Four Yankees named to All-Star starting lineup, Teixeira asked to participate in Homerun Derby

By

Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Curtis Granderson will start the All-Star Game at their respective positions thanks to the fan voting. Alex Avila surged past Russell Martin in the voting last week, so he’ll (deservingly) start behind the plate. Adrian Gonzalez will start at first, David Ortiz at designated hitter, and Grandy will be flanked in the outfield by Josh Hamilton and Jose Bautista.

Update: Ortiz, captain of the AL Homerun Derby squad, has asked Mark Teixiera will join him on the team. Adrian and Bautista are confirmed as the other two participants, but Tex has yet to accept.

Update Part Deux: Mariano Rivera was named to the All-Star pitching staff but CC Sabathia was not. Felix Hernandez and Justin Verlander made the team but are scheduled to start next Sunday, which would make them ineligible to pitch in the All-Star Game. They’ll be replaced on the roster, though CC is scheduled to pitch that day as well.

Update Part Three: Martin makes it as a reserve. So six total Yankees are heading to the desert in a week. It’s A-Rod‘s 14th All-Star selection, Jeter’s 12th, Mo’s 12th, Cano’s third, Martin’s third, and Granderson’s second. Congrats to all.

Homerun derby squad? Are they doing an AL vs. NL thing this year? (Is that new? I can’t remember if I watched the homerun derby last year.)

Has Tex ever participated before? I always worry about guys messing up their swings.

  • Bernard

Valverde and League in, CC and Robertson out? Eww…

  • Greg

Robertson I understand not getting in, but CC should be there I think

  • Pat D

Jose Valverde? Brandon League? C.J. Wilson? MICHAEL FUCKING YOUNG?!?!?

    Fuck Ron Washington.

And, wow, did most of those player’s picks suck ass, too. Further proof that they shouldn’t be picking this shit.

    • Greg

I thought they did very well with the picks. Michael Young was a players pick. League leads the AL in saves with 21. Valverde leads the AL in games finished.

C.J. Wilson was Washington’s pet pick.

      • first time lawng time

Robertson has a better ERA. In fact, he has one of the best ERAs among relievers.

        • Greg

He’s a middle reliever. That’s all you need to know why he wasnt selected.

          • Pat D

Which shows that the players and manager don’t know shit.

          • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

Yeah, even Joba Chamberlain wasn’t selected in 2007. That tells you all you need to know.

            waits patiently….waits….

            • Pat D

              Wait a second!

          • nycsportzfan

aaron crow is a middle reliever, hes on the team.. Matt Thornton, Hun chi kuo are all middle relievers that have made it in the past… It happens, and Robertson is having a better yr then any of those guys had…

      • Pat D

Valverde is shit. League can’t strike anyone out.

        And Young still sucks.

        • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

Valverde leads all of baseball in ass shaking and histrionics. That should count for something.

    • Zack D

It’s ok, this time it counts.

  • first time lawng time

CC has been better than CJ this year.

Robertson is better than Valverde IMO.

Teixeira should be in (not as a starter though)

Jeter should not be in the all star game.

    Not sure about Martin.

    • Greg

Jeter is in under the Cal Ripken Jr. law.
Martin with his defense and offense does deserve to be there.
Tex will be in the Home Run Derby
I expect Robertson to be among the candidates for the final vote.
      C.J. was Washington’s pet pick.

      • Pat D

I don’t think pitchers can be among those choices.

        • Pat D

Well, I was wrong about that, but DRob still wasn’t a choice.

      • Kevin D.

For some reason people act like Jeter is getting away with murder with this all-star selection. He is very deserving of the career achievement all-star selection. It was fine when it happened to Cal and Griffey so it is fine in this case. Congrats Jeter!

        • Pat D

Yea, I’m not going to feel too sorry for Jhonny Peralta.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Avila has been much better than Martin.

      • first time lawng time

Yeah. I’m not sure if Martin is the second best catcher, so I’m not sure if he should even be in there.

  • The Big City of Dreams

but Tex has yet to accept.

    —————————–

    he better not accept

  • Gonzo

Sorry for the off topic, but I’m on my phone.

Yankees strike in IFA! Miguel Andujar, 750k. Yay!

    • Nuke Ladoosh

Where did you hear this? Its not on Ben Badler’s prospect blog yet.

      • Gonzo

        Listin Diario is reporting it.

  • dino

Robertson should have been the easiest choice for relief pitchers. He leads all AL relievers in WAR, K/9, ERA, xFIP, and is 2nd in FIP.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

He’s also the league leader in Highest Socks rate.

      • first time lawng time

        Ahhh IETC

      • dino

        thats gotta count for something

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

Yawn. I’d rather have all of these guys get the extra days off.

  • V

As if we needed more evidence that Ron Washington is a fucking imbecile.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

      • Pat D

        This.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

He’s a very likable guy, but some of his moves make you wonder what the heck he’s thinking.

  • Cuso

Nova optioned. Boom! That just happened.

  • Kevin D.

Did I miss a selection or did McCutchen just get fucked. WHERE THE FUCK IS MCCUTCHEN !?!?

    • Greg

He’ll be on the lsit for the final vote, as will Robertson I believe.

  • Pat D

Wow, Bochy showed more nepotism than Washington.

  • Pat D

    Final Vote candidates:
AL: Alex Gordon, Adam Jones, Paul Konerko, Victor Martinez, Ben Zobrist

NL: Andre Ethier, Todd Helton, Ian Kennedy, Michael Morse, Shane Victorino

Yea, that happened. Fuck this shit.

    I mean, FUCK THIS SHIT.

    • Greg

Ben Zobrist and Victor Martinez I have an issue with. The others are fine by me.

      • V

        Zobrist has been damn good.

        • Greg

          .263 9HR 40RBI

          eh…..

          • V

Step away from the fantasy baseball statistics. Best 2B in baseball this year, incorporating total package (defense, on base percentage, power).

Shouldn’t surprise me, though. You’re the same guy who thought Evan Longoria was underwhelming. Hint: Doubles are important, too.

            • Andrew

Yea, but 2 home runs and 10 RBIs came in one double header. Yea, I know they all count, but Zobrist has really not been that good this year outside of a 12 hour period.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

At least Paul Konerko is a final vote candidate.

      • Pat D

Yes, but Gordon and Jones? Why? Just to possibly have another outfielder? Even though he’s been slumping, Gardner has as much of a case as them.

        • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Yeah, some of those candidates just don’t make any sense. Who decides this shit anyway?

          • Pat D

            I’d love to know.

        • Greg

Gordon’s had a solid year for the Royals hitting .293. Jones hitting .26 with 13 homers

          • Greg

            .286 with 13 homers

            • Pat D

They’re not more deserving than Teix or DRob.

And that’s honestly not being biased.

  • mike c

    brandon league sucks

  • CMP

CC,Teix and Robertson all should have made it. Too bad they got robbed but in the big picture, the 3 days off is probably more important anyway.

  • Crime Dog

McCutchen isn’t even on the final vote ballot? Holy crap

    • Pat D

A fucking travesty. The guy is a superstar in waiting who deserves to be seen, and this sucks.

      • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

It’s because he plays on the Pirates. He gets no attention.

  • Zack D

I’ll laugh if Washington bats Jeter 9th

  • Kevin D.

I hope McCutchen goes on an FU rampage after the ASB.I do not remember a bigger snub than this.

  • Notorious Mofo

CC not being picked is a joke. And Venters over Kimbrel is also a joke. Managers are as bad as players with their picks. And the one player from every team needs to be dropped. Aaron Crow is an all star but not CC.

    • Pat D

This is seriously the first time I’ve agreed with dumping the team requirement.

Last year Girardi got criticized for not taking Weaver, then he named Weaver as a replacement even though he couldn’t pitch due to the Sunday before rule. Maybe Washington will get pressured to do that this year, we can only hope.

      • Zack D

        Dump team requirement.
        Dump deciding home-field.
Dump selecting guys to replace guys to replace guys to replace guys so you don’t have 50 “all-stars” per league.

    • Kevin D.

Both Venters and Kimbrel are amazing relief pitchers and they both deserve to attend the AS game. That being said I would have to say that Venters is the better pitcher.

    • Hall and Nokes

Venters over Kimbrel is weird but understandable, as Venters has been the better pitcher in most respects.

Brian Wilson over Kimbrel is lame.

  • Hall and Nokes

    The Yankee Clippard made it!

    But Jeff Karstens didn’t.

    Neither did Darrell Rasner.

  • Bavarian Yankee

guys like CC and Robertson (probably) weren’t selected because EVERY team has to have at least 1 player on the All-Star team and that takes away a few roster spots. That’s the only reason why a guy like Brandon League makes the All-Star team. Robertson is a borderline All-Star because he’s “just” a middle reliever but hell, CC HAS to be an All-Star, the stats prove that.

  • It’sATarp

CJ over CC, Valverde over D-rob, Michael Young over uhhh well i can give you a whole list of people….yea pure ridiculous.

  • Hall and Nokes

Why does the AL need a backup DH? Are they playing AL rules in Arizona?

  • Chris

Tex not being invited is a travesty!

  • Mister Delaware

Joe Torre thinks not enough Giants and Rangers were selected.

  • sean

cc should be an all star…thats not right who is in charge of making that decision?
