Game 151: Rest

By

Ramiro's back in action today. (AP Photo/John Froschauer)

Now that we’re so late in the season and the Yankees have a playoff spot all but wrapped up, it’s time to start resting the regulars. Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira get the afternoon off while Robinson Cano gets off the turf and spends the day as DH. Given their recent workloads, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rafael Soriano and David Robertson were on today’s no pitch list. Expect more of this in the coming days. Here’s the lineup….

Brett Gardner, CF
Eduardo Nunez, 2B
Robinson Cano, DH
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eric Chavez, 1B
Russell Martin, C
Chris Dickerson, LF
Ramiro Pena, SS

Freddy Garcia, SP

The game starts at 1:07pmET and can be seen on YES. If you’re interested, the Rays and Red Sox will be playing at 1:35pm ET, and that game will be on TBS. Enjoy.

OMG!! What the hell?!? Girardi is not trying to win these friggin’ games!!!!!

    • Nuke LaDoosh

How dare they not go 162-0!
How dare they not play their Game 7 W.S. Linup every day!

      • Pat D

        I know!

  • Zanath

Couldn’t they have at least found a way to not have Ramiro Pena in the lineup?

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      sign Cody Ransom!!

      • Zanath

        Yes!

  • http://none Favrest

Ramiro Pena is the worst Yankee player since Cody Ransom. He should be released. Dickerson has earned the start today. He’s been able to come off the bench and add value in many ways.

    • Jon in ???JH

What would be gained by releasing him?

      • Russo>>>>Pena

Release Pena, bring up Russo, move Nunez to his true position (SS) and Russo spells Cano. At least Russo can hit better than .067

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

He’s also just a much better player than Ramiro Pena.

    • Rey22

Solid glove, no bat guy. Even though minimal, those guys have value in a September expanded roster MLB team. Plus they’re paying him next to nothing. What’s the point in releasing him?

    • Levi

Yeah Girardi, WTF, start Dickerson at Short!!!!!!!!11!!!!

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

I’m not going to enjoy it. Stop telling me what to do, Axisa.

  • Rey22

Girardi with the big guns against the Jays today.

    Go Rays.

  • Bronx Byte

The Rays will help the Yankees reduce the magic number by another game today.

  • Sarah

Nitpicking, but…Gardner is playing CF today.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Actually, no, both Gardner and Dickerson are playing left today.

      • Rey22

Playing LF and CF at the same time is nothing new for Gardner. We’ve seen him make plenty of fantastic catches in Granderson territory.

        • Sarah

This is true. Maybe some time they’ll have Gardner handle the entire OF, give everyone else a day off.

  • Tyrion Lannister

Looks like it’s a good day to watch the NFL.

  • Bill

Garcia’s gonna have to pitch a LOT better than he has lately if the Yankees are gonna win today with this lineup …

  • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

To be honest, I’ll be watching this game more than my Colts. Good God, are they gonna be terrible this year.

    • The Big City of Dreams

If they land Luck it might be worth it.

      • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

I’m actually hoping that happens. I’m willing to sacrifice a season for that.

  • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

Bold Prediction: Yankees score AT LEAST 8 runs in this one.

    • Bill

Well that didn’t turn out too well …

  • Naved

I want to see the Killer B’s pitch!

  • Pat D

    Why oh why Robbie?

  • Bill

Cano doesn’t even run hard when he’s trying to steal a base.

    • Karl Krawfid

      Cano is f’in slow.

      Should have stayed at first.

      • Bill

I agree that he should have stayed at first, but it almost looked like he was running half stride on that play.

  • Wooderson

is it just me or is the blue jays lineup horribly constructed?

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I hope Kay doesn’t really think that Girardi used Pena because he’d 4-7 against Morrow.

    • Kiko Jones

That’s exactly why he had Peña in there; Girardi confirmed it in the post-game interview. Ugh.

  • Sheepmeister

Garcia must be Bautista’s kryptonite since all he throws are off speed pitches.

  • bonestock94

    HR/FB regression

  • Jetrer

somewhat interesting article about Granderson’s RBI success, if anyone is interested
    http://www.beyondtheboxscore.c.....granderson

  • Bill

    Johnson was clearly out.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Jerry Meals is dumb.

Why must they have all the idiot umps in one group?

    • Bill

      Most umps are idiots

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I guess it’s better to group them all together. Have one really awful crew than a bunch of good ones, rather than three or four bad ones and fewer good ones.

  • Nuke LaDoosh

How on earth is JLo and Fiat a good fit for sponsorship? I’m saying thumbs down on the commercial although nice watching her move.

    • Cy Pettitte

Fiat is dumping some serious money on that campaign. I see that commercial like 10 times a day, lol.

    • Bill

      She still got it.

      • The Lazzeri Scooter

got what? talent? beauty (inner or outer)? compassion?

Nope on all counts. She’s a bitch that’s all.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

haha I love watching Salty try to catch Wakefield.

    • Cy Pettitte

If the Rays can’t steal like 10 bases today that’s just disappointing

  • Jetrer

    nice catch

  • Cy Pettitte

Johnny puts the Rays on the board 1-0.

    • Cy Pettitte

Joyce singles in Damon, 2-0 Rays

    • Jimmy

      2-0. Heh.

  • ArchStanton

Cano would’ve had that Pedroia :)

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Matt Joyce with a RBI single that would have been handled by every 2nd basemen thats not 5′ 7″

    • Jetrer

      height > grit

  • Jimmy

Cano with a HR shot too lazy to leave the park.

  • Karl Krawfid

    That was a slider John.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

3-0 Rays on a Desmond Jennings hit!

  • Karl Krawfid

    This Fenway meltdown is amazing.

    Nothing like 2006 though.

  • CBean

I guess i’m glad I picked Lind in pick six today

  • Cy Pettitte

    LOL Freddy.

  • Grandy

Throw him one up or something.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Fuck the Jays man.

    Cheatin’ ass team.

    • The Lazzeri Scooter

why does the YES crew not bring up that confirmed cheating incident? Why doesn’t Kay complain and mention the Jays dirty tricks?

Nope, we’re left with pointless Kay-Flattery banter- sigh.

  • Jimmy

Adam Lind vs. Garcia today 2 for 2, 1.000/1.000/4.000.

    Granted SSS.

  • TomH

Freddy shaky again. Colon shaky again yesterday. I dunno about this rotation for the post-season.

    • Karl Krawfid

2 runs in 4 innings against the Jays.

      VERY SHAKY.

      • Death By BB Gun

The homeruns hurt obviously, but Freddy’s looked okay so far.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I’d rather have our rotation than that of the team in Boston.

  • Monteroisdinero

Nunez/Pena at 2B/SS. better than the other way around? With Garcia pitching? I guess the binder knows.

  • Paul T

Anyone see asshole lupica’s column today? Says bucholz injury more hurtful to sox than any Yankees injury…said they would be EASILY in first if he didn’t get hurt

    • Karl Krawfid

      But guess what.

      He did.

      lol

    • Cy Pettitte

so he’s saying that if things were different they wouldn’t be the same?

      startling revelation

    • The Lazzeri Scooter

      why do you care?

Everyone who knows anything about sports knows that individual is bigoted, biased dirtbag. Every competent sportsfan knows this fact.

So, why bring up the obvious rantings of this idiot? Giving this fool way too much credit. Just ignore this pathetic troll & boycott the Daily News until they fire him.

My life has been much more pleasent and peaceful ever since I did. You should try it… its not like you need cheap tabloids for sports info anymore, right?

  • ArchStanton

I would’ve started Jorge at second.

    • Jimmy

      And Mo in Center Field.

  • Bill

Garcia’s gonna have to keep the score right here, because Morrow is mowing the Yankees down.

  • Urban

Brandon Morrow, the new AJ Burnett that the Yankees will overpay for one day because of how he pitches against the Yankees?

Joking aside, I think Morrow will have a good year in 2012. He’s been a bit unlucky this year…not including when he pitches against the Yankes.

  • Monteroisdinero

He can be there for the last inning of the regular season.

    • Monteroisdinero

I meant Jorge at 2B. Reply fail.

  • ArchStanton

Listening to the TBS broadcast and the announcer asked Smoltz if he had ever been on the same staff as knuckle-baller as Wakefield pitches. Smoltz says no- wonder if he’ll be as successful keeping that Sox stint off of his possible HOF plaque?

    • Bill

      That’s funny.

      • Monteroisdinero

Laffey is funny. Joe not playing to win or is he? He is so confusing!

        • Bill

I don’t think that was a bad move. Garcia wasn’t pitching well today, and Lind had hit 2 homers off him the previous 2 at bats.

    • Urban

The Yankees hit Smoltz so hard that he may still be dealing with concussion syndrome and his memory may not have returned.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

oh shit, I hope Price is ok.

  • Karl Krawfid

Can I please see Betances or Brackman?

  • Cy Pettitte

ugh Price just took a line drive to the chest. not good.

    • Urban

      Any update?

      • Cy Pettitte

throwing pitches off the mound, staying in for now.

        • ArchStanton

That was scary. Ouch. I’ll be surprised if he comes out for the fourth once that thing starts to bruise.

  • Urban

It’s Halladay or Lee. I really can’t pick between them right now.

  • Tyrion Lannister

Freddy’s probably out of the postseason rotation with another good Hughes outing. Rays will put us one number closer to the division.

    • Bill

I doubt that. I don’t think Girardi would put Garcia in the pen.

    • TomH

Well, I call that a SHAKY performance by Freddy making me think you’re right that he weakened himself for a playoff spot. 4.2 innings, lousy strike/ball ratio. I would be much happier though if that other “good Hughes outing” you mention came against a good team.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Fuck you Tony Larussa.

It’s to damn early to be making all these changes.

  • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

    LNOGY’d

  • Karl Krawfid

You don’t make pitches changes like this when you start a shitty lineup like you did Joe.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Time for Ayala to give up a bases clearing double and have his ERA stay nice and low!

    • Bill

Worst pitcher in baseball with an under 2.00 ERA

  • Urban

Gotta hold it here, Luis. 3-0 normally not a major issue, unless facing a pitcher on his game like Morrow, and the Yankees B-lineup today.

    • TomH

About that “b-lineup.” I’m glad I didn’t take my grandsons to the game today. Not just because they can’t STAND to see the Yankees lose to the Jays, but because they wouldn’t have seen Jeter, Tex, and Granderson. I’m coming to think Sunday isn’t the day to see the Yanks in Toronto. Last time there was no Jeter, no Teixeira and (the dl) no Arod.

      • Urban

It gets tricky this time of year. Sunday games are almost always afternoon games, meaning they’re usually day games after night games, and get-away days, which adds up to a formula that leads to lots of rest for the regulars.

I was going to say you might want to look for a Sunday game when the Yankees have the next day off, increasing the odds the regulars will play. Then I realized that was the case today, but then they had to add in unscheduled make-up game for tomorrow.

  • Monteroisdinero

Zobrist batting righty against Wake. As does Tex.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

lol another passed ball for Salty.

  • ArchStanton

Look at the ace part of our bullpen locking it down :)

  • Cy Pettitte

4-0 Rays Sean Rodriguez sac fly

  • Monteroisdinero

Hard to believe Salty is a much better defender than Montero.

  • CBean

I thought Canadians were supposed to be polite.

    • TomH

What happened? I’m practicing black magic today and not watching.

      • CBean

not entirely sure but they’ve got cops out near the bullpen. Possibly fans being bad at the Yankee relievers– I’d imagine they’d have to be throwing stuff in order for cops to be actually involved

    • The Lazzeri Scooter

      Nah, just funny and dumb.

      Mostly the latter.

  • Bill

The Toronto fans are so tough.

  • Monteroisdinero

Maybe Bartolo Garcia and AJ Hughes should be our 3rd and 4th starters in the post season. 3-4 innings each.

  • Jetrer

    wtf Nunez

  • Bill

    WTF was Nunez thinking?

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Price is back for the 4th

  • mbonzo

    Trade Nunez, thanks.

  • CBean

    what is wrong with Nunie?

  • Monteroisdinero

Nunez takes over from Cano as dumbest guy on the bases.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Cano? Have you forgot about Posada?

      • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

        1. Posada
        2. Nunez
        3. Cano

      • Monteroisdinero

Good point. We need a name or stat for dumb baserunning.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          We have one already: TOOTBLAN

          Google it.

          • Monteroisdinero

Thrown out on the basepaths like a nincompoop. For the Yanks and Sado/Cano/Nunez we need one in Spanish. Salty would insist.

      • MikeD

Not even close. Nunez is the king of the dumb plays.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    what happened with Nunez?

  • ArchStanton

It’s my fault- I was really bragging up Nunez to my brother and how big he was in being able to fill in for various guys, and he has sucked ever since.

  • ItsATarp

Trade Nunez…the dude can’t do anything right

    • Bill

      His baseball IQ is non-existent

    • TomH

In principle, yes. But a really careful trade because there is probably some serious interest out there, no matter what his baseball i.q. is.

      • Bill

I think all this “interest” in Nunez is a little overblown. He had one very good year in the minors in 2009, other than that he’s nothing special.

  • Sarah

I know the offense took a little mini-break over this road trip, but maybe it should come back today? Make the road trip a .500 road trip. Please?

    • Urban

I don’t think they have the right line-up out there today for that, although maybe if Morrow is taken out they’d have a better chance.

      • Sarah

        Probably true.

  • Karl Krawfid

Why do we have to watch Scott Proctor pitch this many times.

  • Monteroisdinero

Montero should be playing everyday. Let’s get moving on the growing pains and put them behind us asap.

    • Bill

I think the only reason he’s not playing today is because they wanted to give Cano a half day off at DH and they’re not gonna put Montero behind the plate. I agree that he should be playing every day, though.

      • Monteroisdinero

I hate this micro-managing/analysis-paralysis bullshit. Is Desmond Jennings playing everyday? Give Montero 4 abs every game.

        • Sarah

Tampa doesn’t have ARod, Jeter, Cano or Tex to pay (and play).

          • Monteroisdinero

            Pay for sure.

        • MikeD

Desmond Jennings? The guy the Rays sent to the minors for a second year of AAA, and then called up late, perhaps costing them the postseason?

  • Dennis

Why is this clown in the game, its not enough we have the give up offense and now we have the blow out pitcher

    • Bill

It’s apparent that Joe is not gonna put Betances or Brackman in a game. So who else would you put in?

  • Cy Pettitte

Rays running wild, this is hilarious

  • Monteroisdinero

Sox down 5-2. Salty cannot catch Wakefield.

    • Cy Pettitte

      - D. Jennings singled to center
      - D. Jennings stole second
      - D. Jennings to third on wild pitch
      - D. Jennings scored on passed ball

so funny, Salty didn’t have a chance catching those last two.

  • Karl Krawfid

    This is a joke man.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Wakefield/Salty today:

2 wild pitches, 3 passed balls, 2 stolen bases, hbp.

  • Sarah

Valdes? Well at least Joe isn’t using his best relievers in this losing game.

  • mbonzo

Whens the last time Girardi calling in a LOOGY has worked? This better not happen in October.

    • Sarah

I miss the Boone who was good..ish.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Raul Valdes lives!

    • Nuke LaDoosh

I believe his dad Juan came up briefly for a cup of coffee with the Padres in the 70′s.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    LOOGY!!!

  • Bill

Valdes should automatically move ahead of Laffey in the pecking order for that. He actually got out a lefty.

    • SDM

Why is Laffey even on the roster? he’s awful

      • MikeD

You mean the guy who won yesterday’s game?

It’s September. Lots of junk shows up in September, especially when the team has no reliable lefty.

        • SDM

One game does not negate all the crap he’s done it might for you but not me.

          • MikeD

I can now die a happy man knowing that.

  • Karl Krawfid

    lol Red Sox

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Lol Aviles throws it away. 6-2 Rays.

    • joe

      Terrible play by AGon too.

He tried to keep his foot on the bag and he missed the ball by 6-12 inches (with 2 out and a gy on 2nd he should have just come off the bag and blocked it instead of trying the hero play).

  • Sarah

    1 pitch, 1 out. Naturally.

  • Bill

    Joe waving the white flag

    • Bill

Pena shouldn’t be in the major leagues.

  • mbonzo

You mean, this game means nothing to the Yankees? SAY IT AIN’T SO KAY!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Every game means something, but it isn’t the end of the world if they lose today.

  • Matt

It is inexcusable to lose this game with Pena getting one of the more crucial at bats with a runner on in the 8th inning.

You don’t even have to use a regular to pinch hit there. Jones? Montero? Posada? Even Golson is better than Pena.

Slide Nunez to short and put Laird at 2B if you have to. At least give yourself one chance at this game. If you somehow come back and win it, that makes your life a lot easier later, at the cost of only one pinch hit at bat and no time in the field.

The cost is almost nothing, and the reward is potentially high. How can you not even try?

    • Evan3457

      Because it’s not necessary?

  • Monteroisdinero

The only explanation for this game is:

Mo: Don’t win this game Joe. I have mucho marketing plan$ for 602 at Yankee Stadium. There will be some money leftover for you!

  • ArchStanton

I agree, no way should Pena have hit there. At least put up some kind of effort.

  • Bill

I like what I’ve seen from Valdes today. Maybe it’s just because the lefty relievers have been so bad this year that it makes Valdes look good. I think he should get more opportunities, though.

  • MikeD

Who is Valdez? I haven’t kept track of the LOOGY of the moment this month. Is he someone the Yankees claimed?

    • mbonzo
      • MikeD

Thanks. Career minor leaguer, not pretty stats overall, but maybe he has some LOOGY potential for next year if he’s still around.

    • Monteroisdinero

He is Juan’s younger brother. Coffee upgrade in the clubhouse.

  • Karl Krawfid

Papelbon should go to the Phillies.

    • mbonzo

That’d be interesting, I think they’ll be big players on Jose Reyes though.

      • Nuke LaDoosh

won’t the rSox jump on him?

      • Karl Krawfid

        They could get both.

Lidge and Rollins are free agents.

        • Karl Krawfid

          Naw n/m

I don’t think many would touch Reyes after the leg injuries.

          • MikeD

Lots will, it just depends on price. His calf injuries are going to cost him millions. He’ll still get millions, but he’ll get maybe one or two less years, and few million less for each.

Carl Crawford’s bad year, too, will make some pause.

        • mbonzo

Doubt it, Hamels and Pence are going into arb years and they still have to pick up Oswalt’s 2012 option. They’re probably looking at a $150m payroll before any free agency signings.

          • Karl Krawfid

I thought they already agreed not to pick up his option?

            • mbonzo

It was speculated that it was a condition of the trade, but that never solidified. Its possible the Phillies don’t pickup his option, but they still don’t have enough money to pay both guys.

              • MikeD

I haven’t read anything about the option. It’s for $16 million. I don’t know if Oswalt would have agreed to walk away from that.

I have read rumors he might only want to play one or two more seasons, which gets me to wondering. If the Phillies don’t pick it up and he’s a free agent, should the Yankees look at him if he could be had for two years?

  • MikeD

Anyone want to guess the odds that Nunez attempts to steal, forgetting that stealing third in this situation is pointless? He is pretty dumb.

  • Monteroisdinero

Just when you hate Nunez for Toolblan and throwing…….

  • Monteroisdinero

And this game ends as 2010 did with an ARod K. Tomorrow is MOnday and it will be historic.

  • Plinko Chips

Well even though they lost today it isn’t the end of the end of the world.

Long road trip that ended on a 4-6 swing with 5 walk offs.

Let’s wrap up this division this week at home.

    • well you know

      4 walkoffs

  • Bill

Hopefully the Yankees play a lot better at home than they did this road trip. Lots of mental mistakes on the basepaths and in the field, bad hitting, bad pitching, just bad baseball.

  • MikeD

I don’t like Sunday games against the Blue Jays in September. It seems games like this pop up.

  • Karl Krawfid

No reason at all for Joe G to start an everyday player against the Twins.

    No reason.

  • Elan

Girardi seemed determined that the Yankees lose this game today. I’m sure most of these guys will be getting some rest in either games of the double header on Wednesday, so why sit Jeter, Granderson, and Teixeira today? Why not even allow them to pinch hit?

    • Evan3457

Because they might need MORE than one day off?
Because they’re flying home to a DAY game tomorrow.

      I dunno.

  • Greg

I was watching football so I missed the game.

It looks like Girardi wanted to rest his guys so I have no problem with this loss.

  • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

“I’m watching the pathetic Stankees about to get their tails handed to them today in the 9th inning. But I swera they’ve
got 10 times more life and spunk in them going down in defeat on the road than the Sox have here at home in only the 6th inning. Go figure. Terry Francona is gonna have to answer for this team not mustering the energy to play sound ball for the home crowd.

Commenter at Over the Monster, a Red Sox blog.

    • mbonzo

Yea, amazingly Red Sox fans are just like Yankees fans when they lose.

  • Kevin

If Tampa comes in and sweeps us and the O’s roll over for the Sox, guess what,we’ll be the ones hoping to win the Wild Card.
Boston has seven games left with the cellar dwellers of the AL East, we have seven games left with a red hot team that can and has shut us down.
Girardi is going to knock us out of the playoffs and our homefield advantage in one swoop.

Girardi shouldn’t rest his regulars and bullpen guys nearly as much as he has been lately. It’s time for the Yankees to start playing at full strength or close to it for the home stretch until the division is clinched. Then you can rest your guys. Enough of this white flag-giving up games bullshit. Girardi can’t keep banking on the Red Sox continuing to suck at this pace, they will probably wake up a little bit against the Orioles. At the same time, the Rays will be playing for their playoff lives, and if Girardi’s gonna rest his guys in those games, he’s creating an unnecessary threat to the Yanks winning the division or even making the postseason. Let’s hope he learned his lesson from last year that playing like shit going into the playoffs will not end well for this team.

Indeed…Girardi is playing like we have the division clinched..when we don’t. As I said, all it takes is the Rays winning the next couple of games and us losing..yuck

Another thing is that while the Red Sox have sucked, the Yankees have been almost as bad during that same stretch, and have gained very little ground on them. Don’t forget, the Yankees have 3 games left with Boston. You can’t rule out the possibility that the Sox would sweep – they’ve won all 6 games at Yankee Stadium this year. And while i don’t think this will happen, it’s time for Girardi to stop fucking around.

This is not going to happen. It’s akin to saying that tomorrow morning a little alien is going to crawl out of my asshole and start sucking my cock. Not going to happen. A little reality-thinking please.

According to Kevin and Bill, The Yankees will not win another game.

We saw their ilk during the final two weeks last year, as well. It makes one despair for the American educational system, that people’s math skills could be so poor.

      • Bill

I never said that. I said that the Yankees should play at full strength so they can clinch as soon as possible and play well going into the playoffs. Don’t put words into my mouth.

      • Len S.

Yes, they will. Sometime next July. Fucking Girardi! He just can’t win in New York. They suck so bad they should forfeit first place to the Jays. Why must I be cursed to follow a team that wins over 90 games a year. Fuck my life and cat!

  • Karl Krawfid

Sox postgame is about to come on.

    lol.
