Game 150: A-Rod’s back, yet again

By

How can you expect to get a hit ... when you're not even using a real bat? (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)

After missing another six days because of that sprained left thumb, Alex Rodriguez is back in the lineup this afternoon, but in an unfamiliar spot. He’s hitting fifth for the first time in the Joe Girardi Era, and the first time since September 6th of 2006. Here’s the box score for that game. Seven innings of one-hit ball from Randy Johnson, neat. Here’s the lineup…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B – .244/.337/.488
Robinson Cano, 2B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B – .284/.367/.475 … why is he batting fifth and not Tex?
Nick Swisher, RF
Jesus Montero, DH
Brett Gardner, LF
Austin Romine, C

Bartolo Colon, SP

The game is scheduled to start at 1:07pm ET, and you can watch on YES. Enjoy.

  1. Greg says:

    One word. Protection

Do you want Tex protecting Cano in the lineup or ARod protecting Cano?

That’s probably the reason why he hasnt been moved down.

  2. Pat D says:

How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read… if they can’t even fit inside the building?

  3. Well the book says 5 is supposed to be better than 3. But, I don’t think Girardi reads that book.

  4. Cy Pettitte says:

Montero + Romine = must see TV

  5. bullshit girardi says:

    BULLSHIT

  6. Cy Pettitte says:

can someone explain to me why teams that are so far out of the playoff race celebrate walk offs like that? I get it if the game is really important for your season, but these games are kind of meaningless for Toronto.

  7. Tyrion Lannister says:

A $22.5 million 1B should have an OPS higher than .825 and if he doesn’t he should be hitting 6th and not 3rd, 4th, or 5th.

  8. Pat D says:

I wonder if things will be a tad more civil in the game thread today. I read some comments yesterday that seemed to be…let’s say, a bit brusque.

  9. Jerome S. says:

I noticed something while perusing Fangraph’s pitching leaderboards. Virtually of the game’s better pitchers have a differential between their FIP and xFIP. The trend appears to be big enough for me to surmise that xFIP does not take into account some things that pitchers do, in fact, have under their control.

I think they mentioned this when they unveiled SIERA.

  10. lllllllllllll here we go lol

  11. FIPster Doofus says:

So sick of Teixeira right now.

  12. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Tex’d

  13. Tyrion Lannister says:

    That’s why he’s hitting 3rd, folks.

  14. Cy Pettitte says:

    teix is the worst

  15. Greg says:

And there we go. You want that behind Cano?

  16. bonestock94 says:

Hasn’t it been proven that where you bat in the lineup doesn’t really matter??

  17. Guns of the Navarone says:

    I like Stanton.

  18. Chris says:

Um, he hasn’t had consistent at-bats all season… Make him earn the 4th spot, don’t just hand it to him.

  19. FIPster Doofus says:

    Bunting is so cool.

  20. Cy Pettitte says:

    what is Cano doing?

  21. Greg says:

    Bad bunt Cano.

  22. Jerome S. says:

Worst bunt ever? Worst bunt ever.

  23. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Get yer free outs here!!

  24. Tyrion Lannister says:

And that’s better than anything Teix has done in the past 3 weeks. Great reasoning, Girardi. Great players deserve better.

  25. FIPster Doofus says:

    Awesome.

  26. Matt says:

Good sign to see A-Rod turn around 94 mph down and in like that against a RHP. He was having trouble with the fastball before they sat him down.

  27. Jerome S. says:

Imagine that inning without the bunt.

    It’d still be going on.

  28. Great now no one will be on when Montero hits a bomb

  29. Greg says:

Who do you bat 5th if Tex bats 6th?

Swisher? Gardner? Martin? Montero wont happen because he’a a rookie.

  30. Jesse says:

Oh and btw, I vote Lowrie for the poll. But all of the choices will be great hitters, IMO.

  31. Pat D says:

That’s what happens when you don’t use your best reliever.

  32. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I wish Kay would shut up about the walk off losses.

  33. Jesse says:

    Ah c’mon Bart….

  34. Guns of the Navarone says:

It’s almost like throwing the same pitch in the same location four times in a row is a bad idea.

  35. Cy Pettitte says:

    well this sucks.

  36. Tyrion Lannister says:

This is just like Bartolo’s last visit here. He’s gonna get bombed.

  37. Jesse says:

Fuck. This guy was 0-19 and he struck out what, three, four times last night?

  38. CBean says:

According to Sterling, the Yankees “don’t score anymore.” Granted our bats haven’t been great lately but that seems rather a far fetched statement.

  39. Jesse says:

Why the hell is Brett Lawrie batting seventh?

  40. Jesse says:

That sucks, Brett Lawrie is past the 130 AB cutoff for rookie of the year next year. Too bad.

  41. Cy Pettitte says:

that was bad, good this Rasmus stayed at 2nd

  42. Greg says:

They have played sloppy baseball since the Orioles series.

  43. Guns of the Navarone says:

    FUCKING CB BUCKNOR!!!

  44. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I blame this stretch of play on Michael Kay. What business does he have making trips to the West Coast and then to Toronto?

  45. FIPster Doofus says:

What did Molina do to his stance? He looks like Tony Batista up there.

    • pat says:

I heard he turned his head a little bit more towards center field so he could see the guy stealing signs.

    • bonestock94 says:

I don’t what they do in Toronto, but it seems like a lot of batters have career years up there. I think it goes well beyond being a hitters park.

  46. Cy Pettitte says:

why are we getting beat by Jose Molina? please stop it.

  47. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Should of kept

  48. Tyrion Lannister says:

I’ll never figure out why we let that guy go. He was a good backup C and is a .300 hitter. He’s killed us.

  49. Mike Axisa says:

Infield in? It’s the second inning and you’re on turf.

  50. FIPster Doofus says:

lol at the notion of this offense scoring the minimum five runs necessary to win today.

  51. Nuke LaDoosh says:

just got the game on, what’s with Bart?

  52. Widget says:

I guess the Yankees want to choke out the division?

  53. You don’t fuck with the Jesus.

  54. Mike Axisa says:

Montero setting up the inning-ending double play.

  55. thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

7 against the Rays, 3 against the Sox….they keep playing like this…could be an epic collapse

  56. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

John Flaharty talks about every hitter like they are a weak-hitting backup catcher.

  57. Melky says:

    Melky Cabrera: .301|.334|.469|.803 – 18 HR 82 RBI

    just sayin’

    • Melky says:

      Golden Boy: .257|.345|.369|.718 7 HR 36 RBI

    • pat says:

      Melky Cabrera 2010: .255/.317/.354 4 HR :(

    • bonestock94 says:

Gardner has 400 or so less plate appearances than Melky over the course of his career, yet more than double the WAR. I’ll take Gardner every time, Melky is having a career year.

      • Melky says:

Again. What WAR are you using? And until a defensive metric doesn’t suck you can’t really rely on WAR in the Melky/Brett argument considering Gardner has accumulated the vast majority of his WAR on defense.

        Look at their oWar

        Brett: 1.2
        Melky: 4.7

4.7 >>>>>> 1.2. Melky is the better offensive player by far. And in LF at the stadium with Grandy in CF wouldn’t have hurt our defense all that much.

        • Jetrer says:

LF at the stadium is big, so defense in left is important. Gardner is vastly superior baserunner and defender than Melky.
And Melky was pretty much the worst player in baseball last year. I’ll take Gardy over Melky anyday.

        • bonestock94 says:

Gardner is clearly a vastly superior outfielder than Melky. As questionable as completely rejecting UZR is, do it and just by watching games you can see how drastically superior Gardner is to Melky as a defender.

          Now on to offense,

          Melky’s career line: .319 wOBA, 92 wRC+
          Gardner’s career line: .338 wOBA, 107 wRC+

Making your decision based on one season vs the bigger sample size is foolish. I’m no expert but I don’t see any significant changes in his peripherals that indicate he’s made a sustainable improvement as a hitter.

    • That is not sustainable at all for next season. His average is being propped up by a .325 BABIP. Batted ball profile is essentially the same as it was in 2009 (LD% in 2009, 2011: 20.9, 20.3. GB% in 2009, 2011: 49.5, 46.9. FB% in 2009, 2011: 29.6%, 32.8%).

  58. Mister Delaware says:

    Yankees will win this game.

  59. bonestock94 says:

If you follow all the Yankees beat writers, go watch your twitter feed lol

  60. Jesse says:

Two out single for Jeter please.

  61. Tyrion Lannister says:

They’re not even hitting it out of the infield anymore. Where’s the power? The Sox and Tigers could be just 3 GB by tonight.

  62. Nuke LaDoosh says:

I think Kay’s comment proves he never caught a fly ball in his life.

  63. pat says:

Shut em down Bart. Thank you.

  64. Jesse says:

Yankees score four runs this inning

    /youhearditherefirst

  65. Guns of the Navarone says:

    Do something Teix.

  66. Jesse says:

Well, there’s a good start to my prediction….

  67. Bill says:

That’s what I want to see from Tex. Hit the ball away where it’s pitched.

  68. FIPster Doofus says:

    LOL

  69. Guns of the Navarone says:

    That’s goin’ around lately.

  70. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Borjous’d

  71. thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    yes!!!!!!!!!!!!

  72. Jesse says:

    Hahaha Lowen Borjous’d it!

  73. Greg says:

Gotta score more here. This is an opportunity that the Yankees have not had in a long time.

  74. pat says:

Fucking Sterling practically launched into his HR call and the next thing he says is that the ball is dropped. He is fucking TERRIBLE.

  75. thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    omfg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. Guns of the Navarone says:

What the sweet fuck is this team doing!?!?

  77. FIPster Doofus says:

    You’ve gotta be fucking kidding.

  78. Tyrion Lannister says:

Those idiots. Just stupid. And this team is going to win in October?

  79. 87yiuhkjd c,ddslnwijec’ piwthls/gnkdvc;l’dei[2cm4′qp

  80. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Wow. That’s all I have to say about that.

  81. bonestock94 says:

    Head explode

  82. Jetrer says:

What the fuck is Cano fucking doing today? Fucking head up his ass.

  83. CBean says:

    what the fucking fuck

  84. Kevin G. says:

    Someone check Cano’s brain

  85. Greg says:

    My goodness.

That is failure on the ultimate level.

  86. Nuke LaDoosh says:

OK, Cano made 3 “mental” mistakes last night, and now this?

  87. Jesse says:

    Thanks a lot Cano…..

  88. thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

even when they do the things right to score the runs…they still fuck it up

  89. Mike Axisa says:

Someone wake this team the fuck up.

  90. Bill says:

If the Yankees lose today they can look at that inning as the main reason. SMH

  91. Justin says:

I think Cano is saving his brain for the playoffs. …wow

  92. Jesse says:

At first I thought Teixeira fucked up.

  93. Tyrion Lannister says:

Is Jorge the new baserunning coach?

  94. rek4gehrig says:

    r u friggin kidding me?

  95. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Once again, my theory about Michael Kay being a jinx is spot on. He said that would get down and score runs, and look what happened.

  96. CUYanks says:

Teixeira’s gotta keep running on that play regardless of Cano. It’s not a force so he has a chance to score if he beats the throw at 2nd.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

Cano passed Teix on the bases though

    • Jetrer says:

Cano passed him, the third out was already recorded

    • Matt says:

Cano passed Teixeira on the bases. That is not his fault one bit.

      • CUYanks says:

Yes, he passed Teixeira when Teixeira was heading back to the base, when he should have been only going in 1 direction, to home. To be fair, I’d be confused by Cano’s baserunning too.

        • Jetrer says:

Couldn’t quite tell on the replay, but I think Tex left a little early to try to avoid being passed, so he had to go back to tag after the catch

        • The Humungus says:

Except then Teixeira would have been out. He went back to the bag to TAG when it became apparent the ball would be caught. He couldn’t go home.

          • CUYanks says:

He went back to the bag to tag twice. I agree with Jetrer that he probably left a little early to avoid being passed, so I’ll give him that. He generally shouldn’t be going halfway on a ball than deep though.

        • Mike Axisa says:

Tex was supposed to stay at third. He scores on that ball whether it’s a hit or an out. Staying at third is the right play.

          • CUYanks says:

Exactly. The only extenuating circumstance is that he left the bag early to avoid being passed. (Being passed would have looked very stupid if the ball hit the gap, for example). Bizarre situation.

  97. Rainbow Connection says:

Cano is SOOO much better than PEdrOia!11!1!!!!!

  98. rek4gehrig says:

Why does everyone keep talking about the playoffs? R we in yet? They keep on with these boneheaded moves and they will be no playoffs

  99. Tyrion Lannister says:

And now Bartolo’s gonna give it back against a club that knows how to run the bases, move runners over, and get timely hits.

  100. pat says:

Shutdown innings after we score a run; we don’t has them.

  101. blazing fastball says:

    The Keystone bombers

  102. Greg says:

    Absolutely disgraceful.

If Girardi lets these silly mistakes continue then I would fire him. Immediately.

  103. Chen Meng Wang says:

Imagine Billy Martin was the manager right now. Do you think he’d pull Cano from the game?

  104. blazing fastball says:

Martin would have pulled him by the ear

  105. Rainbow Connection says:

    Hey Everybody,
Let’s cut these guys some slack. They have a TOUGH job.
They work 6 months a year. I know, I know. How do they do it?
They also, get this, work 3 hours a day, which consists mostly of standing around on a field or sitting on a bench. They get paid millions to do this.
Also, they don’t have to work if it rains. Tough job!
I don’t know how they can stand doing this ‘work’.
Let’s all salute them and their ‘hard work/being born with a gift to hit or throw a ball’.
    Poor guys/spoiled millionaires.

  106. Jetrer says:

    pathetic, just fucking pathetic

  107. Cy Pettitte says:

get beat by Mccoy and Molina? my god.

  108. Tyrion Lannister says:

And that’ll be the ballgame. Good outing, Bartolo. Good performance, offense. Gotta keep hoping Boston loses.

    • Mr. Sparkle says:

Boston? How about they simply lock up a playoff spot. Seven left vs. the Rays remember. It would be nice to render most of those meaningless. Especially with a seven game stretch heading in where the Yankees arguably COULD have won seven in a row and locked up a slot. As it stands now, they’re 2-2 in that span. I hope we’re not looking back at these games a week from now and seeing blown opportunities.

  109. thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

More shitty hitters killing the yanks.

  110. The Humungus says:

Cashman needs to order a “Code Red”.

  111. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Mike McCoy .304/.333/.435 in 23 AB against the Yankees this year.

  112. CBean says:

I’m assuming we’ll see Bettances today?

  113. Guns of the Navarone says:

I really do blame this all on Buck Showalter.

  114. Widget says:

Colon sucks pretty bad today. Ouch. I’d blame the sign stealing, but today he just sucks. Another shitty hit gets a big hit.

  115. TSJC Troll Doppelganger says:

I’m convinced the Yanks scouting department is paid minimum wage.

  116. blazing fastball says:

Yeah, I guess it’s too much to ask them to remember how many outs there are. The brain can only be taxed so far!

  117. Bill says:

The Yankees are so incredibly hard to watch right now.

  118. ut says:

As it stands now, their pitching rotation does not match well in a short series.

  119. Cy Pettitte says:

    Montero just got butt fucked

  120. Guns of the Navarone says:

It’s sickening to hear ex players talk about how umpires WILL and DO call a strikezone based on the hitter’s reputation.

  121. ArchStanton says:

Hard to believe it, but I’m missing Frisco. He seemed to be hitting pretty well at the time.

  122. Kramerica Industries says:

Yeah, lets keep saying this nothing like last September. When this team got ass-canned regularly from the second week on-ward.

In all facets of the game, this team is fricken brutal right now. And playing the Rays and Red Sox is not going to help that.

  123. pat says:

It’s time we consider the fact that Montero is a bust. Considering he doesn’t actually play the field he only works maybe 20 minutes a day while he’s at the plate. He only has a ground ball and a strikeout today. That’s not going to cut it.

  124. ArchStanton says:

The one difference is last year it seemed like Girardi purposely shut the team down and was using guys like Mitre and Gaudin in big spots to win games. That really hasn’t been the case this time. They just flat out suck.

  125. Widget says:

Nice, Girardi is waiving the white flag. So glad he doesn’t burnout any of the young pitchers and instead goes to the vets.

  126. Kramerica Industries says:

And the Girardi narratives are just friggen tired.

Blame Joe for screwing the pooch with Sabathia and the rotation lately. It’s not Joe’s fault at all that this offense couldn’t hit a beach ball right now.

  127. ut says:

    Yankee rotation post all-star:

    ERA Whip
    Sabathia 3.52 1.34
    Burnett 7.32 1.81
    Colon 4.06 1.35
    Garcia 4.91 1.48
    hughes 4.76 1.34

  128. Karl Krawfid says:

Joe G should have rested EVERYONE in Baltimore.

    The make up game.

  129. Cy Pettitte says:

    Romine can’t catch Betances here?

    • ArchStanton says:

Is it really that hard for a catcher to catch someone he’s never caught before? I assume it happens multiple times each week in the majors, but Girardi acts like it’s an impossible mission. I could see if it was knuckle-baller or even Burnett with his wildness, but other than that….

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

The Binder says never put in a rookie pitcher to make their debut unless it’s a tie game and you mismanaged your bullpen into making it your only move.

  130. Jesse says:

    Raul Valdes? Who’s he????

    /Kidding

  131. Zach says:

At the rate we’re going, we’ll be lucky to make it to the post season.

    • Tyrion Lannister says:

We’ll still back in. The Rays can get at best within 6 of us before we play them for seven games. They’d have to go 6-1 against us to have a shot. And that’s if they win the last two vs Boston. Not likely.

  132. Mike Axisa says:

Tex with two doubles up the middle? What is this madness?

  133. Guns of the Navarone says:

Grandy getting on base and Teix going THE OTHER WAY! Good things to take from this disaster called a ballgame.

  134. Bill says:

One positive I can draw from this game is the opposite field hitting of Teixeira

  135. Cy Pettitte says:

    stop hitting Robbie. christ.

  136. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    ARod 3 run bomb

  137. Cy Pettitte says:

    ARod go BOOM!

  138. Karl Krawfid says:

    I missed you A-Rod!

  139. FIPster Doofus says:

    A-Rod! Suddenly it’s a game.

  140. Tyrion Lannister says:

Alex just killed any sort of rally we had going.

  141. Guns of the Navarone says:

    IT’S ALLLIIIIIIIIIIVEEEE!!!!

  142. jay h says:

that is why he’s batting fifth

  143. Bill says:

    A-BOMB !!!

  144. James A says:

And Raul Valdes just sat down
Way to be ready for the pitch he knew was coming, I forget sometimes how fucking good A-Rod is at baseball

  145. Chen Meng Wang says:

    OUR OFFENZE IZ TEH SUKZORZE!!!1111!!!!!!!!!!

  146. Zooboy says:

Swinging at the first pitch? What an idiot!

  147. jay h says:

    lol swish

  148. pat says:

    Laffey warming? Lol.

  149. pat says:

Oh man. 2 pitches two outs? That’s not good.

  150. Rainbow Connection says:

Why is Swisher playing if he’s still in so much pain? He’s shaking his arm around in pain after every swing and throw and let go of this bat.
Don’t they have a bunch of people to play RF?

  151. FIPster Doofus says:

    Steal second.

  152. Melky's Mother says:

When in doubt, and when your argument falls short, merely call it a “career year.”

  153. Melky's Mother says:

    And unsustainable luck

  154. Mickey Scheister says:

Romine looks over matched. A-Rod looks great and Montero looks slims.

  155. ArchStanton says:

I’d rather see Valdes than Laffey. I assume Valdes stinks, but we KNOW Laffey does.

  156. dalelama says:

I don’t know about you guys but despite leading the Al East right now I don’t see this team going any further than last year’s squad. The listless September reminds me of last year’s limp finish. It just seems like last year with our offense wearing down and stuck with so so starting pitching. I guess miracles can happen but I just ain’t feeling it for this squad as far as winning it all.

    • ArchStanton says:

If I had my choice, I’d take the 2009 finish, where they kicked ass and took names all the way to the title. But realistically, there doesn’t seem to be any correlation between September and October. The 2000 Yanks for example, and if you want to give them a pass due to being a veteran playoff team, then look at the 2006 Tigers, who limped to the finish yet went on to the Series.

    • CMP says:

There gonna end up not having enough starting pitching just like last year. The rotation got by with smoke and mirrors in the regular season but that seems to be coming to an end.

  157. pat says:

Anytime you get a scoreless inning from Aaron Laffey you MUST win the game.

  158. Mike Axisa says:

I’m going to get stuck watching Mets-Braves instead of Rays-Red Sox because of FOX, aren’t I?

  159. Karl Krawfid says:

    Grandy!!!!!!

  160. Mike Axisa says:

    What a freaking at-bat.

  161. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Grandy Man!!!

  162. Cy Pettitte says:

    GRANDYMAN! what an AB, wow.

  163. RCA says:

    CURTIS!!!!!

  164. Brent says:

    Grandy internetheart

  165. Jetrer says:

hell yeah curtis, way to break out of the slump

  166. the truth says:

    in awe

  167. Esteban says:

Oh the Grandyman can! Nice, number 40

  168. jay h says:

remember when the yankees weren’t going to make the playoffs two innings ago?

  169. Chen Meng Wang says:

    So are we done bashing?

  170. pat says:

    So lifeless.

  171. Zooboy says:

    Epic at bat. NICE!!!!

  172. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I wonder where that guy that was saying KKKKKurtis Granderson is now.

  173. BK2ATL says:

Wow, what an at-bat by Curtis culminating with a HR to take the lead!!!

  174. Tyrion Lannister says:

I think Curtis just locked up the MVP over Bautista with that HR.

  175. the truth says:

No Molina…the Jays are now powerless

  176. Guns of the Navarone says:

Noesi to the rotation next season.

  177. pat says:

Don’t lose him Hec. You got this bum.

  178. Cy Pettitte says:

Add some more runs, let Hector close it out.

  179. Mike Axisa says:

Hopefully they score another run or five so Noesi can throw the eighth as well. Soriano and Robertson need the rest.

  180. BK2ATL says:

    Nice job by Noesi!!!

  181. pat says:

    Montero gonna PWN Drabek.

  182. Chen Meng Wang says:

I thought Drabek was supposed to be a legit prospect? Isn’t that what landed Philly Halladay?

  183. Mike Axisa says:

Soriano vs. Bautista will not end well. It didn’t a few weeks ago.

  184. Karl Krawfid says:

So does this end up 7-7 8-7 or still 7-6 after Soriano pitches?

  185. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Uh-oh, Soriano. *ducks*

  186. swishers fauxhawk says:

Two consecutive strikeouts for Soriano? Time to pull out the shot glasses.

  187. Bill says:

    Soriano the Spit Baller lol

  188. Karl Krawfid says:

    F’in nasty

  189. Jetrer says:

    MFIKY
    MFIKY
    and MFIKY

  190. swishers fauxhawk says:

Struck out the side? I’m chugging the bottle.

  191. Tyrion Lannister says:

Soriano’s back and now it’s time to get Mo his 601st so he can get the 602nd at home.

  192. BK2ATL says:

Soriano seems to have turned it on at the right time this season. 3 batters (Bautista, Lind, Cooper), 3Ks.

    Gotta love it.

  193. Nice says:

Fuck New York and the fucking Yankees.

I hope C.C. breaks his fucking arm, that fat fuck.

    That is all,

    Blow Me New York.

  194. Gonzo says:

Proctor to Laffey to Noesi to Soriano to Mo.

Just like they drew it up pregame!

  195. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

They pinch hit Chavez for Romine. Jorge will catch!!

    nothappening’d

  196. Tyrion Lannister says:

Jorge damn well better be catching Mo’s 602nd.

  197. ArchStanton says:

    Will Posada catch the 9th?

  198. ArchStanton says:

I agree with Kyle Drabek in the bullpen.

Sincerely, author of the Joba Rules

  199. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Wow, this ump must really want to go home.

If Mo gets that low and away strike like Drabek is getting it, then Toronto might as well not even bother coming out for the 9th.

  200. Bill says:

    Umpires shouldn’t have ego’s.

  201. pat says:

Mo to Po would be nice, but in a 1 run game I want that catcher that can actually throw someone out.

  202. swishers fauxhawk says:

Grandy with a gem of a game.

  203. Karl Krawfid says:

Shut the hell up Michael Kay

  204. Nuke LaDoosh says:

    so excited

  205. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

How could Mo be having an “outstanding season” Michael?? He has a losing record!!!!1!11!!

  206. Cy Pettitte says:

    Bucknor’d

  207. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Not a strike, but CB Bucknor just really wanted to do his stupid fist pump.

    Whatever, I’ll take it.

  208. swishers fauxhawk says:

Rofl, that was in the other freaking batter’s box.

  209. Mike Axisa says:

    Holy shit, shut up Kay.

    • Nuke LaDoosh says:

while the explanation of how a Save is recorded was beyond annoying, sometimes we forget he needs to broadcast to the “least common denominator.” guessing you were pretty bored in H.S. algebra class too.

  210. Cy Pettitte says:

    Mo! `#601 in the books!

  211. Karl Krawfid says:

    Mo acts like its nothing.

    Boss!

  212. Erica says:

601!!!! I am going to cry. That’s amazing. Congratulations, Mo!

  213. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Jose Valverde and Jonathan Papelbon celebrate one save more than Mo has celebrated all 601 combined.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile says:

God, could you even imagine how douchey Papeblown would be if he set a record like this?

      • Foghorn Leghorn says:

Papelbon has been surprisingly subdued this year. I think he’s focused on getting a big pay day this offseason. I think he’s going to leave…some team is going to pay him a lot of money and I can’t see the Sox doing it.

Silly move if you ask me. I abhor Papeldoutche but he’s pretty darn good. He ain’t no Daniel Bard though!

        • Bill says:

He wasn’t subdued at all last night. He celebrated like he got the last out of the World Series. I love when the Yankees beat the likes of him and Valverde. I hope the Yankees get a walkoff if they face either guy in playoffs.

  214. Tyrion Lannister says:

Mariano River and Trevor Hoffman stand alone at the top of the all time saves record. And soon, Mariano will be by himself in the record books. Greatest closer of all time.

  215. Bill says:

This was a great team win.

  216. Chad Gaudin the Friendly Ghost says:

I don’t understand why Mo doesn’t do more screaming, dancing, and jiggling of his fat ass for every one of his 601 saves like I’ve done 238 times.

    /Valverde’d

  217. Bronx Byte says:

A nice win plus Mariano tied the saves record. One game closer to wiping out the magic number.

  218. MikeD says:

    Nice win. Congrats, Mo.

It’s always fun reading the comments on a come-back win. All the moaning and doom-and-gloom when the Yankees are behind.

Speaking of which, seemed like Greg just disappeared soon as Grandy was having a big game and the Yankees made a come back.

    • Greg says:

I was watching college football, thoughI did look in at times.

Great win for the Yankees, congrats to Mo and lets keep it going

  219. BK2ATL says:

Nice come-from-behind win for the Yanks. Granderson really knows how to break out of a slump.

Congrats to Mariano for being #1 (tied only for today). #602 tomorrow??? He’s the best that ever did it, but we already knew that.

1st ballot HOFer. The definition of a dominant pitcher.
