Game 105: Nova’s Back

By

(AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

The Yankees already have one win to their credit today, and now they’re welcoming Ivan Nova back to the rotation for the night cap. Joe Girardi indicated earlier this week that Nova could be up for more than just the spot start, though a trade is always possible as well. The Rockies have a scout in the stands tonight as the Ubaldo Jimenez talks go down to the wire. Either way, Nova’s job is to help the Yankees win tonight. Here’s the starting nine…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, DH
Andruw Jones, RF
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, 3B
Brett Gardner, LF

Ivan Nova, SP

The game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Roster Move: To make room for Nova on the roster, the Yankees have sent Chris Dickerson back to Triple-A. He won’t be able to come back up for ten days, but I imagine the Yanks will just call up Greg Golson tomorrow. Either that or they’ll roll with a 13-man pitching staff for a week and a half (no thanks).

Orioles Trade: The Yankees haven’t made a trade yet, but Baltimore has. Between games they dealt super(setup)man Koji Uehara to the Rangers for the hacktastic Chris Davis and the festively plump Tommy Hunter. So no Koji tonight if the game is close in the late innings. Good news for the Yankees, and I think that’s a pretty nice trade for both teams.

Nova’s pitching tonight for one last hurrah in the stadium. By this time tomorrow he will likely be a Rockie. As our 4th best starter this season he never should have been sent down and now he will be traded away. Last game in pinstripes means CGSO for Ivan Nova.

    • Steve (different one)

not for nothing, but didn’t the yankees HAVE to use july to evaluate what they had in Hughes? seems like a weak complaint. if you don’t know where Hughes is at, how do you evaluate your need at the deadline?

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

Any word if the Yankees have a scout in Colorado tonight?

    • JohnnyC

      Bill Livesey.

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

    Errr…San Diego.

  • Phife Dawg

Kuroda isn’t waiving his NTC. Look like Cash is going to have to go all in for Ubaldo.

    http://twitter.com/#!/CBSSport.....2210679808

  • Pat D

Seems like the Rangers essentially gave up on Davis and Hunter, no? Not saying that was a bad thing, but just that they didn’t have spots for them anymore.

Also, with Kuroda saying he ain’t departing (/Templeton’d), what chances do you all think the Yankees cave and do the deal for Jimenez? I say 60% right now.

    • Phife Dawg

I might even say 75% Cashman pulls the trigger for Ubaldo, now with Kuroda off the market and Boston, Indians, and the Reds clamoring his service. I just hope he doesn’t panic and rush things or do anything stupid.

    • RIP Irabu

Theres always the bungarner route and just call up manny for the playoffs

    • Brooklyn Ed

maybe Cashman will pull off a ninja move for Danks?

    • Jack Merridew

Nova’s getting squeezed. Induce a groundball and get out of the jam. Do the damage control that AJ and Hughes are unable to do and you will stay in the rotation.

  • Brooklyn Ed

TroyRenck: Ubaldo is in clubhouse. Still pitching :)

  • Brandon

All you guys stressing that Nova is leaving. Stop. You really think the Yankees are going to package even one of Montero, Betances and Banuelos for a pitcher who has slammed back down to earth since the 1st half of the 2010 season? Come on people, dont be like the Rockies. Use your brains!

    • YankeesJunkie

Considering the K/9 and BB/9 rate have not changed from last year and his FIP improving every month this season has crashed down to earth for a pitcher that will still accumulate 4 fWAR season. Heck, how is even still on the Rockies.

  • A.D.

Interested on people’s thoughts, would you want to do Dellin, Montero & Nova for Ubaldo?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I get the feeling that they can get him for less. The Rockies already dropped their price once (that we know of), there’s still another 21 hours to make them drop it even more.

      • A.D.

Agreed, I mean the fact he’s available at all makes it seem they’re inclined to move him more that teams are will to blow the farm

      • CP

They dropped it to that (Dellin, Montero & Nova), right?

If they’re already there, then it will certainly come down more. Likely swap a Warren or someone similar for Betances or Nova.

    • Brandon

Nope. The asking price was the galaxy with Banuelos. Without him, its the earth and the moon and some stars.

I wish people can stop going by a half a season, especially when its not the season we are in…

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I wish I people would stop acting like he’s got a 6.00 ERA aside from the first half of last year.

        • A.D.

He’s been pretty good since 2008

        • IRF

          Last 365 days

          32 GS, 202.1 IP, 204 K, 81 BB, 13 HR, 3.83 ERA

          • Betty Humpter

            Sign me the fuck up.

            • IRF

Yeah, me too. The walks are higher than I’d like, but how many guys can strike out a batter an inning?

If thats the guy he is for the next 3 years, thats terrific. Very 2008- AJish. (And I mean that in a good way.)

          • Brandon

Since June 23rd of last season, 242.1 IP 115 ER 4.27 ERA

From June 23rd to the end of last season, he had a 4.34 ERA. So far this season, he has a 4.2 ERA.

Not saying he cant be better, just saying a half a season should not blind peoples opinions. In reality though, it was 2 months. He ended May 2010 with a .78 ERA. He ended June with a 1.83 ERA.

    • YankeesJunkie

Probably, but if the Yanks can lower the price on Montero or Dellin it will make it that much easier.

  • joe

is it just me or is YES using a different camera angle from behind the pitcher?

  • Justin

    Nova throwing hard, 96

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I really wish Kenny could pbp every game…

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Surprise surprise, Ivan Nova still can’t miss a bat.

    • YankeesJunkie

He is an invaluable asset that the Yankees should not trade for Ubaldo who has pitched like shit for the last decade!

      sarcasm’d

    • Mojo

. . . And you’d rather have Hughes? I’m confused. Seems to me that SuperNova would be the lesser of two evils.

  • King George

@TroyRenck: Rox in serious talks w Indians. Hearing would center around pomeranz Alex white and kipnis
    8 minutes ago

    • Sarah

Dislike very much. Surely Cashman can do better than that.

      • Steve (different one)

Can he? What’s a comparable Yankee package?

        • Steve (different one)

I guess I should say “should he?” Don’t know enough about the Cleveland guys.

    • IRF

If thats true, thats a significantly better offer than anything the Yanks would give up.

    • Brandon

I dont want Jimenez for the price, but I just have to say this. I guess the Indians didnt get the memo that they also need to put the bat on the ball. Not just pitch. They need more than just Jimenez to have a chance…

  • nick

Jesus mad, RBI line-drive single in Rochester :-P

    • Devon

Off the end of the bat over the first basemen head. Not really a line drive.

      • nick

on milb. gameday it said line drive, so thanks I didnt see it.

  • nick

    Gardner is so effin good

  • teddy

    thank you gardner

  • Jetrer

    thank grit for that

    • Monteroisdinero

Could Grandy have caught Vlad’s line drive the same way? More aggressive with a dive?

      • Jetrer

not sure, but probably not worth the risk in that situation

  • Jack Merridew

Good job by Nova there with the damage control. He was getting squeezed but induced the flyball to his best defender. Nice work.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

That was a hard hit liner. If Gardner wasn’t in left, it’s 2-0 O’s.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yeah that wasn’t a fly ball. That was a pure line drive. That’s not a repeatable skill, Nova’s not fooling anyone, which is pretty common for him.

      • Kevin G.

It seems like everyone’s excessive love for Nova is making you hate him

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened.

        • Justin

Mike has always seemed to have an anti-Nova vibe.

          • YankeesJunkie

People have been overrating Nova more than dogging him because he does have a 95 mph FB. Fact of the matter is that he does not miss bats with a 5 K/9 and walks a lot batters at 3.75 BB/9 and probably is no better than a 4/5 starter guy which is fine.

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

Yeah I won’t miss this guy.

    • YankeesJunkie

He is back end starter in the AL East, but he could probably go up to #3 on some NL teams.

  • Brandon

I should probably say that I would take Jimenez. Just not for Montero, Betances or Banuelos. Id do anyone else though.

    • V

Betances+Nova+Warren+Romine+Joseph would be a steal for the Yanks.

      • Monteroisdinero

This I would do and I like Nova.

  • Monteroisdinero

    Wieters looking worse than Montero!!

  • King George

Ubaldo to Cleveland. About to get scratched from his start.

    • A.D.

Indians scratched Pomeranz and White today, and given Nova is pitching right now seems they aren’t that close

    • Sarah

      Sucks.

    • Jack Merridew

And that’s the risk you run when you walk away and say we aren’t dealing any of our best prospects. If Cashman doesn’t get us another starter he might as well resign.

    • YankeesJunkie

Yankees missed out IMO, but the trade deadline does not end till 4 pm tomorrow. Montero better be up on August 1 though.

  • Betty Humpter

I’m just saying, if you’re going to throw Nova in a possible trade for Ubaldo, you’d better get a bucket of balls back in the deal. Didn’t you see his ability to get hard line outs?

  • Monteroisdinero

Swish with the Baltimore chopper and doesn’t pull a hammy.

    Nice.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I thought Buck Showalter’s magic powers prevented such errors?

    • Delaware – Ralph

At the game, was swisher safe at first?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Andruw Jones is pretty awesome.

    • Betty Humpter

He has a smile for the ages.

  • Cy Pettitte

RT @SI_JonHeyman: ubaldo was scratched. looks like a deal. #rockies, #indians

    wat.

    • Sarah

Is Cashman planning to pitch himself now? Because this was plain stupid.

    • YankeesJunkie

Indians were willing to give up prospects while Yankees were not.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    LOLrioles.

  • Steve (different one)

well this game is going swimmingly…

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Cashman “infuriated” the Rox…

    http://twitter.com/#!/Joelsher.....6044475392

    • Cy Pettitte

lol @ Hughes + lower prospects for Ubaldo

      that’s insulting.

    • King George

      Cashman = fucking idiot

      • Cy Pettitte

he’s one cheeky mother fucker, that’s for sure.

      • Wooderson

lets hear you say that when jesus is raking in 2015 and ubaldo’s 3 years of 4+ ERA on the indians is over.

    • Jack Merridew

lol, he wouldn’t even offer Nova? What a joke. Resign, Cashman.

    • Jetrer

if that’s true, Cash should be fired
I can see trying to get him without any of the top three (even that is ridiculous), but to refuse to give up a fifth starter for Jiminez, I would have told Cash to fuck off as well

  • Jack Merridew

Plenty of runs for Nova who just wins ballgames. If spotted a 12 run lead I doubt Nova will struggle to get through the 5th inning as was the case with another Yankee starter on this homestand.

    • Jetrer

Hughes had a horrible start that day. His career is obviously over. Nova will always be much better than Hughes.
/sarcasm (in case you could not tell)

  • King George

How sad. Yanks really blew it. Well done, Cashman. Regardless if you believe the rumors or not, he could have at least been willing to let some prospects go. But, he was stubborn just like he was with Arizona and it bites him in the ass again. If you really think the Yankees will win the World Series with this rotation, then I want your potion. Sorry to go on a mini-rant here, but Cashman has fucking failed regardless of if you wanted Ubaldo specifically or not. He hasn’t done shit for the team as of now. Granted, there’s another 20 hours left until the deadline, but my confidence isn’t sky high…

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Am I the only one here who actually prefers keeping Montero and Betances and/or Banuelos?

    • Sweet Dick Willie

He hasn’t done shit for the team as of now.

If assembling the team with the 3rd best record in MLB qualifies as “hasn’t done shit”, well then I guess you’re right.

      • Wooderson

just because they (probably) wont win this year doesnt mean theyre not (much) better set up for the future. fuck nova though.

  • http://Www.or.ly JM

The Indians are ruining EVERYTHING! At least the Yankees are pwnzerizing.

  • V

    “Joelsherman1 Joel Sherman
#Yankees took all #Rockies wanted off table – Banuelos, Betances, Montero, Nova – and offered Hughes and others. #Rockies infuriated

#Yankees were trying to sell their trouble RH Hughes plus for #Rockies troubled RH, but Rox don’t see Ubaldo as troubled at all”

If this is true, Cashman is fucking insane. Nova was off the table? For realz? For fucking Ubaldo? What???

If this is true, fire the asshole and replace him with an adult who can conduct business like a sane adult.

    • King George

We just lost the World Series in July. Well done, Cashman. Well fucking done, you asshole.

      • Wooderson

this is why i hate yankee fans.

  • mbonzo

This deal the Indians are sending the Rockies is not even close to Montero+Betances+Novas imo. 3 mid 100 prospects are different than 1 major league proven starter, top 5 and top 40.

    • V

Nova is not a ‘major league proven starter’. He’s Jeff Karstens.

Montero is better than anything in the Indians deal, but Pomeranz = Betances (very close in prospect ratings, and Pomeranz = lefty). White is a top 50. If Kipnis is in the deal, excellent for Rockies (they need 2B AND 3B), if not, it’s an ok haul, but Yanks could have beaten it.

  • iloveyoubartolo

    Poor kid.

  • Cy Pettitte

    heyoooooooooo gardy

  • YankeesJunkie

For those that thought Hughes was a comparable replacement for a prospect from MLBTR.

The Yankees infuriated the Rockies by taking their top prospects off of the table and offering Phil Hughes and others instead, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter).

    • Mojo

      Hahaha. I’d be insulted too.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Sherman’s great at embellishing stuff. He probably threw ‘infuriated’ in for effect.

      • King George

It doesn’t matter at this point. Bottom line: Cashman really blew it.

        • ItsATarp

          only in your mind

        • Pasqua

That’s just an assinine thing to say.

        • Jim S

Get. the fuck. over it. wow.

      • YankeesJunkie

Probably, but there were a lot people thing Hughes could replace one of the prospects.

  • Mojo

Oh boy . . . Jeter with the bases loaded? Hmmm

  • Wooderson

lol if jeter GIDPs here and makes all three outs in the inning

  • Cy Pettitte

Cap’n! this inning is fucking awesome.

  • Brooklyn Ed

    John Danks, come on down???

  • Johnny Nitro

Kiss our collective asses, Buck. Fuck you.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat
    • mbonzo

      Here comes Jesus me thinks.

  • A.D.

No Haren last year and no Ubaldo this year is dissappointing

    • King George

      Thank Brian Cashman.

  • A.D.

No Haren last year and no Ubaldo this year is disappointing

  • http://Www.or.ly JM

I am legitimately frustrated at Cashman for this one. To negotiate is one thing, but you have to be realistic. Cash better have something up his sleeve…

    • King George

      Probably not.

    • Adam

Will probably be similar to last year, someone smaller parts after before the waiver deadline.

    • Pasqua

But you have no concept of what really went down. Just because we hear “this and that” does not mean that A) it’s accurate; or, B) that there aren’t more factors outside of what is being reported. If there is one thing that Cashman has shown in his years here it’s that he makes prudent moves; rarely, if ever, does he overpay. He gets what he wants for what he wants to give. Doesn’t mean everything works out in the end, but, man, give the dude some credit for his approach.

  • karel capek

Fantastic, we get the return of the two man all star team of Singleton and Con….wait O’Neil? That man does not look like Buster Keaton! David Cone does! The Yankees are winning by a lot! Trade stuff! Trade David Byrne for a pillar of salt!

    http://www.skwurl.com/sa/sameasiteverwas.gif

  • Mojo

I really didn’t notice it all that much until I read an article about it, but damn, Granderson DOES strike out an awful lot

  • Cy Pettitte

this is probably one of the best double headers ever.

  • mbonzo
  • Jack Merridew

If Ivan Nova is so untouchable then why is he banished to AAA and Hughes is the one Cashman wanted to dump? Even if Nova shuts these guys out today he’s still going back to AAA which is ridiculous. Cashman cost us a trip to the WS last year and hasn’t done shit again this year.

    • Adam

You know, outside of put together a really successful baseball team.

  • Kevin D.

I love what Cashman did. He basically paid O’Dowd back for selling Ubaldo to them at an inflated price. At the end of the day we get to keep our prized prospects for the time being and that sounds great to me.

    • YankeesJunkie

Montero is a prized prospect. Betances is a huge upside prospect and Nova is a back end starter. You have to pull that trigger for a #2 starter for 2.5 years.

      • Kevin D.

        What happened to Manban?

    • Wooderson

      fuckin A, man. fuckin A.

      • Wooderson

can somebody PLEASE post a side by side comparison of andino’s pictures

  • CBean

Well at least the Yankees have found the offense they were missing last night.

    • Mojo

Isn’t that always the case, though? Show up HUGE for a few games and then disappear for several?

  • Monteroisdinero

Buck’s face getting redder and redder.

  • mbonzo

Drew Pomeranz, Alex White and Matt McBride supposedly.

Montero, Betances, Nova is much better in my opinion.

    • Cy Pettitte

Drew Pomeranz, Alex White and Matt McBride is however better than Hughes.

      • ItsATarp

I can live without Ublado. Haren, Greinke, Hallady and Lee were all better pitchers and all went for less.

  • Adam

And t-minus how many seconds before Buck starts plunking batters?

  • Cy Pettitte

lmao at the up close shot of Buck.

  • Cy Pettitte

SWISH!!!!!!! this is too fucking good.

  • mbonzo

Wow this is one insane inning.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Buck wants to run away to the clubhouse…

  • Alex S

    L O FUCKING L

  • Jack Merridew

Nova has now been given the same lead Hughes was given vs the As. Let’s see if Nova can manage to at least get through 5 innings and not give up 7 runs.

    • Jetrer

We get it already. You hate Hughes and love Nova.
One start does not make a career. Nova has already pretty much reached his ceiling. Hughes still has a chance to be better.

      • Jetrer

and Hughes lead was not 12-0 anyways, it was 12-2
not that that means anything, it just seems to be a big deal to you

    • Pasqua

      Sucks to your Hughes-mar!

  • Charles

    BEST…INNING…EVER

  • YankeesJunkie

The worst thing about the non trade is that the Yankee fans will clamor for CJ Wilson at the end of the year.

    • Donny

      Worst thing?

IMO, C.J. > Ubaldo. Plus he only costs cash…

  • Kevin D.

P.S I think we should start putting in subs.

  • Cuso

    Jaizus!

  • mbonzo

    How long has Nova sat?

  • Frank

This pretty much guarantees the Yanks won’t hit a lick tomorrow.

  • Reggie C.

Perhaps the Rox never backed down from their Banuelos demands which would’ve frustrated any movement at all. The talks probably hit an impasse.

If CLE is willing to cough up Pomeranz and Alex White (isnt he on the DL?) … Cashman wasnt going to elect to beat that.

    • Adam

It is very annoying to listen to people kill Cashman as if we have an idea what the Rox were actually demanding. But, you know, since he has so little success as a GM and all…blah.

No matter what makes a trade happen elsewhere we never really know what happens in discussions, who the Rockies were interested in, who they value and who they don’t.

    • mbonzo

Respectivly, they were ranked #61 and #47 this offseason. Yankees had 4 players ranked higher, and 2 ranked lower. It was definitely beatable. I also get the feeling this deal isn’t official yet because they want a last word with Cashman.

      • Reggie C.

Pomeranz is probably a top 25 prospect right now. He cruised right through Hi A. Banuelos has more AA starts , but I wonder if the Rox view Pomeranz as somebody who could make the rotation out of ST. Pomeranz has 3 years of college ball.

  • Justin

12 runs in the first inning, Paul and Ken in the booth, no Michael Kay…for all the people whining about Ubaldo, I’m enjoying being a yankee fan right now.

  • Jimmy McNulty

The choices for the Text poll are not mutually exclusive.

  • Dela G

Damn, what an awesome inning. What an ass kicking

  • Cy Pettitte

    #shutdowninning

  • Adam

PS, I live outside of D.C. so am watching the MASN broadcast of the game…very entertaining to hear the depression in Gary Thorne’s voice.

    • rbizzler

As someone who spent 4+ years living in DC and listening to Thorne call Yanks-O’s games as if they were playing game 7 of the WS, I can only chuckle at your report.

    • Monteroisdinero

      At least no Palmer….

  • mbonzo

Hold your horses, Ubaldo is starting.

    http://twitter.com/#!/TracyRin.....4204609537

  • Jimmy McNulty

I was wanting to deal a Betances/Nova headed package and keep Montero and Banuelos. I think there are packages that the Yankees could have offered that excluded Montero and Banuelos that would top the Indians package, however, that didn’t appear to be what Colorado wanted. Ugh…I’m pissed about this but there’s not really a proper place for me to direct my anger. Cashman really didn’t do anything wrong, my only question is why were Nova and Betances off the table? Betances has trouble after the fifth inning and Nova’s the king of mediocrity…what’s so special about those two? In three years they’ll probably both be relievers.

  • Brandon

So the Indians deal will be White, someone else and a PTBNL(Pomeranz) for Ubaldo? Meaning the Indians get to keep Pomeranz for another 2 weeks. What if he gets hurt? The Rockies would be screwed then.

    • IRF

What if he gets hurt in 3 weeks as a member of the Rox? They would still be screwed.

  • Jetrer

helmet stayed on all the way past second base that time

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

so will we see an O’s position player pitch?

  • Brandon

Hah! Looks like Ubaldo was traded, then not traded, sor of like what happened to Hunter Pence on Thursday night. Told he would be pulled since he was going to be dealt. But wasnt pulled. Ubaldo was scratched, but he is now the started again for COL.

  • Cy Pettitte

    15-0 looooooooooool

  • Adam

    Two touchdowns up!

  • Jack Merridew

This game ain’t ever gonna end. 30 runs is possible.

  • Cy Pettitte

Post has learned that #Yankees asked #Rockies 4 datys ago to do physical on Jimenez if deal agreed to, Col refused, so Yanks bowed out

    http://twitter.com/#!/Joelsher.....6813960193

ahhhhh so now we see why he’s being moved

    • Kevin D.

Thank Mo for Cashman trying his best to prevent the Yanks from being fleeced.

      • Justin

-Gasp- you mean Cashman was thinking logically even as everyone here was calling him a moron?

        • Adam

It’s almost as if he is really good at his job and not a complete idiot who tries to sabotage the Yankees’ chances…

    • King George

Sherman just said that this may be the reason why the Indians deal is being held up. Interesting.

    • Phife Dawg

Hmmm. That’s rather shallow and pedantic.

    • mbonzo

Why would the Rockies refuse a physical unless there was something wrong with him?

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

        Exactly what I was thinking.

        • mbonzo

There could be something I’m missing, but it makes no sense to me unless they wanted to get a team caught up in a trade with them and then forced into agreeing to it after the trade deadline.

    • Sarah

We don’t know any of this to be true, trade or no trade, physical or no physical. I’d be a little surprised if the Rox flat out refused, and if they do it again, then we know something’s up.

Maybe there’s something else going on here.

      • A.D.

But if there is something wrong that they know about their can be major issues for them down the road, really doesn’t make sense

        • Sarah

          True. Absolutely.

  • http://Www.or.ly JM

Glimmer of hope with the Ubaldo thing not being quite done yet.

  • Steve (different one)

That was an awesome story about Russel Martin and Matt Wieters.

These are the kind of heart-warming nuggets we’ll have to cling to now that the season is officially over.

    • Wooderson

hey fuck you i’ll cling to them NOW

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    20 runs

  • Karl Krawfid

Damn Jones has been hitting some hard shots.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Andruw Jones can hit a ball as far as everyone. That’s some serious power.

  • Mojo

Yeah . . . I think I’m liking me some Andruw instead of Posada.

  • Cy Pettitte

    holy shit

  • Jimmy McNulty

I mean…most of the critiques of Cashman are completely ill-thought out, but why the fuck are Nova and Betances off the table? Srsly. I think that’s a fair question to ask, I’m sure he had his reasons, and with the revelations of Colorado refusing a physical…but still Ubaldo’s thrown 640 innings from 2008-2010, and thrown 122 this season, I’d still be willing to include Betances and Nova for that.

    • iloveyoubartolo

      Really?

  • King George

I wouldn’t mind seeing Andruw become the permanent DH. Not gonna lie.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

He’s really been heating up. Thames-esque.

    • Mojo

There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Say it loud, say it proud, say it with gusto!

    • Jetrer

Posada is still better v RHP
If they finally make a change I’d much prefer Montero

  • mbonzo

New drinking game, everyone takes a shot when a Yankee broadcaster talks about trading for Felix Hernandez.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I wonder what Matt does during games like this…

  • Jimmy McNulty

Ubaldo’s thrown a pitch, so it looks like the deal to the Tribe is definitely off.

    • Phife Dawg

Looks like they got a reliever warming up.

  • Karl Krawfid

    20 runs lets do dis

  • Dela G

Wow what a day for Robbie cano

  • Karl Krawfid

The box score looks on this game looks insane.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Ubaldo sucking against the PADRES

    • Cy Pettitte

      do not want.

  • Dela G

The yanks showing mercy, holding granderson

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

If they don’t score 25, I will be pissed.

  • Some Guy

Bases loaded and they can’t score. Typical Yankees.

    • Mojo

I’m sure you’re kidding, but I do agree with this statement wholeheartedly.

  • Mojo

Okay . . . Now can I have Montero catching? Love Martin (as an individual) but that .226 line has been old for quite some time now. What reason is there to not bring Montero up? Once August hits, what will be the excuse?

  • Pasqua

Here’s my ‘gut’ take on Ubaldo: I know the dude can pitch, but the news that he’s allegedly going to Cleveland causes me to feel not one teeny, tiny bit of frustration or concern. For all his ability, he’s not a guy (at this point) that would give me pause if the Yankees faced him in the postseason (unlike, say, Cliff Lee, who scares the ever-living shit out of me as a pitcher). I see no reason why we can’t beat him, every time we face him. I realize he COULD certainly shut us down on any given day, but I certainly wouldn’t EXPECT him to. I’m sure he could have helped us, but this doesn’t break my heart, to say the least.

  • Brian S.

We only win when we hit home runs.

  • Cy Pettitte

4 walks and 4 runs so far

    Nobaldo

    • mbonzo

He looked a little better at the end of the inning, maybe stopping and starting his warmup hurt him.

  • ItsATarp

With the way the Rockies are handling this Ublado deal, i’m not surprised Cashman told them to shove it.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

This whole thing is weird. But all this stuff about Colorado saying no to physical is very sketchy. Pre-trade physicals are routine.

  • Cy Pettitte

Ubaldo’s gone, hugs and hand shakes in the dugout.

  • Pat D

If I were Cashman right now, I’d call up Seattle and say, “Montero, Banuelos, Betances, Nova, Nunez and another position player for Felix and Adam Kennedy. What say you?!?”

    /amijoking?’d

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I love the Adam Kennedy throw-in.

      • Pat D

Well, if we’re gonna trade Nunez, we need someone to platoon with Chavez and back up the middle until ARod is back. I mean, why not?

    • ItsATarp

No deal unless they throw in Dustin Ackley in as well!

    • Pasqua

My source, very familiar with the Mariners, believes that Felix can be had for Derek Jeter and Playstation 3.

Granted, my source is my 9-year-old cousin, Jimmy, who lives in Seattle, but still…

  • Cy Pettitte

    Hughes in the pen? wtf?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Today is his throw day between starts, I think they just held him back in case they needed the extra arm during the doubleheader. Probably just getting his work in now.

  • mbonzo

Hughes in the pen? Please don’t be what I think it means.

    • Mattchu12

What do you think it means because I’m baffled. . .unless it means that Nova is going to be traded?

      • mbonzo

I’m afraid of Joba 2.0, Mike just said on twitter that he thinks they held him back on his throwing day. That makes more sense.

        • Mattchu12

Oh god, don’t even say that.

    • Chucky

      Is Nova getting traded?

    • Pasqua

Isn’t it probably Hughes’s throw day? Also, Nova’s nearing 80 pitches as is coming off an injury. His day may be done soon, regardless.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Poor Phil

  • Mojo

Was that the first 1-2-3 inning for the Yankees?

  • Pasqua

How can you NOT give this kid a chance, Paul? Age and options, my friend. Age and options. While Garcia and Colon pitch like golden geese, Nova’s gonna draw the short straw, methinks.

  • Kevin D.

Solid start from Nova. He has certainly improved on finishing batters off this year.

  • Cy Pettitte

Harden to the Red Sox, ugh.

    • Kevin D.

Damn, they just keeping adding to that endless rotation full of aces.

      • brazilian fan

but it seems they traded their all star first baseman Lars Anderson, one of the greatest prospects of all time

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Who cares? He’ll be on the DL in a week or two.

    • ItsATarp

More pitchers they can send to the DL

    • Mojo

The Sox are already the AL’s best. Did this trade make them even better?

  • Cy Pettitte

    Robbie #toomanyhits

  • Dela G

What a fucking douchebag denying those kids

  • Karl Krawfid

Andrew Jones looks like an old baby.

  • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

so the Rockies took crap players from Cleveland but wanted HUGE prospects from the Yanks? eff them

    • ItsATarp

Number 14th and 47th best prospects in baseball is hardly Crap…It’s basically Jesus and ManBan + 2 more prospects

      • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

2 unproven 22 year olds. Nova has major league experience and Montero is a stud

        • ItsATarp

being 14th and 47th of all prospects is also called being a “stud”.

        • Pat D

Nova is a 4th starter and Montero has exactly 0 major league at bats.

          See what I did there?

          • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

and Ubaldo is having his worse year ever

            • Pat D

              I wasn’t disputing that.

              • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

I’m not disputing anything…It just looks like teams always want big names from the Yanks but settle for less with other teams.

                • Pat D

I think that speaks more to you knowledge of Yankees propsects vs. all other prospects, really.

                  Moot point anyway.

                  • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

dont be a tool and get all “I know more about baseball than you” this is a YANKEE FAN site, of course Im gonna sway towards the Yanks

                    • Pat D

I’m not saying that at all.

I think you’re reading way too much into what I’ve said.

                  • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

yanks have two prospects in the top 15 and yet your gonna make an argument about 14th and 47?

                    • Hugh

No. I really think you’re reading way too much into what he said.

    • Charles

They didn’t take crap players, the just took players with way less ceiling but that are probably closer to ML ready than Betances/Banuelos

      • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

bottom line, teams always want the Yanks to give up more, then end up settling for way less. I think Cashman has a great Poker face.

        • Pat D

You seem to think the Yankees prospects are infinitely better than everyone else’s.

          • thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Im a Yankee fan, of course I think they are better…lol.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Fans of every team do this. There are people on Indians’ blogs right now bitching that they had to trade Pomeranz and White when they only asked the Yankees for Banuelos and Betances.

            • Pat D

That’s why I try not to get enamored with prospects. i’d rather retain my subjectivity.

              • Pat D

                Oops.

Objectivity. It’s been a long day.

  • Karl Krawfid

Ah jeez not this shit again.

    Who cares about Christian Lopez.

    • Pat D

It’s a human interest story here at the end of HOPE week.

      • Karl Krawfid

The stories earlier in the week were touching.

        Not this guy.

        • Pat D

It’s about doing the right thing and setting the example and blah blah blah…

    • Cy Pettitte

oh lord, they gave him a world series ring.

    • brazilian fan

      he is a nice dude

  • Brandon

Nova + a prospect for 1 or Thornton, Adams, Storen or Clippard. Get it done, Cashman.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They don’t need anymore bullpen help.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Well, that’s not true, let me clarify: they need rotation help more than bullpen help, and trading Nova for a reliever is not prudent.

        • Brandon

Mike, you feel confident in Soriano, Ayala Wade, Noesi, Logan, Robertson and Mo? Soriano was not good before he went on DL. Noesi can be replaced. Logan needs to go bye bye.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Uh, yeah, I feel extremely confident in their bullpen. Half of those guys will be irrelevant come playoff time anyway. Teams only use their 3-4 best relievers in the postseason.

            • CP

And even if you don’t, just put Nova in the pen. He’s cheaper and would probably be just as good as those guys.

    • Pat D

      Why?

  • Karl Krawfid

    Lol at Nunie Jones.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Can they trade Christian Lopez for Ubaldo?

    • Pat D

I’m pretty sure Christian Lopez is a lot like Derek Jeter now or Cal Ripken at the end of his career or Albert Pujols now: He’s worth a lot more to his current team than anyone else.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Kevin_NJ Kevin in Princeton

All right, I was out and completely missed this Ubaldo thing. Apparently the Yankees put up a competitive offer but the Rockies wouldn’t let him take a physical so they turned to the Indians? Am I getting all this right? Sounds very weird to me.

  • Phife Dawg

How far Lars Anderson has fallen. Remember he was supposed to be the Sox’s first basemen of the future? Good times.

    • Dino Velvet

Remember when he was supposed to be a first ballot HOFamer?

  • Cy Pettitte

Grandyslam to put us over 20 please

  • Karl Krawfid

Grandy almost killed a guy :(

    No runs :(

  • Dino Velvet

Nova makes a good case for staying in the rotation.

    • Jack Merridew

But it will fall on deaf ears. AJ Burnett is a #2 starter and Phil Hughes is the next Roger Clemens. Nevermind that Nova has outpitched both of them this season, he will be sent back down to AAA.

  • Mojo

None or one out and bases loaded is kryptonite for this Yankees’ offense.

    • Pasqua

      Oh my god…

      • Mojo

Yeah, let’s bring god into this . . . Maybe she can help.

  • Karl Krawfid

Ozzie left Bruney out to die.

    58 pitches.

  • Dino Velvet

I would take Jeter out to get treatment on his finger considering there’s a day game tomorrow, but right now, the score is so close.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They don’t have anyone else to put at short.

      • Dino Velvet

        my bad

  • Cy Pettitte

Luis Ayala, not as good as that 1.42 ERA might imply

    • Karl Krawfid

      Um of course not.

Look at the lead though. He’s just throwing strikes.

  • Cy Pettitte

MFIKY coming in for the 14 run lead save.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Teix y u so mean

  • Karl Krawfid

    Payback for hitting our players.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Let’s get 20.

  • Cy Pettitte

Patton already threw 44 pitches today, are you serious?

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Joe Torre is the o’s managar?

  • Mojo

    GRR!

  • Mojo

I seriously hope that Sori throws harder than 90 MPH.

    • Mojo

      92. I thought he had a mid-90s fastball?

  • BK2ATL

Nice quality start by Nova. 7 innings, 2 runs, 6K, 1 BB. I know it was only against the Orioles, but once he got past the 1st inning, he settled down nicely. I’d keep him around in case Hughes can’t get it together. He was and is a nice piece for the back end of the rotation.

    Applaud him.

  • Kevin D.

Looks like Soriano’s velocity has returned…

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Soriano with a 123 inning. Soriano with a 123 inning. Soriano with a 123 inning. Soriano with a 123 inning. Soriano with a 123 inning. Soriano with a 123 inning. Soriano with a 123 inning. • Pat D

      Your head a-splode.

  • Risto

And Phil Hughes took Nova’s rotation spot because why?
