Game 160: Bittersweet
ByThe end of the regular season is very bittersweet. No one wants to see it end because man, it’s baseball and we don’t want it to go away. But then again, wooo postseason baseball! This game means nothing to the Yankees but everything to the Rays. Just sit back and enjoy it. The games will get a lot more stressful in a few days. Here’s the lineup…
Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Robinson Cano, 2B
Alex Rodriguez, DH
Jorge Posada, 1B
Eric Chavez, 3B
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, RF – have fun with the roof, Eddie
Brett Gardner, LF
Hector Noesi, SP
First pitch is scheduled for a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

That place is miserable. At least the outside has palm trees.
Hit it to right, Tampa.Where is Jesus???
This is going to get asked every single game he doesn’t play in, isn’t it?
Yep.
And rightfully so in a game where we are hoping to lose and had no real importance (see fun) for watching.
We have to get it all in now because this won’t happen next yr.
Girardi’s binder takes offense…
The 21 year old kid DH’d both games yesterday. Therefore, he can’t play today. It’s science.
The above is dumb, frustated snark. Somebody else was going to “get a DH day” today no matter what and making Montero catch after playing in two games after a long flight is a bit much after a long flight when the Yanks have no reason to push anyone in terms of playing time.
It makes sense not to start him. It’s just that, I, as a fan, want to watch him play. Aww, screw reason. Give me Jesus!
He played just one of the games yesterday I believe.
You’re right. My mistake. He didn’t start against Wakefield.
Carry on then, Dagra. Carry on.
Is Jesus coming?
barely even breathing hard…
Putting Eduardo in RF in a dome is hilarious
I’m thinking we have a tie for the WC after tonight.
The over/under for misplays in RF by Nunez is 3.
Under. I say two.
Pretty strong lineup for a meaningless game. Plus, Joe said the “right handed lineup” will start Wednesday against Price. If that’s the case, Francona should send Girardi a nice bottle of wine.
The Yankees right handed lineup is sick. So sick that, even though I know its always dumb to root to face a particular team, because you just might get them (see 2006 Tigers). But I would love to see the Yanks play the Rangers and all their lefty starters.
I really hope that he does not. Screw going all-in against the Rays.
I agree….what’s with the “A” group playing?
someone talk me off the ledge and tell me we didnt just give Boston some life with that win last night. I dont want shades of 2004 when they got woken up and never lost again
This post shows that, even with 26 championships preceding it, 2004 was as scarring for many Yanks fans (including me) as Buckner in ’86 was for Sox fans. It was so jarring, it makes irrational fears seem rational.
Yeah 04 was THAT bad, I completely agree.
I see what thetruth is saying, but honestly if that happens it will just be the narrative that is used, it is impossible to say that last nights game changed anything one way or another.
The narrative will always be tailored to fit what happens in reality.
I am very much looking forward to the day Montero is starting regardless of the handed-ness of the opposing starter…
Kid is LEGIT.
Yeah, I am looking forward to opening day 2012 too, but first things first. Let’s win a ring!
We’re trying to win a ring around here, Turtle.
So is anyone else worried about Gardner? At the end of July his wRC+ was ~120 just like it was last year and he was on pace to finish another fantastic season. Since then he has been dreadful at the plate and now his wRC+ of 104 leaves much to be desired. He remains an elite defender and baserunner but his offensive game this last month and a half has been terrible. Are his struggles all BABIP related or do you guys think that maybe he was due for some regression to his actual skill level?
September wRC+ of 105, so slightly above average offense from ninth spot in order to go along with elite defense is fine
So I am watching a foreign channel, the YES announcers were just singing and being weird. Kinda hilarious.
wow, that crowd is pathetic even for the Rays.
And to think all of their bandwagon fans will fill the place up IF they make the playoffs.
funny thing is they couldn’t even fill it for the playoffs last year- they got 35,000 for games 1 and 2 and the capacity was just under 37,000. then for game 5 they got 41,000 with a capacity of nearly 43,000.
My God that’s worse than pathetic. Tampa/St. Petersburg DOES NOT deserve to have a baseball team, especially one that contends. It’d be cool if their franchise was moved to Portland, Oregon, but you know that’ll never happen…
even more pathetic when you see half them are Yankee fans.
I think Noesi’s gonna get a very real shot at a rotation spot next spring. I approve.
Nova 2.0?
probably not, unfortunately, the #4 and #5 spots are somewhat blocked with Hughes and AJ
CC, Nova, Hughes, Burnett, Noesi?
Idk man..that’s four question marks in one rotation
1. How is Nova going to bounce back from his inning increase?
2. Is Phil ever going to live up to his name?
3. AJ Burnett.
4. Can Noesi survive 30 starts at the MLB level?
Nova’s innings are not an issue. He actually threw more innings last year. Add in the playoffs, and he’ll still be in that 20-30 IP increase range, which isn’t bad.
I should rephrase, not *much*of an issue.
Isn’t that right around the suggested increase though? If you can increase the innings 30IP every season of professional ball isn’t that supposed to be ideal?
You’re talking about the Verducci Effect, which has been proven wrong by a number of statistical studies, not to mention talent evaluators and medical personel that are part of MLB teams.
The additional innings Nova gets will also occur in an additional month, so that also needs to be factored in. The workload is spread out over a longer period of time. Think about it. 220 innings over seven months is less taxing than over six months. Verducci doesn’t address any of that.
My bad I forgot to add his ML innings to his AAA innings last season lol.
Well either way that’s three question marks in one rotation which is certainly not ideal.
we came in with that many this season… and that has seemed to turn out OK.
so far, at least
I have a feeling they’ll bring back Garcia and have a competition for the 4th and 5th starter between him, Hughes, Noesi, Warren, Phelps, etc.
Nova had 187 IP last year, 181.1 so far this year, the innings shouldn’t be an issue, but I agree, at least Plan A wouldn’t have all 4 in the rotation
I think that’s the worst case scenario for next year’s rotation. Personally I think Hughes should be a number 4 or 5 starter. He hasn’t shown he can be consistent or healthy for a full season as a starter. Burnett is awful, and I’m not too high on Noesi. I think the Yankees should try to acquire one of Cj Wilson or Yu Darvish. Cj Wilson is a proven starter now and Darvish offers more upside than the current in-house back end of the rotation options. So to summarize, I think the rotation you listed for next year is the worst possible scenario, outside of freak injuries, and it would mean that Cashman wasn’t able to address the only weakness of the team for the second straight offseason for one reason or another.
Well as of next season the only starting pitchers under contract are Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes, and AJ Burnett. If we assume that CC’s going to resign and Phil is going to be healthy that leaves one rotation spot open. I think that goes to Wilson/Darvish/who knows.
they probably will be looking for a #2 again, but it could turn out like last offseason where they don’t get it done and go with quantity over quality, in which case Noesi or one of the other kids might have a shot
Idk why but I’d love to see them take a chance on Darvish. We know what Wilson is and that’s a good(not great) lefty, but he’s going to demand a lot of money…Darvish I think could be cheaper over the long term.
I wouldn’t be shocked if they passed on both and try to get by until the stronger free agent class the next year (Cole Hamels maybe?)
Idk, I mean it might be smarter but the Yank’s aren’t the type of team to go 2 straight off seasons with out some kind of significant upgrade.
true, but they may have enough questions/concerns about both that they would pass if the price got too high
their big signing this offseason could be another LOOGY to not pitch
I really hope they pass on Wilson. His numbers are very good, don’t get me wrong…but before last season he’d never thrown more than 130IP in pro ball, he’s already 30, he just gives me bad vibe…
I can see that happening. Noesi, or even one of the other kids in AAA this year, with Noesi being the lead. If both Garcia and Colon leave, I can see the Yankees looking to bring in a starter (such as Wilson if the price is doable) for one of the spots and then giving Noesi a shot at the second.
I can also see Manny taking AJ’s spot about mid-way through the season when the Yankees finally give up on him.
Unless Man-Ban absolutely blows away the competition at AAA next year i don’t think there is a chance he sniffs the Bronx before Sept. He might have the biggest upside but I think Warren, Betances, and Noesi are all higher on the depth chart than him right now.
Agreed, although he is a lefty and depending on what happens both in the offseason and then during the season, I can see him being given a shot. Probably unlikely, but if he pitches lights out and there’s a need, I don’t think they’ll be afraid to call him up.
Why isn’t dickerson starting in right?
Cuz that would be too smart. Duh.
I think it’s because Nunez has hit Shields well, so Girardi wanted to get him into the game.
Is Jeter hitting .300 a “milestone” that’s important to the Yankees? I can see it important to Jeter as a personal achievement. A nice sounding number, but I don’t see it as a milestone for the Yankees.
I think that statement is made in terms of what the team/coaching staff would like to see guys do… like they are pulling for the guy.
I guarantee that if, somehow, his personal quest conflicted with the overall benefit of the team, it would be ignored. However, Jeter hitting 300, while largely meaningless overall can be a morale booster for Jeter, and the rest of the team who are no doubt pulling for their brother and captain.
I know, I get it. I think I’m just looking for any reason to pick on Michael Kay. It was his choice of words. Hitting .300 is not really a milestone.
I can see Jeter (and Yankee fans) wanting Jeter to hit .300 since most (myself included) figuring Jeter’s days of hitting .300 were behind him.
He could hit .295 or he could hit .305. He’s already proven he’s not done yet.
Boston needs to send Robbie a box of chocolates
Robbie!!!
Dammit Cano! Today is going to be a weird game cheering for the Rays.
Get Cano out of there damnit.
I have a feeling we’ll see Hughes in this game.
Girardi pretty much guaranteed it pre-game.
He definitely will pitch today, might be the first guy out of the bullpen. Probably going to pitch Wednesday as well.
anyone on this list that’s out here in san francisco? i’m moving and i have this huge box of great and weird yankees shit. cards, coins, posters, bobbleheads, stickers…mattingly, henderson, winfield, the like….early 80′s to 90′s. if anyone’s here and wants that box….come and get it. i’m on 16th st. email me at briancircus@gmail.com
i need to have it gone by tomorrow.
well that is a nice offer, presuming you aren’t some sicko red sox fan trying to draw a unsuspecting yankees fan to a trap
Let’s go Hector!
After only hitting .390/.454/.552 in August, Miguel Cabrera has hit .416/.536/.740 in the month of September
But Verlander is carrying the team.
Miguel Cabrera: very good at baseball.
Jorge Teixeira.
Beautiful!
wtf was Upton doing??
Jorge…bad time for a very nice play.
Nice turn by Jorge. So many people cheered for that, I felt like I was in the Bronx.
Wow. What just happened? Turrible Baserunning.
Good job orioles
Orioles putting on a defensive suckfest.
Mark Reynolds needs to hit like 3 HRs off Beckett
So stupid, Russ.
why is Russell sliding head first into first in a meaningless game?
just stop it. stop it.
The Baltimore Buck Showalters are actin’ a fool.
Showalter left the game, looked terrible in the dugout. NESN broadcast said something about an ankle injury, but he could barely keep his eyes open.
Still hasn’t recovered from the loss of Flanny.
HR MATT WEITERS! TIE BALLGAME IN BALTIMORE!
Atta boy Matt!
Wieters to the rescue, solo shot ties game
it costs like $3 to go to a Rays game
I was in Houston a couple months ago, and it only cost $7 to get into Minute Maid Park mid-game.
Hells yea Wieters.
Matt Wieters with a Oppo taco
/byrnes’d
Hector looks tired. Better bring in Proctor.
Please no.
they should only bring in Proctor if the Yankees have a lead in the ninth
anybody know when/how playoff tix are going to be available? I’ve never been to a post season game and now that I’m old enough to budget myself and can afford certain luxuries like that I’d really like to go…
now, apparently
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....season.jsp
ALDS and ALCS tickets have been available for a little while now.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....U318X1-W99
Thanks guys, I’ll talk to a couple friends and probably buy tickets for the possible game 4 ALDS
My client, who is a huge Red Sox fan, emailed me today to admit that she’s rooting pretty hard for the Yankees this week.
Hit into a DP, Robbie, and make up for that homer.
cano can’t help but be awesome.
god dammit Robbie
Save it for Friday
Robbie Cano don’t give a fuck if the Red Sox make the postseason.
He’s gonna pull an Aaron Boone in the ALCS.
Robbie does need a signature playoff moment.
Wow Cano is really Gritty.
/Gritmeterepochfail
Robbie hates the rays so much
Robinson Cano cares not for your playoff aspirations.
Go Tigers! Go Angels!
Can’t believe I said either of those things.
That’s what I’m saying! I have tickets to Texas Home Game 2 of ALDS and I want it to be the Yankees.
Is anyone else a little anxious about whether or not ARod will “regain his timing” for the playoffs?
Yes but he will soon be yielding to Montero in the role of big righty bat for the New. York. Yankees.
You can’t wait for that day. Hell you hope that day was now.
Yanks not that progressive. They wouldn’t regret it. ARod not the same player but still capable of a post season killer streak. Let’s hope.
With Posada not blocking Jesus next year, I am looking forward to 500 abs for Montero.
stupid Jed Lowrie
Playoff rotation:
CC
Nova
Garcia
Noesi
Yeah, I went there.
Attn Micheal Kay the Post Season rotation is as follows:
Sabathia
Nova
Garcia
Colon
…it’s probably been that for a while I think. Stop asking.
Please God, if you ever answer a prayer for me let it be: Do NOT let AJ Burnett touch a post season mound. He has done nothing NOTHING to deserve it this season.
+1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Random Question: I’m just curious, since you’re at the game do you (Mike Axisa) sit in the press box since you write for a big name blog or do you sit in the stands?
I’m pretty sure bloggers are treated differently. Not enough room in the world to fit every blogger in the press booth!
Haha that’s true. But RAB is right at the top though.
I’m in the press box, YES gets me in.
Nice.
Awesome.
That is so fucking cool I hate you.
ruh roh
What is Kay’s obsession with AJ being the #3 starter? Garcia will not be in the pen. He’s one of the starters.
He’s trying to make something out of nothing using the rotation, which has been a question mark most of the season, to continue talking because to Micheal Kay any moment not spent speaking is a minute wasted.
He’s a fan of Aj. Has been for quite some time
BJ UPTOWN BABY!!
Woo hooo! I mean, oh crap…
BJ wants to go to the playoffs
Atta boy Noesi!
Question: Since the Rays hold the tiebreaker, could they request to play a game 163 in Fenway instead of the Trop?
A move only Joe Maddon could make.
Oddly conflicted. Usually watching a Yankee game is easy. I know what I want. A Yankee win. Now…
Think of it as a ST game. The final score doesn’t matter, just make sure everybody gets out of the game healthy and maybe we get to see a couple of the kids play/pitch.
I hate feeling this torn! HATE IT!
Really? I kind of like it.
So many emotions, oh GAHD.
But it’s fun because I’m cool if either the Yankees or Rays win.
Oh yeah, I agree. Just fighting natural tendencies of wanting the Yankees to win. Must talk to food about this.
They played Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” as Girardi came on to remove Noesi…
Funny.
Hector’s doing a great job. Keep it up. Give them the lead and don’t look back.
Valdes is ok for this spot but where’s proctor??
His punishment for giving up a three run homer to Ellsbury is to start and get all 27/24 outs on Wednesday.
Signed- Joe Torre.
I think its safe to say with Proctor pitching it would just be 24 outs.
Think of Proctor as a Weapon of Mass Destruction. WMDs need to be used carefully and in the proper spot. Joe’s holding him back just in case the game is close later on and he wants to reward the Rays like the Red Sox were rewarded last night.
waiting for a blowout in either direction… and polishing up his resume
Every single game against the Rays they debate weather Johnny Damon is a HOFer, and every single time Kay says he’s in if he gets 3,000 hits.
If they let Damon in and he has three-thousand hits, it will be one of the worse HOF picks in history but I won’t be too mad; Damon was a good player for a long time, definitely never great but solid production over many years. In my mind, not the worst HOFer ever.
Now, if he doesn’t even pick up 3,000, it’ll be a travesty.
Not to be a smartass or anything, but let’s say for the sake of argument he gets injured and has to end his career while he’s at 2,999 hits. Is he a Hall of Famer then?
No.
3000!
What I’m saying is, unless he has some wicked 8-WAR season in 2012, he’s not a Hall of Famer by my standards even if he gets 3,000 hits. However, as we have learned, the BBWAA are batshit insane, and they have much different standards. If they let him in on the grounds that he has 3,000 hits, it’s understandable; not agreeable, but understandable. Damon’s been good enough for a long time.
Sterling just got on his soapbox about the same thing. Dunno, having a hard time buying it. nice player and all, but not positive about Damon being Hall-Worthy
Markakis just had a MONSTER AB against Beckett resulting in a walk and of course ball four was over the plate according to the NESN broadcasters.
Johnny Damon = clutch
Hopefully this means that Valdes won’t be on the playoff roster
Yeah, I don’t want Girardi to have two lefties to play with. He’d probably take out Robertson and put in Valdes just to get the lefty on lefty.
three, you have to assume Boone/Laffey get the call. if Valdes gets in too, Girardi may have a binder-gasm
No chance both Laffey and Valdes make the roster. Seems like Laffey is def. off right now.
Jorge says, “THAT PLATE IS STILL MINE!”
Just out of curiosity. Are there any sites like RAB for Red Sox fans. I know it wouldnt be nearly as good as this sight, but I would love to see what comments Red Sox fans would leave if they choke away their post season chances
http://www.overthemonster.com/.....e-playoffs
thanks. I dont like how they have the comments set up on that site
agree.
And can someone tell me who is ” horse face” on the yanks?
“They’re resting Swisher and Horse Face”
must be Tex
My guess is Teixeira since he’s not playing…
Really doubt it’s Jesus, they can’t hate him already can they?
I think they’re referring to Mark Teixieria.
I don’t get it either.
It’s the big toothy smile. I grew up a city boy but now live in the country and know a thing or two about horse’s teeth.
Yea, Tex looks much more like a horse than John Lackey???1!???
http://www.overthemonster.com/
Haha, just noticed they refer to the Yankees as MFY…one guess what that acronym stands for.
Most Fabulous Yankees???
depends on if we sweep the Rays or not… “My Friends the Yankees”!!!!
Mother Fucking Yankees.
/No idea
That’s what I figured…it’s the most logical thing, right?
I suppose. I tried to think like a Red Sox fan for a minute. Worst five seconds of my life.
Lol good stuff
i’m sure that’s what it is
That actually has a nice ring to it.
“Yeah that’s right, because they’re the New York Mother Fucking Yankees!”
overthemonster.com
if you ever see the acronym OTM here that’s what it’s referring to.
Tex might lose his job to Jorge
/ Wally Pipp’d
Wow! Jorge????
Some sabermetric-type needs to go back and comb through the entire Rays season. I’m sure that Maddon creates such stupid situations that it costs his team more than it benefits them.
The rundown double steal of home takes 2 fast runners. Longoria? Not.
that ball was scalded
Acebaldo getting hammered again by the Tigers. One of Cashman’s best non-trades.
That, the Gagne no trade, and the Johan no trade are the first three that come to mind.
not trading for Johan’s Bubble Yuum shoulder was his best non-trade. Or giving up prospects for the guy they would sign in 4 months…
but yeah, that You-Baldy guy is not doing well down there in Cleveland (most likely based on the fact that its Cleveland…)
I love how all the trolls were ripping Cashman that night for not making the trade. Then they retreated back to their holes, never to be seen again …
…Except when they vote 1 on the confidence poll every Monday.
Well technically they’re still not seen because the votes are anonymous, but I gets your point.
Nunie!!!

And Teix has been shockingly poor this year, for him
by Sologub on Sep 26, 2011 7:13 PM EDT
Wow!
Well…he is right…
Really!!!!
http://www.baseball-reference......ma01.shtml
disturbing trend. Last year worst OPS since his rookie year, and then even worse this year.
avg down but power numbers seem about norm.
I guess I have a different definition of “shockingly poor”
yeah, shockingly poor is definitely an overstatement, but definitely no longer elite production
He is 3rd in HR and 4th and RBI
Yes not elite at all.
He all but done.
22nd in AL in wRC+ and 23rd in OPS
Still very good, but no, not elite
still an elite HR hitter, but the BA and OBP and overall offense are not elite
he’s become very one-dimensional as a hitter
his OBP is ~30points lower than his career average, his SLUG is ~50 lower, he has the lowest Line Drive rate of his career, wOBA is his lowest since his rookie year. Don’t get me wrong, I like Tex but he’s having a bad year for himself.
ok .
see above
better yet, the next comment…
Pretty much the same as last year He’s an overrated player
wow, wasnt overrated when the Red Sox were a lock to get him. cock gobblers…
Mike, Have you ever thought of setting up Game Threads as “chat rooms” instead of “bulletin board” style? Wondering if that would be doable for a group as big as this one.
Long ago the comment section used to be flash based. I wish they would consider using AJAX based comments so you don’t have to reload for new comments. It would be the best of both worlds, live updates but not a full blown chat room.
agree
I would love to see Betances and Brackman in this game. I missed them the last time they pitched
Kelly Schoppack just kills the Yank’s…
well. that sucks. only thing worse than giving up a homer, is giving one up to a scrub.
Who circles the bases like Varitek.
Well, I don’t know about how Varitek circles the bases, but…
NO ONE circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills.
Just noticed the bottom of the ESPN.com Yankee-Rays boxscore gives the wind. In the Trop the wind is apparently -1 MPH interesting… didn’t know that was possible… I may suggest simply putting N/A or Dome instead.
http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/.....=310926130
Also very conflicted tonight, not really a big fan of this,
It’s because the dome sucks the air in like the humidity sucks the life outta everyone!
Ok I’ll stop.
Tampa is a vortex, which is obviously why no one goes to those games… that is all.
So what do most Yankee fans think Posada will do next year? We know he’s not coming back to the Yankees but will he retire?
My opinion, as much as he’s loved being a Yankee, I don’t think he has any intention of hanging it up just yet, and considering his .270/.350/.470 line against righties, I can see him getting a shot somewhere as a lefty DH, part-time 1B’man, relief catcher.
His fire to play will outweigh his desire to wear only a Yankee uniform. There’s also a potentially profitable reason for him to give it a shot (beyond the salary he’ll get). If Posada can stick around another couple seasons and reach 300 career HRs, it will improve his HOF chances, and that’s worth a lot of money. Being a HOFer is very profitable.
He will retire.
I would hate for him to play for another team. I hope he retires.
Jorge’s son also has health problems. If Andy Pettitte’s (as far as I know) healthy family drew him away from the game, then I can only imagine the pull Jorge feels. I think it is possible people over-estimate his desire to remain in the game.
I don’t think Pettitte’s family was the reason he retired. He talked about retiring to be home with them for about 5 years before he finally did it. He’d miss them during the season, then as the offseason continued his desire to keep playing would kick in.
I think Pettitte realized that age was wearing on him. He had progressively more health issues as the years went on, and I think he wanted to retire before things got worse.
Fuck you, Desmond Jennings. I want to see Derek Jeter hit .300.
god damn, Jennings. wow, that was sick.
His defensive stats, at least so far in his early career, haven’t been as good as I thought. That, however, was one hell of a catch.
Os have tied it at 2!
yay O’s tie it up.
Tie game in Baltimore!
Chris Davis doesn’t have even one shit to give about the Sox’s postseason aspirations.
2 all in Baltimore. Beckett had settled down for a bit but is back to looking decidedly mediocre.
O’s need to bury them Sox here.
Buck Funts.
Free outs here! Get ya free outs here!
they bunted to get Angle and his .179 avg up. ewwww.
Well with a guy hitting .179 on deck, that’s the smart play!
/Girardi’d
he walked Angle. oh my god. please pound him Hardy.
Bases loaded, 1 out vs Beckett in the 5th. 80 pitches thrown by Beckett. FINISH HIM!
This ump has been squeezing the Yankees pitchers all night.
that order came from the commissioner’s office (in conjunction with NESPN)
wouldn’t NESPN be in favor of a wide strike zone for the Yankees (to help them win and get the Red Sox in the playoffs)
I’m all for a good conspiracy theory, but this seems to fly in the opposite direction of that.
Hah. Excellent point. I’m working on about 8 hours of sleep over the last two nights combined.
Except the Red Sox what the Yankees to win.
Os have bases loaded against Beckett, they better put up a big number here.
…and then fucking Hardy pops out.
Bases loaded in Baltimore, Hardy at the plate. 2-2 tie.
Beckett has walked the Bases loaded, one out in Baltimore. And Beckett is goddam ugly…
someone needs to tell Kay that July is well past the Super 2 cutoff
Jennings was up last year though, he came into the season with a month of service time.
ok, thanks
didn’t realize that
Jennings>>>>>Crawford
Montero>>>>>>>ARod
With the bat…..
I think that second one is VERY premature…
Crystal ball dude.
A-Rod hit over .350 over a full season in the big leagues as a 20-year old.
Arod was a man child
So is Montero.
Not talking about the past. The present will do.
JJ Hardy stands so far off the plate, I doubt he could reach the outside corner…
hughes is getting squeezed
Hardy with a terrible AB. ugh.
This fake Peter Gammons Twitter account is Gold: http://twitter.com/#!/FakePete.....0952968192
If there’s one thing I learned this season it’s that David Cone looks like Buster Keaton.
Seriously baffled by this obsession of yours. Not denying that he looks like him, but it is all I have ever seen you post.
Beckett doesn’t like pitching to Salty
Suckamycockia (as FoghornLeghorn said last night). Lol
wow, a WHOOOOOOOOLE lotta rust on Hughes today. And Martin got got hisself tossed
Hughes has been hitting the zone (Upton, Longo and Zobrist should have been called out on strikes), the Ump is squeezing him
sorry, not watching.
Sterling had him sounding alot like Rick Vaughn before the glasses up there though.
Fucking O’s. that was terrible
Oh…so that’s why The Orioles are a horrible baseball team…
I was watching the Red Sox game, what’s going on with Martin?
Don’t know if you know by now but he was arguing balls and strikes.
yea I kinda figured that.
Whhhhhhhhhhat just HAPPENED
Why the fuck was Martin thrown out? Goddamn umpires.
A weak pop up and a strike out. That’s the best the Os could do against a reeling Beckett. BEAT BECKETT! GET HIM OUT AND GET INTO THAT TIRED BULLPEN!
are you really surprised?
…totally not cool BlUE.
What just happened with Martin?
I hate umpires with a passion. This dickhead has been squeezing the Yankees pitchers all night, and when Martin tells him something about it without showing him up, he picks a fight with him and ejects him. Fucking pathetic.
The Joe West Show. Starting Joe West as Joe West.
Don’t forget to stick around after the game to purchase his first feature length CD.
love umps that think they are bigger than the game
WOW!!!!
Romine !
Montero the catcher takes another hit!
Damn, you seriously couldn’t put Montero to catch? Romine caught 14 innings last night, plus it’s a meaningless game, why not give him a shot?
Tells you what they think doesn’t it.
They probably think they don’t want to risk injury to a postseason bat by having him catch unexpectedly.
IF you believe that I have a nice bridge to sell you.
The binder says Montero is a late inning pinch hitter in this game. Don’t mess with the binder.
Same bridge very cheap too.
Even the Rays’ TV guys are beside themselves at that one. (I don’t know why I’m watching the Rays feed. Guess I miss Dewayne Staats.)
I’ve never seen an ump pick a fight THAT noticeably. Wow, just wow.
Romine getting a lot of work in at catcher all of a sudden.
This is very frustrating but when you got Pudge Romine ya gotta play him.
Don’t hate!
Disagree does not = hate
Tell that to Eagles fans when you give them some perspective about Michael Vick.
This “Pudge Romine” is HATING!
Surprise you didn’t take a shot at Jorge why your at it.
Sorry you’re so sensitive but Montero is not that bad a catcher and is a ton better hitter than Throwmine. Is that better?
Wow… Vlad just got hit 2587. most by any Dominican born player. who knew!
Didn’t the umpires get their asses kicked years ago when they went on strike. How is it that the new umpires union seems to have more power to get away with this nonsense.
Atrocious throw by Salty. Vlad safe at 2nd on a SB attempt. Runner on 2nd, 1 out. Go Os!
Gotta chuckle at Mike’s pregame observation of Posada and Montero taking extra catching practice. Perfect opportunity for Montero to catch. Sad.
Vlad steals 2nd!
Gardy looks at it all the way and then gives up on it. I hate meaningless games.
Nice strikeout, Phil.
Aceves has been warming for about 40 minues waiting for the eventual Beckett implosion
and there it comes!
Yanks looking like a loss. Think I’ll go get some chowduh and watch the Sawx.
3-2 O’s!!!!!1
3-2 Os! 3-2 Os!!!!!!!!!
3-2 O’s!!!
O’s lead!!!!!
HOF CHris Davis
Let me say it again: Chris motha fucken Davis doesn’t have one shit to give about the Red Sox making the playoffs.
yay O’s
Any chance Kontos sneaks onto the postseason roster?
Not with 2 loogy binder boy.
LOLOLOL Ellsbury
O’s take the lead. Fuck you, Proctor!
nice catch Jacoby
lmfao
IN THE PARK HR FOR ANDINO!!!!!!
Hahahahahahaah Ellsbury!!! 6-2 ORIOLES!!!
ELLSBURY DROPS THE BALL! 3 RUNS IN
ELLSBURY DROPPED THE BALL! HE DROPPED THE BALL! 6-2 OS!!!!!
Salty!!!
UZR that!
Ellsbury…more like FAILsbury.
OMG INSIDE THE PARK
The Red Sox, just wow… inside the park HR
Andino MVP
ELOLsbury and SaltaLOLamaccia… they’re FAAAAAAANTASTIC. Inside the park HR looks an awful lot like a coffin nail to me.
I like FAILsbury better, but either was that was awesome.
This is just tragic.
So much for Ellsbury for MVP. I wonder if his UZR will actually be reduced by 2 whole runs.
GOODBYE RED SOX IF THESE TWO SCORES HOLD UP! GOODBYE RED SOX!!!!!!
And that’s your A.L Mvp folks.
Jacoby Ellsbury.
Jim Palmer: Andino can do it all. Really?
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
There is ESPN MVP Ellsbury!!!!!!
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....nt-2909449
And to think Peter Gammons doesn’t even work for them anymore.
Too funny !!!
In all seriousness, props to Beckett for not “Lackey’ing” up when he saw the ball come out.
Lackey might have fallen and gone into the full Platoon pose after seeing that.
agreed.
That’s true. I’ll give him some props. But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop hating the guy (Or at least the pitcher, have no idea what he’s like off the field).
Granderson catches that with his bare hand.
Robert Bambino
Hahahaha I wonder what Gammons thinks about Ellsbury’s MVP chances are now!
/BlamingEllsburyForNotMakingASpectacularCatch’d
RUN PREVENTION!
Ellsbury sent the Sox to the playoffs last night and he might have knocked them out tonight, lol.
Yanks have 5 catchers possibly better than Salty behind the plate.
But the RedSox have 7aces…
butbutbutbut…. Epstein won the Catcher Lottery(c) this year?!?!?!
GREATEST COLLAPSE EVAH!
Ah Ken Singleton is finally learning about modern day technology. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll learn that the Wins stat really doesn’t mean shit.
I’ve never rooted this hard for the Yankees to lose.
Let’s go.. YANKEES SUCK.. YANKEES SUCK!!
And the beauty of expanded rosters is that you can root for guys you hope you will never see again to suck.
(I was actually hoping for a good outing and then the Valdes/Proctor/Laffey to take care of things.)
HAHAHAHHA. that was too funny. when talking about the Sox-O’s score, Suzy Waldman has informed us that people were actually cheering in TB over the insid the parker…
“You know what that means, John… There are ACTUALLY Rays fans here!”
best line of the year for Waldman
Wow…Suzyn, bringing the Snark. I like it.
I think her best line was “Vlad stole second because Red Sox catchers can’t throw out runners.”
yeah, she is on a tear tonight. you sit through what could only be described as the ramblings of a mentally unstable woman ALL YEAR LONG for a night like tonight when she is actually pretty goddam funny
Yup, I’m actually laughing instead of tearing my hair out. It could be the game, though.
Haha people on OTM are blaming Francona for Ellsbury’s fail.
you gotta put in Darnell McDonald for a big game like this. Tito really dropped the ball.
oh wait. Actually it was Ellsbury who dropped it.
I wish these comments had a “like” so I could sit and like this comment for the next 15 minutes
He did leave Beckett in too long.
I blame Pedroia. He didn’t have enough grit to catch that ball.
shoulda used his tonsils like he normally does.
I hope Francona like managing the White Sox, next year.
Up until Saturday, I didn’t think the collapse could actually happen, and then when we pounded Lester, I thought it was real. After the Sox edged us out last night, and took a one-game lead with three to go, with a schedule of three versus the O’s, I thought they could edge it out. Now, if the scores hold, I’ll actually believe it. Wow. Tomorrow morning, we could actually have a tie for the Wild Card.
Eight outs to go, Orioles.
And they got Bedard pitchingfailing tomorrow.
this is AWESOME!
Why is Ron Washington starting CJ Wilson tonight when he’d have to turn around and pitch on 3 days rest on Friday? Would we rather face Verlander/Fister or the Rangers starters on short rest? Root for the Rangers to lose.
I learned in 2007 never to root to face any team. I wanted the Indians in the worst way…and we all remember what happened.
yeah, you really sucked in that series
And I wanted Detroit in 2006, because they were so cold and I figured we’d feast on Kenny Rogers. D’oh!
Well at least in 2009 and 2010 we wished to play the Twins in the first round, and we all know what happened then.
But I remember 2006 and 2007 all too well.
Cocaine is a hellva drug.
This is Ron “I love blowing out my starter’s arms” Washington what else do you expect?
Time to roll out the Scranton kids. Give everyone but ARod the rest of the game off.
Nice to see Hooters
… advertising behind home plate
nice wholesome family entertainment
Tampa is like a 3rd world country.
I would expand that to the entire state of Florida…
Now a fan runs on the field in Baltimore and according to Remy and Orsillo, no guards or anything are going after him.
I’ve become such a fan of over the monster lately. Such optimism in their comments. It’s hilarious to watch.
anyone who tries to be positive is shot down, I love it.
Wow, are they serious? “Agreed, blow it up, start over.” To which somebody responded “Keep only Pedroia and Gonzalez.” The somebody suggested they bring PapelBitch back and got “Nope, nobody else
I don’t mind a couple years of futility if we can rebuild the right way.” I can honestly say I’ve never been this fairweather with the Yankees…
I liked Saltalaputa.
Kontos make the team next year?
probably on the Scranton shuttle all year
now that we could use Proctor for 3 innings, Joe doesnt use him…
Chowduh tasting very good this evening. I have leftovers for the next two nights. Delicious this time of year.
Let the cards fall where they may. The only pleasure I seek is Boston missing the playoffs. If we face Detroit, I don’t care. If we face Texas, I don’t care. All I know is that the New York Yankees are the best team in the American League.
Beating the Sox for the division great.
Sox not making playoffs greater.
Great solace for us no matter what happens in October.
This is too funny how people at Over the Monster react:
http://www.overthemonster.com/.....s#78535831
I’ve just spent the last twenty minutes over there reading…it’s so funny.
Here’s some more haha they are in full blown cliff jumper mode over there.

my favorite so far:
Tito:
Fuck you. EVERYONE seems to know when someone is done except you. If people argue about him keeping strong with Pedey in 07, yes, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. A stopped clock is right twice a day. How many games has Francona cost us this season? at least 10. That is HUGE amounts. this could be the difference between a playoff spot and a team that is sucking this much. A GOOD manager would bring the team up from this huge slump in september. Thank you for 04, even though you didnt do shit, Kevin Millar, Curt Schilling and David Ortiz did all that single handedly. Its time to say good bye, it sucks that you will be remembered as “the best sox manager evar” even though you were worse than Grady Little. Fuck off.
That site is epic. The level of despair is just amazing.
And I thought Girardi was criticized around here…holy fuck.
Haha WOW, and I thought that everyone here (including myself) thinks Girardi is bad.
Several references to the Black Sox. Idiots actually think they are throwing this.
Beckett against the orioles in september: 12 runs in 13.1 IP.
Ace.
My God Aceves’ arm is going to fall off eventually. I hope they bring in Papelbitch just because.
On the Yahoo Live Box Score updates they have Aceves in a Yankee hat. Nice insult to injury for any Sux fans “watching” that way.
When the hell was the last time a manager was traded?
Lou pinella for Randy Winn
Lou Piniella for Randy Winn.
Who is that more insulting to, Piniella or Winn?
Lou Piniella was traded to the Rays- maybe for Yankee Legend Randy Winn?
Thanks. I don’t even remember that, which is strange.
And context for anyone wondering why I asked the question. On the Red Sox feed they mentioned the Florida Marlins and the Chicago White Sox were working on the finals of a deal to trade Ozzie Guillen to the Marlins.
The Associated Press is reporting mass suicides have just occurred at ESPN headquarters.
Fangraphs has Luis Ayala at a 4.3 fWAR.
I <3 made up stats.
My God. And Alfredo Aceves who has been HUGE for Boston this season has a 0.9 fWAR.
Check that he has a 1.0 fWAR but you get the point.
Ummm, his fWAR is 0.4
Jeter’s bid to hit .300 is taking a BABIP reaming this game.
I don’t care if you win, Tampa. BUT I WANT JETER TO END THE YEAR AT .300.
I’ve never been so happy to see Big Game James come up big for the Rays.
O’s failpen better not blow this.
Who would Boston pitch if they had to play a one game playoff with the Rays?
It won’t be Lester or Beckett.
Lester on no rest or Beckett on two days rest. Better than Lackey or Wakefield though.
Lester on no rest > all the other options. Hehehe.
Matt Moore?
Pedro Ports isn’t looking too solid for BAL.
Hold them, Os. Don’t blow this like you normally would.
Red Sox have loaded the bases with one out in the eighth
So we head to the playoffs with a 4 game losing streak?
I’d be fine with it.
Unlikely, but possible. Really wouldn’t matter to the Yankees.
It’s probably likely the Yankees take one of the games in Tampa. Something usually happens. Could even still happen in this game.
What I’m hoping is the Red Sox end the season on a four-game losing streak. Three to Baltimore and one to the Rays in the playoff.
John Lackey divorcing his wife who has cancer…wow.
he’s a caveman
I would like to apologize if I have insulted any Cavemen.
An ugly man in so many ways.
Jeez. Where did he go to, the John Edwards school of bad moves?
I mean, who knows what’s the story is here. Maybe she’s divorcing him. Doesn’t sound good.
the article reported that “he filed for divorce” and “has a prenup”
Where did you hear that?
Cameraman sucks. That looked like a no-doubter.
Nice pitch there by Strop to get Salty. Now for the GOAT Scutaro.
Racist strikes out!
Brackmonster is coming in!
Salty K’s Two down.
Salty with an epic game. Brackman coming in!
LaRussa giving away outs down 2 in the 7th….
O’s are one inning away.
Thank you, Scutaro for grounding out so I can see Brackman pitch.
The fighting Showalters are pumped!
Ports!!!
bases loaded 1 out and the sox get no runs. this is too good.
Is it Jim Johnson time in Baltimore yet?
My God Showalter is looking like a genius with that Wild Card prediction a month ago. Totally forgot about that.
Didn’t he say they’d win the division though?
Didn’t he say that the Yankees would be the team left out though?
Brackman’s breaking ball looks pretty flat. Not a lot of movement.
This. His stuff is average.
Salty just died.
Still none too excited that Granderson’s heading into the postseason on a cold streak. I could say, here’s hoping he heats up, but I know that that’ll make no difference whatsoever.
Icy cold.
I don’t know if I could see Bobby Valentine meshing with the Red Sox front office team.
Brackman is all leg.
He looks like Gumby but his mechanics need work. Doesn’t use his legs enough.
http://media.scout.com/Media/H.....00X266.JPG
How’s that for using his legs? Brackmomster is right.
The Red Sox getting Valentine would be doing Yankee fans the biggest favor they could do with regards to a manager.
if that makes any sense…
I think they need to get Guillen….
Could you imagine Ozzie in Boston? I could just envision the post game pressers.
Now Salty is hurt? Wow, things really aren’t going the Sox way.
Ryan Lavahhhhhhhhhnway in for Boston….
You know he’s gonna win it with a gritty 5 run homer
Salty out. Just missed catching the pitch and it hit him in the collarbone area.
See that Nunez? Brackman should be able to throw harder seems to me. Doesn’t have best mechanics to take advantage of his size. Imagine what he could do with a DRob stride!
Johnson is the only huge pitcher I can recall that really threw hard. Chris Young and John Rauch who are both huge also work 90-92.
I guess it depends on how big is big.
CC is 6’7″ and he can hit 98 when he really lets it fly. What about Andrew Miller? Didn’t he throw 96+, or used to, that is.
For the most part, though, tall guys seem like they should throw harder.
Mark Langston
Nope he was only 6’2″ – not sure why I thought he was taller.
I think with a D-Rob stide his front foot would land half way between the mound and home plate, and he’d release the ball ten feet short of home!
And that would allow him to hit 150 mph!
He used to throw much harder. Very weird what happened to his velocity this year.
Now go quietly 1-2-3 in the 9th, k?
This message goes for both Yanks and Sox today.
Jorge with the GIDP. Nice work!
I hope this game makes Girardi think twice before playing Posada come playoffs time. But I know it wont.
O’s broadcast had an epic call on that Andino inside the parker.
What’s with Alex’s new bat? I can’t remember him ever using anything but a black one.
Crap, Farnsworth is in, he may mess this up.
I hope montero goes yard here then Farnsy gets the last out.
One of the weekend writers, I think it was Stephen, wrote that it was pretty much impossible to hate the Rays. After this year I see what he meant, I still can’t find a good reason to dislike this team, even when they win.
Johnson hits Ellsbury then Balks him to second.
Never been so happy to see the Yankees lose in my life.
I notice Montero strikes out alot with that 1 handed follow through. It is weird that a player switches between different follow throughs.
His follow through is with 2 hands and his strikeouts have been going down and will continue to do so. ELITE HITTER.
While I wouldn’t expect Montero to develop into a power hitter that also made very good contact, like a Pujols or a DiMaggio, I can see him developing much better contact skills the more he learns MLB pitchers and styles.
He seems to adjust well and his swing isn’t crazy.
He’ll be fine.
It’s because he’s out in front on those pitches. Jeter does the same thing sometimes. The best way to explain it is that the batter is so out in front that his bottom/front hand goes forward while the top/back hand comes off and stays back. It also could be that he realizes the pitch is a ball mid-swing and he tries to just make any kind of contact that he can. You know, kind of like how Brett Gardner swings 90% of the time.
Yep. Totally agree with Bill’s analysis. He only let’s go with the top hand when he’s fooled by the pitched and is swinging over it. He’s “reaching” for it.
Crawford grounds out 1 down.
2 outs away from an AL WC tie.
Would have preferred 3 more abs from Jesus but you can’t overcome Joe G.
Ugh, and how I hate how that’s fact . . . He should’ve caught . . . Unless they truly plan to make Romine the backup catcher in October.
I’m with you. The biggest obstacle for Jesus is Joe G. I am already dreading ST next year if Montero doesn’t hit .300.
Back to Scranton!
From Pete Abraham:
oh good, the Sux are teasing their fans here in the 9th
Pedroia singles in Ellsbury 6-3 O’s
Wow. Please don’t choke this Baltimore.
Damn, Ortiz got lucky there. Sox have tying run at the plate. Hold em, Os!
God damnit Orioles, if I just spent the last three hours rooting against MY TEAM and rooting for you, just for you to lose I swear I’m gonna be furious.
The Sox are trying to take the MVP away from Andino! Not cool.
Ortiz singles tying run up
Orioles gonna blow this thing, huh?
Double play please, thanks.
One more out
c’mon O’s. one more out.
HeGon!
Gonzalez flies out two down
Oh My God, this must gut wrenching for Sox fans…I love it.
Jim Johnson…stud
And Boston’s Wild Card lead is gone
We have a tie atop the AL Wild Card
There is a TIE in the AL Wild Card.
tied up
lmfao
Your AL WC leaders the TAMPA BAY RAYS!!
no it’s a tie haha I can’t get too ahead of myself.
Not Yet buddy, that’s tomorrow
Wild card tied….
AL EAST TIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ahahahahahahahahahahahaha
WOOOO ORIOLES WIN!
YEAH!!
You guys ready to pahk some cahs?
The wildcard lead is now GONE! Boston and Tampa tied. Tampa has Hellickson and Price lined up against a team that has nothing to play for. It’s over for the Sox.
Tied!
YIPEE YAYO KAHYAY MOTHER F*CKER.
This is the best night of the season!
In your dreams Larkin
What a month for the Boston LOL Sox
Lol, the guys at OTM are jumping on the Tigers bandwagon now!
http://www.overthemonster.com/.....s#78545522
I’d love to see a Rays-Yankees ALCS. That would be such a “fuck you” to the Red Sox.
How is it determined, btw, who the Yankees play? Is it based on which team, the Tigers or Rangers, have the worse record?
Yeah. As of now it’s Detroit.
Beats me. The Yankees can beat either though.
Fuck it, I’ll say it: I’d rather see the Sox make it with their obnoxious fanbase than the Rays make it with their non-existent one.
Seriously, Tampa? You start the night one game out of a playoff spot after a completely unfathomable run, and you don’t even fucking show up to the stadium?
All of their fans were present and accounted for, it was just that there are only 5,000 of them at most.
Screw that. I HATE the Smelly Sox. Go Rays!!
It’s not like they just turned good either.
Oh how I wish the Yanks would’ve tried to win last..
Same here. Pinch hit Jesus or A-Rod or Jeter earlier. Bring in anyone but Proctor. Bring in Brackman. Bring in Four-Walk Bentances.
Yep Or Ayala. Why couldn’t he pitch last night?
wow, they just dropped a number on MLBN the Sox are 1-19 in September when scoring >12 runs.
That’s right. heheh
They’re actually 2-19 because they won a game in which they scored 4 runs and they won last night scoring 7 runs. Still terrible though.
September- best month of the year!
But really, I wish everyone would stop acting like the injuries are the only reason for the Sox meltdown. They had the chance to acquire better pitching over the summer and they didn’t. Stop defending poor decision making by management MLBN (and Steve Berthiaume at ESPN).
Berthiaume has actually criticized the free agancy decisions by the Red Sox along with the injuries
This is true.
And to ESPN’s credit, Keith Law and Eric Karabell have been very critical of management’s decisions this summer.
Which ones?
Mostly the failure to find a better starting pitcher on the trade market than Bedard. They pointed out that the Sox could’ve acquired Wandy on waivers, or gone through with the Harden deal instead of Bedard, or looked for someone like Bart or Freddy.
They’ve been hurt by injuries. Yet this collapse is historic. It goes beyond just injuries. Their hitters are collapsing the last week.
So…
Arod/Youkilis
Hughes/Buckholoz(different points of the season)
Burnett/Lackey
Soriano/Jenks
MLB East Champs/3rd Place?
Exactly.
Also, they knew DiceK wasn’t a sure thing but they didn’t look for a Freddy/Bart in the off season, or really during the trading season this summer.
Even so they’re still way too good a team (on paper at least) to go 6-19 in a month. The Red Sox groupies in the media have predictably turned into Red Sox apologists.
hey, it looks like the Braves are also gonna blow a huge WC lead…
Awesome. the Cards just tied it up in Houston.
The Card have tied the Astros and are ready to move into a tie for the NL Wild Card. So why is baseball going to have two wild cards again?
Would love a thread on Brackman’s mechanics. To me, he seems to short arm the ball and with his arm and leg length that is saying something.
From Dave Schoenfield: “Just in case … assuming Lester does start Wed, likely tiebreaker Ps: Jeff Niemann (or Matt Moore!) vs. Wakefield/Lackey on 3 days’ rest.”
If the Yankees could only hit John Lackey yesterday I could have enjoyed some media panic…
You’re not seeing panic right now?
Even if the Red Sox win the next two games, the Yankees have to win a game, and who knows what will happen on Wednesday. That was the reason for Joe Girardi’s comments earlier.
The best chance for a Yankee win is tomorrow’s game if Bartolo is on his game. I want Bartolo to pitch well, but…
That was as poorly worded post on my part, but hope it makes sense.
lol wow:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....ozzie.html
I am so confused… How do the Sox get a prospect, too?!?!
Ozzie is gonna turn that team around!
Braves and Cards could be tied soon.
What a month.
The collapse is now complete. The Red Sox no longer control their own destiny.
Check it out. Already.
http://gif.mocksession.com/wp-.....LSBURY.gif
What was that scored? I can’t rate the difficulty by the gif. Was it considered catchable and scored an error, or was it scored a hit?
it was an inside the park homer.
Thanks. All I heard originally was that he dropped a ball, but that was the first time I saw it. Since his back was to the field and he was right on top of the wall, it looked like it was a tough ball to catch, yet he did seem to have it in his glove, which means he should have held it.
With two men on and they lost by three.
I think it was scored as a hit. Gameday had it as an inside the park home run.
It honestly would’ve been an outstanding catch if he held on…he was running full speed just to catch up to the wall.
That’s a beautiful thing.
I was watching it live and thought it would’ve been a spectacular catch. no way that’s an error. He closed a ton of ground just to catch up to it
The Rays have tied the Red Sox int the wild card, the Cardinals are about to do the same to the Braves, and Ozzie Guillen will be traded to the Marlins. What a wacky night in baseball.
Russ Martin lol
Well, at least Logan Morrison has to worry about using Twitter. He now has a manager (and his son) who uses it more!
*doesn’t* have to worry.
More great comments:
“Adrian Gonzalez went far enough to say that the Yankees would be ‘playing with fire’ if they ‘let up on the gas pedal,’ even for the final three games after clinching the American League East and home field in the playoffs during the last week.
‘If any team goes into a series and plays not to win, it can hurt you,’ he said. ‘All ballplayers know that. You go into the playoffs and you may not be able to just turn it on again.’”
How does AGon know so much about the playoffs?
Wasn’t he part of the Padres team that collapsed down the stretch?
The Padres pretty much had that division locked up (and had the second best record record in baseball!!!) until they lost those 10 games in a row. That opened the floodgates which allowed the Giants to finally surpass them on the season’s final game. Something very similar could very well happen to the Red Sox this year.
Curse of AG >>>> Curse of MT
He looks strange without the moustache.
If I was the umpire and a catcher asked me if I stretched before the game and I seemed a little tight I would be pissed. A warning would be given-not an ejection.
Hahahahaha, is that what Martin said to get tossed? Very nice play on words Russel.
Russ hates the Sox-brilliant move to get himself out to decrease our chances of winning.
Wow the girl from MLBN reporting from Camden Yards is really hot…and she did an entire recap with messing up once. I’m in love.
The Red Sox are paying roughly $84,000,000.00 to Lackey, Crawford, Drew, Dice-k*, Cameron and Jenks this year. Which is more than the entire payroll of 13 teams: the Astros, A’s, Blue jays, Brewers, D-backs, Indians, Marlins, Nationals, Padres, Pirates, Reds, Rockies and Royals.
Those small market gritty grinders with the genius GM.. I LOVE IT!
*I prorated the $50MM posting fee for Dice-K over the 6 years of his contract. It’s actually more when you consider they had to pay it upfront in one lump sum instead of over 6 years.
how the hell did the Sox get to this point where they can’t plug two holes in the rotation with anything decent? they are scouring the market for starters for these last two games.
This from OTM after dozen of hateful and disgusting posts about the Rays fans and their blog:
“This blog is known for class with an occasional spat”
You keep telling yourselves that Sox fans. I guess by “occasional” they mean “frequent.” Unfortunately, in reality, our arch rivals are not done. Yes, they completed the collapse to drop into a tie, but they can still eke their way in somehow. And I for one would rather the (arguably) best team in the AL from May-August to sit this one out so they don’t even get a chance to redeem themselves in a short series.
