Game 144: Will the offense show up?
ByThe Yankees are in a collective offensive funk at the moment. They’ve scored just one run in their last 16 innings, and that was Jesus Montero‘s solo homer last night. Aside from that, they’ve managed just two hits (both singles), four walks, and one hit batsman since Alfredo Simon left after the four inning of Thursday’s game. No runner has even made it past first base. These things happen over the course of the season, so hopefully the Yankees will bust out of it tonight. Here’s the starting nine…
Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Jesus Montero, DH
Eric Chavez, 3B
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, RF – first career start in the outfield, majors or minors
Brett Gardner, LF
CC Sabathia, SP
The game starts a little after 9pm ET and can be seen on YES locally or MLB Network nationally.

Montero hitting 5th, nice!
Given the lack of offense recently, it sort of makes sense that Girardi plays Nunez instead of Dickerson and Golson. Not the ideal plan, but they need offense.
haha poor nunez
Game 144: Will the offense show up?
Short Answer: Yes, with an if.
Long Answer: No, with a but.
But… your long answer is shorter than your short. DOES NOT COMPUTE.
As long as Montero’s in that lineup we’ll have at least some offense. With the big man on the mound that may be all we need.
Nunez is getting the start (audition) because it’s becoming clear that Montero is a lock and the Yanks do want to have Posada on the posteason roster. Carrying both of them means a spot can’t go to Dickerson or Golson as backup OF/pinchrunner. Which increases the importance of Nunez being able to play the OF in an emergency.
Not really though, with a 4 man rotation, and likely a 6 man bullpen, there’s probably two open spots, not just one. So they could carry Montero in addition to the regular season position players, and still have one free spot.
I think they’ll go with 11 pitchers, which means the choice has to be made. We’ll see.
montero will hit a homerun and a double
He loves it when you call him Big STOPPA.
Time for Carsten Charles to do his thang.
awww yea Cap’n!
Anyone know why this game wan;t a day game?
Must score here at all costs.
Lead off double? Yes please.
Starting off well, when Jeter plays well the yankees do
Staten Island showing this is an auspicious night for Nunezes.
great job derek
We needed that an out prior.
Jesus bored of hitting from the right side?
Jesus thinking about filling in for Swish.
Whoooooooooo, leadoff double wasted, yeah!
Horrible approach Yankees. Wasting a leadoff double is inexcusable.
fail
What is the Yankees Babip this year?
On the plus side, no strike outs.
And we got to second base.
Seriously this team neesd to learn how to play at least of bit of smallball. Not saying bunt but move runners over.
Granderson was the main culprit.
And the one to be blamed that inning is Curtis Granderson. Didn’t even move the runner over.
Exactly
shouldve bunted! girardi fail!
He’s not saying bunt but pull the ball on the ground to move the runner over.
So in other words, bunt.
How about trying to hit the ball through a hole on the right side?
how do you know that’s not what he was trying to do?
+1
Robbie Cano. So smooth.
Keith Stone smooth.
Cano’s sooo lazy. He could’ve dove and done a double barrel roll to get to that ball.
/Pedroia’d
infield hit counter for Angels this series: 3.
That few? Seems like they’ve had at least 10 of the things.
Yeah, more cheap base hits!
At some point they’re going to test Nunez’s arm in RF and he will deliver. Book it.
I know Bourjos is fast but did that really have to be done bare handed?
Cano has one of the quickest catch/transfer/flick a throw across his body moves I’ve ever seen
Just got online so backtracking. Leiter said Jeter doubled off a fb (twice) but it was a curve/offspeed pitch. Jeets rarely pulls fbs to deep lf.
Psyched for Jesus tonight batting 5th. Way to go Joe G!!!!!
That’s 4.
infield hit counter for Angels this series: 4.
Jeez. How lucky can they get?
Another infield single….wow
Jeets-no laser arm.
Damon-esque
Wells has a .252 OBP, throw strikes
CC’s gotta get out of this. If multiple runs score that could be it without how much our offense is scuffling.
Phew. That could have gotten ugly.
That did get ugly in terms of pitch count. Not that it was all CC’s fault – how many infield hits can a team get?
Disappointed that Golson-who hits righties well-is not in there.
massive .752 OPS vs. Triple A RHP
30 pitches… we could see Aaron Laffey by the 5th inning at this rate.
Does anyone else get the sense that Girardi really wants him as a second lefty in the pen for the postseason and is going to give him a ridiculous # of chances to see if he can?
Jesus will not be stopped.
Big swing single by Jesus…..
6 game hitting streak!!!!!
SI Yankees win the game. Going to the finals.
Jesus is not scared of Weaver, Haren, Santana or Felix.
This. He need only be scared of the binder but he will soon have his own large section in it.
Lester too.
good job jesus
Jesus gets it going. The number of guys I’d trade him for continues to decline on a daily basis.
First step in Montero’s cycle.
Montero stays back so well. Remember that line drive out to rf last night was on a changeup.
great inning, offense.
Well that went from promising to dejecting pretty damn quick….
Still scuffling.
Its like Jesus has gone Space Jam on the rest of the Yankees. He’s stolen all their talent.
When not bored he is on another level but he will take his disciples with him.
Watching Haren cover first makes me hope that CC’s poor fielding hopefully won’t hurt us in a tight game.
with A Rods career numbers at this ballpark, why is he not in? esp. since they are missing swish too
Have you not heard that A-Rod is out with the Bad thumb…again.
no didnt hear that…just turned on the game
Sadly, at this point, ‘still’ might be a more apt description than ‘again’.
jammed (or whatever) thumb… still day to day
injured thumb
Arod is injured and out for 4 games. Get used to it for the next SEVEN years.
Because he’s the highest paid coaches assistant ever?
and pumpkin seed spitter-don’t forget that.
Four Centerfielders!!
holding my breath on that one
Nunez is going to be an adventure out there.
Why does Nunie wear his hat one size too big? He finally got a helmet that fits, and now this?
Mathis? come on CC.
Nice 0-2 pitch… I realize it’s Mathis and you want to keep the pitch count down, but that is terrible
wow we’re fucked
Crap, crap, crap.
Posada to catch!
Or put Montero behind the plate and let CC hit – it might just be an improvement.
Call up Romine!
Oh man, we do not need Russell hurt….
Please be okay Russ….
It already looked like its bruising, I bet he’s out
Wow, what a badass
Oh crap….
Yikes!!!! That shit hurts just looking at it.
Another damn 0-2 pitch
Poor read by Grandy.
He does this often. Not Willie Mays or even Paul Blair out there.
Two 0-2 doubles……c’mon CC
I’m gonna stop watching these games until the playoffs. too frustrating.
This has been such a fail of a game so far.
back to back 0-2 doubles. to Mathis and Izturis no less. Unacceptable.
And the Angels didn’t waste their double as we did. You just have to wonder how many runs we can scratch across. CC has to hold them at 1.
Well, those hard hit balls we’ve been getting off Haren had better start falling in now….
Mathis and Izturis with doubles. wow
Sweet baby Jesus may catch.
Then we lose the DH. We become an NL team, which actually might be apropro given how our offense is.
But CC likes to hit. Maybe this is just what the team needs.
Nothing else seems to be working – I’m all for it. But only because it’s CC.
Always worth a shot, right?
Posada…. wtf….
reply fail on my end
If Martin is out we better hope that 5-3 score holds in Tampa. The Angels will run and run and run and run on Montero.
Montero>>>>Posada. We shall all see this.
This has Murphy’s law written all over it
Mathis has killed us before and he is doing it again as CC makes stars out of scrubs.
I do like Gardner but a few days off maybe????
I don’t know. It seems to help on occasion, but not always. He did sit out one against Boston, and of course, most of that day game on Wednesday. Of course, the last couple of days have been pretty ugly, but before Wednesday he was hitting and starting to come out of it.
Also, you can’t really say he needs a day off without pointing out that Granderson is also in a pretty ugly slump.
Lets face it. Almost everybody is in an epic slump.
Epic might be a bit of a strong word. It’s been a tough week.
Well kiss this game goodbye
Fuck. The Yankees are dropping like flies.
If baserunners get on they’re just gonna run on Jesus all night. Arod gone, Martin gone, Swisher gone. And we haven’t even been trying to win ballgames.
they haven’t been trying to win??? That’s about the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
The manager has not been trying to win. If he has please explain why we lost ballgames with Scott Proctor, Aaron Laffey, and Luis Ayala on the mound in the deciding inning.
who would you want to pitch? You could use Mo for an inning, but that just delays the crappy pitchers for one inning, they would still be pitching in a deciding inning. There is a big difference between not trying to win and not running the bullpen into the ground with overuse. Wade, DRob, Mo, and Soriano, can’t pitch every bullpen inning in every game. Occassionally they need rest, and Girardi is stuck using shittier pitchers. It’s not that he’s not trying to win, he’s using the best available of limited options.
Jesus…..catcher?
No
Wow Jorge gets his chance
Posada catching? christ.
No. He stays at DH.
Heh.
LOL! Posada gonna catch. Now they’re gonna run even more.
Posada…..catcher?
Look at Tex! He’s pumped.
No its Jorge!
posada!!!
This game is just…..
what?
Murphy’s law all up in this bitch.
Jorge
Ugh, posada…
Yes! I’ve got a good feeling that Jorge is gonna wake this team up
Well, you figured Posada was going to catch at least once this year – might as well have it be now when everything else is going wrong.
I would have liked to see just what Montero could do behind the plate, though.
You will and he will surprise everyone. Much better arm than Posada.
Infield single #5
more infield hits, amazing.
Good grief…. another infield hit
Donning the tools of ignorance.
lol
Jorge says no steal for you!
Owned
You don’t run on Posada….
LOLOLOL at Kendrick.
SADO!
JORGE SAYS NO!
ZOMBIE JORGE!
He got him!
Insane…you can’t predict baseball
JORGE!!!!
JORGE! HIP HIP!
yaaaaay fuck you kendrick
Hip hip……… Jorge!!
Posada is all “Suck it Angels.”
And Cano continues his awesomeness.
lols
WTF?
Kendrick really can’t run to get thrown out on THAT.
I saw the catching gear on a guy with #20 and my thought was they gave Gustavo Molina #20?
Any questions, Scioscia???
CC2k!
With all these injuries, it’s almost like Girardi playing overly-cautiously, almost scared, with his lineups and playing time isn’t the right thing to do…
What are you?
Um, a person commenting on a Yankees blog?
Remember that blow out game we’ve been needing? Now would be a good time for it.
hopefully Jorge sparks this team
Is this really how much the Yankees don’t trust Montero to catch? If he’s not going to catch in the next few days with the catching squad hurting, he’s definitely not catching at all this season. And as I’m typing, Posada throws out Kendrick! Anything can happen in baseball.
Do you want CC getting injured on the basepaths ala Chien Ming Wang?
Eh, fair point.
you lose the DH if Montero catches, Yankees can’t afford to lose any more offense
Montero will catch and he will be fine.
It was only a matter of time before someone drew this asinine conclusion. How about they didn’t want to give up the DH in the 3rd inning and either risk Sabathia batting or be forced to lift him for a PH.
I smell 3 years / $36MM.
I smell the tip of my finger.
Both images stink.
Postseason roster solution… no Cervelli?
Posada as backup catcher / Montero DH (emergency catcher)
This posada guy looks legit behind the plate, framing pitches, moving around quickly, gunning down runners
good lord…CC 60 pitches in 3 innings????
With all these guys in the pen out for tonight, it’s sounding like we need 120 from CC, to Dellin, to Kontos.
chavy….thats a big boy play
Nice play Tex.
Great play by the Zombie Chavez
Hilarious Zombie Comment.
It’s just amazing how many balls they hit in the infield away from fielders. It either goes for a hit or someone has to make a great throw to 1st.
One good thing: Posada will be hitting from his better side. At least this didn’t happen against a lefty.
Could Austin Romine be called up tomorrow just for precautionary reasons? I’m not sure if he’s on the 40 man, but I’m sure there’s a likely casualty that could get booted from the 40 man.
Aaron Laffey?
I was thinking Valdes or Garrison, but wouldn’t be shocked if it’s Mr. Laffey Taffey.
We have alot of useless bodies on our roster right now. Time for Golson!
A run or two here would be reallllllllly nice.
wow Grandy
Grandy needs a day off…but we really have no players to giv ehim one.
He’s had days off and has still struggled.
he’s had like 1 or 2 in the past month
He’s not going to snap out of it sitting on the bench.
Mike, there you go again letting facts interfere with the narrative.
Well Long said he was tired…just going by what i hear. =\
I mean, yes, they are all tired. But there’s not much to be done about that.
No MVP for Grandy with this slide
Haren is picking the Yankees apart.
Yup. He’s a good pitcher so that will happen.
/CouldatradedforHaren
Still trying to find out if Joba was really the hold up in the deal. Many fans have different takes on this.
I agree that mortgaging the future in trades isn’t always the best way to go but Haren is an ace and the Yankees are morons for having missed out on him. I would’ve given up Banuelos, Betances, Noesi, Nova, or Joba. Basically anyone but Montero for this guy. With good starting pitching as hard as it is to find these days the Yankees were shockingly passive with Haren.
Granderson is so bad now, I think k long and grandy need to take a trip to Arlington to fix things
It always amuses me that Scott Boras is chilling back there like a creeper.
Changeups Mark. Remenber you can’t hit them.
Has anyone worked the count to 3-2 tonight against Haren?
Save us Jesus Montero!!!!!!!!!
save us, anyone!!!!!
Yankee grounders = outs
Angel grounders = singles
CC needs to be more efficient now.
CC needs a 6 pitch inning
Argh. This series came at the worst possible time.
Some poor pitching, no offense, over 60 pitches for cc in 3 innings, 40 pitches for haren in 4. looks like the team has taken the standpoint of many people here that they don’t care about the games and are willing to settle for possibly just sneaking into the playlets.
/frustrationrising
This is going complete game shutout…. 42 pitches in 4 innings for Haren
Girardi needs to wake up…. Tex from the leftside is no longer a #3 hitter. He should be hitting 5th or 6th (and move down when ARod comes back). Keep plugging him in 3rd against lefties but the guy is hitting .222 lefty with an OPS of .783 (the OPS is OK, but not for a #3 hitter)
Inserting Nunez and his .664 OPS against righties is also not injecting offense… (and is downgrading defense on top of it)
Waaaaaaah I blame my manager for the bad offense waaah
Thanks, as always your insight is amazing…
You apparently like a guy hitting .222 to bat 3rd… and like to insert backup infielders into the OF with a sub .700 OPS against righties to inject offense.
Who exactly is supposed to bat third? Everyone in the lineup is stuck in a rut.
And who is this offensive dynamo that could have played instead of Nunez?
Cano? Even just moving him down to the 5 spot means more AB’s for Cano. Heck Russell Martin has almost the same #’s against righties (not saying he should hit 3rd)
And the point on Nunez is why DOWNGRADE the defense if you aren’t getting offense? What are you gaining by sticking Nunez in RF?
Dickerson and Golson can’t give you a .664 OPS with far better defense?
So blame the guy hitting .222 then, dont blame the manager.
Would you be OK with him hitting Nunez 3rd…. and if Nunez failed we should blame Nunez? How about slotting Gardner in the # 3 spot… don’t blame Girardi if Gardner doesn’t hit, right
Why is Tex predetermined to be the #3 hitter…. at some point put the hitters where they belong in the lineup. Tex batting lefty is not a #3 hitter… this is multiple years, not a few months in a slump.
So do you want to drop Jeter against RHP as well?
If Garnder is hitting sure… why not? (Heck is Swisher was healthy I’d hit him leadoff against lefties if needed)
ok, if everyone was healthy with normal lineup, where would you bat Jeter?
Leadoff against lefties, 8th against righties…
I don’t think they’ll hit him 9th for PR reasons…
How does this change plugging a .222 hitter into the #3 spot again?
Not at all. I’m just curious because many are complaining about Tex batting third without saying anything about Jeter batting first against RHP, even though, based on the splits, Jeter batting first is a lot less defendable than Tex batting third.
dude, you seriously are going to need to acknowledge that there are some real concerns about this team
I’m not saying they are not. But his blame is misguided to Girardi. That’s the point. Maybe he should blame the players for a change!
point taken…but Girardi has made some questionable calls lately. We all understand guys are tired and now we have some injury concerns…but these are not throw away games. The Red Sox wont be down for long..as a mater of fact just tied the game. The Yanks missed some very real opportunities to pad this lead
what should they have done differently? Run the good part of the bullpen into the ground?
again…I think everyone gets it, but its frustrating to watch. We are all Yankee fans… want this team to dominate always
With all the hoopla of Jorge being put into the game the YES crew neglected to mention that CC got his 2000th strikeout last inning.
strike zone seems to have shrunk from the last half inning
Walking Mathis….Why?
how the fuck do you walk Jeff fucking Mathis?
WALK TO MATHIS? god dammit CC what the fuck.
What the fuck CC.
Give Dellin a shot, it’s not as if the offense is going to come back the way theyre swinging anyway
While I like the idea… do you really want to subject Posada to that?
good entertainment value anyways
Rothschild looks frustrated. Can’t say that I blame him.
what???? no booming double?
fucking Farnsworth reverting to his Yankee form
So I ended up lying.
Just because I have to say, “Kyle motherfucking Farnsworth.”
FARNSWORTH
/shakesfist
Damn, even Montero is in a slump now….
Oh, and screw Kyle Farnsworth.
Well if the Rays lose our magic number goes down.
Chavez gives a souvenir to the Yankee fan in the stands, what a nice guy
Damn, couldn’t find the clip from Dodgeball where Cotton McKnight celebrates a fan’s good fortune.
I’m almost hoping Dan Haren pitches a CG shutout since we’re not coming back anyway.
Letter: There are extra arms down there.
Girardi: Really? Where??? I thought we only called up proctor and laffey.
maybe not the best idea to have someone make their MLB debut in a tie game on the road
Oh please, its sad how many people fall into that. Are they suddenly going to spontaneously combust? Will those scary angels fans break them down into tears? Suck it up and see what you have, not what you know you don’t have.
I’m not saying they will be scarred for life. I’m saying that’s a very tough situation to bring them in and not have them affected by nerves. It’s not like Proctor or Ayala have never thrown a scoreless inning, and they are a lot less likely to fall apart because of nerves. Most likely, the game outcome will not change either way anyways.
It’s also not a tie game, but anyway…
was referring to the past 3 games, since nobody knows yet who will be used today, but anyway
this team needs some days off.
Remember that time when the Yankees scored? That was awesome.
dead offense is dead
Fuck
This has CGSH written all over it.
Is there something in the air that makes teams stop hitting on the West Coast?
Smog?
Maybe. “Low offensive environment.”
Must be the same stuff in the shitty fireworks…
Haren toying with our lefty fb hitters. Let’s go Tampa!!!!
I miss runs.
At some point, this offense will get going. It has to happen eventually.
I think?
If this were the Giants, I’d say no. But for this team? Yes. It has to happen eventually. Let’s hope it’s soon.
Sometimes I think Leiter has had a few concussions himself.
what was that thing the yanks use to do? oh yeah score runs
Ortiz=Clutch
Hey, he’s the David that beat Goliath.
Ramos cleaning up Farnsworth’s mess
I’m so tired of all the whining and excuses of being tired and all the games they’ve played. They’ve been given so many days off each over the last couple weeks that some of the games haven’t really existed for everyone. And really, they only had one extra game added beyond what was already scheduled, and they didn’t really show up for that game (or at least the one before with the Scranton lineup) in reality anyway.
The team is down one run. Reading this shit you’d think they were just stricken with aids and cancer simultaneously.
Have you watched this team the last 4 days?
Oh noes–are you saying that A-Rod has thumb cancer and Swisher has Elbow AIDS?????
Actually I would totally believe Swisher and AIDS.
Yea, they’ve sucked, it happens. Doesn’t help they’ve faced 2 aces after a nasty schedule either. We’re fortunate enough that the Red Sox are sucking too.
This team is fucking fried.
Fuck Buck Showalter and the Orioles for making the Yankees play at 2:30 at night in pouring rain and then forcing them to have to play a DAY in Baltimore the next day which was a scheduled off day.
*DAY game
To be fair, the day game was in New York the next day, then they went to Baltimore for their off day.
But yeah, screw the Orioles.
Buck didn’t make them play that late game.
And the O’s are 3-1 since starting that night game. The Yankees are 0-3, on their way to 0-4. The O’s aren’t whining about it every night.
The Orioles did force the Yankees to play the game in Baltimore that was supposed to be a scheduled off day. But point taken.
OMG stop walking people
Where the fuck are these pitches missing?
Seriously, this guy went to the Angel Hernandez Umpiring Academy.
Down the middle? Hardest pitch for geriatric umps to see, they use sound.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST TRUMBO HAS A SUB 300 OBP
God damn it CC
this 1-0 game feels like 20-0
Except it’s not.
/justsayin
alright…time for some runs
I just started watching. It looks like we’re down 12-0 and being perfect game’d and CC suffered a season ending injury. And all this while the Rays are creeping closer to the Yankees for that WC!
Well, at least he made em work.
Silly Nunez, only the Angels can turn weak grounders into base hits.
Get prepared to lose these low scoring pitching duels come October. By losing to the Angels we’ve ensured that they’ll be right there with Texas after this series. They may be our 1st round opponent- Weaver, Haren, Santana which is better than what we got.
Yes, after yesterday’s blowout and today’s laugher, the Yankees may as well just pull a Russian hockey team.
Too soon.
Agreed, way too soon to start panicking about playoff matchups.
That 20-run outburst that seems to happen after periods of futility couldn’t come a second too soon here.
These guys need a nap.
They need something to somewhat artificially inflate their run differential and pythagorean record…
Because runs don’t count unless they come in a close game!
Of course they count, that’s why I said ‘somewhat’. I just don’t think bombing away on the bad pitchers of a bad part of the bullpen on a night those bad pitchers don’t even have their normal bad stuff isn’t truely indicative of an offense’s real ability.
scoring 20 runs in a game isn’t indicative of an offenses real ability? You don’t say?
And yet everyone says the run differential and pythag are the best indicators of a team’s ability level… That’s the hypocrisy.
except no team has a consistent offense, every team has monster games and low scoring games. Every team is on a level playing field in that regard, so run differential and pythag do tell you something.
It could just be that it means they’ve won one more 20-1 game than everyone else.
it could, but it doesn’t
They are. If you want a team that spends all summer playing tight games because you like to see a good record in one-run games, be my guest.
It’d be nice to know they can win low-scoring/one-run games.
I’m impressed that one comment of mine led to all this.
The “stat-padding” line of thought some commenters on here have has to be one of the sillier things I’ve ever read from a fan, and this is coming from someone who’s been stuck watching the Mike Francesa TV show for hours at a time.
FACT: The Yankees have NEVER won a one-run or low-scoring game. EVER.
Wharrgarbl? Wharrgarbl.
Inside curveball=Jeter HR
Oh, look at that, another 1-2-3 inning. How…unexpected.
70 pitches through 6.
Izturis-the new Brooks Robinson.
Has Kay been saying “Danny Haren” the whole game?
only 70 pitches for Haren!
The last 3 days do remind me alot of last September. Time to empty the bench tomorrow.
They did that 3 days ago. How’d that work out?
We are fortunate to be down only 1. CC doesn’t have it tonight
If CC didnt have it, trust me, the Yankees would be down a whole bunch of runs.
The Angels aren’t a good offense. It’s not like it’s AJ out there with nothing…
Just get through one more inning CC.
And that’s the winning run on 2nd. We couldn’t play situational baseball in the 1st, watch the Angels push that run across with Scocia ball.
looked like the ball hit him
Why is he throwing curveballs when a guy is trying to bunt (that is easier to get donw)
At this point, wouldn’t the winning run be the one that already scored?
LOL! Posada’s so awful.
The ball definitely hit the batter.
WHAT THE FUCK?
I hate the Angels so much, this is amazing.
cmon now
Oh LOL
These umps are pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, umps?
The ball hit the batter. Male the right call umps.
*Make
Annnd they made the right call. Robot Umps have been held off. For now.
good boys
and that ladies and gentlemen might be game over
Sciosia is sickening.
get your fat butt back in the dugout.
Sioscia is such a prick. wtf is he doing arguing an obvious call like that???
If they missed the call, we could have labeled this an ump loss and ignored the fact that they are getting sodomized by Haren.
this is getting ridiculous
CC wat r u doing?
No sac for you Aybar.
So CC throws is right at the guy. This is over, folks. One or two runs score here and that’s just too much for this struggling offense to overcome against Haren.
I think he threw at him. CC is one of our few guys who will do that on his own.
If he threw at him intentionally, it was incredibly stupid. They’re not in a position to give up free baserunners just to try to prove a point.
Well lets hope the offense gets this fixed or else we are screwed.
Ummmm………duh?
Wow Chavez…
wow…uh foul?
That was fucking foul.
he got that in foul territory.
GJ Chavez
That ball WAS foul.
This team is in trouble…. Horrible offense, horrible defense…
CC was just gonna walk Mathis anyway. Good play by Chavez.
Chavez pulling a Nunez.
I actually like that play. With CC’s control problems I think he would have walked MAthis.
They’re putting all of their eggs into the double play basket with that intnetional BB.
Or not.
And their plan is to double up the Angels fastest runner.
CC’s gonna walk in a run
I told my dad the same thing before that pitch…Glad I was wrong but inning is not over.
Why is CC still in this ballgame? He doesn’t have anything.
Who you gonna put in Brackman?
Joes book says “Scott Proctor” him.
I think because I heard that more than half of the 12 man bullpen is either unavailable or a rookie who’s never thrown a pitch in the majors.
Who would you rather have out there?
Because the bullpen is exhausted.
lol I was worried Trout would beat that.
dagger imminent.
wish you would step off that ledge my friend
Stay healthy Jorge!!!!!!!!!!!
That is why he is a ace….
holy shitttttttttt
Lova ya CC!!
CHAVY holy shit! the defense was great that inning
yeah, but Chavez’ strategic decision? His mojo was not turned on.
Very nice.
I would hope this would fire up the offense, but I doubt it.
I really thought that was going to be another cheap ass infield hit
Yeah CC!!!!!!!
Now score some freaking runs!
Chavanagila!!!!
Any doubts about CC’s value as a top 5 pitcher in MLB????
Great job by CC there. Too bad it will likely go to waste in a 1-0 loss.
I’m holding out hope that a big defensive inning is enough to jolt the offense awake.
Nice play, Sir Tex!
time to score 10 runs
I’d be cool with just 1 the way things are going
I’d be happy with one baserunner the way things are going.
CC’s line when sucking > most pitchers doing well
Epic survival by the Yanks.
Chavez and CC.
The best thing was hitting Aybar, as luck would have it.
Luck? I think not. CC hit him with purpose after Sciosia came out to do his bullshit argument.
I’m sure they really got the message, then.
Yesssss he got out of it now score some damn runs plz
now let’s score some runs…middle of the order
Sooooooo….guess that “small ball” didnt work uh…
Jennings hit a leadoff triple against Bard
God bless Desmond Jennings.
8 hits, 4 walks in 6 innings.
Battling and scattering.
geez grandy….just look horrible
OMG Curtis. Yikes.
So the upside to Nunez in right is having a real 3B that inning.
Granderson has cost himself the MVP. He looks like Adam Dunn up there.
Granderson swings at the same pitches every AB.
Granderchump.
Grandersuck
(Just lately.)
HOF Jennings about to score for Tampa.
rays tripple…no outs
Gutty, gritty, professional, crafty performance. What a gamer.
Would have been nice if he had been more efficient though.
Jennings lead off triple of Bard, TB trying to walk off
Boston loses.
rays walk off!!!
god, Haren is destroying this offense.
Sox lose again!!
Tex cannot hit changeups. I’d throw it underhand to him.
Haren making a nice case for runner up for the Cy Young.
The Sox have lost, Girardi. Wave the white flag and bring in Scott Proctor.
Haren CGSHO
This offense needs a day off…
Man, Dan Haren is on point tonight. At least Boston lost again, they can take another consequence-free L.
these Pitchers have been amazing for the Angels….too bad they wont be in the playoffs
Don’t be so sure of that. The Angels are creeping up right behind Texas.
Rangers fans are rooting for the Yanks this weekend, and are not pleased.
Dan Haren is good at baseball. I wish he played for the Yankees.
Neither Weaver or Haren have thrown over 90 mph. See that Phil?
Well, at least Boston continues to suck.
Teixeira from the left side is mark reynolds evil (or good) twin…less k’s, more pop-ups. their triple slash is almost identical though
Haren would have made a nice number 2 behind CC.
Just got in. Has this game been as horrible as the box score suggests?
Pretty much, yeah.
Note that most of Anaheim’s hits are either infield singles or ground balls with eyes.
Good to know.
worse….
Painful
wow, this game is a world of suck. gotta steal this one somehow and break out tomorrow.
Stop giving them free base runners!
Noesi struggles putting guys away.
He studied at the Phil Hughes school of pitching
+1 for myself.
+1 for my +1.
Do they teach this crap in the minors?
Will Montero get hit? The Angels need to protect their players from this bush league shit.
IS it possible for the yankees to just forfit a game and take the day off? I would be 100 percent behind that decision
I thought that’s what they’ve been doing the last couple days already…
Martin stops that…
Will Soriano be on the postseason roster? He is fucking terrible.
Mike I thought you liked Noesi?
I do. Why do you think I don’t? Unless you’re talking to another Mike…
Walks to Mathis and Trumbo.
Yea, that makes me want to put needles in my eyes.
This fucking team is killing me. It is like they went from awesome to suck in a matter of 2 games.
4 games. The two Orioles losses and these two games.
And they can go from suck to greatness in a matter of moments as well.
Hey Kay, No Ayala means thats pretty good.
He’s theoretically better than someone who’s never thrown a pitch before.
Theoretically.
Yankees to all fans: we just checked our bank accounts and we are all still millionaires and even though you say we need rest, after this game we are going out drinking and banging woman you people can only dream of even looking at. Thanks for your concern.
These guys are warriors!
It’s TOUGH work to stand around on a field spitting or sit on a bench playing grab ass for 3 hours.
Sterling will be ecstatic if the Yanks lose again. He jizzed in his pants last night. Did he grow up an Angels fan?
A Yankees fan from birth. Grew up in Manhattan.
Did Hector study at the David Robertson school of pitching? Put ‘em on to give them hope and then strike them out?
Shoot. I guess not.
Thats game
This game sucks in so many ways…
fucking Trout
Fuck you Mr. BABIP.
I would like to know what we have to anger the BABIP gods.
so frustrating.
Another run… that will do it… Well at least Boston sucks as bad as the Yankees do right now.
Hope the post season is kinder.
At this rate, God help us make the ps….good night all
and here we go…
Angels getting so much BABIP this game
fuckity fuck fuck
It could be worse…we could be in Boston’s shoes.
I’d feel so much better about this if we were legitimately getting beat instead of giving up the most pathetic hits this side of Justin Bieber, and were actually capable of scoring a run.
3-0 feels like 15-0 now.
Okay, I take that back.
The Yankees are getting out fundamental’d and out intangible’d.
The reason we’re losing is not Noesi or the pitching, it’s the anemic offense. And I don’t wanna hear about guys being injured. We’ve still got Grandy, Teixera, and Cano in the middle of the lineup and none of those guys is doing anything.
Thank god the Yanks have a true ace who can go toe to toe against other aces and pick up his team.
Oh wait… nevermind. He’s fat and out of the game already.
Moron
lol
I thought you liked Noesi Mike?
can the kids pitch now?
Jeff Mathis…are you shitting me?
Angels look like a tough team if they get in. Don’t need to score alot with their pitching.
Jeff Mathis-.176 cleanup hitter batting 9th.
Bring on Betances!!
+1
At this point, why not?
Mathis? Give me a fucking break.
Right? That guy isn’t slumping, he’s bad. And he gets a double and a home run tonight? Plus whatever else…
.176 double, homerun…STUD
Well that pretty much sums up tonight.
Really? Really? Jeff Mathis is fucking awful. This should not be happening.
Jeff Mathis……Yankee killer.
Steinbrenner would’ve traded Banuelos for him.
And BOOM, RAB implodes…
p.s. I loved Mathis in The Notebook
Fucking losers. Enjoy getting slept tomorrow
Freudian slip?
lol Yankees lol
oh man!!!!!!
This just in- Detroit is rapidly closing in on us for best record. Tampa is rapidly closing in on a wild card berth. The Angels have pulled to within 1 of Texas. Weaver-Haren-Santana is a death sentence in a 5 game series especially with Jeff Mathis hitting home runs.
Slump > Entire season. Makes perfect sense.
Seriously! all this BABIP talk is pointless and without merit. There can’t be bad or unlucky BABIP when a team can’t make decent contact. Strike outs, flailing at bad pitches, pop ups, weak hit fly balls…. That is not bad BABIP that is just bad hitting.
It’s the angels…they are makign shitty contact up til the hr and getting hits
Bring in the kids, see what they can do, and let’s try and get a least one run in this game.
Anaheim = hell
They will win the West and beat the Yankees in the first round like they did in 2006.
Just a slump from a tired team, this team is more beatable than they were in ’09 imo.
The latter “team” referring to the angels
I think you underestimate the psychotic nature of this offense. They don’t slump for 2-3 games, it is 2-3 weeks.
We’ll see, you know they’ll get tons of rest later this month.
They’ve been getting tons of rest. The excuses are sad…
I’m not making excuses, sucking is sucking. But they haven’t been getting tons of rest, that’s bullshit.
Every player has been given a game or more off. Hell, that one game they basically played the AAA team. The O’s are 3-1 since those games everyone points to, while the Yankees are 0-4. Nobody hears the O’s whining about it.
The Yankees are older. They traveled to the west coast. The O’s went a few hours north.
hitting the panic button now.
eject, eject.
oh boy!!!
Well, that’s the last we’ll see of Noesi this year.
I think I speak for everyone when I say emphatically, “Meh.”
At least we get to see Kontos….
George Kontos? Did Scott Proctor change the spelling of his name?
Judging by the results, no.
Yankees to all fans: Don’t worry…L.A. girls are easy…they love celebs. We will still get plenty of vagine even though we sucked tonight. Thanks for your concern
Man, last season made me forget how much I fucking hate the Angels. These last couple of games have refreshed my memory.
I’m an optimist, but les jeux sont faits.
you guys still rather have granderson over kennedy?
Kinda makes me wish we tried harder to win in those 3 close ones…ugh
Girardi is absolutely atrocious as a manager!!! He’s cookie cutter w/o imagination. Wave the fuck’n white flag 3 games in a row… Joe G.
Proctor the castoff for 2 innings against Balt. Laffey last night in the bottom of the ninth. Noesi tonight in the 7th down 1 fuck’n run.
Geeez I want to smash some things…. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Waaaaaaah, I blame the manager for EVERYTHING Waaaaaaaah
Stop that.
I’m sorry but this guy is blaming Girardi for stupid stuff.
BLAME THE PLAYERS, NOT THE MANAGER!
I agree that this is not Girardi’s fault in any way, but if you say stuff like that, you just look really immature.
Dude is like 12 years old or something.
youre so immature !
Yankees to Greg: seriously dude, your a tool.
Yankees to fans: Don’t worry tonight we will be hitting home runs and covering all bases with the hottest girls in L.A. thanks for your concern
seriously bro, read #10
http://riveraveblues.com/about.....uidelines/
running the good relievers into the ground is a much better option
Make a fuck’n effort to win the game…vs …put in an over matched rookie; cross your fingers and whisper prayers to Rothchild.
and by make an effort to win you mean use overworked relievers on days that they are unavailable because they need rest
yes, turn the whole bullpen into Scott Proctor – that will end well
A guy throws 20 pitches per night… 2 nights in a row and needs rest?? Really…that’s all bullshit. That’s the messages that’s been sold and now is believed.
Nolan Ryan’s got his guys looking to go 9 innings because that’s how he was wired and pitched until he was like 104 yo
did you see what Torre did to Quantrill, Proctor, Sturze, etc. by following that mentality
The Yankees are going to make the playoffs easily. It makes a lot more sense to keep everyone as healthy as possible. It’s not just the 2 nights in a row, it’s the workload over the entire season.
Yeah, I didn’t like the Laffey move either, but I had no problem with Noesi coming into this one. He just stank up the joint.
yep. Not a bad move…shitty outcome
2 years running Girardi down the stretch is managing defensively..trying not to loss vs going all out to win.
Geez when did these bullpen dudes turn into china dolls and coddled, fragile porcelin.
Back in the day…Gossage would come in in the 7th and pitch through the 9th for a win or a save. The guy was mean, nasty and always wanted the ball.
Now they have and we as fans have been sold a pill of shit…namely pitch count and one inning specialists.
The game has changed dude. Lineups are loaded top to bottom (no easy out with a pitcher hitting in the A.L.), every pitch thrown today is a 100% effort. Back in Gossage’s day, Shortstops, 2nd Baseman and Catchers were all .240 hitters. The game changes.
I’m not buy that dude…i’d put the ’78 Yankees up against this Yankee team any day. Those guys knew how to win. Period.
Guidry vs CC…my $’s on Guidry…hands down…and I’m a life long Yankees fan.
I’m not saying one team is better or worse than the other, just that the game has changed. I don’t think Gossage would be able to go 3 innings against today’s lineups, but I think he would be a dominant closer in today’s game (the way Mo is.) I don’t think Guidry would throw the number of CG’s or shutouts or a sub 2 ERA in today’s game, but he would be a top starter like CC.
Kontos FTW
Turn off this shit and turn on the Michigan game.
Crazy finish.
Notre Dame plays defense like the Yankees are hitting right now…
The only way Haren gives up any runs will be out of pure boredom
But Buster Olney told me on Twitter today that pitchers “pitch to the score!”
hahahaha
Is it bad to be kinda glad to see Posada behind the plate again?
I, for one was ecstatic
If the Angels hit that, it would have been a triple.
Okay, offense, let’s start small: how about not going down 1-2-3?
At this stage, gimme some Kontos or Betances, please? Even friggin Brackman
Silly Montero, only the Angels can turn weak ground balls into base hits.
Kontos has decent numbers in the minors. So why is Proctor and Laffey ahead of him in the depth chart and pitch in close games…while he pitches in a game that is pretty much over
Because Proctor and Laffey have veteran presents.
I wonder what Girardi got in those presents.
A new binder!
/unfunnybinderjoke’d
Experience > Talent. That’s just management’s philosophy. Look how long Montero was held down in favor of a 40 year old has been.
You just saw Kontos throw his first major league pitch. Proctor’s a veteran who has been through his fair share of tight situations as a Yankee. Laffey is a lefty. Even if there was a depth chart involved with September callups, yes, it would entirely justifiable to have guys with actual experience pitch before the gaggle of rookie call-ups, no matter how much DOTF you may read.
Not when you know what the guys with experience are, know they have no room to improve, and know they will have no impact on the future of your organization. There’s no collateral upside to losing with Proctor, Laffey, etc. There is potential collateral upside to losing with Kontos, Betances, Banuelos, Brackman, Warren, Phelps, etc.
there’s also a slightly higher likelihood of winning the game the pitched in with experience rather than the rookie
Losing with a rookie pitching an inning in a tie game has absolutely no effect on that pitcher’s upside
It doesn’t have an affecton their upside. It allows the organization to see the pitcher against (mostly) actual major leaguers, instead of constantly wondering what they might actually be able to do, leading to things like Brian freaking Gordon getting starts.
And a 25 year old never will be.
Did you just see that home run, Hester?
because Kontos has never pitched in MLB, and would probably very nervous coming into a tie game on the road. It would make sense to see what he can do at this level before putting him into a very difficult situation. Proctor also had good numbers in the minor leagues- that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be good in the majors
Two fucking hits.
All I ask is no GIDP, Jorge.
Holy crap, was that two hits in a row?
What was the asking package for Haren? Was it Joba + Nova + Romine? Just curious thats all.
A rare sight….the Yanks get two hits in an hour!
BTW…Raul Valdez? Girardi…really?
GTFO Nunez…wow
offense is comatose
So…much…fail….
I am so tired of Nunez right now
Shitty luck is shitty.
They should bench him for that.
FU Nunez.
The reason I am fake crying is because Girardi has become the spawn of Satan on here, and I dont think that’s fair to him or the Yankees.
I’m liking Greg 2.0 a lot more here.
Waaaaaawwwww stop picking on Girardi!
He’s the bestestest manager in the world and a brilliant tactician!
Only pick on him when he does something for absolutely no reason. All of these changes he’s made he has had a reason.
2000 yankees…..sucked down the stretch….11-5 in the post season…World Series winners.
There’s plenty more recent examples than that. Never let the truth get in the way of game thread complaints, though.
those kind of plays…where the other team makes you look like a bitch should fire up something inside of you…just as a competitor. STAND UP YANKS!
So much awful.
Everyone should vote Jorge Posada as the player of the game just to troll YES.
I can’t even blame Nunez for that one.
Angel bloop and bleeders = hit
Yankee rocket = Double play
That is some great hustle Nunez…. What a display of great baseball by the Yankees…. seriously, great baseball Yanks.
Dropping the ball is clever
Yeah Eduardo Nunez playing RF to get some offense = money Girardi.
It’s not like his .664OPS against righties should have been a clue.
Dickerson wasn’t playing again why? The poor defense? Or the terrible idea of starting a let hitter against the righty Haren?
Girardi needs to stop with this damn postseason roster experimentation (which I think is also the Laffey stupidity the last few days)
And yes they still lose these games…. but Girardi needs to stop with this pretend shit and just tell people he’s messing around with lineups to figure stuff out for the postseason.
….which is what managers preparing for the postseason do every year.
You do realize it would take MUCH more than this to miss the playoffs, right?
Stop making the Girardi the spawn of Satan! BLAME THE PLAYERS
Blame both?
You seem to think it’s all or nothing.
Stop creating strawman to defend Girardi… criticizing a move is not making him out to be the spawn of Satan.
but Girardi needs to stop with this pretend shit and just tell people he’s messing around with lineups to figure stuff out for the postseason.
Why does he have to do this?
They better bring Betances in.
GIVE ME BETANCES
So for someone who hasn’t caught since last October, Jorge doesn’t look too bad back there. If it wasn’t for the health reasons I believe he could have been a passable backup.
Well, he will be a backup now that Cervelli is out and Martin will probably need a few days.
6-0…. just complete the quit job and just call the game.
Isn’t there a mercy rule for teams that should be winning but continuously fail?
Inspiring baseball by the Yanks. But if Girardi lets Betances pitch the ninth it will make this whole game worth it.
there won’t be a 9th
Brainfart.
It’s been a long night.
Betances will pitch the 9th for the angles because the yankees traded him for jeff mathis.
/Steinbrenner’d
*angels
you realize there will be no bottom of the ninth, right?
There would be if it were the Red Sox. They’re NEVER out of the game. Ever. Even after the game is already over. They always find a way to grit it out.
They are still playing in Tampa…in their heads.
Robbie wants them to bring Betances in.
Forget Betances. It’s Andy Brackman time.
Oh look, another infield hit.
I love Wade Boggs on the horse and all, but this is lame.
This should be the new magic # picture: http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/200.....ransom.jpg
2000 yankees
I hate that fuck’n smug Mike Scioscia… all the way back to his days a a Dodger.
Yanks kicked their mutherfuck’n asses in ’77 & ’78 and Scioscia was their catcher. Smug prick!
That’s what makes losing these games even harder to take.
That was Steve Yeager.
i think scioscia was the catcher in 81, not 77 & 78. was it yeager in 77 & 78? but yes, scioscia is smug.
You’re right, it was Scioscia in ’81 when the Yanks blew a 2-0 WS lead and lost the Series to the Dodgers. Scioscia catching Fernando and they did us in 4 straight.
He may be smug but he owns the Yankees and his teams can play baseball.
His team last appeared in a WS let alone won one almost a decade ago. And Tito Francona can shoot him back that smug smile in spades. Fucking tub of lard loser.
Dear Mike Scioscia, John Madden called, he wants his 5th and 5th chin back
dear Mike Scioscia, John Madden called and he wants his 5th and 6th chin back
At least normally when Gardner wasn’t hitting he was walking a lot, but this is brutal.
He’s still taking pitches and walks, but the Angels aren’t giving up walks to the Yanks.
He walked 3x in one game recently.
We made Haren throw over 100 pitches. Awesome.
Odds of scoring 2+ runs with 1 out in this inning is 6.96% – does not apply to the Yankees.
And now all we need is another Granderson strikeout to put the icing on the cake…..
AND THERE IT IS!
Offense is amazing. What a disappearing act.
Great AB Grandy!!! Way to fight him to 4 pitches…
Well, despite the fact that we are making the postseason, I dont want to live through a crappy September like last year.
I would bet on it happening. This team is lost right now. The old players are dead, young players are pulling “Nunez’” and the pitching staff (for the most part) is very hittable.
Noesi was terrible tonight, but otherwise the pitching has been plenty good of late.
Agreed. Occasional bad pitches or innings, but nothing like the offensive slump.
I actually fell asleep through Noesi and woke up to Kontos. Very glad I missed all that.
and they had a 6 game winning streak end 4 games ago
4 bad games does not a season, or September, make
This is brutal. The offense can’t buy a hit.
oh look, Granderson struck out…. again
It’s been a while since I’ve seen this team look this lifeless. They’ll bounce back. They always do. Everything changes come playoff time, despite what commenters here who seem to have just become fans last week think.
It’d be great to cancel batting practice or something tomorrow. These guys need some damn rest.
I’d like to also thank the Boston Red Sox for sucking ass at about the same time.
Yes. Thank God for Sox sucking.
And time to switch things up for the offense. Try anything to get them going. No BP, adjust the lineup, whatever.
And just the thing for a tired baseball team, a noon-thirty start tomorrow. F-ing fantastic.
Did not know that. *gulp*
They are getting swept regardless of start time. They just don’t have it right now. Maybe playing a bad team like Seattle will help, oh wait never mind, they could be the O’s..
King Felix says hello.
Yeah, I can’t believe they expect these guys to be able to play again in ONLY 15 1/2 hours…
The Yankees offense disappeared! Where’d it go, I don’t know.
I blame Girardi. It seems to be the stylish thing to do nowadays.
I know you are being sarcastic, but come on.
Don Denkinger and Steve Bartman are thinking that Girardi has it easy.
Romine is on his way!
Austin Romine was being held back! Imagine how different things would be if he would have been contributing to the offense mooooooonths ago!
Heh.
The bad news is Cervelli is headed back to NY. I guess that means things aren’t looking too good for him.
This ranks up there in worst losses of the year. Jeff Mathis lol.
Eh, I’m over it already. Last night hurt worse.
I like Francis. I like him a lot. I would be interested in Francis. He’s a clutch hittah with good fundahmentals and he plays the the game da right way.
/Mike Francesa’d
Martin is tough as nails
