Game 154: Time to take care of business
ByIt’s very simple: if the Yankees win one more game against the Rays this year, they’re going to the playoffs. Let’s not drag this out, take care of business this afternoon. Here’s the lineup…
Brett Gardner, CF
Derek Jeter, SS
Robinson Cano, DH
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, 1B
Andruw Jones, LF
Eduardo Nunez, 2B
Austin Romine, C
Hector Noesi, SP
Game one of the doubleheader starts a little after 1pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Noesi spot start, this should be fun
This game can be thrown vs Shields, probably won’t win anyway with a spot starter on the mound. Win tonight with CC and go to the playoffs. Keep the Rays in the race.
o ye of little faith!
i have a feeling the Yanks are going to win this one…and tonight.
I agree. I think they have a better than average chance of winning today. I think even our AAAA lineup can run & gun with this team.
So…Jesus Montero. Will he actually get to start a game at catcher after they clinch the wild card or the division?
Girardi prefers defense-first catchers, so who knows? I hope that won’t effect Montero’s career in NY from here on out. Cashman can’t let that happen.
I’m actually excited to see Noesi start. I hope he can open some eyes and crack the rotation sometime next season. I personally think he has the stuff to do it.
so I just heard that the guy that served child support papers to Bedard yesterday is a huge Yankee fan and he showed up dressed all in Yankee gear!
BRILLIANT!!
You’ve been served by the best my friend. Keep it real.
I heard that too, and it’s amazing. Even if the guy isn’t a Yankee fan, I love the effort he put into it.
simply fcking awesome!
What an odd lineup.
Why not start CC in game one, go for the jugular this afternoon and play the Scranton line up tonight?
Sabathia probably said he’d prefer to pitch at night.
Thats a good reason. I was just nitpicking a little. It really doesn make that much of difference…
So I think it’s safe to say at this point that Montero is not a catcher.
Eh, let’s see what happens after the off-season once he’s had more time around the ML coaching staff. If next year rolls around and he’s still DH’ing(and god, please let it be against RHP AND LHP), then yeah.
I’m still not convinced either way.
Yep, all the starts Romine is getting is pretty good confirmation that they don’t consider him anything more than a emergency catcher.
Any harm in trying to teach the kid a little first base?
Starting DH, backup 1B, emergency catcher.
Vmart 2.0+??
I’m just surprised I’ve never heard anything about the Yankees trying him out somewhere else on the diamond. First base seems to be the most logical choice. And he’ll still be a young kid when Teix is nearing the end of his deal.
i bet he gets a lot of work there in the off season. I’d try him in the OF and at 3b also. need to preserve that body for the big bat.
Not at all. He’s played first in winter ball, and I remember seeing Mark Newman say that all the team’s catching prospects get work at first on the side in the minors.
Nice. Great info.
That makes me worry that Posada will make the playoff roster over Jesus. I hope I’m wrong, but…
you have to assume that Montero is on the Playoff roster regardless.
I’m amazed they kept him at catcher this long if that’s how they feel. They clearly weren’t fooling other teams into believing he’d stick at catcher, so I don’t see what they gained. Didn’t he end the previous two seasons on the DL with injuries sustained from getting hit by foul balls? Seems like they put him at high risk of getting hurt for little gain.
I figured he’d be around Posada level if they kept him there that long. Didn’t expect him to be good, but at least good enough to justify being a part time catcher.
Montero has no business catching.
When was the last time that you had a 21 year old catcher universally acknowledged as terrible defensively turn into a decent major league product behind the plate?
Only place for him on this team is at DH, maybe occasional a day at 1B.
I’d love to see Martin for the next year or two as some of the better defensive prospects mature.
Both Romine and Montero have caught Noesi over the last two years.
who would be our DH if playoffs were tomorrow?
I think that question is a little complicated. There are a lot scenarios to think about. Whos pitching against us? Is Arod playing third? Is Posada on the roster? IS Romine on the roster? Do you want to have Chavez in the lineup? Is Jones playing LF in place of Gardner?
If the playoffs started tomorrow, I wouldn’t be that surprised to see Chavez at 3B and ARod at DH.
My guess is Montero DH’s against lefties and Chavez/A-Rod against righties.
Would you start JOnes in LF against a tough lefty?
Probably.
We’ll find out. Yankees could play Texas in the first round and CJ Wilson will certainly start game 1 for them. If it was me I would, because if you want you could put Gardner in left for defense or come in as a PR and then play D late in the game.
I agree with that and if thats the case I would probably start Arod at third and Montero as the DH, assuming Romine is also on the roster…
Yeah, there’s a very good chance, if not a 100% chance, that Romine will be on the roster due to Cervelli’s concussion. I believe he’s out for the year, not quite sure, but wouldn’t be surprised if he is.
Phuck, I wanted Phil to pitch.
Sad face
So did the Rays.
better question is if we win the afternoon game, do you trot out the full AAA line up tonight? I think I would.
not when CC is going for this 20th win
Yeah. The only reason not to would be to get A-Rod more AB’s. But since he’s playing in the field today, I think you’d give him the whole night off.
ideally, Montero catches and A-Rod DH’s. but, well, you know
I’d looooove to see this:
Nunez
Martin
Jones
Chavez
Montero
Laird
Golson
Dickerson
Pena
Betances SP
Never mind CC will start, but he could be on a 80ish pitch count since his next start will probably be on 3 days rest against Boston.
CC is going to pitch on Monday against Tampa So that he is lined up to pitch game one Next Friday.
gotta be a huge blow to jesus ego that girardi wont let him catch
Does Jennings have the ABs for RoY consideration?
Yes.
in case you missed it, I’ll repost this from an earlier thread…this is very funny. a drunk, pissed of Red Sox fan just going off!
wow, Noesi. what was that 8 pitches?
A 95 2-seamer? nice.
Nice 10 pitch inning by Hector.
Noesi will throw 4 or 5 great innings, then Proctor will come in and get shelled
Do you use up the bullpen in game one to clinch a playoff spot?
James Shields is a badass. That is all.
and Jamie Shields is not
Gotta give Girardi credit, most managers wouldn’t bench their MVP canidate as he’s just emerging from a slump….
He will play tonight.
It’s only for half a day.
THey play a game tonight, you do know that?
I do know that Greg. Do you know that baseball players can play two games in one day. You know that right? Anyway, not a big deal, I just don’t get why you sit the hot hand…even if they play another game tonite
Would it kill you to do something simple like look up Teixeira’s numbers against Shields? If you’re going to give him and most everyone else one of the two games off, this was very obviously the game for Teix.
He’ll play tonight. It’s not exactly a benching, it’s like a regularly scheduled night game after a night game.
Hmmm … that seemed backwards.
great..audio feed issues. sounds like Sterling is broadcasting from the terlit.
Was the originally scheduled game today a day game?
Yep, and they were supposed to have tomorrow off. Instead they’ll play tonight and then again tomorrow.
thanks, but wow, WHY would you have a day game in the middle of the week with an off day for both teams tomorrow?
Don’t bother checking, Flaherty is dead on in terms of which pitchers he wrecked. Could have added Brad Radke too.
Centaur!
Woooo Alex.
Strong guy right there
Alex is starting to get locked in.
Cant go down and in to him
that’s why Cameron dumped him…
Jesus.
…should be playing.
That’s a good idea, take Posada out for the rest of the season.
Swish is embarrassing.
Dude is not healthy.
Needs to sit the fuck down.
Got JoPo on the knee.
Cant just throw fastballs, mix it up Noesi
that Curb Your Enthusiasm with Buckner was epic.
Let’s say Noesi pitches a gem for 4-5 innings at 50-60 pitches, then say he gets another start at say maybe 70-80 for 5-6 innings and pitches well again, and in the meantime Colon gets knocked around, again…You know where I’m going with this….So if those things happen, could we see Noesi start game 4 of the ALDS? A lot has to happen, and the odds are slim, but why not?
Garcia is probably more in danger of losing his spot than Colon, but either way, it would probably take mass injuries for Noesi to get a postseason start
True. Both have been shaky of late, and in their last three starts apiece Colon has slightly been better. But in my opinion it’d be best for Colon to go to the bullpen. His innings are piling up, and we’ve seen a drop off in fastball command with him for awhile now. It’d be a great story if Noesi can earn a start in the playoffs. Just some food for thought.
i think colon gets the start…BUT Noesi could be ready to roll.
I think he’ll be a longman/emergency starter in the playoffs like Gaudin in 09.
ooh that 3-2 change looked good.
Michael Kay wants Johnny Damon to get 3,000 hits more than Johnny Damon does.
Damon is the man.
still don’t get why he gets booed in fenway…those Sox fans are the real idiots
yea, he had one of the biggest hits in their history.
he played very well for the entire contract…plus, he was a face of that idiot team.
I said the same thing when Tampa played Boston.
the answer is in the question. they are absolute idiots. if you dont believe me, go look at the past week worth of posts an OTM…
so what 3-4 innings for Hector?
Too many fouls.
Thye are saying 50-60 pitches for Hector. He wasted a lot on that Loboton guy.
Him and Damon.
Jones looks like he might be starting to come back to earth.
Well Shields is (1) a very good pitcher and (2) a righty. But I am inclined to agree with you.
maybe he can call his mom for some pointers
Johnson is a dick.
HA!
Not intentional.
I hate innings like that, where they swing at the first pitch and let the pitcher get back into the groove. Especially after a decently long, run-scoring inning.
This was mentioned above but why doesn’t Swisher sit and “get healthy”? The guy is a crappy right fielder with a bum arm. Rest him.
And let me guess, they should play Golson instead.
He could have caught Johnson’s double!!
Exactly the point, Mike. Dickerson and Golson are not real offenseive threats, Dickerson’s homer off King Felix nonwithstanding.
Dickerson’s not a bad offensive player. Granted, he’s no Swisher.
It would be a revelation to have a truly outstanding rightfielder throwing runners out at 2nd/3rd and home. Never see that with Swisher.
He would have less HR’s but probably still hit .260 and steal a bunch of bases too. Yes-I know he won’t walk as much.
You’re too enamored with the throwing arm. It’s usually not a good sign when it’s a position player’s best tool.
Strikeout Jennings please.
Threw a high fastball, that’s what’s gonna happen.
Really impressive getting over that pitch at the letters. Jennings is going to be really f’ing good.
Jennings is one HR behind Crawford.
Carl Crawford: The $142 million version of Sam Fuld.
Id much rather have Betances pitching than Noesi. He’s much more important to the future of the franchise, and if Joe’s punting this game anyway, why not see what we have in Betances?
Mr. Walk the ballpark?
What makes you think they’re punting this game?
Starting Noesi on a 50 pitch count, starting the C lineup and having Valdes pitching when the game is remotely close.
If they were truly punting this game they wouldn’t play Jeter, ARod, Cano Swish, etc.
He could have Betances pitch the fourth and maybe more.
Do you really believe that’s going to happen?
No one said I couldn’t dream, right?
Betances just was promoted to Triple-A the last week (or two weeks) of the season. He’s never pitched in the bigs before. This is a potential postseason-clinching game for the Yankees. He hasn’t pitched since September 4th. Noesi is closer to helping this team than Betances is. Noesi was the one guy in the bullpen that could give the Yankees the most length.
Are those enough reasons for you?
GJ Hector.
Could have been worse.
noesi did a solid job, evan was out
Here’s Valdes.
Well, failure already.
But comes back to K Damon. Well done.
Chances we see either Brackman or Betances this game?
Hey all, unfortunately I do not have the game on, I’m at work
Why was Noesi taken out so early? Was he hit by a batted ball?
50 pitch count
Thanks, that’s kind of low though. If I do recall correctly, he let Noesi throw 75 pitches in a game several times. Figured he’d let him go 4 innings or so
season MLB high was 71, but that was June 7
hasn’t thrown more than 50 in MLB game since July 22
he ended with 55 today
Vida Blue for the trivia?
reply fail.
Keep mixing and matching with the AAA arms. We still have a good shot.
They don’t make changeups like that in Double-A, Austin.
His head must be spinning. His life has changed dramatically in the last few weeks.
Any chance he makes the playoff roster and Montero doesn’t? If the Yanks take a back up catcher, it’ll be Romine.
Regardless of what happens at catcher, does Montero have a spot locked up because he will be the starting DH?
Mike..are you in the meeting with Cash and Girardi to make these decisions?
you da man!
Win the CC game.
Now is not the time for Big Game James to have a big game.
Gotta let Tampa win one to keep things interesting.
el capitan with the wheels!
By the way, since Cano is hitting third instead of Tex, he must be getting pitches to hit.
Ace on the mound.
What the hell is wrong with you.
I’m just responding to what people said yesterday.
Because there’s no difference between Wade Davis and Jamie Shields.
Fair enough, but we’ve seen Cano hit the toughest pitchers.
I was the one saying he should hit third.
Swish is garbage right now. Tex can’t hit.
.250/.314/.438 since the elbow. He’s just a little off, not garbage.
Yeah but .211 in his last 38 at bats with 1 home run and 4 rbi.
I bet he got a hit in that 39th at bat.
Swish was garbage in April, Cano did just fine then
Roger Maris?
that was a k
That’s the second time in two games that we’ve avoided pitching to this guy. WTF.
Loboton…that is an unique name for a ball player.
I vote to see the kids today! All of them. It is no shame to lose to Complete Game James. A win would be better, of course.
I’m going to scream if Betances, Brackman, OR Kontos don’t see any action in this game.
There are a lot more important things to scream about than that.
Earplugs everyone!
(not insulting your scream)
arod got hosed
Gameday showed it right on the edge of the K zone.
mean on the first pitch curveball
It was a beautiful pitch.
In that inning, Shields threw only one fastball. A cutter to Posada that missed. Everything else was either Changeup, Slider, or Curveball.
Funny to hear them talk about FIP.
Jesse, you dont have to scream. Kontos is in.
Hooray! No screaming today for me.
Kontos was stretched out to 50 pitches or so in Triple-A, they could get three innings out of him.
You can tell Swisher’s elbow is still bothering him on that nice throw to hold Upton to a single.
/crickets
Heh. Exactly what I was thinking.
Kontos threw Upton three straight sliders.
Cant do that to a major league hitter unless each one is better than the last, as they say.
New Marlins logo, thoughts?
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net.....7841_n.jpg
Too much orange, although they may be going with the Miami Vice look.
U.G.L.Y
What the hell is that? It’s hideous.
It looks like it would belong to a gay Mets fan.
That’s uglier than the Mariln’s stadium.
It’s not good, but I like it better than their current logo – which I’ve always hated.
wow, that is Eastern League ugly!
New ugliest logo in baseball? New ugliest logo in baseball. They better have some NICE uniforms to make up fo that.
Joe wants to try and steal this game so he is mixing and matching.
If he really wanted to steal this game he wouldn’t have Laffey in there.
No idea why you don’t let Kontos finish the inning.
Probably because Maddon made his lineup with 5 lefties almost in a row at the end of it and Loboton is the only righty in that sequence.
So you rather have a garbage lefty than a decent righty pitching?
It’s the 5th inning. You don’t play matchups in the 5th inning of a pretty meaningless regular season game.
How does one get spasms in their back?
Twisting to watch foul balls too often.
OK, had a one hour meeting, what did I miss?
Shields doing his thing against our C-lineup. Our pitching has been decent considering we’re using the triple-A staff
Jennings 2 run home run.
A-Rod rbi double to score Jeter.
that was a hanger right down the middle.. thankfully Damon is old
And Laffey saves Girardi’s bacon
Well I’m glad Montero got 7 innings from the front office before being declared a bust.
I have a suggestion for Sterling when Romine hits a homer.
“Austin’s got Power, Baby Yeah!! He Shagged that ball rotten”
That would sound very creepy coming from Sterling
Gameday had it hit the top of K zone and a 100 nasty factor.
Reply fail
Susan can say it then…
IIRC, he said something along those lines for Kearns. “Austin Powers one out of there”
horseshit strike called
Worth it for Andruw’s reaction.
did he smile?
At the sky. After arching his back and looking upward.
I hate how Jesus is not in the line up. he is young he should be playing in both games. They should aim to keep him hot because Posada isn’t going to cut it as a full time DH in the postseason.
He’s not currently hot. .269 OBP over the last 2 weeks / 26 PAs.
Rather have Posada’s guaranteed 0-4 with 2 Ks
Rather not whine about the lineup of the first game of a doubleheader with a magic number of 1, actually.
Romine to bunt?
Comon Nunez, steal that bag
Hot damn Eduardo.
Nunie is out of control!
wow. nunez!!!!!
meanwhile, Sterling just told me Romine stole 3rd.
Ugh. Tough break.
The best laid plans…
wow, thats unfortunate… great AB by Romine though.
I hate Longoria man.
Did Romine hit it hard?
Scalded. Line drive right at Longoria.
well, try as you might Suzyn…
There’s atleast a 1/3 chance Nunez would have been doubled off 2B so maybe that steal didn’t change anything but our anger levels.
Laffey continues to suck, but at least he throws with his left hand, so that’s something.
Pull Laffey please.
Longoria did the same thing against the sox. summmmbitch
I wonder if Corey Wade spends any time chatting up Scott Proctor?
“For the first 50 games, I didn’t drink, but by July I was a mess.”
haha, ouch…
If Longoria pulls that crap again I’m going to steal his cap.
That’s not my cap.
Uhhh…
http://kissingsuzykolber.uprox.....-espn.html
I mean…that’s what happens when you have the greatest baseball team of all time, destined to win 172 games.
The rational boston fans(all 3 of them?) are shaking their heads now.
No “ESPN doesn’t favor Boston over NY” argument will ever hold water, from here on out.
i read about this “All Boston edition” and thought it was a joke…
counterpoint… I am morbidly curious to read what Artie wrote for ‘Boston Sucks’… anyone know if its out there online anywhere yet?
JETER!
Nice play Derek, like old times.
Jeter with some range
You guys who aren’t watching won’t believe this, but Jeter just ranged to the 1B side of 1st on a 6-3 putout.
The 1B side of 2B. 1B side of 1st is … I don’t know where.
1B side of 1B is…. foul? I guess?
Or is it the base itself?
I wouldn’t mind losing both if it means that the Rays are a half game within Boston.
Absolutely. Drop both games, Boston loses, we clinch, everyone wins.
how do we clinch if we drop both games???
I want the sweep against Boston too…I mean they’re a game away fromt he playoffs, three away from the division. Boston loses they’re just one and two. If this team can’t pick up a game against Boston then they don’t deserve the division.
true, just saying they couldn’t clinch today, which is what I think he was saying
not real confident about the series with Boston though, with probably Garcia and AJ pitching the first 2 games, and I’m sure Joe will be resting guys
and the magic number would be 2 for both playoffs and division in that scenario, fwiw
Ah, we don’t. I was thinking we were clear of Tampa and worst case after a Boston loss was a tie for the division lead and wild card like … 2005?
Besides Boston
Sorry for the smiley face but the Sox missing the playoffs makes me giddy.
That was a helluva play by the captain
If a leadoff double does not score is it really “escaping” the inning by the defensive team?
Mathematically, yes. Run expectancy is > 1 in that instance.
You just made John Sterling a mathematical genius.
Sterling: ‘There’s a shot to right. and it is deep. AND IT ISSSSS…. ummm, I dont know what it is.’
well, shit. glad you’re here.
I know. Thanks for being helpful. And the conclusion: “I guess it was a foul ball.”
‘well… something happened…!’
I think Kay has been hanging out with Sterling again.
Damn that was hit hard as hell
BIG GAME JAMES
COMPLETE GAME JAMES
cano has gotton 2 cookie from shields and missed them both
Probably the difference in speeds has something to do with that.
It seems whenever Cano does a lap around the batter’s circle he swings and misses at the next pitch, is this a trend or am I crazy?
Shields is not coming out of this game. He’s throwing 120 pitches if he has to.
He’s on pace for 132.
Golson doesnt make that catch.
Do the Yankees generally party after just clinching a wild card spot. (if they’re still fighting for the division)
Probably very mild celebration. If the Yankees were to win this game, I’m not sure they’d do much of anything considering there’s another game to follow.
it would be fun to watch game 2 with the entire team playing drunk though
if they win the game, yes. I think if they lose they dont start spilling the bubbly.
wow, Posada is a heart attack waiting to happen at both the dish AND the bag.
Well there was no other lefty alternative.
Swisher
Chavez
Hopefully Maddon overmanages and brings in a righty hitter to face Logan.
If you keep using lefties against Matt Joyce, one of them is bound to get him out eventually, right?
Bingo!
Joe’s just trying to fit the square peg in the round hole.
which is possible because we dont know how wide the hole is.
The circle is smaller than the square. That’s the point of the joke.
Ball, er, Binder don’t lie.
/Sheed’d
Ok, no more fooling around, this inning we take the lead.
So who was that lefty call up that’s wearing Boone Logan’s #?
Loone Bogan
Who has No-Va-Ko-La-Wa-Lo so far in the bullpen game pool?
Bold Prediction:
Jesus will PH for Posada in the bottom of the 9th and hit a walk off homerun.
It will have to be this inning.
not even fucking close
Yay 3-0 autostrikes
Dickerson to run for Posada, Granderson to hit for Jones… interesting move
interested to see what we do defensively, specifically.
Swisher to first?
or chavez?
Swisher to first, Dickerson in right, Grandy in center, Gardner in left.
How do postseason tickets work? If the game never happens, do the yankees just refund your credit card?
Yep.
Here comes Grandy
Dickerson to right, Swish to first, Grandy to CF, Gardner to LF. Vintage Girardi.
Called it.
well, that was anti-climactic.
Mo is going Hollywood on us
Man, what is the Yankees record in extra innings and one run games? In spite of the great record, it feels like we have been a bit unlucky this year.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/standings/_/type/expanded
Thanks, I didn’t know that was there. And we have been a little bit unlucky, it seems.
It’s why the team’s Pythagorean expectation has been off for most of the year. The Yankees haven’t done as well as they should in one-run games, and extra-inning games. Kind of surprising since the bullpen has been a strength and the strong hitting. That combination will sometimes lead to a team exceeding Pythagorean winning %.
The underperformance really doesn’t mean anything. Just randomness in any given year, but in most seasons the Yankees would have had the division locked up by now.
gottas gotta GOTTA hit Montero for Romine and take the chance with his glove behind the dish, right?
Mo cashing in new endorsement deals. Good for him.
I don’t want DRob to pitch in a losing game. Save his arm! Use someone else Joe!
C’mon Luis keep it a 1 run game.
Lobaton? Sounds like he should be in the next Transformers movie.
I think it means labia in Spanish
Once again, Boone does a great job against the lefties…
Hence why the possibility of Valdes or Laffey making the postseason roster.
2/3 aint bad for Boone
2/4. He hit Kotchman and allowed a single to Joyce.
Lobaton not Joyce
switch hitter, not lefty
he retired 2/3 lefties
Didn’t Joyce ground out to end the seventh?
What a convenient time for Zobrist to show up to the park.
It changed when we became a nation of panty-wearing men.
Eddie!
NUnie Nunie Nunie
Nunez!!!!!!!!!!!! wtf
Nunez with the hitting!
WTH is Sterling even saying? What sort of a call is that?
Sssssssee-YA!!!
Nunie!!
I thought for sure Jennings was goint to rob him for a second.
Dammit Nunez! We’re supposed to LOSE the first one and win TONIGHT!
It tells you how much better overall the Yankees are, that a conga-line of no-name pitchers kept this game so close against the Rays’ big game guy in a game the Rays need far more than NY.
Might be a post season strategy: “Hey Bart-give us your best 60 pitches and then Freddy will give us his best”
I imagine this will absolutely be the strategy. Every non-Sabathia starter has a leash shorter than something that is very short for the purpose of an analogy.
I think that weasel manager rode Shields a little too long.
Nunez looks like he’s more backswing than swing.
Suddenly my Jesus walkoff prediction is looking more and more like a possibility.
Love it.
DON’T BUNT JETER!!!
/sick of bunts
There would be no point. There’s already one out.
Exactly.
LOSE YANKEES!
You know this is a Yankees blog right?
Oh I hate the Red Sox so much
Well, we know you can’t be a Red Sox fan!
You might find yourself more comfortable over here with other Rays’ fans. Hope you don’t mind the sounds of crickets.
http://therayarea.com/
Does that rhyme with diarrhea?
Ha. Awesome.
So…Nunez, Nova, and Montero for 2 months of “Philly is the best city ever” Lee.
In hindsight, looks like a pretty good non-move.
Worse than that…those same players plus one of the B’s gone for Ubaldo.
That was the least clutch clutch HR I’ve ever seen by Nunez. It’s like they’re actually TRYING not to lose!
Yes! Bring the lefty in to face Cano!
Hahhahahahahahahahaha
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH
Might as well try to win this one. We could scratch CC and push him back to the Sox series. We could then start Eddie Cicotte in his place.
No, were trying to get him back on the 4 day.
Story of the game especially on the Rays side.
Yankees 0-2 RISP
Rays 1-10 RISP
I’m shocked! By reading the comments on this blog, I was convinced that the Yankees were the only team in MLB that were bad w/ RISP.
If we clinch now I’m assuming triple A team for the second game. Dammit I needed the win for CC.
Welp, looks like CC is going to have to have a CG tonight since today we have used a ton of pitchers and we’ll likely see Mo next if we can get a lead here. If we cant, well than god help CC tonight, lol.
cc-so-ro
no problem, but I’d rather the Yankees lose that game to make the Sux keep sweating
The Sux will sweat when the Yanks sweep them this weekend.
It’s then up to the Rays to take care of their business against the Jays.
probably Garcia, then AJ, then CC in a short start on 3 days rest, all while Girardi is resting players
Sweep would be great, but highly unlikely
If we clinch, we will probably see the rookies pitch tonight if CC doesnt go as deep.
Schields must be wondering how the back end of the Yankees bullpen equalled his performance over 8 innings.
Don’t be afraid of a walk, Robbie.
…and most certainly don’t be afraid of a two-run double!
Meh they suck in close games anyways.
Schields must be wondering how the back end of the Yankees bullpen equalled his performance over 7 innings.
um, we all are
A ribbie…for Robby!
Don’t cha know!! Robbie Cano!!!
There’s your wildcard clincher! Robbie Cano dontcha know.
Cano is awesome, per usual.
Robbie!
Mwahahahahahahaha
That’s what you get for bringing in a lefty to face Cano!!
Yes, bring in the lefty to face Cano.
It really is truly amazing.
I love Ribbie Cano
mmmmm, the AAA line up and mickey mouse BP lineup, and they are still winning.
When did JP Howell become Boone Logan?
When his shoulder gave up on him.
when Howells arm became Scott Proctors arm
Might be the end of the road for the Rays.
I think we all know Cano is a great hitter, but I have not seen a hitter consistently produce with big hits – xbase/HR – with bases loaded like Robbie this year.
Freakin amazing.
That’s why he’s the MVP for the Yanks with all due repect to Grandy.
yeah..someday we can all hope that Cano can catch up to that little midget in Beantown.
Really turning into a clutch hitting machine.
this is the way to do it…just win baby! wrap up the playoffs then the divisiion and then homefield and forget about the other teams.
Amen.
Cano may have just saved CC’s bacon from having to go 140 tonight if need be. Only thing left, get through the 9th with a 1,2,3.
Oh and for those saying we may see the Triple A lineup tonight. Let’s hope not. Let’s try to clinch the division today as well. Don’t let off the gas until the division is clinched.
Girardi isn’t like that though.
Hey guys, got out of work just in time to hear Nunez’s homer on the radio. I’m sick as a dog but it made my day =D How’s everyone doing this afternoon.
Mo time!
Sox lose tonight = we clinch.
for the division?
only if the Yankees win both games today
magic number was 3 for the division coming in to today
Yeah, hats what I meant.
#aheadofmyself
not necessarily, yanks would have to win tonight’s game too
You’re right. I mean AND win tonight.
Jamie Shields’s “oh fuck” look is almost as good as Papelbon’s.
I don’t know that you can use the word “almost”. NOTHING is better than seeing Papelbon’s failure face.
Sincerely Senor Andino.
There really isn’t. My peak MLB schadenfreude moments all involve either him or Beckett failing.
How does he let those two strikes down the middle go by him and then swing at that?
nice job cano
DUN DUN DENANUN DUN DUN DENANUN!
Smoke on the Water?
In A Gadda Da Vida?
Mo looks filthy today…
Anyone else have flashbacks of Grady Little keeping Pedro in too long? Not the same stakes (for the Yanks), but Changeup-artist Shields held his own until the end. Love it.
I was thinking the same thing, actually. Left him in one batter too long.
Michael Kay just can’t shut the hell up can he?
Describing the inside cutter? We know what the hell it does.
It cuts.
No, no he can’t. He loves the sound of his own voice.
PS, Hello post season everybody =D
Next stop the AL East!
It’s official- Yanks go to the playoffs!
Has this ever happened before? Play Game 2 drunk?
Not since Mantle & Ford
You know Boomer Wells showed up to game 2 of double headers drunk, especially if he won game 1.
Playoffs baby! Now lets clinch the division.
not cool, Frank Sinatra’s version or bust
Love the Frank version, but you hafta admit…this is an awesome cover.
meh
Well they did a pretty good job considering they are in the same division as the Greatest Team In Baseball History.

That article is great “Dice K, might be the best 5th starter ever”.
What the fuck is that graphic?
LOL, Jeter put a quick end to any talk of celebrating the wild card.
Exactly the mindset this entire team needs to have…
Suzyn Waldman stole my Aunt Hilda’s wardrobe. I swear.
Congrats on locking down a trip to the postseason. AL East title next!
Where’s the celebration? Not for the postseason, but for Mo setting a new all-time save record, something we’ll hopefully be able to see for several more years.
lol
Well technically he did set a new record today… and will after his next save… and the one after that….
They might as well celebrate every record he sets.
Just got home in time to see Rivera get the save. Damn, that seemed like one hell of a game.
Sixteen appearance in seventeen years…can we all just take a step back and for a second realize how damn lucky we are as Yankee fans?
As a high schooler during the Dallas Green-Stump Merrill-Bucky Dent era, I certainly am appreciating 16 out of 17.
I saw the score and assumed Noesi did well. 7 1/2 scoreless from the pen though!? God damn.
