Game 65: Rain

By

(Photo Credit: Flickr user notladj via Creative Commons license)

It’s raining here in the city, though the forecast seems to indicate that there’s enough of a window to gets tonight’s game in at some point. The Yankees waited until the last possible minute to put Derek Jeter on the disabled list, but no such luck with Russell Martin. He’s still active and hobbled while the bench remains a man short. Anyway, here’s the starting lineup…

Brett Gardner, LF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, DH
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Jorge Posada, 1B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eduardo Nunez, SS
Frankie Cervelli, C

CC Sabathia, SP

Whenever the game starts, you’ll be able to watch it on My9. Enjoy.

Start Time Update: The game will begin at 7:40pm ET. Not bad at all.

Would it be better to have Ramiro Pena play SS than Nunez?

Neither are good hitters, but at least Pena is a bit more sure handed.

    • King George

Not just no, but hell no. I think Pena is below average as it is. At least Nunez has a bat. Pena = Cervelli in terms of hitting.

      • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

I can’t see Pena playing SS at all. He’s way too old and I don’t think he ever had the quickness–yeah, he had great footwork but man. This team is desperate.

        • bonestock94

Pena is 25 and has been pretty good defensively. Not sure what everyones talking about. Nunez is probably better with the bat but is a complete disaster defensively.

          • Pat D

            He’s not a tank.

            • MannyGeee

Neither is the answer, but ‘lesser of two evils theory’ has me taking ‘no bat + great defense’ over ‘meh bat + meh defense… especially if we are dealing with 2 weeks.

going into interleague play however, you are going to see an impacted assload of them both… so there’s that

        • V

Which Pena are you thinking about? Carlos?

Ramiro Pena is an -amazing- fielder.

          • MannyGeee

            Wily Mo

            • YanksFanInBeantown

              Tony

    • Thomas Cassidy

I wouldn’t say Nunez isn’t a good hitter. Is he any worse than Jeter? No. Nunez will be a pretty good hitter when he is developed and isn’t a bad hitter now.

  • Josh S.

I’m sick of seeing Cervelli’s name in the lineup. If Russell Martin can’t play, then put him on the DL and call up Montero already. I think it’s time to see what the kid’s got.

    • Zack D

Montero just missed 4 games with an eye infection and 2 games after that. Think putting him against ML pitching after 1-2 games back is a wise choice?

      • Josh S.

Even after missing those games, I still think Montero would do better than Cervelli. If Cervelli was better defensively then maybe it’d be a different story. But all around, I think Cerv is garbage.

        • Zack D

Oh I hate Cervelli, but IMO it’s not about him. Don’t think it’s a wise decision to throw a 20 year old kid to ML pitchers after he sat out a week just because I hate Cervelli.

    • Epy0n

Montero cant catch and has not proven his bat can do work yet as advertised.

      • FIPster Doofus

Cervelli can’t catch or hit, so there’s that.

        • Epy0n

          Touche

      • Guest

Please, look at his numbers as a 20 year old in AAA. I think they make a pretty strong argument that he is ready to do work in the majors.

And his numbers from this year, while down, do nothing to convince me that he has “lost the magic” from last year or whatever. All they do is tell me his power stroke is in a bit of a slump. I have full confidence that its still there.

  • Pat D

Song of the Day: Rolling Stones’ “Memo from Turner.”

Probably a fun karaoke song, since a lot of the lyrics are very insulting and not P.C.

    • FIPster Doofus

Memo to Justin Turner: Ryan Zimmerman finally makes his glorious return, so get back on my fantasy team’s bench.

      • V

I tried trading Longoria+Hanson+RP for Braun+Zimmerman a month ago, but the other guy didn’t bite. Meh.

  • Guy Montag

There is no excuse for Cervelli starting yet again when a better option is sitting down in AAA. We can beat Ogando with CC on the mound but we’d be a lot better off with someone at C that can hit and can throw more than 2/20 runners out. Texas loves to run run run, good thing CC is on the mound tonight to negate that.

    • Thomas Cassidy

Cervelli throws out 10% of runners? Wow. It seemed a lot lower than that, like 0%. Every ball thrown into CF, it’s the Cervelli way.

      • YankeesJunkie

This. Cervelli’s defense is fairly terrible and his offense is non existent. Give Montero a shot Cashman!

        • Thomas Cassidy

They either need to call up Montero or trade him. I honestly think he’s fucking bored in AAA. He would be our 3rd best hitter, maybe our 2nd, depending on my mood with Tex (Jason Giambi with a better glove, I’m getting fucking sick of watching this goofy fuck pop up to an infielder). And I can’t stand Cervelli. He is one guy I would love to see shatter his ankle like Jason Kendall. But I liked Kendall.

          • Zack D

So basically, when Tex pops up he’s a goofy fuck, but you like him when he’s #2 in AL in HRs or has the 3rd highest wOBA for AL 1B.

By the way, “Giambi with a better glove” is not an insult.

            • DCBX

Yeah, last I checked the guy is still employed (in the NL!) at 40. Just sayin.

          • MannyGeee

            yeah…

            wait. what??

          • MannyGeee

in an hour, you’re gonna feel like an asshole.

  • Brooklyn Ed

Cashman on Francesa earlier: a few of the pitchers in the pen shouldn’t be there and that they were suited for “garbage time”. Ouch.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I will try not to complain about the 7 8 9 hitters.

    • MannyGeee

not in this blog… we’ll be too busy bitching about the 1,3,4,5 & 6 hitter to hear anything about 7-9

  • tom

Is it just me, or does anyone else, when they hear the game is on “My9″, prepare themselves for at least an hour of King of Queens first?

    • Epy0n

hahaah I think tonight is that night.

    • #24!!!!

Gonna be Everybody Lovs Raymond tonight. Mixing it up.

      • #24!!!!

        *Loves

    • Mike HC

      hahah

  • Robert

So Posada is playing first in case Cervelli goes down, right? That way they don’t lose the DH. Then Swisher comes in and plays first.

    • Mike HC

Nice observation. I think that sounds right. And can also double as a half rest for Tex, so why not

  • Oh boy

Since its raining, what do you guys think of Paulie in the booth? Did anyone catch Kay talking about O’Neil’s phone last night? He said “Most people shave with the razor, not Paul, he calls people”. I though it was funny as hell since O’Neil is the guy who “doesn’t know how to turn a computer on”
Since i got on this subject, how would you guys rate this year’s booth?
I personally like Kenny more and more and Cone is pretty cool in there too. Al is also good I think, all business most of the time.
    Who is your favorite tandem?
    Kay/Kenny is classic
    Flash is boring
Al Liter and Cone any time
    Paulie is ok
Bob was pretty awful on the west coast trip, i think it was Flash and Lorenz for a series, jeez that killed…

    • first time lawng time

      Better than last year.

      I like Kay.

      Kenny’s cool.

      Love Paulie

      Love Leiter

      Love Cone

      Hate HATE HATE HATE Flash

Best trio is Kay, Paulie, Leiter. However, I also enjoy Cone and Singleton.

      Paulie is the best, though.

    • Mike HC

Big fan of Paul and Cone. Of course, two of the worst broadcasting voices known to man. And Singleton is also a favorite of mine with a good voice.

Kay annoys me, but I work hard to look past that and enjoy what he does do well, which is to get good information and reactions out of his color guys. He also does have a personality, which I guess is better than a drying paint type of guy.

Leiter bores me, and Flash really bores me.

Lorenz is a very solid, if unspectacular, play by play guy. I like him.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

LOVE whenever Cone/Singleton does a game. They are the best “baseball” announcers in the YES booth

Flaherty/Lorenz is brutal. Lorenz is a bad play by play announcer and is brought down by Flaharty who is even worse.

Kay doesn’t bother me except when he gets really excited about a routine fly ball. He and Kenny and Paul in the booth are great.

I think the best booth YES can have is Kenny/Cone/Leiter. Unfortunately Kenny only does play by play on the west coast and there’s never a 3 man booth on the west coast.

    • bonestock94

I like Kay, Cone, and O’Neill a lot.

  • first time lawng time

Any word on when the game should begin?

  • Jose the Satirist

Mike, should readers be concerned that you have Ben and Joe locked up in your basement? You have to get to page 3 before you get to a post not made by you. Let them out!

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

I live up in New Fairfield, CT. Usually the weather here is the same as the city. It’s almost sunny! Either this bodes well for the Bronx, or poorly for myself.

  • first time lawng time

Montero should get called up now. Really. I don’t see what everyone is waiting for.

    • cashman failed

      cashman failed

  • Guest

    Is Betances pitching tonight?

  • Mark Teixeira

Do not forget to vote for Mark Teixeira on the All-Star Ballot, he fell behind Adrian Gonzalez today. You can vote up to 25 times per email!!

    • Thomas Cassidy

No thanks, I’d rather watch A-Gon. Much better chance helping the AL win instead of Mark Giambi.

      • http://twitter.com/karcotte karcotte

Jason Giambi was really fucking good. Your insult makes no sense.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

So Crawford got a standing ovation in Tampa. At least Rays fans have more class than Red Sox fans.

    • CP

Maybe the ovation was for convincing the Red Sox to give him a contract that could drag down the team in a few years – thus making it easier for the Rays to win.

Or it could be that there are more Red Sox fans than Rays fans at the game.

      • CC’s third leg

Its just downright disgusting seeing such a solid franchise have such a small fanbase. We should destroy every college football stadium in florida

    • Oh boy

maybe they were all RS fans standing

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

No. The cameras showed the crowd and many of the Rays fans were standing up and clapping. Most of the Sox fans shown didn’t even move.

        • MannyGeee

they dont know any different. thety never go to Rays games, they mighta thought Crawford still played in Tampa

how have Texas’ pitchers allowed the most HRs of all AL pitching staffs playing most of their games in the al west? that’s amazing.

  • cashman failed

where is montero? why is cervelli catching everyday? i know why… cuz cashman failed.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

      This will end badly.

      • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Matt Imbrogno

You missed my (brief and tame) Chief Wahoo hate last night. I was saddened.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

I’ve let you down in your moment of need. I apologize.

I agree, Chief Wahoo is an abomination of a dark era in American history. Most of the rest of the world has moved on. Cleveland needs to do the same.

          • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Matt Imbrogno

Yeah, I was disappointed they used the Wahoo hat yesterday after going with the “C” hats and helmets in the other games.

            • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Yeah, I was disappointed they used the Wahoo hat yesterday after going with the “C” hats and helmets in the other games segregation was finally legally outlawed in 1964 following passage of the Civil Rights Act.

              Fixed.

              • first time lawng time

I am 100% against the Wahoo hats and discrimination and all that, but I don’t really see how it’s segregation. I mean it’s obviously in bad taste and should be eliminated completely and theyvshouls rename the team, but segregation is not the right word IMO.

                • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

It’s not segregation at all, I was just pointing out that almost 50 years after the legal end of the separation of racial groups in this country Cleveland still sports a horribly racist mascot.

They’re not directly related, but it’s a commentary on how anachronistic such a bigoted caricature is in today’s more pluralistic society.

                  • first time lawng time

                    Okay. I agree.

                  • DCBX

They could at least change to a kachina doll or something if they aren’t going to rename the team. :)

Of course, IDGAF about PC at all and can’t be bothered to lie about it. I’m a black man from the BX and I’d probably go to MORE games if they were the Bronx Brothas and had a watermelon slice logo.

          • MannyGeee

Cleveland still thinks Gerald Ford is in office. don’t sit here and expect anything progressive from them

      • cashman failed

this season will end badly, as in no playoffs. then we can all look back at this time when cashman chose cervelli over montero.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

          Oaktag this foolishness.

        • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

If the Yankees don’t make the playoffs (and I’m at least 90% sure that they will make the playoffs) it won’t be because they didn’t call up Montero to play instead of Cervelli in June.

          • cashman failed

keep saying that, i’m sure it makes you feel better.

            • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

              • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

                • first time lawng time

Actually, all of the players look nice in suits (if the suits are good, that is). Remember when they went to the White House? Cano in that suit.,,so good.
                  Teixeira, though…throw up. EWWWWWWW

Selig should make a rule that requires the Yankees to wear suits when they play.

    • MannyGeee

this has been floating out there for a little bit (read: 2 days)… but with a bat like Montero’s you would think it would be of more value to see how it traslates to the bigs as opposed to and extra season of control.

He swung at several pitches out of the zone and fouled off some very hittable pitches.

        • first time lawng time

          He gets a pass, though.

        • Kevin

He defended the plate and the last 4 pitches he fouled off could have very well been called as strike three. I agree that he did not start at well with the first two in the middle of the plate, but he bounced back.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

      And he comes through! Nice

  • http://deleted Total Dominication

The greatest value we ever got from Eduardo Nuñez, is saving Jesus Montero.

    • TheLastClown

      Cervelli w/ a clutch one-out-only K

    Look at Eduardo.

  • Greg

    There you go.

    #BetterThanJeter?

  • Sheepmeister

lets see if Cervelli can hit his second grand slam off the rangers this year.

  • http://deleted Total Dominication

    Yay!

  • Pastadivingnunez

    Nuney !!!!! As joey says

  • Jetrer

    Jeter would have GIDP

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Yay Nunez. He knew Cervelli was next

  • King George

    Yeah, Pena would GIDP there.

  • King George

I am so stoked that Nunez is doing better this year overall. Defense is a little suspect, but he’s not a bad replacement. Now, Cervelli, on the other hand…

  • http://www.CarlsYankeeDugout.com Carl

Nice picee of hitting, Nunez. Will need more of that from you for the next several days.

  • Nefarious

I think Cervelli should bunt in this situation

  • Pastadivingnunez

        Kei Fucking Igawa?????

      • Jetrer

nah, at least Wilson could hit Pedro. Thats worth something, unlike Cervelli.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Steve Sax? There was a lot of unsolved murders in New York City while he was here, after all.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Montero could have done that.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Cervelli is garbage

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Hurry back, Russell.

  • NHYankeesFan

That could have been Montero right there

  • Greg

Given the circumstances, we would take one run here.

This is a place where Gardner needs to step up.

  • King George

    Hahahahaha, Cervelli.

  • Jetrer

Is Montero really that terrible defensively, or is Cashman just a complete moron?

  • Pastadivingnunez

This ass needs to stop throwing at us

    • MannyGeee

yeah, he’s just wild. no intent I dont think

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Gardner planned that.

    • Jetrer

Gritty players do that kind of thing.

  • King George

Anybody have the stats on Cervelli’s last 7-10 games??

    • MannyGeee

do yu really have to put a number behind “shitty”?

    • Jetrer

      last 7 days – .235/.278/.294, .259 wOBA, 56 wRC+

His BABIP this year was .210 coming into today. He still has good peripherals and a lucky BABIP doesn’t mean you’re “due” for a correction, but he’s not Roy Halladay and this isn’t completely unexpected.

      • http://deleted Total Dominication

        Surely you jest!

    • David N

Don’t worry, after tonight you won’t have to worry about that.

  • CBean

  • David N

Alexi Ogando, we hardly knew ye…

  • Guy Montag

What an inning. And tomorrow we get Holland, another guy we crush. I feel even better now about winning the first two.

  • Karl Krawfid

Life with out Jeter is pretty good on the offense side of things.

    Speed baby!

  • MannyGeee

    wow…. 1.2 IP, 6ER. No Buenos Dias.

I kinda hope we get a shot at the Rangers in the ALCS again. that would be a different game.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

The way the Rangers are playing, they’ll get into the playoffs only because they’re competition is the A’s Angles and Mariners.

      • MannyGeee

if their bats get hot though… yikes. it will be a slugfest every night.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Imagine this week if Posada could catch a few games on the road our line up would be stronger

    • MannyGeee

this is like… the exact opposite of what they told Posada from the onset of the offseason. Cashman told Posada he will be a DH in 2011.

      • Pastadivignunez

Threw him under the bus and backedbup over him. But should posada have prepared his body to catch if nreeded? Should girardi have said something?

In relation to that decision for Cervelli to pick up the ball there rather than letting it roll foul, does anyone have a link to a run expectancy matrix which shows the probability of scoring a run, two runs, or three runs (etc.) rather than just giving you the average number of runs scored in that situation.

          • sangreal

            Right above Girardi

            • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Yeah, Girardi and Cashman should each be on that list like 7 times a piece.

          • MannyGeee

            Javy?

Instead of ARod, we should start calling him LexGuez.

  • Karl Krawfid

CC needs to chill throwing all these fastballs man.

CC, pull your motherfucking head out.

while this thing has slowed to a crawl, fantasy help time:

with Harang on the DL, got a choice of Marquis or Maholm as FA pitchers in my league. thoughts? leaning towards Maholm.

It’s even more upsetting when CC pulls an AJ (especially when AJ didn’t)

  • Foghorn Leghorn

Big game Hamie shuts out the Sox…damn!

      It is cold today.

  • Monteroisdinero

If this was Nova in the 5th……but it’s CC.

  • Esteban

I’m late, did the guy that said the Yankees have the worst corner OFers in baseball show up in the thread tonight?

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

No, but a good-fielding Jason Giambi is now somehow a bad thing.

      • Esteban

        .260/.404/.521 143 OPS+ in 7 season?

        Cashman failed.

        • Greg

You know we could have had David Ortiz instead of Giambi and maybe 2004 never happens. Just speculation though

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Mo could have saved Game 4 or Game 5 and maybe 2004 never happens.

            Hey, you brought it up.

            • Greg

              Absolutely.

            • Pat D

Tony Clark’s double doesn’t bounce over the 2 foot wall in right field…

          • MannyGeee

yeah that would have never happened under Steinbrenners watch. Ortiz was a waiver pick up that the Twins cut, Giambi was the reigning MVP. who would you have taken?

            • Jetrer

heard Steinbrenner wanted Ortiz, but was talked out of it because the Yankees already had a first baseman who could not field

              • FIPster Doofus

I heard the same re: Steinbrenner.

            • Esteban

ALL OF THEM. Put them in the minors if you have to.

          • Esteban

Sure. And if an asteroid hadn’t hit the earth 65 million years ago, we might all be reptilians.

          • Jetrer

Ortiz wasn’t a free agent until the year after Giambi, so it wasn’t a choice.

            • Greg

              That would prevent things.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Without Giambi there’s no Aaron Boone. How quickly everyone forgets that Giambi took Pedro deep twice that game.

            • Greg

Oritz also homered in that game. But you’re right

              • Greg

                sorry Ortiz

              • Esteban

haha. David O’Ritz, David Ortiz’s Irish cousin.

    • MannyGeee

depends, he the same guy that said Teix is a better fielding version of Giambi (and meant it as an insult)?

      if so then yes.

    • MannyGeee

my bad. I keep forgetting he is no longer the CF. but Bay is pretty shitty. Shitty enough to make it a strong arguement

No kidding. Consider Jason Bay and his awful contract Omar Minaya’s parting gift to the Mets.

          • Esteban

Magglio Ordonez and Ryan Rayburn. Combined -1.3 fWar. That’s my best guess.

      • Jetrer

How about Red Sux? Crawford and Drew both 0.1 fWAR. Gardner 1.9, Swisher 0.6.

Memo to Texas: The Yankees prefer a 7-run lead. If you’re going to keep scoring, they’re going to keep scoring.

  • Esteban

Forget about SSS and correlation issues, and the erroneousness of it

LOOK: Jeter misses the game and the Yankees score 11 runs. FACT, Jeter is preventing the Yankees from scoring 11 runs every game.

    • Guy Montag

Per Baseball tonight Jeter leads the league in HAR, Heart Above Replacement and the Yankees are gonna seriously miss him over the next 2 weeks.

      • Foghorn Leghorn

  • King George

    Just a thought…

If you’re Girardi, do you leave CC in the game and let him go 7 or 8 and try to iron out his kinks knowing the game is over or do you save CC’s arm for his next start? I definitely could see both ways, and personally, I’d leave CC in. The guy can surely do more inning eating and it could help hi for his next start.

    • Foghorn Leghorn

i say bring in whelan and get him some work.

    • mbonzo

Send him out there again and see if he has a 1,2,3 inning. If he gets in trouble bring in one of the scrubs.

    • Esteban

I’d give him this inning. He’s at 93 pitches now. Probably ends up at around 105-110 after this inning. No reason to push him past that.

    • MannyGeee

whats the pitch count? over 90 = pull him. under 90, give him another inning.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Save CC’s arm? He’s CC Sabathia. He could pitch 130 pitches if Girardi wanted him to (which he almost never does.)

    • Jetrer

he’s at 93 pitches now, so probably just one more inning unless he has a very quick 7th. No need to push him past 110ish.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Not until at least a little while after he gets 3,000.

    • Esteban

I agree, and I think Gardner’s a better hitter at this point, but it’s one game, and I don’t think the Yankees will move Jeter down before he gets 3,000. Next two weeks should be interesting.

  • swishers fauxhawk

    Montero could have done that

      He deserves it.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

        obviously

      • first time lawng time

        But he’s ugly.

Not that Tex is that cute, but he’s better than Agon.

  • Greg

I think that they want to use him as a trade chip and that if he gets called up and fails then he wont be as attractive to other GMs. Kind of like Fernando Martinez with the Mets.

    • Jetrer

not necessarily though, Mariners wanted Smoak over Montero last year even though Smoak failed when Texas called him up before the trade.

      • JohnnyC

If Cashman is trying to hide something (and it’s even money whether he’s trading Montero anyway), it’s Montero’s defensive deficiencies not his bat (which everyone believes is bonafide).

        • Jetrer

yeah, but I don’t think that is a secret. The Yankees seem to be the only one’s who think Montero can stay at catcher. Leaving him down to play Cervelli just makes it seem like even the Yankees don’t think he can catch.

    • Esteban

LOL, c’mon, when will you accept that he’s a pretty good player.

      • Greg

when he hits about .290-.300 for a season because he has that potential. Al said it tonight, if he could just consistently slap that ball around his speed will help him.

        • Esteban

Even if he hits .270-.280, he provides a ton of value with his on base skills and even more with his defense.

          • Greg

And he needs to improve his basestealing skills.

  • nsalem

Eat the feces Gardner attack dogs

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I was told Andruw Jones only struck out look and popped out.

  • FIPster Doofus

Gardner is inching closer to last season’s .358 wOBA. Not bad for a “fourth outfielder.”

    • Greg

      Consistency is the key.

      • nsalem

He has been consistent for the last two years just as you look consistently foolish moaning and roaning about him every time he has a couple of bad games. Very shallow of you.

    • Cy Pettitte

Gardner gets so much irrational hate, especially on Francesa. I don’t understand it. His game isn’t perfect but he’s still valuable to this team.

      • nsalem

He gets plenty of hate here after he has a couple of bad offensive performances. Yes, he should be a better baserunner and he should have better bunting skills. His positives though far outweigh his negatives. Those who call him a fourth outfielder every time his average dips under .250 are just plain ignorant and have no clue what they are talking about. They don’t understand the importance of having a centerfield talent in left (especially in Yankee stadium)
and they are just plain silly calling his ability to be patient a lack of aggressiveness. Hitters who can consistently have 5 and 6 pitch ABs are going to get caught looking. It goes with the territory. The bottom line is OBP not his K’s

  • Cy Pettitte

    Y U NO Kevin Whelan? that’s why I kept watching….

Texas pride, what other state used to be its own country?

      • Greg

        Hawaii, I think

        • mbonzo

Correct, the only other state to be recognized as a country.

      • http://deleted Total Dominication

All of the 13 colonies essentially. They were all independent of eachother.

        • mbonzo

No one recognized them except for France, who just did it to be dicks.

          • http://deleted Total Dominication

The point was how they viewed themselves though.

            • mbonzo

              What do you mean?

              • http://deleted Total Dominication

Talking about Texas pride is because texans thought of themselves as Texans in their own right. The original 13 clearly thought of themselves as distinct countries.

                • Matt

I think you are misusing the idea of states’ rights here.

There is a difference between being an independent country and wishing to preserve one’s autonomy within a union of states or territories.

The reason the Articles of Confederation failed were that the states did eventually need to request the help of the central government, which was essentially powerless to provide assistance since the states had too much of the authority.

Even though they had different currencies and governing bodies, these states were not hoping to be independent countries, but rather to stay affiliated in the event of a potential future need to repel a foreign power.

                  • http://deleted Total Dominication

I still think that during the articles they were pretty much closely allied nation-states, a la the EU.

                    • mbonzo

They were a confederation, but just slightly before the revolutionary war there was a period where they claimed to be independent but not a confederacy. From what I remember, no one recognized them as independent states during this time except for France which is not enough to be considered countries. The only states to be recognized as a country were Texas and Hawaii. California and Vermont spent time as Republics, but they weren’t recognized as countries.

        • Matt

They were never independent countries. Before the Revolutionary War, they were British Colonies, and the Articles of Confederation were adopted before the war ended, which unified them under a central government (albeit a weak one).

  • Cy Pettitte

Lance has no place on this team if he’s gonna walk 2 in an inning with an 8 run lead.
