Jeter has Grade I strain of right calf

By

Update (10:50pm): The MRI showed a Grade I strain of the calf, which is the lowest grade strain there is. They’ll determine the next step tomorrow, but I have a hard time believing he’ll avoid the disabled list.

Update (10:08pm): Joe Girardi said after the game that the Yankees are sending Jeter for an MRI, which is a bit of a no-brainer. “Obviously we’re worried about him,” said the skipper, who mentioned that Jeter is unlikely to play tomorrow even if the MRI comes back clean.

Update (9:03pm): Jeter left the game with a sore right calf. That’s all we know right now, though I assume they’ll do some tests to make sure “sore” isn’t really “strain.”

Original Post (8:46pm): Derek Jeter left tonight’s game with an apparent leg injury after flying out to lead off the fifth inning. He just pulled up lame on his way to first, and was then seen slamming his helmet as he walked into the clubhouse with trainer Steve Donohue. The chase for 3,000 might be put on hold. More to come.

Can the Yanks catch a break?

    • Steve S. says:

Umm…you could make the argument the Yanks best 9 players doesn’t include Jeter. I mean, is it unreasonable to think Nunez could post a .325+ OBP with more speed on the bases and better defense?

He certainly has no business leading off anymore, so I view this as an opportunity for a little batting order efficiency.

      • Monteroisdinero says:

        This.

      • MikeD says:

Well, I’m not really sure if Nunez can post a .325 OBP. Nunez’s defense has also been horrible, although the errors seem to have gone down, for now.

But the point taken. Losing Jeter 2011 is not like losing Jeter 2009. Who knows, if it’s a strain, it might increase his chances of getting # 3,000 at home.

        • Steve S. says:

A lot of the throwing issues was rushing his throws playing 3B, where he’s a natural SS. BA rated his arm one of the best tools in the Yankee system last year, and he’s known for making highlight reel plays at SS, mostly with his plus arm. But it’s such a strength that sometimes he relies on it too much, is out of position and his throws become erratic. Long story short its correctable, as we’ve seen recently.

          • CMP says:

I agree swapping Jeter for a week or so of Nunez could easily end up being a wash.

Also maybe then he gets 3000 at home as several have mentioned which would be most appropriate.

          • MikeD says:

He was having issues at short, too, but overall it was because he was rushing his throws, both at third and at SS. A-Rod made a good observation right at the peak of Nunez’s problems. The kid has such a good arm that he believes he play further back and still get the runner. That may be true at times, but he found himself in situations where he’d get the ball and look up and see the hitter way down the line to first, causing him to rush his throws. But, yes, it’s correctable, hopefully. His arm does rate well, but he has had accuracy issues prior.

            • Monteroisdinero says:

Nunez will continue to improve defensively with playing time.

              • MikeD says:

True, because he certainly isn’t going to hit and field much worse and maintain his spot on the team.

              • Cris Pengiuci says:

Right. As he has playing regularly at AAA.

I’m not convinced. As poorly as Jeter has played, I feel he’s still far and away better then Nunez. However, it will give the Yankees an opportunity to fine tune the line up, which is definitely a plus.

                • Cris Pengiuci says:

BTW, the “playing regularly at AAA” comment refers back to previous years. I realize that wasn’t obvious by the way I wrote it. While playing time has certainly been inconsistent this year, I’m not yet convinced he’ll be an upgrade defensively or offensively (other that his range in the field).

                  • TheLastClown says:

Upgraded range in the field = Upgraded defensively.

                    Just sayin.

                    • Urban says:

The raw tools are there for Nunez, but they haven’t translated. Maybe playing reguarly will help him, but his defensive ratings right now are worse than Jeter.

  2. Jeter Meter says:

Maybe it’s to make sure he gets 3000 at home next homestand?

  3. mbonzo says:

Well as long as we’re trying to get Krod and Beltran, is Reyes busy doing anything?

    • Steve S. says:

I know you’re kidding around, but people need to stop the Reyes stuff. It will never happen, as a trade or FA.

      • mbonzo says:

I’m totally kidding, but if the Yanks are gonna target a SS, it’ll be him. If it doesn’t cost Montero, Banuelos, or Betances I’d be in for the rental, assuming we’re talking about Jeter out for a few months.

  4. july ticket sales are booming right now.

  5. the tenth inning stretch says:

I’m betting they’ll be very “cautious” with him and hold him out a couple games to make sure he can get his 3000th at home.

  6. GT Yankee says:

If Yankee Mgmt Could—-Wow Derek…..we really want you to reach 3K too, but we don’t want it to harm you for the rest of the season….let’s give it 6-8 weeks to properly heal :-)

  7. EndlessMikeJr says:

If Jeter is out for awhile who’s gonna hit infield singles for the yankees?

  8. Monteroisdinero says:

There is a ton of marketing money in Jeter 3000. I predict he will DL and return for the next homestand.

  9. Monteroisdinero says:

Didn’t ARod have a calf strain coming out of the batter’s box last year? He missed some time.

    • Urban says:

He did, but I can’t remember what strain level it was. It certainly wasn’t a three, but it might have been a two.

  10. MikeD says:

If Jeter pulled up lame in the last game of the homestand still short of 3,000, I’d scream Conspiracy!!!

  11. Monteroisdinero says:

With Jeter’s righty bat out for a week or two (my bet) and only one healthy and crappy catcher-let us all pray for Jesus.

  12. GT Yankee says:

I’m wondering if it’s a torn calf muscle if he was mad enough to slam his helmet….been there, done that

  13. stuart a says:

why is swisher swinging 3 and 0 in the count lefty? he is hitting 175 lefty, there is a runner on 1st no outs. WHY?

does girardi even have a take sign?????????????

just plain stupidity and btw THIS IS A FIRST GUESS NOT A 2ND GUESS, THEY DO IT ALL THE TIME………..

    • Monteroisdinero says:

That and the Gardner bunt-just dumb and dumber.

Swish bothers me more because he can’t run and sucks in the of. He is NOTHING without his offense and power.

Swish will get the whole season to suck because, as we know, everyone else we have to try out there sucks even more.

  14. Guy Montag says:

That’s fine. Place him on the DL and get him healthy. We can live with Nunez but we cannot live with Nunez and Cervelli in the same lineup, especially when we go to NL parks. Jesus Montero must be called up tomorrow and Cervelli sent down. Call up Pena to replace Jeter.

  15. Erica says:

    Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh.

  16. Monteroisdinero says:

That type of injury can really limit range at SS.

lol-might as well put Jeter in a chair at SS for a month.

  17. Karim Garcia says:

Bummer. I’m going to the series in Chicago this weekend. Was hoping if he didn’t get 3000 at home, he’d do it while I was there.

  18. Urban says:

Grade 1 strain? Considering he’s a SS, and not a DH, I also think it’s unlikely he won’t hit the DL. I’m not a fan of Nunez, but considering Jeter is no longer of the ’95-’09 vintage, the team will be fine with Nunez for a couple weeks.

  19. bonestock94 says:

Well, that should make throws from SS to first a hell of a lot more interesting.

  20. Urban says:

Hmmm, if they put him on the 15-day DL, it doesn’t really guarantee he’ll get number 3000 at home. The situation is actually a little less likely than if he didn’t leave tonight’s game.

He’d be returning just as the Yankees begin six straight road games, starting with the Mets at Citi, and a stretch of fourteen of eighteen games on the road. His only chance for getting his 3000th hit at Yankee Stadium is a four-game series against the Rays July 7th-10th.

Of course, that all said, if he returns on the road still six hits short, they could manipulate his playing time so he returns a couple of game into the road trip, and then sit him a game if he gets to 2,999.

The other option is he doesn’t go on the DL if the strain isn’t that bad, but he sits out the next two series and then once again the Yankees manipulate his playing time so he gets the big hit against the Rockies back at the Stadium.

I really don’t Girardi will do too much manipulation here. Maybe a game or two max. He’s going to do what’s best for the team, and if Nunuz scoring high on the suckitude scale, he’ll reinsert Jeter in the lineup as soon as he can.

  21. Russelling says:

I’ll probably get sh*t for this, but I’d like to see Ramiro Pena fill in at SS. He’s got better range, and I think he’s a more experienced hitter.

  22. Nico says:

I know I shouldnt say this but I’m actually quite happy because I live in Europe and I’m going to see the Yankees on the 29th against the Brewers, and there is a slight chance Jeter might be in the lineup chasing 3000… That would be pretty cool
I hope he doesnt hit the DL or he won’t be there

  23. Chris says:

If they put him on the 15 day DL today he will be back on the 28th of June, home against the Brewers for interleague play….Just sayin, don’t be shocked if he isn’t playing at all this road trip.
