Open Thread: Building Narratives

By

I’m sure most of you a) read xkcd, and/or b) have already seen that today, but I figured I’d post it here for those of you that haven’t. There’s really nothing to add, it’s the history of sports analysis in a one pane comic.

Anyway, here is tonight’s open thread. The Yankees and Mariners start their game a little after 10pm ET, at which point we’ll have a regular game thread. This is to just hold you over. The Mets are playing the Phillies (Capuano vs. Oswalt), and MLB Network will also carry a game. The teams depend on where you live though. The Lightning and Bruins will play Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Finals as well (8pm ET on Versus), winner moves on to face the Canucks in the Stanley Cup Finals. Nothing better than a Game Seven, I say. Talk about anything here as you wait for the game.

This is RAB’s new meme isn’t it?

      It better be!

    YAY XKCD!

And no mouseover text? That’s like 30% of the humor right there :D

I read a few days ago that the millionth comment was close…did I miss it?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      We’re 150 away.

      • Jose the Satirist

The prize should be waiving the $19.23 RAB Paywall price for commenting.

        • Esteban

RAB store t-shirt. I’m not settling for anything less.

2nd prize is a set of steak knives

          3rd prize is you’re fired

      • Esteban

Whoa, and that might be in tonight’s game thread. Should I stay in to have a chance at the millionth comment or go out? Decisions, decisions.

  • Jose the Satirist

    Pretty standard double play:

    • Xstar7

That was ridiculous, and made funny by the fact that the victims were the Mets’ AA affiliate.

      • The Big City of Dreams

        Mediocrity runs throughout the organization.

    Bruins got this tonight.

    • http://www.twitter.com/ngoral Jake LaMotta’s Left Hook

Yeah, if Kaberle and CJ can remember how to run a power play *snicker*.

Tampa wins easily. Downie is going to do his thing around the crease and frustrate Thomas.

      • http://twitter.com/bryanl26 Bryan L

Not a chance. Roloson has been shit all series and it won’t change tonight. He’s gonna get lit up.

  • Mickey Scheister

That Heat comeback last night was nice!

Save us, Dirk. You’re our only hope.

    Gameday of Manny B’s start.

    • Karl Krawfid

      He’s getting squeezed.

  • Big apple

Ole Charlie Furbush is pitching for the Tigers….now that is a funny last name…

Red Sox seem to be clicking on all cylinders right now. Think of how tough they’ll be once Pedroia starts hitting, now that Crawford seems to be coming around.

Gotta keep fingers crossed for Beckett and Buchholz to start regressing.

    • Xstar7

Instead, let’s think of how tough the Yankees will be when THEY’RE firing on all cylinders.

      Was your mind completely blown?

      • Pat D

Not really. My mind has been overworked for the last 6 months, so it’s incapable of being blown.

Also, I know what the Yankees can do.

        • Xstar7

I don’t like focusing on the Red Sox unless:

          1. They’re playing against the Yankees

          2. It’s late in the season and the AL East standings are very close

          3. They’re losing horribly (to any team)

The Yankees are capable of playing every bit as good as the Red Sox are right now. Beckett and Buchholz probably will regress, same with Colon and Garcia. And you can count on Pedroia heating up, same with Swisher.

    • A-Rod’s Wingman

Meh, probably not going to happen. Beckett’s command is back and Buchholz is pretty good at keeping the ball on the ground. The Yankees need to get better if they want to compete with them.

  • Big apple

The sox are hitting well. I wonder about pedroia…..somethin’ just ain’t right about that boy…

  • Monteroisdinero

JoVA hits #18 as he continues to keep pace with the big boys. He is definitely not on steroids. Lol

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

Any place where I can LEGALLY catch the Game online? I don’t get Versus.

  • jon

Just got having from the Portland AA game. Manny was wild but the 2 runs he gave up shouldn’t have happened. the left fielded should have caught the 3 out of inning but got scared of the foul ground wall.

Never a big fan of Gary Carter, or really anyone associated with the 1986 Mets, but never like to see a story like this.

    • The Big City of Dreams

      definitely a sad story
