Game 93: A rookie!

By

(AP Photo/Christine Cotter)

The Yankees have never faced Alex Cobb before. Well, maybe the recently recalled Brandon Laird saw him in Triple-A this season, but that hardly counts. He’s a rookie pitcher that lives off his offspeed stuff, and that usual spells certain doom for the Yankees. Tampa’s bullpen took a beating over the weekend, so now it’s time to step it up a bit and really put some pressure on them in the first game of a four-game set. Please, no flailing at changeups. Here’s the starting nine…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Russell Martin, C
Brett Gardner, LF
Eduardo Nunez, 3B

The game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

Rays Moves: Tampa made a series of roster moves before the game today. Juan Cruz and third catcher Jose Lobaton were both placed on the disabled list while Adam Russell was designated for assignment. In their place comes tonight’s starter Alex Cobb, left-handed Alex Torres (a starter, though I’m sure he’s here to work out of the bullpen), and catcher Robinson Chirinos, who can also play the infield. Torres came over in the Scott Kazmir trade, Chirinos for Matt Garza.

    Cruz on the DL?

He certainly didn’t look hurt when finagling out of the 11th inning jam last night.

  2. Grammar Nazi says:

** “In THEIR place” not “there”

  3. Xstar7 says:

    Well, they’re screwed.

Seriously though, I hope the Yankees blow the Rays out so they can get Laird in the game in the late innings. Maybe he’ll even get an at-bat. (Unlikely, I know. But a guy can dream can’t he?)

    • mbonzo says:

It would be huge if they could blow out the Rays with this newbie pitcher and force them to deplete their bullpen. After last night I don’t think they could recover well from that over the following 3 games. Make it happen soldiers.

  4. lily says:

lol rookie. i like it. but wait that means the yankees might struggle tonight because they haven’t seen him yet! i really hope thats not the case. just hoping we pitch and get timely hits and WIN!

  5. CRotondi says:

    Cy Cobb

  6. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Happy Anniversary, Coney!

  7. Jonathan Harker says:

We’ll get to the rookie and they’ll be forced to use their overtaxed pen hurting them later in the series. They’re showing the newest make a wish segment right now and my question is, of all the people you could pick why the hell would you choose to meet and spend a day with Ron Gardenhire?

  8. David, Jr. says:

    Batting eighth, Brett Gardner.

  9. medale says:

I’d almost feel bad for the Rays if Cobb doesn’t make it past the 3rd inning tonight.

  10. Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

It really does pain me to see Jeter’s name at the top of the line-up and Gardner in the 8 spot. I legitimately got a reaction when I saw that.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Well it’s to keep Jeter from bitching. If he’s dropped to 8th this will be 30 times worse than the JoPo incident.

      • Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

If Jeter was such the selfless, team-first guy everyone makes him out to be, then he would do the right thing, walk into Girardi’s office, and give him his blessing.

Never gonna happen though. Would also make Jeter look like an idiot asking for 17mm/year on the one hand and then voluntarily dropping to the bottom of the order on the other.

        • JobaWockeeZ says:

Completely agreed but he’s like the rest of baseball. He’s got ego. Very few are in the game that’s like Grandy.

    • radnom says:

It really does pain me to see Jeter’s name at the top of the line-up and Gardner in the 8 spot. I legitimately got a reaction when I saw that.

Please try to have some perspective. If you take their current OBP averaged out over a month of ABs (lets be generous and say 110), Gardner projects to get on base 4 extra times over what Jeter would do.

      Over the whole month.

Yeah, I think Gardner should be leading off too, but its really, really, really not that big a deal. But don’t let your Jeter hate get in the way of the fact that nearly every projection based on optimizing lineups shows that the order makes very little difference.

Also, since when is it the player’s job to decide where he needs to hit in the order? Until Girardi approaches him and he says no, I have a very hard time crucifying someone for supposed clubhouse issues. Sounds like the typical ‘hes a bad teamate’ narrative we’ve heard so often with Arod.

      • Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

I don’t hate Jeter. I just think he’s old and broken down. I also don’t think your last paragraph applies to Jeter.

First, as many have noted, if Girardi just drops Jeter down it will start a huge shit storm because of who Jeter is and where he ranks in Yankee history – obviously not the same case with a ton of other people who play or have played the game. Second, even if approaching the manager is not a step that’s typically taken, for all the wonderful things we’ve heard about the selfless Jeter he would be confirming those things by stepping up and doing the right thing even if it’s not the normal thing to do – you agree that the narrative has always been that when it comes to team and what is right that Jeter is better than everyone else, wouldn’t you? Third, there aren’t many other players in MLB who are so firmly entrenched in their spot in the lineup based on reputation rather than actual performance or potential for performance, so they wouldn’t have the need to approach their manager on the issue.

        • radnom says:

you agree that the narrative has always been that when it comes to team and what is right that Jeter is better than everyone else, wouldn’t you

So you hold Jeter to an unfairly high standard because of a biased media narrative? That doesn’t seem any more fair…..

I hear what you’re saying, but the bottom line is that the lineup is Girardi’s domain. Obviously when the time comes he is going to need to handle it differently than he would with an average player, but at the end of the day its his (with input from the FO) decision when ‘the time comes’. Any shots at Jeter regarding the issue are based on conjecture, and in my opinion unfair.

          • Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

No, I do not hold him to a higher standard, that’s not accurate. What I’m trying to say is that if the narrative is to be believed, than that’s what you would expect him to do. I’m not holding him up to anything and I’m not here saying he’s an asshole for not doing so. Again, I don’t hate Jeter, but I do think the narrative of what a great, selfless, tean-first guy he is has been overdone.

Agree that ulimately the line-up is Girardi’s domain, and at the end of the day any and all blame for the line-up should fall squarely on his shoulders and no one else’s. That’s fair.

  11. Nuke LaDoosh says:

I just pulled one out. I’m ready to go at least 16 innings tonight.

  12. Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

Assuming this bluushit keeps up, if Gardner was a more emotive and assertive type of dude, the Yankees would very likely end up with a situation on their hands before the end of the season. It is complete and utter BS.

    • Nuke LaDoosh says:

Steinbrenner used to say he preferred his horses to his baseball players. It was directed at the egos of baseball players. No equine egos.

  13. lily says:

please let good aj pitch tonight! and not good aj for just 4innnings and then turn to bad aj.

  14. Uncle Mike says:

Yes, he’s a pitcher the Yankees haven’t faced before. No, this game is not a Fox or an ESPN telecast. If it were that combination, we’d be in trouble, but it’s not. So I think we’ll be all right.

  15. Nefarious says:

Someone the Yanks have never seen before… They’re doomed.

  16. Greg says:

Its time to play “Name that Shift”

  17. Mike Axisa says:

That’s one way to beat the shift.

  18. Nuke LaDoosh says:

when did nunie get traded to Tampa ?

  19. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

That shift not working makes me happy. Even if it was an error.

  20. Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

If someone told you that Tex and A-Rod would be on a combined like 0-150 homer slump which covered parts of June and July, would you have believed them? Would you have believed that could happen and the Yanks would still be virtually tied for first place?

  21. Skip says:

    http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb.....les-angels

Some interesting perspective that can be extrapolated to our Jesus situation.

  22. Xstar7 says:

    Cano just beat that out.

  23. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

So in this inning a bunt and a double play ball worked for the Yankees.

No matter how hard you try…

  24. Nuke LaDoosh says:

So pissed off to only get 1 run in the first inning last night.
So thrilled the Yanks got 1 run in the first inning tonight.
    Life is funny.

  25. Mojo says:

Damn. Right down the middle . . .

  26. Xstar7 says:

Way to get the bat off your shoulders Swish….

  27. pastadivingarod says:

    AJ’s at it again

  31. pastadivingarod says:

classic AJ give it right back in the 1st
can this guy leave soon enough

  32. Dela G says:

    grrreat start!

  33. Mojo says:

Bad AJ tonight? And just when they giftwrapped him a first inning run . . . Double steal time?

  34. Xstar7 says:

    AJ Burnett: The lead giver-upper

  35. Nuke LaDoosh says:

    facepalm

  36. Karl Krawfid says:

    Fucking scrub.

  37. Dela G says:

    8 pitches, 2 runs

  38. pastadivingarod says:

AJ or Giambi which contract was worse?

  39. Brent says:

    God…

  40. Jonathan Harker says:

    Pull this clown. He’s awful.

  41. Mojo says:

    Haha. This is pathetic.

  42. Xstar7 says:

Classic AJ. We give him a lead, then he blows up.

  43. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Noesi?

  44. pastadivingarod says:

I really believe AJ is being paid by the redsox

  45. Kostas says:

I think at this point, the AJ signing is a full on bust. He has effectively become our #5 starter behind Colon and Garcia.

Wonder if the Yankees could give him plus one AAA player to Jiminez? DFA? Is Beckett the ONLY former Marlin pitcher worth a shit?

    • Greg says:

He has a ring so that blocks the bust signing.

That spot is held for Pavano

      • King George says:

He was on the DL for TJS. Hardly an earned ring with the Marlins. If you’re talking about the ring with NYY, then sure. But he pretty much tarnished that repuation last year.

      • Kostas says:

Ramiro Pena has a ring……it means nothing when deciding that AJ is a waste and the Yankees got their one good season from him…. he is a contract signing flop.

        • Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

Has Pena pitched seven innings of one-run ball to win a World Series game for the Yanks? If not, did he do something similar?

Listen, I agree that the AJ signing is a bust and a waste of money (but it’s not mine), but let’s not get it twisted about the value he did bring to the table during the Yanks 2009 World Series run.

And, no, that one championship run does not forever immunize AJ from BUST label with the Yanks. Awful ROI. Dude sucks.

  46. Jonathan Harker says:

These guys couldn’t get a runner to 3rd base last night in 16 innings. AJ is making them look like the 98 Yankees. Pull him and bring in Noesi.

  47. Thomas Cassidy says:

I try so hard to like Burnett, but I just can’t do it.

  48. Mojo says:

Fuck. Doesn’t Upton kill the Yankees? Hopefully AJ only gives up one more run.

  49. pastadivingarod says:

Montero nova cojo and Aj Burnett for Jimenz and Wiggy

  50. King George says:

Say it with me now: U-bal-do Ji-men-ez

  51. Mickey Scheister says:

It’s the Russell Simmons necklace, everytime he wears that he’s bad AJ, there… I fixed him.

  52. Sheepmeister says:

so the ESPN announcers are saying that joe maddon’s 30 min rule (think about the game for only 30 min after the game) is the reason the rays are doing well tonight, not AJ Burnett being terrible.

    • Jonathan Harker says:

Maddon is the most overrated manager in baseball. People think he is smart. Last series people on here thought he was a genius because he put in a predominantly right handed line up against a left handed pitcher. Everybody does that! He’s an idiot.

  53. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Teixeira, that was sick.

  54. Jonathan Harker says:

If he gets out of this with just 2 runs he’ll be very lucky.

  55. Mike Axisa says:

    Wow, that was some play.

  56. Tut says:

AJ saw Colon’s last start and said “thats nothing, watch this.”

  57. Nuke LaDoosh says:

    Huge play by Tex

  58. pastadivingarod says:

I predict we will see the Experience tonight

  59. Jonathan Harker says:

Why didn’t AJ set and throw? IDIOT!

  60. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    AJ, you should kill yourself.

  61. Brent says:

    Oh good!

  62. Dela G says:

what the eff was that aj…

  63. Greg says:

That’s Tex’s fault. Gold Glovers make that play

  64. BklynJT says:

    Trade for Ubaldo NOW!

  65. Kostas says:

Good grief. Send his country ass back to Arkansas.

  66. jon says:

that was a bad throw but come on teix you can catch that

  67. pastadivingarod says:

    Strait up with the Mets
    Bay for Burnett
    both are shit contracts

  68. first time lawng time says:

    You guys are fucking idiots.

    1. He hasn’t pitched in 9 days. If CC were pitching like this on 8 days rest, you all would be saying that it’s because of the excess amount of rest.

    2. If AJ played for any other team, that fan base would appreciate him. Yankees fans are spoiled little brats that expect every pitcher be an ace.

I am so fuckin sick of the hatred toward AJ generated here. Just please shut the fuck the up.

  69. A-ROD fan says:

    Ohhh GOD

  70. King George says:

    OMG

  71. Xstar7 says:

    Beautiful, AJ. Beautiful.

  72. Nuke LaDoosh says:

tough play but looked like he may have wanted to bounce it, so he should have given Tex a better bounce. he gave him a short hop.

  73. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

AJ threw a changeup to Tex, what do you expect.

  74. Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

I woula bet my first born that Nunez was gonna throw that one away.

  75. Karl Krawfid says:

So who is the Rookie, Cobb or Burnett?

  76. Jonathan Harker says:

Right now Phil Hughes is our 2nd most reliable starter.

  77. Greg says:

Adrian Gonzalez makes that play. And I’m being very serious.

  78. wow says:

    well done stud.

  79. Tut says:

    What is there to appreciate?

  80. stuart a says:

    aj being aj.

    what a hillbilly cement head.

really how can anyone feel good about this guy and have any confidence in him. 33 year old tease…..

  81. pastadivingarod says:

Burnett will stink up the place so bad tonight that Ubaldo will be a yankee by friday.

  82. James A says:

Burnett has to trust and throw his change up, unless you’re nolan ryan its hard to be a consistently good starter with just 2 pitches

  83. Greg says:

We werent expecting to win this one anyway.

  84. Xstar7 says:

Oh god, please shave that pedo-stache Martin. PLEASE!!!

  85. pastadivingarod says:

AJ worth 3 million a year. He will out of baseball after this deal is done.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Well he’s on pace for 2 WAR which is a league average player. He’s worth a little bit more than 3 million. Which really doesn’t matter since he’s making 18 million…

  86. Guest says:

AJ is a reason NOT to trade the farm for Ubaldo.

Ubaldo is a better pitcher than AJ Burnett. I’m not arguing that.

But he’s a better pitcher in the same mold. Elite stuff. Stuff that people dream on. But sketchy control (and control that’s sketchy against the Padres and Giants will not be better against the Red Sox).

He’s worth Montero plus some other solid prospects, but I don’t think he’s a sure enough bet to warrant trading the farm.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Agreed. AJ still sucks though. Edwin Jackson come on up please!

    • pastadivingarod says:

rockies want Montero for 1st and a pitcher Nova
Since when is that the farm? They will add a lower arm like Stoneburner and it will get done. But look for them to ad Wiggy too because they want out of that contract too. They want an infielder so CoJo may go.

      • Guest says:

The farm is the Montero + Banuelos/Betances + more + more.

The Heyman rumor is that the first request was Montero + Betances + Banuelos + Nova. That’s ridiculous.

Montero, Nova, Stoneburner, and Cojo I would do.

        • pastadivingarod says:

CoJo has the talent to be another Cano

Stoneburner is a national league ground ball machine.

Montero has no position on the yanks

Nova is a National league inning eater

I do this too but only for Wiggy too

  87. pastadivingarod says:

Ok I will do a shot of Jack for every run Aj gives up tonight.
    who is with me?

  88. bonestock94 says:

    LOL what

  89. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Hector Noesi, where art thou?

  90. Jimmy McNulty says:

I think Wrestling is on a different channel tonight, incase this trend continues.

  91. Rick says:

I know it seems like batting practice, but you don’t actually have to lay a bunt down before swinging away, Johnson.

  92. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Elliot Johnson is definitely Mark Melancon in disguise..

  93. Karl Krawfid says:

Why no concern about AJ’s Velocity?

  94. Jerome S. says:

Just fucking trade for Jimenez. Not as a win-now, but as a win-in-the-next-three-years.

    • mbonzo says:

Betances, Banuelos, and Montero will probably be on the team next year and probably contributing within three years. I like a future with those 3 guys more than Jimenez. If just 1 of them becomes an elite player, they are more valuable considering money and years. Theres a decent chance that 2/3 become elite though.

    • Xstar7 says:

I like Jimenez, but I’m concerned about what he would cost. If I was Cashman, I would hang up the phone if Colorado asks for Jesus and ManBan. We’ve got to retain one of those two.

  95. Mojo says:

Can’t hear. Was that a young, rookie catcher’s first hit in his first major league at-bat? Why do the Yankees have such a fucking issue with bringing up young talent? I don’t give a shit, I want Montero. Bury his trade value, who cares. I rather have a decent bat in this lineup for several extra games than deal with a black hole in the bottom half of our lineup.

    • Sheepmeister says:

Mike Trout is hitting .125, will you give Montero any room if thats his line after his first week?

      • Mojo says:

Been looking forward to Jesus for quite some time now. So… to answer your question… Yes. Without a doubt. Plus, Jesus is the son of God, which gives him the tiniest of edges over an Angel named after a fish. It’s Jesus time. Cashman, you fucking asshole, give me what I want, damnit!

        • Xstar7 says:

The biggest (and only reasonable really) reason why they haven’t called Montero up is because they don’t think he can handle a major league staff. Nobody thinks he can catch. And this team doesn’t need another first basemen/DH.

    • The Big City of Dreams says:

Why do the Yankees have such a fucking issue with bringing up young talent?

      —————-

They don’t trust it lol. I like Martin but he has disappeared since May

  96. Guest says:

John and Susan sound like the frustrated parents of a petualent teenager.

  97. Oscar Gamble's Fro says:

The entire 24-hour narrative of the Yanks need for Ubaldo cooling after the Coach’s Son’s decent outing will need to be redone based on one quick stroke of the craptacular, again, by AJ.

  98. mbonzo says:

Anyone else have about 20% of their posts going to the spam filter and just not showing up? Quite frustrating.

  99. pastadivingarod says:

44 pitches Aj 4 inings tonight

  100. pastadivingarod says:

    SKOAL !

  101. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Upton slam

  102. Jerome S. says:

    GIVE ME SHORTSTOP WITH RAAAAAAANGE

  103. pastadivingarod says:

[Filling three shot glasses of Jack]

  104. Monteroisdinero says:

    Almost 8-1. Wow.

  105. wow says:

ok, that’s more than enough from our #2 pitcher.

  106. Jonathan Harker says:

Girardi needs to take this clown out of the game immediately. If the playoffs started today AJ would not be in the rotation. Pretty sad that a guy with a dead arm and two has beens are ahead of you.

  107. Mike Myers says:

BJ is on my fantasy team….is it wrong that I would be happy with either situation?

  108. Greg says:

Aj has been vitimized by some bad luck (Tex failing to block the ball and the infield hit) and his own wildness.

  109. Matt says:

Is anyone shocked? When you have starters going on 10 days of rest, you can’t expect them to be sharp with their control.

Girardi thinks that he’s helping his pitchers out by giving them a bunch of extra days of rest, but if you give them more than 1 or 2 days, you’re throwing them off tremendously. Burnett has not pitched since last Saturday, which is 9 days now.

I don’t understand his post all star break rotation. Keep these guys as close to being on turn as you can, with one extra day of rest at most.

  110. Greg says:

When you think about this may just be a market correction for the Rays. 0 runs in 16 innings than 4 runs in 2 innings.

I know Aj had something to do with that.

  111. Rockstar4Life says:

Is it too much to ask for some lineup adjustments? Jeter belongs nowhere near the lead off spot. And Tex is the 3 hole is just as big of a joke.

  112. Monteroisdinero says:

    Grandy swings at ball 4-bummer.

  113. Karl Krawfid says:

Joe Girardi needs to grow a pair of and change this damn lineup around.

  114. Jerome S. says:

Picked David Ortiz tonight in Picksix -_____-

  115. Guest says:

Now that is some BABIP bad luck.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

No it’s not. If there’s no shift that’s a ground ball to short.

      • Guest says:

        True.

I was more referencing the fact that the odds of Tex hitting the ball to the left side of the infield and making an out is low. Only one guy on the left side and he hit it to him.

  116. teddy says:

    all 3 outs on changeup

i would complain, but there no point

  117. Mike Myers says:

Everyone needs to stop complaining about the lineup. Its proven to make little difference. AJ sucks my ass….thats the issue. If we were up 1 – 0 this early in the game no one would complain.

  118. IRF says:

This guy isn’t particularly good at pitching

  119. Jonathan Harker says:

Why is Noesi not in this ballgame? AJ doesn’t have anything today. He can’t get anyone out and is just going to give up another run or two this inning, then it’s over.

  120. mbonzo says:

AJ might be crap tonight, but its amazing how most of the groundballs are finding holes. BABIP YOU GO TO HELL, YOU GO TO HELL AND YOU DIE!

  121. pastadivingarod says:

    and here we go
    {moves shot glasses more near for easy access}

  122. Matt says:

They have been having horrible at bats since the Mets series. Hard to hit a home run when you’re swinging at pitches in the dirt. The offense really needs to step it up during this stretch against division rivals.

If Burnett doesn’t give up any more runs, it’d be hard to blame him if they lose this game. 4 runs is hardly the end of the world, especially with a rookie without strikeout stuff on the mound. Grind out some at bats for once and rally.

  123. Guest says:

4 BBs for Dellin through 3.

    Sigh. Strikes, Dellin, strikes.

  124. wow says:

does Cashman still think we can make the playoffs with our current pitching staff? What’s that?… Now he’s saying we can win it all with this pitching staff?. Ok then.

    • Greg says:

Given the rest of the American League. Yes.

    • Mike Axisa says:

You have to complete disregard everything he says, it’s GM speak. Do you expect to come out and say “we need pitching?” If he does that, everyone’s price instantly goes up.

      • wow says:

oh I’m with ya, but frick, I’ll bet serious money that’s coming back to haunt him.

      • YankeesJunkie says:

I am hoping for the day where he says where it is necessary to have a LOOGY on the team. I will rejoice.

      • mbonzo says:

He said the same thing last year and it seemed like GMs actually believed him. Didn’t Cashman say that he was surprised the Diamondbacks didn’t approach him about Dan Haren. If you’re trying to play the, we’re good enough card, don’t be surprised when teams don’t approach you about pieces you need. He should try not saying anything to the media.

  125. Mike HC says:

Should I be excited that they just compared Hughes curveball to Kenny Powers?

  126. Mojo says:

Red Sox are superior. Even Salty, Nancy Drew, and Scooter I’d take over our guys and I’m Swisher’s #6 fan!

    • Greg says:

Drew is having an awful year.

      • Mojo says:

I know Drew’s done, just emphasizing how underwhelmed I am with our supposed vaunted lineup. Beyond Swisher and Martin, it’s Teixera, however, that really PISSES me off. Watching him at the plate now is OFFICIALLY worse than the Jeter ground out experience. I agree, lineup shuffles are in order, as well as rookie call-up.

        • Mike Axisa says:

How can you be pissed off at Swisher? He’s been killing the ball for two months now.

          • Mojo says:

I don’t know. I guess I’ve always looked at him as an extremely streaky player. He’ll have torrid bouts of colossal production only to fall off precipitously. I know how most we proclaim that players streaking is a normal phenomenon, but, let’s be honest, this team is BUILT on said streak. The only semi-consistent bat is Cano. They’re either hot or cold. I don’t recall much of a medium with this current lineup . . . And, WTF is with this unseen pitcher horse shit?! This team is not built to win it all. That’s my frank and honest analysis. I haven’t felt this way in a while and it sucks that I do now.

            • ItsATarp says:

Grandy and Arod (pre injury) has been pretty consistent..your not going to find many teams where every team hits every game…last night the sox got shutout for 15 innings

    • Rockstar4Life says:

They were superior going into this season so it’s not a surprise. They got a nice bounce back season from David Arias and they continue to win with a patchwork rotation. And they are in position to dominate the AL east for the next few years since the Yankees have far too many old guys and egos.

    • Sweet Dick Willie says:

      Nancy – 225/325/313 76 OPS+

      Swish – 255/366/416 113 OPS+

Yep. Spoken like a true Sux fan.

      • Mojo says:

        Yeah . . . I’m a Red Sox fan . . . You got me! (Sigh)

        • Sweet Dick Willie says:

Well why would a Yankees fan say that Nancy is superior to Swish?

          • Mojo says:

Swisher’s my favorite Yankee after Cano (and probably Robertson). It was basic frustration reiterating the not-so-subtle fact that the Red Sox lineup is far superior to the Yankees’. I know Drew sucks, I do, but it’s honestly quite frightening to see how good that team is, even with him in the 8-hole. I mean, fuck, even Reddick is killing the ball . . . Haha, I seriously hate to say this, but it’s like that team is simply grittier, not a bunch of overpaid, over-the-hill “superstars” slumping every other week. It pains me to say that, considering my uber hatred of both Youkilis and Pedroia, but it’s the only way I knew how to put it.

          • Mojo says:

I replied with a response, but it didn’t go through. Apparently it was reported as spam and I’m too beleaguered to rewrite it.

          • ItsATarp says:

            Because he’s a complete moron

  127. Greg says:

Even David Cone knew this was coming

  128. pastadivingarod says:

Glad Cone likes AJ cause no one in here does

  129. Guest says:

Walking Eliot Johnson, would be, bad.

  130. Nuke LaDoosh says:

This game is not over !

  131. BklynJT says:

Cano’s idea of patience is deciding to take a pitch before it’s even thrown…

    • The Big City of Dreams says:

And you can tell because the bat stays on his shoulder. It’s like he says alright let me get this out of the way. *watches first pitch down the middle for a strike*

  132. Mike HC says:

Cone calling out Yanks pitching coach again tonight for lecturing during a start. He does not pull punches.

  133. Mike Axisa says:

You know what we haven’t done in a while? The Yankees will bring the tying run to the plate in this game.

  134. Greg says:

    Damn he’s good.

  135. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    I still hate Sean Rodriguez

  136. teddy says:

another out on a changeup, there no adjustment as usual

  137. Xstar7 says:

    Fucking Sean Rodriguez.

  138. Guest says:

    Roo-kie pitch-er, clap, clap, clapclapclap.

    Nothing new under the sun.

  139. Monteroisdinero says:

Swish paid big money to jog out infield grounders. I hate being old school.

  140. mbonzo says:

    Hit one out Russ.

  141. Monteroisdinero says:

A Durham battery keeping us in check. How about our SWB battery-Nova to Montero.

  142. wow says:

unbelievable… how do these guys keep hitting right at fielders.

  143. AJ gave up four runs? I’m scared to ask how.

  144. pastadivingarod says:

Shocked Seattle hasn’t called and asked for the same 4 for Felix
that could stock the mariners back to respectability.

    • Xstar7 says:

It’s been established that the Mariners aren’t going to trade F-Her.

      • pastadivingarod says:

Those 4 players are worth it.
Montero gives them a big bat to match with the 1st baseman they got last year.
        Pinero
        Nova
        Banulos
        Betance

that is a serious future rotation even in the weak west.

        • Xstar7 says:

Tell that to the Mariners’ front office. The Yankees would definitely do this trade. If there’s anyone you’re going to sell the farm for, it’s King Felix. But the Mariners are dead set on keeping him. Plus he has publicly stated he doesn’t want to pitch for the Yankees.

    • pastadivingarod says:

CC Felix would get us wins against boston in the playoffs
      CC Ubaldo not so much.

    • YankeesJunkie says:

While Felix Hernandez they are building a nice little team in Seattle and also it would cost the farm then some.

I am thinking Gardner, Hughes, Montero, Banuelos/Betances as a jumping off point. It sounds extreme, but the trade will hurt. That is what I like about European soccer and their transfer fees and loans all it costs is money for the most part.

  145. teddy says:

then again, shouldn’t complain about the offense, when 4 of the 9 hitters suck

  146. Stratman9652 says:

AJ refuses to have an easy inning.

  147. pastadivingarod says:

83 pitches Aj in shower soon

  148. Greg says:

Once again AJ has kept us within striking distance.
That’s the difference between last year and this year.

    • YankeesJunkie says:

Agreed. Still what he has done the last two years was more expected in years 4 and 5 rather than 2 and 3.

Whatever, still going to root for him just as hard since he is on the team till 2013.

  149. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

7-6 Orioles. Let’s hope they can at least win 1/3.

  150. Jonathan Harker says:

Arod can’t get back soon enough. 1 run off Bob Cobb just isn’t going to cut it.

  151. Grit for Brains says:

I know people have done the whole lineup complaints part of the thread already, but batting your highest OBP eighth is deserving of a major face palm.

  152. Guest says:

    Brett Gardner. Leadoff hitter.

  153. JobaWockeeZ says:

Holy shit who the fuck is this guy who stole on the first pitch? That is how you do it.

  154. Hummingbird S. says:

Let’s see how Jeter fails to bring the runner home.

  155. CBean says:

    They better bring Gardner home.

  156. Mojo says:

Hopefully the clock will strike 12 for Cinderella Cobb as the Yanks turn the lineup over for a third time.

  157. Guest says:

When Gardner gets hot, he gets En Fuego.

    • YankeesJunkie says:

Brett Gardner in LF is auto average player with replacement level hitting. Thankfully, he is an above average hitter and an elite base runner.

  158. Hummingbird S. says:

    Predictable…

  159. Greg says:

    Nasty pitch

  160. ItsATarp says:

Glad we have our bestest hitter have so many Ab’s

  161. JobaWockeeZ says:

Someone should tell Jeter that his next PA he has a chance to for 3000 hits.

  162. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    That’s our leadoff hitter, folks.

  163. Mojo says:

Jeter always doing the exact opposite of what he should do.

  164. Monteroisdinero says:

    Fundamental baseball:
    1) leadoff walk
    2) stolen base
    3) grounder to right side to advance runner
    4) jeter ab

    /fundamentally flawed

  165. Greg says:

    Not in time

  166. YankeesJunkie says:

    BABIP!

  167. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I LOVE it when the shift doesn’t work.

  168. Hummingbird S. says:

    better lucky than good.

  169. CBean says:

That was just luck, but I’ll take it.

  170. Hall and Nokes says:

The shift is weak. Play straight up, like real men.

  171. Jerome S. says:

    BAbip: Corrected!

  172. teddy says:

    finally lets go cano

  173. Xstar7 says:

Thank god Tex just beat that throw. I was about to get really pissed off that he got screwed over by the shift again.

  174. CBean says:

    I miss Yankee homeruns.

  175. BklynJT says:

  176. Greg says:

  178. sangreal says:

    bad timing YES. Not cool

  179. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    WHAT happened?

  180. Xstar7 says:

What the fuck is up with YES? Is anyone else not seeing the game too?

  181. mbonzo says:

    Brown out in the stadium.

  182. Hall and Nokes says:

With 2 outs in the top 5th? Outstanding.

  183. BklynJT says:

It better not be commercial when it comes back.

  184. Zooboy says:

My guess: AJ Burnett stuck his finger in the socket.

  185. SDM says:

such a piece of shit stadium….

  186. Crime Dog says:

I think a bank of lights went out?

  187. mike_h says:

    wtf just happened???

now a commercial is playing wtf YES

  188. Jerome S. says:

    well, that was embarassing.

  189. mbonzo says:

Time was called, you guys aren’t missing anything.

  190. Xstar7 says:

I guess these commercials mean Cano made an out. Fuck.

  191. sangreal says:

Apparently power is out at the tropicana dump

  192. King George says:

Power outage at the Trop. Further proof the Trop is a piece of shit.

  193. Michael says:

Yep, ESPN said some lights went out.

  194. Monteroisdinero says:

Girardi and maddon talking to umps. Some lights out. No pitch until lights fixed. still 3-2 count

  195. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Fucking Trop

  196. Mike Axisa says:

There’s a power outage at the Trop, just pulled the teams off the field.

  197. Zach says:

Brown out at the stadium. Radio says a whole bank of lights is out. Players are off the field.

  198. Jerome S. says:

While we’re collectively bitching, what the hell is up with Twitter? does this happen often? I’m kinda new.

  199. YankeesJunkie says:

Tropicana should get hit by hurricane

  200. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I wonder if this is because of the broken light last night.

  201. Steve S. says:

    JackCurryYES Jack Curry
Brian Cashman is watching Dellin Betances pitch for Trenton tonight. Said it’s because he hasn’t seen Betances since the spring.

    Yep. No other reason.

    • boogie down says:

Heh, my boss told me today that Cash issued a statement saying he’s very happy with the way the team is presently constituted and has no plans to alter it anytime soon (or something to that effect).

This was supposed to be concrete evidence that there won’t be an Ubaldo trade; while there’s no guarantee of one actually going down, I wanted to ask, “You aren’t that dumb, are you?”

  202. Xstar7 says:

Goddammit. Tropicana field is such a piece of shit.

  203. pastadivingarod says:

AJ was so bad that he blew out the lights

  204. mbonzo says:

1 strike from an official game, if this game gets called the Rays are gonna be kicking themselves.

  205. SDM says:

Can the yankees just rent out the tampa facility park to the rays? The trop is such an embarassment to baseball

turf, shitty building, lights going out….really

  206. Chip says:

So, if the power outage goes too long and Cobb has to come out, does he get the win if Cano makes an out here?

    • boogie down says:

Nope. Five complete, and not a pitch short, that’s the rule.

      • SamWalt says:

Isn’t it ultimately at the discretion of the official scorer?

        • boogie down says:

I know that applies at some point, but not in cases similar to this, since a starter must complete 5 innings to be eligible for a win. For example:

          http://www.baseball-reference......5080.shtml

CC had 2 strikes on whichever hitter was batting in the bottom of the 5th when the game was stopped. Although he had a 6-3 lead, it was Aceves who recorded the final out in the 5th (as well as two more). It is possible, however, that the official scorer was allowed to determine the winner of the game, while having to exclude Sabathia.

  207. Mike HC says:

    hahaha, only in Tampa.

  208. Brooklyn Ed says:

power hit during Cano at bat? it have to happen during a critical moment.

  209. Monteroisdinero says:

no game for 20 minutes until electricians can fix lights

  210. Hall and Nokes says:

Joe Maddon (sheepishly): So, if we can’t complete the game tonight, you guys up for a doubleheader tomorrow?

    • BklynJT says:

They can run a straight triple header… not like they are going to lose any gates with that weak fan base.

  211. MikeD says:

Roy Hobbs arriving at the Trop.

Perhaps power will stay off and they’ll have to start from the beginning tomorrow!

  212. #24!!!! says:

Just turned on the tv in time to hear Kenny Singleton say the Trop has been hit by lightning. Really? File that under “Only at the Trop”

  213. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Javy’s fault.

  214. pastadivingarod says:

Lightning hit the trop it used to be the thunderdome when the lightning played there. It really was bbuilt as cheap as possible and the Rays have a deal to be there for another 3 years.

  215. Crime Dog says:

    Blame Javy

  216. Xstar7 says:

Grandy was telling the Rays mascot to put on his Yankees helmet. Grandy is so awesome.

  217. pastadivingarod says:

This is girardi paying back Maddon for not playing the doubleheader in NY before the break. FU Tampa.

  218. Tut says:

Waiting for AJ apologists to say he did a great job of keeping them in the game.

  219. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Power outage at the Trop. YOU GOTTA BE BLEEPIN’ ME!

  220. SDM says:

while we are waiting apparently Betances got groundballed hit to death all the while striking walking a ton of guys and striking even more out.

  221. Stratman9652 says:

Clearly Kenny has never seen Back To The Future. A bolt of lightning is 1.21 jigawatts.

  222. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Fun fact.

AJ (2008-2011): 9.8 percent of batters faced resulting in a walk. He has 42 HB and 57 WP. K/BB 2.14
    Ubaldo (2008-2011): 10.3 percent of batters faced resulting in a walk. 34 HBP 46 WP. K/BB 2.11

Now I believe Ubaldo is the superior pitcher but it’s food for thought. One also did it in the AL West and one against the NL West.

    • Mike Axisa says:

I’m sure Ubaldo’s walk rate would be better if you take out all the number eight hitters he IBB’d to get to the pitcher. Also, those are his first three years in the bigs, there’s a learning curve.

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

        Taking out the 22 IBB’s his BB% 9.5
And yes it’s only his first 3.5 seasons but even in the minors he has some control issues. He’s still young enough to improve and is quite valuable but Montero/Betances is the absolute highest you can go IMO.

        • Avi says:

If you take out Ubaldo’s intentional BB’s you have to take out Burnett’s too. It’s not like he didn’t issue ANY of them.
Like Mike said you’re banking on a learning curve with Ubaldo which may well happen. But it could just as easily NOT happen and this is the pitcher he’s gonna be.

    • Avi says:

Great stats. People are mistaken in thinking this guy is an elite pitcher. He isn’t. He’ll be like many previous Cashman starting pitcher acquisitions where the Yankees thought they were getting an ace only to end up disappointed. Such as Pavano, Burnett, Vazquez Part one & part two, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson..
I’d much rather see the Yanks go for a Kuroda, Wandy, Dempster type and keep Montero, Banuelos etc.

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

I’m jumping on TSJC’s Edwin Jackson bandwagon.

        • Avi says:

          That’ll work.
Decent starting pitching is much more abundant than people realize.
It reminds me of the 2000 season when the Yankees needed a hitter. Get the Justice not the Sosa.

  223. Xstar7 says:

Cano is going to swing at the first pitch

  224. Dank Weather Forecasts! says:

The smartest thing a potential Yankee playoff contender, other than the Phillies, could do to enhance their chances of winning is haul up their entire Single A pitching staff and insert them into the rotation with instructions to throw nothing but change-ups and fastballs. The Yankees would be completely flummoxed.

  225. Mister Delaware says:

No one better than Cano to have to start a PA at 3-2.

  226. Jerome S. says:

Went over to DRays Bay, to see their reactions on this. Someone said that St. Pete thinks the Trop is good indefinitely, just root for a hurricane.

  227. Chip says:

    Well that was anticlimatic

  228. Nuke LaDoosh says:

i don’t even know how to describe this experience.

  229. pastadivingarod says:

Its like the Kingdump Part 2

  230. Xstar7 says:

AJ just can’t have an easy inning can he?

  231. pastadivingarod says:

    Just go get him girardi

  232. King George says:

    Fucking Jorge. You suck balls.

  233. mbonzo says:

    I’m getting tired of Posada.

  234. Tut says:

    Horrible at bat Posada

  235. Xstar7 says:

Damn it Jorge, that’s Jeter’s job!

  236. Chip says:

That was the slowest developing double play of my life

  237. Hummingbird S. says:

    shitty offense is shitty.

  238. Monteroisdinero says:

Was that Posada dp in Yes-Mo?

  239. Jake H says:

I can’t wait for Posada to be off this team.

  240. Matt says:

No approach from these hitters. The most obvious double play situation in the world, and Jorge thinks he’s getting a first pitch fastball from a guy who has thrown almost 50% splitters? Not to mention, the pitch was way out of the strike zone to begin with.

  241. Hummingbird S. says:

Montero needs to be up with this team, he can’t be worse than some of those guys.

  242. Jonathan Harker says:

Tough to win ballgames when you’re down to 4 quality hitters in your lineup- Grandy, Cano, Swisher, Gardner. And Gardner can’t get above 8th in the lineup. Teix hitting .240, Posada .224, Martin .220. Just awful.

  243. Brandon says:

I said it once and I said it again. Jorge adds absolutely nothing to this team. Experience, you say? This whole team is experienced besides Nunez, Noesi and Wade. He needs to retire already. It is well past his time at this point. Sure Montero may not be doing great right now, but bring him up already. That bat is more than ready at this point.

  244. Hummingbird S. says:

Good move by Girardi. He was done.

  245. Cuso says:

    GTFO A.J.

  246. YankeesJunkie says:

    Hector Noesi!

  247. Bartolo's Colon says:

I find this to be funny. the headline on espn mlb is “As Bad As It Gets: A.J Burnett is behind again against the Rays, contuining a season-long trend.” i wonder if they have similar headlines for lackey, maybe “a gritty competitor whether he’s ahead or behind”

  248. CMP says:

14 baserunners in 5.1 innings tonight and an error to boot. Fine game by AJ.

I can’t wait to hear someone say he kept the Yankees “in the game” tonight.

  249. Hummingbird S. says:

Noesi with no command at all..

  250. Xstar7 says:

BJ is getting a second shot at getting a grand slam.

  251. Stratman9652 says:

    The hell was that Russ?

  252. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Yay Noesi.

  253. King George says:

Could be a huge point in the game.

  254. Mike Axisa says:

    Score some damn runs now.

  255. Xstar7 says:

    Hurlin’ Hector

  256. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Crush that bullpen.

  257. Mike Axisa says:

Look at that, Gardner leading off another inning. Girardi’s a genius, I tells ya.

  258. Xstar7 says:

    That was fucking ball 4.

  259. Cy Pettitte says:

    3-0 autostrike ugh.

  260. Xstar7 says:

    BABIP fucked again

  261. teddy says:

    fuck this ump

  262. mbonzo says:

  263. JohnnyC says:

Geico commercials jumped the shark a couple of years ago. Stop trying to be funny…you’re not.

  264. Jerome S. says:

Arod’s home runs > Jeter’s hits. I could care less if the milestone’s been “cheapened”.

  265. Xstar7 says:

Can I have a Granderslam please?

  266. Jetrer says:

espn finally good for something – their camera anyways

  267. mbonzo says:

  268. IRF says:

  269. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

  270. Xstar7 says:

RISP fails, defensive blunders, AJ meltdowns, this game has it all.

  271. IRF says:

    Fuck this ump

  272. Jerome S. says:

    Well, that sucked major nuts.

  273. mbonzo says:

Someone take this homeplate umpire outback and put him out of his misery.

  274. Jonathan Harker says:

I really hate ESPN. We couldn’t even see that pitch location because of the behind the plate camera angle. I say it every time and nothing ever gets changed.

  275. Mike Axisa says:

What was he waiting for? Too close to take with two strikes.

  276. teddy says:

redsox give up 7 , they score 11. yanks can’t do shit

    • Rockstar4Life says:

To be fair the Red Sox have been playing a lot of really bad teams as of late. And after this series they get to play two more crappy teams in the Mariners and Royals, both in Fenway.

  277. Hummingbird S. says:

2 more stranded, 7 on the night and 1-8 with RISP. Just another day at the office for the guys.

  278. Bartolo's Colon says:

  279. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

  280. Xstar7 says:

Of course the Orioles blow their lead.

  281. FIPster Doofus says:

The Orioles are a sick fucking joke.

  282. King George says:

Not sure if it’s funny or just fucking pathetic that the Orioles can’t do fucking shit against the Sox. Got swept at Fenway and now they’re getting railed at Camden. It’s pathetic. Just two wins out of the last 5 or 6 would have been fucking nice to have. Just ridiculous.

    • first time lawng time says:

Not sure if it’s funny or just fucking pathetic that the Yankees can’t do fucking shit against the Sox. Got swept at Yankee Stadium and then they got railed at Fenway. It’s pathetic. Just two wins out of the last 5 or 6 would have been fucking nice to have. Just ridiculous.

On a serious note, yes, I agree with what you’re saying. The O’s are fucking useless.

  283. JohnnyC says:

Umpires make bad calls but that was too close a pitch to take with 2 strikes.

  284. Greg says:

The Red Sox get away with so much bad pitching. WHy cant we do that? This year it seems that our pitching has overachived. Yet we dont get any love at all. I’m sorry, but it really depresses me.

  285. Jetrer says:

this umpire is a fucking joke

  286. Jonathan Harker says:

This homeplate ump is one of the worst in recent memory, worse than Angel Hernandez.

  287. Bartolo's Colon says:

man if nunie keeps playing defense like this, he might get himself a gold glove

  288. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Ump must be getting Bj’s from the Rays.

    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=3.gif

  289. Jetrer says:

Heads its a strike, tails its a ball
    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=7.gif

    absolute fucking Joke

  290. Xstar7 says:

Let’s see if they can turn this leadoff single into something.

  291. mbonzo says:

    Here comes the 3-0 autostrike

  292. Jonathan Harker says:

This is our inning, gotta at least tie it up.

  293. Xstar7 says:

Now would be a great time for Andruw Jones to make his bones.

  294. Rockstar4Life says:

DP for Posada following by swinging strike out for Martin. Good times.

  295. Brandon says:

Hey look at this familiar face. Krazy Kyle Farnesworthless.

Hmmm, Posada cant be to happy about that. Maybe he gets rediculously upset again and calls it quits? #wishfulthinking

  296. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Tie this up.

  297. Bartolo's Colon says:

it looks like posada is thinking about benching himself tomorrow

    • Dank Weather Forecasts! says:

yeah – watching this on gameday – was that posada pull the beginning of a new fiasco?

      • JohnnyC says:

ARod being out 4-6 weeks and Tex not hitting puts some real heat on Posada for sure. He may be looking at a DFA (especially if Yanks trade for Beltran).

  298. IRF says:

    Damn, that was soooooo close

  299. Brandon says:

Oh hello, Krazy Kyle. Nice to see you again.

  300. bonestock94 says:

Oh, please give me sweet sweet revenge here

  301. Greg says:

    OK Brett

  302. JobaWockeeZ says:

Thank god it’s Gardner. GIDP is hard here.

  303. first time lawng time says:

Jorge really does whine a lot. I love ya, Jorgie, but seriously stop complaining like a little beeyotch and shut up.

  304. Xstar7 says:

The Yankees have to score here.

  305. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Yes thank you happy birthday.

  306. mbonzo says:

    GARDNER YOU BEAUTIFUL MAN!

  307. Xstar7 says:

Yeah Gardner! Now let’s get one more!

  308. Brandon says:

    Brett Gardner. Good at baseball.

  309. first time lawng time says:

DP or SO from Captain Clutch coming up.

  310. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Nunie and Jeter. PLEASE tie this up.

  311. mbonzo says:

GARDNER! And he took out that asshole Rodriguez.

  312. Xstar7 says:

    YES! TIE GAME BITCHES!

  313. IRF says:

GRIT! What a slide. Play of the game right there

  314. Grit for Brains says:

    That was a gritty slide.

  315. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

2 double play balls that have meant runs tonight.

  316. Mister Delaware says:

That was one gritty ass slide.

  317. mike c says:

    FARNSWORTH!

  318. Bartolo's Colon says:

man, gardner is getting to pedroia grittiness levels lately

  319. Brandon says:

Again, Brett Gardner. Good at baseball.

Eduardo Nunez. Still trying to figure this whole baseball thing out.

  320. JobaWockeeZ says:

Don’t fucking clap Nunez, Gardner did all the work. Can anyone do something besides hit a grounder. Like shit Gardner is doing everything.

  321. Chip says:

Wow, it blows my mind how fast Gardner gets to second

  322. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Oh, yeah Farnsworth blows a save!

  323. first time lawng time says:

    Gardner!!!!

    MEGATRON!

Or is he only a tank?

  324. Chip says:

    Ugh, Jeter still sucks

  325. jon says:

    clutch jeter

  326. Jonathan Harker says:

Take a pitch, Jeter. Give the better hitter a chance to win the game. Dummy.

  327. Brandon says:

David Cone, Camden Yards is on line 1. It would like to talk to you.

  328. Jetrer says:

way to turn a walk into a K Cap

  329. Greg says:

Good pitching sequence by Farnsworth. High fastball low slider.

  330. Mike Axisa says:

    Jeter is so fucking useless.

    • Greg says:

The ump had been off all night so that’s why he swung at the 3-1. The low slider was a good pitch.

I’m very dissappointed in you Mike.

      • Karl Krawfid says:

Get the hell out of here with that bullshit.

He swung at ball 4 that was near his balding head.

      • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

You can’t be serious. That 3-1 pitch was head high. You CAN’t swing at that.

      • Jetrer says:

The ump hasn’t called a single head high pitch a strike. Stop making excuses for a shitty player. Even if the ump would call that pitch a strike, you wouldn’t swing at it until he had to with 2 strikes. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SWINGING AT THAT GARBAGE IN ANY COUNT, certainly not 3-1.

        • Greg says:

It was at the numbers. It wasnt head high. I saw it.

          • Jetrer says:

Way above the strike zone. Way above anything that had been called a strike. Stop trolling.

            • Greg says:

The ump had called a high strike on Gardner just a few batters ago.

              • Jetrer says:

nope, that pitch to Gardner was actually in the strikezone
Its irrelevant anyways, even if it might have been called a strike (it definitely would not have been), its not a good pitch to hit, and its dumb to swing at awful pitches to hit if you don’t have to, which with only 1 strike, Jeter did not have to

  331. first time lawng time says:

Lol Jeter, you are so shitty.

  332. Xstar7 says:

Wow. Who didn’t see that Jeter strikeout coming? Captain Unclutch

But they tied the game and that’s what matters.

  333. ItsATarp says:

Jeter hasn’t done shit since 3000…ughh

  334. Karl Krawfid says:

Got a guy with 25 bombs on deck and Jeter does that bullshit.

  335. Mojo says:

YOU FU#$ING SUCK, JETER! Be a man and remove yourself from this lineup, you goddamn cancer! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  336. IRF says:

Hey remember when Derek Jeter got his 3000th hit? That was cool.

  337. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

How about if Jeter just pretends he has 2,999 hits for the rest of the year.

  338. Greg says:

You all should be ashamed of yourselves cursing at Jeter. You try and hit a high fastball followed by a slider.

  339. Mojo says:

Having Jeter and Tex so close to each other in this lineup could be the DUMBEST managerial decision in baseball. If you have to clump ‘em together, at least plop ‘em down at the bottom of the order!

  340. IRF says:

    Changeup?!?!

  341. Chip says:

    WTF, was that a changeup?

  342. TheMick says:

Maybe they should erase Jeter’s memory everyday and tell him he’s at hit number 2,998….

  343. Mykey says:

Sheesh, some of this stuff is hard to read.

  344. Chip says:

Wow, alright this isn’t going to be fair if he starts doing that

  345. Mike Axisa says:

Put him in the rotation with that changeup.

  346. Greg says:

Guys the 3-1 was at the numbers. The ump had just called a high strike on Gardner. It wasnt head high

  347. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    What happened to my comment?

  348. Ray the Anti-Handle says:

Last pitch in the Zobrist AB was a change, right? Gameday said FB, but it was 88mph…

  349. Stratman9652 says:

Two of the guys the Rays called up TODAY are in the game, meanwhile the pine under Brandon Laird’s ass is nice and toasty.

  350. Monteroisdinero says:

Durham is giving us a good battle tonight in Tampa.

    Montero HR tonight. Yes!

  351. jon says:

seems like hes actually thrown some change ups

    http://www.fangraphs.com/stats.....#pitchtype

  352. V says:

Too bad the Grandy man didn’t get to bat with the bases loaded…

  353. Xstar7 says:

    The Grandyman is so awesome.

  354. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Fucking ump

  355. JobaWockeeZ says:

Teix is the worst first round pick I made ever…

  356. Xstar7 says:

Jesus. Tex has been so useless lately.

  357. Ivan says:

    SMFH….Tex, this is becoming absurd.

  358. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Changeup, strike three.

  359. Greg says:

The same happened with Jeter and the high fastball.

    Kenny Singleton agrees.

  360. Mojo says:

And so it begins: The sub .240 era of Mark Teixera. Deplorable.

  361. Monteroisdinero says:

Stop blaming the ump Tex and announcers. Suck it up and make contact on a changeup every 10 games!

  362. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Tex should have bunted. Seriously.

  363. Xstar7 says:

    The Grandyman does it all.

  364. IRF says:

    Grandy wants that 30-30 season

  365. jon says:

wow i thought they had him not even close to a tag

  366. Monteroisdinero says:

This guy Torres reminds me of Banuelos physically.

  367. ItsATarp says:

Who here really really misses Arod right now?

  368. Ivan says:

For the last year and a half, I have more confidence in Cano in these spots than Tex.

  369. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Bummer.

  370. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Come on Swish

  371. Karl Krawfid says:

Tampa is trying to give us this game.

    Yankees don’t want it.

  372. Mike Axisa says:

Walking Swisher to get to Jones with a LHP? Ballsy.

  373. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Fuck Jones is on deck.

  374. Xstar7 says:

    Kim Jones has a blog?

    No thanks.

  375. IRF says:

Kill them all Andruw. Kill them all.

  376. Greg says:

    Well….

  377. Ivan says:

If im a Rays fan, I would like this move.

  378. jon says:

im going to be so angry when jones smiles after striking out on 3 pitchess

  379. Xstar7 says:

Andruw was trying to hit the ball all the way to Orlando with that swing.

  380. Ivan says:

Jones was sure going for that single.

  381. IRF says:

    That’ll do pig

  382. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Awful strikezone tonight

  383. jon says:

    lets go HBP

  384. Mojo says:

    This can’t end well.

  385. T.J. says:

Is Russell Martin taking lessons in how to grow a mustache from Travis Snider?

  386. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I’m so hoping for a walk.

  387. Ivan says:

    The suspense!!!!

  388. jon says:

is that a mustache martin is growing?

  389. NHYankeesFan says:

A 3-2 change up with the bases loaded. He’s got some balls

  390. ItsATarp says:

    That’ll do

  391. Greg says:

    HE WALKED IN A RUN

  392. Ivan says:

    Great AB Russell, great AB.

  393. Ray the Anti-Handle says:

    YES!

  394. Stratman9652 says:

    The powers of the shitstache.

  395. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Yay.

  396. Jonathan Harker says:

What a series of ABs. Way to walk Swisher, Maddon. Idiot.

  397. Jack says:

    Baton: Passed

  398. Jetrer says:

Good thing Greg isn’t Martin’s hitting coach or Martin would have swung at that

  399. Xstar7 says:

COLTRANE! Take notes Jeter, that’s how you take a pitch!

  400. jon says:

    jeter and teix

woo high five our failures are going to be ignored tonight

  401. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    WHAT???

  402. Ray the Anti-Handle says:

    Torres has completely lost it.

  403. Chip says:

Wow, they’re really throwing this kid into the fire. He’s going to end up throwing 50 pitches in one inning

  404. NHYankeesFan says:

I would hate to have to face Gardner in this situation. He’s the definiton of a pest

  405. Ivan says:

Gardner is sure one pesky and annoying little mothafucker…..but he’s our pesky and annoying mothafucker.

  406. Stratman9652 says:

Poor kid really got hung out there.

  407. Xstar7 says:

At least they got one run.

But that 3-0 pitch to Gardner was ball 4. This umpires blows.

  408. Brandon says:

LOL! Brett Gardner. 5 at bats. 1-3 RBI 2 BB 1 SB. 32 pitches seen. 6.4 pitches seen per AB.

    Brett Gardner. Good at baseball.

  409. Avi says:

And Montero goes BOOM in Scranton.

  410. CBean says:

Come on Mo, 2 more pitches, 2 more outs.

  411. Ivan says:

Yo stop scaring me like that Mo.

  412. Ivan says:

    The fuck outta here Upton.

    /Straight Outta Brooklyn’d

  413. Jetrer says:

how the hell is Upton arguing that, it was almost right down the middle

  414. Mike Axisa says:

    Great fuckin’ win.

  415. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Nice play by Tex to end it

  416. Ivan says:

    GAME BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  417. ItsATarp says:

So is that 2009ish enough for some of you guys?

  418. Bartolo's Colon says:

great win, it seems like there have been very few come from behind wins this year, and props to the yankee fans at the trop for getting out of tex’s way

  419. Xstar7 says:

    Ballgame. Do it again tomorrow.

  420. Avi says:

    Mo bless America.

  421. Sweet Dick Willie says:

So did momentum just trump market correction? What just happened? I used to think it was just the normal ebb and flow of a baseball season, but now we have to label it, and I can’t figure it out.

  422. tut says:

    Tonight’s game was a gift.

    • Jim Is Bored(Jim S) says:

Fact: Every Yankee win is a gift from the other team.

Fact: Every Red Sox win is a testament to the down-to-earth lunch-pail perseverance every single player on their team exhibits day in and day out.

    • Xstar7 says:

Considering all the games the Yankees let slip away this year, I gladly accept this gift.

  423. rek4gehrig says:

Tex’s batting average aint pretty but boy, is he good in the field. great win!!!!

    • Rick says:

Weren’t you reading? A gold glover would have caught that ball from AJ in the first. Or knocked it down or something.

  424. swishers fauxhawk says:

Strike 3 to Upton was straight up filth.

  425. teddy says:

nice great at bats in the 9th

  426. Brandon says:

Come on, YES. There is no need to stick around to find out the player of the game. We all know it is Brett Gardner.

  427. Jonathan Harker says:

And now we just need to win 2/3 and we put them in a really bad spot 8 games behind us in the loss column. We need the good Bartolo to return tomorrow.

  428. Dela G says:

    great effing win
