Updated: Yankees sign J.C. Romero
ByThe Yankees intend to sign J.C. Romero if the Nationals do not call him up to the big leagues by Friday, so says Buster Olney. Romero’s minor league pact with Washington has a July 15th opt-out, and right now his intention is to secure his release and sign a minor league deal with New York. I’m all for it, especially on a minors deal. Romero is fantastic when used properly, which means as a true lefty specialist and not at all against righties. And now we play the waiting game.
Update (12:17 a.m.): Ken Davidoff reports that this is all but a done deal. The Yankees, he said a few minutes ago, will complete a minor league deal with Romero on Thursday. The club is “looking hard for LH relief options.”
Update (1:15 p.m.): The Nationals have released Romero and he has officially signed with the Yankees according to Olney. There’s a chance he could pitch for Triple-A Scranton tonight.

Is it Noesi or Mitre who goes away?
Unfortunately Noesi
Gotta hope for Mitre getting the boot.
What is this obsession with Sergio Mitre!!!???? Hes had about two good moments with this team, the rest of his time being one unending nightmare after another. Dump his ass
Girardi fucked him in the ass and hasnt looked back since
Classy.
There is no theory of evolution, just a list of creatures Sergio Mitre allows to live.
The last post (Getting to know you) explains it all.
Of course now that this information is public, the Nationals will call him up.
Because when the Yankees acquisition of Gordon became public, the Phillies called him up.
Wait, what?
That’s different because he’s asian now.
Would rather have Noesi go back to Scranton where he would actually be useful instead of rotting away and barley being used out of the pen. Having him stay up here and pitch every 2 weeks is doing nothing towards his development.
I agree. But Mitre sucks ass. Nobody likes him but Girardi. He only appears in mop up games or when it’s 9-1 in the ninth in which he gives up 3-4 runs etc. They can find someone to do that job and make a spot start.

Girardi loves him, but only uses him in blow outs… How’s that work?
That doesn’t seem true.
I agree but Mitre sucks ass… sucks ass… ucks asss… asss… asss
Another Lefty. Yay.
Uhhh, stop stressing? A minor league deal is called a minor league deal for a reason. IT DOES NOT EFFECT THE MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER!!!!! That is until he gets called up. You can stop this stuff now over who goes.
(I think you mean AFFECT)
So this has to come pretty close to tampering, unless the Nats agreed to it.
I would guess the Nats gave the Yanks permission to do this a la the Phillies and Brian Gordon.
I hate Mitre like everyone else. But you need one sh!t-nugget to be a true mop-up guy out there. I’m not big on using a guy I’d like to see progress in development used for latrine-duty.
Send Noesi down to improve, and let Mitre sit out there & pitch once every 9 days (hopefully).
This. Noesi would be better served getting innings down in Scranton while Mitre toils at the back end of the ‘pen.
Fuck a minor league deal, replace Boone Logan immediately.
Logan has been much better recently. He’ll be fine. PLus, I think we might actually get Marte back by August. Supposedly he is throwing bullpen sessions now. Next would come batting practice then simulated games then a rehab assignment.
‘Twould be nice to have Logan, Romero, and Marte all on the September expanded roster to have an audition to see who can be the postseason LOOGY.
Three men enter, one man leaves.
Don’t forget Pedro Feliciano.
yeah… wait… ummm, who?
Meh. Judging all those 3 pitchers, one of whom is returning from an injury, based on one month’s performance to determine a playoff spot? Not sure I’d be on board with that.
Replace “J.C.” with “Ricky” and this little aside would become a lot more interesting…
And would cease to be an aside.
It’s a done deal
In other breaking news, Elton John is gay.
WAIT, WHAT?!??!??!
That’s great, I don’t trust Boone down the stretch. Solid signing.
So how long before Romero is ready to be called up and Noesi goes back down to get some real work in?
A week or two?
He last pitched on the 10th, and was used regularly during July before that. I don’t see why he couldn’t come up tonight…
As an aside, he faced 7 LHB and 17 RHB in the minors for the Nationals (1 K and 6 GB from the LHB). Why is he still being used against right handers?
I don’t know how often LOOGYs are implemented in the minors. I mean I’m sure there are situations, but they may often just be trying to eat innings.
sounds about right. loosen him up, 15 IP or so, and he’ll be up.
assuming he, well you know, isn’t shitty or anything.
Not surprised by the move, but still not excited for it. LOOGYs are pretty much the most useless roster spot in all of baseball maybe except the ROOGY.
Graeme Lloyd wants a word with you.
His .3 WAR and negative WPA with the Yankees are making me quiver.
NO.
ROOGYs and mop up guys are the most useless. LOOGYs are right up there with 5th and 6th inning guys.
JC Romero is “fantastic” vs. lefties?
Really? Fantastic?
Gee…then I can’t wait to see him in pinstripes.
I don’t know about fantastic, but pretty good… and awful against righties:

Seems pretty fantastic to me.
Why does he need to start at Scranton? I don’t understand why he isn’t coming right up to the major league roster.
