Game 151: Rest

Ramiro's back in action today. (AP Photo/John Froschauer)

Now that we’re so late in the season and the Yankees have a playoff spot all but wrapped up, it’s time to start resting the regulars. Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira get the afternoon off while Robinson Cano gets off the turf and spends the day as DH. Given their recent workloads, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rafael Soriano and David Robertson were on today’s no pitch list. Expect more of this in the coming days. Here’s the lineup….

Brett Gardner, CF
Eduardo Nunez, 2B
Robinson Cano, DH
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eric Chavez, 1B
Russell Martin, C
Chris Dickerson, LF
Ramiro Pena, SS

Freddy Garcia, SP

The game starts at 1:07pmET and can be seen on YES. If you’re interested, the Rays and Red Sox will be playing at 1:35pm ET, and that game will be on TBS. Enjoy.

  1. Pat D says:

OMG!! What the hell?!? Girardi is not trying to win these friggin’ games!!!!!

  2. Zanath says:

Couldn’t they have at least found a way to not have Ramiro Pena in the lineup?

  3. Favrest says:

Ramiro Pena is the worst Yankee player since Cody Ransom. He should be released. Dickerson has earned the start today. He’s been able to come off the bench and add value in many ways.

  4. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I’m not going to enjoy it. Stop telling me what to do, Axisa.

  5. Rey22 says:

Girardi with the big guns against the Jays today.

    Go Rays.

  6. Bronx Byte says:

The Rays will help the Yankees reduce the magic number by another game today.

  7. Sarah says:

Nitpicking, but…Gardner is playing CF today.

  8. Tyrion Lannister says:

Looks like it’s a good day to watch the NFL.

  9. Bill says:

Garcia’s gonna have to pitch a LOT better than he has lately if the Yankees are gonna win today with this lineup …

  10. Jesse says:

To be honest, I’ll be watching this game more than my Colts. Good God, are they gonna be terrible this year.

  11. Jesse says:

Bold Prediction: Yankees score AT LEAST 8 runs in this one.

  12. Naved says:

I want to see the Killer B’s pitch!

  13. Pat D says:

    Why oh why Robbie?

  14. Bill says:

Cano doesn’t even run hard when he’s trying to steal a base.

  15. Wooderson says:

is it just me or is the blue jays lineup horribly constructed?

  16. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I hope Kay doesn’t really think that Girardi used Pena because he’d 4-7 against Morrow.

  17. Sheepmeister says:

Garcia must be Bautista’s kryptonite since all he throws are off speed pitches.

  18. bonestock94 says:

    HR/FB regression

  19. Jetrer says:

somewhat interesting article about Granderson’s RBI success, if anyone is interested

  20. Bill says:

    Johnson was clearly out.

  21. Karl Krawfid says:

    Jerry Meals is dumb.

Why must they have all the idiot umps in one group?

  22. Nuke LaDoosh says:

How on earth is JLo and Fiat a good fit for sponsorship? I’m saying thumbs down on the commercial although nice watching her move.

  23. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

haha I love watching Salty try to catch Wakefield.

  24. Jetrer says:

    nice catch

  25. Cy Pettitte says:

Johnny puts the Rays on the board 1-0.

  26. ArchStanton says:

Cano would’ve had that Pedroia :)

  27. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Matt Joyce with a RBI single that would have been handled by every 2nd basemen thats not 5′ 7″

  28. Jimmy says:

Cano with a HR shot too lazy to leave the park.

  29. Karl Krawfid says:

    That was a slider John.

  30. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

3-0 Rays on a Desmond Jennings hit!

  31. Karl Krawfid says:

    This Fenway meltdown is amazing.

    Nothing like 2006 though.

  32. CBean says:

I guess i’m glad I picked Lind in pick six today

  33. Cy Pettitte says:

    LOL Freddy.

  34. Grandy says:

Throw him one up or something.

  35. Karl Krawfid says:

    Fuck the Jays man.

    Cheatin’ ass team.

    • The Lazzeri Scooter says:

why does the YES crew not bring up that confirmed cheating incident? Why doesn’t Kay complain and mention the Jays dirty tricks?

Nope, we’re left with pointless Kay-Flattery banter- sigh.

  36. Jimmy says:

Adam Lind vs. Garcia today 2 for 2, 1.000/1.000/4.000.

    Granted SSS.

  37. TomH says:

Freddy shaky again. Colon shaky again yesterday. I dunno about this rotation for the post-season.

  38. Monteroisdinero says:

Nunez/Pena at 2B/SS. better than the other way around? With Garcia pitching? I guess the binder knows.

  39. Paul T says:

Anyone see asshole lupica’s column today? Says bucholz injury more hurtful to sox than any Yankees injury…said they would be EASILY in first if he didn’t get hurt

    • Karl Krawfid says:

      But guess what.

      He did.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

so he’s saying that if things were different they wouldn’t be the same?

      startling revelation

    • The Lazzeri Scooter says:

      why do you care?

Everyone who knows anything about sports knows that individual is bigoted, biased dirtbag. Every competent sportsfan knows this fact.

So, why bring up the obvious rantings of this idiot? Giving this fool way too much credit. Just ignore this pathetic troll & boycott the Daily News until they fire him.

My life has been much more pleasent and peaceful ever since I did. You should try it… its not like you need cheap tabloids for sports info anymore, right?

  40. ArchStanton says:

I would’ve started Jorge at second.

  41. Bill says:

Garcia’s gonna have to keep the score right here, because Morrow is mowing the Yankees down.

  42. Urban says:

Brandon Morrow, the new AJ Burnett that the Yankees will overpay for one day because of how he pitches against the Yankees?

Joking aside, I think Morrow will have a good year in 2012. He’s been a bit unlucky this year…not including when he pitches against the Yankes.

  43. Monteroisdinero says:

He can be there for the last inning of the regular season.

  44. ArchStanton says:

Listening to the TBS broadcast and the announcer asked Smoltz if he had ever been on the same staff as knuckle-baller as Wakefield pitches. Smoltz says no- wonder if he’ll be as successful keeping that Sox stint off of his possible HOF plaque?

  45. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

oh shit, I hope Price is ok.

  46. Karl Krawfid says:

Can I please see Betances or Brackman?

  47. Cy Pettitte says:

ugh Price just took a line drive to the chest. not good.

  48. Urban says:

It’s Halladay or Lee. I really can’t pick between them right now.

  49. Tyrion Lannister says:

Freddy’s probably out of the postseason rotation with another good Hughes outing. Rays will put us one number closer to the division.

    • Bill says:

I doubt that. I don’t think Girardi would put Garcia in the pen.

    • TomH says:

Well, I call that a SHAKY performance by Freddy making me think you’re right that he weakened himself for a playoff spot. 4.2 innings, lousy strike/ball ratio. I would be much happier though if that other “good Hughes outing” you mention came against a good team.

  50. Karl Krawfid says:

    Fuck you Tony Larussa.

It’s to damn early to be making all these changes.

  51. Karl Krawfid says:

You don’t make pitches changes like this when you start a shitty lineup like you did Joe.

  52. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Time for Ayala to give up a bases clearing double and have his ERA stay nice and low!

  53. Urban says:

Gotta hold it here, Luis. 3-0 normally not a major issue, unless facing a pitcher on his game like Morrow, and the Yankees B-lineup today.

    • TomH says:

About that “b-lineup.” I’m glad I didn’t take my grandsons to the game today. Not just because they can’t STAND to see the Yankees lose to the Jays, but because they wouldn’t have seen Jeter, Tex, and Granderson. I’m coming to think Sunday isn’t the day to see the Yanks in Toronto. Last time there was no Jeter, no Teixeira and (the dl) no Arod.

      • Urban says:

It gets tricky this time of year. Sunday games are almost always afternoon games, meaning they’re usually day games after night games, and get-away days, which adds up to a formula that leads to lots of rest for the regulars.

I was going to say you might want to look for a Sunday game when the Yankees have the next day off, increasing the odds the regulars will play. Then I realized that was the case today, but then they had to add in unscheduled make-up game for tomorrow.

  54. Monteroisdinero says:

Zobrist batting righty against Wake. As does Tex.

  55. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

lol another passed ball for Salty.

  56. ArchStanton says:

Look at the ace part of our bullpen locking it down :)

  57. Cy Pettitte says:

4-0 Rays Sean Rodriguez sac fly

  58. Monteroisdinero says:

Hard to believe Salty is a much better defender than Montero.

  59. CBean says:

I thought Canadians were supposed to be polite.

  60. Bill says:

The Toronto fans are so tough.

  61. Monteroisdinero says:

Maybe Bartolo Garcia and AJ Hughes should be our 3rd and 4th starters in the post season. 3-4 innings each.

  62. Jetrer says:

    wtf Nunez

  63. Bill says:

    WTF was Nunez thinking?

  64. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Price is back for the 4th

  65. mbonzo says:

    Trade Nunez, thanks.

  66. CBean says:

    what is wrong with Nunie?

  67. Monteroisdinero says:

Nunez takes over from Cano as dumbest guy on the bases.

  68. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    what happened with Nunez?

  69. ArchStanton says:

It’s my fault- I was really bragging up Nunez to my brother and how big he was in being able to fill in for various guys, and he has sucked ever since.

  70. ItsATarp says:

Trade Nunez…the dude can’t do anything right

  71. Sarah says:

I know the offense took a little mini-break over this road trip, but maybe it should come back today? Make the road trip a .500 road trip. Please?

  72. Karl Krawfid says:

Why do we have to watch Scott Proctor pitch this many times.

  73. Monteroisdinero says:

Montero should be playing everyday. Let’s get moving on the growing pains and put them behind us asap.

  74. Dennis says:

Why is this clown in the game, its not enough we have the give up offense and now we have the blow out pitcher

  75. Cy Pettitte says:

Rays running wild, this is hilarious

  76. Monteroisdinero says:

Sox down 5-2. Salty cannot catch Wakefield.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

      - D. Jennings singled to center
      - D. Jennings stole second
      - D. Jennings to third on wild pitch
      - D. Jennings scored on passed ball

so funny, Salty didn’t have a chance catching those last two.

  77. Karl Krawfid says:

    This is a joke man.

  78. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Wakefield/Salty today:

2 wild pitches, 3 passed balls, 2 stolen bases, hbp.

  79. Sarah says:

Valdes? Well at least Joe isn’t using his best relievers in this losing game.

  80. mbonzo says:

Whens the last time Girardi calling in a LOOGY has worked? This better not happen in October.

  81. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

  82. Bill says:

Valdes should automatically move ahead of Laffey in the pecking order for that. He actually got out a lefty.

  83. Karl Krawfid says:

    lol Red Sox

  84. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Lol Aviles throws it away. 6-2 Rays.

    • joe says:

      Terrible play by AGon too.

He tried to keep his foot on the bag and he missed the ball by 6-12 inches (with 2 out and a gy on 2nd he should have just come off the bag and blocked it instead of trying the hero play).

  85. Sarah says:

    1 pitch, 1 out. Naturally.

  86. Bill says:

    Joe waving the white flag

  87. mbonzo says:

You mean, this game means nothing to the Yankees? SAY IT AIN’T SO KAY!

  88. Matt says:

It is inexcusable to lose this game with Pena getting one of the more crucial at bats with a runner on in the 8th inning.

You don’t even have to use a regular to pinch hit there. Jones? Montero? Posada? Even Golson is better than Pena.

Slide Nunez to short and put Laird at 2B if you have to. At least give yourself one chance at this game. If you somehow come back and win it, that makes your life a lot easier later, at the cost of only one pinch hit at bat and no time in the field.

The cost is almost nothing, and the reward is potentially high. How can you not even try?

  89. Monteroisdinero says:

The only explanation for this game is:

Mo: Don’t win this game Joe. I have mucho marketing plan$ for 602 at Yankee Stadium. There will be some money leftover for you!

  90. ArchStanton says:

I agree, no way should Pena have hit there. At least put up some kind of effort.

  91. Bill says:

I like what I’ve seen from Valdes today. Maybe it’s just because the lefty relievers have been so bad this year that it makes Valdes look good. I think he should get more opportunities, though.

  92. MikeD says:

Who is Valdez? I haven’t kept track of the LOOGY of the moment this month. Is he someone the Yankees claimed?

  93. Karl Krawfid says:

Papelbon should go to the Phillies.

    • mbonzo says:

That’d be interesting, I think they’ll be big players on Jose Reyes though.

      • Nuke LaDoosh says:

won’t the rSox jump on him?

      • Karl Krawfid says:

        They could get both.

Lidge and Rollins are free agents.

        • Karl Krawfid says:

          Naw n/m

I don’t think many would touch Reyes after the leg injuries.

          • MikeD says:

Lots will, it just depends on price. His calf injuries are going to cost him millions. He’ll still get millions, but he’ll get maybe one or two less years, and few million less for each.

Carl Crawford’s bad year, too, will make some pause.

        • mbonzo says:

Doubt it, Hamels and Pence are going into arb years and they still have to pick up Oswalt’s 2012 option. They’re probably looking at a $150m payroll before any free agency signings.

          • Karl Krawfid says:

I thought they already agreed not to pick up his option?

            • mbonzo says:

It was speculated that it was a condition of the trade, but that never solidified. Its possible the Phillies don’t pickup his option, but they still don’t have enough money to pay both guys.

              • MikeD says:

I haven’t read anything about the option. It’s for $16 million. I don’t know if Oswalt would have agreed to walk away from that.

I have read rumors he might only want to play one or two more seasons, which gets me to wondering. If the Phillies don’t pick it up and he’s a free agent, should the Yankees look at him if he could be had for two years?

  94. MikeD says:

Anyone want to guess the odds that Nunez attempts to steal, forgetting that stealing third in this situation is pointless? He is pretty dumb.

  95. Monteroisdinero says:

Just when you hate Nunez for Toolblan and throwing…….

  96. Monteroisdinero says:

And this game ends as 2010 did with an ARod K. Tomorrow is MOnday and it will be historic.

  97. Plinko Chips says:

Well even though they lost today it isn’t the end of the end of the world.

Long road trip that ended on a 4-6 swing with 5 walk offs.

Let’s wrap up this division this week at home.

  98. Bill says:

Hopefully the Yankees play a lot better at home than they did this road trip. Lots of mental mistakes on the basepaths and in the field, bad hitting, bad pitching, just bad baseball.

  99. MikeD says:

I don’t like Sunday games against the Blue Jays in September. It seems games like this pop up.

  100. Karl Krawfid says:

No reason at all for Joe G to start an everyday player against the Twins.

    No reason.

  101. Elan says:

Girardi seemed determined that the Yankees lose this game today. I’m sure most of these guys will be getting some rest in either games of the double header on Wednesday, so why sit Jeter, Granderson, and Teixeira today? Why not even allow them to pinch hit?

  102. Greg says:

I was watching football so I missed the game.

It looks like Girardi wanted to rest his guys so I have no problem with this loss.

  103. Jerome S. says:

“I’m watching the pathetic Stankees about to get their tails handed to them today in the 9th inning. But I swera they’ve
got 10 times more life and spunk in them going down in defeat on the road than the Sox have here at home in only the 6th inning. Go figure. Terry Francona is gonna have to answer for this team not mustering the energy to play sound ball for the home crowd.

Commenter at Over the Monster, a Red Sox blog.

  104. Kevin says:

If Tampa comes in and sweeps us and the O’s roll over for the Sox, guess what,we’ll be the ones hoping to win the Wild Card.
Boston has seven games left with the cellar dwellers of the AL East, we have seven games left with a red hot team that can and has shut us down.
Girardi is going to knock us out of the playoffs and our homefield advantage in one swoop.

    • Bill says:

Girardi shouldn’t rest his regulars and bullpen guys nearly as much as he has been lately. It’s time for the Yankees to start playing at full strength or close to it for the home stretch until the division is clinched. Then you can rest your guys. Enough of this white flag-giving up games bullshit. Girardi can’t keep banking on the Red Sox continuing to suck at this pace, they will probably wake up a little bit against the Orioles. At the same time, the Rays will be playing for their playoff lives, and if Girardi’s gonna rest his guys in those games, he’s creating an unnecessary threat to the Yanks winning the division or even making the postseason. Let’s hope he learned his lesson from last year that playing like shit going into the playoffs will not end well for this team.

      • Kevin says:

Indeed…Girardi is playing like we have the division clinched..when we don’t. As I said, all it takes is the Rays winning the next couple of games and us losing..yuck

        • Bill says:

Another thing is that while the Red Sox have sucked, the Yankees have been almost as bad during that same stretch, and have gained very little ground on them. Don’t forget, the Yankees have 3 games left with Boston. You can’t rule out the possibility that the Sox would sweep – they’ve won all 6 games at Yankee Stadium this year. And while i don’t think this will happen, it’s time for Girardi to stop fucking around.

    • Len S. says:

This is not going to happen. It’s akin to saying that tomorrow morning a little alien is going to crawl out of my asshole and start sucking my cock. Not going to happen. A little reality-thinking please.

    • Karl Krawfid says:

According to Kevin and Bill, The Yankees will not win another game.

      • tom says:

We saw their ilk during the final two weeks last year, as well. It makes one despair for the American educational system, that people’s math skills could be so poor.

      • Bill says:

I never said that. I said that the Yankees should play at full strength so they can clinch as soon as possible and play well going into the playoffs. Don’t put words into my mouth.

      • Len S. says:

Yes, they will. Sometime next July. Fucking Girardi! He just can’t win in New York. They suck so bad they should forfeit first place to the Jays. Why must I be cursed to follow a team that wins over 90 games a year. Fuck my life and cat!

  105. Karl Krawfid says:

Sox postgame is about to come on.
