Pettitte: ‘I don’t think I will ever pitch again’
ByFor those of you holding out hope that Andy Pettitte will have a change of heart and return the Yankees either later this year or next, well you can pretty much forget about it. Pettitte appeared on The Michael Kay Show yesterday, telling the host “I’m not dying to be playing baseball right now … I’m absolutely loving being home … I don’t think I will ever pitch again.” Andy coaches his son’s Pony League team and plays on his church softball team, but otherwise he’s just loving the retired life. “I’m just another dad out there.”

I’d given up hoping for Andy’s return about 6 weeks ago. It was a nice dream, but ddn’t seem likely. Good to hear he’s enjoying retirement. Would love to see him batting in his church softball league!
I wonder what position Andy plays.
he prob bats cleanup haha
“Andy we’re going to drop you in the lineup today, okay?”
“Excuse me? Which one of us has an RBI single in a World Series game? This guy. Pen me in at four, chief.”
I need a mental health day. And my back hurts.
I’m hopefully taking a mental health vacation. Unpaid, of course, but I won’t have to listen to people whine about their phones for a month!
Hi Bexybait, I missed you.
Thanks for the memories Andy, you’re making the right decision.
Put his number on the wall and give him his day.
It’s really nice for Andy the person and good for him.
But… still really sucks for the Yanks/Us.
he sounded bored to me when he mentioned that he has the shiniest cars in town because he washes them everyday.
I wonder if PosadaGate had anything to do with his decision becoming final.
Or Jeter ContractGate. Or MansionGate.
He doesn’t want to be part of an organization that cares so little about the draft.

“Drafts are for poor people…”

I laughed.
lol
Enjoy the millions….AND MILLIONS you got and earned in your glorious run as one of the best LHP in my youth. He sounds happy and content being just a (millionaire) Dad. We’ll see Andy again in some capacity when his kids are grown and he’s bored with just bible study on Wednesdays.
thats gotta suck if your in that church league….think about it your all happy ready to win then you see the most clutch pitcher in the history of the most storied baseball franchise, walking up to the field.
Andy in a church league is probably like Peyton Manning donating his time to the United Way.

Hah, yeah he’s probably glaring to the catcher over his glove and all.
DAMNIT, CHERYL, STOP CALLING FOR THE CURVEBALL, I’M THROWING THE HEAT!!!!
Nahh, it would be pretty awesome to be able to say I roped a double off of the dude with the most wins in postseason history.
that was the first thing I thought of.. I feel so bad for the other team, so not fair.
… think about it, you’re all happy, ready to win, then you see the most clutch pitcher in the history of the most storied baseball franchise,
Tim Wakefield?
That’s only because Casey Kelly totally sucks now.
that’s ok because we all know that Theo drafted the next 1-2 starters yesterday..
8 Aces???
7. Dice-K’s on the shelf.
don’t you know that Casey Kelly is just working on stuff and that is the only reason he’s sucking…he has such a smooth, natural delivery and it will all fall into place.
There is no guarantee he’s the best player on that team. Hell I’ll take the monster guy on my team that jacks 400 ft homers and hits .800 every year. Softball is a different animal. Most baseball players are terrible initially at it because the mechanics are so different. Plus Andy pitched. There is nothing about pitching at all that translates to slow pitch softball.
This is nothing compared to when Joey Galloway was holding out years back and playing flag football. That is terrifying.
Aaron Rodgers went yard twice yesterday in the Packers team softball games. I’m sure AP has figured it out by now.
So an NFL QB hits 2 homers and that makes Pettitte the best player and feared by everyone in his league? How is that relevant? Its softball, everyone can go yard which is why they limit homers on fenced fields.
I play softball and I’m aware of that. Point is he’s a pro athlete, maybe he’s not the best player on the field, but I highly doubt he’s struggling. If a QB can handle it, I’m sure a former MLB player can.
this. I also played beer league and for the athleticism alone, I would think he could be alright.
Shit, I’ve played in some leagues where a proessional bowler could excel.
reminds me of a Letterman show back in the late 80s…he had a mug on his desk that read…”I bowl because I’m fat and I like to drink!”
I miss you, Andy Pettitte.
Good for him.
Enjoy!
Now, that is the life. Wonderful career, millions of dollars, retired early enough to watch his kids grow up, left before the injuries became chronic life-long…
Not bad, not bad.
(Note to self, if kid picks up baseball with left hand, quit job and learn everything there is to learn about pitching).
(Note to self, if kid picks up baseball with left hand, quit job and learn everything there is to learn about pitching).
Sounds like a plan.
Sincerely,
Todd Marinovich’s dad
I’d rather be surfing.
Touche. The comment was meant in jest, but your point is the stronger one.
Bad things happen to the children of parents who force them to live a life they don’t want to live.
I’m happy for him. He seems at peace with his decision. More power to him for enjoying being a father and husband at this point in his life.
+1… nothing is sadder than watching a guy try and string it back together after walking away….
unless that guy finds himself a good ‘stem cell’ guy, then its all good!
I never thought I’d say this…but Bartolo Colon has made me forget about Andy Pettite.
Totally understandable and counting on him for a return was crazy, but miss ya, Andy.
I have not thought about Andy once during the season. But, it has been strange watching the Yankee present rotation with Hughes out and 3/5′s of it filled with guys who may not be here in a couple of months. So, BC if I have these thoughts then I suspect that you will be working the phones fairly heavy in a couple of weeks.
baseball is virtually unpredictable.
thats my line, dick…

well, where the hell were you? you need to be on top of this stuff.

I’m just another dad…with a quarter bil in the bank! Yeeeeeeeeeeah Boi!
Having heard the entire interview when it aired, I couldn’t disagree more with the doom and gloom. Frankly, I am positive Andy will pitch for us again. And not just on Old Timers Day.
The guy is obviously bored out of his skull. You can tell that the soccer mom (sorry…) lifestyle is filling the hours of his day, and he’s probably happy to avoid some of the grind of a long season,, but on balance he sounded like a guy whose heart is sad and soul is empty.
He is a fierce competitor who will heed the siren song of “one more go” at Yankee Stadium. Washing cars (and bragging how they’re the shiniest in the neighborhood?!?), church leagues, and carting kids to and fro? Puh-leaze.
Andy will pitch again for the Yankees. Likely next season.
Book it.
Would you rather be a pitcher making the transition to slow pitch softball, in that none of your major league talents directly translate, therefore making you “just one of the guys” and everyone can treat you normally, or be a position player and be able to hit a homer at every at bat, and have people afraid to pitch to you or talk to you during games?
