Heee’s back! Soriano activated off DL

Trade Rumors: Ubaldo, Betances, Brown, Kuroda
Game 103: Welcome the O's

As expected, the Yankees have activated Rafael Soriano off the disabled list today. Steve Garrison was sent back to Double-A Trenton to clear a 25-man roster spot, but I have no idea what the corresponding 40-man move was. They did have an open spot earlier in the week, but Eric Chavez took that. Anyway, Joe Girardi said they plan to ease Soriano back into things, but who knows what that means.

Update: The official site says that Sergio Mitre has been placed on the 60-day DL, so he’s the 40-man move. He was sent for an MRI on his injured shoulder earlier today.

I may be the only one, but I LOVE Rafael Soriano. If he can pitch like he did last year, which I think he can, that would be huge in the long run.

Does anyone believe there is trade value in Soriano?

Perhaps let him pitch well tonight, move him to a contender ( ie Texas or Philly ) for prospects/ trade chip, and put Hughes in the “8th inning spot”?

    • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

no chance. he hasn’t pitched well this season, plus why would you help Texas and Philly?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He has no trade value with that contract.

      • mike

I was hoping the loser in the Heath Bell sweepstakes would become desperate, and with Soriano’s self-opt out its a big incentive for him to pitch well down the stretch.

so many closers seem to have the mental block of needing to “close” to pitch well….

That’s a joke, he was only a full-time closer with the Rays. It isn’t like Soriano hasn’t set up before; that’s just a stupid MSM narrative. And no matter how well Soriano pitches the rest of this season, with his first-half performance plus the injury there is no way he’s getting more than his current contract for next year. He isn’t opting out, and he isn’t going anywhere.

For what it’s worth, if he’s the real Soriano again, he can help the Yanks win a championship. That’s more valuable than a bench piece or prospect this year, which is all the Yankees might get back from a contender.

          • mike

Its hardly a joke – its something that the players, both active and retired, have stated about the position time and time again. While the msm parrots that line, its not a false narrative if the players themselves believe it.

Additionally, if Soriano went to a contender and was dominant, he could chose to opt out and find a better deal. He has 2/21 after this year…I’m sure he could find a 3 or 4 year deal with less AV but more certainty. It will be a weak closer’s market this year.

            • Ted Nelson

“its not a false narrative if the players themselves believe it.”

Baseball players are notoriously superstitious. If Barry Bonds thought sticking his bat up his rectum before the game made him hit better that would not necessarily make it true. Players believe in rally caps, lucky socks… a lot of stuff I don’t really impacts their performance.

    • http://twitter.com/waybj Brandon W

I don’t see it. I don’t see Hughes fooling enough people to set up with his current stuff, and I don’t see any team taking on that contract right now.

Also, the Yankees aren’t sellers, they’re contenders. No contender is going to give up a vital piece that would help them win a championship for a reliever; also, the Yankees aren’t giving up a valuable relief arm for a prospect who won’t help them win this year.

      • mike

I recall Hughes throws alot harder in the first few innings even after coming off the DL, and he did light up the gun in 2009 out of the pen.

Soriano wasnt fooling anyone either, and even his rehab (taken with a grain of salt) was hardly dominating.

I only think the Yanks would be sellers if the pieces they got back would not help them more than what they gave up – and if they ultimately wind up with a starter better than Hughes/Nova/Garcia, they would have traded from a strength (their pen) to fill a more pressing need (starting pitching)

        • Ted Nelson

I think the chances of Soriano getting traded are 0… and I also have questions about Hughes. Barely the same pitcher at the moment he was in 2009. Short-arms it from his ear. I think he can improve, but I don’t think moving to the pen would fix his ills.

What can I do to make Betances turn into Dom Brown?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Step One: Turn on the PS3
      Step Two: ???
      Step Three: Profit!

      • Zach

I know we’re going to raise the debt ceiling, but Dom Brown’s is still higher.

      • Crime Dog

I’ve seen this a couple of times, what is it from?

      Take a lot of acid

  • Grit Storage

Yankees.com 40-man roster page has Mitre on the 60-day DL now.

    I guess that’s the move.

  • Bronx Byte

If Cashman deals for another bullpen LH, Luis Ayala is most likely to be sent down. They seem to trust Cory Wade more.

    • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

i agree. Luis Ayala has only been good in mop up spots. Wade has had his success in more pressure spots.

      • Rick in Boston

With Mitre on the 60-day, Ayala is probably going to become the mop-up guy.

    • Ted Nelson

Between the two probably, but could also send Noesi back down to AAA to start.

  • UYF1950

Mitre, should be placed on someone’s else’s roster. Period.

    • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

      yeah in an independent league.

    • bottom line

“Mitre, should be placed on someone’s else’s roster. Period.”

      Best post of the day.

  • Angryankee

Mitre is cashman’s way of saying FU to everyone on RAB.

  • dennis

Use him in the 6th inning maybe he will get so mad he will opt out.(not holding my breath)

  • Cory Wade’s emergence

    Dont waste my potential

  • Jetrer

Any roster move that keeps Mitre off the Yankees for 2 months is a good move.
Any move that keeps Mitre off the Yankees roster permanently would be even better.

  • Bob Michaels

When Nova is activated the Yankees will have to make move Who will it be?

    • Thomas Cassidy

Called up, not activated. It will probably Noesi.
