Diana Munson at Jorge Posada’s Retirement Press Conference

The Yankees knocked it out of the park with Jorge Posada‘s retirement press conference today, the entire event was extremely well done. Diana Munson, Thurman’s widow, stole the show with her three minutes at the podium I thought, so I’m passing along the video here if you missed it.

  1. 2 things that I didn’t like during today’s presser…and I know they will both (to some degree) sound insensitive.

    1) All of the Spanish questions. I get it, he’s a prominent speaking Spanish-speaking ballplayer, so an entire community is eager to hear what he has to say, but while watching it seemed annoying. Possible to have a separate set of questions for the Spanish media?

    2) The mother of the kid with craniosynostosis…her speech was a bit long and draw out. It was a nice touch, but…and I guess it’s not her fault…she was a ‘drip’ as a speaker.

    • Mister Delaware says:

Thank god the kid with the disease’s mom didn’t speak spanish, huh?

      • Yankeegirl49 says:

The kid with the disease’s mom is a friend of mine. She is a school teacher and very smart. She was also extremely nervous. Imagine getting up in front of that room and having to make a speech in front of the media and players..I would imagine you’d be nervous too.

As to the topic..I met Mrs. Munson when I volunteered at the Posada Foundation dinner, at the request of the “kid with the disease’s mom”. She was the most personable, friendly person I have ever met and it was a true honor.

        • Mister Delaware says:

(I’m hoping my sarcastic agreement with the initial post didn’t come off as serious.)

          • Yankeegirl49 says:

It did..if I wasn’t I apologize. People were saying some nasty stuff on twitter while she was speaking, so I guess I am responding to that. Again, I apologize.

            • Mike HC says:

I thought it was more a little goofing on Matt’s comment than anything to do with the mother’s speech.

              • Yeah, that was def poking fun at me, which I don’t mind at all…I actually thought it was clever.

Let it be known though I wasn’t making fun of the mother or the kid in any way. I was just saying it really brought the whole thing to a screeching hault cause it dragged on.

      • Mike HC says:

ahahahaha … that was funny ha

I’m happy when I see an international presence at MLB events, it means the sport is strong and has a large talent pool.

  2. vin says:

Yeah, she rules. I always get goosebumps when she, and the other yankee widows are announced at Old Timer’s Day. It’s great they keep these women in the Yankee family.

  3. Darren says:

That was a fuckin’ classy speech!

  4. JohnnyBGoode says:

I didn’t like the fan video montage. Felt tacky.

    • Mike HC says:

I disagree. I enjoyed that a lot (although I agree with Axisa that Diana Munson has the highlight). I thought it was very on target and honest that Yankee fans loved his intensity, determination and the way he played the game. The fan perspective was a good touch, in my opinion.

  5. Yankeeforlife says:

one thing i didn’t like about the press conference was how posada mentioned to all his puerto rican fans posada was only born there he never acknowledges the fact that his father Cuban or that his mother is dominican i get offended since im dominican. other den that it was a very emotional n im very sad to see him go.

  6. Now Batting says:

Retire doesn’t look so bad when you’re going to sleep with that every night.

  7. Yabba Dabba Doo says:

The highlight is Laura Posada’s nip-on, viewable starting at 2:21 in the video.
