Game 120: Revenge

By

(AP Photo/Kathy Willens)

A little more than three months ago, the Royals tattooed Ivan Nova for ten hits and eight runs in just three innings of work, easily the worst start of his young career and one of just eight starts in the majors with that many hits and runs allowed in three or fewer innings this season. Nova’s been pitching very well since coming back up from Triple-A starts ago, so here’s his chance to exact some revenge against the team that embarrassed him back in May. Here’s the lineup…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Andruw Jones, DH
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, 3B
Brett Gardner, LF

Ivan Nova, SP

It’s another 8pm ET start because of the Midwest game, and My9 will have the broadcast. Enjoy.

  1. Jesse says:

Nova iz da numba two starta

    • Brian S. says:

He and Freddy pitch better on the road. If we win the division I would have CC-Colon start off the series at home; if it is on the road I would have Nova or Freddy take the ball in game 2.

      • Jesse says:

I agree. Nova and Garcia have both been MUCH better on the road then at home. Plus I think Nova can handle the pressure pitching on the road. Obviously I think Garcia can too, he has pitched very well in road playoff game, granted he was a different pitcher then.

  2. Brian S. says:

The guy pitching for the Royals sounds like a cartoon character.

  3. Jimmy McNulty says:

They only scored three runs off of AJ, which means Nova should allow -3.

    • David, Jr. says:

AJ’s defenders are sitting, ready to pounce. Watch for them if Nova has a rough outing, pointing out the unfair treatment of poor AJ.

  4. Phife Dawg says:

It’s a My 9 game, which means something bad is going to happen.

  5. Undertakers dong says:

    It’s my yard fella.

  6. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Flaherty’s commentary – particularly regarding catchers – never fails to remind me how he was a no-bat backup catcher for his entire major league career.

  7. Esteban says:

Apropos of nothing, why do I still watch Entourage. What a terrible show. Really always has been.

  8. Mike Myers says:

we probably could have gotten alex gordon over the winter for little…would have been cool

  9. Brad says:

Except for the Yankees, this game looks and sounds like a minor league game.

  10. Dale Mohorcic says:

Is there a cricket in the broadcast booth or am I going crazy?

  11. V says:

Ok, that looked like an easy out at home if Cano doesn’t bobble the transfer.

  12. Mister Delaware says:

Jesus, Burnett fucking suc … oh … credit to the Royals hitters, nothing Nova could have done.

    • Greg says:

      Dont be a hypocrit.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

AJ would’ve given up a homer there.

    • Captain Beatty says:

AJ can give up run after run and people will still make excuses for him because he “has great stuff.” Nova can’t give up any runs at all and can never have a bad start even though he’s outpitched Burnett all year as a rookie.

      • Mike Axisa says:

Half the people here say we don’t get on Nova as much as we do Burnett. The other half say he get on Nova too much and that he should be allowed to have a bad start. Which is it?

        • Greg says:

Get on each starter equally if they have a bad start. Forget money and previous starts.

        • Captain Beatty says:

Nova’s just a rookie. AJ’s been around a while and is still pitching to a 5 ERA the past 2 seasons. Sub 4 ERA in the AL East your rookie year? That’s pretty darn good.

        • Jimmy McNulty says:

I think it matters from fan to fan. I still can’t fathom how Yankee fans can’t loathe AJ Burnett. Yeah he was great in the 2009 post season, but he is what he is and he’s extremely overpaid and may cause Hughes to go back to the bullpen. Nova, on the other hand, Nova’s young and he’s a work in progress. The book’s hardly out on him and he’s allowed a crappy start every now and then, it’s what young pitchers do.

          • Mister Delaware says:

Personally, I find it dumb to “loathe” guys who are giving effort and not acting like dicks. Plus, the xFIP is sub 4.00 for Burnett so I’m still of the opinion his inputs aren’t nearly as bad as the ERA would indicate.

  13. first time lawng time says:

Wow. I had no idea Nova was pitching tonight. What a pleasant surprise.

  14. Xavier says:

    Damn it

  15. Mike Axisa says:

He’s lucky that didn’t go out. Total meatball.

  16. Greg says:

Cashman is sitting back right now.

  17. Esteban says:

    Nova to the bullpen?

  18. Jesse says:

Nova’s slider is inconsistent to say the least.

  19. ItsATarp says:

Goddamit AJ, why are you….oh wait

  20. Captain Beatty says:

Nova’s outpiched AJ all year. Stop making the comparisons based on one start.

  21. Mister Delaware says:

What’s the YES gun have Nova at? Last two have hit 95 on the KC channel.

  22. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

oh look, the Sox got a triple play.

  23. Cy Pettitte says:

when will KC learn? (hopefully not any time soon)

  24. Jimm says:

    Matin’s on fire.

  25. Mike Myers says:

i spent 5 mins looking for a squeak in my apt…..I dont know if I can watch the whole game like this!

  26. wow says:

    settle down now Ivan.

  27. Stratman9652 says:

Lol Frenchy. That worked out so well the first time, why not try it again?

  28. lily says:

oh nova, so much for revenge……………….

  29. Xavier says:

Heard today we could of had Pedro but Cash refused to give up Milton, and the Sox got him for pavano,. We ended up with chuck, but only a year later Alomar was a free agent..

  30. pat says:

Nova has the balls to throw all his pitches. I like that.

  31. jon says:

AJ gave up all singles right?

  32. wow says:

if he could hit as well as he could throw to second…

  33. Chen Meng Wang says:

holy shit that cricket is annoying, btw what happened in the first?

  34. Jerome S. says:

I see what kind of game this is turning in to.

  35. pat says:

    He fuckin smoked that.

  36. wow says:

    unbelievable.

  37. Engelbert says:

Chien-Ming Wang is pitching a helluva game tonight so far

  38. Avi says:

So annoying you can’t watch the My9 games on MLB.com. Why don’t they make them available? Anyone have any idea if they will become available?

  39. Mike Myers says:

    Just hit the mute button….

“Thats all I can stand, and I cant stand no more!”

    What movie?

  40. Jimmy McNulty says:

Hmmm…maybe Ivan Nova isn’t the second coming of CMW.

  41. Monteroisdinero says:

    ARod batting 3rd/Montero 4th tonight.

Give Alex some protection. Me like.

  42. Cy Pettitte says:

Andruw hit by pitch, still smiling.

  43. first time lawng time says:

Why is everyone getting so worked up? There’s no need to send Nova to the bullpen or demote him after ONE inning. And if he has a bad game, so what? You all need to chill. It’s a baseball game! It doesn’t matter!

I’m reading omments above an people are flipping out like, OMG THE YANKEES ARE LoSING AND NOVA AND BURNETT SuCK! Really? Calm down. It’s been one inning and it seems like there is a panic.

    If they lose, big deal.

    Just my outlook.

  44. KRM says:

Were the hard hits off Nova off of change ups? His fastball is around 95, but gamecast has those hits of 88 and 89 mph “fastballs”

  45. Greg says:

    Nice pitching sequence.

  46. ManBearPig says:

Duffy is even worse in the “shut down” innings than AJ is.

  47. Chen Meng Wang says:

Nunie!!!!!! taking a play out of the Gritner’s book.

  48. Esteban says:

    Nunie

  49. Jesse says:

Who else hates it when any Yankee slides head first into first?

  50. pat says:

    No popup Gardy, PLEASE.

  51. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    I blame the cricket

  52. Jerome S. says:

That cricket is bad luck I’ll wager.

  53. lily says:

greattt yankees! good job o offense

  54. wow says:

    not this again please…

  55. Chen Meng Wang says:

Hopefully this score looks different in an hour, I’ve gotta go get some running in, I’ve taken two days off an I’m starting to feel like a lazy blob again.

  56. Jerome S. says:

    Jeremy Kyle Show?

    Oh world…

  57. Jesse says:

Is this gonna be another RISP FAIL game?

  58. Mike Myers says:

hey guys I found the MY 9 contact page….lets overload them with emails…KIll THE CRICKET!

    http://www.my9tv.com/subindex/.....contact_us

  59. wow says:

let CC walk!!! Ivan’s our ace now!!!!11!!1uno!!!!

    /oneinning’d

  60. Will says:

Damn it. Royals are pissing me off with their timely hits and clutch pitching. I’m putting them on my pesky, annoying team list along with the Blue Jays and Rays. It’s sure going to be fun in a few years when there are less doormat teams in the AL.

    • Jerome S. says:

Technically, it’s statistically impossible for there to be less “doormat” teams without there being a reciprocation of less good teams as well. The Royals and Blue Jays may be getting better but we can take comfort in the fact that in a few years the White Sox, Tigers and A’s will suck, perhaps more so.

They might have sent the O’s down to AAA so I didn’t list them.

  61. Jerome S. says:

Is this a cricket or an insecto-monster?

  62. Monteroisdinero says:

Duffy looks like he’s 12. We’ll get him soon.

  63. wow says:

maybe, just maybe, they should consider cashing in on this opportunity.

  64. Jerome S. says:

Wow. Robbie’s really turned his season around, no?

    • Esteban says:

It was just May that killed him. Other than that, he’s been pretty good (give or take some power)

      • Jerome S. says:

20 HR and 30 2B through 8/16? It’s a bit down from last year, but last year was fantastic. Robbie makes his money on average and power. The thing I worry about with him is his on-base skills. It’s his one real weakness at the plate, and in my opinion it’s his deal breaker. If he stays what he is, he has a good career and is probably a “True Yankee”. If, on the other hand, he does what he did in 2010 and starts taking a few walks, he crosses the threshold into serious super-stardom.

        • YankeesJunkie says:

          2010 Cano: 142 wRC+
          2011 Cano: 140 wRC+

          • Mister Delaware says:

Its because the entire league is worse which then makes you go back and determine whether other hitters are worse (at which point you can still complain about Cano relative to 2010) or because pitchers are better (at which point the wRC+ comp is spot on). I have no answer here.

          • Jerome S. says:

            Hooray!

Shows how much league offense has declined, too.

  65. Jesse says:

I’m gonna scream by the 4th inning if this fucking cricket keeps going.

  66. Cy Pettitte says:

that was literally over his head, lmao. Robbie is insane.

  67. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

2nd time through the order ftw

  68. Mike Axisa says:

Haha, how the hell did Cano hit that?

  69. thaaayankeeswin says:

    robbieeeee

  70. CBean says:

best revenge for hitting our batters, scoring runs.

  71. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Andruw slam

  72. lily says:

it would be nice to get some more runs now!! so please jones deliver!!!

  73. Jesse says:

    Here comes bases clearing double

  74. first time lawng time says:

    I have advice for Greg!
    1. Don’t read or watch ESPN. What is the point of following ESPN if it just annoys you? That’s like being, “Oh I hate Lady Gaga and her music but I’m going to watch the videos on YouTube and read the comments that are like ‘oh she’s so innovative!’ while thinking to yourself and getting all pissed and thinking, ‘she is not talented at all! Why can’t these people understand that she has NOTHING on insert the name of some washed up pop star here.’
Seriously, what purpose does that serve?

    2. Don’t get so worked up over the Yankees losing. What’s the big deal if they’re 1.5 games out? IT DOESNT MATTER, GREG.

It is just a game. If they’re playing poorly, just change the channel and watch Teen Mom (haha I’m just joking on that one). But in all seriousness just change the channel.

OOOOOHHH the Yankees are losing so I’m gonna get all pissy about it!*. No Greg. It doesn’t work that way.

    * this part actually applies to most people here. I’ve noticed you all get pissed when the Yankees strand a runner or give up a run. HERE’S AN IDEA! How’s about you let the game play itself out and see what happens before flipping? If they lose get over it. It is just a game. You really shouldn’t let silly things like this bother you.

  75. Jesse says:

    dat wuz strike tree

  76. thaaayankeeswin says:

    keep letting him hang around…

  77. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Coltrane, baby.

  78. CBean says:

    WOOHOO MARTIN!

  79. Cy Pettitte says:

Russell is not fucking around this series.

  80. Jesse says:

Yay we lead. Nova 12-0 career with lead. Game Ova!

  81. Cy Pettitte says:

I guess they’re getting some cricket emails, lol.

  82. Greg says:

    They finally mentioned the crickets.

  83. Jerome S. says:

    “Ambiance”?

    Fuck ambiance.

Gimme mystique and aura any day of the week.

  84. Jesse says:

Thanks for telling us about the cricket’s Bob. IT’S NOT LIKE WE CAN’T HEAR THEM AT HOME!!!!

  85. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

They better put all those mics by the fountains tomorrow.

  86. Avi says:

When did Ellsbury become Griffey Jr?

  87. Cuso says:

Thats how a catcher can help his young pitcher.

    Big knock, Martin, big knock.

  88. Eirias says:

So Drew Pomeranz was finally officially named as the PTBNL in the Jimenez trade. Given that the deal was finalized awhile ago and that recently drafted players cannot be explicitly named in a trade, what would prevent Cleveland from simply not including Pomeranz and giving someone else? Is there protection involved somewhere or is it merely the fact that the Rockies (and the league) would never trade with the Indians again?

  89. Mike Axisa says:

Woo shutdown innings. Giving it right back.

  90. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

That’s an out if Jeter gets the ball

  91. Ivan says:

Wow im surprised Gardner couldnt cut that ball off.

  92. ItsATarp says:

Take AJ out before he implodes…wait i mean Nova

  93. Jorge says:

That was a very curious way to play that, Mr. Gardner.

  94. pat says:

Geez, at least help a brotha out and make a good relay.

  95. Will says:

There’s one run back. Let’s see if Nova pulls an AJ and gives the lead back.

  96. wow says:

only the cool kids can drop the ball on the relay throw.

  97. Mike Axisa says:

    It’s okay, I didn’t like having a lead anyway.

  98. Jerome S. says:

Ah, well. What the hell. If this game turns into a slugfest, put my chips in on the Yankees.

    • Jorge says:

There’s six more innings of baseball to be played. My money’s on the Yankees for sure, even with Melky Ruth hitting that homer.

  99. Greg says:

Well, to be very objective, Nova is not helping matters right now in the AJ situation

  100. Jerome S. says:

Oh fuck. It had to be Melky…

  101. Ivan says:

Well Nova was due for a stinker i guess.

  102. Jetrer says:

    Noesi please

  103. ItsATarp says:

    Goddammit AJ….er Nova

  104. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    AJ could’ve done that too

  105. Mister Delaware says:

(I’m going to be honest, just knowing how this site would be murdering AJ for the exact same results is doubling my annoyance at tonights game.)

    • ItsATarp says:

      Cuz AJ doesn’t have a winner’s mentality..hurr durr

    • Jetrer says:

context … if it happens almost every start(AJ), it is much more aggravating than happening once in a while (Nova)

      • Mister Delaware says:

No it doesn’t. If it happened “every start” with AJ, his ERA wouldn’t only be a half run higher than super-starter Nova.

        • Jetrer says:

AJ does have a blow up inning ALMOST every start (making sure you see the almost this time. Nova has been mostly good over the last couple months. AJ has been mostly bad-mediocre over the last couple months. CONTEXT.
Not saying Nova is great. He’s not. Just saying AJ sucks. He does.

          • Mister Delaware says:

Except even using ERA, which records “blow up innings”, he’s not much different.

            Stats > Your labels

            • Jetrer says:

              STATS:
              AJ last 10 starts = 5.45 ERA
Nova last 10 starts = 3.48 ERA (before today)

Nova has earned more slack by pitching well of late.
AJ gets more grief because he has been bad for a long time.

              • Mister Delaware says:

You already know what I’m going to say so its not worth it.

                • Jetrer says:

                  what, that I’m correct?
                  yeah, I know that

                  • Mister Delaware says:

That people who have to tweak the sample probably don’t have as strong an argument as they think they do.

                    • Jetrer says:

                      tweak what sample???
My argument was that Nova has been pitching much better than AJ LATELY, so he gets some slack when he has a bad start. Because AJ was better early in the season isn’t going to buy him much love now, especially after last year. If it was reversed, and Nova pitched better early but AJ pitched better lately, Nova would be getting slammed instead of AJ.

      • ItsATarp says:

Did you not watch Nova in the first two months? he was basically AJ, with out the strikeouts. He’s improved over the next few months, but he’s had rough stretched as well.

        • Jetrer says:

I’m not saying Nova is much better. I think Nova is just a mediocre 4-5 starter. I’m just saying Nova doesn’t get slammed as much for this start because he generally has been pitching well lately, so people give him some slack. AJ has generally pitched poorly lately, so another mediocre start is just more of the same.

    • thaaayankeeswin says:

      Aj makes 9 mil

    • Jerome S. says:

      It’s ‘cuz he’s white.

  106. Esteban says:

Yikes. Nova doesn’t have it today. And I’m not happy that Melky hit that HR, but it’s good to see him have success.

  107. Jon says:

Nova is way better than AJ

it only took him 3 innings to give up 4 runs

  108. Tex sucks says:

    Yep.

    Nova.

  109. thaaayankeeswin says:

and melky continues to have his best year ever…..woooohoo

  110. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

So with Verlander almost guaranteed to get his 18th win tonight, and subpar outings from both CC and Weaver last week, is Verlander now a lock for Cy Young?

  111. Cuso says:

    the fuck, dude?

  112. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Maybe it’s time to get Noesi up?

  113. Jerome S. says:

    Nova couldn’t buy an out.

  114. CBean says:

    Goddamn ex-Yankees.

  115. Avi says:

    Noesi Please!

  116. YankeesJunkie says:

It would be nice if Nova would keep the ball below waist high.

  117. Jorge says:

This is called a bad outing. All pitchers have them. Breathe and take solace in the fact there’s a seven year-old pitching for the other team.

  118. CP says:

They have the triple, HR, and single this inning. All they need to complete the cycle is a double…

  119. Will says:

Argh. I already can’t wait to get out of Kansas City. This series is just like the series at YS where the Royals kept pounding out hits. Jesus.

  120. thaaayankeeswin says:

bottom line is, the Royals as a team just hit Nova well.

    • Jorge says:

You’ve got Francour and Melky putting up years beyond what anyone would think and a cast of young players. I honestly don’t think they’re that bad a team offensively. Sometimes, they’re going to be put it together. This is why I thought the Yanks would take 2 out of 3, with one headscratching loss.

  121. Tom says:

This doesn’t look like the kind of performance from Nova from which he’ll recover and make a turnaround. I would go for Noesi, sooner rather than later.

  122. wow says:

    let’s see:

Hughes doesn’t have the put away pitch to get strike 3
Nova doesn’t have the sequence to get the 3rd out
AJ doesn’t have the arm to get out of the 3rd inning

… I still don’t like AJ. Nova or Hughes any day.

  123. thaaayankeeswin says:

the yanks will have at least 2 more innings of crooked numbers tonight…

  124. Rockstar4Life says:

He looks like last years version of Nova, wtf dude?

  125. pat says:

He’s been 0-2 on everyone and hung three bad pitches. Jesus Christ.

  126. np says:

    And the Melkman delivers!!!
    /2009

  127. CBean says:

Usually at this point with AJ, I’m asking Martin to punch him in the face to make him better. I don’t know if that works for Nova.

  128. Will says:

Please Frenchy don’t get a hit somehow here.

  129. Greg says:

And you wanted to throw Nova against the Red Sox

  130. Mike Axisa says:

Maybe this will stop the “it’s time to reevaluate Nova’s ceiling” talk.

  131. Ivan says:

SMH, cant be giving hits up to Frenchy.

  132. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Noesi

  133. Avi says:

He’s leaving Nova in WAY too long!

  134. Tex sucks says:

    Nova sucks.

  135. pat says:

OOf. Well there’s no defending that. Can’t keep giving them meatballs.

  136. Jetrer says:

    Dear Girardi,
Nova clearly has nothing today. Please remove him while you still have a chance to win this game.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

  137. BigTimeBartolo says:

Why the fuck does Nova have trouble against the Royals? It’s fucking pathetic.

    Can’t stand this shit

  138. Matt says:

If AJ did what Nova just did, you would be ripping him and saying he should not be in the rotation.

Nova is so overrated around here, it’s unbelievable. If he doesn’t have his great slider, he’s a one pitch pitcher, and his control has always been erratic with all of his pitches. He’s a good back of the rotation guy, but a #2 or #3 in the playoffs? No way.

Do any of you remember how Nova would always be giving up 10 hits and 3-4 or even more runs to mediocre offensive clubs? Don’t let a few good starts fool you, because without that slider, he’s that same exact inconsistent pitcher.

I would take every starter in this rotation over him right now in a playoff series, including AJ Burnett. Nova could implode just as easily as Burnett, except he has consistently worse control.

    • Greg says:

Look at Axisa’s comments. He never overated him.

    • pat says:

Besides his curveball and changeup he’s def a one pitch pitcher.

      • Matt says:

He is inconsistent with both pitches, and hangs a lot of curveballs to lefty hitters.

If he doesn’t have that slider, he doesn’t have a single pitch he can consistently trust other than the fastball. That’s why he was hit or miss before he went down to AAA.

The difference between Nova and the rest of the rotation is that he doesn’t have the ability to consistently generate strikeouts. That’s why I would put him at the bottom of the pecking order for the postseason rotation. Pitchers with high strikeout rates have the potential to shut down opposing lineups in a postseason start, while pitchers who pitch to contact are likely to be average more often.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I have to disagree. AJ is not better than Nova. One bad start and all of a sudden he’s worse than a starter who hasn’t had a quality start since June? Nova is better than AJ.

      • Mister Delaware says:

        Which angle do you want?

        A. Quality starts are a stupid statistic

        B. He’s had three starts “since June”. One missed a QS by a run, one missed by 1/3 of an inning.

      • Matt says:

Don’t let a few good starts from Nova blind your perception of him either. He’s faced some of the worsts offenses in the league his last few starts as well.

In a postseason start, I would take AJ over Nova every time. Pitching to contact with one pitch might work against mediocre lineups like the Angels, but Burnett at least has the potential to outpitch a top starter because of his strikeouts.

In a playoff start, a guy like Nova is likely to give up at least 3 or 4 runs unless he has that slider. Maybe Burnett is a flip of a coin, but one side of the coin is really good (perhaps 6 IP 1 ER) and the other side may be pretty bad (perhaps 5 IP 4-5 ER). However, if you manage it correctly with the bullpen, you can limit the damage from AJ and likely get a better position.

        • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

You make good points, but AJ should NOT get a playoff start. He can look so good and then just lose it like the ALCS last year. With Nova, when he’s off, you can tell from pretty early in the game. At least that’s how I see it.

      • Matt says:

        Burnett in August of 2009:

        0-4 6.03 ERA 1.47 WHIP, .266 BAA

        Burnett in August of 2011:

        1-0 7.88 ERA 1.39 WHIP, .222 BAA

Yet, he was lights out in October for a few games because of his stuff. Of course, he gave you a few horrible starts mixed in as well, but when he was good, he was REALLY good, as in he helped the Yankees win games that they probably don’t win with just a quality start.

    • Jerome S. says:

This AJ/Nova bias is bullshit. Nova has been better than AJ since he was called up. That’s not to say he’s good, just that he’s better.

So basically, we acknowledge that Nova and AJ can suck but that AJ sucks a lot more, and consequently when he does we bag on him because he hasn’t turned in a good start in months.

  139. YankeesJunkie says:

Nova should be pulled in favor of Noesi as Nova can’t hit the backside of a barn.

  140. Jorge says:

Bats are going to have win this one tonight.

  141. wow says:

let’s get back in it. put this game away.

  142. thaaayankeeswin says:

reality check time. This is the ROYALS. Yes they are a young team, but also have some pretty good hitters on their team, including an ex Yank who happens to be having his best year ever. Enter the Yankees, this is the Royals World Series…and they are playing in front of the biggest crowd they will have all year even if half of them are Yankee fans. Bottom line is the bullpen will come in and shut this down while their 8 year old pitcher will give up another 4 runs in the next two innings.

  143. James A says:

    thurman munson and don mattingly

  144. Jesse says:

Watching the Phillies game: It’s 2-1 phils over the D’backs top 9 first two on for AZ……for those who care….

  145. Tyrone Sharpton says:

The yankees will win this game. Curtis Granderson or CC Sabathia will have a hand in this. You watch

  146. Manny says:

OMG these crickets i’m going to have to mute the game.

  147. Cy Pettitte says:

    el Capitan!

  148. Jerome S. says:

Jeter doing it vintage. Me like.

  149. CBean says:

  150. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Jeter!

  151. Tex sucks says:

    Jeter he’s aight.

  152. swishers fauxhawk says:

I like this Jeter kid. He might be worth a look.

  153. Esteban says:

    Yay Jetes

  154. Mike Axisa says:

What do you think, 10-7 tonight? 13-9?

  155. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Why on Earth is Grandy bunting?

  156. mbonzo says:

Bunt… you’re playing to tie this game in the 4th against a rookie pitcher with your rookie pitcher. Just dumb.

  157. Botz says:

    So stupid. Why bunt?

  158. BigTimeBartolo says:

    Loooove post DL Jeets

  159. Cuso says:

Is it safe to say that the Gardner/Jeter combo is ‘approaching’ lethal proportions?

    That combo is becoming filthy.

  160. Pasqua says:

Keep playing for that tie, boys.

  161. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Coney “Duffy about to cough up his 2nd lead of the night” BEFORE IT EVEN HAPPENS!!! Awesome.

  168. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    The Royals are the Royals.

    The Yankees are the Yankees.

    Still.

  169. thaaayankeeswin says:

I love it when a plan comes together

  170. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Duffy got screwed, but he’s a rookie and Mark Teixeira is Mark Teixeira. If he doesn’t get the call, he’s gotta deal with it.

    • The Fallen Phoenix says:

Every strike should be called a strike, and every ball should be called a ball. Sure, it’s on Duffy that he didn’t execute after that pitch. But whether you’re a rookie pitcher or you’ve been in the league 20 years, if you throw a strike, your pitch should be called a strike.

No pitcher should have to pick up the friggin’ umpire.

      • pat says:

You’re %100 right, but that’s just not the case with umpires in this day and age.

        • The Fallen Phoenix says:

That doesn’t mean you can’t (or shouldn’t) bitch about it, though.

          • pat says:

Disagree with you here. We all recognized the situation as soon as it happened from the comfort of our mothers’ basements. Guaranteed if he throws the same pitch he gets the call the second time around. Instead he got flustered and caught too much of the plate on the next one. WOW Cano. That was a HR derby swing.

      • AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I’m not excusing the ump missing the call, but when you’re a rookie in this league you have to expect that borderline calls will go to the veterans.

Jawing at the ump and overthrowing your next pitches will accomplish nothing good.

  171. pat says:

Unfortunately when you have hit multiple batters and thrown at least two pitches eye level in that AB you’re never, ever, going to get that call as a rookie.

  172. 28 this year says:

not able to watch, what was the ejection over?

  173. thaaayankeeswin says:

  174. Esteban says:

  175. pat says:

Robbie is content to just foul off these fastballs and wait for Duffy to bounce a slider. MUAHAHAH

  176. Bobtaco says:

    Legendary AB, Robbie… Regardless…

  177. Dela G says:

This is one hell of an at bat

  178. Dela G says:

    ROBBIE CANO!!

    WOOOOOOOOOO HOLY SHIT!!!

  179. CBean says:

I obviously want the Yankees to murderize Duffy, but man, the poor kid looks like he just wants this to end.

  180. Cy Pettitte says:

that was legendary, jesus christ Robbie!

  181. The Big City of Dreams says:

    The Prince of the City!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  182. Mike Axisa says:

    Holy shit Robinson.

  183. Jerome S. says:

    That was certifiably awesome.

  184. Greg says:

    Robbie Cano! Dontcha Know

  185. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    That’s just not fair.

    Robbie Cano! Don’t ya know!

  186. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Don’t ya know!

  187. swishers fauxhawk says:

That’s what I call an AB.

  188. mbonzo says:

    Wow, that was a bomb.

  189. Esteban says:

Oh what a HR. What an AB. <3 you Robbie.

  190. Ivan says:

Cano is just killing em out there…

  191. thaaayankeeswin says:

well Jimmeny Cricket…the yanks have the lead!

  192. YankeesJunkie says:

    Rally killer!

  193. Erica says:

You know what’s even sweeter than Cano’s home run? HIS SMILE.

  194. Jorge says:

Let me point out that thaaayankeeswin was absolutely correct…..so far. :)

  195. thaaayankeeswin says:

    8 fouled off pitches….and then….THAT!

  196. CBean says:

It’s okay, Duffy. Robinson Cano is just that good at baseball.

  197. Man, I love it when I arrive just at the perfect time.

    Ribbinson, baby.

  198. Esteban says:

Well Robinson’s SLG is higher than where he finished last year.

  199. Cuso says:

    Doncha-fuckin-know!!!

And if ya don’t, your ass betta callllllll somebodayyyy.

      *sheds tear*

oh how I miss the WWF Attitude Era

  200. The Big City of Dreams says:

Robbie getting hot down the stretch…I like

  201. Captain Beatty says:

Say what you want about Nova, if he can gut out a couple more innings and keep them at 5 he will have earned his 12th victory. This guy could rack up 16-17 wins before the season is out. Very impressive for a rookie.

    • Esteban says:

LOL. That would be an example of why wins are stupid.

    • Matt says:

They keep saying how he has never lost a game in which he has been given a lead. Well… look at tonight. Any stat related to wins is always a bit misleading, because it depends on both run support and pitching performance.

  202. nsalem says:

    6-2 Rays!!!!

  203. BigTimeBartolo says:

    I <3 Robbie

  204. CBean says:

    Halladay complete game loss

  205. Matt says:

What an at bat from Robinson Cano! When A-Rod went down last season, they survived because of how hot Teixeira and Cano got during that stretch, and this year it seems to be Granderson and Cano that have carried the team.

If A-Rod is truly healthy now after the knee surgery, I don’t see how Boston has a better lineup than the Yankees, especially since Adrian Gonzalez has stopped hitting for power in the last two months.

  206. Stratman9652 says:

    Adcock?

    /immature giggling

  207. Melky says:

I wish Melky Cabrera was on our team.

  208. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Anyone watching the Sox game? Gamecast says Zobrist stole home. What happened?

    • flamingo says:

      From a LoHud comment:

The Red Sox pulled off a triple play in this game, but for the second time tonight, the Lowrie-Varitek duo coughs up a run.

They appear to have Jennings in a rundown between 1st & 2nd, but Zobrist is at 3rd, by the time they check the runner, he’s already coming. They throw the ball to Lowrie, who relays to Varitek as Zobrist slides in safely, as the ball bounces away.

  209. Esteban says:

I really had a feeling Ribbinson would HR there. He was just waiting for the right pitch.

  210. CBean says:

“Yankees are good.” Oh Coney, I love you.

  211. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Q: What’s the biggest lesson for Duffy tonight?

    A: The Yankees are good.

    David Cone is my hero

  212. Greg says:

Now we need to just coax Nova through 5

  213. Bobtaco says:

Wow, Duffy withe vintage WWI 1,000 yard stare…

  214. MikeW says:

The Yankees need Nva to throw three scoreless innings now. Rays 6 – 2 over the RS, top of the 7th.

  215. Bobtaco says:

Wow, Duffy with the vintage WWI 1,000 yard stare…

  216. Jerome S. says:

This is painful. I have to take a shit but the Yankees aren’t letting me.

  217. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

We might be looking at a 4 hour game here…

  218. pat says:

Lol, Nunez pretty much hits like I do when playing video games. Swing at the first three pitches and hope something good happens.

  219. Dela G says:

this is a fun game to watch so far

  220. Greg says:

So what do we know about Raul Valdes?

  221. Melky says:

How I wish Melky took the place of our slap hitting left fielder.

  222. teddy says:

anyone know how far cano hit that ball

  223. pat says:

Just throw your fastball. Don’t try and get too cute.

  224. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nova haz teh winz!

  225. Greg says:

    Well done Nova.

  226. Captain Beatty says:

In this, a shutdown inning, Nova came in and got the job done 1-2-3. AJ Burnett would have given the lead back on 5 pitches.

  227. YankeesJunkie says:

    Teh $2 starter.

  228. Kevin G. says:

I know I’m late but that Cano at-bat was Pedroian. It shows you what can happen when Cano takes pitches and has good at-bats.

  229. Avi says:

Ubaldo out of the game against the White Sox after 4.2 innings.
    5 runs (4 Earned), 9 hits, 1 BB 5 k’s.

  230. Tex sucks says:

    Grandy will hit a bomb

  231. I can’t believe Paul Rodriguez and Flex Alexander (in a non-speaking role!) are making commercials for Verizon. I feel so bad for them.

  232. Jerome S. says:

    I love Robinson Cano.

I wouldn’t have any other second baseman.

  233. Esteban says:

    So silky smooth.

  234. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Nova in line for a win = ACE!!!

  235. CBean says:

    Ane Niemann complete game win.

  236. Avi says:

Arodys with his first MLB win.

    • Jerome S. says:

      Worst. Trade. Ever.

      • MikeD says:

        Not.Even.Close.

        • JobaWockeeZ says:

That’s great it still sucks. I hope someone doesn’t argue that it doesn’t suck but I’m expecting it.

          • MikeD says:

I agree it sucks. I was fine with the deal at the time. Bottom line is Javy was one of the top three pitchers in the NL the prior year and to get someone of that level requires giving up quality. Unfortunately Javy’s career innings finally caught up with him and he lost three mph off his fastball and hasn’t been the same.

I didn’t expect Vazquez to pitch anywhere near as well as he did in Atlanta, but there was no predicting how bad he became.

The deal made sense. It would make sense to do it again with similar types of talents. It’s done.

      • Mike Axisa says:

Really? I hadn’t heard. It’s only 20 months of non-stop talking about it.

      • Matt says:

Definitely not. Dunn and Logan are a wash, Melky was a spare part who put up an even worse WAR than Vazquez last season and was going to see an increase in salary. Vizcaino is the only player in that deal who could be any bit valuable, but he has only thrown a few innings in the big leagues! Jeez.

  237. Tex sucks says:

We can be in first place after this game.

    Crazy maine.

  238. MikeD says:

I arrive home expecting to see the game heading toward the 8th, not the 6th, with Nova giving up maybe only a couple or runs. Well, as long as the Yankees are ahead…!

  239. Mister Delaware says:

Rarely do you see 5 callable strikes in one PA.

  240. Jerome S. says:

    Eh, I’d pull him.

    • tom says:

I’d have only given him one base runner. Two at the outside. It’s not as if the first three innings didn’t happen; he obviously wasn’t tip-top tonight, and it’s reckless to have tried to extend him this far.

  241. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    AJ’d

  242. Avi says:

    FUCK GIRARDI!

  243. Captain Beatty says:

Where are our middle relievers, Joe? Have a tighter leash on these guys. You took out AJ last night.

  244. Esteban says:

Girardi probably should have taken Nova out sooner. Probably. But he can still get the win, so it’s all good RIGHT?

  245. BigTimeBartolo says:

Ivan Nova, trying his hardest to lose the game. Time to pull this sack of shit out

  246. Stratman9652 says:

Wow the Royals are running out a bunch of high-schoolers tonight. Are any of them old enough to buy a pack of smokes?

  247. MikeD says:

Gotta be Nova’s worst start in the majors. Who would think the Royals would be the team to give him the most trouble, at least over the last couple of starts.

  248. pat says:

I knew this scrub hittin .200 with no HR and 1 RBi would get a hit. Of effing course.

  249. Cuso says:

Too long a leash with the kid and he knows it.

After the walk, you go to the pen. No question.

  250. Captain Beatty says:

Best bullpen in baseball and Joe just sits there game after game and doesn’t use them until the 7th. You can you these guys before the 7th. Wade is rested.

  251. teddy says:

what an awful pitch by nova

  252. Will says:

Wow Nova. Wow. Stupid choice of pitches this whole game.

    • Rockstar4Life says:

You know sometimes it’s actually the team you are facing that beats you. Give the Royals some credit.

      • Jerome S. says:

It’s one thing when an offense scratches out three runs in six innings off a pitcher with all of guns a blazin’. But what a good offense does is feast on bad pitches, and that’s what the Royals did tonight.

I like Nova, at least a lot more than I once did. He had a shitty start, so? Why are we all so afraid of admitting that? He obviously threw some terrible pitches tonight.

    • Jetrer says:

yeah, fastballs down the middle and hanging sliders usually don’t get good results

  253. Greg says:

Everybody stop getting on Girardi. Jesus. YOu’ve got to give the kid a chance to get out of it. Especially when facing a .238 catcher.

  254. teddy says:

walk him to get to gordon

  255. Avi says:

Girardi left Nova in at least 2 innings too long. It was so clear that it just wasn’t his night. He gave the Royals at least 3 runs for free.
    Thank you Joe.

  256. Guns of the Navarone says:

Well the strikezone is completely atrocious. I don’t know how an umpire can get away with calling a game like this. But this should also serve as a reminder: Ivan Nova is not that good.

  257. jon says:

    holy fucking teix

  258. Cy Pettitte says:

Teix is insane. are you serious with that?

  259. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Tex >>>>>> Everyone Else

  260. Esteban says:

Thank god Teixeira kept Nova’s win intact!

  261. Ivan says:

Tex is not a player, he just crushes alot.

  262. teddy says:

sick ply be teix thats a rbi triple right there

  263. Greg says:

YOu want to say that Girardi left him in a batter too late. Perhaps. If the next guy up was Albert Pujols. Instead it was a rookie catcher hitting .238. If Joe pulls him there, it does not show alot of confidence which might affect Nova

    • Jetrer says:

yeah, but 7 runs in 5.1 innings does wonders for his confidence, right?? Taking a pitcher out of a game that he pitched horribly in isn’t going to hurt his confidence any more than his performance already did.

    • Captain Beatty says:

Not really. He didn’t have much all game and he got himself into trouble again. Joe pulled AJ just last night in the 6th with a weak hitter coming to the plate. Joe has to be quicker to go to his elite pen. That’s what they’re down there for.

    • Jerome S. says:

Joe showed confidence in him when he let go into the fourth.

    • Will says:

It shouldn’t matter how Nova feels. As a manager your job is to win ball games regardless of players’ “confidence”. Girardi shouldn’t have gambled and should have gotten Logan/Wade out there after the first baserunner put on by Nova. Could have saved some runs.

  264. Stratman9652 says:

Can’t say enough about Tex. Of the big three free agent signings in CC, AJ, and Tex, I can live with 2 of 3 being worth every penny and more.

  265. Cy Pettitte says:

Nunie’s helmet came off, he was obviously safe.

  266. Mister Delaware says:

    GO!

  267. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Grit. Gritner.

  268. teddy says:

damm nice play, cost the yanks a run. sweet gardner

  269. Mike Axisa says:

There goes that slap hitting left fielder again.

  270. Brandon says:

For about the thousandth time this year…

    Brett Gardner. Good at baseball.

  271. MikeD says:

Brett’s got to be one of the few players in the game when he hits it down the line into the rightfield corner it’s an automatic triple.

Gardner is an excellent baserunner, despite what people think.

  272. Ivan says:

Bret is one of those players where everytime the ball is deep within the outfield, you know its an automatic triple.

  273. Cy Pettitte says:

    Jeter is on fire

    • tom says:

There’s certainly time for him to cool off, as some here expect. But right now it’s like he can smell that .290-.300 range, and he’s hell-bent on getting there.

  274. teddy says:

    damm jeter

  275. 1stbase says:

    That was just beautiful

  276. MikeD says:

I’m digging retro Jeter. Hoping it lasts.

  277. Esteban says:

    The Captain Lives!

  278. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Jeetah!

  279. Brandon says:

Why is it that every time Brett is on 3rd, I wanna see him try to steal home? Next time a lefty is on the mound that is slow to the plate, I want to see Gardy attempt to steal home.

  280. MikeD says:

John Gibbons looks exactly like the guy from Men In Black who goes out to find the crashed space ship and then the bug alien uses his skin as his suit.

  281. Cuso says:

Remember what I said about an hour ago about Gardner/Jeter becoming lethal?

And last night what I said last night about Gardner having taken that next step to become a complete hitter?

    …yeah. All of that.

  282. Monteroisdinero says:

    Dembo-you done Jeets good.

  283. Esteban says:

When ARod comes back, Jeter will be probably be leadoff full time and Gardner will go back to the 9 hole and I’m ok with that. The lineup is gonna be so nasty. Really only one hole (Catcher)

Instead of inflating his height, he should go the other direction. Claim he’s only 5’2″ and, yeah, “I’m only 5’2″ and I just struck out your 6’5″, 250lb. MLB ass!” Ron Guidry is Randy Johnson next to Collins.

  296. Greg says:

    94 from Mo tonight

  297. Chen Meng Wang says:

One out away from first place again.

  298. Dela G says:

  303. MikeD says:

Back in first. If the Yankees ever figure out how to beat Boston this year…

  304. Chen Meng Wang says:

Woot, the Yankees win, now to watch the encore to find out what the fuck went down in the middle innings.

  305. CBean says:

    Yay, Yankees win!

  306. Ivan says:

  307. Esteban says:

  308. pat says:

And that’s why Girardi can afford to let Nova try and grind it out. Once the bullpen doors open it’s game over.

  309. Bartolo's Colon says:

  310. flamingo says:

  311. Jorge says:

I love it when the team does the job and carries a pitcher who didn’t have his best stuff to victory. Happy 12th victory, Ivan. Pick up the team next time.

  312. Ethan says:

Lol the sports anchor up here in maine said that if the Yankees won the Red sox would only be a half game up. Propaganda BS! Yankees are on top fool! :)

  313. Stratman9652 says:

Save 600 is starting to look possible this year, no?

    • Stratman9652 says:

Shit more than possible actually. Like, get the countdown going possible.

    • MikeD says:

Nine more to 600, so it is certainly possible. Ten to tie Hoffman and eleven to pass.

All are possible, but save chances are unpredictable over the course of a few weeks. If the Yankees blow other teams out or the Yankees hit a losing streak, then his chances are reduced. It’s also quite possible the Yankees will begin to slow down his innings once they lock up a playoff spot (hopefully) and they want to get him prepared for the postseason.

But, yeah, all are possible this season.

  314. pat says:

I fuckin love Cone. His rundown of the bullpen shutting shit down was hilarious.
