Montero homers, Maxwell hurt in SWB win

By

Make sure you scroll down for tonight’s game thread.

Justin Maxwell is your Triple-A International League Offensive Player of the Week while Shaeffer Hall took home Double-A Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors. Amaury Sanit has been placed on the disabled list with some kind of leg muscle issues, and Jordan Parraz was activated to take his place on the roster.

Triple-A Scranton (10-3 win over Indianapolis) they smacked them around so much that Indianapolis had to use a position player to pitch the ninth
Austin Krum, CF: 2 for 6, 1 R, 1 2B
Ramiro Pena, SS: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 BB – 13 for his last 40 (.325)
Jesus Montero, C: 2 for 5, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI – yeah, he really tripled … the homer was an opposite field job and it came off the guy that was the centerpiece of the Tim Hudson trade back in the day … over the last calendar year (473 AB), he’s hitting .317 with 34 doubles, three triples, and 22 homers (.541 SLG, .224 ISO)
Jorge Vazquez, 1B: 0 for 5, 2 K – five for his last 32 (.156) with 15 K
Justin Maxwell, LF: 0 for 1, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB – he also robbed a homerun, but he left the game after hurting his right shoulder on the play
Luis Nunez, 2B: 2 for 3, 3 R, 1 BB
Brandon Laird, 3B: 2 for 5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K – up to .254 after that brutal start
Jordan Parraz, DH: 4 for 5, 1 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI – I guess there was no rust to shake off
Kevin Russo, 2B-LF: 2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Dan Brewer, RF: 1 for 5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Carlos Silva, LHP: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 9-2 GB/FB – 52 of 81 pitches were strikes (64.2%) … that’s a pretty typical Carlos Silva start right there … figure he’s got another starter or two, maybe even three before the mid-June opt-out comes into play
Buddy Carlyle, RHP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2-2 GB/FB – 25 of 41 pitches were strikes (61%)
Eric Wordekemper, RHP: 1 IP, zeroes, 2-1 GB/FB – nine pitches, five strikes

Double-A Trenton (2-1 loss to Altoona)
Ray Kruml, CF & Austin Romine, C: both 1 for 4 – Romine struck out and allowed a passed ball
Corban Joseph, 2B & Yadil Mujica, SS: both 0 for 3 – CoJo walked and whiffed
Bradley Suttle, 3B: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B – he’s been on a nice little tear
Cody Johnson, DH: 2 for 4, 1 2B, 1 RBI – 12 for his last 41 (.293) with five doubles and four homers
The Joses: both 0 for 4 - Pirela struck out twice, but Gil didn’t do anything else
DeAngelo Mack, LF: 1 for 4
Craig Heyer, RHP: 6 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 8-6 GB/FB
Pat Venditte, SHP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 3-1 GB/FB – that runs the scoreless streak up to (I think) 21 innings
Noaya Okamoto, LHP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1-0 GB/FB

High-A Tampa (2-0 win over Jupiter)
Abe Almonte, CF: 2 for 4, 2 K, 1 CS – multiple hits in half of his last six games
Walt Ibarra, SS: 4 for 4, 1 2B, 1 RBI – he had just four hits in his previous 21 at-bats
Rob Lyerly, 3B, Zoilo Almonte, LF & Luke Murton, DH: all 1 for 4 – Lyerly and Almonte each whiffed … Murton doubled and drove in a run
Kevin Mahoney, 1B, Taylor Grote, RF & Kyle Higashioka, C: all 0 for 4 – Mahoney scored a run and struck out twice … Grote struck out
Kelvin Castro, 2B: 1 for 3, 1 R
Jairo Heredia, RHP: 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 WP, 11-2 GB/FB – looks like someone is trying to restore some of that prospect shine … great night
Ryan Flannery, RHP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Low-A Charleston (1-0 loss to Savannah) faced a former Yankees’ draft pick (that didn’t sign)
Slade Heathcott, DH: 0 for 4, 4 K – ouch
Anderson Feliz, 2B, Ramon Flores, RF & Jose Toussen, LF: 0 for 3, 1 K – Feliz and Flores each walked … Feliz also got caught stealing
J.R. Murphy, C: 2 for 4, 1 K – 11 for his last 34 (.324) with six doubles
Kyle Roller, 1B: 1 for 3, 1 BB, 1 K
Rob Segedin, 3B: 0 for 4
Eduardo Sosa, CF & Jose Mojica, SS: both 0 for 2 - Sosa walked and stole a base … Mojica struck out looking then got ejected for arguing the call
Garrison Lassiter, SS: 0 for 1
Nik Turley, LHP: 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 5-2 GB/FB – another solid outing
Tommy Kahnle, RHP: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 3-1 GB/FB

Now that’s what I like to see from Montero.

  2. batman says:

Who would join Pat Venditte fan club if i made one

  3. W.W.J.Montero.D says:

Is it crazy to think Suttle could be an everyday player in the Bronx? Does it even seem like he is possibly gonna be a starter in the bigs?

    • zs190 says:

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy at this point. he’s not really much of a prospect, average defender at 3B/1B that lacks the bat for those positions. If you feel charitable, he’s a fringe prospect that might eventually be a second-division bench guy; if you don’t, he’s a non-prospect.

  4. Will says:

Donnie Collins said on the Times Tribune twitter that he thinks Jesus Montero could get bored in Triple-A, just his opinion though.

  5. infernoscurse says:

now thats what i like to see from jairo heredia

  6. Foghorn Leghorn says:

    Jesus Christ, its about time!

  7. Henry says:

Montero is bored. His defense is getting much better. I guess you missed that.

  8. Gonzo says:

I guess the new narrative is that Jesus is bored at AAA.

  9. CMP says:

Slade hasn’t done much since his suspension. I hope this isn’t anything more than a little slump.

  10. El Caballo says:

Nik Turley, Tommy Kahnle, and Jairo Heredia all having good nights. As a huge pitching prospect junkie (I know, I know, TINSTAAPP), this was an exciting night. Love to see Heredia come back with a vengeance like he has in a few starts so far…Whats the scouting word on him Mike?

  11. Charles says:

I wish the Yanks would give Venditte a real shot, hes been dominating at all levels so far and they just seem to disregard him…

    • emac2 says:

Because they haven’t promoted him in his first 60 days of AA?

    • Mister Delaware says:

Flipside: He gets noticed more because he’s unique. Of the 14 pitchers with 15 or more IPs at Trenton, Venditte has the 9th best ERA. 10th best WHIP. 7th best SO/BB.

(Better put, if he’s a standard 25 year old AA right/lefty reliever putting up those numbers, do people advocate for him?)

      • Slugger27 says:

honestly, i know hes a unique switch pitcher and i still dont really care about him

but to answer your last parenthetical question…. of course not

        • Mister Delaware says:

Same. If were at a game in Trenton, I’m sure I’d love it if he pitched from both sides just because its so weird. That doesn’t mean I want him in the Bronx to face Gonzalez then Youkilis just because he can.

    • batman says:

yea but i hear he’s hung like sasquatch

  12. T-Long says:

Man slade has been struggling. Mike have u heard anything on slade as to why he’s been struggling badly as of late? Is it because of his suspension and should we be concerned?

  13. CMP says:

Mike, any news on Stoneburners injury? He’s missed a month with a “stiff neck”.

  14. Monteroisdinero says:

Any video of the HR and the triple? How the heck did he triple? Must have been a misplay off the wall.

  15. Coolerking101 says:

Ok, it’s June 1, Montero just had back to back multi-hit games and Posada is still hitting way under .200 (and hasn’t hit a HR in 5 weeks). Jorge is hitting .000 against lefties. The Jesus is hitting .394 (35 AB).

    This is getting ridiculous.

The time has come for the Jesus.
