Game 120: Revenge

By

(AP Photo/Kathy Willens)

A little more than three months ago, the Royals tattooed Ivan Nova for ten hits and eight runs in just three innings of work, easily the worst start of his young career and one of just eight starts in the majors with that many hits and runs allowed in three or fewer innings this season. Nova’s been pitching very well since coming back up from Triple-A starts ago, so here’s his chance to exact some revenge against the team that embarrassed him back in May. Here’s the lineup…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Andruw Jones, DH
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, 3B
Brett Gardner, LF

Ivan Nova, SP

It’s another 8pm ET start because of the Midwest game, and My9 will have the broadcast. Enjoy.

Nova iz da numba two starta

    • Brian S.

He and Freddy pitch better on the road. If we win the division I would have CC-Colon start off the series at home; if it is on the road I would have Nova or Freddy take the ball in game 2.

      • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

I agree. Nova and Garcia have both been MUCH better on the road then at home. Plus I think Nova can handle the pressure pitching on the road. Obviously I think Garcia can too, he has pitched very well in road playoff game, granted he was a different pitcher then.

        • Adam B.

It’s probably easier to pitch on the road considering how small our ballpark is

  • Brian S.

The guy pitching for the Royals sounds like a cartoon character.

  • Jimmy McNulty

They only scored three runs off of AJ, which means Nova should allow -3.

    • David, Jr.

AJ’s defenders are sitting, ready to pounce. Watch for them if Nova has a rough outing, pointing out the unfair treatment of poor AJ.

  • Phife Dawg

It’s a My 9 game, which means something bad is going to happen.

  • Undertakers dong

    It’s my yard fella.

  • The Fallen Phoenix

Flaherty’s commentary – particularly regarding catchers – never fails to remind me how he was a no-bat backup catcher for his entire major league career.

  • Esteban

Apropos of nothing, why do I still watch Entourage. What a terrible show. Really always has been.

    • V

I like it  An easy watch, given it’s not an hour long.

      • Esteban

It has enjoyable moments, and it’s lighthearted, but 8 seasons or whatever?

        • V

I watched all 7 seasons in like 4 weeks, lol.

  • Mike Myers

we probably could have gotten alex gordon over the winter for little…would have been cool

    • V

Define ‘little’. No, the Royals weren’t giving him away for Adam Warren types.

  • Brad

Except for the Yankees, this game looks and sounds like a minor league game.

    • Monteroisdinero

And Arod is playing at Scranton-may be noisier.

  • Dale Mohorcic

Is there a cricket in the broadcast booth or am I going crazy?

    • Brad

I hear it, too. And the crowd sounds louder than a typical My9 broadcast.

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

John Flaharty and Bob Lorenz bring weird things.

    • ManBearPig

      I hear it too

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yeah, and it’s driving me insane.

    • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

i thought that was outside my house.

      • Mister Delaware

        Do you live in KC?

        • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

no. but there’s usually cricket’s outside my house though. I hear them a lot.

  • V

Ok, that looked like an easy out at home if Cano doesn’t bobble the transfer.

  • Mister Delaware

Jesus, Burnett fucking suc … oh … credit to the Royals hitters, nothing Nova could have done.

    • Greg

      Dont be a hypocrit.

      • V

        e

      • Mister Delaware

You’re not spelling or using that term properly.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

AJ would’ve given up a homer there.

    • Captain Beatty

AJ can give up run after run and people will still make excuses for him because he “has great stuff.” Nova can’t give up any runs at all and can never have a bad start even though he’s outpitched Burnett all year as a rookie.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Half the people here say we don’t get on Nova as much as we do Burnett. The other half say he get on Nova too much and that he should be allowed to have a bad start. Which is it?

        • Greg

Get on each starter equally if they have a bad start. Forget money and previous starts.

        • Captain Beatty

Nova’s just a rookie. AJ’s been around a while and is still pitching to a 5 ERA the past 2 seasons. Sub 4 ERA in the AL East your rookie year? That’s pretty darn good.

        • Jimmy McNulty

I think it matters from fan to fan. I still can’t fathom how Yankee fans can’t loathe AJ Burnett. Yeah he was great in the 2009 post season, but he is what he is and he’s extremely overpaid and may cause Hughes to go back to the bullpen. Nova, on the other hand, Nova’s young and he’s a work in progress. The book’s hardly out on him and he’s allowed a crappy start every now and then, it’s what young pitchers do.

          • Mister Delaware

Personally, I find it dumb to “loathe” guys who are giving effort and not acting like dicks. Plus, the xFIP is sub 4.00 for Burnett so I’m still of the opinion his inputs aren’t nearly as bad as the ERA would indicate.

  • first time lawng time

Wow. I had no idea Nova was pitching tonight. What a pleasant surprise.

  • Xavier

    Damn it

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He’s lucky that didn’t go out. Total meatball.

  • Greg

Cashman is sitting back right now.

  • Esteban

    Nova to the bullpen?

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      AAA.

      • Esteban

        DSL.

        • Mister Delaware

          Never noticed.

  • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

Nova’s slider is inconsistent to say the least.

    • Jim S

It’s almost as if he learned it this year.

  • ItsATarp

Goddamit AJ, why are you….oh wait

  • Captain Beatty

Nova’s outpiched AJ all year. Stop making the comparisons based on one start.

  • Mister Delaware

What’s the YES gun have Nova at? Last two have hit 95 on the KC channel.

    • ItsATarp

yea he’s in the upper 90’s.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

oh look, the Sox got a triple play.

    • Greg

So in one day we may lose 1.5 games. Not good if you want to stick it to the media. Or fuck the media as TJSC would say.

      • first time lawng time

It’s just a baseball game, Greg. And if you don’t read or watch ESPN, then you won’t get aggravated.

        • Greg

Do you know any other national sports outlets? If I cant trust “the worldwide leader” who can you trust?

          • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

            Is this a serious question?

          • first time lawng time

Don’t read or follow national sports outlets.

Get a hobby to do during the day and watch baseball at night and just read RaB. Simple.

If you don’t like something, ignore it.

      • ItsATarp

        Sox are still losing bro

      • Sweet Dick Willie

So in one day we may lose 1.5 games.

Or, the Yanks could gain a half game. Why must you always thinks worst case?

    • Owen Two

Yeah, there’s an entry you don’t on Gameday very often: GITP.

  • Cy Pettitte

when will KC learn? (hopefully not any time soon)

  • Jimm

    Matin’s on fire.

  • Mike Myers

i spent 5 mins looking for a squeak in my apt…..I dont know if I can watch the whole game like this!

  • wow

    settle down now Ivan.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Lol Frenchy. That worked out so well the first time, why not try it again?

  • lily

oh nova, so much for revenge……………….

  • Xavier

Heard today we could of had Pedro but Cash refused to give up Milton, and the Sox got him for pavano,. We ended up with chuck, but only a year later Alomar was a free agent..

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Eh, Pedro sucked at that point anyway.

      • Greg

        In 98?

        • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

          Oh, it was back then?
Excuse me, I misinterpreted it. Heheh.

        • CP

Check your sarcasm meter. It may need adjustment.

  • pat

Nova has the balls to throw all his pitches. I like that.

    • jon

      worked well so far

      • pat

It serves him well in the long run. Unlike say, Phil Hughes who will give up on his changeup for weeks at a time.

  • jon

AJ gave up all singles right?

  • wow

if he could hit as well as he could throw to second…

  • Chen Meng Wang

holy shit that cricket is annoying, btw what happened in the first?

  • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

I see what kind of game this is turning in to.

  • pat

    He fuckin smoked that.

  • wow

    unbelievable.

  • Engelbert

Chien-Ming Wang is pitching a helluva game tonight so far

  • Avi

So annoying you can’t watch the My9 games on MLB.com. Why don’t they make them available? Anyone have any idea if they will become available?

  • Mike Myers

    Just hit the mute button….

“Thats all I can stand, and I cant stand no more!”

    What movie?

  • Jimmy McNulty

Hmmm…maybe Ivan Nova isn’t the second coming of CMW.

    • Mike Myers

      hopefully the good years….

  • Monteroisdinero

    ARod batting 3rd/Montero 4th tonight.

Give Alex some protection. Me like.

Why is everyone getting so worked up? There’s no need to send Nova to the bullpen or demote him after ONE inning. And if he has a bad game, so what? You all need to chill. It’s a baseball game! It doesn’t matter!

I’m reading omments above an people are flipping out like, OMG THE YANKEES ARE LoSING AND NOVA AND BURNETT SuCK! Really? Calm down. It’s been one inning and it seems like there is a panic.

    If they lose, big deal.

    Just my outlook.

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

The cricket has everyone on edge.

  • KRM

Were the hard hits off Nova off of change ups? His fastball is around 95, but gamecast has those hits of 88 and 89 mph “fastballs”

    • pat

      Two hanging sliders.

Who else hates it when any Yankee slides head first into first?

    • CMP

I bet Ravel Santana wishes he slid head first the other day.

    • Chen Meng Wang

I hate when any player does it, it’s almost like they’re asking to jam a wrist or break some fingers.

    • Mister Delaware

Depends on the timing. I wish more guys dove when the 1B is pulled off towards home by the throw and wish less guys dove to beat throws.

I don’t see how you can complain about that. The Yankees are second in the league in runs scored and among the best with RISP. They missed one opportunity, basically.

    • YankeesJunkie

Nah, it is not like the bases were loaded with no outs and the Yankees got zero runs.

Damn it. Royals are pissing me off with their timely hits and clutch pitching. I’m putting them on my pesky, annoying team list along with the Blue Jays and Rays. It’s sure going to be fun in a few years when there are less doormat teams in the AL.

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Technically, it’s statistically impossible for there to be less “doormat” teams without there being a reciprocation of less good teams as well. The Royals and Blue Jays may be getting better but we can take comfort in the fact that in a few years the White Sox, Tigers and A’s will suck, perhaps more so.

They might have sent the O’s down to AAA so I didn’t list them.

        Wow

  • wow

maybe, just maybe, they should consider cashing in on this opportunity.

    • Greg

It’s not an opportunity unless we get into scoring position.

  • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Wow. Robbie’s really turned his season around, no?

    • Esteban

It was just May that killed him. Other than that, he’s been pretty good (give or take some power)

      • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

20 HR and 30 2B through 8/16? It’s a bit down from last year, but last year was fantastic. Robbie makes his money on average and power. The thing I worry about with him is his on-base skills. It’s his one real weakness at the plate, and in my opinion it’s his deal breaker. If he stays what he is, he has a good career and is probably a “True Yankee”. If, on the other hand, he does what he did in 2010 and starts taking a few walks, he crosses the threshold into serious super-stardom.

        • YankeesJunkie

          2010 Cano: 142 wRC+
          2011 Cano: 140 wRC+

          • Mister Delaware

Its because the entire league is worse which then makes you go back and determine whether other hitters are worse (at which point you can still complain about Cano relative to 2010) or because pitchers are better (at which point the wRC+ comp is spot on). I have no answer here.

          • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

            Hooray!

by Martin hopefully. take a strike Russell! or don’t

  • first time lawng time

    I have advice for Greg!
    1. Don’t read or watch ESPN. What is the point of following ESPN if it just annoys you? That’s like being, “Oh I hate Lady Gaga and her music but I’m going to watch the videos on YouTube and read the comments that are like ‘oh she’s so innovative!’ while thinking to yourself and getting all pissed and thinking, ‘she is not talented at all! Why can’t these people understand that she has NOTHING on insert the name of some washed up pop star here.’
Seriously, what purpose does that serve?

    2. Don’t get so worked up over the Yankees losing. What’s the big deal if they’re 1.5 games out? IT DOESNT MATTER, GREG.

It is just a game. If they’re playing poorly, just change the channel and watch Teen Mom (haha I’m just joking on that one). But in all seriousness just change the channel.

OOOOOHHH the Yankees are losing so I’m gonna get all pissy about it!*. No Greg. It doesn’t work that way.

    * this part actually applies to most people here. I’ve noticed you all get pissed when the Yankees strand a runner or give up a run. HERE’S AN IDEA! How’s about you let the game play itself out and see what happens before flipping? If they lose get over it. It is just a game. You really shouldn’t let silly things like this bother you.

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Some days FTLT is so sane it’s crazy.

    • Esteban

Honestly you act the same way sometimes, getting worked up and pessimistic over a stretch of poor play.

      • first time lawng time

I used to. But I don’t anymore. I’ve just been like “whatever” this entire month.

    • Greg

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

They better put all those mics by the fountains tomorrow.

    • Greg

That will screw the beer drinkers. Just hearing water flow the whole game.

When did Ellsbury become Griffey Jr?

  • Cuso

Thats how a catcher can help his young pitcher.

    Big knock, Martin, big knock.

  • Eirias

So Drew Pomeranz was finally officially named as the PTBNL in the Jimenez trade. Given that the deal was finalized awhile ago and that recently drafted players cannot be explicitly named in a trade, what would prevent Cleveland from simply not including Pomeranz and giving someone else? Is there protection involved somewhere or is it merely the fact that the Rockies (and the league) would never trade with the Indians again?

    • Mister Delaware

I imagine the list the acquiring team is picking from is in some way binding.

    • pat

No relay is gonna help that one.

  • Will

There’s one run back. Let’s see if Nova pulls an AJ and gives the lead back.

  • Cuso

    ugh

only the cool kids can drop the ball on the relay throw.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    It’s okay, I didn’t like having a lead anyway.

  • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Ah, well. What the hell. If this game turns into a slugfest, put my chips in on the Yankees.

    • Jorge

There’s six more innings of baseball to be played. My money’s on the Yankees for sure, even with Melky Ruth hitting that homer.

  • Greg

Well, to be very objective, Nova is not helping matters right now in the AJ situation

  • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Oh fuck. It had to be Melky…

  • Ivan

Well Nova was due for a stinker i guess.

    Goddammit AJ….er Nova

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    AJ could’ve done that too

  • Mister Delaware

(I’m going to be honest, just knowing how this site would be murdering AJ for the exact same results is doubling my annoyance at tonights game.)

    • ItsATarp

      Cuz AJ doesn’t have a winner’s mentality..hurr durr

    • Jetrer

context … if it happens almost every start(AJ), it is much more aggravating than happening once in a while (Nova)

      • Mister Delaware

No it doesn’t. If it happened “every start” with AJ, his ERA wouldn’t only be a half run higher than super-starter Nova.

        • Jetrer

AJ does have a blow up inning ALMOST every start (making sure you see the almost this time. Nova has been mostly good over the last couple months. AJ has been mostly bad-mediocre over the last couple months. CONTEXT.
Not saying Nova is great. He’s not. Just saying AJ sucks. He does.

              AJ last 10 starts = 5.45 ERA
Nova last 10 starts = 3.48 ERA (before today)

Nova has earned more slack by pitching well of late.
AJ gets more grief because he has been bad for a long time.

              • Mister Delaware

You already know what I’m going to say so its not worth it.

                • Jetrer

                  what, that I’m correct?
                  yeah, I know that

                  • Mister Delaware

That people who have to tweak the sample probably don’t have as strong an argument as they think they do.

                    • Jetrer

                      tweak what sample???
My argument was that Nova has been pitching much better than AJ LATELY, so he gets some slack when he has a bad start. Because AJ was better early in the season isn’t going to buy him much love now, especially after last year. If it was reversed, and Nova pitched better early but AJ pitched better lately, Nova would be getting slammed instead of AJ.

      • ItsATarp

Did you not watch Nova in the first two months? he was basically AJ, with out the strikeouts. He’s improved over the next few months, but he’s had rough stretched as well.

        • Jetrer

I’m not saying Nova is much better. I think Nova is just a mediocre 4-5 starter. I’m just saying Nova doesn’t get slammed as much for this start because he generally has been pitching well lately, so people give him some slack. AJ has generally pitched poorly lately, so another mediocre start is just more of the same.

    • thaaayankeeswin

      Aj makes 9 mil

        No he doesn’t.

Yikes. Nova doesn’t have it today. And I’m not happy that Melky hit that HR, but it’s good to see him have success.

  • wow

    c’mon.

  • Jon

Nova is way better than AJ

it only took him 3 innings to give up 4 runs

    Yep.

    Nova.

and melky continues to have his best year ever…..woooohoo

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

So with Verlander almost guaranteed to get his 18th win tonight, and subpar outings from both CC and Weaver last week, is Verlander now a lock for Cy Young?

    • CP

It’s August 16th. No one is a lock for anything yet.

Yes, wins are the only thing that matter.

    Noesi Please!

    • YankeesJunkie

NO! Noesi already pitched for this month.

  • YankeesJunkie

It would be nice if Nova would keep the ball below waist high.

  • Jorge

This is called a bad outing. All pitchers have them. Breathe and take solace in the fact there’s a seven year-old pitching for the other team.

  • CP

They have the triple, HR, and single this inning. All they need to complete the cycle is a double…

  • Will

Argh. I already can’t wait to get out of Kansas City. This series is just like the series at YS where the Royals kept pounding out hits. Jesus.

  • thaaayankeeswin

bottom line is, the Royals as a team just hit Nova well.

    • Jorge

You’ve got Francour and Melky putting up years beyond what anyone would think and a cast of young players. I honestly don’t think they’re that bad a team offensively. Sometimes, they’re going to be put it together. This is why I thought the Yanks would take 2 out of 3, with one headscratching loss.

  • Tom

This doesn’t look like the kind of performance from Nova from which he’ll recover and make a turnaround. I would go for Noesi, sooner rather than later.

  • wow

    let’s see:

Hughes doesn’t have the put away pitch to get strike 3
Nova doesn’t have the sequence to get the 3rd out
AJ doesn’t have the arm to get out of the 3rd inning

… I still don’t like AJ. Nova or Hughes any day.

    • Jorge

      …..aaaaaaand the boo-birds have arrived.

      • wow

dude, chill. it’s not a knock on Nova.

        • Jorge

“I still don’t like AJ, Nova, or Hughes any day” = not a knock on Nova.

          Totally get it. Wait, what?

          • wow

i guess it’s confusing. i said i still dont like AJ.

but i will take Hughes and Nova any day.

        • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Sure, if you ignore April and May.

He’ll be fine, this is no big deal. But Nova was getting way, waaay overrated based on three good starts back from AAA, one of which he didn’t even strike anyone out.

    • mbonzo

That slider still looks great when its not hanging. But yea, he just learned this pitch and people think its gonna immediately be his plus put away pitch.

    Noesi

      • Tex sucks

I mean CC has won a Cy Young. Carried a team to a world series, and put a team on his back to get them into the postseason.

Nova just sucks. He’s like Kennedy. A NL pitcher.

        • pat

          Lolz.

  • pat

OOf. Well there’s no defending that. Can’t keep giving them meatballs.

  • Jetrer

    Dear Girardi,
Nova clearly has nothing today. Please remove him while you still have a chance to win this game.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

    • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

he needs to go through this.

  • BigTimeBartolo

Why the fuck does Nova have trouble against the Royals? It’s fucking pathetic.

    Can’t stand this shit

    • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

rather have him suck against the royals then the playoff teams.

  • Matt

If AJ did what Nova just did, you would be ripping him and saying he should not be in the rotation.

Nova is so overrated around here, it’s unbelievable. If he doesn’t have his great slider, he’s a one pitch pitcher, and his control has always been erratic with all of his pitches. He’s a good back of the rotation guy, but a #2 or #3 in the playoffs? No way.

Do any of you remember how Nova would always be giving up 10 hits and 3-4 or even more runs to mediocre offensive clubs? Don’t let a few good starts fool you, because without that slider, he’s that same exact inconsistent pitcher.

I would take every starter in this rotation over him right now in a playoff series, including AJ Burnett. Nova could implode just as easily as Burnett, except he has consistently worse control.

    • Greg

Look at Axisa’s comments. He never overated him.

    • pat

Besides his curveball and changeup he’s def a one pitch pitcher.

      • Matt

He is inconsistent with both pitches, and hangs a lot of curveballs to lefty hitters.

If he doesn’t have that slider, he doesn’t have a single pitch he can consistently trust other than the fastball. That’s why he was hit or miss before he went down to AAA.

The difference between Nova and the rest of the rotation is that he doesn’t have the ability to consistently generate strikeouts. That’s why I would put him at the bottom of the pecking order for the postseason rotation. Pitchers with high strikeout rates have the potential to shut down opposing lineups in a postseason start, while pitchers who pitch to contact are likely to be average more often.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I have to disagree. AJ is not better than Nova. One bad start and all of a sudden he’s worse than a starter who hasn’t had a quality start since June? Nova is better than AJ.

      • Mister Delaware

        Which angle do you want?

        A. Quality starts are a stupid statistic

        B. He’s had three starts “since June”. One missed a QS by a run, one missed by 1/3 of an inning.

      • Matt

Don’t let a few good starts from Nova blind your perception of him either. He’s faced some of the worsts offenses in the league his last few starts as well.

In a postseason start, I would take AJ over Nova every time. Pitching to contact with one pitch might work against mediocre lineups like the Angels, but Burnett at least has the potential to outpitch a top starter because of his strikeouts.

In a playoff start, a guy like Nova is likely to give up at least 3 or 4 runs unless he has that slider. Maybe Burnett is a flip of a coin, but one side of the coin is really good (perhaps 6 IP 1 ER) and the other side may be pretty bad (perhaps 5 IP 4-5 ER). However, if you manage it correctly with the bullpen, you can limit the damage from AJ and likely get a better position.

        • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

You make good points, but AJ should NOT get a playoff start. He can look so good and then just lose it like the ALCS last year. With Nova, when he’s off, you can tell from pretty early in the game. At least that’s how I see it.

      • Matt

        Burnett in August of 2009:

        0-4 6.03 ERA 1.47 WHIP, .266 BAA

        Burnett in August of 2011:

        1-0 7.88 ERA 1.39 WHIP, .222 BAA

Yet, he was lights out in October for a few games because of his stuff. Of course, he gave you a few horrible starts mixed in as well, but when he was good, he was REALLY good, as in he helped the Yankees win games that they probably don’t win with just a quality start.

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

This AJ/Nova bias is bullshit. Nova has been better than AJ since he was called up. That’s not to say he’s good, just that he’s better.

So basically, we acknowledge that Nova and AJ can suck but that AJ sucks a lot more, and consequently when he does we bag on him because he hasn’t turned in a good start in months.

  • YankeesJunkie

Nova should be pulled in favor of Noesi as Nova can’t hit the backside of a barn.

  • Jorge

Bats are going to have win this one tonight.

  • wow

let’s get back in it. put this game away.

  • thaaayankeeswin

reality check time. This is the ROYALS. Yes they are a young team, but also have some pretty good hitters on their team, including an ex Yank who happens to be having his best year ever. Enter the Yankees, this is the Royals World Series…and they are playing in front of the biggest crowd they will have all year even if half of them are Yankee fans. Bottom line is the bullpen will come in and shut this down while their 8 year old pitcher will give up another 4 runs in the next two innings.

    • Jorge

      Exactly.

    • Greg

By your theory, they take three of four from Boston after us.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Duffy got screwed, but he’s a rookie and Mark Teixeira is Mark Teixeira. If he doesn’t get the call, he’s gotta deal with it.

    • The Fallen Phoenix

Every strike should be called a strike, and every ball should be called a ball. Sure, it’s on Duffy that he didn’t execute after that pitch. But whether you’re a rookie pitcher or you’ve been in the league 20 years, if you throw a strike, your pitch should be called a strike.

No pitcher should have to pick up the friggin’ umpire.

      • pat

You’re %100 right, but that’s just not the case with umpires in this day and age.

        • The Fallen Phoenix

That doesn’t mean you can’t (or shouldn’t) bitch about it, though.

          • pat

Disagree with you here. We all recognized the situation as soon as it happened from the comfort of our mothers’ basements. Guaranteed if he throws the same pitch he gets the call the second time around. Instead he got flustered and caught too much of the plate on the next one. WOW Cano. That was a HR derby swing.

      • AaronGuielWithASmile

I’m not excusing the ump missing the call, but when you’re a rookie in this league you have to expect that borderline calls will go to the veterans.

Jawing at the ump and overthrowing your next pitches will accomplish nothing good.

  • pat

Unfortunately when you have hit multiple batters and thrown at least two pitches eye level in that AB you’re never, ever, going to get that call as a rookie.

    • Esteban

LOL. That would be an example of why wins are stupid.

    • Matt

They keep saying how he has never lost a game in which he has been given a lead. Well… look at tonight. Any stat related to wins is always a bit misleading, because it depends on both run support and pitching performance.

What an at bat from Robinson Cano! When A-Rod went down last season, they survived because of how hot Teixeira and Cano got during that stretch, and this year it seems to be Granderson and Cano that have carried the team.

If A-Rod is truly healthy now after the knee surgery, I don’t see how Boston has a better lineup than the Yankees, especially since Adrian Gonzalez has stopped hitting for power in the last two months.

      From a LoHud comment:

The Red Sox pulled off a triple play in this game, but for the second time tonight, the Lowrie-Varitek duo coughs up a run.

They appear to have Jennings in a rundown between 1st & 2nd, but Zobrist is at 3rd, by the time they check the runner, he’s already coming. They throw the ball to Lowrie, who relays to Varitek as Zobrist slides in safely, as the ball bounces away.

So what do we know about Raul Valdes?

    • Mister Delaware

      Likely not irish catholic.

    • JohnnyC

Well, the Cardinals chose to pick up Arthur Rhodes, so maybe Valdes ain’t all that.

      • Mister Delaware

Or maybe Valdes gave a shitty answer when TLR was going around the room telling each player to name something they love about him.

  • Melky

How I wish Melky took the place of our slap hitting left fielder.

Melky career fWAR 6.1, Gardner 14.4 (in much fewer games)

    Well done Nova.

  • Captain Beatty

In this, a shutdown inning, Nova came in and got the job done 1-2-3. AJ Burnett would have given the lead back on 5 pitches.

    • Esteban

Oh jeez. Nova has pitched crappy this game.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

Don’t be silly, AJ couldn’t throw enough strikes to give up 3 runs on 5 pitches.

      Sorry to be a jerk

That’s great it still sucks. I hope someone doesn’t argue that it doesn’t suck but I’m expecting it.

          • MikeD

I agree it sucks. I was fine with the deal at the time. Bottom line is Javy was one of the top three pitchers in the NL the prior year and to get someone of that level requires giving up quality. Unfortunately Javy’s career innings finally caught up with him and he lost three mph off his fastball and hasn’t been the same.

I didn’t expect Vazquez to pitch anywhere near as well as he did in Atlanta, but there was no predicting how bad he became.

The deal made sense. It would make sense to do it again with similar types of talents. It’s done.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Really? I hadn’t heard. It’s only 20 months of non-stop talking about it.

        • Avi

Arodys was in the SAL when Montero was already playing in triple A. Drives me NUTS that he has a win before Montero has an AB.

      • Matt

Definitely not. Dunn and Logan are a wash, Melky was a spare part who put up an even worse WAR than Vazquez last season and was going to see an increase in salary. Vizcaino is the only player in that deal who could be any bit valuable, but he has only thrown a few innings in the big leagues! Jeez.

  • Tex sucks

We can be in first place after this game.

    Crazy maine.

    • tom

I’d have only given him one base runner. Two at the outside. It’s not as if the first three innings didn’t happen; he obviously wasn’t tip-top tonight, and it’s reckless to have tried to extend him this far.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

  • Will

Wow Nova. Wow. Stupid choice of pitches this whole game.

    • Rockstar4Life

You know sometimes it’s actually the team you are facing that beats you. Give the Royals some credit.

      • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

It’s one thing when an offense scratches out three runs in six innings off a pitcher with all of guns a blazin’. But what a good offense does is feast on bad pitches, and that’s what the Royals did tonight.

I like Nova, at least a lot more than I once did. He had a shitty start, so? Why are we all so afraid of admitting that? He obviously threw some terrible pitches tonight.

    • Jetrer

yeah, fastballs down the middle and hanging sliders usually don’t get good results

  • Greg

Everybody stop getting on Girardi. Jesus. YOu’ve got to give the kid a chance to get out of it. Especially when facing a .238 catcher.

    • Guns of the Navarone

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Shut up. Did you not see his last two innings?

Fixed. The “shut up” emotional outburst was unnecessary and only weakens any point you’re trying to make.

Fair enough. I just get so pissed off at these people.

          • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

What do you mean, “these people”??

            • Greg

The people who are crticizing Girardi for things that dont make much sense. I would only crticize him for the really stupid decisions. This was not one of them. He put faith in his starter and his starter failed.

              • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

              • Jetrer

his job is to notice when his starter is struggling and know when to go to the pen. If he left Nova in longer and Nova gave up more runs, would you still say Girardi deserved no criticism, because he was “putting faith in his starter”. How about if he “puts his faith” in Cervelli and bats him cleanup the rest of the season, just to boost his confidence.

          • Avi

I’m not watching the game guys. Just seemed that it was a matter of time beofre they’d score on him again. Even when you’re pitching horribly you’re gonna have scoreless innings.

          • Avi

    • pat

2 innings too long? GTFO He had 2 1-2-3 innings.

  • Guns of the Navarone

Well the strikezone is completely atrocious. I don’t know how an umpire can get away with calling a game like this. But this should also serve as a reminder: Ivan Nova is not that good.

    • JohnnyC

Oh yeah? He’s gooder than AJ.

  • teddy

sick ply be teix thats a rbi triple right there

  • Greg

YOu want to say that Girardi left him in a batter too late. Perhaps. If the next guy up was Albert Pujols. Instead it was a rookie catcher hitting .238. If Joe pulls him there, it does not show alot of confidence which might affect Nova

    • Jetrer

yeah, but 7 runs in 5.1 innings does wonders for his confidence, right?? Taking a pitcher out of a game that he pitched horribly in isn’t going to hurt his confidence any more than his performance already did.

    • Captain Beatty

Not really. He didn’t have much all game and he got himself into trouble again. Joe pulled AJ just last night in the 6th with a weak hitter coming to the plate. Joe has to be quicker to go to his elite pen. That’s what they’re down there for.

      • Greg

So you’re saying that Joe should trust AJ more than Nova.

        • Jetrer

how do you get that from that comment?

        • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

          Nova was worse than AJ.

      • Skip

It’s also August…when October comes he will be very quick to the pen a la pulling Colon against the Sox in the last series during the 5th inning.

No need to burn out the elite pen. Let’s keep them fresh for October and not relive the Torre days of bullpen management.

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Joe showed confidence in him when he let go into the fourth.

    • Will

It shouldn’t matter how Nova feels. As a manager your job is to win ball games regardless of players’ “confidence”. Girardi shouldn’t have gambled and should have gotten Logan/Wade out there after the first baserunner put on by Nova. Could have saved some runs.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Can’t say enough about Tex. Of the big three free agent signings in CC, AJ, and Tex, I can live with 2 of 3 being worth every penny and more.

    Brett Gardner. Good at baseball.

  • MikeD

Brett’s got to be one of the few players in the game when he hits it down the line into the rightfield corner it’s an automatic triple.

Gardner is an excellent baserunner, despite what people think.

The denominators are low enough for both of those that you can argue context.

          • MikeD

You’re picking one element in a partial season, ingorning career stats and the overall aspect of baserunning.

      • MikeD

I know, and I am specifically referring to his baserunning ability. He’s excellent on the bases. People became obsessed by his stolen bases and the bad streak he had and decided he was a bad baserunner. He is not.

  • Ivan

Bret is one of those players where everytime the ball is deep within the outfield, you know its an automatic triple.

  • Cuso

And last night what I said last night about Gardner having taken that next step to become a complete hitter?

    …yeah. All of that.

  • Monteroisdinero

    Dembo-you done Jeets good.

  • Esteban

When ARod comes back, Jeter will be probably be leadoff full time and Gardner will go back to the 9 hole and I’m ok with that. The lineup is gonna be so nasty. Really only one hole (Catcher)

          • http://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Both pitchers would throw a really good inning then blow up the next. The offense would get the runs back and then the pitcher would just give them back. Nova’s pitch count was like 8 then 24 then 9 then 28 or something like that not sure of the actual numbers but you get the idea.

  • jon

    wow that is some delivery

  • MikeD

Collins is not 5’7″. Suzyn Waldman said she’s interviewed him and she’s shorter than she is, and she is 5’5″. Collins is about 5’3″, maybe, maybe 5’4″. Instead of inflating his height, he should go the other direction. Claim he’s only 5’2″ and, yeah, “I’m only 5’2″ and I just struck out your 6’5″, 250lb. MLB ass!” Ron Guidry is Randy Johnson next to Collins.

    • MikeD

      “he’s” shorter than she is.

      • Chen Meng Wang

I’m taller than a major leaguer WOOT!!!! by like 5inches too…this boosts my confidence.

        • MikeD

All you need is that 95mph fastball! Being lefty is good too. My guess is if was a righty he might not have even been signed. Sad, if true.

  • Greg

    94 from Mo tonight

  • Chen Meng Wang

One out away from first place again.

mo lookin good through .2 innings

    slam the door!

  • JohnnyC

Happy with Nova’s effort tonight. He kept the team in the game. All you can ask for.

    • Mister Delaware

Or you can ask for the pitcher to do well independent of his run support / lack of.

    • ItsATarp

And how’d you feel about AJ yesterday?

      • JohnnyC

A tinge of bittersweet remorse and a soupcon of madeleine-like nostalgia. I’m sure you felt the same.

    • Jorge

He was bad. The team picked him up. It happens. Focus on next start.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    First place, bitches.

    wooo ball game over!

    1st place!

  • MikeD

Back in first. If the Yankees ever figure out how to beat Boston this year…

  • Chen Meng Wang

Woot, the Yankees win, now to watch the encore to find out what the fuck went down in the middle innings.

  • CBean

    Yay, Yankees win!

  • Ivan

    95 2 seamer….STD nasty!!!!

  • Esteban

    Happy that WWWMW is over

  • pat

And that’s why Girardi can afford to let Nova try and grind it out. Once the bullpen doors open it’s game over.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

yea for NTWAMAW! (Not too worried about Mo anymore week)

  • flamingo

    First place… it feels good.

  • Jorge

I love it when the team does the job and carries a pitcher who didn’t have his best stuff to victory. Happy 12th victory, Ivan. Pick up the team next time.

  • Ethan

Lol the sports anchor up here in maine said that if the Yankees won the Red sox would only be a half game up. Propaganda BS! Yankees are on top fool! :)

    • Mister Delaware

Near Portland? Awesome food city. And Maine Brewing is spectacular.

      • Mister Delaware

(Maine Beer Company. I believe that’s their actual name.)

      • Ethan

        Nearish Portland

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Save 600 is starting to look possible this year, no?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Shit more than possible actually. Like, get the countdown going possible.

    • MikeD

Nine more to 600, so it is certainly possible. Ten to tie Hoffman and eleven to pass.

All are possible, but save chances are unpredictable over the course of a few weeks. If the Yankees blow other teams out or the Yankees hit a losing streak, then his chances are reduced. It’s also quite possible the Yankees will begin to slow down his innings once they lock up a playoff spot (hopefully) and they want to get him prepared for the postseason.

But, yeah, all are possible this season.

  • pat

I fuckin love Cone. His rundown of the bullpen shutting shit down was hilarious.
