Monday Open Thread

By

The Yankees are off tonight, so here’s an open thread to hold everyone over. Of course, the draft begins at 7pm ET (MLB Network) and I’ll be liveblogging it, so hopefully you’ll come join me then. Use this thread as you see fit tonight, anything goes.

Klaw questioned Jerez’s age in his chat today.

  2. nycsportzfan says:

Heres to hoping Bryan Brickhouse is a Yankee at the end of this draft…

  3. Oliver says:

After hearing all the juvenile reactions from Sabean and Posey, you’d think that the Giants would have taken the advice from their own stupid video.

    It gets better, dumbass.

    • Brian says:

I thought Posey came out against any threats towards Cousins. Also, what’s stupid about their video? It’s about bullying.

      • Oliver says:

So Buster Posey is against killing Scott Cousins. Put him down for Man Of The Year. The whole Giants organization has been rather immature about this whole situation. Refusing to talk to the guy? Saying if he never plays again you’ll be happy?

I used to like Posey a lot, but he’s acting like a baby here.

And the video isn’t necessarily about bullying-it’s anti suicide. I have very little respect for people who think killing themselves is the best way to “deal” with their problems.

        • Brian says:

Posey didn’t say that Sabean did. I agree what Sabean said was uncalled for but I don’t think Posey has done anything. And I still don’t think there is anything stupid about saying “hey kid who is maliciously picked on because you’re different, don’t kill yourself.”

          • Mike HC says:

“hey kid who is maliciously picked on because you’re different, don’t kill yourself.”

haha, Is it bad that I laughed at this?

Just wanna get this off my chest.

Fuck you, Randy Levine. I hope you’re happy watching this round go by, asshole.

    I’m done.

Number one picks, even in an epiphany draft, are lottery tickets. We all know the flame-out rate is high.

So if you want to sign a bit time type A free agent, don’t let the draft be the reason you decide not to pull the trigger.

BUT. If you are planning on shelling out big bucks for a type A that you are not sure about, and you are approaching a epiphany draft, I think that the epiphany draft should be a factor in the decision making process.

Now, I would’ve agreed with Cashman and been adamantly against the signing anyway; but when you add in the additional factor of the draft…that deal seemed imprudent at the time and down right wrong-headed in the present.

    Sigh.

  6. first time lawng time says:

Umm I’d rather have Soriano now than some scrub I’m not going to see for like 5 years.

    • Guest says:

Well, you want Soriano for 12 mill a year to be a middle reliever? On a deal where the Yanks have all the down-side (Soriano opts to stay for all three years if he struggles) and non of the up-side (if he’s lights out, he opts-out)?

And, yes, its highly likely that you won’t even see the guy the Yanks draft No. 1. But that guy has a shot at being a solid major league starter who is cost controlled for six years. That is way more valuable than an injury prone middle reliever that you are paying 12 mil a year.

      • first time lawng time says:

Yeah, but I don’t care about paying Soriano. It’s not my money. And he was lights out last year, so he could have been nice in the pen.

        • Xstar7 says:

I’m more pissed about the draft pick he cost the Yankees than the money they’re paying him. And he hasn’t been worth either so far.

          • first time lawng time says:

I don’t get what’s so great about a draft pick. There’s no guarantee he’ll be good, there’s no guarantee he’ll still be on the team, and if he is still on the team, we won’t see him for a few years.

I’d rather have Soriano, who was great last year and could provide value now.

            • Xstar7 says:

Soriano may have had a great year last year, but Brian Fuentes had a pretty good year last year too and look how that turned out. Signing relievers to huge long-term contracts is almost always a bad decision (unless that relievers name is Mariano Rivera) because most relief pitchers are inconsistent and you don’t know what you’ll get from them. Draft picks on the other hand only have an upside. The draftee could end up being valuable to this team. And if he doesn’t, it will cost the Yankees virtually nothing. And this year’s draft was stacked.

        • Brian says:

Last year he was lucky. His career FIP against lefties is over 4, he’s a fly ball pitcher, and he has injury problems. Reason enough not to give him a multi year contract.

  7. Monteroisdinero says:

    2 unrelated questions/points:

    1) Do the Yanks play “Take Me Out To the Ballgame” (after God Bless America) during the 7th inning stretch and if not, why not? Is God Bless America a permanent event now? We got Bin Laden-let’s go back to the old traditions.

    2) Gardy head first sliding into Aybar’s foot at 2nd base yesterday seems scary for hand/wrist injuries on SB’s. No way Aybar does that with spikes coming in first.

    • Hall and Nokes says:

I’d retire it after this season, with the exception of Memorial Day/July 4/9-11. It’s gotten to be de rigueur. But that’s not going to be how it goes down.

    • Accent Shallow says:

      1) They do, thankfully. “God Bless America” is a horseshit song, and since it’s not the anthem, I ain’t standing.

  8. Mike Myers says:

If we had 20/20….Yankess throw 10 mil at cole when they had the chance?

  9. Stryker says:

dante bichette jr. that is all.
