Put it out of reach, Tex.

  13. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I’d love to see Tex hit a weak little pop fly over the monster so much right now.

  14. Dino Velvet says:

Beckett only went 101 pitches. That he couldn’t go more in a big game tells me he’s not at 100%.

  15. Jon says:

please walk cano in for another run

nothing is greater than cano walking a run in

  16. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Blow this open

  17. JFH says:

I never saw the Gardenr HR coming. Totally caught me off guard.

  18. Cy Pettitte says:

    do some fucking damage Robbie

I sure hope Cano can drive in a few.

  20. Dennis says:

  21. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Base hit Robbie, come on.

PS, please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD don’t swing at the first pitch.

  22. pat says:

Cano def gonna swing at first pitch after that walk.

  23. Arod/tips/the/best says:

Bust it open robby tatoo that f ing wall

  24. Winston Smith says:

Ripe spot for Cano to swing at the 1st pitch.

  25. Xstar7 says:

C’mon Yankees, don’t let this opportunity to blow the game open go wasted.

  26. Brent says:

Franklin Morales, Greg Maddux… You say tomato, I say tomato.

  27. Justin says:

Come on Robbie. Put this game out of reach!

  28. Jetrer says:

Cano knows he should take a strike here, right?

  29. Jimmy McNulty says:

The part of Terry Francona that asks that is his brain.

  30. mbonzo says:

Leaving this guy in to face Robbie simply because he’s a lefty is definitely stupid.

  31. IRF says:

And people though Logan was bad

  32. Ivan says:

Dont do him any favors Cano.

  33. Jimmy McNulty says:

    Fucken Robbie.

  34. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  35. Xstar7 says:

Way to bail out Morales, Robbie.

  36. Brent says:

    God Robbie…

  37. HD says:

Way to let him off the hook

  38. wow says:

    meh… just hold on now

  39. V says:

What happened to the Robinson Cano from 2010?

  40. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Good one.

  41. Rockstar4Life says:

SoRoMo time. Shut them down and show everyone again how the Yankee bullpen is the shit.

  42. Dino Velvet says:

Robbie had a perfect hanging breaking ball.

  43. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Scutaro would have gotten a hit there…

  44. Arod/tips/the/best says:

Sori/robo/mo lets end this game and give ESPN A NICE SHIT SANDWICH TO EAT.

  45. JFH says:

Tough part of the order due up.

  46. a.hinds says:

was the pitch a strike that robbie hit?

  47. Kostas says:

Gonzales or Youk needs to get drilled.

  48. karel capek says:

I’m hoping Bobby Valentine busts out Rainbow Connection sometime this broadcast.

  49. Jon says:

lol that promo totally shows the red sox winning the game

  50. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    9 more outs.

  51. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

This game hasn’t exactly gone the way we drew it up, but you can’t ask for anything more than a lead in the 7th and a chance to go Soriano –> Robertson –> Rivera

    Shut it down boys

  52. Xstar7 says:

Time to earn your bacon, Sori.

  53. Karim Garcia says:

    1,2,3 – let’s go Soriano

  54. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Who’s that little kid hanging out in the Yankees dugout next to Girardi?

  55. Jerome S. says:

Can we start calling Soriano MFIKY? When can we call him MFIKY?

  56. The Fallen Phoenix says:

    1) I don’t think anyone in this booth knows who David Robertson is, or knows he’s been one of the top-5 relievers in baseball this year.

    2) Whoever put that pre-inning highlight reel together clearly doesn’t know what the score says.

  57. Mister Delaware says:

Did they bring up the Ortiz-whining-about-an-RBI moment from earlier this week or does Soriano just make a more interesting story?

    • AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I think that Soriano makes a way more interesting story.

But then again, I’ve been waiting to hear someone talk about the Yankees all night, and I already know that Papi’s a little bitch.

  58. what? says:

seriously? he has his own rules??

  59. Jon says:

    wow bobby v is annoying

  60. Ivan says:

Yikes got away with a hanger there Soriano.

  61. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Fenway Park’d

  62. The Fallen Phoenix says:

lol @ John Lackey being the Red Sox #3 starter.

  63. Cy Pettitte says:

Lackey is the #3 biggest douche, not sure about him being the #3 pitcher.

  64. wow says:

Attetion Everyone: Pennants are won with bullpens. That is all.

  65. Karim Garcia says:

  66. Cy Pettitte says:

another 1-2-3 for Sori, is this the return of MFIKY?

  67. bobtaco says:

    Nice job, MFIKY.

  68. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    MFIKY ftw

  69. swishers fauxhawk says:

    I approve.

  70. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Insurance runs por favor!!

  71. YankeesJunkie says:

Soriano looking like a beast since coming back from the DL.

  72. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

What the heck is Youk complaining about?

  73. Arod/tips/the/best says:

    Sit down toxic avenger

  74. IRF says:

Soriano is pitching a perfect game

  75. Ethan says:

You guys that are stuck with ESPN, turn on WCBS and listen to the game and watch the game on tv muted.

  76. Dela G says:

    Great job, sori

  77. Xstar7 says:

Let’s see if the Yankees can get some insurance off of uber-reliever Danyal Bahhd.

  78. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    We can haz insurance?

  79. pat says:

    Insurance runs plz.

  80. Dino Velvet says:

the fans have such sad sullen expressions, belying an inferiority complex.

and you can hear a pin drop in the ESPN announcer’s booth.

  81. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

“let’s go Yankees” in Fenway. Awesome.

  82. Jerome S. says:

I’ve definitely come around on Soriano. His lengthy injury gave me time to simmer down about his outrageous contract/mild ineffectiveness.

    • YankeesJunkie says:

His contract is terrible regardless, but if he can go out and dominate like Robertson has this year then people will be very quiet on Levine’s mistake.

  83. Randy Levine says:

    Attention RAB readers.

    I’m waiting for my apology.

  84. Esteban says:

Last time they chanted Yankees suck, Gardner hit his HR. Continue the trend Swish.

  85. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Chavez bomb here.

  86. IRF says:

Bayer is an incredibly cheap company

  87. Cy Pettitte says:

Nova giving AJ some lessons on how to pitch.

  88. RkyMtnYnk says:

Oh no, Burnett is talking to Nova, ahh, he might get infected hehehe

  89. wtfh says:

nova is this guy’s top 5? good to know….

  90. Dino Velvet says:

Yankees hit too many home runs in this game.

  91. bonestock94 says:

    This pace is excrutiantingly slow

  92. mt says:

Unfortunately years from now Burnett will hear about the 13-1 game where he could not finish 5 innings for the win. It will become shorthand like the “Jeter flip play”

On another note, Posada is also saying to Chavez “I can strike out 3 times too.”

  93. wow says:

best curveball I’ve ever seen: AJ Burnett’s. His stuff is ELECTRIC!!!!11!

  94. Cy Pettitte says:

    Dan Wheeler? really? ok.

  95. Total Dominication says:

  96. Jon says:

posada on the bunch and the stash striking out left and right

    jesus time

  97. Matty Ice says:

that was ball 4,5 and 6

  98. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

wtf Dan Wheeler is like their bullpen John Lackey.

  99. Ivan says:

    Alright do ya thing D-Rob.

  100. Xstar7 says:

    Let’s go K-RoBB

  101. Jerome S. says:

“Maybe a few too many walks” Maybe you’re a bit dumb.

  102. Brandon says:

ugh, I hate how they ruin a good song that really isnt even theres, earth to boston fans, Neil Diamond is a New Yorker.

  103. Dino Velvet says:

Good times never been so gooood…

  104. IRF says:

Jeter will never move from the SS position. Never biatches

  105. Jerome S. says:

Because a)bunting is stupid and b) Ortiz is comically slow. It’s simple, Bobby.

    • StanfordBen says:

Actually, is that really the answer? Same for Teix and others who get the shift? I’m sure there’s a reason they don’t do it, but I don’t get it. If you successfully (or even nearly successfully) did it once, they’d probably stop shifting on you, which apparently is worth like 50 BA points. What’s the reason?

    • Sarah says:

I was dying. I’m thinking DRob could grab the ball and throw it over to first well before Big Papi can get to 1st.

  106. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Papi with the gritty hustle

  107. mbonzo says:

Wow second pitch was down the middle.

  108. Jon says:

    that was a ball?

    robots please

  109. CP says:

Hmmmmm… right down the middle and called a ball. That sounds about right for this game.

  110. jay says:

that was a strike. thanks for framing, russell.

  111. Total Dominication says:

  112. HD says:

    Fucking Crawford.

  113. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Why can’t David Ortiz bunt to get on base?

    1) A homer is way more valuable than a bunt single
    2) Ortiz is fat and slow, and the pitcher/catcher would have ages to get over and field the ball and still be able to throw him out.
    3) Ortiz is fat and slow, so you’ll probably have to pinch run for him even if he does get on with a bunt.

Seriously, listening to this stuff it’s hard to believe that Bobby V managed a team to a pennant.

    • jay says:

      1) you ignored the probabilities and relative difficulties of the two outcomes.
      2) the idea is a hard bunt up the line to where the 3rd base would be playing. ortiz could walk to first.
      3) losing ortiz at this point in the game would not be that big of a deal

Obviously, Ortiz couldn’t execute this (I’m sure he’s never practiced) but it’s a absolutely a fair point to raise, especially leading off a late inning in a one run game.

      • AaronGuielWithASmile says:

The probability of Ortiz hitting a home run is significantly higher than the probability of Ortiz dropping a perfect bunt down the line (and make no mistake, Ortiz would have to place it perfectly to have any chance of beating the throw.)

Additionally, losing Ortiz is a really big deal. If you’re trying to get a bunt single, then it’s pretty obvious that you’re playing for the tie–I have a feeling that Boston would want Ortiz’s bat if the game goes to extras.

        • jay says:

Very few things are on a baseball field are less likely than a HR. Ortiz has hit a homer less than 5% of his PAs on the season. I might agree with you that as is, Ortiz would struggle putting one down, but the point Bobby was making was that practicing that bunt would be worthwhile. If Ortiz could be trusted to put it in play hard enough, there’s no way Jeter gets there and throws him out.

And if I could increase my chances of seeing extra innings and at least postponing the loss, I’d do it gladly (even if it meant I lost a good hitter)

  114. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    wtf Crawford

  115. Ivan says:

Smh….Now catch Crawford the next couple games, go for like 1-17 or something like that.

  116. Jerome S. says:

I dislike complaining about the umps because it’a cop-out and we really only do it when we’re losing, but OH MY GOD.

  117. Xstar7 says:

What is up with Carl Crawford? 9 for his last 10? And of course he waited for this series to hit his hot streak.

  118. CBean says:

    Why does Crawford own us?

  119. Rockstar4Life says:

Sick of seeing Crawford get on again and again in this series.

  120. Jerome S. says:

    Robertson just struck out Martin!

  121. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Come on DRob, get Varitek out.

  122. wtfh says:

well that wasn’t a great play

  123. Xstar7 says:

Shit. Please don’t give up a single now D-Rob.

  124. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Huh, looked like Reddick made contact there.

Bear down K-Rob, you got this.

  125. wow says:

what’s the rule on the strike out in the dirt again?

  126. Ivan says:

    Lets go D-Rob.

  127. Cy Pettitte says:

if DRob can’t get Tek here I give up.

  128. mt says:

No matter how hot CC has become, if Varitek gets a hit it is our own fault. Must not happen.

  129. Xstar7 says:

C’mon D-Rob. You can get the corpse of Jason Varitek out.

  130. HD says:

    Well, shit.

  131. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Jesus fuck.

  132. wow says:

    wow Russ.

  133. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Come on DRob

  134. Jon says:

    come on martin

  135. Ivan says:

Wow, can’t remember Russell fucking up like that.

  136. ItsATarp says:

    Jesus christ Martin

  137. Brent says:

    Shades of Posada

  138. mt says:

If he scores on a wild pitch/passed ball, I will scream.

  139. Jerome S. says:

Suck our nuts, you classless monkeys.

  140. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Scissorhands has it! 3 outs to go!

  141. mbonzo says:

    Yes! Thanks Varitek.

  142. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Phew [emphatically]

  143. swishers fauxhawk says:

Captain Varitek with those gritty intangibles.

  144. wtfh says:

Way to get out of that jam D-Rob

  145. Xstar7 says:

Another clutch pop up by Jason Varitek. That’s why he’s the captain.

  146. Cy Pettitte says:

DRob! ok, now, we Mo today, we win today. das it.

  147. JFH says:

    Varitek was pawned.

  148. Jetrer says:

score some runs now please, this game is giving me an ulcer

  149. mt says:

Score at least one run, please.

  150. Ivan says:

    Lets Go!!!!!

  151. Rockstar4Life says:

Robertson just wanted him at 3rd because he rolls like that.

  152. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    K-Rob is a beast.

I’d love to blow this game open here and give Mo the night off.

  153. Dela G says:

I just did a shitload of fistpumping there

  154. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Yankee Captain >>>>>>> Red Sux captain

  155. murg says:

    Jason Varitek-captain clutch

  156. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

This James Brown Gatorade commercial makes me wanna get up offa that thang and make me strut my shit.

  157. Winston Smith says:

And here comes the gushing over Jonathan Papelbon.

  158. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Let’s pound Papeldouche this inning.

  159. CBean says:

wow that half-inning left me nauseous as fuck. I’d really like one more run from the Yankees.

  160. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I didn’t know ERAs had slashes in them now. Nice typo ESPN.

  161. Xstar7 says:

    Oh look, it’s Pap Smear.

  162. StanfordBen says:

Ha, Bobby V was like, “Screw K/BB, look at those saves! Now that’s a stat that tells you something!”

  163. swishers fauxhawk says:

Nice high pitch for strike 1.

  164. Justin says:

WTF are they talking about in the booth?

  165. Jerome S. says:

    Bobby Valentine is batshit insane.

  166. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Gardy is not a 20 HR guy Bobby STFU

    • Cy Pettitte says:

maybe he’s like Ichiro. he could hit tons of HRs but he just doesn’t feel like it.

    • Jerome S. says:

Could you imagine if he was? He’d be way more valuable than Ellsbury, since the only difference between them is power and Gardner’s really as good or better in all other aspects of the game.

  167. wtfh says:

    Nicee Gardy!

  168. Xstar7 says:

Nice try Tacoby, but Brett is grittier than you.

  169. Dela G says:

    Thanks for sucking, ellsbury!

  170. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Gardner is too gritty for you Ellsbury

  171. CBean says:

  172. bobtaco says:

Create some havoc on the basepaths, Gardy…

  173. Simon says:

LOL @ Varitek thinking he can throw out Gardy, let alone anyone!

  174. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I wish the Twinkies played a day game tomorrow

  175. Cy Pettitte says:

where’s Balkin Bob when you need him?

  176. Ethan says:

Love how WCBS is talking about how quiet fenway is :)

    and way to go gardener!

  177. HD says:

    Nice steal

  178. mbonzo says:

Nice try Varitek. You’ll get him next time, if there is a next time.

  179. Jerome S. says:

    really bad night for Tek.

  180. wtfh says:

21 in a row for Gardy.

  181. Xstar7 says:

Varitek didn’t even have a chance to throw out Gardner.

  182. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Varitek is thw worst defensive catcher in baseball

  183. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Jarrodson Varitekalamacchia is the best defensive catcher in baseball

  184. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Come on Grandy

  185. mbonzo says:

Dear god why do the announcers think Gardner steals 3rd with 2 out and Granderson up at the plate.

  186. CBean says:

    Please be hitting Granderson.

  187. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Let’s do dis Mo

  188. Ethan says:

Ugh the yankees are such RISP fail

  189. Xstar7 says:

    Strike them down, Mo.

  190. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Judging by his douchey facial hair, the guy in that Ford commercial is probably a Sox fan.

  191. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Longeat effing 2-1 game ever

  192. Jerome S. says:

They really do worship Mo, which sucks because I wanted more reasons to hate the booth.

  193. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Enter Sandman

    Keep Fenway silent, Mo.

  194. pat says:

Please do this Mariano. I won’t be able to go on the internet tomorrow if you don’t.

  195. Cy Pettitte says:

  196. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  197. Ethan says:

  200. Winston Smith says:

    That fucking Yankee killer.

  201. Jon says:

    really 4 for 4

  202. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Yeah, that just happened.

  203. wtfh says:

    that’s not keeping them silent…

  204. #24!!!! says:

    Shit just got real.

  205. Xstar7 says:

    Marco fucking Scutaro.

  206. Ivan says:

Ugh kinda hard to believe that wasnt out.

  207. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Nothing’s come easy tonight so far, I guess the 9th will be no exception.

    Lock it down, Mo.

  208. HD says:

    Wow close call

  209. bonestock94 says:

WTF no please no not tonight

  210. YankeesJunkie says:

    Scary Mo…just scary

  211. Winston Smith says:

Don’t blow this, Mo. We cannot lose to the Sox with our best two pitchers getting destroyed.

  212. Ethan says:

Shut fenway the fuck up mo!

  213. Kostas says:

Really? Marco Scutaro? What the fuck Mo?

  214. bobtaco says:

Who’s ready for the clutchiest, gritiest, sac fly?

  215. CBean says:

i don’t like this at all.

  216. Jerome S. says:

    Not a strike!!!???

  217. mbonzo says:

Blind umpire. This is not the time to blow calls.

  218. Ethan says:

    FUCKING PEDdroia

  219. Kostas says:

Mo is always good for a blown save against the Sox. Crap!

  220. JFH says:

Well, I am no longer surprised when Mo blows a save. Not saying it will happen, but it no longer surprises me.

  221. Rockstar4Life says:

4-4. Freaking lame. I hate Scutaro. Jut blow it already so I don’t have to stay up and watch an extra inning game.

  222. Winston Smith says:

    Fuck you, Mo. Fuck you.

  223. Brent says:

    God damn…

  224. Esteban says:

  228. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

  229. Ivan says:

  230. wow says:

    of all the days…

  231. Kostas says:

Way to go Mo. Great job! Unfucking believable. Another blown save.

  232. Winston Smith says:

We’ve got nobody in that pen. Hughes, Ayala, Noesi. We’re through. Fuck you, Mo.

  233. Jon says:

teix and cano need to go back to back

  234. teddy says:

game over because these chokers want to pitched inside, redsox are better yanks gutless

  235. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Javy’s fault

  236. V says:

I wanna go to bed :-(

  237. mbonzo says:

Hughes pitching the rest of this game?

  238. rek4gehrig says:

You have got to be kidding…

  239. Matt says:

If they lose this game, it is on Russell Martin.

Rivera made his pitch and hit the target perfectly. You simply cannot throw a Red Sox hitter an inside cutter in the 9th inning of a 1-run game at Fenway Park, and ESPECIALLY a righty hitter like Scuatro whose only power is to the pull field.

Stupid pitch, bad result. Russell Martin has called an awful game all night, and they have gotten lucky that they haven’t been burnt already by it.

    • Jerome S. says:

You only show up when shit like this happens.

Leave now, I’m already sick of you.

      • Matt says:

Not even close. Stupid pitch selection, not poor performance.

When you give them the pitch they are sitting on time and time again, what do you expect the result to be? He threw the same pitch to Pedroia and was lucky it was only a sac fly.

The infield is in, a situation in which you need to throw the ball down and away and get him to tap it to an infielder. What did Martin call? High fastballs. Stupid pitch, stupid result. It’s not a shocker to anyone who watches these games.

      • Matt says:

I don’t post just because something bad happens, I post when there are mental mistakes that slip under the radar because half of you people are unwilling to ever think about the game. If he gave up a home run, I wouldn’t be posting because that’s not anything that really stands out a ton.

        • Jetrer says:

You post because you think you are a genius and see what all of us mere peons miss and you need to educate us.
Hint: Most of the time you are completely wrong and completely talking out of your ass, but feel free to continue being a douche.

          • Matt says:

I am 100% correct here, and you know it.

You all are just too afraid to admit it because it would mean that you would have to acknowledge that you are obsessed with shooting down my posts, regardless of their content.

            • Mike Axisa says:

So what was the alternative? Pound the zone with cutters away and hope batters never make an adjustment? You’re good at saying hat was wrong but never both to say what the right move was.

              • Matt says:

Yes, in a 1 run game in the 9th inning in Fenway Park, you continue to pound the zone with cutters away.

Scutaro was taking pitches on the outer half all at bat without even coming close to taking the bat off of his shoulder. There was only one thing on his mind, and that was to try to pull the ball.

You don’t have to just throw it down and away. You can throw one up in the zone to try to get him to chase. There is no reason to give in to Scutaro in that spot.

              • Matt says:

Also, giving up a single to right field is a lot better than giving in and giving up a double or home run to left field.

            • Jetrer says:

I did not comment on the specific post, because I did not have a problem with the opinion. My problem is with the ridiculous, smarter than everyone attitude you post with, especially since most of your posts are completely wrong, and ridiculously stupid.

    • V says:

And Matt has arrived just like clockwork!

  240. Rockstar4Life says:

Great, Ayala is gonna pitch isn’t he?

  241. Nogomo says:

What the hell is going on? Why can’t anybody get Scutaro out? This is just absurd.

  242. CBean says:

i had a feeling we couldn’t expect perfection from our bullpen like this twice this series.

  243. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Fucking Mo. Why even throw in on Scutaro 1-2 after spotting the outer half?

  244. Karl Krawfid says:

    Martin should know better.

All he had to do with that Scutaro at bat was call for the cutter up.

    Fucking terrible man.

  245. Eirias says:

To paraphrase the immortal words of Tenacious D… fuck me gently.

  246. Matty Ice says:

How is it that our two most reliable pitchers always struggle against the Red Sox?

  247. pat says:

    Hughes time?

  248. Simon says:

Hey, hey, hey we all know who to blame, MITRE!

  249. Kostas says:

This is unacceptable that Mo let one of the greatest players in the league to beat him. Scutaro.

Just like the HR have gave up to him when he played for Oakland.

  250. Winston Smith says:

And fuck Orel Hershiser. “Only the green monster saved Mariano. That ball was crushed.” On Nunez’s HR which went over the monster- “That ball wasn’t hit that hard.”

  251. Ethan says:

God fucking damn it mo!! We had this game! I don’t want to have to hear about it all day tomorrow how the red sox beat Mo and the yankees

  252. wtfh says:

if we had another run it be over 3-2.

we had chances to expand the lead and did shit nothing.

  253. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Just win it in extras. Whatever.

  254. Skip says:

Well, I’m working until 2AM, at least this will keep me occupied for a couple more hours. Sigh.

  255. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Boy I’m glad it’s only 9:10 here

  256. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Whichever team loses this one is gonna feel like shit in the morning–both sides have had about a million chances to put the game away.

I’m also gonna feel like shit tomorrow for staying up until 4 in the morning to see the end of this one.

  257. Ethan says:

Red sox are going to minnesota tonight. I hope their plane crashes in flight (is that terrible?)

  258. jay says:

I know that would hurt, but Tex has to let that hit him.

  259. Greg says:

THis will make life uncomfortable for the next few days. The Media will still question us

  260. Winston Smith says:

Teixera predictably strikes out. Pop up or strike out, that’s all he’s good for.

  261. Rockstar4Life says:

That homer Tex hit yesterday was sweet, this strikeout however was not.

  262. Jerome S. says:

You ALWAYS get the out at first, Bobby’s off his meds again.

  263. Nathan says:

Mo usually blows a handful of saves a year…it seems like half are usually to the Sux.

  264. wtfh says:

now they’re talking about Nunez and his mistake…and how it will continue.

I’m pretty sure when Arod comes back he’ll know wtf to do.

  265. JobaWockeeZ says:

I remember when sucky players got out. I mean it was only a few days ago…

  266. V says:

Hughes better not be moved to the bullpen.

  267. bonestock94 says:

Good Hughes can take them to the 15th

  268. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I’m surprised that nobody’s mentioned A-Rod’s name until the 10th inning

  269. Jerome S. says:

Jesus Christ, the trolls come out of the woodwork.

  270. HD says:

    Great night for Cano

  271. Winston Smith says:

Cano with another weak groundout. How many runs has he cost us tonight? One hit with RISP wins us the ballgame.

  272. mbonzo says:

This is the most important game of the year. This team sucks. Its time for Mo and Jorge to retire.

  273. Jon says:

what is with this guys love for pedroia

    • efdhsj says:

bobby likes little boys, as does dustin’s big brother brett

      • JMK says:

Valentine may be a piss-poor announcer but saying he’s into pedophilia is wholly unnecessary (and, to the best of my knowledge, unsubstantiated if not an outright lie).

        • Cuso says:

i think they were just analaogizing Bobby’s love of Pedroia (who looks like a little boy) to Brett Pedroia’s actual little boy love.

he’s not calling Bobby a pedophile. just insulting the Pedroia family.

          No substantiation required for satire.

  275. swishers fauxhawk says:

Thanks for that ten second still image of Pedroia, ESPN

  276. Mojo says:

This game is absolutely unbearable. Wouldn’t be surprised if Ellsbury hit another walk-off.

  277. Nathan says:

These guys on ESPN sure do love them some Pedroia.

He does this right, he does little jumping cardio between plays, his breath is minty fresh…good grief.

Nice set of lips to reach his ass from the booth.

  278. Justin says:

4 hour game, and way too many shots of Pedroia jumping.

  279. Xstar7 says:

  281. Ivan says:

  282. Winston Smith says:

  283. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

If Hughes gets through this inning all the Sox have left is shit pitchers.

  284. Jerome S. says:

    woa, woa, woa, woa

    but woa.

  285. ItsATarp says:

Holy threw 9 pitches and they go to Hughes

  286. mt says:

Not expecting a lot from Hughes – will be surprised he gets out of one inning.

I have memories of 2010 All Star Game.

  287. Matt says:

Girardi is not going to leave Rivera in to face 3-4-5, after throwing 9 pitches with a day off yesterday and a day off tomorrow?

    Is he serious?

    Mind boggling.

    • bonestock94 says:

When he’s allowing hitters to make solid contact he has no business pitching. That’s all you need to see with mo.

  288. HD says:

Should’ve stuck with Mo for one more inning. Was hoping Phil would start Tuesday. Oh well.

  289. yankee_lover says:

hughes over mo what the hell is wrong wit that man can someone plz tell me

  290. KenC says:

Hughes was crazy dominant as a releiver. Lets hope he knows how to do that again

  291. pat says:

I fucking haaaaaate extra innings on the road.

  292. JobaWockeeZ says:

Place your bets on how long Hughes stays in the bullpen. I got a 20 saying til the season is over.

  293. Mike Axisa says:

NINE FUCKING PITCHES> And he can’t pitch the tenth with the off day?

    GTFO Girardi.

  294. Simon says:

What is that the second or third time swisher has looked at called strike three on a breaking ball? Geez Swisher, please atleast do something….

  295. V says:

I hope Cashman walks. Fucking imbeciles. They ruined Joba, and now they’re going to ruin Hughes. Fuck fuck fuck.

Just trade Banuelos+Betances. You assholes can’t develop pitching to save your fucking lives.

  296. Why can’t he still start Tuesday?

  297. Jerome S. says:

    Sox fans are just dumb.

  298. Cy Pettitte says:

    do work, Phil.

  299. Girardis Matchup Book says:

Bobby Valentine talking about Hughes’ slider that he threw last game… *facepalm*

    Not since A-Ball, Bobby.

  300. Kostas says:

Hate to say it, odds are very favorable for a Yankee loss. They do not handle extra innings well.

  301. mt says:

Just thought of this, that extra jumping by Pedroia on every defensive play – is that why he might have had problems with injuries in his feet? That’s a lot of extra pounding.

  302. Mojo says:

This is the type of game, because I’m so fucking deflated, that I just rather they lose so my heart can crawl back inside my chest. Potentially a shitty-ass game. Mo blows against the RS. Sad but true. All we can hope for is that Cano and Teixera go on a tear, A-Rod returns in full force, and Jesus is delivered to us from the heavens. Should this offense ever getting running on all cylinders (which always seems like a theoretical position) then these wasted opportunities will not look so glum. I think this team can finish off strong if they just play to their potential (for a change). This team will win with meteoric run production and sooner or later I think we’ll see such a display.

  303. Winston Smith says:

He threw that right in Ortiz’s wheelhouse. Throw the right pitches to these guys and you won’t get beat.

  304. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Papi should’ve bunted

  305. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Imagine Darnell McDonald scoring the winning run in this game…

  306. Jerome S. says:

I may have just crossed that point in my mind where I don’t care about the outcome so much as the time of the last pitch.

  307. Rockstar4Life says:

Eh, being in 2nd isn’t bad. The Yankees can claim guys the Red Sox want.

  308. Ivan says:

    Come on Hughes

  309. JobaWockeeZ says:

This is supposed to be scrub central but against the Yankees this is basically Murder’s Row.

  310. billysbartender says:

    ground ball please?

  311. Cy Pettitte says:

    of course.

  312. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

  319. Xstar7 says:

  323. Mike Axisa says:

    Well that was predictable.

  324. Jetrer says:

    fucking awful

  325. JobaWockeeZ says:

  326. a.hinds says:

  329. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Good call to bring in Hughes.

  330. William Wallace says:

  331. Nathan says:

Well that was a waste of a good 4 hours of my Sunday.

  332. Rockstar4Life says:

Josh Reddick. Awesome. I still hate Hughes.

  333. Jerome S. says:

    I… I don’t care. Thank God that’s over.

  334. JFH says:

    well that sucked.

  335. Justin says:

Well that was a waste of 4 hours…

  336. Kostas says:

There is your season and the net result of the playoffs. Yanks just don’t have it this year. Fuck.

  337. Nogomo says:

Wonder if this affects Phil’s job security. Also wondering how many saves Mo hasta blow before he joins Jorge.

  338. dontchaknow says:

    phil hughes everybody

  339. ItsATarp says:

Mo couldn’t have pitched after throwing 9 pitches…Obviously we go to the guy with a 6 ERA

  340. Ivan says:

Well I wonder if Hughes can still pitch Tuesday.

  341. tyy says:

Hughes with no location at all. Offense was awful this series. Time for the middle of the order to step up

  342. YankeesJunkie says:

Whatever, I remember the Yankees beating the shit out of the Indians in 07′ only to get rocked in the playoffs. This means nothing. Hopefully, Hughes still starts on Tuesday.

  343. JobaWockeeZ says:

I also remember when Mo could pitch more than 9 pitches.

  344. Winston Smith says:

Tough loss but all that matters is the postseason. We need A-Rod back, that’s for sure.

  345. HD says:

Anyone else miss the days when the Sox inevitably found ways to blow games like this?

  346. mt says:

That was quick for Hughes – defied even my low expectations.

I do not entirely blame Hughes – he should not be in the bullpen – he needs to keep starting as does Nova even if one of them has to do it in AAA.

Red Sox have three walk-offs in one-run victories on this home stand – damn!

  347. Ethan says:

This team sucks so much with RISP. When are Kevin Long going to start doing something about that? Sure they can hit the long ball but that really doesn’t help at all against good pitchers.

  348. Jason says:

This team needs a spark, idk what, but it just needs something!!

    • Mojo says:

Umm, hello . . . Jesus. This team ALWAYS plays better when youth is infused into the lineup. Jesus IS the answer. I have NO doubt about it.

      • Jason says:

Than call his ass up, i totally agree with u. But when will it happen thats the question, im heard rumors after the Boston series.

        • Mojo says:

With A-Rod back and Jesus up (potentially spelling Martin more often than not – I also like Chavez DHing) than our lineup suddenly looks better than Boston’s. This team, however, needs to figure out Beckett ASAP. The switch between last season and now, injured or not, is astounding. It also doesn’t help when your 4 and 5 hitters can’t do JACK SHIT. I swear, Teixera should be batting sixth. He’s our best hitter? He’s batting 3rd (w/ A-Rod)? WTF! It’s time to drop his ass in the lineup, bring on Jesus, and reep the rewards. Cano needs a brain massage or something because if he can show a glimmer of last season’s performance then this team is suddenly frightening. Get rid of Posada, Spell Martin, Move Teixera down in the order, Bring up Montero, and Cure Cano. But, in my opinion, it all starts with the Second Coming. THE RAPTURE!

      • Simon says:

True. When A-rod gets back and when they finally get Jesus up here, I think those will be a bit better but we can only wait until then.

  349. Simon says:

Well this stings and hurts but it ain’t the end of the world, we’ll recover don’t worry. Good night ladies, till Tuesday!

  350. Ryan says:

That was fucking terrible, but what’s worst is anyone saying season over. Go root for the cubs.

  351. efdhsj says:

gonna go jerk off now #idgafifthatwastoomuchinfo

  352. Matt says:

You can say all you want about Mo’s pitching, but he made his pitches repeatedly in that inning. When you hit the corners and they crush it, that means that you made the WRONG pitches.

There is no reason to tip their caps to Boston tonight, none whatsoever. The Red Sox deserved to lose this game, and they got lucky that Russell Martin once again had a mental lapse in game calling in a huge spot.

This isn’t a one time deal. The pointless inside slider to Ortiz Friday night could have lost them that game too. Why is Robertson throwing Varitek curveballs? A lot of questionable pitches, and they are lucky it took that long for them to get burnt by it.

    • Jerome S. says:

You ONLY show up in these games. During the eight game win streak you were completely absent.

Leave, you oaktag troll. You exist just to piss people off and I think everyone’s had it with you.

      • CMP says:

Pot meet kettle. Kettle meet pot.

      • Matt says:

If your argument is that I only show up when they lose, then why didn’t I show up yesterday?

Oh right, because admitting such would take away from your only talking point.

I post when I see something that I think stands out as a really strange decision that really baffles me. It’s a waste of my time to come here and post about guys hitting line drives all over the field in Chicago. That’s not something that needs to be discussed.

The Yankees have had some really strange pitch selection all series. That is my argument, yet yours is something completely unrelated to any of my posts. If you can’t refrain from the personal attack, then I suggest that you don’t respond, because you are embarrassing yourself with your posts.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

If you don’t have anything good to say then don’t say it at all.

    • ItsATarp says:

Yeah why the fuck did Mo throw a cutter…doesn;t he have a curveball or something?

      • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

        I think it’s past Matt’s bedtime

      • Matt says:

If this is your only argument against what I just said, then you have no right to attack my post.

But don’t worry, if any one of you has the audacity to post something negative, it’s alright to talk about mistakes in the game. If I post, it doesn’t count because you don’t like me.

If what I said is wrong, then do you honestly think he made a smart pitch? Nobody in their right mind did. Scuatro was probably thanking the heavens that Mo came inside in that spot.

Since none of your responses are even related to the content of my post, your personal attacks only detract from your own credibility.

        • ItsATarp says:

I was making a joke. But okay.

        • mbonzo says:

So you know how to pitch better than Mariano? Thats my grievance.

          • Matt says:

This is a ridiculous argument, and a prime example of why little intelligent discussion seems to take place on this blog that isn’t just self aggrandizing.

Rivera hit his spot. He made a perfect pitch, just the WRONG pitch in that spot. Did you honestly think that coming inside in that spot was the right decision? As soon as I saw Martin set up inside, I cringed.

That was a huge mistake in pitch selection, and everyone knows it. Brushing off my argument because I’m not Rivera is just asinine.

            • pat says:

Why is pitching inside to Scutaro a bad decision?

              • Matt says:

Because in that spot, Scuatro was not only likely to try to pull the ball off the Monster, but seemed like he was looking for that pitch all at bat.

First, all of Scuatro’s power is to left field, and especially in Fenway Park. Would you rather give up singles to right field, or risk playing wall ball in a 1 run game?

Second, the way he took the outside pitches in that at bat (he barely even flinched on them) suggests that he wasn’t looking for those pitches. He wasn’t even coming close to offering at any of those pitches, even when Rivera was clearly just laying them in there for strikes out over the plate.

In a one run game, you pitch to the big part of the park, and especially with a guy who has no power to the opposite field.

        • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

When you post, no one takes you seriously because you NEVER POST ANYTHING POSITIVE. All the stuff you say is negative. You were nowhere to be seen during the winning streak. Maybe if you stopped being so fucking critical, people would take you seriously.

          • Matt says:

You people are priceless. So the only way to be respected on this blog is to sit here every night, post about every great hit that a guy had, and to say how great a job they did when they beat up a mediocre pitcher?

The “blog police” are too busy trying to shut down independent thoughts that they don’t realize that the only people they are shaming are themselves.

Boo hoo, I made a critical post. If you don’t like to read a negative post, then don’t read it. What I said is accurate, and you still haven’t denied agreeing with my point. Have you ever considered that the majority of people post on this blog to vent, and to post about things that frustrate them in the game? You treat this place like it’s an academic conference.

            • Mike Axisa says:

Is it lonely on your pedestal, Matt?

            • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I post lots of things that are bad/frustrating. Just scroll up through this thread. Thing is, I also post when GOOD THINGS happen. You never do.

              • Matt says:

                Which is… completely irrelevant.

Not once in this thread have you attacked a single one of my arguments. Rather, you have launched into a crazy personal attack which relates in no way to my post. Sounds quite familiar.

I’m posting my opinion about a play that I disliked, and in the process venting my frustration about a game that they should have won. In fact, I’d venture a guess that your series of personal attacks, which is far more negative in tone than any of my posts, is taking place for the exact same reason that my posts are negative. FRUSTRATION WITH THE GAME.

Don’t act like you are high and mighty, because you have taken a similar tone, except gone completely off topic in the process.

    • mbonzo says:

Hey everyone, some guy on the internet knows how to pitch better than the best bullpen in baseball.

  353. William Wallace says:

Can anyone explain why this team is 2-10 against the Red Sox? Are these twelve games enough of a sample size to find some trends that help figure out what’s wrong? So frustrating.

  354. mbonzo says:

Easily the most annoying game of the season. Between the announcing, men left on base, the umpire, and the stupid defensive moves I was squirming. I’m glad to be out of Boston.

  355. Winston Smith says:

Why are people saying Mo should have been used for a 2nd inning? Situation where the season is on the line? YES. Situation where there’s 50 games to play tied for 1st in the division and all but assured of a playoff spot? NO!

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Because he didn’t throw many pitches, tomorrow is an off day, and the “next best” option is Phil Hughes.

      • Winston Smith says:

He’s not 31 years old anymore. He’s 41. It’s a long season and I’d rather not even risk it in a game that means very little in the grand scheme of things.

  356. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Sucks because that’s a game the Yankees should have won, but whatever. It’s August 8th. Not going to lose any sleep tonight.

  357. #24!!!! says:

This certainly sucks, but it isn’t the end of the world by any means. This wasn’t a must win and the two teams are separated by one game. Disappointing but not the end of the world

  358. JMK says:

Clearly no one is happy about this game and I fail to see much reason to have put Hughes in, but at the end of the day it’s one loss and it would take a Mets-like collapse to not make the playoffs. This is not the end of the world.

    • Ethan says:

The worst part of this loss is hearing all the red sox fanboys at ESPN and Baseball Tonight talk about it. They just love to rub salt in fresh wounds.

  359. Pat D says:

I leave work during the top of the 9th inning feeling good. Then Mo gives up a double to that fucking waste of space Scutaro and I just got filled with black thoughts.

At least I didn’t suffer through this like all of you. Eh, whatever, just show up against the fucking Angels.

  360. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Definitely not the worst loss of 2011, and will definitely not make or break the season, but fuck, Mo needs to nail down that save. If the trolls have a reason to use the word “unacceptable,” tonight’s the night. The off day couldn’t have come at a better time.

  361. Nathan says:

Don’t worry guys…help is on the way. A-Rod will come back, put the team on his shoulders and carry us into October baseball.

Oh…pitching? Umm…CC and rain. Yeah, thats it.

  362. Some Guy says:

    I’m gonna hang myself.

  363. HD says:

It’s not the end of world (or the season for that matter)…but seriously, at some point they have to beat the fucking Sox.

  364. Winston Smith says:

It’s funny how one blown save by Mo changes the whole outlook of the series. If he closes it out we win 2/3 and Freddy is anointed as he matched Beckett. He blows the save and now the season is over, we can’t beat the Sox in October.

  365. YankeesJunkie says:

Lets all meet up at Brooklyn Bridge at 2 am sharp for mass jumping. At least we can win before we go out unlike the choker Yankees!

  366. Karl Krawfid says:

What that hell is Joe G talking about?

Mo didn’t throw 1 pitch over the middle of the plate.

    • ItsATarp says:

The Scutaro pitch was inside and the guy made a good swing on it…Can’t blame mo for making that pitch since he’s done it 100 times before. The result just sucked.

  367. Winston Smith says:

We didn’t have one of our best players. The Sox had two pitching matchups that favored them. The Sox were at home. They won 2/3 in August. It ain’t that big of a deal. A-Rod will be back for October and now we see Freddy can do well against a good offense.

  368. David N says:

Losses don’t get much worse than this one, especially when it’s to the fucking Red Sox. This sucks.

At least we lost it because of Mo blowing a save – most of the time that isn’t going to happen. That’s the only thing that’s giving me solace at the moment.

    • Ethan says:

Seriously? Mo getting the BS is the worst part of this loss IMO

      • Karl Krawfid says:

Thank the idiot behind the plate.

      • wtfh says:

would you rather lose like tonight, or Saturday?

I’d rather lose a close game knowing we were in it till the end, and not getting beat the fuck up 10-4 or w/e the score was.

        • Ethan says:

I would actually lose by a lot. I find this one to be much more painful and now we’ll be listening to all the bullshit the idiots in sports tv have to say about Mo and the yankees

  369. FIPster Doofus says:

Maybe the Yankees should take some lessons from Pedroia. He gets ready between every pitch and he slaps the dugout bench in anger when he doesn’t get a hit. You can’t teach that type of competitiveness.

  370. Kevin says:

Bottom line, Mo have blown the save..but all the runners we left on came back to bite us.

  371. Kevin G. says:

I hate to be the one to say it… but it looks like Mo may be on the decline. :(

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

People say that every year, and he ends up fine.

    • FIPster Doofus says:

You’ve probably been saying the same thing after every blown save for the last decade.

    • Ghost says:

Right, because if he had gotten the save, then he wouldn’t have been on a decline. Its a blown save, every closer in baseball messes up from time to time.

      • Ethan says:

He has had an un-Mo like number this year though. Or at least it seems like it. Mo is still a high quality closers for sure but is he as dominant as he has been in the last few years? I agree with the OP i don’t think he is.

        • ItsATarp says:

he basically just been blowing one run games on the road mostly…nothing to worry too much about…We just need to stop having so many one run games because even the best of best will give up one run once in a while.

          • Ethan says:

My point was only that I don’t remember him blowing so many in previous years. Maybe he’s had more 1 run save situations I don’t know. Though the sample size is probably large enough that I would guess they are fairly similar and the offense is generally pretty similar to that of the last 2 or 3.

            • bonestock94 says:

Right now he has as many blown saves as he did last year, 5. His career high is 6. Hey may or may not exceed that this year, which wouldn’t be a complete shock at his age.

              • Xstar7 says:

Yeah, even at 41 years old, he’s better than most closers that are still in their prime.

              • Ethan says:

Well there’s still 2 months to go so he’s on pace for 7 probably more like 8 with the schedule of these next months. His WHIP is up from the last few years, K/9 is down a lot, FIP is up. Maybe he’s been getting a bit unlucky cause BABIP is at a whopping 0.302,GB/FB is at a low for the past 10 years.

I’d say all of these are fairly strong indicators he is declining. Not to say he isn’t still phenomenal and one of the best in the leage.

      • Matt says:

Wow, just wow. So anyone who has an opinion is just responding to the heat of the moment and is overreacting? Brushing off every argument as hypocrisy just means that you are dodging the real questions.

Actually, if you look at the numbers, Mo has been declining. Pitch FX data shows that Mo’s cutter has lost some horizontal break in the last few seasons, and it’s been pretty apparent that he’s had trouble getting it down in the zone sometimes, as evidenced by his career low ground ball rate.

Also, in the last two seasons, lefties have been hitting him better than righties, and it’s pretty clear that his cutter is not as consistent as it once was.

  372. Dino Velvet says:

    Nunez giveth. Nunez taketh.

  373. Jerome S. says:

Wait… have the Yankees actually won a nationally televised game this year?

  374. Jerome S. says:

I blame… the team. Because that’s who lost.

  375. ItsATarp says:

Look who ranks below Hughes…It’s like you can’t predict baseball..

    • Ethan says:

Gotta love that #1 flop. The best japanese import my ass. Also, why can’t Hughes be more like #11 (Lincecum)

    • Jerome S. says:

      Daisuke was number one?

Let’s not let this loss distract us from that disaster.

    • Mojo says:

HAHAHAHAHA! Holy cock in my face, Batman! That’s fucking embarrassing. It was a nice way to quell the pain of losing this game, however. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Hughes is over-rated and this just proved it, haha.

      • Mojo says:

Wow. I still can’t get over how many Stars are rated below Hughes. It’s laughable. Comedy GENIUS!

      • Ethan says:

Who knows? Hughes had tons of potential. The yankees farm system screwed him up IMO. I really think they need some new system to bring up the pitchers. I realize New York isn’t exactly easy and allow for much growing pains but recently the pitchers from the farm system have completely underperformed.

        • pat says:

Except Dave Robertson and Ivan Nova.

          • Ethan says:

2 out of many. Not exactly a great track record. Anyway, Roberston is having a career year can he maintain it over the next few, who knows. As for Nova he has pitched half a season, hardly a large enough sample size. Just look at Hughes first season last year.

Andy Petitte is the last one I know of that has had long success coming out of the Yankees farm system (although I haven’t been following the Yankees that strongly until 2008ish)

    • Xstar7 says:

“As good as Chien Ming Wang has been, this homegrown ace will be even better.”

      You know, Suzyn….

    • Mattchu12 says:

My favorite part is Brandon Wood, Cameron Maybin, and Delmon Young are all ranked higher than Justin Upton.

  376. Kevin says:

Like I said before, I knew all those RISP FAIL would come back to bite us. And it did.

  377. Girardis Matchup Book says:

Guys, remember what Francessa taught us with the ARod/Jeter debate:

    “It’s not about dah numbahs.”
