Sherman: Yankees will watch Zumaya’s showcase next week

By

Via Joel Sherman, the Yankees are one of about ten teams that will watch Joel Zumaya throw next week. He hasn’t pitched in nearly 18 months after fracturing his elbow during a pitch, an injury that required two surgeries. Zumaya is still only 27 years old and is about as good as bullpen reclamation projects get, but obviously it’s minor league contract for bust. There’s just no way they could guarantee him anything given all his health troubles.

2012 version of Mark Prior? Hope they sign him (minor league deal of course) and see how much/little he has left.

  2. Paul from Boston says:

If he’s still sitting 97-99 mph, you don’t think one team offers an incentive-laden MLB deal? The Yankees have spent 500k+ in many worse ways.

    In before everyone says pass.

  4. Thomas Cassidy says:

If he learns to throw from the left side, I could see Cashman giving him a 3/12.

Seriously though, I’d offer him a minor league deal. Worst comes to worse, he declines, signs with another team, and then plays in 30 games the next two seasons.

A mL contract with an opt-out that he can exercise after a predetermined date if he isn’t on the ML roster.

With the Yankees depth in the pen, he’d know that he wouldn’t be rushed, and if he demonstrates he’s healthy and his stuff is back, he’s too good not to force himself into any pen.

    • Cris Pengiucci says:

Excellent way to approach the situation. I imagine the Yankees would consider that type of contract for him.

  6. Jumpin' Jack Swisher says:

A no-brainer here, although I expect him to one day wake up and find his arm lying on the bedroom floor.

I was thinking the same thing, that hiws arm could fall off at any time. Remember that Giants’ pitcher who broke his arm while making a delivery? I think he had cancer but I am not sure. There is no harm in giving him (Zumaya) a minor league contract if he accepts.

No harm in giving Zumaya a minor-league deal. If he seems healthy, you could give him an incentive contract.

Not that the Yanks necessarily need him, but a guy with that stuff joining the team mid-season to the already amazing pen the Yanks have would make it a 4 inning game.

  8. Juke Early says:

F these @#%&*! reclamation projects every @#%&*! season. What’s the good of having a GM that can’t close a deal. This is @#%&*!. Make. A. Deal. Or admit you can’t cut it anymore. Go to Japan and commit Seppuku like a man.

  9. CG says:

“I can’t stand the Yankees, man, and I’m going to go right after them,” he said after an outing in which he hit 100 mph on the radar gun. “But that’s just part of this game. I’m going to go right after guys.”

When asked by John Keating of Fox Sports Detroit what he doesn’t like about the Yankees, Zumaya said, “there are little things about them I can’t stand. They’re just the Yankees.”
