Doubleheaders are always fun, at least in theory. The first game is never a problem, it’s the second game when we all start to get a little grumpy and ready to move on with our lives. Thankfully we don’t have to worry about that just yet, since the Yankees are Reds are about to kick off game one of today’s double dip. Here’s the lineup…

Brett Gardner, LF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Nick Swisher, RF
Robinson Cano, 2B
Jorge Posada, 1B
Eduardo Nunez, SS
Ramiro Pena, 3B
Frankie Cervelli, C
Freddy Garcia, SP

First pitch scheduled for 12:35pm ET and this game can be seen on YES and heard on WCBS 880. Enjoy.

NL lineup for some old timey NL ball.

    • Robert

      It’s a National League lineup.

      • Adam B

this is one of the worst lineups I have ever seen the yankees roll out (garbage gamesin September don’t count)… granted I’m only 23…

  • MannyGeee

    Fantasy question:

Play Russell Martin in game 2 or Joe Mauer (@ SF, Vogelsong) in fantasy today? Mauer had a great game last night, but not completely sold he is healthy and his timing is there yet.

    • Nick

      Mauer

    • boogie down

That’s tough, b/c Cueto and Vogelsong have both been pitching really well. Vogelsong has done especially well at home, though, which complicates matters even further.

I’d go with Mauer; although Martin is 5-17 over the last week, he’s not nearly the player that Mauer is and, in general, he’s been on a slide since the beginning of May. Obviously, Mauer’s output last night should instill some confidence. Hope that Vogelsong’s bubble bursts a bit tonight.

  • duzzi23

Girardis really trotting out the A lineup for this game huh? Swisher third really? Dunno why everyone needs to be rested when they didn’t play yesterday n won’t tomorrow

    • Pat D

They might not be able to get both in today, according to what Jack Curry just said…

      • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

All the more reason to send out the A lineup.

  • Greg

According to info yeaterday, Girardi is going to play Martin and Arod in the night game.

    • MannyGeee

I think I woulda sent the big guns out against Cuento today instead of Leake tonight, FWIW

      • MannyGeee

my bad Leake gets the day game and Cuento gets the nightcap.

        I am OK with this.

  • Jeremy

    What’s wrong with Tex & a-rod?

    • Greg

      Just rest I think.

      Q: What’s wrong with Tex & a-rod?

      A: They’re baseball players.

      • Pat D

But baseball should be played by athletes. If they are not athletic enough to play 2 games, they don’t deserve the money they are making for playing a SPORT (by athletes).

Does he really, really have to be that intense?

        • Greg

One could ask the same thing about the Phanatic or Mr. Met.

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

            The Phanatic, maybe.

Mr. Met doesn’t have the dazed, bloodshot eyes of a serial killer in the midst of a dissociative fugue. OR WIELD A MASSIVE BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA MURDER WEAPON.

Mr. Met is just as benign and harmless as the team he represents.

            • Greg

That’s what gets you. He looks benign and harmelss but he can take you down with his ball head and big gloves.

            • Pat D

With that ‘stache, it’s pretty obvious that he’s a commie.

              • MannyGeee

I was going with pedophile, but commie works too

                • Pat D

Which makes your comment quite prescient.

  • Monteroisdinero

Swish can bat anywhere in the lineup and plays everyday. He rocks.

I hope this isn’t sarcasm and you’re actually starting to come around and be more reasonable.

  • Thomas

I saw Mrs. and Mr. Redlegs in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and the baby looked at me.

  • Monteroisdinero

Any reason why we can’t have the opposing lineup posted as well?

  • Greg

Come to think of it, most of the good mascots are in the National League: The Phanatic, Mr. Met, Bernie Brewer, the Friar, Mr Redlegs, the Parrot, formerly the San Diego Chicken and Chief Nocahoma

        :: head explodes ::

      • Greg

What team was that for? If it’s minor league, it doesnt count.

        • Nigel Incubator-Jones

          San Francisco Giants.

He was the most hated mascot ever, fans would throw thing at him. I think it only lasted for a year or so back in the 80’s.

          • Nigel Incubator-Jones
            • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

As opposed to other mascots, Crazy Crab was meant as an “anti-mascot”, satirizing on the mascot craze that was going on at the time. Fans were encouraged to boo the mascot (played by actor Wayne Doba) and manager Frank Robinson appeared in a commercial with the crustacean where Robinson was restrained from attacking him. This encouragement may have worked too well, as Giants fans regularly threw various dangerous objects at Crazy Crab, including beer bottles and batteries, and Crazy Crab’s suit had to be reinforced with a fiberglass shell for protection. The crab was so hated, players on both the Giants and even the opposition would throw rosin bags and other objects at the mascot. Doba sued the San Diego Padres after two of their players tackled him, causing injuries.

Hilarious. The best laid plans of mice and men.

              • Nigel Incubator-Jones

I will neither confirm nor deny that I ever threw anything at Crazy Crab.

      • Pat D

        What the fuck is that?

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

It’s the mascot for the Red Sox SS Penn League team, the “Lowell STDs”.

  • http://kierstenschmidt.com Kiersten

  • Rob

I wonder if pena and nunez can combine for a better defensive play (or non play) than they had on sunday in wrigley?

    • MannyGeee

with Jorge playing 1st & Penunez flinging balls around like Ridalin kids, there will be MANY opportunities for overthows and bouncebys.

glad I am listening to the game instead of watching. oh wait.

  • Joseph Cecala

I think this is the worst possible lineup Girardi could have ever made. Then again 7 runs

    • Thomas

He still could have put in Dickerson and Jones for Granderson and Gardner.

      • MannyGeee

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. dont give Girardi any ideas, he hasn’t turned in the line up card for 7pm yet

  • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

I had no idea until the other day that “The Great American Ballpark” isn’t the default name of Cincinnati’s stadium, it’s actually a naming rights deal with the Great American Insurance Company.

Seems like a waste to me. If I can’t tell that the stadium refers to your company name and get obvious, instant brand tie-in, you’re not getting much bang for your endorsement buck.

    • sangreal

True, but as Michael Kay pointed out — its a great name for the park

      • sangreal

Also, the people in the area (Where Great American actually conducts business) would know. If not, there is always the giant Great American Headquarters behind the stadium

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Yeah, but that only helps you in Cincinnati. I’m sure some national company would pay a bit more for the nationwide broadcast benefits a baseball game has.

Why not Allstate Park or something?

          • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

            President Palmer takes offense

    • Pat D

Well, they’re Great American, so they obviously feel pretty secure. People trust a name like “Great American.”

    • Thomas

Actually CitiField is probably one of the best ballpark names, where the naming rights were sold. When you say it, it is the same as City Field, which sounds like any ballpark where the naming rights are not sold. However, since it is spelled Citi, you know it is for CitiBank.

I think it works on both levels of selling out and not sounding like you did (unlike say AT&T park), which is good and one of the few Mets accomplishments.

      • pat

I like it because you can call it Shiti Field.

  • the tenth inning stretch

    Perfect hit-and-run.

  • The Oberamtmann

This is why I like Michael Kay and the rest of the Yankee announcers. I’m watching the game with the Reds broadcast on – I’m watching on MLB.tv and the supposed game-sounds only option is nowhere to be seen – and they have spent the entire inning talking to some overly-giddy woman talking about a duck ride in some newly reestablished neighborhood. At least half the time the camera is on them and not on the field. When Granderson got the hit the announcer already said (after mentioning the hit) “enough of that” and returned to talking to her. The Yankees don’t do this that much, and when they do have guests for a charity or whatnot, it doesn’t take this long.

    • The Oberamtmann

Now they’re talking about butterfly populations.

    • JZ

Were you watching the Michael Miklen interview on Sunday? I wanted to kill the lot of them, the thing droned on so long. An entire half-inning of blather.

Yup. It would’ve been a tough play (the 3-6-3 always is) but it’s a higher percentage play than trying to touch the bag and nail Gardner at the plate.

He’ll probably be called up next year.

But it’s…it’s easy … to, to talk about… It’s easy to sum it up when you’re just talking about the backup catcher. We’re sitting in here, and I’m supposed to be the GM, and we in here talking about the backup catcher. I mean, listen, we’re talking about the backup catcher, not the starter, not the starter, not the starter; we talking about the backup catcher. Not the starter. Not, not … Not the starting catcher that goes out there and dies for us and plays every game for us like it’s his last. Not the starter, but we’re talking about the backup catcher, man. I mean, how silly is that?

And we talking about the backup catcher. I know I’m supposed to work on the whole roster. I know Jesus needs to be promoted soon. I know that… And I’m not.. I’m not shoving it aside, you know, like it don’t mean anything. I know it’s important, I do. I honestly do…

But we’re talking about the backup catcher man. What are we talking about? The backup catcher? We’re talking about the backup catcher, man. (laughter from the media crowd) We’re talking about the backup catcher. We’re talking about the backup catcher. We aint talking about the starter. (more laughter) We’re talking about the backup catcher, man. When you come to the ballpark, and you see Martin play, you see Martin play, don’t you? You’ve seen Martin give everything he’s got, right? But we’re talking about the backup catcher right now. We taking about the backup catcher.

That IF is a conditional, it’s not a fact. Garcia is a bad pitcher if he can’t locate well, yes, but Garcia often DOES actually locate well, making him not a bad pitcher.

This is where as a pitcher you want to scream. Made the pitches necessary – that should have been the end of the inning – but sloppy play screws you out of an additional 10+ pitches and possibly giving up the lead.

“I shouldn’t say this publicly,” Showalter was quoted as saying in the magazine story, “but a guy like Ken Griffey Jr., the game’s boring to him. He comes on the field, and his hat’s on backward, and his shirttail’s hanging out.”

He also made pointed comments about San Francisco’s Barry Bonds, saying that at last year’s All-Star Game Bonds failed to tuck in his shirt until game time.

“To me, that’s a lack of respect for the game,” Showalter said. “Maybe I’m being too picky on these guys. I’m starting to say things like, ‘Back when I played.’ I thought I’d never say those words.”

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Seems like a logical way of thinking about it, though. Having an extra insurance run would certainly make you more comfortable pushing Garcia closer to (or past) his effectiveness limit.

The beauty of Pena’s play today – 3 error – hat trick – and hbp. All in all, great game.

Agreed with all the comments saying that Garcia should get the 8th.

Something tells me we’re gonna need Robertson tonight, with Gordon starting.

  • Greg

Its the same with the Baltimore game. If we were ahead by 3 or 4 runs instead of just one, Joe keeps Colon in.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What the hell, why is Robertson coming in?

  • Cy Pettitte

    Nunez you moron.

  • Karl Krawfid

    I cry :(

  • Greg

    And then he does that

  • pat

    Lol Nunez. I love it.

  • Ivan

    Ugh….

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Our obligatory baserunning mistake of the day…

  • lily

of course he gets picked off

  • Yank The Frank

    Gotta go to MO.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Finish them Mariano

  • tom

No Yankee game is complete without something bonehead on the bases.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Nuñez and Peña are worth the price of admission.

      • Mister Delaware

        I wish you’d written “admissioñ”.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

          I regret the oversight.

  • first time lawng time

Lol Nuñez channeling his inner Posada.

  • jdp

Nunez and Pena are making Jeter look better every day.

  • Kostas

Clearly Girardi does not know how to manage. A lefty batter and Boone Logan is not in. Failure.

    • King George

      Duh.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Anyone here ever been to Great American Ballpark?

It looks pretty freaking nice on TV

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Mariano just made Jay Bruce look silly.

  • swishers fauxhawk

    Jay Bruce is now #aware.

  • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

    YAY RAMIRO

  • the tenth inning stretch

    Pena!

  • Greg

    There we go Pena

  • jon

    that a boy

  • MikeD

WTF Pena made three errors today? What’s going on out there.

  • Karl Krawfid

Pena says, I make em when they count.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

He’s playing defense to the score.

      • Pat D

        I laughed.

      • Mister Delaware

I did too. I like baseball humor.

  • Yank The Frank

Ramiro made up some on that one.

  • Jetrer

    Pena just doesn’t like Freddy

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Who are you and what have you done with Ramiro Pena?

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Nice pick, better throw.

Slinging that bad boy across the diamond off your back foot is waayyy harder than it looks.

  • tom

    All is forgiven, Ramiro.

    Signed, Ridiculously Fickle Fan

  • King George

    Pena with redemption

  • MannyGeee

Pena is the most confusing baseball player in the league. 3 errors and then follows it up with big time plays.

    • the tenth inning stretch

Is Milton Bradley now out of the league?

  • Pat D

Pena’s defense has proven that You Can’t Predict Baseball.

And congrats to bex and the other gals at YCPB for joining ESPN’s SweetSpot Network!

  • mike_h

    ball game, Yankees WIN!!!!!

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Uhhh I think Cervelli is pumped.

    BALLGAME OVER! YANKEES WIN!

  • Kostas

So with Mo closing does that mean Robertson is the closer for the night game?

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

      Jeff Marquez. He’s ready.

      • Kostas

Damn. I had money on Robertson, his arm falling off, and then a joint effort by Ayala and Logan. Life is unfair.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

      Boone Logan

      Girardi’s binder says it’s worth a shot

  • Ivan

    Nice!!!!

  • Hall and Nokes

Cervelli is still our best fist pumper, no matter what else you think of him (well, besides CC).

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

Joba is gone but not forgotten

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    2-0 with the C lineup.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Nice win. Let’s do it again in a few hours.

  • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

    Brett Gardner has everyday-player sunglasses.

  • MikeD

I only saw the last two innings, but good win. Best news is I can still get my baseball fix for the day with the game tonight.

  • David, Jr.

Don’t know how they managed to win again without their leadoff hitter, Jetes. None of his three-run homers. None of his spectacular fielding plays. Still, they prevailed!

  • first time lawng time

Will Rivera be available for tonight’s game? What about Drob?

    • Pat D

      Questionable on both counts.

To be on the safe side, root for a blowout win.

  • Greg

    Intersting stat from Olney

Combined Garcia and Colon: 157.1 IP, 3.20 ERA

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

      Also:

Combined Garcia and Colon: 2.4M-6M (based on how many games Freddy starts)

      • nsalem

Freddy can’t throw more thn 89mph therefore he is not a real pitcher (like say Kyle Farnsworth).
Definitely a disaster waiting to happen. If Gordon pitches another 5 innings tonight and allows 9 baserunners and only 2 runs Freddy should go to the bullpen.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Turned out to be great signings by Cashman.

      • first time lawng time

        So far.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Nope. They’re already good, no matter what happens from here on out. Cashman spent less than 5M to get 22 starts of 3.20 ERA from April to the present.

Even if both Colon and Garcia die tomorrow (or worse, live and pitch to 10.00+ ERAs in the second half), 157.1 IP of 3.20 ERA ball (spread across two men) for less than the cost of one single Jon Garland or Aaron Harang is an unqualified success.

        • nsalem

Your intelligence and objectiveness are truly amazing.

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

But she’s first in her class!

            • nsalem

Oh man you left my some great openings but I shall refrain. Thanks anyway.

        • pat

          No. Great signings period.

    • DCBX

      Brought to you by Geritol!
