Game 153: Win-win
ByYou know what the best part of tonight’s game is? It’s that no matter what happens, it’ll be a pretty good outcome for the Yankees. A win drops the magic number for a playoff spot to just two, and a loss allows the Rays to (at least) keep pace with the Red Sox for the wildcard. I know Boston’s rotation looks ugly at the moment (and it is), but I have zero interest in facing John Lester/Josh Beckett/Erik Bedard six times in a seven game series with that offense and Daniel Bard/Jonathan Papelbon at the end of the game. I’d rather take my chances with Tampa’s rotation, Evan Longoria and some other dudes, and Joel Peralta/Kyle Farnsworth. Here’s the lineup…

This is ridiculous Montero plays every two or three games Girardi needs to give him regular at bats to get him ready for the playoffs and get him into a rythm.
He also needs to give Chavez at bats heading into the postseason. And giving a-rod half a night off isnt the worst thing in the world
Jesus should be prioritized because (a) every game dramatically increases his total Major League experience and (b) he should be getting more postseason at bats than Chavez.
The best case scenario is to reduce the magic number as soon as possible and be assured of home field advantage.
Have Baltimore win the next 2 games and if the Yankees split with the Rays it makes it easier for the Yankees to knock out Boston by themselves over this coming weekend.

I’ve already come to peace with the fact that Boston will very very likely make the playoffs regardless of their recent slide, so these games are so incredibly stress-free for me. If the Yankees win, great, an inch closer to the playoffs, and if they lose, it keeps the pressure on Boston for one more day. All’s good.

I think it’s just a TAD different when playing one of the worst teams in baseball in the beginning of the year as opposed to the end. I’d certainly rather face the O’s for two series than have to tee off against the Rays and Sox. The Sox have it easier, I don’t think that anyone can argue that. The Sox home stretch, their run for October, is only impeded by Buck Showalter, not CC Sabathia, Robinson Cano, David Price, and Evan Longoria…
While we play the Rays in two series, the same Rays that were one of the best teams in baseball. I’m convinced that the Sox are given preferential treatment when it comes to scheduling, but that’s just me.

Well, I remember his 1st big league start last year when he repeatedly went up and in on Bautista in Toronto. Something rarely seen from Yankee pitchers not named Sabathia. And he was hitting 97-98 regularly.

How much of this is legit from Nova and how much of it is him pitching over his head? I’m not sure what to believe at this point.
I’d say legit, think about it he really was two pitch pitcher at the beginning of the year. He learns his slider, and uses it as both a complementary weapon and an out pitch. He’s keeping guys off balance, then add in his strong GB tendencies and improved command the guy is legit.
Nova strikes me as a guy that has an above average baseball IQ, he’s also shown steady improvement every start, which is definitely encouraging.

It wasn’t long ago the Yanks had a slim lead over them in runs scored; now they’re about 25 runs ahead. Amazingly (given pre-season prediction, and even perception among some now) it’s the pitching that’s accounted for the Yankees winning out.
They needed 18 runs to win the Wakefield game and to win last night. I think they allowed something like 9 or 10 in each game though. I Agree get CC his 20th win and tank the rest.
