Open Thread: World Series Game Seven
ByHow crazy was that game last night? One of the best I’ve ever seen, hands down. The whole series in general has been one of the best I’ve ever seen, I’d probably put it right behind the 2001 World Series (the outcome sucked, but holy cow was it entertaining). I was too young to really appreciate the 1986 or 1991 World Series. We can only hope tonight’s game is half as good as last night’s. Yay baseball!
Anyway, here is your thread for the night. Game Seven starts at 8pm ET and can be seen on FOX, and there are no other local sports teams in action. No excuse for not watching now. Talk about the game or anything else you want here. Enjoy.
(video of Gary Thorne’s great call (“Hello Game Seven! Goodbye Home Run!”) via ESPN Front Row)

Sharks-Red Wings tonight.
Exactly. I don’t get the enthusiasm for any of this.
Yay Baseball?!!! You’re a few heat shields short of reentry Rocket Dan.
If the Cards win tonight..we’ll have to listen to baseball punidits and fans talk about how the Cardinals have won it twice in five years while the Yanks only won once with less money blah blah.
On the other hand, Texas winning and NOlan Ryan will be a champion again..yuck.
Entertaining Series yes, but dont you think the quality of play has been sub-par for a world series?
yup
That sucked
how much would the cards chances of winning be if they had a healthy Wainwright?
Can someone give a good reason why Gary Thorn is not the FOX play-by-play guy? And no, nepotism is not a good reason.
Carpenter seems up immediately
*antlers*
Carpenter looks awful
Not good
Berkman is a statue out there
Chris Carpenter has come out really flat…
Freese has to be taking here…
This game would kill me if I was a Cardinals or Rangers fan.
This entire series would be a killer.
It kills me the Yankees aren’t here.
The good news is… nothing in this game will surprise anyone.
See Freese doubled. Not remotely shocked.
Here we go again!
This series man.
Freese!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
David Freese, the St Louis kid.
David Freese is all sorts of adorable and awesome.
This dude is just unconscious at the plate right now…
CJ Wilson will earn or lose $20M depending on how good of a LOOGY he is tonight…
/Buster Olney’d
David Freese is both beyond baseball and written in the stars.
WS 2011 championship motto “We didn’t win because we were good, we won cause we just sucked the least”
I hate that music teacher. I’ve been trying to pitch a virtual perfect game for years…
I had AJ Burnett pitch a perfect game in 2k9 against the Marlins…
I threw one with Randy Johnson (on Opening Day!) in MVP 2005, and also threw one with a computer generated player I recruited in MVP 2006 NCAA Baseball.
Furthest I’ve gotten was the 9th inning against the Blue Jays with Andy Pettitte at the Sky Dome.
I’ve been playing baseball video games my entire life, and I’ve thrown TWO perfect games. That no talent ass clown knows nothing about the game and wins a million bucks in two weeks? Fuck him.
Pretty much my exact feelings. Plus, he thinks Bill Hall is good.
Yeah, seriously. What the hell is up with that?
+1 and the fact that he bought the game with the sole intention of winning the million dollars, using Roy Halladay against the Astros, and googled how to get Bill Hall(!!!) out makes it all the more ridiculous.
Amen, but you gotta admit it is funny
Bill Hall #feared
Pen has to be warming. He doesn not look good.
Is EJax a better choice at this point?
Idk, I’d never trust EJax in a big spot, unless I absolutely had to.
He lacks Carpenter’s veteran presents.
This is true. And TLR loves him some veteran presents.
How is someone like Jerry Layne umpiring game 7 of the world series? Do they not remember his disaster in the ALDS?
They don’t care.
If you’re talking about Game 3 NYY/DET, that was Gerry Davis, not Jerry Layne.
I had the same thought until I looked it up.
You’re right…my mistake.
This was great: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/bl.....lb-wp25792
Is it just me or does Kinsler get picked off A LOT? If I remember correctly he got picked of a couple time last year in the ALCS. I think he was Kerry Wood’s favorite target when he went on his pick off spree last year.
I feel like you may be onto something here, but cannot confirm. The local TX media would have you believe he runs the bases perfectly.
Kerry Wood did pick him off twice. Once in game 1, and once in game 5.
Pastadivingandrus is getting to be as fun as Pastadivingpedroia.
I was really hoping to see some to the Carpenter trash talk I’ve been hearing so much about.
Hughe Jackman is the man.
Holy shit Craig.
Allen Craig has done it again!
Why wasn’t Craig bunting? You have to play small ball in the World Series!
Effin’ Allen Craig man.
Tex catches that…
And that one.
OT: what happened to Marcus Thames? I know he was injured after he was signed, but what happens now? Is he just released, or what?
Was he signed to a multiyear deal? I don’t recall.
He becomes a free agent like everyone else.
Big Carp really settled down.
He’s at 63 pitches through 4 innings.
How did Atlanta agree to that trade and then not sign Tex to a long term deal? I still don’t understand.
Slow doesn’t even begin to explain the speed of Yadier Molina.
Gotta pinch-hit here. Too good an opportunity to pass up.
Disagree. You’ve got the lead, and Carp is more trustworthy than most of your bullpen.
If it were the fifth or sixth I would agree with you. Its tough
That bunt was so dumb. Inexcusably dumb.
NL baseball is spreading like the plague
Yes it was. In presight and in hindsight. Moreso in hindsight.
Indeed.
Go Big Carp!
Scott Feldman is now in for Harrison
At least Russa is not conservative, he remove Furcal and Schumaker from the top, perhaps he read this RAP. I am still upset that Girad did not move up Posada and inserted Montero for Martin.
/beating a dead horse’d
I especially like that he’s referring to “Girad.” Who is Girad? Is he Girardi’s doppelganger?
A horse that is beaten hundreds of times a day unfortunately. Such as the ‘narrative’ horse. Poor lad.
Huh, Jon Daniels is from Queens. I had no idea.
I know I’m a few innings behind on this, but when you call Michael Young “one of the best players in franchise history,” well, that says a great deal about how shitty your franchise has been.
And you thought Girardi liked giving away outs for free. WHy would you keep bunting when you’re up in the count?
Wow, 3 blown saves in one game for the Rangers bullpen last night. That’s ugly.
It’s really only 2; Ogando’s 6th inning bases loaded walk was counted as a blown save.
Nelson Cruz is being made a goat when it’s really Feliz’s fault.
Hopefully they don’t label him the new Bill Buckner
Heh, CC’s twitter acct got hacked: http://twitter.com/#!/CC_Sabat.....6129512448
Big opportunity for the Cards
Actually, Joe Buck, Berkman had a pretty damn good postseason last year. I’d say he made an impact.
What you expect Joe Buck to actually be correct when he blabs something?
Are they going to IBB Freese?
I’d consider it at least…this guy has been so good.
Yes they are.
If Feldman walks Yadi…
I’m kind of laughing.. I’ve been rooting for the Cardinals anyway just cause I hate the Antlers and Claw.
And that’s why you don’t walk the bases loaded. Molina’s OBP > Freese’s AVG.
Walked him
Remember in our game with Jerry Layne, CC wasnt getting that pitch either.
David N pointed out that Gerry davis was the ump in that game
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....nt-3106496
Oh well
That take took balls.
Ump blew that call. It was a strike.
If he’s consistent (and it seems like he has been in not giving the outside corner, but I don’t have anything hard to back that up), doesn’t really matter.
It’s not a consistent strike zone tonight. But, that was directly over the corner of the plate, knee high. One of those “perfect” pitches. The ump just blew it.
It was funny how McCaraver was running his mouth….until the replays. Then he shut up. His partner pretty much conceded that the umpire missed it.
Yeah, I’m not sure about the consistency any more after seeing this past inning.
But I still say that I’d rather have a consistent ump with a flawed zone than a guy who will call a pitch on the corner one way in one spot and another way in another spot. My mind always goes back to the Berkman at-bat in Game 2 LDS last year. Yeah, the pitch was on the corner, but the umpire hadn’t been calling the inside corner a strike all night – that wasn’t the time to start.
Russell Martin gets that called a strike because he can actually frame pitches.
But, but, he always calls the wrong pitch in key spots!!
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....nt-3106684
touche.
So if CJ:
gives up a hit -10M
gives up a slam -20M
gets a K +15M
gets an out +7M
walks in another run -13M
Let’s call it -15M on the HBP.
hit batter -15M
What about a HBP?
3 walks (1 intentional) and a hit by pitch
Mske that 2 HBPs
My goodness.
He hit him!
CJ Wilson just cost himself about $7 million with that pitch.
/Olney’d
It might be written in the stars for the Cardinals.
But that’s 1,000,000 miles away which is why it’s taken so long for us to see.
Good point.
Ummm no Wilson in the Bronx please.
To think, the Rangers were one strike away from winning the World Series TWICE last night.
Rangers had chances to close it last night and failed. Now it’s the Cardinals’ turn to try.
that is going to haunt those players for years to come.
CJ Wilson is the new Sergio Mitre for the Yankees next fall? As long as he’s cheap…
Not sure if serious…
Not serious.
Whew. So hard to tell these days.
C’mon Wilson compared to Mitre? That’s kinda obvious.
Have you seen some of the comments around here lately?
Not really but yeah they can get crazy. But Sergio Mitre and his suckiness in comparison to CJ Wilson just has to be in jest. I mean I hate the thought of CJ Wilson coming here but at least he’s had a couple of productive seasons.
That would have been out
It would have been off the top of the wall, maybe it bounces out, maybe it bounces back. Big catch regardless.
Given the Rangers luck it probably would have bounced back.
Nice Catch.
And once again Allen Craig makes another big play, this time with the glove.
While I agree that 2001 was probably a better world series (I was only five at the time), don’t you think that this might be the better overall season? IMO, 2011 is the most entertaining season I’ve watched… but then again, I’m only 15.
2001 was pretty epic. The Yankees had no business having a lead in the ninth inning of Game Seven, Arizona outplayed them the entire series.
All 3 Molina bros can have 2 world series rings after tonight.
Bengie got one with the Rangers when the Giants won.
Bengie and Jose were both on the 2002 Angels.
Jose was on the 2009 Yanks.
Yadi can get 2 with the Cards.
Crazy.
Figure this. 3 Molinas in a row will get a ring.
Guess Gus Molina didn’t help us this year
(I know he’s not related)
They are like the poster family for the American dream.
Rangers staff has issued 40 walks in this Series.
Breaks the ’97 Marlins record for most all time.
CJ Wilson could be nice looking if he ditched the ridiculous facial hair and bathed.
Nobody should be introduced to a razor before Derek Holland’s sorry excuse for a mustache.
I think that one can just be ripped off. With scotch tape.
hahaha touche.
TLR should be slapped if he brings Authur Rhohdes in.
One more out
Posnanski ran a Twitter poll asking for best player in Rangers franchise history.
Old Hoss Radbourn replied, “Woodrow F. Call.”
Epic win.
So, if the Cards hold on, who gets the MVP? It has to be either Berkman or Freese, right? Could we see 2 MVPs maybe?
***I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY IF THIS ENDS UP BEING A JINX***
Freese, no doubt from me.
No, you can only have co-MVP’s when the Yankees are on the losing end of the equation.
Schilling feels the same way. He should have been the sole MVP according to him.
Yes, either Berkman or Freese. Now stop being silly and asking questions like that.
No excuse me I’ve gotta go get my pimp hand strong for TLR…
More bunts!
Here comes that great bullpen.
Why no Scrabble?
Washington wastes Chavez to bring up Torrealba.
Good managers know how to waste players as well as outs.
Scrabble will face Hamilton whenever the time comes.
“Now the Rangers are trailing by 3 where the bunt is a good play” – McCarver
He’s such a good announcer, and such a good baseball mind…
To me the bunt even for a hit when your down by three and there’s already one out is a bad move. Especially when your a guy with some power.
And he has been hot in this series.
Scrabble might some day be a starter? Or is Buck making crap up?
If I had any idea how to actually spell his name i’d go look up his minor league stats on baseball-reference to see if he was ever a starter…but there’s a reason his nickname is Scrabble.
Was a starter for two years with Toronto – 11 games in 2009 and 12 in 2010 (plus two bullpen appearances). Was a starter in the minors as well.
You mean you can’t type Scrabble into the Baseball Reference search and find him? Try it.
He started almost exclusively the last two years, and was used only as a reliever this year.
Really? It’s probably just selective memory but I remember him coming out of the bullpen against the Yankees a couple times while with the Jays.
You can type “Scrabble” right into the search to get him. Common nicknames work. A-Rod, Fat Elvis, Big Papi, they all work. You can also type “Marc Rz” and it’ll get you there.
Never knew that…very good to know…
Is the Pope catholic?
To be fair, that is a gray area.
What we do know is that he’s a Nazi.
Wow haha, i didn’t realize how much this website’s sense of humor meshed with mine. Cause I legit burst out laughing as I read this, Idk I thought it was slightly more reserved here.
My mother is rooting for the Rangers because she doesn’t like the National League.
I mean, I don’t either, but she seems to have forgotten that these Rangers beat the Yankees last year in the ALCS.
Plus, I mean, we’re Democrats, so, ya know…
I had this exact conversation with a friend and fellow Yankee fan on FB the other day. He said he has been known to root for the Red Sox in the World Series because he doesn’t like NL baseball. I countered that was unacceptable and to learn to like NL baseball.
It is NEVER acceptable to pull for the Red Sox in the World Series. Ever. Even if they’re playing the Phillies (the appropriate action in that scenario is to take a sudden interest in cricket).
I know! You can see why I was trying to fix this as soon as I learned of it!
Before the season my best friend(who is a Met fan) and I said if the “experts” are right and it’s a Sox Philly World Series we were just going to pretend that there was no World Series and hoped to hell we’d have football to be interested in.
As soon as all the “experts” said it, that erased the possibility.
My dad rooted for the Red Sox in 1986.
Quite frankly, I think that was understandable. That Mets team was so easily hateable, especially when you’re a Yankees fan.
I was not alive in 1986, so I don’t know how valid my opinion is but I would have rooted for the Mets. Simply because when it comes down to it, they were playing the Red Sox. THE RED SOX.
Yea, it was definitely a “you had to be there” situation to understand it.
That Red Sox team wasn’t so filled with assholes and douchebags, despite the presence of Clemens and Jim Rice and Bob Stanley (who just sucked, as he proved in Game 6).
That Mets team was filled with young hot-dog types (Straw, Doc, HoJo, Kevin Mitchell, Roger McDowell), d-bag vets like Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez and Ray Knight, annoying pitchers like El Sid and Jesse Orosco, and an out and out degenerate called Lenny Dykstra.
Jeez, and I left out guys like Wally Backman and Ron Darling.
Cardinals are in the same spot the Rangers were in last night. Six outs to get, up three runs.
Only they have a bullpen that IS better than Texas’s..period.
Glad you said period. I had some doubt.
Berkman seems to be getting all sorts of luck out there.
lol wtf
Hahaha, god if that wasn’t a ball then Berkman is out by a good ten yards.
Wow, the Rangers are averaging just under six walks per game. That is just terrible.
Insurance for the Cards!
This one just might be over.
Oh Yadi. You RBI stat padder.
OK, we have to start calling that the Nolan Ryan Face.
http://i.imgur.com/6vJTW.jpg
For the life of me I’ll never figure out why we let a guy like Big Puma go in favor of Nick Swisher. Berkman has put Swisher to shame this postseason and we certainly could have used him protecting Robbie Cano.
Because we don’t have a crystal ball and he liked the NL better.
Because Swisher OPS’d almost .100 points higher than Berkman last year, for cheaper, and better fielding.
Have you seen Berkman in RF? Ouch.
Yeah, but who really saw this year coming from Berkman? Decent postseason aside, he looked done last year.
Good ‘un.
Swisher is younger, better defensively, and has a better upside than Berkman, who seemed to be on the downside of his career when he came to NY. Plus He didn’t want to stay.
Seeing as when the Yanks traded for him, he waived his ntc on the condition that his option would NOT be picked up, he probably didn’t want to return to the Bronx…but yea, he was a beast this year.
It was the same reason why we got him to waive his NTC, the Yanks promised Berkman that they wouldn’t tender an offer for him.
Lol. Berkman hit .248/.368/.413 last year including .255.358/.349 with the Yankees. Hahahahaha
Questionable move here
Take the name off the back of the jersey, and I’d swear that was Joba pitching for the Cardinals right now.
Joba with a full lumberjack beard.
Damn, complete with the inning-ending fist pump, too.
If Joba comes back like that, I’ll be happy.
I was kind of hoping for a game like last night tonight…
It took almost 100 years of WS to have a game like last night.
You might have to wait a while for one of those….
In my life I’ve been lucky enough to see some crazy baseball games…2001 games 3,4,7…2003 game 7…last night just to name a few lol
11 (10 currently) vs. 27. Ah, those numbers are music to my ears.
That is a LOT of defensive changes….
And there’s the sad Nolan Ryan face.
At least Nelson Cruz will always get free beers in St. Louis.
Congrats to the St. Louis Cardinals…11 World Series. You’re almost there
only 16 to go.
Congrats Cards
YCPB.
Not going to lie, I’m pretty jealous of Cardinals fans right now.
It’s only natural.
Awesome, Freese for MVP.
No question.
How about them Cards. Seriously.
It was meant to be.
Also, I wonder how Colby feels…
Written in the stars.
Congrats to the Cards!!!!
Now onto the Hot Stove!!!
Pujols signs….where?
Pujols stays in St. Louis, Fielder goes to the Nationals, or maybe Miami, CJ comes to NY or Texas, EJax goes to the other.
Pujols to the Cardinals
Fielder to the Cubs
CJ to the Blue Jays
Ejax to the Red Sox
Darvish to the Yanks
I think the Cubs get CJ.
Pujols re-signs.
I’m not sure that the Cards meet Pujols’ number. And he’s truly earned his next contract. He deserves to be paid.
I’m thinking, if not STL, then Chicago Cubs, LA Angels, and Toronto.
Washington could make the splash, to team Pujols with that young squad in need of a true leader. Florida doesn’t have the money, but Ozzie would love to make that splash teaming Pujols with Hanley and LoMo, and that young starting rotation. I don’t see why Pujols would entertain these, but you never know with baseball.
One last thing, 3 years in a row, Cliff Lee’s team doesn’t win the WS, after going into the postseason as the overall favorite. Bad luck maybe? But on 3 separate teams?
Flipped to the BYU/TCU football game which is being played in Cowboys Stadium. Seeing a bunch of Rangers fans looking sad and hugging and crying.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I feel good.
It is going to be a dark day at my office on Monday.
I would like to make a tasteless comment here, but I don’t wanna be a total douchebag.
Consider it implied.
Enjoy it.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a Texas-sized choke job.
this is karma for the death of that rangers fan
Shut up please. Its meant to be a celebration.
How is this karma for a terribly tragic accidental fall?
b/c their stadium is shit?
What is wrong with you? Go away.
TLR’s reaction was hysterical it looked like he got struck by
lightning or shot while the ball was in the air.
Ron Washington joins a group populated by Hughie Jennings, Wilbert Robinson, Charlie Grimm, Joe Cronin, Burt Shotton, Charlie Dressen, Al Lopez, Yogi Berra and Mike Hargrove.
its back to drugs for that scumbag.
You’ve got some issues.
Does Wash lose his job this off-season?
i hope he expires.
Back to back trips to the WS no they can’t fire him.
Selig visibly reading a congratulatory speech off the script. #lol
Fail.
Freese is the MVP.
Can Selig retire please, or get lost in the mall when he goes on his morning walk.
Wait, Freese gets a car too? I think he can afford to buy his own car.
That car is probably worth $115K, Freese probably makes $350K for the last 3 years after taxes. He could probably afford it, but thats still a lot of money for him.
Now I don’t have to watch Ron Washington dancing like he’s desperate for a bathroom. Life is good.
David Freese. Probably getting laid tonight.
watching all 7 games of this series proved to me that God exists.
i can sleep better now knowing that the right team won. also i hope all of rangers execs die a horrible death. i would do it myself if i didnt have kids.
Are you okay?
yes, i was reminded of that fan dying and posted my feelings. please understand, i’m bipolar.
Standing by for the “Hitler finds out the Rangers choked away the World Series” video.
HahHAhahAHhahAHhaHAHhaHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHahH AH haH Ah ahAHha H HA haH HA haH AH hhaahahAH Ah HA HAhahA H haH AH ha HAh AH Ah hA H hAH h ha Hah AH Ah hH ahHHAHAHAHAAHAH HAAHAHA
Fuck you.
Ron Washington “We didn’t give them anything, they beat us.” Well, except today you gave them two runs.
thanks both teams !
THIS KID AGAIN! Axisa- DO YOUR THING!
who made you boss?
If anyone’s up, stumbled across a link to Yu Darvish pitching live right now in the JPL.
http://www.justin.tv/asdfg585#/w/1981656384/2
I see what the hype’s about.
I’ve become a full on Texas/Nolan Ryan hater. So I am happy. Fuck them.
