Piniella officially joins YES Network

By

Back in December we learned that Lou Piniella would be joining the YES Network, a move that was officially announced today. Piniella will be a “special contributor” to YES, working 20-30 events throughout the season. “I’m honored and excited to join the Yankees network and be part of the Yankees family again,” said Piniella in a conference call. Sweet Lou will work as an analyst in the booth — including Spring Training games and on Opening Day — as well pre- and post-game work from the studio. He’ll also contribute to YESNetwork.com and do a CenterStage.

Just in case you were wondering, Piniella laughed when asked if he was gunning for Joe Girardi‘s job. He made it clear that he’s retired from managing and loving it, though he is looking forward to getting to camp to see some of team’s young players. Piniella mentioned Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova by name. Hopefully that leads to more enjoyable broadcasts throughout the spring and regular season.

    Woohoo!!!

  2. RetroRob says:

For the love of god, please put Pinella and O’Neill in the same booth at least for one series. Who knows what might happen.

  3. Scully says:

    Hey that’s pretty cool.

Personally, I’m a huge Girardi fan but I’ve seen a lot if detractors on RAB. If things went wrong and team doesn’t make playoffs is Girardi gone? Would piniella interview? Predictions for next Yankees manager? Tony Pena, Randolph?

    • CMP says:

Mattingly is honing his craft in LA until the Yankees need a new manager.

    • GardnergoesYardner says:

I’m not the biggest Girardi fan because I always thought that Mattingly should have gotten the job, and I’m not a fan of how he comes off as a serious guy who can’t connect with his players. However, I respect him for identifying that problem after 2008 and making a wholehearted attmempt to become a looser and generally a friendlier guy. I think there is no scenario in which he is not manager after this year. He has a clubhouse with a lot of high profile players, which at times is harder to control than younger players, and protects their reputation and personal life very well.

However, assuming he was to be let go, I think Pena is their first choice because of familarity of the organization. I’d assume Piniella might be asked, if he’s back working with the team. They would probably pursue Randolph too. The Yankees love their own guys, and that’s part of why Torre was initially rejected.

      • JohnnyC says:

        When was Torre initially rejected?

      • CJ says:

Girardi was a better manager than mattingly in 2008 and he’s even better now.

      • CJ says:

You’re right that he can be too serious but that wasn’t the problem in 2008, it was Sydney Ponson on the mound, that team was built to fail.
I think if they are losing, his style will be considered too tight, boring, and restrictive. Randolph makes sense as the next manager.

        • GardnergoesYardner says:

I agree that if they start to lose, the media will start to paint him as they did pre 2009. But the 2008 team wasn’t necessarily built to fail. The offense should have been better, but the pitching was a problem. They took a major chance by starting IPK and Hughes in the rotation, which backfired. The team wasn’t built too fail, it just did. The same could have been said in 2007 if they missed the playoffs.

        • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

There was an issue of Yankees magazine in maybe August or September of 08 with Melky on the cover. This, of course, was after he had been set down to the minors that year.

  5. swishers fauxhawk says:

    I’m okay with this.

  6. sandy g says:

the next yankee manager after girardi run is over just like torre run cam to a end,so will girardi.the next yankee manager ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????? don mattingly

  7. Meh. Maybe it’s my relatively young age, but I feel like I’m one of the few who just isn’t enamored with Pinella in any way.

  8. Manny's BanWagon says:

I love the addition of Pinella to YES.

Singleton, Cone, O’Neill, Leiter, Pinella should all be good color men. Now if they can only get rid of the duller than dull John Flaherty and get some eye candy to replace Kim Jones, they’ll really be in business.

  9. Peter North says:

I’m positive one day Jorge will manage the Yanks.

  10. Pinade is greata says:

Pinella will punch micheal kay in the mouth before the year ends.
