Pettitte: ‘I don’t think I will ever pitch again’

By

For those of you holding out hope that Andy Pettitte will have a change of heart and return the Yankees either later this year or next, well you can pretty much forget about it. Pettitte appeared on The Michael Kay Show yesterday, telling the host “I’m not dying to be playing baseball right now … I’m absolutely loving being home … I don’t think I will ever pitch again.” Andy coaches his son’s Pony League team and plays on his church softball team, but otherwise he’s just loving the retired life. “I’m just another dad out there.”

I’d given up hoping for Andy’s return about 6 weeks ago. It was a nice dream, but ddn’t seem likely. Good to hear he’s enjoying retirement. Would love to see him batting in his church softball league!

  2. Yank The Frank says:

Thanks for the memories Andy, you’re making the right decision.
Put his number on the wall and give him his day.

  3. FachoinaNYY says:

It’s really nice for Andy the person and good for him.

But… still really sucks for the Yanks/Us.

  4. Daniel says:

he sounded bored to me when he mentioned that he has the shiniest cars in town because he washes them everyday.

  5. I wonder if PosadaGate had anything to do with his decision becoming final.

  6. Mickey Scheister says:

Enjoy the millions….AND MILLIONS you got and earned in your glorious run as one of the best LHP in my youth. He sounds happy and content being just a (millionaire) Dad. We’ll see Andy again in some capacity when his kids are grown and he’s bored with just bible study on Wednesdays.

  7. S says:

thats gotta suck if your in that church league….think about it your all happy ready to win then you see the most clutch pitcher in the history of the most storied baseball franchise, walking up to the field.

  8. CBean says:

    I miss you, Andy Pettitte.

  9. mustang says:

    Good for him.

    Enjoy!

  10. Guest says:

Now, that is the life. Wonderful career, millions of dollars, retired early enough to watch his kids grow up, left before the injuries became chronic life-long…

    Not bad, not bad.

(Note to self, if kid picks up baseball with left hand, quit job and learn everything there is to learn about pitching).

  11. Klemy says:

I’m happy for him. He seems at peace with his decision. More power to him for enjoying being a father and husband at this point in his life.

+1… nothing is sadder than watching a guy try and string it back together after walking away….

unless that guy finds himself a good ‘stem cell’ guy, then its all good!

  12. Foghorn Leghorn says:

I never thought I’d say this…but Bartolo Colon has made me forget about Andy Pettite.

  13. bexarama says:

Totally understandable and counting on him for a return was crazy, but miss ya, Andy.

  14. LarryM.,Fl. says:

I have not thought about Andy once during the season. But, it has been strange watching the Yankee present rotation with Hughes out and 3/5′s of it filled with guys who may not be here in a couple of months. So, BC if I have these thoughts then I suspect that you will be working the phones fairly heavy in a couple of weeks.

  15. Andy Pettitte says:

I’m just another dad…with a quarter bil in the bank! Yeeeeeeeeeeah Boi!

  16. I am not the droids you're looking for... says:

Having heard the entire interview when it aired, I couldn’t disagree more with the doom and gloom. Frankly, I am positive Andy will pitch for us again. And not just on Old Timers Day.

The guy is obviously bored out of his skull. You can tell that the soccer mom (sorry…) lifestyle is filling the hours of his day, and he’s probably happy to avoid some of the grind of a long season,, but on balance he sounded like a guy whose heart is sad and soul is empty.

He is a fierce competitor who will heed the siren song of “one more go” at Yankee Stadium. Washing cars (and bragging how they’re the shiniest in the neighborhood?!?), church leagues, and carting kids to and fro? Puh-leaze.

Andy will pitch again for the Yankees. Likely next season.

    Book it.

  17. Woody Sweats says:

Would you rather be a pitcher making the transition to slow pitch softball, in that none of your major league talents directly translate, therefore making you “just one of the guys” and everyone can treat you normally, or be a position player and be able to hit a homer at every at bat, and have people afraid to pitch to you or talk to you during games?
