Yankees avoid arbitration with Brett Gardner

By

The Yankees announced that they have avoided arbitration with Brett Gardner. Jon Heyman says it’s a one-year deal worth $2.8M, exactly the midpoint of their filing numbers ($3.2M and $2.4M). I had a feeling Gardner would settle at some point; he doesn’t have a great arbitration case because defense doesn’t pay, so the only thing he has going for him are the steals. Russell Martin and Boone Logan are the team’s only remaining unsigned arbitration-eligible players.

  1. What are the odds that they sign Martin to a multi-year deal?

      • CountryClub says:

I think they would sign him to a 2/15 type deal. But I dont think they’d want to go past 2 years.

        • gc says:

Agreed. It’s definitely more than a “zero” chance. Not a lock, by any means, but I could see them doing more than one year if the price is right.

          • CJ says:

Based on past practice, yanks dont offer extensions. Russell Martin hardly seems like the player worth changing policy.

            • Needed Pitching says:

the Yanks don’t offer extensions to players under contract, Martin isn’t under contract yet
they did extend Cano before (and technically they just extended CC)

            • RetroRob says:

This would not be an extension. This would be a new contract, something he’s going to sign one way or the other. The choices are a new one-year contract or a multi-year contract. The Yankees have signed players to multi-year deals while they are still arbitration eligible.

I don’t know what the percentage chance the Yankees will sign Martin to more than a one-year deal, but it’s certainly much higher than zero.

Waiting for someone to say “I miss when Brett Gardner was cheap”

  3. Thinking man says:

Question to the RAB Universe: Let’s assume he continues playing a strong defensive left field, if Gardner hits .260, with a obp of .350 and steals 45+ bags would you be happy with that? Do you expect more? Someone like Jacoby Ellsbury was a speed first player until he smashed the ball last year. I don’t think of Gardner as that type player, but did anyone expect Ellsbury to have such a year? Your thoughts…

    • CJ says:

Yeah you have to be happy with that. Expecting him to become ellsbury is simply unfair. He’s very good at what he does why should he have to become an MVP?

    • Tampa Yankee says:

I’d take him at those numbers for sure. However, on 8/15 he was at 286/366/409/775 before a slow decline to his final numbers. I think he could stay around there with the defense and steals which would make it even more beneficial.

      • Thinking man says:

I agree, I’d be ok if Gardner posted the numbers I originally said, but there’s just something about him that screams to me that he can be better. Maybe it was his performance in the playoffs but I see he has the ability to bat in the high .310/.380-.390obp/50+ steals. I don’t see him breaking out the way Ellsbury did, but now that he has a couple of years under his belt maybe he can surprise us.

        • thenamestsam says:

I doubt he could put up those numbers for a full season, but I think something like a .375 OBP might be achievable and would make him one of the very best players in the major leagues. I just hope if he does have that kind of offensive season that we get to see him at the top of the lineup.

  4. Gonzo says:

What do you think Brett’s big purchase will be because of this news?

He strikes me as a, “I’m buying my parents a ______.”

  5. CMP says:

Imagine Phil Hughes gets $3.2 million after 3.2 WAR the last 2 seasons and Gardner gets $2.8 million after 11.2 WAR the last 2 seasons.

This is one time where the organization lucked out.

    • Platano Man says:

Oh yes, remember that Hughes throws from the mount and Gardner from the outfield. Since when position players are more valuable than pitchers ?

      • All Praise Be To Mo says:

Where is the mount? Is that where Phil put on the extra 40 lbs he was carrying last year? Or was that from Joba’s cooking?

    • G says:

Averaged 5.6 bWAR over the past 2 seasons. If he repeats that they’re getting a WAR per $500k… Talk about good value. Now if only that applied to the while team, we’d have a 420 WAR team XD.

  6. Matt DiBari says:

I’m very interested to see what Logan gets.

Of nothing else than for a new reason to curse my right handedness

  7. RetroRob says:

I wonder if any of these cases will go to arbitration? I suppose Martin might try and push it, yet the value he brings in defense is hard to define in arbitration. My guess is they all settle, with a chance the Yankees actually sign Martin to a contract. If Romine appears ready to take over, they won’t have difficulty in trading Martin. Skilled catchers are always in demand.

  8. monterowasdinero says:

Still 17.5M less (about) than Carl Crawful.

    The Great Brettsky!

  9. nedro says:

Who ever said Grit doesn’t pay?
