Charleston turns triple play in comeback win

By

D.J. Mitchell nearly threw a complete game shutout last night, and that earned him to top spot on today’s Minor League Update (subs. req’d). “Scouts think he could be effective as either a back-end starter or middle reliever,” wrote Kevin Goldstein, “as while he’s on the small side, he’s ultra-athletic and features a fastball that has slightly above-average velocity and plenty of movement. He’s not going to be a star, but he should have big league value, even on a championship-level roster.”

In other news, the Yankees have signed Nelson Figueroa according to the right-hander’s Facebook page. The 37-year-old Brooklyn native and former Met will help chew up some Triple-A innings. This might be an indication that Manny Banuelossore back will keep him out a little longer than expected. Either that or Ramon Ortiz is already sick of all the travel.

And finally, Neil Medchill has been promoted to Double-A Trenton. Dan Brewer has been placed on the phantom DL to make room on the roster.

Triple-A Empire State (5-3 win over Rochester)
CF Ray Kruml, LF Dewayne Wise & 1B Steve Pearce: all 1-4 — Kruml stole two bases and scored two runs … Pearce hit a three-run homer and struck out
C Frankie Cervelli: 0-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
DH Jack Cust & 2B Doug Bernier: both 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K — Bernier doubled, drove in a run, and committed a fielding error
3B Brandon Laird: 0-4, 2 K
RF Colin Curtis: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB
SS Ramiro Pena: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 CS, 1 E (fielding)
RHP Adam Warren: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 7/6 GB/FB – 61 of 101 pitches were strikes (60.4%)
LHP Juan Cedeno: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1/1 GB/FB — ten of 15 pitches were strikes
RHP Manny Delcarmen: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1 WP — six of ten pitches were strikes … not exactly sure why he came out of the game, it’s a little odd that he was lifted for another righty after facing just two batters
RHP Jason Bulger: 0.2 IP, zeroes, 1/0 GB/FB — seven pitches, four strikes
RHP Kevin Whelan: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 12 of 19 pitches were strikes (63.2%)

Double-A Trenton (6-2 loss to Harrisburg) former Yankee farmhand Chris Garcia came out of the bullpen for Harrisburg
LF Abe Almonte, 3B Ronnie Mustelier & CF Melky Mesa: all 0-4, 1 K
RF Zoilo Almonte: 0-2, 1 K, 1 CS — left the game with a tweaked hamstring, he’s day-to-day … Neil Medchill went 0-2 with a strikeout after coming off the bench
1B Luke Murton: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
DH Cody Johnson & 2B Walt Ibarra: both 1-3, 2 K — Johnson drew a walk and scored a run … Ibarra doubled
C Jose Gil: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
SS Addison Maruszak: 1-3, 1 BB
LHP Josh Romanski: 7 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 7-6 GB/FB — 64 of 99 pitches were strikes (64.6%)
RHP Michael Dubee: 2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 23 of 32 pitches were strikes (71.9%)

High-A Tampa (5-2 win over Daytona)
CF Eduardo Sosa: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HBP — I swear, it’s either a multi-hit game or an 0-fer with him
2B Kelvin Castro: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 E (fielding)
LF Ramon Flores: 1-5, 1 K
RF Rob Segedin: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K — 12 for his last 37 (.324)
1B Kyle Roller: 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
C J.R. Murphy: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (throwing) — another guy that like Sosa, has been hot or cold early on
3B Zach Wilson & SS Jose Mojica: both 1-4 — Wilson scored a run and struck out
DH Shane Brown: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 K
RHP Jose Ramirez: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 3/8 GB/FB — very nice, good to see him have a solid start
LHP Vidal Nuno: 2 IP, zeroes, 3 K, 3/0 GB/FB
RHP Manny Barreda: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1/1 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (9-8 win over West Virginia) they turned a 6-3-2-5 triple play in the third inning … too bad there’s no video, that sounds fun
CF Mason Williams: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB — quietly has an 11-game hit streak … has a hit in all but one game this season
2B Angelo Gumbs: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 K, 1 E (missed catch) — hit a grand slam to cap a six-run comeback in the fifth
C Gary Sanchez: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 SB, 2 E (throwing, pickoff) — dude stole two bases all of last year … he has five steals on the season after stealing four total from 2010-2011
RF Tyler Austin: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K — 19 for his last 35 (.543) with five doubles, three triples, and three homers … he has the highest OPS among all prospects to appear in Baseball America’s 2012 Prospect Handbook, so we’re talking 900 of the best minor leaguers in the world
LF Ben Gamel & SS Cito Culver: both 1-4 — Gamel struck out once, Culver thrice … Cito also stole a base and committed a throwing error
DH Rey Nunez: 0-4, 1 K

RHP Mariel Checo: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 1/1 GB/FB — 25 of 37 pitches were strikes (64.9%)
RHP Pedro Guerra: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 37 of 51 pitches were strikes (72.5%) … had seven strikeouts in seven innings coming into this game

      What the baseball?

Dude has probably been watching video of Russell Martin or something. Channeling the Sneaky Speed.

    • Oliver says:

Thank you. For some reason I read the entire post except for the Sanchez line and Mike’s subsequent commentary. Thank you for this insightful comment.

    • Kvothe says:

Catcher’s stealing too many bases can’t be good for the wear and tear of the position! Nice to see the display of athleticism, though.

  2. Frankeee1 says:

    Any news on Bichette?

  3. Eric says:

It’s strange to see Sanchez stealing so many bases. I can’t imagine he has gotten any faster, but maybe he’s getting better instincts. He had a rough day behind the plate though, 2 errors plus 5 runners stealing successfully.

  4. Bryan__from NZ says:

Could be getting SBs mixed up with HRs for Gary Sanchez.

  5. Derrick says:

Mitchell teased me with the first game jem. Guess its back fat strikes in the middle of plate.

  6. Chen Meng Wang says:

I guess there’s no tape of the triple play?

  7. Bo Knows says:

Is bichette injured? He hasn’t been playing much this week

  8. Bernard says:

This Charleston team is AWESOME!!!! By mid-season some of them [Williams, Sanchez, Austin, Bichette or Campos] may be promoted to Tampa? Whaddayathink?

    • DM says:

By mid-season I can see Williams being fast-tracked. I’d add Sanchez to that list but they won’t have both Murphy and Sanchez at Tampa. But I’m sure all of them will get at least a taste of Tampa by the end of the season.

      • Havok9120 says:

I think one of Austin or Dante is a candidate for the fast track as well. Depends on if they want to see Austin getting reps at 3B or if they’re happy with him in the OF.

        • Plank says:

I got the impression that Austin is in RF because he couldn’t handle 3b, I could be wrong though, I’ve never seen any of these players in action.

        • DM says:

I think the change for Austin is permanent as it fits the Yankees needs better. I don’t think he’ll be fast tracked b/c of the position change and the fact that he didn’t get the playing time Williams did last year. But who knows? If he keeps hitting like this anything is possible.

        • Ted Nelson says:

Agree on Austin being a promotion candidate. Moving to High A at 20 is not even a particularly fast-track for a real prospect coming out of HS. That sets him up to be in the majors at 23 or 24. He has maybe the best swing in the whole system (I would say he or Sanchez) and a fairly advanced approach… a natural hitter, so challenging him makes sense.

          • YankeeGrunt says:

And Segedin is a semi-prospect repeating High A at 23, it’s not like they’d be destroying his development by making him split time with Austin at 3B or RF, depending on what the Yanks think is Austin’s long-term home.

      • Michael says:

Explain the reasoning for your presumption that an undersized 20 year old would be fast tracked. The differences between low-A and A are nominal, so why the rush to promote players who by all accounts are developing better than can be reasonably expected?

        • DM says:

He gained more than a few pounds over the off-season but why would you qualify it with “undersized”? It’s about performance and the big team’s future needs. Like Ted mentioned, sending a 20 yr old (who’ll be 21 in August) to Tampa mid-season isn’t rushing a top prospect. And the rationale is in your own words “developing better than can be reasonably expected”. If that’s the case why is promotion to nominally different level a bad thing? The number that stands out with me thus far for Williams is his lack of strikeouts compared to last year. He seems to have made a serious stride in his hitting already.

  9. STONE COLD Austin Romine says:

Special group of kids these prospects down in Charleston are.

I’d love for them or at least a solid group of 5 to all move up together when the time comes.

    • Ted Nelson says:

Pretty tough to keep 5 kids together. Even 2 is tough. You’ll almost necessarily be holding some guys back and/or pushing other guys too hard. Newman has said a bunch that every prospect is evaluated individually.

I also don’t know how much value being promoted together has. If you spend 4 or 5 years usually at the same level as another guy, how much more will you really bond in an extra few months? 2 of these guys being long-term Yankees is a long-shot, even 1 might be a long shot. And adapting to new circumstances on their own without those other guys can be an import learning experience for the player and for the organization.

  10. RetroRob says:

So where’s Dante? I thought I’d go check out his Twitter account, but just noticed that’s now gone too. That has to be recent. Anyone know why he shut it down?

  11. I'm sexy and I Cano it says:

Any timetable on when Slade Heathcott’s going to come back? And what can we expect from him when he returns?

  12. Jesse says:

Don’t know if anyone else posted this yet, but the River Dog games from the 24th-27th are on MiLB.tv.

  13. Plank says:

I can’t remember following a better Yankees minor league team than the current RiverDogs. It’s even better that the team is owned by Bill Murray. That can be used in a topper in any baseball argument.

  14. Brian in NH says:

Man Cito is really struggling. only hitting .175 on the year with a triple slash of .298/.175/.473. I know its only been a handful of games, but when you’re a first rounder and you’ve got a bunch of other high profile prospects looking good, its got to be a little frustrating. I really hope he can pick it up soon. 3 K’s in a game is pretty bad…

    • Brian in NH says:

oh wait…those lines was for his last 10 games only. but hitting .146 with .255/.146/.400 isn’t much better. and 19 K’s in 12 games…ouch. Williams only has 2 on the whole young season.
