With Irene looming, O’s torpedo DH switch

By

After the Yanks and A’s wrap up their game this afternoon, the Bombers will head to Baltimore for a five-game set which includes a Saturday double header. Unfortunately, Hurricane Irene is also heading to Baltimore, and it’s likely to arrive on Saturday with rains through Sunday. To ensure that the two clubs could get in as many games as possible, the Yankees asked the Orioles and Major League Baseball to switch the double header to tomorrow, but Baltimore and MLB both declined to do so.

According to Jack Curry, who spoke on the topic during the Yankee broadcast, the club and the Commissioner’s Office believe that Monday can be a “cushion.” If any games are rained out this weekend, the two teams can play a double header on Monday instead. In my opinion, that ignores the weather forecast. It’s possible that three games will be rained out this weekend. Had they rescheduled the DH for tomorrow, they could have gotten ensured four games with a potential DH on Monday. Now, if Irene hits as predicted, they may get only three games in. Silly Orioles.

    Morons.

Baltimore is a shit organization. Seems like everyone from the owner down is a jackass.

    • A-Rod’s Wingman

McPhail isn’t anywhere near as dumb as Buck or that piece Angelos.

      • bonestock94

Probably right, McPhail’s dumb moves are probably just Angelos’ interference.

        • Urban

Agreed. McPhail has had a very good reputation over the years. The one consistent person since the O’s started sucking is Angelos, who is a very hands-on owner, as was George, but he he’s had none of the success of George to balance out the bad.

Buck hates us. Happy to stick it to us but we will put it on the motivational bulletin board.

    Putitontheboaaaarrrrddddd Joe!

Revenge for the 12 run 1st inning game a few weeks ago perhaps? :P

  • David, Jr.

Piece of shit of a franchise. Moronic owner. Jerk manager. Lose at least 90 games per year and intentionally throw at people all of the time. Always angry. Always bad.

  • Dennis

Why is mlb against this I understand the orioles r cock blockers but why does mlb back them.

    • Cuso

MLB has to protect the Orioles right to generate revenue.

Friday matinees make a lot less money than Saturday matinees. The Yanks are a good draw for Camden Yards.

The thing is, the tickets are already sold. It doesn’t affect their bottom line. It might affect resale of tickets, but very few would be sold at the gate.

MLB upholds this because the O’s are the home team and can be shits all they want without much recourse.

The organization have nothing to even play for this year, as the beat goes on with them. Funny how we aren’t hearing the “BUCK CHANGED THIS TEAM- THEY ARE THE MOST WINNING TEAM SINCE HE TOOK OVER” anymore.

There is a reason why Buck keeps losing the manager job.

  • Captain Beatty

This is why their franchise has been in a hole for almost 15 years. They don’t think logically. We’re going to have an extra game to make up because of this.

  • Kiersten

Why did MLB not approve this? They’re more than likely going to have 3 games to make up after this weekend. How is Monday a “cushion”? Quadrupleheader?

    • the other Steve S.

Seven inning jobs like they do in the minors. Should be able to get three in at least.

  • Urban

Can the Yankees refuse to play the games, meaning if they are so far ahead in the playoff hunt that they decide to forfeit the two games if they’re scheduled for later in September? No Yankee revenue for you, Mr. Angelos!

  • viridiana

Always tough to tell whether Selig is trying to screw the Yankees — or just a total nitwit.

I laughed pretty hard at this for some reason.

My guess is, if Buck has to play these games against the Yankees, he may as well do it as make-ups after Sept 1st when he’ll be able to take a look at what he’s got down on the farm, and overmanage lefty-righty matchups LaRussa-style with the expanded roster.

He already knows the shit he has on the 25-man roster–nothing to gain by pushing them now.

  • Hall and Nokes

Should have moved the series to a neutral city. Won’t affect the number of Oriole fans at the games.

Writing my angry letter right at this moment.

The spineless Selig could have stepped in and made suggestions but wouldn’t.

He was too busy picking out an ugly suit to wear.

This is the Yanks last trip to Baltimore this year. I hope the O’s wind up getting screwed out of the two gates when the games become irrelevant late in the season and don’t get rescheduled.

  • LarryM.,Fl.

The Orioles are going nowhere and if the entire weekend is washed out or 4 games. The Yanks will have to schedule these games on days off between road trips possibly playing doubleheaders on their days off. Sure its September and the AAA guys will get some work but these games could be meaningful to the Yanks just added stress to the team as opposed to the remainder of the division.

I don’t see how MLB could not see the situation.

  • yoo-boo

Several east teams already changed the schedules but not for Orioles game. I guess 48 hours in advance is a factor.

  • http://none Favrest

No team should ever be given the right to decide when they play a game. The inmates are running asylum.

  • nathan

Wait let me get this straight, Boston’s against Athletics on Sunday was moved to Saturday and they will play 2 on Saturday and none on SUnday but the same request was turned down by MLB (and the O’s) for the Yanks

Hahaha… yes that makes total sense

  • Bavarian Yankee

    let’s play a triple header :D

I think the last triple header was played in the late 1920s btw.
