Game 157: No mercy (UPDATE: Rained out)

Already clinched the division? Big deal. Joe Girardi is running his A+ lineup out there tonight, showing no mercy against a team he has every reason to want out of the postseason. Unfortunately Mother Nature is much more kind, as the rain could force the Yankees skipper to change his lineup plans. Here’s the starting nine, which is subject to change…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Andruw Jones, LF
Jesus Montero, DH
Russell Martin, C

Freddy Garcia, SP

It’s raining in New York, and has been all day. Supposed to rain all night too, though word out of the Bronx is that they’re going to try to play. So settle in for a long night, this might be another late one. Whenever the game does start, you can watch on YES locally or MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Update: The game has been postponed, and they’re going to play a doubleheader on Sunday. So yeah, go ahead and use this as your open thread for the night. Talk about whatever you like.

that line-up makes me so happy

  2. Greg says:

Just found this out. Baseball Reference has officially nicknamed David Robertson “Houdini”

    http://www.baseball-reference......da08.shtml

    • Jesse says:

Awesome. I’m surprised that on Hideki Irabu’s (RIP) BR page that his nickname isn’t “Fat pussy toad”, or at least “Fat toad” since there’s probably kids who go on there….

    • Urban says:

I noticed some time this season that they added “IPK” for Ian Patrick Kennedy.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I never saw IPK used anywhere but on RAB. I never heard Ian Kennedy refer to himself as IPK.

Was this an RAB creation that eventually caught on with the general media?

  3. Jesus Freak says:

P Gammons (Theo’s mouthpiece) went Dan Patrick’s show and said Tito’s future is on the line in these last 6 games.

Poor Tito. He’s the scapegoat for Theo backing up the Brinks truck to DiceK, JD Drew, Lackey, Jenks, and Crawford.

  4. J.R. says:

That is a truly awesome lineup.

  5. Kramerica Industries says:

    Fuck Boston.

The 0-6 home record cannot be atoned for, but they can do what every other Red Sox opponent has done this month, and beat their skulls in. If the O’s can, so can the Yankees.

  6. Jesus Freak says:

It’s Always Sunny in Boston per the hilarious Peter Gammons parody twitter feed.

    http://twitter.com/#!/FakePeteGammons

    • Urban says:

I only recently discovered Fake Peter Gammons, and he’s great. What’s funny is he only has about one hundred followers, and I swear half of them are media members, including a number from ESPN, so they must find the parody hits close to home!

      • Jesus Freak says:

Interstingly(and telling), rank and file Red Sox fans were making fun of Gammons’ long time routine of hyping up Red Sox prospects.

        http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....in_th.html

Gammons has long been the “Baghdad Bob” of Red Sox farm system, but it was still stunningly hilarious to find out that Gammons had labeled then Boston prospect Calr Pavano the next Don Drysdale.

  7. Bill says:

I live in the Bronx. It’s not raining where I’m at.

  8. Cy Pettitte says:

Sunday doubleheader. nice, that really screws over any hope of BOS lining up the pitchers if they even make the playoffs.

  9. Greg says:

Game is off. DH on Sunday

  10. StanfordBen says:

Man, that lineup makes me smile. Also, I guess it’s a preview of the postseason lineup vs. lefties, which is pretty sweet.

  11. Jesse says:

So does this thread turn into an Open Thread?

  12. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I sure hope that the Sunday night game won’t be blacked out, ESPN isn’t even doing a game that day

  13. Jesus Freak says:

Boston was complaining that they didn’t want to start their “Ace” to have him lost to a rain delay after 3 innings.

Sure. I get it. But would MLB have done that for any other team.

    • Stuckey says:

      Good gracious.

The Yankees finished 8 games in front of the Red Sox in 2009, who didn’t make it out of the first round, and the Yankees went on to win the series.

Last year the Yankees finished 6 games in front, the Sox didn’t make the play-offs and the Yanks went to game 6 of the LCS.

This year the Yankees clinched the division, are going to clinch home field presently and the Sox are fighting for their play-off lives, and this rain out hurts, not helps.

How many years is it going to take for some of you to realize whatever it is you perceive MLB, the Umpires and the media-at-large is doing to favor the Red Sox, it’s having the opposite effect?

Whatever the entire world is doing to help the Sox, keep it up, I say!

      • Jerome S. says:

Media favoring the Red Sox =/= helping them win. It’s a sure thing some institutions have a definite Sox bias. But something more conspiratorial, like MLB or the umpires? I’m not sure anyone is suggesting that, and it would be crazy to do so.

  14. Stevesy says:

Word from the Rays broadcast is that game is postponed, double-header Sunday. 1:00 and 6:30 starts.

  15. Cy Pettitte says:

David Price looks like a man on a mission

  16. Yankeefan91 Arod Fan says:

im Confused so what time is this game played on sunday 1 or 6

  17. Jesse says:

So Hughes threw catch today and will probably throw a bullpen session tomorrow according to Girardi. Really hoping this guy can get healthy, pitch well, and start game(s) in the postseason.

  18. Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

The Os are in giant killer mode again tonight.

  19. Kramerica Industries says:

I don’t like the DH so much.

Sure, it may further screw over the Sox, but I had already planned on a Friday full of baseball. The Rays are still an option, but if the Yankees aren’t playing, I feel like there’s better shit to do.

    Improvisation time!

  20. The Lazzeri Scooter says:

So, Noesi is going in one of the starts on Sunday right? All, I ask of Joey G. is not to start Burnett in this weekend and push him back to Monday.

Seriously, a rotation of Chief, SuperNova & UltraNoesi this weekend would go a long way further in keeping most Yankee fans content with our chances of winning, or sweeping, the series. Much more than whatever lineup he posts because anyone not named Lester or Becket should be no problem for the B or C lineup.

Just keep tonigh’s lineup for Lester tommorrow. Especially look foward to the Andrew Jones at-bats ;-)

  21. Tom says:

The rainout punishes Boston if the race remains close…. This now means Lester on 3 days rest in the final game (or Weiland/Miller?)

The double header Sunday also screws Boston in a potential tiebraker game which would mean one of the Sunday starters (Wake/Lackey) on 3 days rest or a guy like Weiland or Miller against probably a damn good pitcher from TB or ANA. (this assumes Lester is going on 3 days rest on the final game of the season if it matters)

  22. Kevin says:

Well, the Rays are officially dead..David Price managed to give up three runs and it doesn’t look like Tampa will be able to rally back from that.

  23. Finster says:

Rays are blowing it. Loosing 3-0

  24. Tom says:

Late game on Sunday will be broadcast on MLBNetwork.

Not sure what it means for local TV/YES network…. but I imagine it will be televised on one of them.

  25. Cuso says:

    Tampa blew it tonight.

  26. Kevin says:

Tampa is dead…up to the Angels now.

  27. Greg says:

Tampa has been done in by the Orioles last week and the Blue Jays right now

    • Urban says:

Yankees kind of did them in, too. So what we’re really finding out is the Red Sox are so bad right now that they’re the team that allowed the Rays back into the race. It had little to do with Tampa.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

        Basically.

The Rays are 12-9 this month. That’s hardly earth-shattering for a team trying to pull off a historic September comeback.

      • Greg says:

Yea I know. But the Rays needed to win a few against the O’s last week while the Red SOx were still losing.

  28. Greg says:

Thinking about it, David Price has had a dissappoing season by his standards. ERA right now is .6 runs higher and will go higher after this. 22 more runs given up than last year.

  29. Kramerica Industries says:

    Terrible game by Tampa tonight.

Weak, terrible game against a team they have dominated this season.

  30. Kevin says:

The chances Boston was going to miss out on the post season was next to nothing..all they have to do is win two of their next games and they’re in.

  31. Widget says:

Toronto seems to be playing the role of spoiler well. They put a hurt on both the Rays and Angels chances at the wild card.

  32. Pat D says:

    Anyone go see Moneyball?

    • Jesse says:

I am on Thursday. No baseball that day.

    • Montero's Mojo says:

Yeah. It’s good. Seemed to glorify the Red Sox at one point, however, which I wasn’t all too pleased with. Solid movie. 82-86. Could’ve implemented a better score, though. Scratch that, could’ve used one period. Parts of the picture came across as flat, in my opinion, because there was no music backing it up. The Social Network succeeded in much regard, I believe, because of the Trent Reznor original score. This particular Aaron Sorkin piece could’ve benefited from a similar taste of tunage. Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt were both solid, but as my non-baseball-fanatic girlfriend will tell you, she couldn’t get into it as much as she would’ve preferred, if only because of the subject content. Definitely worth checking out. Either this or Drive.

      • Jesse says:

Did they glorify the Yankees at all? Because the Yankees did try this same theory by adding guys with high OBP’s before Billy Beane you know.

        • Accent Shallow says:

It’s not that “OBP is a good way to build a team”, it’s that “salaries are often still based on high BAs, and players with comparable or better OBPs are available for cheap.”

Which is not quite the same thing.

        • Stratman9652 says:

I’m sure a bunch of teams were adding guys with high OBP, they would be crazy not to, but Billy Beane took it to new levels.

        • Montero's Mojo says:

No. All they said was that they essentially “stole” Giambi and that their payroll (via the 2001 ALDS) was $120 million vs. the David-esque $40 million of the Athletics. Haha, but they did shit on Jeremy Giambi a bit, which was pretty funny.

  33. Kevin says:

I’m sure all of us have visions of the 2004 ALCS and 2007 ALCS where the Sox came back from huge margins to win it all.
I don’t see that happening here. There are too many injuries for them to overcome.

  34. Jesse says:

Hahaha I saw this from the fake Joe Girardi Twitter account just now:
