Yankees sign Dewayne Wise

By

Saturday: Joel Sherman says it’s a done deal, the Yankees have signed Wise to a minor league deal. I assume he’s Triple-A Scranton’s starting center fielder when the year begins.

Thursday: Via Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees are in talks with free agent outfielder Dewayne Wise about a minor league contract. The 33-year-old is a terrible hitter (career .277 wOBA) but a fantastic defender regardless of metric.

This would be the epitome of a depth move. Greg Golson was released earlier today, and the duo of Justin Maxwell and Chris Dickerson are out of options, so the Yankees could lose all three before the end of Spring Training. That would leave Colin Curtis as the club’s only not terrible outfielder at Triple-A when the season begins. Wise is a guy that could come up, sit on the bench for three weeks in case of an injury, then get designated for assignment.

  1. My kinda team, Charlie. My kinda team.

  2. IB6 UB9 says:

Cespedes will probably start in Tampa, right? Just to get acclimated.

  3. He’s 33. And has always sucked.

Doubt he’s got much of his “athleticism” or “explosiveness” left.

  4. William says:

Okay, let’s make this clear. The Yanks WILL not get both Cespedes and Darvish, or they are just asking for trouble. Choose one, and hope the Yanks get him.

  5. Tyrone Sharpton says:

Very nice. Hope they can resign Golson MaxDick as well. Sign Jackson and this will be a grate offseason, no dout

  6. Max K says:

    “What a play by Wise!!”

  7. Wise is gonna save AJ’s perfect game, you guys.

    • Sarah says:

AJ’s gonna have a game where he doesn’t walk anyone? Can you also tell me what tomorrow’s winning lottery numbers are going to be?

  8. Jumpin' Jack Swisher says:

Love having a guy like this stashed away. Great glove.

Everybody else is shopping at Tiffanys and we’re shopping at K Mart, unbelievable, George must be rolling over in his grave. Pleasr stop posting these nobodys like there’s something of interest with all these players that will never amount to anything. What a buzz killer when I read the headlines and I see what the Yanks aren’t doing.

    • Thomas Cassidy says:

It’s a Yankee website. For Yankees news. It includes signings. They’ll probably trade for a shitty player soon, and sign another. It’s still news.

        T.C.,
U ARE PROBABLY RGT.WHAT EVER IS LEFT THAT EVERYONE ELSE DOESN’T WANT,CASHMAN WILL JUMP ON THEM & TO MAKE ROOM,HE WILL NOT HASITATE TO UNLOAD A COUPLE OF(24)YR.OLDS.WOW,BIG NEWS,YANKEES ARE IN TALKS WITH “OF WISE.”reading this headline,u would think that every team in both division’s are bit’ng for this guy..cashman must be sweating on this one!!

    • Ted Nelson says:

What part of .277 career wOBA and minor league deal made you think the article was implying Wise is a big deal? Every team signs guys to MiLB deals. The Angels and Marlins will probably approach and sign guys to fill out their AAA rosters too, and fan blogs will probably mention it.

      • tono says:

        ok Ted N.,
what makes this sound like a big deal is the way it’s written,”NY in Talks with OF Wise.”what im upset about is,Wise is(33)yrs.old & Greg Golson(24)yrs.old.what im reading on the two, neither one can hit but they can field.
now my point is,one is (33)yrs.old the other is (24(yrs.old.
don’t u keep the(24)yr. old instead? Greg can alway’s improve on his hitting,Wise at(33)well time has run out for him..

        • Mike Axisa says:

It’s not an either/or situation. Golson was on the 40-man roster and was out of minor league options, so they couldn’t send him to the minors next year without putting him on waivers first.

Wise was a free agent they signed to a minor league contract.

    • tono says:

      bankers hours,
u hit the nail rgt. on the head.Cashman is doing the same s#$%t as last yr.how do u let(3)24yr. olds.walk & go after a(33)yr. old who can’t hit & never did.oh i see,he’s a great glove.i didn’t like cashman last yr.& i sure as hell don’t have any use for him this yr.i guess he doesn’t mind coming in second best!!did he fall on his head while coming dwn. the 101bldg.in stamford?oh that’s rgt.he didn’t cause if he did it would of knocked some sense in him!!

  10. mrpappageogio says:

AJ will start 30 games cause the new ownership mentality runs contrary to paying whatever it takes to get him to leave and fill his spot with someone effficient. They’ll actually have him pitch to his 5+ ERA because it makes the most fiscal sense. This is the new era in which we now live.

    • Ted Nelson says:

Yankees are so cheap… They only spend more than everyone. They should spend more than everyone else combined and put 60 men on the 40 man roster. If Chuck Norris can do it, why can’t they?

  11. tbord says:

Dan Brewer, Melky Mesa, Austin Krum, and Ray Kruml should all make it to AAA this year. While they are not major prospects, by any stretch, they are home-grown. I can’t remember the last time the Yankees AAA affiliate had an outfield that was entirely home grown.

  12. Larry Bradfield says:

Since when is .277 a terrible hitter?

  13. R.D. Frable says:

Wise is quite familiar with Allentown and the other Intl League cities where the AAA Yanks will play ‘home’ games while their stadium is being renovated…
