New design added to the RAB Shop
Posted by: | Comments
It’s been a while since we promoted our merchandise, so it’s a good time to get a new design up there. I think this one (courtesy of Tyler Wilkerson) is pretty self-explanatory. There’s a total of a dozen designs available at the RAB Shop now, and you can get them all on t-shirts, hoodies, coffee mugs, all sorts of stuff in a variety of colors. Check it out.
Game 152: Makeup
Posted by: | CommentsIf you were expecting the Rays today, I don’t blame you. I completely forgot about this makeup game until Joe reminded me during last Friday’s podcast. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. The Yankees own the Twins, especially at Yankee Stadium.
Anyway, I actually wrote about Scott Diamond (today’s Twins starter) last offseason as a potential Rule 5 Draft target, but the Twins gobbled him up before he ever got to the Yankees. He’s a rather ordinary left-hander, with a low-90′s fastball to go along with his changeup and big overhand curveball. The video above comes from his first career win a few weeks ago. Diamond has only thrown 29.2 IP for Minnesota this year, and in those 29.2 IP he’s struck out 17 and walked 12. Not great, and the rate stats (5.16 K/9 and 3.64 BB/9) are in line with what he’s done at Triple-A since the start of last season. Of course, the Yankees have never seen him before, and that usually means CERTAIN DOOM. Here’s the starting nine…
Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Andruw Jones, LF
Jesus Montero, DH
Russell Martin, C
A.J. Burnett, SP
It’s a 1:05pm ET start today, and you can watch on YES. If you’re stuck in the office, WCBS 880 has the radio call. Enjoy.
Cervelli has been concussion symptom free for three days
Posted by: | CommentsVia Peter Botte and Mark Hale, Frankie Cervelli has been without concussion symptoms for three days now. He and the team are waiting for doctors to evaluate the results of an ImPACT test (more on that here) before making any decisions, so it’s still unclear if he’ll be able to return to the field this year. “I pray every day for that,” said Cervelli, who also confirmed that he’ll be going back to the Great Gazoo helmet.
Frankie’s latest concussion opened up a “who would be the backup catcher in the playoffs?” can of worms, but the Yankees might not even need to carry a clearly defined backup in the postseason. Either way, the important thing is that Cervelli gets healthy and doesn’t rush back.
Fan Confidence Poll: September 19th, 2011
Posted by: | CommentsRecord Last Week: 3-3 (24 RS, 21 RA)
Season Record: 91-60 (809 RS, 606 RA, 97-54 pythag. record), 4.5 games up in AL East, 6.5 up for wildcard
Opponents This Week: vs. Twins (one game, Mon.), vs. Rays (four games, Tues. to Thurs., two on Weds.), vs. Red Sox (three games, Fri. to Sun.)
Top stories from last week:
- The west coast trip continued in Seattle, a series that started with a big win over Felix Hernandez. Mariano Rivera got his 600th career save the next day, but Luis Rodriguez hit a walk-off homer in the series finale.
- After the final off day of the season, the Yankees went to Toronto. They lost the opener on Jose Molina’s walk-off hit, but won Saturday’s game with a big comeback. They got shutout by Sunday’s game.
- Injury News: Phil Hughes was pushed back a few days because of back spasms. Robinson Cano got hit by a pitch in the foot in Seattle, but x-rays were negative. Frankie Cervelli was officially placed on the DL with concussion symptoms. Pedro Feliciano underwent surgery on his rotator cuff and is unlikely to pitch next year.
- The Yankees are selling Short Season Staten Island, but are purchasing Triple-A Scranton. Staten Island won their league championship.
- CC Sabathia was named a finalist for the Roberto Clemente Award while David Robertson is up for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award.
- The Yankees signed 16-year-old Colombian catcher Alvaro Noriega for $175k.

Sunday Night Open Thread
Posted by: | CommentsAt long last, that ugly road trip is finally over. The Yankees went just 4-6 on a trip that took them to Baltimore, Anaheim, Seattle, and Toronto in the span of 11 days, yet they still managed to increase their lead in the AL East from 2.5 games to 4.5 games because the Red Sox are playing that poorly right now. They lost to the Rays again this afternoon, and are now just two games up on the wildcard. When September started, they were nine up. The Yankees haven’t been playing well at all, but it could be worse. A lot worse.
Anyway, here is your open thread for the night. The ESPN Sunday Night game is the Cardinals at the Phillies (Carpenter vs. Hamels), and the Sunday Night Football game is the Eagles at the Falcons. You can talk about that more here, anything goes. Go nuts.
The Upcoming Rotation
Posted by: | CommentsThere’s only a week (and three days) left in the regular season, and the Yankees need to start sorting out their starting pitching situation. Phil Hughes has already been pushed back because of back spasms, and before this afternoon’s game, Joe Girardi announced the rotation for the upcoming series against the Rays…
Monday: A.J. Burnett (makeup game against the Twins)
Tuesday: Ivan Nova
Wednesday: Hughes and CC Sabathia (doubleheader)
Thursday: Bartolo Colon
It seems likely that the Yankees will have Sabathia start on three days rest next Sunday against the Red Sox, lining him up for Game One of the ALDS. I have to imagine that he’d be on a pitch count in that scenario, five innings or 80 pitches, something like that. Given how far along we are into the season, it sure seems like Colon is going to be the Game Two starter, doesn’t it? They could always flip him and Freddy Garcia, but it would take some work to get Nova lined up for that second game behind Sabathia.
Football Open Thread
Posted by: | CommentsThe Jets are home against the Jaguars (1pm ET on CBS), but the Giants don’t play until tomorrow night. All football talk goes here.
Game 151: Rest
Posted by: | CommentsNow that we’re so late in the season and the Yankees have a playoff spot all but wrapped up, it’s time to start resting the regulars. Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira get the afternoon off while Robinson Cano gets off the turf and spends the day as DH. Given their recent workloads, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rafael Soriano and David Robertson were on today’s no pitch list. Expect more of this in the coming days. Here’s the lineup….
Brett Gardner, CF
Eduardo Nunez, 2B
Robinson Cano, DH
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eric Chavez, 1B
Russell Martin, C
Chris Dickerson, LF
Ramiro Pena, SS
Freddy Garcia, SP
The game starts at 1:07pmET and can be seen on YES. If you’re interested, the Rays and Red Sox will be playing at 1:35pm ET, and that game will be on TBS. Enjoy.
