Game 160: Bittersweet

By

Just as charming inside as it is outside. (AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)

The end of the regular season is very bittersweet. No one wants to see it end because man, it’s baseball and we don’t want it to go away. But then again, wooo postseason baseball! This game means nothing to the Yankees but everything to the Rays. Just sit back and enjoy it. The games will get a lot more stressful in a few days.  Here’s the lineup…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Robinson Cano, 2B
Alex Rodriguez, DH
Jorge Posada, 1B
Eric Chavez, 3B
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, RF – have fun with the roof, Eddie
Brett Gardner, LF

Hector Noesi, SP

First pitch is scheduled for a little after 7pm ET and can  be seen on YES. Enjoy.

That place is miserable. At least the outside has palm trees.

  2. bexarama says:

    Hit it to right, Tampa.

  3. Dagra says:

    Where is Jesus???

  4. Cy Pettitte says:

Putting Eduardo in RF in a dome is hilarious

I’m thinking we have a tie for the WC after tonight.

  5. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

The over/under for misplays in RF by Nunez is 3.

  6. Guest says:

Pretty strong lineup for a meaningless game. Plus, Joe said the “right handed lineup” will start Wednesday against Price. If that’s the case, Francona should send Girardi a nice bottle of wine.

The Yankees right handed lineup is sick. So sick that, even though I know its always dumb to root to face a particular team, because you just might get them (see 2006 Tigers). But I would love to see the Yanks play the Rangers and all their lefty starters.

  7. thetruth says:

someone talk me off the ledge and tell me we didnt just give Boston some life with that win last night. I dont want shades of 2004 when they got woken up and never lost again

    • Guest says:

This post shows that, even with 26 championships preceding it, 2004 was as scarring for many Yanks fans (including me) as Buckner in ’86 was for Sox fans. It was so jarring, it makes irrational fears seem rational.

      • FachoinaNYY says:

Yeah 04 was THAT bad, I completely agree.

I see what thetruth is saying, but honestly if that happens it will just be the narrative that is used, it is impossible to say that last nights game changed anything one way or another.

The narrative will always be tailored to fit what happens in reality.

  8. FachoinaNYY says:

I am very much looking forward to the day Montero is starting regardless of the handed-ness of the opposing starter…

    Kid is LEGIT.

  9. Brian S. says:

So is anyone else worried about Gardner? At the end of July his wRC+ was ~120 just like it was last year and he was on pace to finish another fantastic season. Since then he has been dreadful at the plate and now his wRC+ of 104 leaves much to be desired. He remains an elite defender and baserunner but his offensive game this last month and a half has been terrible. Are his struggles all BABIP related or do you guys think that maybe he was due for some regression to his actual skill level?

  10. Sheepmeister says:

So I am watching a foreign channel, the YES announcers were just singing and being weird. Kinda hilarious.

  11. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

wow, that crowd is pathetic even for the Rays.

    • Jesse says:

And to think all of their bandwagon fans will fill the place up IF they make the playoffs.

      • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

funny thing is they couldn’t even fill it for the playoffs last year- they got 35,000 for games 1 and 2 and the capacity was just under 37,000. then for game 5 they got 41,000 with a capacity of nearly 43,000.

        • Jesse says:

My God that’s worse than pathetic. Tampa/St. Petersburg DOES NOT deserve to have a baseball team, especially one that contends. It’d be cool if their franchise was moved to Portland, Oregon, but you know that’ll never happen…

    • Cy Pettitte says:

even more pathetic when you see half them are Yankee fans.

  12. Rey22 says:

I think Noesi’s gonna get a very real shot at a rotation spot next spring. I approve.

    • FachoinaNYY says:

      Nova 2.0?

    • Jetrer says:

probably not, unfortunately, the #4 and #5 spots are somewhat blocked with Hughes and AJ

    • Jesse says:

      CC, Nova, Hughes, Burnett, Noesi?

      • Chen Meng Wang says:

Idk man..that’s four question marks in one rotation
        1. How is Nova going to bounce back from his inning increase?
        2. Is Phil ever going to live up to his name?
        3. AJ Burnett.
        4. Can Noesi survive 30 starts at the MLB level?

        • Mike Axisa says:

Nova’s innings are not an issue. He actually threw more innings last year. Add in the playoffs, and he’ll still be in that 20-30 IP increase range, which isn’t bad.

          • Mike Axisa says:

I should rephrase, not *much*of an issue.

            • Chen Meng Wang says:

Isn’t that right around the suggested increase though? If you can increase the innings 30IP every season of professional ball isn’t that supposed to be ideal?

              • MikeD says:

You’re talking about the Verducci Effect, which has been proven wrong by a number of statistical studies, not to mention talent evaluators and medical personel that are part of MLB teams.

The additional innings Nova gets will also occur in an additional month, so that also needs to be factored in. The workload is spread out over a longer period of time. Think about it. 220 innings over seven months is less taxing than over six months. Verducci doesn’t address any of that.

          • Chen Meng Wang says:

My bad I forgot to add his ML innings to his AAA innings last season lol.

          • Jesse says:

Well either way that’s three question marks in one rotation which is certainly not ideal.

        • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I have a feeling they’ll bring back Garcia and have a competition for the 4th and 5th starter between him, Hughes, Noesi, Warren, Phelps, etc.

        • Jetrer says:

Nova had 187 IP last year, 181.1 so far this year, the innings shouldn’t be an issue, but I agree, at least Plan A wouldn’t have all 4 in the rotation

      • Bill says:

I think that’s the worst case scenario for next year’s rotation. Personally I think Hughes should be a number 4 or 5 starter. He hasn’t shown he can be consistent or healthy for a full season as a starter. Burnett is awful, and I’m not too high on Noesi. I think the Yankees should try to acquire one of Cj Wilson or Yu Darvish. Cj Wilson is a proven starter now and Darvish offers more upside than the current in-house back end of the rotation options. So to summarize, I think the rotation you listed for next year is the worst possible scenario, outside of freak injuries, and it would mean that Cashman wasn’t able to address the only weakness of the team for the second straight offseason for one reason or another.

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

Well as of next season the only starting pitchers under contract are Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes, and AJ Burnett. If we assume that CC’s going to resign and Phil is going to be healthy that leaves one rotation spot open. I think that goes to Wilson/Darvish/who knows.

      • Jetrer says:

they probably will be looking for a #2 again, but it could turn out like last offseason where they don’t get it done and go with quantity over quality, in which case Noesi or one of the other kids might have a shot

        • Chen Meng Wang says:

Idk why but I’d love to see them take a chance on Darvish. We know what Wilson is and that’s a good(not great) lefty, but he’s going to demand a lot of money…Darvish I think could be cheaper over the long term.

          • Jetrer says:

I wouldn’t be shocked if they passed on both and try to get by until the stronger free agent class the next year (Cole Hamels maybe?)

            • Chen Meng Wang says:

Idk, I mean it might be smarter but the Yank’s aren’t the type of team to go 2 straight off seasons with out some kind of significant upgrade.

              • Jetrer says:

true, but they may have enough questions/concerns about both that they would pass if the price got too high
their big signing this offseason could be another LOOGY to not pitch

                • Chen Meng Wang says:

I really hope they pass on Wilson. His numbers are very good, don’t get me wrong…but before last season he’d never thrown more than 130IP in pro ball, he’s already 30, he just gives me bad vibe…

    • MikeD says:

I can see that happening. Noesi, or even one of the other kids in AAA this year, with Noesi being the lead. If both Garcia and Colon leave, I can see the Yankees looking to bring in a starter (such as Wilson if the price is doable) for one of the spots and then giving Noesi a shot at the second.

I can also see Manny taking AJ’s spot about mid-way through the season when the Yankees finally give up on him.

      • Chen Meng Wang says:

Unless Man-Ban absolutely blows away the competition at AAA next year i don’t think there is a chance he sniffs the Bronx before Sept. He might have the biggest upside but I think Warren, Betances, and Noesi are all higher on the depth chart than him right now.

        • MikeD says:

Agreed, although he is a lefty and depending on what happens both in the offseason and then during the season, I can see him being given a shot. Probably unlikely, but if he pitches lights out and there’s a need, I don’t think they’ll be afraid to call him up.

  13. Chen Meng Wang says:

Why isn’t dickerson starting in right?

  14. MikeD says:

Is Jeter hitting .300 a “milestone” that’s important to the Yankees? I can see it important to Jeter as a personal achievement. A nice sounding number, but I don’t see it as a milestone for the Yankees.

    • FachoinaNYY says:

I think that statement is made in terms of what the team/coaching staff would like to see guys do… like they are pulling for the guy.

I guarantee that if, somehow, his personal quest conflicted with the overall benefit of the team, it would be ignored. However, Jeter hitting 300, while largely meaningless overall can be a morale booster for Jeter, and the rest of the team who are no doubt pulling for their brother and captain.

      • MikeD says:

I know, I get it. I think I’m just looking for any reason to pick on Michael Kay. It was his choice of words. Hitting .300 is not really a milestone.

I can see Jeter (and Yankee fans) wanting Jeter to hit .300 since most (myself included) figuring Jeter’s days of hitting .300 were behind him.

He could hit .295 or he could hit .305. He’s already proven he’s not done yet.

  51. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Playoff rotation:

    CC
    Nova
    Garcia
    Noesi

    Yeah, I went there.

  52. Chen Meng Wang says:

Attn Micheal Kay the Post Season rotation is as follows:
    Sabathia
    Nova
    Garcia
    Colon
…it’s probably been that for a while I think. Stop asking.

  53. Chen Meng Wang says:

Please God, if you ever answer a prayer for me let it be: Do NOT let AJ Burnett touch a post season mound. He has done nothing NOTHING to deserve it this season.

  54. Jesse says:

Random Question: I’m just curious, since you’re at the game do you (Mike Axisa) sit in the press box since you write for a big name blog or do you sit in the stands?

  55. MikeD says:

What is Kay’s obsession with AJ being the #3 starter? Garcia will not be in the pen. He’s one of the starters.

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

He’s trying to make something out of nothing using the rotation, which has been a question mark most of the season, to continue talking because to Micheal Kay any moment not spent speaking is a minute wasted.

    • The Big City of Dreams says:

He’s a fan of Aj. Has been for quite some time

  56. Avi says:

    BJ UPTOWN BABY!!

  57. Jesse says:

Woo hooo! I mean, oh crap…

  58. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

BJ wants to go to the playoffs

  59. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Question: Since the Rays hold the tiebreaker, could they request to play a game 163 in Fenway instead of the Trop?

  60. MikeD says:

Oddly conflicted. Usually watching a Yankee game is easy. I know what I want. A Yankee win. Now…

  61. Nuke LaDoosh says:

They played Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” as Girardi came on to remove Noesi…
    Funny.

  62. Tyrion Lannister says:

Hector’s doing a great job. Keep it up. Give them the lead and don’t look back.

  63. Avi says:

Valdes is ok for this spot but where’s proctor??

  64. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Every single game against the Rays they debate weather Johnny Damon is a HOFer, and every single time Kay says he’s in if he gets 3,000 hits.

    • Jerome S says:

If they let Damon in and he has three-thousand hits, it will be one of the worse HOF picks in history but I won’t be too mad; Damon was a good player for a long time, definitely never great but solid production over many years. In my mind, not the worst HOFer ever.

Now, if he doesn’t even pick up 3,000, it’ll be a travesty.

      • Jesse says:

Not to be a smartass or anything, but let’s say for the sake of argument he gets injured and has to end his career while he’s at 2,999 hits. Is he a Hall of Famer then?

        • Jerome S says:

          No.
          3000!

What I’m saying is, unless he has some wicked 8-WAR season in 2012, he’s not a Hall of Famer by my standards even if he gets 3,000 hits. However, as we have learned, the BBWAA are batshit insane, and they have much different standards. If they let him in on the grounds that he has 3,000 hits, it’s understandable; not agreeable, but understandable. Damon’s been good enough for a long time.

    • MannyGeee says:

Sterling just got on his soapbox about the same thing. Dunno, having a hard time buying it. nice player and all, but not positive about Damon being Hall-Worthy

  65. Chen Meng Wang says:

Markakis just had a MONSTER AB against Beckett resulting in a walk and of course ball four was over the plate according to the NESN broadcasters.

  66. Xstar7 says:

    Johnny Damon = clutch

  77. Nuke LaDoosh says:

Mike, Have you ever thought of setting up Game Threads as “chat rooms” instead of “bulletin board” style? Wondering if that would be doable for a group as big as this one.

  80. MannyGeee says:

well. that sucks. only thing worse than giving up a homer, is giving one up to a scrub.

  81. Delaware - Ralph says:

Just noticed the bottom of the ESPN.com Yankee-Rays boxscore gives the wind. In the Trop the wind is apparently -1 MPH interesting… didn’t know that was possible… I may suggest simply putting N/A or Dome instead.

    http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/.....=310926130

Also very conflicted tonight, not really a big fan of this,

  82. MikeD says:

So what do most Yankee fans think Posada will do next year? We know he’s not coming back to the Yankees but will he retire?

My opinion, as much as he’s loved being a Yankee, I don’t think he has any intention of hanging it up just yet, and considering his .270/.350/.470 line against righties, I can see him getting a shot somewhere as a lefty DH, part-time 1B’man, relief catcher.

His fire to play will outweigh his desire to wear only a Yankee uniform. There’s also a potentially profitable reason for him to give it a shot (beyond the salary he’ll get). If Posada can stick around another couple seasons and reach 300 career HRs, it will improve his HOF chances, and that’s worth a lot of money. Being a HOFer is very profitable.

    • Jose the Satirist says:

      He will retire.

    • Bill says:

I would hate for him to play for another team. I hope he retires.

    • Stratman9652 says:

Jorge’s son also has health problems. If Andy Pettitte’s (as far as I know) healthy family drew him away from the game, then I can only imagine the pull Jorge feels. I think it is possible people over-estimate his desire to remain in the game.

      • Ed says:

I don’t think Pettitte’s family was the reason he retired. He talked about retiring to be home with them for about 5 years before he finally did it. He’d miss them during the season, then as the offseason continued his desire to keep playing would kick in.

I think Pettitte realized that age was wearing on him. He had progressively more health issues as the years went on, and I think he wanted to retire before things got worse.

  83. Xstar7 says:

Fuck you, Desmond Jennings. I want to see Derek Jeter hit .300.

  84. Cy Pettitte says:

god damn, Jennings. wow, that was sick.

    • MikeD says:

His defensive stats, at least so far in his early career, haven’t been as good as I thought. That, however, was one hell of a catch.

  85. Tyrion Lannister says:

Os have tied it at 2!

  86. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    yay O’s tie it up.

  87. Jesse says:

    Tie game in Baltimore!

  88. Chen Meng Wang says:

Chris Davis doesn’t have even one shit to give about the Sox’s postseason aspirations.

  89. MannyGeee says:

2 all in Baltimore. Beckett had settled down for a bit but is back to looking decidedly mediocre.

  90. Cy Pettitte says:

O’s need to bury them Sox here.

  91. Jesse says:

    Buck Funts.

Free outs here! Get ya free outs here!

  92. Cy Pettitte says:

he walked Angle. oh my god. please pound him Hardy.

  93. Tyrion Lannister says:

Bases loaded, 1 out vs Beckett in the 5th. 80 pitches thrown by Beckett. FINISH HIM!

  94. Bill says:

This ump has been squeezing the Yankees pitchers all night.

  95. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Os have bases loaded against Beckett, they better put up a big number here.

  96. Jesse says:

Bases loaded in Baltimore, Hardy at the plate. 2-2 tie.

  97. MannyGeee says:

Beckett has walked the Bases loaded, one out in Baltimore. And Beckett is goddam ugly…

A weak pop up and a strike out. That’s the best the Os could do against a reeling Beckett. BEAT BECKETT! GET HIM OUT AND GET INTO THAT TIRED BULLPEN!

  113. Chen Meng Wang says:

    …totally not cool BlUE.

  114. mlbnyy35 says:

    What just happened with Martin?

  115. Bill says:

I hate umpires with a passion. This dickhead has been squeezing the Yankees pitchers all night, and when Martin tells him something about it without showing him up, he picks a fight with him and ejects him. Fucking pathetic.

  116. Cy Pettitte says:

The Joe West Show. Starting Joe West as Joe West.

Don’t forget to stick around after the game to purchase his first feature length CD.

  117. Hummingbird S. says:

love umps that think they are bigger than the game

  118. mustang says:

    WOW!!!!

    Romine !

Montero the catcher takes another hit!

  119. Rey22 says:

Damn, you seriously couldn’t put Montero to catch? Romine caught 14 innings last night, plus it’s a meaningless game, why not give him a shot?

  120. Hall and Nokes says:

Even the Rays’ TV guys are beside themselves at that one. (I don’t know why I’m watching the Rays feed. Guess I miss Dewayne Staats.)

  121. Mickey Scheister says:

I’ve never seen an ump pick a fight THAT noticeably. Wow, just wow.

  122. mlbnyy35 says:

Romine getting a lot of work in at catcher all of a sudden.

  123. MannyGeee says:

Wow… Vlad just got hit 2587. most by any Dominican born player. who knew!

  124. MikeD says:

Didn’t the umpires get their asses kicked years ago when they went on strike. How is it that the new umpires union seems to have more power to get away with this nonsense.

  125. Tyrion Lannister says:

Atrocious throw by Salty. Vlad safe at 2nd on a SB attempt. Runner on 2nd, 1 out. Go Os!

  126. Monteroisdinero says:

Gotta chuckle at Mike’s pregame observation of Posada and Montero taking extra catching practice. Perfect opportunity for Montero to catch. Sad.

  127. JT says:

    Vlad steals 2nd!

  128. Monteroisdinero says:

Gardy looks at it all the way and then gives up on it. I hate meaningless games.

  129. Erica says:

    Nice strikeout, Phil.

  130. MannyGeee says:

Aceves has been warming for about 40 minues waiting for the eventual Beckett implosion

  131. Monteroisdinero says:

Yanks looking like a loss. Think I’ll go get some chowduh and watch the Sawx.

  132. Cy Pettitte says:

    3-2 O’s!!!!!1

  133. Tyrion Lannister says:

    3-2 Os! 3-2 Os!!!!!!!!!

  134. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    3-2 O’s!!!

  135. DERP says:

    HOF CHris Davis

  136. Chen Meng Wang says:

Let me say it again: Chris motha fucken Davis doesn’t have one shit to give about the Red Sox making the playoffs.

  137. Jetrer says:

    yay O’s

  138. Crime Dog says:

Any chance Kontos sneaks onto the postseason roster?

  139. DERP says:

    LOLOLOL Ellsbury

  140. Hall and Nokes says:

O’s take the lead. Fuck you, Proctor!

  141. Jetrer says:

    nice catch Jacoby
    lmfao

  142. Cy Pettitte says:

IN THE PARK HR FOR ANDINO!!!!!!

  143. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Hahahahahahaah Ellsbury!!! 6-2 ORIOLES!!!

  144. Grit for Brains says:

ELLSBURY DROPS THE BALL! 3 RUNS IN

  145. Tyrion Lannister says:

ELLSBURY DROPPED THE BALL! HE DROPPED THE BALL! 6-2 OS!!!!!

  146. Monteroisdinero says:

    Salty!!!

  147. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Ellsbury…more like FAILsbury.

  148. DERP says:

    OMG INSIDE THE PARK

  149. Hummingbird S. says:

The Red Sox, just wow… inside the park HR

  150. Hall and Nokes says:

    Andino MVP

  151. MannyGeee says:

ELOLsbury and SaltaLOLamaccia… they’re FAAAAAAANTASTIC. Inside the park HR looks an awful lot like a coffin nail to me.

  152. AndrewYF says:

So much for Ellsbury for MVP. I wonder if his UZR will actually be reduced by 2 whole runs.

  153. Tyrion Lannister says:

GOODBYE RED SOX IF THESE TWO SCORES HOLD UP! GOODBYE RED SOX!!!!!!

  154. Pants Lendel-stros. says:

And that’s your A.L Mvp folks.

    Jacoby Ellsbury.

  155. Monteroisdinero says:

Jim Palmer: Andino can do it all. Really?

  156. Jesus Freak says:

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  157. mustang says:

    There is ESPN MVP Ellsbury!!!!!!

  158. Tom says:

In all seriousness, props to Beckett for not “Lackey’ing” up when he saw the ball come out.

Lackey might have fallen and gone into the full Platoon pose after seeing that.

  159. Hall and Nokes says:

Granderson catches that with his bare hand.

  160. Karl Krawfid says:

    Robert Bambino

  161. Jesse says:

Hahahaha I wonder what Gammons thinks about Ellsbury’s MVP chances are now!

    /BlamingEllsburyForNotMakingASpectacularCatch’d

  162. Jesus Freak says:

    RUN PREVENTION!

  163. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Ellsbury sent the Sox to the playoffs last night and he might have knocked them out tonight, lol.

  164. Monteroisdinero says:

Yanks have 5 catchers possibly better than Salty behind the plate.

  165. Jesus Freak says:

    GREATEST COLLAPSE EVAH!

  166. Jesse says:

Ah Ken Singleton is finally learning about modern day technology. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll learn that the Wins stat really doesn’t mean shit.

  167. Avi says:

I’ve never rooted this hard for the Yankees to lose.
Let’s go.. YANKEES SUCK.. YANKEES SUCK!!

    • Tom says:

And the beauty of expanded rosters is that you can root for guys you hope you will never see again to suck.

(I was actually hoping for a good outing and then the Valdes/Proctor/Laffey to take care of things.)

  168. MannyGeee says:

HAHAHAHHA. that was too funny. when talking about the Sox-O’s score, Suzy Waldman has informed us that people were actually cheering in TB over the insid the parker…

“You know what that means, John… There are ACTUALLY Rays fans here!”

best line of the year for Waldman

  169. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Haha people on OTM are blaming Francona for Ellsbury’s fail.

  170. Jesus Freak says:

I hope Francona like managing the White Sox, next year.

  171. mlbnyy35 says:

Up until Saturday, I didn’t think the collapse could actually happen, and then when we pounded Lester, I thought it was real. After the Sox edged us out last night, and took a one-game lead with three to go, with a schedule of three versus the O’s, I thought they could edge it out. Now, if the scores hold, I’ll actually believe it. Wow. Tomorrow morning, we could actually have a tie for the Wild Card.

    Eight outs to go, Orioles.

  172. Tyrion Lannister says:

Why is Ron Washington starting CJ Wilson tonight when he’d have to turn around and pitch on 3 days rest on Friday? Would we rather face Verlander/Fister or the Rangers starters on short rest? Root for the Rangers to lose.

  173. Sarah says:

Time to roll out the Scranton kids. Give everyone but ARod the rest of the game off.

  174. Nuke LaDoosh says:

    Nice to see Hooters

    … advertising behind home plate

  175. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Now a fan runs on the field in Baltimore and according to Remy and Orsillo, no guards or anything are going after him.

  176. Rey22 says:

I’ve become such a fan of over the monster lately. Such optimism in their comments. It’s hilarious to watch.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

anyone who tries to be positive is shot down, I love it.

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

Wow, are they serious? “Agreed, blow it up, start over.” To which somebody responded “Keep only Pedroia and Gonzalez.” The somebody suggested they bring PapelBitch back and got “Nope, nobody else
I don’t mind a couple years of futility if we can rebuild the right way.” I can honestly say I’ve never been this fairweather with the Yankees…

  177. Nuke LaDoosh says:

Kontos make the team next year?

  178. Hummingbird S. says:

now that we could use Proctor for 3 innings, Joe doesnt use him…

  179. Monteroisdinero says:

Chowduh tasting very good this evening. I have leftovers for the next two nights. Delicious this time of year.

  180. Tom Zig says:

Let the cards fall where they may. The only pleasure I seek is Boston missing the playoffs. If we face Detroit, I don’t care. If we face Texas, I don’t care. All I know is that the New York Yankees are the best team in the American League.

    • Monteroisdinero says:

Beating the Sox for the division great.
      Sox not making playoffs greater.

Great solace for us no matter what happens in October.

  181. Jesse says:

This is too funny how people at Over the Monster react:

    http://www.overthemonster.com/.....s#78535831

  182. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Beckett against the orioles in september: 12 runs in 13.1 IP.

  183. Jesse says:

My God Aceves’ arm is going to fall off eventually. I hope they bring in Papelbitch just because.

  184. MikeD says:

When the hell was the last time a manager was traded?

  185. Jesus Freak says:

The Associated Press is reporting mass suicides have just occurred at ESPN headquarters.

  186. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Fangraphs has Luis Ayala at a 4.3 fWAR.

    I <3 made up stats.

  187. MikeD says:

Jeter’s bid to hit .300 is taking a BABIP reaming this game.

  188. flamingo says:

I don’t care if you win, Tampa. BUT I WANT JETER TO END THE YEAR AT .300.

  189. Sarah says:

I’ve never been so happy to see Big Game James come up big for the Rays.

  190. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

O’s failpen better not blow this.

  191. Tyler says:

Who would Boston pitch if they had to play a one game playoff with the Rays?

  192. Hall and Nokes says:

Pedro Ports isn’t looking too solid for BAL.

  193. Tyrion Lannister says:

Hold them, Os. Don’t blow this like you normally would.

  194. Greg says:

Red Sox have loaded the bases with one out in the eighth

  195. Monteroisdinero says:

So we head to the playoffs with a 4 game losing streak?

    • Nuke LaDoosh says:

      I’d be fine with it.

    • MikeD says:

Unlikely, but possible. Really wouldn’t matter to the Yankees.

It’s probably likely the Yankees take one of the games in Tampa. Something usually happens. Could even still happen in this game.

What I’m hoping is the Red Sox end the season on a four-game losing streak. Three to Baltimore and one to the Rays in the playoff.

  196. first time lawng time says:

John Lackey divorcing his wife who has cancer…wow.

  197. Stratman9652 says:

Cameraman sucks. That looked like a no-doubter.

  198. Tyrion Lannister says:

Nice pitch there by Strop to get Salty. Now for the GOAT Scutaro.

  199. Jesse says:

    Racist strikes out!

  200. Naved says:

    Brackmonster is coming in!

  201. Greg says:

    Salty K’s Two down.

  202. Monteroisdinero says:

Salty with an epic game. Brackman coming in!

  203. Hall and Nokes says:

LaRussa giving away outs down 2 in the 7th….

  204. Greg says:

    O’s are one inning away.

  205. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Thank you, Scutaro for grounding out so I can see Brackman pitch.

  206. Monteroisdinero says:

    The fighting Showalters are pumped!

  207. Hall and Nokes says:

    Ports!!!

  208. Cy Pettitte says:

bases loaded 1 out and the sox get no runs. this is too good.

  209. Sarah says:

Is it Jim Johnson time in Baltimore yet?

  210. Jesse says:

My God Showalter is looking like a genius with that Wild Card prediction a month ago. Totally forgot about that.

  211. Hummingbird S. says:

Brackman’s breaking ball looks pretty flat. Not a lot of movement.

  212. Karl Krawfid says:

    Salty just died.

  213. Montero's Mojo says:

Still none too excited that Granderson’s heading into the postseason on a cold streak. I could say, here’s hoping he heats up, but I know that that’ll make no difference whatsoever.

  214. MikeD says:

I don’t know if I could see Bobby Valentine meshing with the Red Sox front office team.

  215. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

The Red Sox getting Valentine would be doing Yankee fans the biggest favor they could do with regards to a manager.

  216. Sarah says:

Now Salty is hurt? Wow, things really aren’t going the Sox way.

  217. Jesse says:

    Ryan Lavahhhhhhhhhnway in for Boston….

  218. DERP says:

Salty out. Just missed catching the pitch and it hit him in the collarbone area.

  219. Monteroisdinero says:

See that Nunez? Brackman should be able to throw harder seems to me. Doesn’t have best mechanics to take advantage of his size. Imagine what he could do with a DRob stride!

  220. Rey22 says:

Now go quietly 1-2-3 in the 9th, k?
This message goes for both Yanks and Sox today.

  221. Sarah says:

Jorge with the GIDP. Nice work!

  222. Hummingbird S. says:

I hope this game makes Girardi think twice before playing Posada come playoffs time. But I know it wont.

  223. Karl Krawfid says:

O’s broadcast had an epic call on that Andino inside the parker.

  224. Andy says:

What’s with Alex’s new bat? I can’t remember him ever using anything but a black one.

  225. Widget says:

Crap, Farnsworth is in, he may mess this up.

  226. Chen Meng Wang says:

I hope montero goes yard here then Farnsy gets the last out.

  227. Stratman9652 says:

One of the weekend writers, I think it was Stephen, wrote that it was pretty much impossible to hate the Rays. After this year I see what he meant, I still can’t find a good reason to dislike this team, even when they win.

  228. Greg says:

Johnson hits Ellsbury then Balks him to second.

  229. Rey22 says:

Never been so happy to see the Yankees lose in my life.

  230. JT says:

I notice Montero strikes out alot with that 1 handed follow through. It is weird that a player switches between different follow throughs.

    • Monteroisdinero says:

His follow through is with 2 hands and his strikeouts have been going down and will continue to do so. ELITE HITTER.

    • MikeD says:

While I wouldn’t expect Montero to develop into a power hitter that also made very good contact, like a Pujols or a DiMaggio, I can see him developing much better contact skills the more he learns MLB pitchers and styles.

He seems to adjust well and his swing isn’t crazy.

      He’ll be fine.

    • Bill says:

It’s because he’s out in front on those pitches. Jeter does the same thing sometimes. The best way to explain it is that the batter is so out in front that his bottom/front hand goes forward while the top/back hand comes off and stays back. It also could be that he realizes the pitch is a ball mid-swing and he tries to just make any kind of contact that he can. You know, kind of like how Brett Gardner swings 90% of the time.

      • Avi says:

Yep. Totally agree with Bill’s analysis. He only let’s go with the top hand when he’s fooled by the pitched and is swinging over it. He’s “reaching” for it.

  231. Greg says:

    Crawford grounds out 1 down.

  232. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

2 outs away from an AL WC tie.

  233. Monteroisdinero says:

Would have preferred 3 more abs from Jesus but you can’t overcome Joe G.

  234. Jesus Freak says:

    From Pete Abraham:

A fan just ran on the field in Baltimore and flipped off the Red Sox dugout and security did virtually nothing. A few cops just stood and watched.

  235. Nuke LaDoosh says:

oh good, the Sux are teasing their fans here in the 9th

  236. Greg says:

Pedroia singles in Ellsbury 6-3 O’s

  237. Jesse says:

Wow. Please don’t choke this Baltimore.

  238. Tyrion Lannister says:

Damn, Ortiz got lucky there. Sox have tying run at the plate. Hold em, Os!

  239. Chen Meng Wang says:

God damnit Orioles, if I just spent the last three hours rooting against MY TEAM and rooting for you, just for you to lose I swear I’m gonna be furious.

  240. Gonzo says:

The Sox are trying to take the MVP away from Andino! Not cool.

  241. Greg says:

    Ortiz singles tying run up

  242. ArchStanton says:

Orioles gonna blow this thing, huh?

  243. Widget says:

    Double play please, thanks.

  244. DERP says:

    One more out

  245. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    c’mon O’s. one more out.

  246. Monteroisdinero says:

    HeGon!

  247. Greg says:

    Gonzalez flies out two down

  248. Chen Meng Wang says:

Oh My God, this must gut wrenching for Sox fans…I love it.

  249. DERP says:

    Jim Johnson…stud

  250. Bill says:

And Boston’s Wild Card lead is gone :)

  251. Greg says:

We have a tie atop the AL Wild Card

  252. Chen Meng Wang says:

There is a TIE in the AL Wild Card.

  253. Jetrer says:

    tied up
    lmfao

  254. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Your AL WC leaders the TAMPA BAY RAYS!!

  255. ArchStanton says:

    Wild card tied….

  256. Jesse says:

    AL EAST TIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  257. Dela G says:

    WOOOO ORIOLES WIN!

  258. Monteroisdinero says:

You guys ready to pahk some cahs?

  259. Tyrion Lannister says:

The wildcard lead is now GONE! Boston and Tampa tied. Tampa has Hellickson and Price lined up against a team that has nothing to play for. It’s over for the Sox.

  260. Avi says:

    YIPEE YAYO KAHYAY MOTHER F*CKER.
This is the best night of the season!

  261. Greg says:

    In your dreams Larkin

  262. Rey22 says:

What a month for the Boston LOL Sox

  263. Xstar7 says:

Lol, the guys at OTM are jumping on the Tigers bandwagon now!

    http://www.overthemonster.com/.....s#78545522

  264. Pasqua says:

Fuck it, I’ll say it: I’d rather see the Sox make it with their obnoxious fanbase than the Rays make it with their non-existent one.

Seriously, Tampa? You start the night one game out of a playoff spot after a completely unfathomable run, and you don’t even fucking show up to the stadium?

  265. Avi says:

Oh how I wish the Yanks would’ve tried to win last..

  266. Chen Meng Wang says:

wow, they just dropped a number on MLBN the Sox are 1-19 in September when scoring >12 runs.

  267. Ethan says:

September- best month of the year! :)

  268. Sarah says:

But really, I wish everyone would stop acting like the injuries are the only reason for the Sox meltdown. They had the chance to acquire better pitching over the summer and they didn’t. Stop defending poor decision making by management MLBN (and Steve Berthiaume at ESPN).

    • Greg says:

Berthiaume has actually criticized the free agancy decisions by the Red Sox along with the injuries

      • Sarah says:

        This is true.

And to ESPN’s credit, Keith Law and Eric Karabell have been very critical of management’s decisions this summer.

        • Avi says:

          Which ones?

          • Sarah says:

Mostly the failure to find a better starting pitcher on the trade market than Bedard. They pointed out that the Sox could’ve acquired Wandy on waivers, or gone through with the Harden deal instead of Bedard, or looked for someone like Bart or Freddy.

    • MikeD says:

They’ve been hurt by injuries. Yet this collapse is historic. It goes beyond just injuries. Their hitters are collapsing the last week.

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

      So…
      Arod/Youkilis
      Hughes/Buckholoz(different points of the season)
      Burnett/Lackey
      Soriano/Jenks
      MLB East Champs/3rd Place?

      • Sarah says:

        Exactly.

Also, they knew DiceK wasn’t a sure thing but they didn’t look for a Freddy/Bart in the off season, or really during the trading season this summer.

    • Bill says:

Even so they’re still way too good a team (on paper at least) to go 6-19 in a month. The Red Sox groupies in the media have predictably turned into Red Sox apologists.

  269. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

hey, it looks like the Braves are also gonna blow a huge WC lead…

  270. ArchStanton says:

The Card have tied the Astros and are ready to move into a tie for the NL Wild Card. So why is baseball going to have two wild cards again?

  271. Monteroisdinero says:

Would love a thread on Brackman’s mechanics. To me, he seems to short arm the ball and with his arm and leg length that is saying something.

  272. Sarah says:

From Dave Schoenfield: “Just in case … assuming Lester does start Wed, likely tiebreaker Ps: Jeff Niemann (or Matt Moore!) vs. Wakefield/Lackey on 3 days’ rest.”

  273. JobaWockeeZ says:

If the Yankees could only hit John Lackey yesterday I could have enjoyed some media panic…

    • MikeD says:

You’re not seeing panic right now?

Even if the Red Sox win the next two games, the Yankees have to win a game, and who knows what will happen on Wednesday. That was the reason for Joe Girardi’s comments earlier.

The best chance for a Yankee win is tomorrow’s game if Bartolo is on his game. I want Bartolo to pitch well, but…

  274. Karl Krawfid says:

Braves and Cards could be tied soon.

    What a month.

  275. mlbnyy35 says:

The collapse is now complete. The Red Sox no longer control their own destiny.

  276. Bill says:

The Rays have tied the Red Sox int the wild card, the Cardinals are about to do the same to the Braves, and Ozzie Guillen will be traded to the Marlins. What a wacky night in baseball.

  277. Karl Krawfid says:

    Russ Martin lol

  278. MikeD says:

Well, at least Logan Morrison has to worry about using Twitter. He now has a manager (and his son) who uses it more!

  279. Sarah says:

    More great comments:

“Adrian Gonzalez went far enough to say that the Yankees would be ‘playing with fire’ if they ‘let up on the gas pedal,’ even for the final three games after clinching the American League East and home field in the playoffs during the last week.

‘If any team goes into a series and plays not to win, it can hurt you,’ he said. ‘All ballplayers know that. You go into the playoffs and you may not be able to just turn it on again.’”

How does AGon know so much about the playoffs?

  280. Monteroisdinero says:

If I was the umpire and a catcher asked me if I stretched before the game and I seemed a little tight I would be pissed. A warning would be given-not an ejection.

  281. Chen Meng Wang says:

Wow the girl from MLBN reporting from Camden Yards is really hot…and she did an entire recap with messing up once. I’m in love.

  282. Avi says:

The Red Sox are paying roughly $84,000,000.00 to Lackey, Crawford, Drew, Dice-k*, Cameron and Jenks this year. Which is more than the entire payroll of 13 teams: the Astros, A’s, Blue jays, Brewers, D-backs, Indians, Marlins, Nationals, Padres, Pirates, Reds, Rockies and Royals.
Those small market gritty grinders with the genius GM.. I LOVE IT!

*I prorated the $50MM posting fee for Dice-K over the 6 years of his contract. It’s actually more when you consider they had to pay it upfront in one lump sum instead of over 6 years.

  283. Foghorn Leghorn says:

how the hell did the Sox get to this point where they can’t plug two holes in the rotation with anything decent? they are scouring the market for starters for these last two games.

  284. Paul O'neill's Batting Helmet says:

This from OTM after dozen of hateful and disgusting posts about the Rays fans and their blog:

“This blog is known for class with an occasional spat”

You keep telling yourselves that Sox fans. I guess by “occasional” they mean “frequent.” Unfortunately, in reality, our arch rivals are not done. Yes, they completed the collapse to drop into a tie, but they can still eke their way in somehow. And I for one would rather the (arguably) best team in the AL from May-August to sit this one out so they don’t even get a chance to redeem themselves in a short series.
