Now that we’re so late in the season and the Yankees have a playoff spot all but wrapped up, it’s time to start resting the regulars. Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira get the afternoon off while Robinson Cano gets off the turf and spends the day as DH. Given their recent workloads, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rafael Soriano and David Robertson were on today’s no pitch list. Expect more of this in the coming days. Here’s the lineup….

Ramiro Pena is the worst Yankee player since Cody Ransom. He should be released. Dickerson has earned the start today. He’s been able to come off the bench and add value in many ways.
What would be gained by releasing him?
Release Pena,bring up Russo,move Nunez to his true position (SS) and Russo spells Cano. At least Russo can hit better than .067
He’s also just a much better player than Ramiro Pena.
Solid glove, no bat guy. Even though minimal, those guys have value in a September expanded roster MLB team. Plus they’re paying him next to nothing. What’s the point in releasing him?

Playing LF and CF at the same time is nothing new for Gardner. We’ve seen him make plenty of fantastic catches in Granderson territory.

About that “b-lineup.” I’m glad I didn’t take my grandsons to the game today. Not just because they can’t STAND to see the Yankees lose to the Jays, but because they wouldn’t have seen Jeter, Tex, and Granderson. I’m coming to think Sunday isn’t the day to see the Yanks in Toronto. Last time there was no Jeter, no Teixeira and (the dl) no Arod.
It gets tricky this time of year. Sunday games are almost always afternoon games, meaning they’re usually day games after night games, and get-away days, which adds up to a formula that leads to lots of rest for the regulars.
I was going to say you might want to look for a Sunday game when the Yankees have the next day off, increasing the odds the regulars will play. Then I realized that was the case today, but then they had to add in unscheduled make-up game for tomorrow.

Every game means something, but it isn’t the end of the world if they lose today.
It is inexcusable to lose this game with Pena getting one of the more crucial at bats with a runner on in the 8th inning.
You don’t even have to use a regular to pinch hit there. Jones? Montero? Posada? Even Golson is better than Pena.
Slide Nunez to short and put Laird at 2B if you have to. At least give yourself one chance at this game. If you somehow come back and win it, that makes your life a lot easier later, at the cost of only one pinch hit at bat and no time in the field.
The cost is almost nothing, and the reward is potentially high. How can you not even try?

It was speculated that it was a condition of the trade, but that never solidified. Its possible the Phillies don’t pickup his option, but they still don’t have enough money to pay both guys.
I haven’t read anything about the option. It’s for $16 million. I don’t know if Oswalt would have agreed to walk away from that.
I have read rumors he might only want to play one or two more seasons, which gets me to wondering. If the Phillies don’t pick it up and he’s a free agent, should the Yankees look at him if he could be had for two years?

It’s time for the Yankees to start playing at full strength or close to it for the home stretch until the division is clinched. Then you can rest your guys. Enough of this white flag-giving up games bullshit. Girardi can’t keep banking on the Red Sox continuing to suck at this pace, they will probably wake up a little bit against the Orioles. At the same time, the Rays will be playing for their playoff lives, and if Girardi’s gonna rest his guys in those games, he’s creating an unnecessary threat to the Yanks winning the division or even making the postseason. Let’s hope he learned his lesson from last year that playing like shit going into the playoffs will not end well for this team.

Another thing is that while the Red Sox have sucked, the Yankees have been almost as bad during that same stretch, and have gained very little ground on them. Don’t forget, the Yankees have 3 games left with Boston. You can’t rule out the possibility that the Sox would sweep – they’ve won all 6 games at Yankee Stadium this year. And while i don’t think this will happen, it’s time for Girardi to stop fucking around.
