Game 77: Could of had

By

There was a point in time this winter when the Yankees could have of had Zack Greinke, or at least it appeared that way. The righty met with Brian Cashman during the winter meetings to try to convince him he wanted to be a Yankee, but the GM voted against it and off to Milwaukee he went. Now they’ve got Freddy Garcia instead, who will face Greinke tonight. Sweaty Freddy has gotten the job done at a low cost, but he certainly doesn’t strike fear in opponents. It’ll be a while before we know if passing on the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner was a smart move, but what’s done is done. Here’s the starting nine…

Brett Gardner, LF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, SS

Freddy Garcia, SP

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally or MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

  1. King George says:

You had it right the first time, Mike. “Could have had” Yes, I had to be that guy…

  2. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

[insert comment about how Grenkie can't handle NY here]

  3. Pat D says:

OMG, Mike. You didn’t make the couldn’t handle New York joke.

And you had to say “could of had.”

As Blue Laser Commander would say, “I just hate you so much!!”

  4. Jimmy McNulty says:

Is it too pessimistic to say that Fielder will go deep at least once in this series? Dude’s got some serious stroke.

  5. Zack D says:

Can’t wait for the overreacting from both sides to occur on an AB-by-AB basis over the next few hours

  6. Official Member of the Bartolo Colon Fan Club says:

    could have had

  7. Ted Nelson says:

*Could of/have had Greinke and not had Jesus, Manny/Dellin, etc.

The Brewers got a recent #12 BA prospect at a premium position, the BA #69 prospect in starting P Jacob Odorizzi, a strong relief prospect in Jeffress, and a solid young corner OF in Cain from the Brewers.

    • Jimmy McNulty says:

They also got one of the few short stops that can’t out hit Eduardo Nuñez. C’mon Ted, last night you were bashing all of BA’s analysis on draft prospects and now you cite one their rankings (that was clearly overly optimistic) in favor your argument? You’re better than that.

  8. Zack D says:

Man I wish Girardi would talk about Arod/Tex moving to the OF for a game, just to see the backlash.

  9. Jimmy McNulty says:

I was talking to my idiot friend Matt about the ASG, and I’m convinced that Mark Teixeira is a better player than Adrian Gonzalez. Mark Teixeira has a .247/358/.538 line good for a .388 wOBA, yet a .228 BABIP. Adrian Gonzalez has a line of .361/.415/.611 good for a .438 wOBA yet a wopping .397 BABIP. I know Teixeira is a heavy pull hitter that gets an enormous shift played against him, but that doesn’t explain the staggering difference in BABIP. Career they’re .298 and .318 respectively, the main difference is that Gonzalez is just murdering RHP. I’d suspect by the end of the year that they’ll have awfully similar lines.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

      Marco Scutaro, Red Sox: 1,099,744

That should tell you everything you need to know about most of the All star fan voters.

      • Pat D says:

And Mitch Moreland is ahead of Paul Konerko.

      • Jimmy McNulty says:

Meh. It’s an exhibition game, let the fans vote in the players they want to see play. I think they should do a Sophomore game or something to help showcase the younger players in the league on a national stage.

        • Pat D says:

          Like the NBA?

You can have something like that or you can have the Futures Game.

          • Jimmy McNulty says:

Why not both? Or like a prospects v. rookies/sophomores game.

            • Pat D says:

Why not both? Because they also bother with the Celebrity Game and the Home Run Waste of Time, so where are they fitting this in?

They also probably don’t want to use ML pitchers in another exhibition game on Monday. It’ll be the same thing as when they don’t let guys who pitch Sunday then pitch in the ASG.

  10. Jon says:

Greinke is a solid pitcher and the Yanks should have gone after him.

  11. Greg says:

I heard Matt Garza as a possible trade target. Any thoughts?

    • Pat D says:

I’ve said before that his power comes from his chin pubes, and he wouldn’t be able to have them with the Yankees, so pass.

He’s also already been proven to be a lousy teammate.

    • Yanks27rings says:

Should of traded for Garza. Who needs Montero when you can get a guy who threw a no-hitter?!

      /kidding, of course

  12. IRF says:

John Flaherty is the only human being on earth who could take the funny out of Bob Uecker.

    Well, him and Principal Skinner.

  13. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I wonder if Flaharty would still be in the YES booth if he didn’t hit that walkoff vs Boston in 2004.

    • Pat D says:

The newspapers like him and they “stole” him away from the Mets.

I think the latter point has more to do with it.

  14. Cy Pettitte says:

Prince is so hungry he’s trying to eat his own facial hair

  15. Esteban says:

I hope to see some craziness from Nyjer Morgan this series. He’s always good for a dose of crazy righteous indignation.

  16. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I don’t think Yankee fans are too excited about seeing Ryan Braun hit against the Yankees, Michael

  17. Dave says:

Doesn’t Greinke have a 4.77 ERA in the NL?

  18. Karl Krawfid says:

    Come on Freddy

  19. Mike Axisa says:

    Casey McGehee is so bad.

  20. Karl Krawfid says:

    Atta boy

  21. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Very nice high five.

  22. Esteban says:

Freddy made us sweaty that inning.

  23. Jerome S. says:

    Greinke: Not handling NY.

  24. Mike Axisa says:

Who’s ready for 5+ innings of Michael Kay psychoanalyzing Zack Greinke?

  25. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Saberetrics denial?

  26. Cy Pettitte says:

    lol Grienke is soooooo unlucky

  27. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Lol Morgan

  28. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NYJER MORGAN

  29. Greg says:

    Nyjer FAIL

  30. Ivan says:

Thanks Mordan, and its not even X-Mas yet.

  31. Jerome S. says:

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why Greinke’s ERA is so pathetic.

  32. IRF says:

    Best. Hit-and-Run. Ever.

  33. #24!!!! says:

So the Brewer’s defense is really crappy!

  34. Esteban says:

    Womp Womp. FAIL

  35. Stratman9652 says:

C’mon Morgan! Throw your glove away and have a hissy fit next time would ya!

  36. Esteban says:

So Greinke couldn’t handle NY after all.

    /The inevitable narrative.

  37. James A says:

Guess Greinke’s luck isn’t turning around today
Btw it will be a beautiful day when an announcer talks about FIP when analyzing someone’s ERA (I know cone did it, I guess when it’s the norm is what I mean)

    • #24!!!! says:

I totally agree. They’re basically saying “Greinke sucks b/c his ERA is high,” meanwhile that’s NOT the case at all

  38. jon says:

    look at greinke implode

    already gave up 2 runs

  39. Esteban says:

Hey, who saw that awful ‘sabremetrics’ ruin sports article on Grantland today?

  40. Mike Axisa says:

Where the fuck was Weeks playing?

  41. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

What kind of shift was that?

  42. Ivan says:

That shift made no sense whats so ever.

  43. James A says:

    Shift fail

  44. Jerome S. says:

    Wow. Just… wow.

I honestly feel bad for Greinke. We should have gone after him, we’d be in the second inning by now.

  45. IRF says:

    Greinke is cursed.

  46. Rob says:

    Awesome shift!

  47. Cy Pettitte says:

    Brewers can’t handle NY

  48. Stratman9652 says:

And I was tempted to use Greinke for pick six. Dodged that bullet.

  49. jon says:

UPDATE, 7:21 p.m.: I’ll say this much for Nyjer Morgan: That ball off Ramiro Pena’s chest followed by the throw into the dirt by Eduardo Nunez is still the worst play I’ve ever seen in professional baseball. Morgan’s stumble might be second, but that Pena/Nunez play was kind of hilarious. Anyway, it’s 2-0 Yankees in the first.

    lol

  50. Jerome S. says:

I could feel Fielder’s vibration from my house. It’s so entertaining to see lumbering man-children play the field.

  51. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    “Red hard”

  52. James A says:

Does it make me a bad person that I kind’ve want to see Cliff Lee no-hit the Red Sox tonight and then hurt himself in the postgame celebration Kendry Morales style?

  53. It'sATarp says:

The Brewers must hate Greinke or something

  54. Dave says:

Greinke doesn’t exactly work quickly, does he? Must be the crazy slowing him down.

  55. Cy Pettitte says:

    lol ARod

    this defense is fucking hilarious

  56. #24!!!! says:

    Wow.

  57. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    more Brewer fail

  58. Esteban says:

LOLOLOLOLOL. No wonder his ERA is so much higher than his peripherals would suggest.

  59. Pat D says:

    McGahee fail.

  60. AndrewYF says:

    Greinke must be soooooo pissed.

  61. Stratman9652 says:

    LMFAO! This game is awesome!

  62. jon says:

    lol god hates greinke

  63. Ivan says:

Thats just a dumb play there. Does he not know that Posada is running?

  64. Xstar7 says:

Now they’re just doing this for the shits and giggles.

  65. IRF says:

When’s the last time anyone’s seen an inning this weird?

  66. Mike Axisa says:

If Greinke murders everyone his team after this game, I wouldn’t blame him.

  67. It'sATarp says:

If I was Greinke i’d go insane too

  68. Monteroisdinero says:

An easy out at first with Jorge running. Brew Crew with big bats but….

  69. e says:

you have got to be kidding me. greinke getting murdered on my fantasy team

  70. Karl Krawfid says:

    Oh my lord why

  71. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    I hate you Feldin Culbreth

  72. Jerome S. says:

    Welp, score early and often…

  73. James A says:

I was hoping that would bounce off Hart’s head Canseco style into the corner

  74. Karl Krawfid says:

    Horrible strike zone man

  75. Greg says:

Not really angry about that. Two out scoring is very difficult.

  76. Jose the Satirist says:

Can someone explain to me why Francona keeps batting McDonald 5th? He has a -25 wRC+. I know it is partly because they don’t have Ortiz in the NL park, but wouldn’t you bat Varitek, Scutaro, or pretty much any living baseball player before batting McDonald 5th?

  77. first time lawng time says:

There’s something about Greinke that I don’t like. He looks very angry all the time (not just talking about the way hr looked this inning). He has very beaty eyes; I could totally see him as being a serial killer.

  78. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Brewers getting hitting lessons from Jeter

  79. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    I really like Yuni’s .262 OBP

  80. James A says:

Does Andruw Jones think he’s spiderman or something?

  81. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Haha Dominic Brown homered off Beckett 2-0 Phils.

  82. James A says:

    E) Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy

  83. IRF says:

Oh my god. Here we go…

  84. Jonathan Harker says:

Just unforced error after unforced error by Greinke. So glad we didn’t try to get this nutcase.

  85. Ivan says:

If Greinke was so intimitated by NY, then why did he go to Cashman to actually pitch here uh?

  86. Monteroisdinero says:

Solid contact by Nunez. me like.

  87. Cy Pettitte says:

    great AB Brett

  88. James A says:

It must be nice to be able to throw a changeup strike and a slider strike the next two pitches after walking a guy

  89. jon says:

    lol nice fake

  90. Esteban says:

WTF, a Brewers player made a decent defensive play?

  91. Jerome S. says:

Can not believe hart made that play the Brewers have a defense.

  92. Esteban says:

    #smallball

  93. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nunie/BG double steal is awesome

  94. Karl Krawfid says:

A-Rod trying to go 8-8 with risp right here.

  95. Jerome S. says:

Nunez would be more usable if he get on base enough to steal. It looks like a good tool of his.

  96. Cy Pettitte says:

I’d love to see the spray chart they’re using for this shift

  97. jon says:

    a little shocked arod didnt swing 3 – 0

  98. James A says:

A-Rod isn’t hitting many homers, but man is he just locked in at the plate right now (although he should be 0-1 with a 4-3 groundout)

  99. Cy Pettitte says:

    RBI for Robbie! nice.

  100. Karl Krawfid says:

    Dis Yankee approach is amazing

  101. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

They needed to put a shift in for Robbie.

  102. Xstar7 says:

    A rbi for Robbie.

  103. wow says:

50 pitches… at this rate Greinke is gonna get a CG.

  104. Esteban says:

Who would be on the all-royalty team?

    Prince Fielder
    Marquis Grissom
    Rey Ordonez
    Duke Snider
    King Felix
    King Kelly
    Ray King
    Mel Queen
    Earl Weaver
    Ray Knight

Who else you got? (There are lots of people with the last name King, I just picked one)

  105. jon says:

YankeesWFAN Was told Colon’s velocity/stamina are excellent, hamstring is probably as healed as it will get. Be surprised if he doesn’t start vs Mets.

  106. Cy Pettitte says:

    Swisherian!

  107. Karl Krawfid says:

    Swish!!!!!

  108. Jerome S. says:

    Feeling bad for Greinke.

  109. Greg says:

    Swisher!

  110. jon says:

cant blame defense on that one

  111. Ivan says:

    Boom!!!!!!!!

    Swish, all net.

  112. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Gernkie can’t handle NY.

  113. Mike Axisa says:

    Swishy Swish Swish.

  114. Esteban says:

Nick Swisher is alive from the left side.

  115. Rob says:

Cashman called, he said to never again question him regarding player evaluations…physical or mental

  116. Jonathan Harker says:

There are just some guys who can’t pitch in this city and Greinke’s one of them.

  117. Kostas says:

Queue the “Greinke can’t handle New York” statement.

    AWESOME!

  118. Ryan says:

    All hail Cashman.

  119. Greg says:

Might seem crazy but we gotta score more. Brewers offense can be deadly.

  120. Jerome S. says:

Posada vs. Prince in a race.

    Who wins.

  121. Pat D says:

Yep, Greinke can’t handle New York.

He does look a bit shell-shocked.

  122. jon says:

Cashman to RAB: “How does my ass taste?”

  123. Zack Grenkie says:

I can’t handle New York. Assholes.

  124. It'sATarp says:

Well this one start proves Greinke does not have what it takes to pitch here…

  125. Jerome S. says:

    Behold, the slaughterhouse.

You know how we feel when we put up CC Sabathia against an unknown pitcher and the Yanks get blown out?

    Well, there ya go.

  126. Dino Velvet says:

    Yanks 10-3 without Jeter

  127. bklyn says:

All kidding aside, grienke really looks intimidated up there.

    • Jonathan Harker says:

He is getting shelled against the best lineup in baseball. Happens to the best of them sometimes.

  128. Monteroisdinero says:

Freddy looking to lower that 3.30 era.

  129. Guest says:

Why not focus on the fact that the Yanks are cranking an elite pitcher rather than focusing on a stupid narrative about Greinke?

Seriously. I’m absolutely pumped that the Yanks are working great at bats and crushing him tonight but I would be ECSTATIC if he were in our rotation.

If you think one bad night against us tonight means that “he can’t handle New York”…well…*sighs in exasperation*

  130. Cy Pettitte says:

too bad Mitre was DFA’d, would have been funny to see him for 4 or 5 innings

  131. first time lawng time says:

If there are news articles saying Greinke can’t handle NY, that’s why he pitched poorly, then, I’m sorry, but that lacks serious critical thinking.

He’s not pitching poorly because he can’t handle NY; he’s pitching poorly because he facing the best offense in the MLB in a hitter friendly stadium. In no way is this indicative of how he would perform if he were a Yankee. Why? Because if he were a Yankee, HE WOULDN’T BE PITCHING AGAINST GRANDERSON, AROD, CANO, ETC. HELLO!!??

Now, one could make the argument that his anxiety would hinder his performance as a Yankee because of the media and attention. That’s legit. But using tonight’s game as a basis for that lacks logic an reasoning.

  132. Greg says:

That is what we call a KO

  133. IRF says:

It would be nice if they could really pile it on and wear out the bullpen.

  134. Guest says:

When was the last time Martin had a hit? The Bush administration?

  135. first time lawng time says:

The Yanks are so good in interleague play because of all of their WS experience and success. Uh duh!

  136. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Stealing in a 7-0 game. Love it.

  137. Xstar7 says:

    Nunez with teh speed

  138. IRF says:

Nunez is really a horrible slider

  139. Cy Pettitte says:

helmet off = safe for Nunez

  140. Dino Velvet says:

    Nunez really wants the job.

  141. James A says:

Nyjer Morgan started that whole brawl with Florida because he stole second and third in an 8 run game

    • Pat D says:

I think that says more about the other team, frankly.

Those “unwritten rules” are convenient to invoke when a player/manager/team has been personally offended by something that happens.

Which means they are complete bullshit.

      • There’s a reason that unwritten rules aren’t written down: If you wrote them down, you’d realize how dumb they were.

        • Xstar7 says:

see: Braden, Dallas (aka Grandma’s boy)

          • first time lawng time says:

Braden is a creep. He acts like he is this big shot, even though he obviously isn’t.

Oooooh Arod just ran across my mound so I’m gonna throw a temper tantrum to get attention ooooh. I’m sooooo tough. And since the media loves to hate Arod I’m going to win. And then I’m gonna go cry to my Grandma because I have no real friends cus I’m kinda ugly and I don’t have that great of a body and my teammates hate me cus I’m a shit pitcher (except for that on time I threw a perfect game on Mother’s Day which was actually legit and I should get credit or that). And then afte I throw my perfct game in going to have my grandma tell Arod to stick it because having old women stick up for me is cool and all and makes me look tough. Oh yeah, I’m also going to be a flake and let my grandma step on the mound, even though I will explicitly say I will never allow such a catastrophe to occur. And then in July I’m going to send Arod a fruit basket because I think I’m funny. And then no one will ever hear of me again because I’m washed up has been (not that I was anything in th first place but still).

And that was Braden’s thought process when Cano hit that fateful foul ball).

It’s funny though, because of Cano didn’t swing the bat, this never would have happened. And that is why he should take balls.

  142. Rob says:

Is nunie’s right arm ok? Looks like he slid on it in a really weird way

  143. Cy Pettitte says:

This Brewers team really can’t get out of their own way

  144. Dino Velvet says:

I bet Greinke in the club house cutting himself.

  145. jon says:

wow i wonder if a yankee is going to get plunked

  146. Hummingbird S. says:

Tex looks like he’s running under water..

  147. Mojo says:

Tex no lika da changeup, ok?

  148. Karl Krawfid says:

Mets vs Yankees is gonna be amped up they way both teams are playing.

  149. Greg says:

THe fact that we stole bases should be taken as a sign of respect for the Breweres offense. “We believe that you can come back from a seven run deficet so we are trying to score more runs”

Another thing. I hate “pitching to the score” Its like playing the prevent defense.

    • Seriously, I never got that. What’s more disrespectful, running up the score, or intentionally trying NOT to score out of pity for the haplessness of your opponent?

Shouldn’t I be more offended that you think so little of me that you’re giving up on playing hard before the game is over, because you doubt my ability to possibly make a comeback?

    • Monteroisdinero says:

Agree. The prevent defense “prevents” you from winning.

    • first time lawng time says:

Pitching to the score is weak.

On my team, my players would score 10+ runs a game, and we wouldn’t have mopup guys come in. My pitchers would deal and go for the no hitter. No mercy. I wouldn’t lift my superstar players for pinch running scrubs. They’d stay in and swing for the fences every time. And then my skinny guys would continue to steal. And then Mo would come in for the 9th every single time. And it would not affect him physically.

      Why? Because he’s a man. That’s why.

  150. jon says:

anyone else watching the game on MLB.TV?

whos brilliant mind decided to put Nair ads on during a baseball game. I cant imagine many women are watching this game on their computers

  151. James A says:

DId Jimmy Rollins have to pay or did he get payed to shut down a street in Philly just so he could have his own personal aluminum bat home run derby?
    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/bl.....lb-wp10860

  152. Monteroisdinero says:

    Fielder’s balk. (not Prince)

    Anyone know the rule?

    • Stratman9652 says:

From what I found a fielder’s balk is when a defensive player is not set up in fair territory as the pitch is delivered.

      • Monteroisdinero says:

I was at my kid’s game and the third baseman was holding a runner on 3rd with one foot in foul territory. Ump called it and the runner scored.

        You were right.

  153. Dino Velvet says:

Clee flirting with a no-no versus bawstn

  154. Cy Pettitte says:

    Freddy is getting mashed

  155. Greg says:

    You’re playing the prevent defense.

  156. first time lawng time says:

The reason Ortiz is so powerful isn’t that he’s on or did steroids–it’s because he’s fat.

If I were in charge of a team, my lineup would alternate between fat and skinny players. (the skinny layers are fast BTW)

  157. Hummingbird S. says:

Freddy’s junk is not fooling anyone

  158. Rob says:

That was a lazy fly ball out of swishers hand

  159. first time lawng time says:

The Robin Lopez look alike was safe.

  160. Stratman9652 says:

Nick Swisher’s “Just cartwheel and chuck it” throws are hilarious.

  161. Mike Myers says:

    BUNT!

  162. Guest says:

    Why over shift against A-Rod?

I know he tends to pull the ball on the ground, but he’s the kind of hitter who would just take the single to right.

He’s not as obsessed with the HR as his HR numbers might indicate.

  163. Mike Myers says:

    shoulda bunted

  164. Greg says:

The Yankees always seem to do this. They get a big lead and they just stop hitting which gives the other team an opening.

  165. Jerome S. says:

If Lee no-hits the Sox, it’s essentially the same as if we got him #amiright?

  166. Xstar7 says:

    Freddy is throwing batting practice

  167. Pat D says:

Beltran just hit a grand slam in Detroit an inning after Bay hit one. The Mets now have a 13-0 lead in the top of the 5th.

For comparison’s sake, the Yankees scored 10 runs in 4 games in Comerica this year.

    Bex, take it away…

  168. Mike Axisa says:

Alright Freddy, get out of this inning and had the ball off to Cory Wade and Hector Noesi.

  169. Cy Pettitte says:

there’s your line drive to Freddy for the game

  170. It'sATarp says:

Hey Brewers looks how nice Garcia’s ERA is…we’ll trade you him for Greinke and Axford

  171. SDM says:

I’m not a sabremetric fan,(I trust the older stats like k/9 bb/9, whip, etc)

Anyway, I was looking up Greinke’s starts this season….how does a player who does not give up many homers, or walks (1.34 bb/9), and possess a strikeout rate of 11.93 have such a high era? Is the Brewer defense that bad?

I get guys have bad starts (I’m glad he had one today)but there seems to be such a huge disconnect between performance and results it shouldn’t even be possible in a fantasy world.

  172. Mike HC says:

I almost think the Brewers players feel like they have finally reached the big leagues playing against the Yanks at Yankee Stadium.

  173. Guest says:

Reyes 4-4 tonight. I never thought I would see the day when a premium athlete, playing a premium position, in his prime, and coming of a career year would leave a NYC team for money reasons where a hard cap was not involved.

    Wow, Mets, wow.

  174. TheLastClown says:

    Flyin Hawaiian bringin some pain.

    Go Phils.

    • Xstar7 says:

Phuck the Phillies. But you have to root for them when they’re playing against Boston.

      • TheLastClown says:

Meh. The only laundry I root against is Boston’s. I have a thing for pitching, so it’s been exciting for me to follow(ish) them this year.

Then, when they steamroll the NL & ultimately lose the WS to us, again, it will crush those poison Phillies fans all the more completely.

  175. Pat D says:

Has anyone ever paid attention to that “Fan EloRater” on BRef? I think it’s silly, but I was looking at John Flaherty’s page to see when he played for Sparky Anderson, and I see he is ranked #1690. Ranked #1689: YUNIESKY BETANCOURT!

    Ah, whimsy.

  176. Mojo says:

Seriously hope the bats don’t halt production here . . .

  177. nycsportzfan says:

Manny Banuelos did his thing for trenton, striking out 7 over 5inn’s, and giving up only 1run on a solo shot.. Also, Corban Joseph smacks a double off ML Expierenced Jesse Litsch… I like Corban…

  178. It'sATarp says:

    Hey Beckett..ain’t regression a bitch?

  179. Pat D says:

Ha! They pointed out that Uecker is in the WWE Hall of Fame!

  180. Xstar7 says:

Lol-Rod. That was a really tough play though.

  181. Monteroisdinero says:

    pastalungingreachingARod.

  182. Prince Fielder in a 1992 McDonald’s commercial with his dad:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcvaYgWc9eY

  183. Karl Krawfid says:

    lol Brewers

  184. Cy Pettitte says:

    Swish!

  185. TheLastClown says:

Swisher = the AJ Burnett of RF?

  186. Guest says:

    Nice throw, Swish.

  187. Monteroisdinero says:

Everything going well for Swish. Martin even used his glove to catch that throw.

  188. tom says:

I guess you’ve got to send him there, and it took a good throw, but…

Considering what a blowout this looked like after 2, Brewer base-running has really prevented them from making a game of it.

  189. King George says:

Is it just me or have we seen Swish do that a lot this year?

    #impressedbyswish

  190. bill says:

Yeah, swish seems sharp out there tonight.

  191. Karl Krawfid says:

    Tex!

  192. Cy Pettitte says:

    Teix! keeping pace with Bautista

  193. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Tex Message!!

  194. Xstar7 says:

Teix Message! He leads the MLB now.

  195. Greg says:

    there’s the insurance

  196. BigTimeBartolo says:

Teix leading MLB with HR’s and Grandy in runs scored.

    Love it

  197. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

The MLB leader in HRs might not start the ASG. Sad.

  198. Guest says:

Gonzo should start the ASG, but Washington has to take him to the ASG, no?

  199. TheLastClown says:

    Teix and the boomstick!

I know all the logic & logistics etc., but I am just dying to see Montero in this lineup.

  200. Mojo says:

For anyone with the slightest inkling of insight into the upcoming offseason: Because he’s been a personal favorite for the past few years, is there any chance whatsoever that the Yankees pursue Prince? His daddy played in pinstripes, so does that influence his decision in any way? I would love NOTHING more than to see the Prince as our everyday DH. I don’t know if he’d okay the off-the-field switch, but I’m already drooling over the mere idea of seeing him don the New York uniform every game of the season. Give him A-Rod money. I honestly wouldn’t care. He’d quickly become a fan favorite and I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that he would really shine in the Bronx. Here’s hoping . . .

  201. Foghorn Leghorn says:

what does Sterling say when Grit hits a homer? I don’t think I’ve ever heard it, for obvious reasons.

  202. Cy Pettitte says:

    what just happened?

  203. Karl Krawfid says:

    This is just comical

  204. jon says:

wtf it says automatic ball on mlb gameday

  205. Xstar7 says:

Really ugly game by the Brewers, I love it.

  206. Reggie C. says:

I know its been discussed already tonight , but Jose OMG Reyes is a one-man wrecking crew tonight. Austin Jackson has 5 total bases and is the lone bright spot for the Tigers. Reyes didnt just resurrect his career, he’s shooting for Hanley money TIMES TWO.

  207. Jonathan Harker says:

With Swisher and Posada now hitting and Jeter on the DL we have one of the best lineups 1-7 ever assembled. It’s a shame that Gardner will be moved down when Jeter comes back, hopefully it’s only temporary. The current 1-2 hitters are such weapons with their legs and both get on base more than Jeter.

  208. Mike Axisa says:

What’s the latest LOL everyone is talking about? I was out of the room…

  209. Reggie C. says:

Jose Reyes is a 30/30 threat.

30 triples, 30 SBs. He’s halfway there on the triples tally. Incredible.

  210. Esteban says:

Arguing with a friend now. Wants no part of Swisher for next year because ‘his BA is low’. Wants to sign Reyes to be DH, leave Jeter at SS because “Jeter’s still a gold glover.’

  211. Pat D says:

Woo hoo! Jorge’s now above .100 as RHB!!

  212. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Worst defense ever…

  213. TheLastClown says:

    MLBN calling Boston’s offense “once-mighty”

  214. Cy Pettitte says:

this is some of the worst defensive baseball I’ve ever seen

  215. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

If I were a major league pitcher, I’d work ultra-deliberately with men on base just to piss off Michael Kay.

  216. Xstar7 says:

The errors just keep on coming. Brilliant.

  217. Pat D says:

    Witness the Yuni!!

  218. IRF says:

    /Yuni-Bomb’d

  219. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I’m going to the game tomorrow night, hopefully the Yankees save a few runs for me.

  220. Pat D says:

    Betancuort? LOL @ YES graphics.

  221. Foghorn Leghorn says:

    Bobby Jenks really sucks.

  222. Pat D says:

After Cincy’s bullpen coughed up a 2-1 lead, Kyle Farnsworth served one up to Jay Bruce to tie the game at 3.

  223. Esteban says:

I’m happy Josh Beckett got hit. but why is this the time I had to pick him in picksix? EFF EMM ELL

  224. Guest says:

What were the odds that the Yanks would have gotten this kind of production out of Colon and Garcia?

Amazing. Probably the biggest key to the entire season.

Imagine if all the quality innings they have given us turned out to be crappy ones.

  225. nunez fan says:

    GO NUNEZ!

  226. TheLastClown says:

T-minus .2 IP until CLee CGSO.

  227. Pat D says:

Swisher has been playing aggressive defense tonight.

  228. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

So Lee just 2hit SHO’d the Sox. Almost as good.

  229. Greg says:

Cliff Lee just went game 1 09 series on the Red Sox. Not only in the result but the manner in which it was done.

  230. Guest says:

Lee and Halladay back to back CGSO.

They are scary good. If Hamels is hot in the playoffs (which barring something completely unforeseen, they will make)…um…this whole season thing might be a bit moot.

    • Pat D says:

      Stranger things have happened.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Just like the Phillies dominated the playoffs last year?

      YCPB

    • Foghorn Leghorn says:

Lee Harvey Oswalt may be gone for the season….

    • Sheepmeister says:

of course, another injury to one of those 3, and another who is human (6-7IP and 3-4 ER), they could be completely beatable.

    • Guest says:

OK, I just looked up their numbers. Sweet mother of all that is holy:

IP H ER HR BB SO K/9 WHIP ERA
      Halladay 127.1 115 34 7 16 123 8.69 1.03 2.40
      Hamels 112.0 86 31 6 21 108 8.68 0.96 2.49
      Lee 122.0 103 36 8 27 119 8.78 1.07 2.66

And that’s BEFORE Lee’s ridiculous performance tonight.

      Amazing.

  231. Foghorn Leghorn says:

boy…Cliff Lee just bitched slapped the Sox…

  232. Xstar7 says:

Noesi just can’t put these hitters away.

  233. Pat D says:

    Rays walked off.

  234. Cy Pettitte says:

    dammit Longoria

  235. Esteban says:

Do you think there are Red Sox fans saying “Damnit the Red Sx should have buried the Yankees when they had the chance?”

O god, why are the Boston sucks chants at Yankees Stadium?

  236. David, Jr. says:

Again, almost impossible to survive without the Cap’n. Gardner, Granderson and Nunez only have five runs scored, four walks and four stolen bases. The opposing teams should give the Yankees therapy ideas so Jetes gets back at the top of the lineup faster.

  237. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I really think that Cliff Lee is the best pitcher in baseball. Having that much movement combined with pinpoint control is just plain unfair.

  238. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Wow I can’t believe the Brewers have no errors.

  239. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Holy crap, Latroy Hawkins has an 0.46 ERA?

    4 walks in 20 innings??

    Really???

  240. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Kay and Flaherty should not be allowed to spend more than 3 hours together.

    This is too uncomfortable.

  241. Pat D says:

Uh oh. Brett is 3 for his last 23.

Now where’s whoever it was that thinks this means I’m saying Brett is a fourth outfielder??

  242. Dino Velvet says:

the offensive looks so much better without jeter.

  243. Mister Delaware says:

How’s it going, guys? I just went to a food festival, but I had diarrhea. Really kills the concept, huh?

(Love that Swish homered. Looking forward to that .200 isoP.)

  244. Monteroisdinero says:

Greg Smith with a poor outing for Scranton tonight. Too bad.

  245. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Seriously, Kay and Flash together is the most awkward thing since Kay and Justice.

  246. Rob says:

I think mo can grow a full beard over the course of a game

  247. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Note to Milwaukee: that’s why you don’t walk Ramiro Pena when you’re down 9 runs in the 8th.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Note to Milwaukee: that’s why you don’t walk Ramiro Pena when you’re down 9 runs in the 8th.

      Fixed

  248. Xstar7 says:

    Heh, Craig Counsell.

  249. Mister Delaware says:

Put it on the left side, m-fuckers.

  250. Esteban says:

    Solid win.

  251. TheLastClown says:

Have all the games this year, this is one’ve my favorites.

  252. Xstar7 says:

    Well, it was a battle.

  253. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Cory Wade is clutch. Playing fireman in the bottom of the 9th. Close game.

    • Mister Delaware says:

Can we start calling him Co-Wa? I feel like a fanbase needs to embrace and nickname its middle men.
