yes.
NL later
1) Beachy/Minor – hell yes.
2) Marlins only have 4 starters listed on depth chart…
3) Dillon Gee – yep.
4) Vance Worley – yep.
5) Gorzellany – yes to a wash.
6) Doug Davis – not anymore.
7) Reds don’t have a 5th starter on current depth chart – Leake is a yes.
8) Aneury Rodriguez – no. Better Ks, too many HRs.
9) Narveson – yes.
10) Karstens – not believing his 2011 #s, so no. But if he continues, yes.
11) McClellan – yes.
12) Collmenter – no, though he’d be more entertaining to watch.
13) Nicasio – dunno.
14) Garland – he’s Nova’s upside… so no.
15) Moseley – ha, no.
16) Vogelsong – Heh, I guess.
Umm it might be easier to score runs if you take a pitch or 2.
But I could be wrong.
Sweet play, Alex
A-Rod with the range
a 1-2-3 inning for a Yankee pitcher? unheard of.
He’s not even dealing tonight.
Just score some runs.
Robbie is heating up: good things ahead.
he’s as hot as a Dodger Stadium bathroom
how hot is that, Cy? Favorite hangout?
apparently a bathroom or a storage closet is on fire/smoking on the upper level at Dodger Stadium, lol.
well then, yep, smoke is starting to curl out of his ears.
Ok, Coltrane was trying to hit a homer there.
Still think Javy should have won the CYA but whatever.
Was that a hit and run? If so, it was fucking stupid.
Ugh … The inning went to shit on that play.
dumb … just dumb
Why you would steal with Cano and Posada at the plate is beyond me. Posada can’t hit a lick anymore.
To help get Jorge going.
Cano is stupid.
Why would you steal if you’re not fast?
It might have been a missed hit and run. Sometimes slow players catch the pitcher unaware and can steal a base. Pretty harsh to call him stupid because of that play.
Yeah. My bad.
He’s a cutie. I didn’t mean it.
Haha, I don’t care about his appearance, but to each their own.
Cano is now an even .500 SB% in his career. 24 SBs and 24 CSes.
But… but… he’s a latino middle infielder, he must be fast!
/stereotype’d
Girardi just wanted to make sure Felix will be able to stay in for the seventh
..and Arod’s last AB didn’t help
And now Gardner is making sure he can pitch the eight also
Getting a lead against a really good pitcher, losing that lead, getting guys thrown out at second….
Didn’t we watch this game last night?
Vile creatures past two days.
Whatevs. It’s late.
Is Peguero much of a prospect? I mean, he’s huge, but he looks clueless.
looks like the JoVa of the Mariners
I was thinking WilyMo Pena
Hope this BABIP equalizes at least a little over the next 3.
Geez, Russell. How aboot you be a man and suck it up, eh?
Your Joking right.
No matter what Grit Gutner is doing with the bat, you can count on his glove. So. Much. Range.
King Felix is out for another inning thanks to Girardi’s brilliant hit and run with a slow runner and a struggling hitter. Best pitcher in the league has a pitch count approaching 100 and Girardi does everything to accommodate him.
Thanks, Smoak
Smoak looking shaky with the glove tonight. He’s supposed to be pretty good with the glove, right?
alright, swish, perfect rally starter!
Followed by the perfect rally killer. By Gardner no less.
Just the way things are going. This f-ing sucks.
The one time Gardner doesnt bunt…..
fucking amazing…he’ll probably pitch 8 now
After that DP, my dad says they should have bunted.
I wonder……
oh, no, Brettski
Brilliant, Girardi. We need one run and you don’t bunt that runner over to 2nd for Jeter who has a couple hits today.
brett can’t bunt
Gardner can’t bunt, and you can’t count on Jeter to do anything productive.
jete is stokin’ it up, tho: two dinks and a walk. Guy’s getting an edge on.
Yeah because Jeter has been soo automatic as of late. Give me a break.
Dammit Gardner!!!
Felix’s last inning? … I hope so.
Don’t Swing Jeter.
Man Felix Ball has so much wicked movement.
CURTIS!!!
GRANDERSON FOR MVP !
Holy mistimed leap!
GRANDERSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNN
oh thank god for Granderson
shit is all right in the universe again
Booooom.
Curtis!
THE GRANDY MAN CAN
That a boy, Curtis. Would have the lead if Girardi had bunted.
Yeah, it doesn’t work like that.
You’re assuming Gardner, who has been a horrible bunter all year, would have successfully bunted. That’s hardly a sure thing.
Michael Kay would like to talk to you about a certain fallacy.
Grandy!
C-Grand!
Hail the Grand tripler!
Grandy!!!
David Cone is keeping me in stitches.
I want Laffey the lefty, please.
Can’t believe they are leaving him in there, they are play with fire, he’s gassed.
C’mon Arod, shut up these booers.
how the fuck do you let him keep pitching
jesus 123 pitches
Thank you Grandy.
Really?
Still throwing 95 mph with his 125th pitch. Damn.
don’t fuck up Alex.
I don’t think making an out when King Felix is pitching is necessarily ‘fucking up’.
Wedge wouldn’t dare to yank Felix without his permission
He’s gotta throw a breaking ball here, right?
look King Felix have alter egos, and could pitch left: http://bit.ly/f1mG4F
HAHAHA. Larry Bernandez.
Cano to cleanup spot!!
Robertson/Joba time?
Wouldn’t kill to take a pitch, or something.
Can’t wait for 40 year old ARod, lmao.
I can wait.
That was nice outing by Noesi, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yankees skip Nova’s next start since it fall on Thursday which is an off day. Time for the pen to keep the Mariners at bay.
You cant fault Arod for striking out against King Felix. But that at-bat was awful. Swung at every pitch despite the fact he had walked 2 of previous 3 batters and was approaching 130 pitches.
Agree, not ARod’s best AB.
I hope David Robertson is a very poor man at the end of this season.
Even though Robertson’s BB rate is close to 7 having a K rate near 15 has kept his FIP below 2 which is quite impressive.
Is it me or has Robertson is throwing alot harder this year compare to previous years?
If the gun is accurate, he is.
http://www.fangraphs.com/pitch.....8;pitch=FA
It started at the end of last season.
So far he’s one MPH faster than last year.
Cust has 52Ks in 146 PA, does he have naked photos of every GM on the West Coast?
B-e-a-utiful.
Strikes out the side. Should of put him in last night’s ballgame.
Before we gave up the lead. Robertson can pitch in any inning and should be out 8th inning guy when Soriano returns.
So you want him to pitch in the sixth inning and be the eighth inning guy?
Robertson the the 6th, 7th, and 8th.
1996 Mo
Most glorious inning of pitching this year.
That was Rivera-esque in its dominance. 39 K in 21 innings is just downright nasty. Even if he walks 7 batters the the remaining 13 hitters that do make contact at say a .330 BABIP will only lead to about 4 hits per 9 inning.
Robertson 4 prez
And that’s how someone is supposed to face scrub hitters. Order is restored.
D-ROB wanted to keep things light today. That’s a great relief appearance.
sweet music from Robby
dominance. And without any runners on base.
Put him out for the 8th, domination homes.
Seriously. Have to figure he’ll be off limits tomorrow anyway, plus CC’s going…
why not leave Noesi in the game?? It’s only tied, and DRob has been used a lot.
KK(backwards)KRob.
3 D-Rob strikeouts = $300 more to Alabama tornado recovery. Win-win.
Now if the Yankees could just win.
Robbie done smoked it, Cy.
drob is ridic
This is a good move. Once Chavez returns he and Andruw should platoon at DH.
Wright looked the strong righty last night. Laffey was no laffin’ matter, either.
Andruw is 8/24 against Wright with 3 HRs if that means anything
make that 8/25, sigh.
Hopefully this game can end as quickly as possible. I want to see that movie “Too Big To Fail” on HBO.
Make sure you rent “Inside Job” to get the non-dramatized version, too.
yea, but it’s getting too Late to Watch, no?
I seen the beginning of it couple of says ago, so im going to try to catch the middle of it.
Out of all pitchers with a min of 10 innings pitched, D-Rob has the fourth highest K rate. Sadly, Phil Hughes has the lowest.
If Andruw gets on, does he PH for Swisher as well?
uh oh, Joe is smokin’ Jorge.
Ugh These anti-smoking commercials are so graphic.
I wonder why that is.
Maybe they’re necessary, maybe they’re not, but they’re all so hard to watch, even as a non-smoker.
I agree. I don’t smoke either. I don’t particularly care for those who do smoke (I’m pretty much allergic to it), and I think if someone wants to smoke that’s his/her decision.
But I do think people should be smart enough not to smoke around a pregnant woman/not smoke if you’re pregnant. And frankly if shock imagery is what gets through to a person, then I’m for it.
Besides, you can always change the channel.
I sincerely doubt the shock imagery succeeds at all.
Agreed. That shit annoys me more than anything else. I don’t smoke. I’ve never smoked. I’ve never even held a cigarette in my hands. I’d appreciate not being subjected to this crap so smokers can fail to be convinced to quit.
Preaching to the choir don’t work.
Yeah, pretty sure smokers know that cigarettes are terrible for you and everyone knows pregnant women shouldn’t smoke. I really don’t like seeing a premature baby struggling to breathe when I’m trying to enjoy a baseball game.
The Yankees listened to me.
Another nice and easy inning, DRob.
Girardi must be surfing RAB on his cell phone between innings, left DRob in.
Yes. Love the second inning for Robertson.
OMG! This is against the book. Call the press.
Who’s the first to second guess Girardi for leaving Robertson in? C’mon, someone has to do it, even if you do it tomorrow or the next game. No move can go un-second guessed.
Can’t disagree with Giradi with this move, hopefully D-Rob makes Giradi look smart.
Hmmmmmmm…
Well that was a short leash.
Im sorry but I don’t get this move. Why Bring him in and then take him out for the slightest trouble. Let Roertson pitch.
Not really in love with the pull, but I guess you don’t want to push Robertson way past 25 pitches. Hopefully, Joba only has to pitch the 8th after the Yanks tack on a couple runs next half inning.
Now with Joba coming into the game in the 8th hopefully Yankees can take the lead in next 2 innings cause if not than it is a scrub reliever in the 10th most likely.
Streaker? mad old school, lol
Is KFC still open?
Streaker!!!!
A streaker? Maybe it was bodysuit man.
I hope security is bashing these people with those giant police flash lights.
Coney making a nice joke at least.
Is there some reason why fans cheer idiots who run onto the field?
Oh, he was streaking? Well, that makes it ok then.
I would have cheered for that guy in the Astros game who did some spiderman shit and actually got away. That was entertaining as hell.
Sorry, Ivan, short game delay for another Seattle Streaker.
With Joba in the game all I can say is at least Jose Lopez no longer plays for the Mariners.
He don’t play for no one right now.
Got DFA’d by Colorado to make room for Eric Young Jr. That’s gotta hurt.
Doesn’t look like he is carrying bail money.
If this was the Roman Circus no one would dare streak.
LOL.
Wow, almost killed Jobber.
Jobber is broken
Strikes, Joba. WTF.
HOLY FUCK
Holy ARod, wow
Holy crap. Alex.
WOW ty A-rod, I’ll forgive you for that terribad AB now
tell me Alex can’t play a good third base.
A-Rod makes it look easy.
Gamesaver.
Seattle needs tazers, another fan on the field
you sometimes forgot how good arod was, then you see shit like that and youre just like oh yea he could do that
Another fan on the field? Just shoot the next one, they’ll learn.
did he just say 4 people?
Yes! I am sort of surprised that there is no mass rushing of like 5 or 10 people at a time. That I would want to see.
I was just thinking about that
a flash mob meeting at a stadium to streak in body suits or something
Sounds good!
That would be so badass in a terrible terrible way.
Swisher at .201….barely hanging on.
Swisher is awful.
Swisher rules
Anytime Swisher wants to do something, it’d be great.
With the way Swisher continues to swing LH that platoon Girardi hinted at last night might soon be implemented.
Perception versus stats. Swish seems to swing and miss waaaaaay more than anyone else in the line up. Is this true?
who leads the team in strike outs?
that would be the grandy man with 46
9.2% swings and misses, tied with Granderson and A-Rod for the highest among the regulars.
http://www.fangraphs.com/winss.....ason1=2011
Thanks Mike. jon just fyi you can strike out without swinging and missing and you can swing and miss in a PA without striking out.
I thought the Mariners bullpen isnt very good.
Gardner back in a bit of a slump.
hHitters 6-9: 0-15, 1 BB……YAY!!!
This is getting ridiculous, 6 shutout innings so far by the Mariner bullpen this series.
end it in the 10th please, not staying up much longer.
have a feeling you won’t have to wait till the tenth for this to end
I believe in Jobber
Yeah.
I’ma turn it off now. Goodnight.
Glad I was wrong. Nice job by Joba.
If Yankees dont score in the 10th assuming Mo isnt brought in this game will probably end in the 10th considering the non-Mo relievers left.
Yankees have 2-3-4 up in the 10th, they will take the lead and bring in Mo for the save.
Good job by Joba.
Somebody a homer now, I want to go to bed.
Time for the middle of the order to do some damage and then give to MARIANO.
I like that Robertson and Joba were allowed to eat up 3 innings between them. And they got 5 K’s, pretty sweet.
League owns us
Boone LOLgan? TV off if they don’t score here.
Shit. We need the lead or Logan will give the Mariners a run in the bottom.
Boone Logan?? But a lefty is leading off. Better score now so Mo can come in.
Swinging in a 3-0 count? Why?
He hasn’t grounded out or bunted out yet…
Jack Cust: .689 OPS, 102 OPS+.
Where the hell did all the offense go?
The hitters have stopped eating their spinach.
Chone Figgins disease is communicable
Dude Teixeira can not swing on 3-0 there.
come on Coltrane
I smell a Cano hot streak coming
Robbie’s gotta groove on.
Cano is on fire. Granderson is great. Teix is on fire. Arod is hitting (without much power). The Yankees offense is almost there.
Everyone has hit the ball hard this inning.
Mike: Scale of 1-10, how concerned are you about Swisher? (Ten being very, very concerned.)
A six, but that’s up from a four a few weeks ago.
6
Yankees can score 3 against Pineda and 4 against Felix but can’t do a damn thing against the bullpen. WTF!!
Russell Martin is one guy who looks like he’s trying to hit a homerun when he swings. It’s worked out so far, thankfully.
Just missed it, damn it.
dare i say, 1-8 RISP
Logan = game over
Oh good, the Logan-Ayala tag team are in for the inning.
They arent exactly Demolition.
Wow, he got a lefty out.
nice plate discipline by tex. really wise move swinging 3 and 0 in the 10th and grounding out weakly to 2nd. that epitimizes all that is wrong with this team. also a 1 for 8 with RISP is the standard for this inept bunch.
really how can tex swing at that? does Girardi have a take sign in his binder??????????????????
sure Tex is on fire… the guy is hitting 260. that is on fire. the standars has been lowered quite a bit on the team of underperforming hacks….
they have 1 guy hitting over 280……
they cannot hit when it counts the whole lot……
Who cares about .260? His wOBA was .391 entering the game, and has since gone up. Tex has been great.
let me clarify that 260 is number that summarize a whole season, and does not pertain to a streak.
Yes, because batting average is the best and only way to measure a hitter.
Welcome to the 1980s.
Bright colors, bad music, cocaine, and batting average.
Fuck yes
Woo Jeter. Nice play.
Nice, Jeter.
Way to gymnastify it, Derek!
Did boone logan actually just get through a full inning?
And he got two lefties out!
Did he actually get 2 lefties out?
Never doubted Boone Logan would get the job done.
imagine how good gardner would be if he could bunt and could steal early in the count>>>>>>>>>>
was he huge and slow when he was young so he did not work on these skills??????????????
We’re two days from June and could realistically have two regulars on the “interstate.”
Somehow, I’m not sensing World Series champion with this crew, but then again averages are down all over the league.
If the Yankees remembered from last night, they should expect all change-ups and other junk from Pauley.
Apparently Jones wasnt watching the game last night.
Yay Swish
Does everyone in Seattle’s pen throw sinkers?
gotta hand it to Girardi, he’s not a blushing boss.
Shit, that ball gets thru its 1st and 3rd.
Jeter silences some critics with a base hit here.
Oh shit…RISP
It would be nice if Jeter managed to hit the ball out of the infield with a man on base one of these days.
Baby step…
This is irritating.
of course Jeter grounds into double play. Silly me thinking he might actually get a clutch hit for a change
I mean grounds out, not double play. Freudian slip.
Can’t blame you there.
Why is Jeter always the guy in these sotuations? How many times has he actually gotten a hit in these ‘clutch’ situations?
Crap, Ayala vs the bottom of the line-up………..
Ayala?
no friggin way jeter did not drive the run in from 2nd. he is still great. what are eyes see is a dream. the guy just signed a 4 year deal for $60+ mill. we do not want to insult the great 1.
he has 15 rbis, and is hitting under 200 with RISP, I think about 130..
man 3 + years of derek scutaro jeter…. my eyes cannot take it…
Bullshittttt
Haha, real nice Miguel.
Children, that’s why you don’t slide into first base.
That’s what he gets for sliding into first.
Stop it fans, don’t applaud stupidity.
And if Gardner did that I expect you to call him out then.
Melky used to do that shit all the time. Annoying as hell.
Non-sequitir, but ok.
Ken said hustle! Murder him!
If Jeter kept charging the ball instead of assuming the pitcher was going to get it, there’s a chance for an out there.
jeter silenced nothing .the guy is toast. sorry the truth hurts…
jeter is atrocious… his number are significantly worse then last year. but hey they cannot move him down in the order because that would upset him and after all he is all about wins…..
d00d. I’ve ragged on Jeter as much as anyone, but holy hell you’re annoying.
Yes, sliding into first is always a good idea. So MUCH quicker. FAIL.
I would have left Logan in.
Hate to say it, but I’ll be stunned if the Yankees escape this inning.
Same.
Coney is re4ally ripping it up. LOL afire.
Yankees cant seem to throw Olivo out at 1st tonight.
Ayala = white flag
Yes.
http://twitpic.com/540r38
jeter sucks and is hitting first and no one is asking why????????????
they owe him jack…. he is toast and he is the last to know it… his slugging is low 300′s obop is his lifetime batting avg.
http://floppingaces.net/wp-con.....orse-2.jpg
That pitch was DIRTY
Nice play Robbie.
It’s always gotta be an adventure.
sweet, Ayala.
Wow.
2-3-4 hitters for the Yankees this inning. For the love of Mo they have to score this inning.
nice play Jeter … almost makes up for being so unclutch
no slouch at shortstop, either. Great game.
Oh man, someone please tell me Jeter won’t be at short much longer.
Isn’t he in positive territory for all defensive metrics?
His two faux pas were a shock this game because he is so competent.
This is Ichiro’s eighth career 0-for-6, and his first since 2008.
http://www.baseball-reference......i?id=kpM6d
A-rod will hit a HR
Waddyaknow? Both Boone and Ayala did it.
It is the Mariners.
Didn’t help last night.
Yeah, they scored a whopping 4 runs.
Anyone left other than Mo?
Pendleton I guess.
Pendleton.
just Ayala and pennington.
An A-bomb from………………..
Figgins??
Totally crazy that they can’t hit these bums.
Ridiculous.
i can use a beer right now
I miss the days when the Yankees would eat bullpens for breakfast.
Sinker balls. The new poison for our offense.
They actually hit grounders better than anyone else.
http://www.baseball-reference......=2011#gbfb
Hector Noesi>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Luis Ayala. Noesi did a great job tonight in what was his first situation of coming in with runners on base. If he doesn’t wind up staying up here in the bullpen then I think we have found our new Mendoza/Aceves. I hope that Girardi definitely starts using him more than Ayala.
Adam Dunn with his 1 for 7 and Arod with his 1 for 6 havent done my fantasy team’s OBP a favor tonight.
oh, man, a handful of grasws. In seattle.
You gotta be kidding me. Mo is actually gonna lose this game??
I see where this shit is going….god fucking dammit
let’s see some strikeouts, Mo.
let me guess, another RBI ground out coming up.
Kennedy is horrible. Get a DP.
Here comes da bunt.
Whiff and a groundout, please.
Isn’t Kennedy’s numbers vs everyone not very good?
Everyone else, yes. Guy is moving into Yankee killer territory.
LOL
Fuck.
What an annoying lose smfh.
This is such a weird game.
Fuck fuckity fuck fuck fuck.
fuck fuck fuck this fucking useless offense
this team is a fucking joke
IT’S THE FUCKING MARINERS
So fucking angry. GOD DAMMIT MO
Bloop Single. Double. Bloop Single.
Hilarious.
So let me get this straight the Mariners were unable to get runners in scoring position against Ayala but beaten Mo. Explain how this is fair? On one hand you have a future 1st ballot hall of famer while on the other you have our worst and one of the worst relievers in baseball. Shows how screwed up this game can be.
And the Yankees still can’t hit with risp.
Well, Suzyn, no matter how many times I say it…
Hit Pineda?
Loss.
Hit Felix?
Loss.
Fuck fuck fuck. This road trip is going to suck.
We’re doomed!!!!!1
Well, good thing I won’t be able to see the series finale. First two games were absolutely disgusting.
This team fucking sucks right now. And we still have to play 3 at the Angels where we’re like 1-20 the past 5 years….
This series has been much more about our ineptitude than their being good.
This is NOT Mo’s fault, this is the fault of an offense that can’t do SQUAT with RISP.
This is Girardi’s fault. Why pitch Mo when you had Pendleton?
just kidding
Remember what sparked the ’09 team? Girardi getting tossed in Atlanta. This team needs a spark. Badly.
Cervelli already hit a HR.
These comparisons to 2009 need to stop. If the Yankees go on to have 3 consecutive walk-off wins like they had against Minny, it means jackshit.
If they start off 1-8 vs. the Red Sox then finish 9-0 similar to the 2009 team, it means jackshit.
If Cashman makes a “motivational” speech in some National League park this year, it means jackshit.
There’s no point in trying to copy/paste a template of the ’09 season on this year. Different team.
And the players that were on that team are different players noow.
Enogh with the “They gotta do —- because thats what got them going in ’09″
Useless offense, an absolute pile of fucking shit. Can’t manage to scrape a single run off these fucking Mariner’s relievers? This game was a fucking waste of my time
If I have to pick one moment that sticks out, it’s Arod striking out with first and third, two out, and Felix at 127 pitches. He was on the ropes. Gotta take advantage.
If I have to pick one moment it’s the entire fucking team showing up to the ballpark. Why bother if you’re just going to stink up the damn joint?
Oh so you mean the Yankees not getting a hit with risp a moment that sticks out for you?
Welcome to the last 3 weeks.
how many 1-run losses does this team have?
That speaks more to wasted opportunities than to playing teams close.
Oh well, we weren’t supposed to beat the King anyways.
We would have beaten the king, but Nova didn’t do his job and the offense didn’t bother to show up against the bullpen.
I think the Yankees are 12th average wise hitting with risp in the AL
.243 (97 for 400)
disgusting
