Game 95: Freddy’s Turn
ByBartolo Colon rebounded from a pair of subpar starts last night, striking out a season-high nine in 6.1 IP. There’s always going to be a little bit of concern each time he starts, but last night’s effort let us sleep just a little easier because Bart showed that the clock had not yet struck midnight. Now it’s Freddy Garcia‘s turn to do the same after getting hit around by the Blue Jays last week. I really don’t know if there’s one specific thing to look for tonight, at least with Bartolo you could look to see if he had his velocity or was throwing an inordinate number of sliders. With Freddy … I guess just look to see if he’s leaving pitches up? Everything’s going to be off the plate, everything’s going to be soft, that’s just the way he operates. Anyway, here’s the lineup…
Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, DH
Russell Martin, C
Andruw Jones, RF
Eduardo Nunez, 3B – perfect day to start Brandon Laird, but alas
Brett Gardner, LF
Freddy Garcia, SP
Tonight’s game can be seen on YES when it starts a little after 7pm ET. Enjoy.

Let’s get this one, boys…
Now we’ll see how Gardner bats with Jeter right behind him.
Also they just said Girardi was considering batting Gardner leadoff against the right handers.
Girardi had Gardner leading off for the game against the rays that was rained out
I hope Laird isn’t becoming Hector Noesi 2.0
If they intended to start Laird at 3B regularly, you’d have to think they’d have promoted him right away and not only once Pena got hurt. It seems to me like Laird was brought up to sit on the bench and get a few PAs now and again.
My guess is Laird almost never plays, and is sent right back down as soon as the club believes Chavez is ready to be called up.
This…he’ll be back by Monday unless glass breaks again.
Even though Laird hits lefties well I don’t know if a match up with David Price is anybody’s ideal MLB debut.
Remember Marcus Thames’ debut against Randy Johnson? Not saying it’ll happen, but not a bad way to start you MLB career.
Hah, touche.
Especially because Nunez hits lefties pretty well too.
Nunez hasn’t hit much of anything lately. He’s been on base six times in eight games since A-rod got hurt.
Curse you and your facts.
…but he went 7-for-8 over the weekend once.
/forthosenunezoverjeterclowns’d
And I still have a higher wOBA than Jeter.
So who here thinks Upton’s getting traded?
you’re brian cashman. theo offers ellsbury straight up for gardner
what do you do?
Ellsbury’s the better player, but Gardner is considerably cheaper. He’ll be undervalued in arbitration because his value is tied up in his defense, so he’ll stay cheap too.
Just ask if Ellsbury is better than Gardner. He is. He’s Gardner with power. Turning into an awesome player.
Judging by his new-found power, Ellsbury’s on steroids. So, Gardner.
Yeah I’m unsure of Gardner’s power surge is for real.
Err…Ellsbury.
Take him.
How awesome would it be if Price tries to exact a little revenge and beans Jeter to open up the game?
A man can hope…
He doesn’t seem to be the kind of player.
Are you saying you want Jeter hurt so we can then have E-Nunez back at short? I had enough of that. I’d like to see Laird and Chavez share third while A-Rod is out.
No, definitely not hurt, I’ve had enough of Nunez at short too. I’m completely with you there. Was just hoping something would happen to get him on base, but it looks like the Old Man took care of that all by himself.
I’d rather a base hit.
Of course, I just didn’t like the odds of the Corpse of DJ pulling it off despite his recent success against Price. Clearly, I was wrong.
Hey we’re all wrong sometimes
He is one of those anti-Jeter trolls. I think he must have a crush on either Minka or Nunez.
I also don’t think Price is that type of player. He came across as a cool likeable dude in that pre-game bit about 3,000. I was just being silly.
My bad, your not one of the trolls (or so it seems).
No worries, CS Yankee. Enjoy the game.
Thanks, I’m still at work but should have it on in a hour.
Gameday & RAB to the rescue.
Peace.
Thank god for the Internet Machine. Later.
Explain to me again why you want to see jeter get hit y a pitch ?
game started!!!!!!!
He lives!
go jeter!hit then a stolen base.
It’s like his eyes light up when he sees Price lol
Jeter lives to leadoff another day. And as I type this he steals a base. Of course.
The way things have gone lately, maybe Jeter should pretend every opposing pitcher is David Price.
Jeter loooooves the first innings.
He looooooooooves him some David Price even more.
tex is going on a very hot streak and it starts today. Grandyman!!!!!!!!!!
SHE’S GONE!
And boom goes the Grandymite.
Did you just come up with this one? Either way, I like. Like it a lot.
Will be adding to the repertoire.
The Grandyman strikes again.
Curtis!
Granderson redeeming himself for last night’s debacle.
good way to start the game boys!!!!!!!
rally killer
hard hit ball by tex!
I think he’s starting to turn it around. He hit some balls well last night.
yes he did and am liking what he has been doing the past few days.
We’re hitting rockets off Price
Except for Robbie
4 hard hit balls in 5 ABs
5 in 6.
Yeah. This is a good sign. Martin just missed making the game 4-0 already.
would u guys rather have shields or Ubaldo?
For free? Ubie.
not for free.
Shields, proven in the AL East and has shown flashes of Ace potential this year.
Shields is better this year. Both have consistent xFIP’s lower than 4. Shields would cost more. Tough question.
i like ubaldo he is more long term and a hire ceiling, this is as good as shields would get but am ok with one of those 2.
Shields isn’t going to be moved. I mean the Rays aren’t 50 games out. 4 or 5 may be sizable but it isn’t impossible. And I’m still unsure on Ubaldo. I may be paranoid but I don’t like any it when starters are walking as much as AJ Burnett.
Ubaldo, unless sheilds costs a third of the farm that Ubaldo would.
Not considering what it’s likely to acquire him, Shields. Considering the cost, Ubaldo.
Shields is the better bet but Uabldo is gonna be cheaper so him.
Even that was hard.
WTP for Martin in back to back at bats
Be Ready Freddy! nah, that stinks. um, lets see, Go getty Freddy!, no definitely not, uh, um, Kill Freddy Kill!!!!
Get ready, Sweaty Freddy!
One, two: Freddy’s coming for you.
ARod has that.
pastadivingarod might disagree.
A-Rod has been fantastic defensively this year.
Freddy just can’t have 123 first innings.
most impressive thing to me about Bart last night was the way he dominated Longoria. Blew fastballs By Him!
Evan has that hillbilly haircut and is batting like .230, kid is ailing in all facets.
ailing indeed, but still can catch up to a fastball
I think this game is going to be a slug fest.
Also I like how tex hits the ball the other way vs. left handed pitching. Slower bat speed or deliberately trying?
he will get out of it dont worry freddy is here.
we should have one yesterday, we had no luck with the roof.
*won
yeah freddy!
Even Gameday’s park view of the stadium has the annoying lights & ceiling. makes it harder to track a pitch of ball in play.
/jk’d
If Sweaty can escape the first inning unscathed, you know he’s going to have a good start.
Bingo
I think they’ll both make the playoffs. Seriously.
The Indians have a 75% chance.
The Pirates? I’m not sure of they’ll stay ahead of the Cardinals and Brewers the rest of the way.
I think Carlos Beltran would be perfect for the Buccos
They’ll be even better if they get him and a decent starter.
That would be terrific if the Pirates acquired him. But I think it’s more likely that he’ll go to the Giants or Red Sox.
Giants. For obvious reasons.
Their offense is pretty anemic outside of the Kung Fu Panda. They must really miss Buster Posey.
Maddon’s up to his old tricks
First day back at work after being out 4 1/2 weeks. I’m not even taking calls and I’ve only been here 4 1/2 hours. Guess which feels like it’s taken longer?
i really would like the yankees to add an ace but to not overpay.
And I would like to win the lottery.
America agrees with you.
I am America.
And so can you!
They also need an offensive force at Dh and C, but w/o giving too much up.
getting slightly greedy now
if you have not looked at our farm we have that in Montero!
And it goes way over his/her head.
So would I.
-Brian Cashman
Gritner
That was the grittiest base hit by a player not named Dustin Pedroia that I’ve ever seen.
That set a new high on the Grit-chter Scale.
The Great Brettsky approves.
yeah gardner got a hit and almost injured price.
Brett Gardner is superman
Megatron.
Unicron
Nice at bat Jeter!
Jeter didnt look comfortable up there that time
That’s because it wasn’t the first inning.
Always a good strategy to watch 3 pitches right down the middle.
As great as Gardner has been in this series, that’s as bad Jeter has been in this series.
I’m afraid that this actually made sense. Therefore, I decree you are not Tim McCarver.
I look up for a a minute from my phone and see Gardner has singled and stolen second. Just another at bat or the best leftfielder in the league.
Hell yeah.
Carl Crawford who?
He needs to add alot more random pronouns.
Reply fail
It’s okay. We all know that comment was meant for Tim McCarver.
yeah B.J. Upton is getting traded.
I never realized Grandy struck out that much.
Freddy 69-87mph. A nice mix of speeds.
I wish this was one of those games that’s over in the 2nd inning.
Harry M. Stevens does not endorse this comment.
BY the way, imagine if we had Lance Berkman this year. My goodness.
He could have been great as DH but he wanted to play the field.
Would have been awesome, however, he would have only been a bench player for the Yankees. Hard to hit 20-30 homeruns when you only get as many AB’s as Andruw Jones.
Freddy has been a godsend this year.
& his heat actually touches 88 (when you round up) at times.
I like Freddy, if Pettitte pitched another couple of years; this is exactly what he would be…
“crafty like a mircobrewer”.
Well with Grandy going yard and passing Teix with the NYY lead…
Teix seems to catch (& pass him) whenever that happens so lets hope they do the Maris/Mantle thing all year long.
That was high
High and outside. Nice.
That pitch was HIGH. Like the ump.
Hey, Tex popped up.
I know he popped up but I still like what he has done in this series interms of fixing his swing
Nice job, Tex. Man, he is really sucking. This appears to be more than a slump, I’m afraid…
He did go 2-4 yesterday
Anyone else watching the Rays feed? What the fuck is Rapuano doing?
Can’t be content with a 2-0 lead. We saw what happened last night.
Give Freddy a good cushion of runs to work with.
melky is on a pace for
100 runs
20 hrs
40 doubles
90 rbi
200 hits
23 sb
OMG the Yankees traded Willie Mays!
You mean Jeter in his prime…Mays typically had many more dingers per…
ohh, back to the sarcasm.
Runs and RBI don’t mean sh*t. And in case you didn’t realize, we have a pretty damn good outfield.
They do when you play for the Royals and have that many.
Good piece today on Tex to compliment the previous two.
That said, have the Yankees addressed that he just stinks right now from the plate? He is becoming an automatic out and is providing nothing to protect Cano – or ARod for that matter.
Only Robbie hits them out there. Nice try.
Mark Teixeira sucks.
the Grandyman can(‘t see fly balls in the Trop)
Grandy cant see in CF. They should switch him with Gardner.
Reid below the Mendoza-line, ouch to the OF.
Man, Kim doesn’t appear to be giving good news on Nova…
I really like hearing about sting rays when I watch baseball. GTFO Kim Jones.
Hahahaha, agreed.
This is seriously the dumbest shit ever, I can’t believe this is on television, during a ball game nonetheless.
She should at least climb in the tank like the crocodile hunter.
If she does that one of the Rays might steal her virginity.
Too far?
Not for me but I can’t speak for the others.
I DON’T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOUR GODDAMN RAYS KIM, YOU FAT BITCH!!11!1!1!1!1!!
+1000
Would you hit it?
Sure, why not.
Agree, unless you listen to Coldplay.
That’s besides the point.
You could do a lot worse than Kim Jones. And the outfits YES picks for her don’t help.
You could do a lot worse than Kim Jones.
Suzyn Waldman DNETC.
Oh Mo no…
Ump is slowly starting to climb the piss off meter
this ump is terrible… but it’s probably because of the stadium roof.
Those rays are pretty cool. Not sure if I would want to stick my hand in that tank though.
You know what would be cool, if the Cubs had actual bears roaming Wrigley Field. Bears, Ron!
Feed a goat to the bears… leave that curse in a steaming pile of bear poopie.
pastadivingjeter
Derek Jeter: no range
Normally yes but the artifical turf might have had soemthing to do with that.
Touché
The turf helped that one out
Jesus he has awful range
I’ll take Jeter’s awful range over the Nunez into the seats stuff seven days a week and twice on Sundays.
You wouldn’t?
Keith Olberman’s mom approves this choice.
“Derek Jeter- Underneath his glove” doesn’t sound as good as pastadivingjeter.
Jeez man.
When did Kotchman turn into a hitter?
Suzyn was just saying he got his eyes fixed during the offseason.
Must share an eye doctor with Ortiz
eye doctor = D.R. shakes
I guess
The Chief
underthebatoflongoria
Freddy…
crafty like a mircobrewer, I tell you.
Freddy…
Krafty like cheesasaurus rex’s macroni and cheese, I tell you.
FTFY
You keep the cheap pasta, I’ll stay with the beer.
I can respect that.
That’s a lot of swinging strikes.
i’ve grown to love freddy garcia
Montero with a big hit 1-1 3rbi’s….
I’ll show you bored.
Looks like Jorge’s been providing Martin with guidance.
Martin can’t buy a hit these days, and he’s hitting a lot of them on the nose.
Martin strikes again.
He hit it hard
Did the momentum change?
two hard hit balls from martin but nothing to show for it.
Is there gonna be a rant on RAB about how DH and C are the biggest offensive holes, and the best hurting prospect in baseball, who is either andh or a cc is redoing AAA? I really like when the writers rant, it makes me feel better.
Here you go.
DH: http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....ain-52678/
C: http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....son-50981/
Jose Quintana. Legit prospect?
Is there gonna be a rant on RAB about how DH and C are the biggest offensive holes, and the best hitting prospect in baseball, who is either Dh or a C is redoing AAA? I really like when the writers rant, it makes me feel better.
You just said that
Oops
Maybe the guy who said the Yankees discriminate against Latin players is around tonight.
I would like one of those too.
This is looking like the same script as last night. No offense except for a 2-run HR.
Let’s hope it doesn’t end like last night.
Sam Fuld is such a pesky little bastard when he plays against the Yankees.
Nolan Garcia
Freddy is getting a bunch of swinging strikes. Very nice.
I think I like this Freddy Garcia experiment. Cashman should be on American Pickers (I’m guessing… I’ve never actually seen more than 5 minutes of that horrible show)
I’d say it’s about even money that before the end of the year, or during the playoffs, some team accuses Sweaty Freddy of doctoring the ball.
It’s been a long time since I’ve heard of anyone accused of doctoring the ball.
Kenny Rogers had that white chalk on his cap in the 06 World Series. I don’t remember if much was made of that…
Oh and the media made a big deal last postseason when Cliff Lee went to his cap a lot against the Yankees.
Blue Jays are my early favorites.
Ahem.
http://www.halosheaven.com/200.....ball-video
Just another reason I hate the Angels.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
(takes breath)
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
‘Effin hilarious. Those goddamn Angels fans.
Fear Brett Gardner.
Gardner scared the control out of Price
Brett Gardner. That man just fucking gets on base.
This just screams DP if Gardy doesnt steal
You called it.
and Joestradamus strikes again
Just go… that would’ve been a hell of a jump.
Proposed new lineup
Gardner
Jeter
Granderson
ARod
Cano
Tex
Swisher
Montero
Martin
Please.
We’re basically seeing that tonight with Gardner in front of Jeter.
And what do you do with Posada?
Take him out back and shoot him?
It’s not so much getting Gardner in front of Jeter, its about getting him the most at bats. A leadoff guy is going to get more at bats than the 9th hitter almost every time.
Make him play only against righties.
That is a nice lineup although a bit unrealistic since Teix is staying in the 3 hole for probably 6 more years. If Girardi stuck with him in his disastrous months of 2010 April and May he’ll stick with him now. And yes they were terrible months to whoever will argue the point.
Brett fucking Gardner.
Brett Gardner is ready to rent some cahs.
Its ridiculous how if there’s a guy a pitcher really doesn’t want to get on base, they walk em constantly. All an announcer has to do is say “here’s a guy you really don’t want on base”.
not at all predictable
Jeter is so useless after the first inning.
Trade for Reyes and PH him for Jeter after his first AB.
/kidding, kind of
Well, he can hit lefties at least
See? This is what will happen if Gardner bats leadoff.
only if he doesn’t steal(he should), and only if Jeter bats second (he shouldn’t – at least against RHP)
Give me a proposal.
sorry, I’m not looking to get married, certainly not to a dude
Fine. A sample lineup will suffice
OK, vs. RHP – Gardner, Grandy, Tex, Cano, Swish, Posada, Jeter, Martin, Nunez
vs. LHP – Jeter, Grandy Tex, Cano, Swish, Gardner, Jones, Martin, Nunez
Simply swap the two. It will never ever ever ever happen though as long as the lineup is dictated by the name and not the performance.
oh please.
seriously, Jeter should just go up there and take.
Gardner should have went there. They weren’t throwing him out.
That’s why they won’t move Jeter out of the leadoff spot. The only other place to bat him is 9th… and they won’t do that to him. They won’t bat him 2nd.
We have a winner!
they could let him save face a little bit and just drop him to 6-7.
He could bat ahead of Posada, Nunez, Martin
Except when they will…
Gardner LF
Jeter SS
Granderson CF
Teixeira 1B
Cano 2B
Posada DH
Jones RF
Nunez 3B
Cervelli C
That was the July 8 lineup, as mentioned upthread (rained out)
i dont care where gardner bats just as long as its in front of jeter so he can steal and avoid the DB
Comon Freddy, can we get a 1-2-3 inning?
Gardner has to learn to be more assertive on the bases. This a rookie catcher who just came up Tuesday and has yet to throw anyone out. Gardner has to make this guy throw him out. It seemed like Jeter was waiting for Gardner to go and he wouldn’t.
um after the first pitch jeter swung at the next four
Jeter only took the first pitch (a ball), and then swung at every pitch after that, when exactly was he waiting
Gardner still should have gone though
Doesn’t matter. The worst thing that could have happened is Jeter lines into a DP. On the other hand, a hit gets Gardner to third or even home; a grounder prevents a DP.
Oh I def. think Gardner should have gone, my point was that Jeter was not waiting for him to go
Hey, Granderson caught a fly ball to centerfield.
What do you guys think about Hiroki Kuroda? He would be a pretty decent trade, and would mostly require just salary. He would also just be for the rest of the season, so no long term aging pitcher stuff from him.
whos he really going to replace right now?
colon and freddy have been beater than him so far
Phil Hughes?
No he’s better than Freddy. Possibly better than Hughes and any starter nowadays is better than Burnett.
said he didnt want to go to an East Coast team
That could be just a negotiation ploy, as he will require compensation from having to wave his no-trade clause. Kinda like “oh, well if its the Yanks, I want x more dollars”.
One of the better options out there. I doubt he’ll be traded though.
Gardy playing left and center. Beyond Grit.
It’s beyond baseball
How many plate appearances does someone have to have to qualify for the batting title, anyway?
2.7 per team game, I think.
Nope, I’m wrong. It’s 3.1 PA per team game, or 502 over the full season.
Mike with the big brain…
Thin ice all night. Gotta get those tack on runs when you can.
3 hits to Kotchman – Garcia should be DFA’d.
Longoria in dangerous RISP territory (for us).
Fucking Casey Kotchman
Watching GD, couldn’t figure put how Damon didn’t score, then I saw to left fielder Brett Gardner” and I smiled.
Monsieur Martin with another save. great goaltender.
Martin Broduer, so to speak
Grandy!
GRANDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
don’t worry freddy is here!
Curtis says, “fuck yo roof”
Thank god Grandy saw that one
Gardner saved a run, and Grandy saved two.
Grandyman
Wow nice catch! I can always appreciate a really good defensive play
The Yankees don’t care about defense.
Sincerely,
Rob Neyer
Well that used to be the case.
Or at least seemed to be.
Yeah, but not when Neyer wrote that article.
Grandersave! Gardy couldn’t help him on that one.
The Yankees outfield is just ridiculous.
Its weird that Garcia’s LOB rate is only 76%. I feel like he leaves a runner on every inning.
Does anyone else think of a 3some when they see the Nisson commercial with the twins?
/possibleTMI
All these media appearances with Alex Morgan and Hope Solo have me thinking…
Hope Solo isn’t as cute in her close up interviews.
Alex Morgan on the other hand is a hottie any way you look at it.
Hope Solo just doesn’t do it for me. She looks like Ben Affleck with a wig.
/ducks
That seems a bit harsh.
much better D tonight
Grandy is getting beat up
The Yankees need some runs.
I can feel the presence of a certain commenter who will remain nameless lying in the weeds waiting to pounce if they should blow the lead.
Thank Mo for Grandy.
Disturbing trends!
Anyone ever wonder who writes the adjectives on GD. What constitutes sharply or softly?
GD = GameDay?
MLB.com has people in the press box entering the info into the system. I don’t know what decides sharply or softly, but it’s not a rinky dink operation.
There’s a good swing
that a boy tex!
Thank you for telling us that Jacoby Ellsbury hit two home runs in Balitmore twice Kenny.
That’s two times too many.
Also Yay Tex for hitting a ball the other way.
Teix steams into 2nd
honestly that is the best way to describe the way he runs
Not the most athletic looking guy, is he?
He does lamaze breathing as he runs the bases.
It’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen on a baseball diamond, outside of Ed Whitson looking psychotic during a Padres/Braves brawl in 1984.
what the fuck cano
Great plate discipline there Robbie. Jesus…
This is who Cano is
what the frick u swinging at Robinson?
Cano would have kept swinging at that pitch if he had ten strikes to work with.
It’s like he was determined to show that he could hit that ball… unfortunately he was wrong.
lol Cano was determined not to take a pitch on that at bat.
Can-lol
It’s like everyone knew that exact pitch was coming except Cano. But baseball is hard… I won’t complain.
I think he knew… he just thought he could hit it.
Absolutely terrible AB for Cano.
Cant blame Jeter or Tex there
Teix should’ve hit a home run.
BOOM!
Way to add some insurance, Yankees.
good job with risp there guys
ugh
If Cano was just a tiny bit more selective, he’d be the best hitter in baseball.
Then again, I guess if he were more selective then he wouldn’t be Robinson Cano.
They made another Planet of the Apes and ANOTHER Final Destination. I want to personally meet anyone who will see either of those movies.
Maybe on Netflix, certainly not in the theatre.
I’ve only ever seen the original Hestonized Planet of the Apes, none of the sequels, though, and not the Wahlbergized remake.
But this new one almost looks like it’s a remake of one of the original sequels? Like the 4th or 5th one, maybe?
Oh, and they’re doing another Conan, too.
Well Conan hasn’t been redone has it? I’ll check that one out… maybe.
Well, yea, this is the first time. Not sure if you’d call this a remake or a reboot.
Seems that those terms are almost interchangeable now.
It’s a re-imagining…
That’s a reboot then.
we need some more runs!
Gardy’s plate discipline + Cano’s plate talent=????
Pujols??
Vlad?
Cano already has Vlad’s plate discipline
I like those quick outs
Cano…so smooth
My god that was smooth. That reminded me of Cliff Lee in game 1 of the 09 series
way to freddy 123 inning.
What an effective inning.
So why don’t any other teams put in their equivalent of mitre when down 2-3 runs and their starter starts to have a high pitch count?
When did Girardi do this? And last night doesnt count becasue Boone Logan is way better than Sergio Mitre
Did you watch the first game of the series? Tampa brought a kid in to make his MLB debut in a tie game.
After a 16 inning game the night before.
I know that there’s absolutely no evidence to support it, but I still expect Andruw Jones to belt a home run every time he comes to bat against a lefty.
I need to get my head out of 2005
Jesus, swap Jeter for Gardner in this line-up and the bottom of the order is pathetic.
Nunie walked and the Padres just scored 13 runs in 4 innings.
Ya know, Suzyn…
Welcome to MLB Mr. Chirinos.
The way Nunez runs so upright kind of reminds me of Bernie.
was he just gonna hold that ball at 2nd base all night?
Pretty impressive that Nunez has 12 stolen bases with his limited playing time.
and an equally unimpressive 12 errors
Yep.
So anyone going to rail on Gardner?
What the FUCK Gardner? Swing you piece of shit!
No. It’s Girardi’s fault.
If only we could combine the patient and aggressiveness of Cano and Gardner.
Now for RoMo and they can go home.
They have to get through the seventh though.
Opps. You’re right.
wow gardy i know you like being patient but swing the bat please!
Montero stronger arm than Chirinos.
just get thru the 7th, please
Nice hustle after the ball, Captain.
And I’ll shut up, that was Garcia.
Doesnt Jeter play short? That’s not his ball.
I thought that was him trailing the ball, it was Freddy.
I hate Sean Rodriguez.
Fucking Rays… this could lead to trouble.
FUUUUUUUCK SEAN RODRIGUEZ.
That bastard kills the Yankees.
I am a Nunez fan but that was dumb but where was the Captain?
Garcia needed to move his ass.
Have to say I’ve never seen that.
So, all of the base is in fair territory, even the part clearly left of the foul line?
Yeah, the entire base is fair territory.
Watched baseball alot of years, and that specific issue never came up before. I’d have guessed it right, but never saw it in action previously.
Nunez has to follow that ball and knock it away or pick it up after it went foul. You can’t just watch the ball keep rolling.
Not many here would have known to do that… of course Nunez is a pro and he has no excuse!
Logan comes in to a tough spot… I don’t like how this is turning out.
Garcia or Jeter really should have picked the ball up. 2 veterans
Lots of haircuts. Jeter took the team to his Tampa barber?
Nice. Teixeira just robbed Johnny of a double and an RBI.
Nice play Teix.
You suck Nunez.
Nunez should have gotten the ball, but it still would have been tough
Hurry back, Eric.
Nunez could FUCK up a cup of coffee.
the dreaded 7th inning…
ugh nunez
God fucking dammit Nunez.
However it was ruled a base hit and no error
which means absolutely nothing
the play should have been made
Nunez is completely fucking useless
I thought Jeter was useless?
no, Jeter is just a bad leadoff hitter against righties and useless with RISP, he does occasionally make plays in the field
Oh Noony-you’re killing me.
Boone time yayyyy
This would be a great time to bring in Robertson…Oh wait its not the 8th inning…
so why bring in the LNOGY when Garcia is at 91 pitches and not really laboring and should be out of this inning.
MatT Joyce is a lefty. Only argue when he’s facing a righty.
Kotchman 3 -3 today
Because Kotchman is 3-3 against him today.
Because Kotchman is 3 for 3 against Freddy
Fucking Nunez again. This guy needs to get off the field. Get Kouzmanoff- at least he can catch a fucking grounder and makes throws.
lets go logan we need you!
Runners on the corners with two out and a two run lead.
Doesn’t this scream DRob?
No. We can’t possibly put him in the 7th inning because he’s our 8th inning guy.
Girardi’d
One game where NunEEEEEEEEEz does not fuck up trying to field the ball. He is like a roadside bomb when he touches the ball.
Nunez dropped that ball 3 times on that play…
LOON BOGAN
Oh christ, It’s Casey Kotchman.
I know Eduardo Nunez is young. I know he’s not a natural 3rd baseman.
But Jesus Christ, he needs to learn how to field. Pick up the roller when it goes foul, play the groundball like an average player. Come on.
No, put in D-rob!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why? Joyce is a lefty
neither is Kotchman, which is more relevant now
1. this is kotchman
2. use your best non closer relief pitcher, not a pitcher who is only used situationally
Insert foot in mouth please.
D-Rob still would have been the better option. And he could have pitched the 8th too afterwards.
leave nunez alone it took a tough hop.
you’re kidding right???
C’mon blue, help Logan out on that pitch.
Lord knows he needs it.
Of course he throws the bat at the ball and of course it goes foul.
LOGAN REDEMPTION
Logan is a tank.
Fist pump!
Let’s get Freddy the win, he deserves it.
Boone saved Nunie’s ass there.
And exhale.
Okay Girardi and Logan haters what now?
Touche
Well I still can’t stand seeing Logan come into high leverage situations. He’s been better over the last couple of weeks, but if the season is on the line in the playoffs do I want to see Logan pitching to Hamilton/Ortiz/Howard/(insert scary lefty)?
Hell no.
There is a difference between a game in July and a game in August.
Since June 22 when Logan dropped his arm angle, he has a 2.16 ERA, 12K, and 1BB in 8.1IP. He’s given up 1 HR and has a .278 BABIP in that time, so it’s not completely luck.
Right now, I would trust him in big situations – particularly against lefties.
Didn’t you post the exact same thing verbatim last night?
Still saying that D-rob is a safer bet in that situation.
Joe Torre agrees with you.
No, Joe Torre used his best relievers when it was unnecessary or many days in a row. Robertson is still coming into the game no matter what, this was the most important time to do so.
That was a Cervellian fist pump
Boone looking MUCH better since he dropped his arm slot. Not exactly sure when that change took place…
Between the Cincinatti games (6/22)
Since June 22 when Logan dropped his arm angle, he has a 2.25 ERA, 12K, and 1BB in 8IP. He’s given up 1 HR and has a .278 BABIP in that time, so it’s not completely luck.
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....nt-2476591
Well freaking done.
With all of the (I feel undeserved) Logan-hate, I think I need to save that link for future use…
hell yaeh!!!!!!!!!! LOGAN!!!!!!!
Alright Boone!
Nice job cleaning up Nunez’ mess.
Girardi to blogsphere: stop acting like you know better than me.
In all seriousness, Boone has all the tools to be a solid LOOGY. I know you don’t just wake up with good command, but he’s not necessarily a finished product. They still could use another lefty
Don’t all lefthanded pitchers over 6’3″ have the tools to be a solid LOOGY?
If you pitch out of the bullpen and can’t locate, you’re nothing.
Hopefully Boone can keep this solid run going into the postseason.
All lefties over 6’3 with a plus fastball and a good slider.
No, Logan has a pretty effective slider as well. That and location is really all the tools you need to be a solid LOOGY.
Hey, Derek Jeter grounded out.
Sometimes you CAN predict baseball
Girardi isn’t an idiot, despite what everyone here likes to think. There’s still 70 games left in the season and he needs to balance how he uses his bullpen, with the hope of getting the most out of everyone.
By using Logan, 1. he shows confidence in him and who knows what important situations he will be need for the stretch run, and 2. Takes a couple more pitches off Robertson’s arm
We are manage for today, Girardi is managing for the season.
I agree. Although I still don’t agree with last night’s decision. I don’t like Girardi, but I think he made the right move tonight. That error that could have thrown Freddy off his game, and you have a batter in Kotchman that was 3-3 already on the night who also has a pronounced platoon split. That’s definitely a time for Logan. With two outs… for one batter. Get’s his confidence going like you said.
STOP HURTING MY GRANDERSON
LOL poor Grandy.
Perfect time to give him the day off with Shields pitching tomorrow.
Just give Grandy the day off tomorrow, this is getting ridiculous.
Poor Grandy. That guy has gotten banged up this series.
Fuck you Price. Grandy didn’t hit #3000 off you.
At least Price’s night is done.
I bet Price would give anything to have that pitch back. If he didn’t plunk Grandy, he’d still be in the game.
I know it wasn’t on purpose, I’m just pissed that Grandy got hit.
Between fouling a ball off his foot yesterday, his calf earlier in this game and now taking one in the numbers, I’d say it’s safe bet Grandy gets tomorrow off.
Oof, that 2-1 was the pitch to hit.
Yeah, Tex tried doing too much with it.
When was this pitcher in the Yankees system?
He was then drafted by the New York Yankees in the 24th round of the 2002 amateur draft and began his professional career the following season.
He played for the GCL Yankees in 2003, going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in five games (one start), striking out 12 and allowing only five hits in nine innings. In 2004, he pitched for the GCL Yankees and Staten Island Yankees, going a combined 2-0 with a 2.75 ERA in 15 games (one start). Despite posting a sub-3.00 ERA, he was released by the Yankees after the 2004 season.
WAY TO FUCKING GO CASHMAN!!!
Thanks.
According to the Rays announcers, he lost his desire to play- he was also released by the Brewers.
Left to sell real estate apparently. Didn’t work out.
Tex is not a good hitter anymore.
I’m sorry.
Im sorry that you seem to have no sense of what a good hitter is.
Great hitter, fine but good? Come on
Batting 250 in his last 1000 plate appearances.
Not worth the money he’s being paid at all.
Reggie Jackson was a career .262 hitter. Slightly above average player?
Blasphemy
Luis Polonia was a career .293 hitter.
No you cant bring the money into the point.
He’s a good hitter, not a great hitter.
Would you have considered Dave Kingman to be a good hitter
Dave Kingman isn’t even on the same planet as Teixeira. That comparison makes zero sense.
Exactly. This guy considers Tex to not be a good hitter anymore. I actually should have gone with Reggie Jackson.
Tex might be having Swisheritis. Great from the right side, bad from the left side.
Dear Joe,
Please give Tex three days off. He is looking like Jorge Posada right now.
That is all.
He did have two hits tonight
Should have been 5 or 6, easy.
One hit.
one hit, one strike out…. another 1-4 night and striking out when he should be getting on.
He can’t hit anyone right now…..well unless Sergio Mitre were to pitch for another team.
He has three hits in his last seven plate appearances, and two are doubles.
How dare he not be 7-7.
5 strike outs and 1 RBI…..and more pop ups than doubles.
What?
All kidding aside. Tex needs to sit for a game or two.
That was a bad swing at ball four, but Tex has had a good game overall.
defensively he is always has a good game. His swings and misses along with just poor AB’s are not good.
He DID hit an opposite field double.
Boony-one of Larry Rothschildren!
/reaching
Longo you’re not even curveball worthy. You get the heat and you like it.
Jesus, right down the middle too.
D-Rob is so awesome.
It’s the front leg extension Coney!
Wonder if Robertson will throw the change to Joyce.
That’ll do.
K-Rob
David Robertson is fucking phenomenal.
Golden Sombrero for Matt Joyce.
He looks very much like a guess hitter.
That fact that’s he still hitting in the .290′s is spectacular considering the terrible slump he’s in. He was overachieving in the first half. Like much of this Rays offense.
D-Rob brings Joy.
David Robertson is unstoppable.
Love that he didn’t throw a single curve.
Can someone post the piece on DRob’s mechanics and leg extension? It was a good one.
David Robertson is the David Robertson of his generation.
Hahaha for some reason, I really enjoyed this.
If I told you that D-Rob would be the most effective player from that 06 draft in a yankee perspective and who they drafted. No way you guys believe me right?
I mean at least so far.
No way I would have believed you, and would probably be sad as well. A lot of talent in that draft…
Joba still has a fairly sizable lead over Robertson.
This is another reason why D-Rob cant come in in the seventh as opposed to others.
His pitch count.
It took him about 20 pitches to get through one inning. His pitch count for one inning is very high. Imagine adding an out or two to that. It could be 25-30 pitches a night. Heading into Scott Procter territory.
Robertson doesn’t have to to pitch multiple innings if Girardi uses him as a fireman. He can come in to get one or two outs, and have Wade take the 8th.
And if Wade blows the eighth, everybody would screaming at Girardi, about why was Robertson not used instead of Wade?
Some people would complain about it, but not me personally.
who cares what people scream about? it just makes sense to use your best relievers in the biggest situations
who cares what people scream about? it just makes sense to
use your best relievers in the biggest situationsget the best matchups possible.Robertson should be pitching the highest leverage instance outside of the starting pitcher. So in the 7th, with 2 men on and the game is on the line, I would prefer to have my best non-closer reliever out there. The 8th could be a 1,2,3 inning for all we know, but I’d rather have my best reliever in the toughest situation. I’m sure someone would complain, but statistically it makes the most sense.
Who says he needs to come out and pitch the eighth? This is the problem with thinking along with bullpen roles. Bring him in the 7th if the game is on the line. Pitch count has nothing to do with it. Let Logan/Noesi/Wade get you through a fresh 8th with the bases cleared.
Or you could just use him to get the biggest outs and get out of jams, and then use lesser relievers to start innings with nobody on base
How is Derek Jeter even a choice on that Player of the Game poll?
Cano is taking this fool yard.
Orrrrr not.
With all the fuss and nonsense over Joba’s role… you’re probably looking at the future closer right here. The walks are troublesome, but that’s offset by extreme strikeout numbers. He seems like the kind of pitcher who can throw strikes consistently. It’s not like he gets out of whack mechanically. It’s just a matter of challenging hitters
Everyone complains thet D-Rob can’t close because he throws too many pitches, nut there have been many closers, like KRod, that also make it interesting and throw lots of pitches and still close.
Spoiled by Mo for all these years…
Nobody’s perfect. But I think it’s pretty obvious who the second best reliever on the Yankees is. That’s who should close.
Did Drob even bust out the curve once that inning?
No; all fastballs. Bad. Ass.
Joe Maddon is seriously bringing in a lefty for Chris Dickerson? What an ass.
He’s from the LaRussa school of managering.
I think it had more to do with the 8 out 9 last pitches being balls and walking two guys.
BUT IT’S CHRIS DICKERSON!
I can haz Laird?
Defensive replaement please?
For who?
Who would play RF?
Which leads me to one question I’ve had: Does Grandy ever play the corners? I can’t recall seeing it as a Yankee at least.
NEVAH!!!!!!!!!
Sincerely,
Joe Girardi
Tomorrow’s lineup:
CF Gardner
SS Jeter
1B Tex
2B Cano
RF Swisher
DH Posada
3B Nunez
LF Dickerson
C Cervelli
Book it. Grandy is gettin the day off & Dickerrson starts v. the righty, not Jones
The double bench certainly is a Girardi trademark.
At least he is doing it during CC’s starts this year when you don’t need a ton of runs. He did it constantly during AJ’s starts last year so that even if AJ pitched a gem (unlikely) he didn’t have a chance.
especially on days that CC starts I’ve been noticing.
Seen a few CC starts where the 7,8,9 included both Ramiro Pena AND Cervelli
Wait why the hell is Dickerson batting for Gardner?
Jonez
Oh my bad. I thought Gardner was batting before Nunez.
Dickerson was batting for Jones.
DICKERSON WAS A DEFENSIVE REPLACEMENT for Jones.
fucking caps lock
GIVE NOONEY TEH GREEN LIGHT
INSURANCE!
EDDDIIIEEEEEEEE
Is Nunez completely useless anymore?
ok, ok, only defensively
In the field? He’s good at giving his pitchers some more batters to throw to.
Nunie puts the final nail in the coffin
Damn. Nunez just ruined Mariano’s save.
Man, if that snuck past Joyce that’s an inside the parker.
Yay for insurance runs.
Now there won’t be any comments about them not taking full advantage offensively and all that.
Yes, I know that was already said.
Nuney!!!! Way to go, Buddy!!!!!
This has been an anti-hater night. Logan getting the job done, Nunez being productive, Girardi making the right moves.
way to fight it off nunez!
Nunez is fine as long as no one hits the ball to him.
Mo in a 4 run game? We might need him tomorrow with CC vs Shields.
Not if CC goes 9.
Probably Girardi wants the game badly. No mishaps.
May have had Mariano all warmed up already anyway.
Another fair point.
Mo taking one for the team.
Dear Matt Imbrogs,
Where was that trade value calculator you talked about on the Pulse Network? I can’t remember the website or where you mentioned it in the video. Thanks bud.
http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/.....ator-32198
Found the article here. Thanks anyway.
Lol, Coney tellin it like it is.
He’s probably in because they didn’t have enough time to get someone else warm. Ayala got up but sat down soon after.
REVENGE!
9 pitches, 9 strikes, 3 outs. Too easy.
Rays last 7 outs 5k 2gb. BOOYAH
Curtis was like “Dont hit me!”
good win for us tonight after a tough loss. ohh and do not forget twomorrow CC pitches.
apparently Mo is the most prolific K-out pitcher in history of baseball, espn gameday says he has a career total of 101407242 K-outs
Mo also has the best career adjusted ERA+ of any pitcher in history.
1. Mariano Rivera 205
2. Pedro Martinez 154
3. Jim Devlin 151
4. Lefty Grove 148
5. Walter Johnson/Hoyt Wilhelm/Dan Quisenberry 147
Is a gennleman with a bro-stache invited to this partayyyyyyyyy?
Only if he’s ready to rock!
Russ Martin took that commercial waaaay to seriously.
Curtis future MLB Commish?

No, just more bickering amongst the commenters
Matsui hit his 500th pro HR (Japan and US) tonight. Congrats to him.
He was always a class act.
