Four Yankees named to All-Star starting lineup, Teixeira asked to participate in Homerun Derby

By

Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Curtis Granderson will start the All-Star Game at their respective positions thanks to the fan voting. Alex Avila surged past Russell Martin in the voting last week, so he’ll (deservingly) start behind the plate. Adrian Gonzalez will start at first, David Ortiz at designated hitter, and Grandy will be flanked in the outfield by Josh Hamilton and Jose Bautista.

Update: Ortiz, captain of the AL Homerun Derby squad, has asked Mark Teixiera will join him on the team. Adrian and Bautista are confirmed as the other two participants, but Tex has yet to accept.

Update Part Deux: Mariano Rivera was named to the All-Star pitching staff but CC Sabathia was not. Felix Hernandez and Justin Verlander made the team but are scheduled to start next Sunday, which would make them ineligible to pitch in the All-Star Game. They’ll be replaced on the roster, though CC is scheduled to pitch that day as well.

Update Part Three: Martin makes it as a reserve. So six total Yankees are heading to the desert in a week. It’s A-Rod‘s 14th All-Star selection, Jeter’s 12th, Mo’s 12th, Cano’s third, Martin’s third, and Granderson’s second. Congrats to all.

Homerun derby squad? Are they doing an AL vs. NL thing this year? (Is that new? I can’t remember if I watched the homerun derby last year.)

Has Tex ever participated before? I always worry about guys messing up their swings.

  2. Bernard says:

Valverde and League in, CC and Robertson out? Eww…

  3. Greg says:

Robertson I understand not getting in, but CC should be there I think

  4. Pat D says:

Jose Valverde? Brandon League? C.J. Wilson? MICHAEL FUCKING YOUNG?!?!?

    Fuck Ron Washington.

And, wow, did most of those player’s picks suck ass, too. Further proof that they shouldn’t be picking this shit.

  5. first time lawng time says:

CC has been better than CJ this year.

Robertson is better than Valverde IMO.

Teixeira should be in (not as a starter though)

Jeter should not be in the all star game.

    Not sure about Martin.

    • Greg says:

Jeter is in under the Cal Ripken Jr. law.
Martin with his defense and offense does deserve to be there.
Tex will be in the Home Run Derby
I expect Robertson to be among the candidates for the final vote.
      C.J. was Washington’s pet pick.

      • Pat D says:

I don’t think pitchers can be among those choices.

      • Kevin D. says:

For some reason people act like Jeter is getting away with murder with this all-star selection. He is very deserving of the career achievement all-star selection. It was fine when it happened to Cal and Griffey so it is fine in this case. Congrats Jeter!

    • Xstar7 says:

Avila has been much better than Martin.

      • first time lawng time says:

Yeah. I’m not sure if Martin is the second best catcher, so I’m not sure if he should even be in there.

  6. The Big City of Dreams says:

but Tex has yet to accept.

    —————————–

    he better not accept

  7. Gonzo says:

Sorry for the off topic, but I’m on my phone.

Yankees strike in IFA! Miguel Andujar, 750k. Yay!

  8. dino says:

Robertson should have been the easiest choice for relief pitchers. He leads all AL relievers in WAR, K/9, ERA, xFIP, and is 2nd in FIP.

  9. Steve S. says:

Yawn. I’d rather have all of these guys get the extra days off.

  10. V says:

As if we needed more evidence that Ron Washington is a fucking imbecile.

  11. Cuso says:

Nova optioned. Boom! That just happened.

  12. Kevin D. says:

Did I miss a selection or did McCutchen just get fucked. WHERE THE FUCK IS MCCUTCHEN !?!?

  13. Pat D says:

Wow, Bochy showed more nepotism than Washington.

  14. Pat D says:

    Final Vote candidates:
AL: Alex Gordon, Adam Jones, Paul Konerko, Victor Martinez, Ben Zobrist

NL: Andre Ethier, Todd Helton, Ian Kennedy, Michael Morse, Shane Victorino

Yea, that happened. Fuck this shit.

    I mean, FUCK THIS SHIT.

  15. mike c says:

    brandon league sucks

  16. CMP says:

CC,Teix and Robertson all should have made it. Too bad they got robbed but in the big picture, the 3 days off is probably more important anyway.

  17. Crime Dog says:

McCutchen isn’t even on the final vote ballot? Holy crap

  18. Zack D says:

I’ll laugh if Washington bats Jeter 9th

  19. Kevin D. says:

I hope McCutchen goes on an FU rampage after the ASB.I do not remember a bigger snub than this.

  20. Notorious Mofo says:

CC not being picked is a joke. And Venters over Kimbrel is also a joke. Managers are as bad as players with their picks. And the one player from every team needs to be dropped. Aaron Crow is an all star but not CC.

    • Pat D says:

This is seriously the first time I’ve agreed with dumping the team requirement.

Last year Girardi got criticized for not taking Weaver, then he named Weaver as a replacement even though he couldn’t pitch due to the Sunday before rule. Maybe Washington will get pressured to do that this year, we can only hope.

      • Zack D says:

        Dump team requirement.
        Dump deciding home-field.
Dump selecting guys to replace guys to replace guys to replace guys so you don’t have 50 “all-stars” per league.

    • Kevin D. says:

Both Venters and Kimbrel are amazing relief pitchers and they both deserve to attend the AS game. That being said I would have to say that Venters is the better pitcher.

    • Hall and Nokes says:

Venters over Kimbrel is weird but understandable, as Venters has been the better pitcher in most respects.

Brian Wilson over Kimbrel is lame.

  21. Hall and Nokes says:

    The Yankee Clippard made it!

    But Jeff Karstens didn’t.

    Neither did Darrell Rasner.

  22. Bavarian Yankee says:

guys like CC and Robertson (probably) weren’t selected because EVERY team has to have at least 1 player on the All-Star team and that takes away a few roster spots. That’s the only reason why a guy like Brandon League makes the All-Star team. Robertson is a borderline All-Star because he’s “just” a middle reliever but hell, CC HAS to be an All-Star, the stats prove that.

  23. It'sATarp says:

CJ over CC, Valverde over D-rob, Michael Young over uhhh well i can give you a whole list of people….yea pure ridiculous.

  24. Hall and Nokes says:

Why does the AL need a backup DH? Are they playing AL rules in Arizona?

  25. Chris says:

Tex not being invited is a travesty!

  26. Mister Delaware says:

Joe Torre thinks not enough Giants and Rangers were selected.

  27. sean says:

cc should be an all star…thats not right who is in charge of making that decision?
