NLDS Game Thread: Phillies @ Cardinals
ByThe Cardinals stole Game Two thanks to some stellar bullpen work, and now they’ll look to take the series lead behind Jamie Garcia. Philadelphia’s co-co-ace gets the ball for the Fightin’s. Game starts at 5:07pm ET and can be seen on TBS. Talk about it here if you want.

Good clubs win swing games. I expect Philly to win and win convincingly. Cliff Lee continued his playoff woes against every team except the Yankees but he won’t be starting again this series.
Cliff Lee continued his playoff woes against every team except the Yankees
Except he owned the Rays twice last year, the Dodgers in 09, and the Rockies in 09 too…
This guy’s been spreading that misinformation through two threads now. Facts don’t interest him; he’s got his narrtaive and he’s sticking to it.
Phuck Philly.
FOX deserves a Brewers-Rangers World Series.
The ppl who hate big market teams would be happy.
But they wouldn’t watch.
LOL +1. The small market, purist WS would have worse ratings than an MLS Cup final.
Lol exactly.
Great ABs for these Cardinals early on. Make Hamels work and get to their overrated pen.
I’m pretty nervous too, since it’s do or die, but I’ll take a nap shortly and wake up right before the action starts. Idk, it seems to help with me.
Reply fail, I meant to reply Super Cereal’s comment.
Guys, I’m super freaking about this Yanks game tonight… talk me off a ledge, please.
Oh, also: STL-MIL NLCS — lowest rated ever?
Be cool. Everything gonna be irie.
Sweat Game 5.
In only 5 of A.J.’s 32 starts this year has he allowed more than four runs making 84.38% 4 runs or less.
22 were 3 runs or less.
In only 3 of his 32 starts did he go less than 5 innings.
In his 2 starts against the Tigers this year he allowed 5 runs in 12 innings which is a 3.75 ERA
Lefties Hit .321/.368/.488 against Porcello. Grandy and Cano should have fun.
Porcello also allowed a .302/.350/.470 batting line at Comerica.
Once men get on against Porcello, it usually steamrolls as he allowed .307/.356/.450 line with men on.
With RISP and 2 outs, Porcello allowed a .326/.376/.500 line.
In contrast, A.J. allowed a .205/.347/.434 line with 2 outs & RISP and a .247/.330/.468 line with men on.
A.J. did his best work in high leverage situations. Batters had a .232/.309/.416 line in those instances.
On the other hand, Porcello completely implodes allowing .309/.357/.431 line in high leverage situations.
I truly believe the Yankees have a great shot at this game and I hope I talked you off the ledge,
Wow. You did it! Can I hire you during future Octobers?
Anytime.
I always try to stay positive.
*golf clap*
Can we get some spillover threads tonight? Loading that thing was realll difficult last night
Seconded.
The season is ovah, brothas. The Yankees need to sign Edwin Jackson and call up DJ Mitchell next season
In the words of Tommy Lee Jones from “The Fugitive”
I DON’T CARE!
You better not watch the game then since the season is over.
Why you following up my comment with the word “fugitive”? Despicable
Just lightning the mood hear…I still hope NY pulls this out. AJ gunna come up big tonight, but we still screwed
How are you lightening the mood when you come on a Yankee blog and say the season is over before the game has even been played? Please.
Edwin Jackson? Really?
To me, unless the FA or trade possibility is of top caliber, the Yanks would be better served going the scrap heap/young farmhand route. The long contract for ok talent strategy doesn’t work.
Edwin Jackson is not much better than AJ.
OT: the attendance for the Rays games was 32,828 (yesterday) and 28,299 (today) with a capacity of 34,078. Good thing that they “believe”…
This game will be over by 7pm. WTF. haha. Did it really start at 5:37????
Why did those fans try to grab the squirrel? What would they have done if they caught it?
unbelievable the strikes hamels got in this john jay at bat
Funny how Brenly is questioning the Home plate umps strike zone, but you couldn’t get this same valauable analysis last night in Detroit when Verlander is throwing the ball in the other batters box for strike 3.
Does it matter? The game is over.
In the grand scheme of things, no it’s not important. But it speaks to critical thinking of the analysts and how it affects the play on the field.
* how the umpires calls affects the play on the field.
Would football fans put up with their officials blatantly altering the definition of what constitutes a first down, or a catch near the sidelines, especially when you can easily see it on tv and have the technology for the officials to see AND change the call to the correct call?
No.
So why do we baseball fans sit here and let Bud Selig send out a bunch of interpreters of the strike zone? If the strike zone is letters to knees, black to black, then you can’t let pitches in the other batters box be called strikes, or pitches off the plate be called strikes.Especially when you have pitchfx and other systems that can tell you instantly whether the pitch is good or not.
Bad move by the Cards. They were going to pinch hit for Hamels anyway.
Pinch hit 3 run homer by Ben Francisco Phils 3-0
Why walk the eighth hitter if you already knew that they would bring in a pinch hitter. Hamels was at 117 pitches. Bad move by LaRussa.
The smartest man in the room outsmarted himself in that inning. Should’ve hit for Garcia, and he thought he was clever by forcing Hamels out. If anything, I’d want Hamels back out with that high pitch count.
Bingo. Force Manuel to burn a pitcher for one inning or face that reliever leading off the next inning.
Eventually, Philly was going to break through….
I think people don’t give the Phillies offense enough credit. I’ve heard people say that they “can’t hit a lick” and other things like that, which is simply not true. They’re not the best offense in baseball, but they’re definitely above average.
They are clutch.
Terrible at bat by Berkman- is he hitting better from the right side this year or is he still awful?
.277 average from the right side this year, 4 HRs. Not as good as from the left side (.307, 27 HRs), but still very respectable.
Cards have the bases loaded with one out against Lidge in the eigth.
Allen Craig and Albert Pujols in order to bat
Charlie “Goober” Manuel going through relievers like a fiend.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
Craig grounds into a DP ahead of Pujols and the Phillies escape
Jesus no DP at all costs there, man. You just gotta knock one in there. Lame-o-rooni.
You dont even have to knock one in. A strikeout wouldnt have been bad because Pujols would have gotten to the plate. The DP was the one bad thing that could happen and it happened.
Man, I hear you. When I saw Pujols was on deck… Jeez, I just wanna see Philly get knocked out of the playoffs!
Jesus they didn’t score. That is freakin sad.
Schumaker caught that ball.
Uh, shouldn’t there be three out, he threw to first. Awful all the way around. Should be three outs. Moot point, pitcher struck out, but still my point stands.
Montero Sr. gets a double to start the bottom of the 9th….
The just-not-quite-enough 9th inning rally has become a running feature of this post-season.
