Jeter, Grandy rake in All-Star Game bonuses

By

The All-Star Game is just a glorified exhibition for us fans, but to the players it’s quite a bit more. For some, it can be a cash cow. Take Derek Jeter for example. Despite having more money that he’ll ever be able to spend, the Cap’n received a $500,000 bonus from the Yankees for being named to the Midsummer Classic. He was the biggest breadwinner this year, but Curtis Granderson could end up making the most from his All-Star nomination. Grandy not only gets a $25,000 bonus, but his 2013 option increases from $13M to $13.5M as well. A total of 15 players received bonuses for their All-Star nods, and Maury Brown has the full list right here.

Look at them now. They’re getting PAY-PER.

  2. OldYanksFan says:

    Yup… poor Derek. I guess %17m really wasn’t enough.

Someday when I have a kid and he asks me about derek jeter, I’ll tell him “son, he was one of the greatest Yankees of all time. I’ll always remember fondly about how I spent his final years with the team endlessly complaining about how much money he was getting paid”

    • Foghorn Leghorn says:

I was at the Trenton game the other night and at the end of the game Kei Igawa walked from the pen to the dugout. I was about to explain to my kids who Igawa was and how much he was paid and how badly he really sucked…and then I figured I would be a bad Dad for telling such a depressing story.

derek jeter shouldnt get that bonus if he doesnt go to the all star game, derek jeter should donate that bonus to eduardo nuñez

    all hail eduardo nuñez

  5. Foghorn Leghorn says:

It actually makes me sick to think baseball players still have clauses in their contracts that allow for these types of bonuses.

    • infernoscurse says:

it makes me sick that most of these people make more money in one year while playing for a couple of hours and make more than cops and teachers will make in 20 years

      • Foghorn Leghorn says:

It makes me sick that I no longer get a sick feeling when I see these salary figures! I’ve become numb to this nonsense.

It actually makes me sick to see all these so called fans ragging on Jeter after all the years of great performance he has provided.

  7. David, Jr. says:

Richly deserved by Grandy, who has positively impacted about 25 games.

  8. usty says:

I believe Grandy also has a clause that increases that option if he finishes Top 5 in MVP balloting this year or next year. Good chance that happens too.

The all star bonus actually vindicates jeters contract amount… It proves that he’s still hugely popular amongst many casual fans who don’t particularly care what his average is. their buying power is also very real, his marketing value seems not to have suffered

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

No not at all. Now I don’t work for the Yankees but I doubt Brian Cashman signed Jeter for 17 million dollars so he can fucking play in the All Star Game or get the attention of more fans.

This isn’t The New York Jeters.

      • Mike c says:

I sincerely hope you don’t work for the Yankees. You have no idea about how a business works, baseball teams make a lot of money. One if the ways they do this is by marketing their star players. You don’t consider jeter one obviously, bit millions of casual fans do… And they buy things that team profits from. Which is where

        • Mike c says:

… streams of revenue come from that goes towards a 220M payroll

        • Rookie says:

I guess the other 29 or so general managers and owners of MLB teams have no idea about how a business works either — because I don’t think a single one of them tried to bid the gold mine named Derek Jeter away from the Yankees.

Perhaps there’s even a business opportunity for you here, Mike, to teach those poor clueless owners and execs how business works.

  15. Mark says:

Massive post fail!!!! Thanks iPod. Sorry people.

  16. Truth says:

So this may prevent jeter from sucking balls the rest of this year how?

  18. Urban says:

Yet Jeter and A-Rod pulled out of the All-Star game tonight, following Mo yesterday. Granderson and Cano still there, but the biggest star power were pulled.

The Yankees are angry about something here.

I know, I know. All three have some lingering injury issues, but that wouldn’t stop them from showing up in the past. There is something going on here. The All-Star game is a marketing event. It’s about ratings. Pulling three future HOF players, including Jeter who will be right at 3,000 hits, from the game is sending a message. Just not sure why.
