Game 16: Messin’ with Texas

By

No high fives for you. (Leon Halip/Getty Images)

Maybe it’s the 2010 ALCS, maybe it’s terrible articles like this, maybe it’s something else entirely. I just want the Yankees to pound the Rangers this week. Just completely wreck them on offense and dominate them on the mound. It’s unlikely to happen because Texas is really, really good, but I want it to. I want the Yankees to crush them so bad that come Thursday, the Red Sox will look at the Rangers and say “damn, glad we’re not them.” That bad. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
3B Alex Rodriguez
1B Mark Teixeira
CF Curtis Granderson
LF Andruw Jones
DH Eduardo Nunezhe’ll still make an error
Chris Stewart

LHP CC Sabathia

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on My9 locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

  1. CS Yankee says:

    We can do this!

  2. victor rosa says:

    The Yanks will prevail

  3. E from NY says:

It’s hilarious how hard Texas is trying to make us their rival. With Nolan Ryan’s comments last year, this horribly written article, etc., it comes off as trying way too hard.

    • Havok9120 says:

Everyone does this when we show up. They treat every game with us like its the biggest game of the year, treating it like its some historical rivalry when we don’t even give a crap. Then they get offended when we don’t give a crap and they call us elitists.

    • GardnergoesYardner says:

I don’t know, I feel like Texas is a better rival than say Boston. They’re a legit team that has really challenged the Yanks and come into their own recently. Both sides have had memorable moments in the playoffs, and right now these are 2 for the best 3 teams in the AL. I’m not saying their fanbase is right in trying to make us into their rival, but on skill alone, these clubs can go back and forth.

      • Mike Axisa says:

I want the Yankees to win these games more than I wanted them to win at Boston, but I don’t consider the Rangers rivals. I guess they don’t play each other often enough and aren’t on the same playing field. Their division is so much easier.

        • Havok9120 says:

To me, its that last one that hurts their case the worst.

        • CS Yankee says:

In a way, they reminded me of the Rox…solid sticks with little pitching playing in a hitter’s heaven against a league that is pitcher park friendly.

However, over the last 3-4 years they have gotten solid pitching from the starters to the closers. They are a top 5 team no-doubt…they’ll win the divison, unless Yu & Holland have woes that is.

        • GardnergoesYardner says:

You have a point with the division. I guess it depends on what your defintion of a rival is. I think of a rival as someone who you have a history with (these clubs certainly do) and are equally matched with. The intra division Red Sox Yankees games, as good as some are, have in large part become irrelevant over the course of a season mostly because there are so many. They’ve both made the postseason only once in the past four years, and aside from some good regular season games, have 1978, 2003, and 2004 as great postseason meetings. For the amount that people hype those two up, that’s really nothing.

I’m not saying that the Yankees-Rangers is the next great rivalry, but it should be given some respect, as it is probably is good in terms of the games as Yankees-Red Sox.

          • Professor Longnose says:

There’s some history there, too, from the 90s. But the Sox-Yanks thing has so many moments in the bank.

        • jayd808 says:

Eduardo Nunez — he’ll still make an error
          ******************************
How do you get to write these putdowns of Yankee players on a Yankee site? You’re such a childish punk. “Editor in Chief” my ass.

  4. Havok9120 says:

    The Nunez joke was funny.

That article is insane though. We’re one of the only two teams with a statistically better offense, but pay no mind to that. Don’t even mention it.

    Sigh.

    • CS Yankee says:

He’ll make a baserunning error trying to tag up at 2B with Jeet running as we try to score 7 runs in back-to-back innings in back-to back-games; so we’ll only score 13 tonight (in those two innings).

  5. Pat D says:

I’m sure Mike found the article himself, but it feels cool that I highlighted that article in the series preview post and it’s linked again here.

Be forewarned if you haven’t read it, though.

  6. GardnergoesYardner says:

Although we handled Texas last year, 2010 was a dogfight and will always be remembered when I think of why I hate the Rangers. That September sweep, with the Cruz walk off homer, the Mo hit batter walk off, and the Lee shutout still makes me angry to this day. Plus that ALCS was completely winnable. The Yanks need to show who’s number 1 here, and put the Rangers in their place.

  7. CS Yankee says:

Whoa, just read the link…isn’t that the same d-bag that compared the Candian Winter Olympics to Hitler’s ’36 summer games? What a freckin’ tool.

He lists a phone number…hmmm, maybe we should all call him up and verbally beat him down like the step-child he is.

  8. flamingo says:

I’m still laughing at “DH Nunez – he’ll still make an error.”

  9. Chen Meng Wang says:

Wow, that article hurt my brain. Btw, I’m kind of laughing at Nunie DHing.

    • CS Yankee says:

Nunie at DH makes sense, dude is raking…

and its not like he’ll come off the bench for a bat because he’ll need to play the field (or you spend two players for one at-bat).

  10. Chen Meng Wang says:

Does Holland still have that little ‘stache?

  11. Hank says:

Sigh… I shouldn’t be this annoyed that Frankie Cervelli’s name is missing from the starting lineup.

  12. Peter North says:

“All free agents with check books…” what does that even mean?

  13. RetroRob says:

Holland’s on my fantasy team, but tonight I must root for a beating, although I’ll take unearned runs.

  14. SevenAces says:

    The Captain setting the table.

  15. Pat D says:

Good, now I can take the *active notation off Pudge for my Sporcle quizzes.

  16. Chen Meng Wang says:

Hooray for live look ins :)

  17. SevenAces says:

Cano smoked that one, not long before he starts to get locked in.

  18. Mike Axisa says:

Wipe that fucking mustache right off Holland’s upper lip.

  19. mustang says:

“DH Eduardo Nunez — he’ll still make an error”

Thanks Mike my kid is now cover in water after I LOL!

  20. Mike HC says:

Am I the only one watching on My9 with terrible sound and a poorly lit picture?

  21. luisergi says:

A’rod should be hittin’ 5th against lefties, just sayin…

  22. Mike Axisa says:

    Kill them all Tex.

  23. Cy Pettitte says:

    set the MT25 to annihilate

  24. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

Hey the shocker cant mess up DH or can he?

  25. Greg says:

Got to get at least a run here…

  26. jjyank says:

Wow Holland has a real bad look going for him. Consider him on my dislike list.

  27. Clyde Barrow says:

That’s it. Make him throw a lot of pitches. We always destroy Holland.

  28. Chen Meng Wang says:

    TEX SUCKS

    /sarcasm :)

  29. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

There is a bug on hollands upper lip.

  30. Greg says:

Good pitching from Holland. Went away from using his sinker exclusively to confuse Tex

  31. Professor Longnose says:

Granderson! I’d have felt lousy if they didn’t score there.

  32. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Teh Clutch in RISP!!

  33. Cy Pettitte says:

    Grandy!

  34. jjyank says:

Way to fight that off into shallow center Grandy! Good start.

  35. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

    The grandyman can

  36. Clyde Barrow says:

That was not a strike on the inside corner to Grandy. Completely changed the AB from 2-0 to 1-1. But Grandy got a hit anyway!

  37. Ari Gold says:

Not a Granderslam but I’ll take it.

  38. Mike Axisa says:

Curtis says fuck your two-strike count.

  39. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Atta boy, Curtis.

  40. Mike HC says:

That hit brought back nightmares of 2001 luis gonzalez hit off Mo. I think that just popped into my head because Mo was interviewed on ESPN talking about that hit earlier today.

  41. Ethan says:

Good, keep them shut up in texas

  42. Rookie says:

The 1-0 pitch from Holland to Granderson was a strike??????????!!!!!!!????????

    • Ethan says:

Apparently, sure didn’t look like one.

      • Rookie says:

Was WAY past not looking like one. It WASN’T one! — unless they changed the strike zone to be marked by the lines for the batter’s box while I was sleeping.

By the way, it looked like the 1-1 pitch to the first batter proved that it’s only a strike against the Yankees for Holland, not against the Rangers for CC.

    • Rookie says:

Let’s see if this umpire calls a ball on the inside line of the batter’s box a strike for CC.

  43. Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

They can’t let him off the hook now.

    More runs!!!

  44. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

    Keep the line moving andrew

  45. jjyank says:

CC + having an early lead + Texas heat = optimism

    • TomH says:

I’ll feel better if he’s putting something on that FB and putting it where it’s supposed to go. These two opening singles are too familiar this season

  46. Chen Meng Wang says:

I hate Sterling, how many times has he been to this ball park? and he doesn’t know where the pitch counter, or radar gun are? These should be things a broadcaster finds before the game starts.

  47. flamingo says:

There’s a whole lot of expletives on the Texas game thread :) Baseball fans everywhere are apparently all prone to early overreaction!

(Oh yeah, and they all hate that Yankees fans showed up to the game. AWESOME.)

  48. Greg says:

    Hung changeup

  49. jjyank says:

    Ugh not a great start.

  50. Greg says:

    Fastball down the middle

  51. Pat D says:

    Come on, CC.

  52. SevenAces says:

Is it my memory, or do I only remember Rangers for their friggin’ bloops and dribbles?!

  53. Clyde Barrow says:

Good DP there. Nice job by Robbie.

  54. Chen Meng Wang says:

Shit, I’ll take a one pitch double play against Hamilton allowing a run to score every single time.

  55. jjyank says:

I’ll take it. Tex makes that throw better than most first basemen.

  56. Greg says:

Trade the DP for a run

  57. Pat D says:

Andrus tried to pull a Reggie Jackson, using his head instead of his hip.

  58. Ethan says:

Wow total scum move by andrus

    • Chip says:

I actually like that play, he knew it was the only way for him to get to second but can you imagine if A-Rod ever did that? It would be the lead story on Sportscenter

  59. mustang says:

I want them to make Mr. GIL LEBRETON play for being a front running ass.

  60. RetroRob says:

    Nice recovery.

BTW My9 seems to have more of a problem on its feed handling the bright sun on the field. The contrast is off on My9. Too dark at times. Seems strange since I’m guessing the My9 team is the YES team, and they’re as good as any network in quality, many times better.

  61. Mike Axisa says:

Nine pitch inning. Score moar runz

  62. Havok9120 says:

That was a really good recovery by all involved.

  63. jjyank says:

Good work CC. Runners on the corners with no outs and the heart of the order coming up? I’ll take only one run.

  64. Pat D says:

Young’s hitting .403? God, I so fucking hate him.

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

Why? Besides being a great player on another team?

      • Pat D says:

Because he constantly has his dick sucked by the media. Everyone always talks about how he’s such a great team player when he’s been a little whiny bitch and demanded a trade, not once, but twice, when he’s been told to move to another position because the team acquired a better player (Andrus and Beltre).

Also, I believe someone said last year that during a Rangers/Yankees game, the Rangers announcers were going on and on about him and saying that if he played in New York, he’d BE Derek Jeter.

        Yea…..

        • Chen Meng Wang says:

You cannot control what other people say about you, positively or negatively. Also, I have no problem with after being moved in 3 consecutive seasons on the field, and then to DH (after proving you’re an above average fielder) asking to be traded. Shit, unless I was on the Yankees I’d probably do the same thing.

          • Pat D says:

Right, the point is that he did it, which means that he’s not a team player. It means he’s just out for himself.

He’s also made a bunch of public comments over the years that have pissed me off.

He’s also really not that good of a player. Go look at his home/road splits sometime.

            • JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah a 35 career WAR ain’t good at all.

            • RetroRob says:

Some of the words that can be used against Young have been used against Jeter by fans of other teams. Yet I basically agree with you. Jeter is a first-ballot HOFer. Young is not going to the HOF. He’s Jeter-lite. He’s been reatly helped by his ballpark throughout his career, and yes he whines.

          • Needed Pitching says:

            above average fielder??

            • RetroRob says:

No. Below. I think he was actually good at second, although maybe I just believed the press clippings. He was poor at SS and worse at third.

  65. BK2ATL says:

And just like that, CC kills the “big” inning. Good job.

  66. Rookie says:

Home plate umpire Tim McClelland must either be biased or blind.

  67. Chris A says:

Damn I hate this team, their fans, and their managment, let’s go Yanks, kick the shit out of the rangers this series

  68. SevenAces says:

Any hit from Stewart is gravy on top. I’m fine if he just stands there and does his best Nick Johnson impression.

  69. flamingo says:

This is a great at bat by Jeter.

  70. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

Jeter needs to buy gary debow a house foe fixing him last year.

  71. Mike Axisa says:

What an at-bat by Jeter. Dude’s a monster.

  72. Tom Zig says:

who is this person, and what did they do with Jeter

  73. Clyde Barrow says:

40+ pitches in 2 innings. They’re wearing him down and in the 4th or 5th they’ll knock him out.

  74. Chen Meng Wang says:

    I hate you John Sterling.

  75. vin says:

    I hate Sterling.

  76. Pat D says:

    Fuck you, Kay.

    • RetroRob says:

The ball was hard hit, but coming off the bat I thought that ball was going to the warning track, which is what it did. The sun made it a challenge. Another over-call by Kay. Still not as bad as Sterling. I can see what’s happening on TV and ignore Kay’s call. I’m at Sterling’s mercy with radio.

  77. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Gosh darn.

  78. Hummingbird S. says:

    that was unfortunate..

  79. Greg says:

Jeter’s at bat saved that inning

  80. SevenAces says:

    Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

    JOSH HAMILTON!!!
    Y U no make ERROR?!

  81. Sdjohn says:

    Geezus Kay calm down.

  82. Bartolo's Colon says:

To Kay’s defense (Sterling cannot read a fly ball for his life), that thing just seemed to die, I thought he crushed it.

  83. Zanath says:

Michael Kay with the John Sterling call.

  84. Greg says:

Not watching. Was it a full rob

  85. Greg says:

    Where was that 1-0 pitch?

  86. TomH says:

Like to see CC get that fast ball faster.

  87. Pat D says:

    Where was that 2-2 pitch?

  88. jjyank says:

At least we’re getting Holland’s pitch count up. Though we are playing the team that subscribes to the Nolan Ryan School of “I didn’t need no stinkin’ pitch counts, so neither do you”.

  89. SevenAces says:

Yeah, Teixeira gloves that one 99.99999% of the time.

  90. Needed Pitching says:

Nunez should be playing short ;)

  91. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

    Dammed nunez er jeter

  92. RetroRob says:

The curse of Nunie. Even when he’s not in the field, his presence impacts the other fielders.

  93. Hummingbird S. says:

    Derek Nunes

  94. Pat D says:

Nice, Derek. Nunez could have done that.

Though I will say I’m getting sick of Teix constantly swiping at those one-hop throws.

  95. BillR says:

    Damn it Nunez!!!

  96. Chen Meng Wang says:

Jeets doing his best impression of The Experience.

  97. Randi B says:

    I’m a bit confused… how is that an E-6… Why isn’t it an E-3???

  98. SevenAces says:

    I forgot all about Goomba(Beltre).

  99. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

    Sabathia sqeezed by ump.

  100. Chen Meng Wang says:

CC through 2IP with just 25 pitches. Nice.

  101. flamingo says:

CC looks good. The strikezone doesn’t.

  102. Nom Chompsky says:

    Jesus.

Nunez really did make an error from DH, didn’t he.

  103. jjyank says:

Now let’s expand the lead on these flapjacks!

…figured I might as well get on that bandwagon.

  104. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

The ranger love on espn is worse than the old redsox love.

  105. Will says:

Argh. I hate first half Cano. It’s like having Ramiro Pena batting 3rd.

  106. Countryclub says:

I’m not sure who Phil Rogers works for, but he just tweeted that Cashman told him in the spring that he offered up Cano twice before he got promoted. I assume most of us know about offering him for Arod in the TX deal. But I hadn’t heard about offering him to KC for Beltran. They even played him at 3rd so the KC scouts could see him there. They took Buck and Teahen instead.

    • Mike Axisa says:

I thought they offered him for Randy Johnson too.

      • Countryclub says:

I guess when you don’t have many legit prospects you’ll offer up a good one until someone bites. Luckily for the Yanks, nobody did.

        • RetroRob says:

I’m not sure Cano was so much offered, but he was one of a collection of players Texas and Arizona could have asked for, yet neither did. Wang, too, could have been had by the DiamondBacks. Just confirmation on how difficult it is to project players who aren’t clear superstars.

  107. flamingo says:

Nice at bat by A-Rod, too. Holland’s at 53 pitches.

  108. SevenAces says:

Good AB, burn a bunch of pitches and get the walk/hit.

  109. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Damn, well that’s a rally killer…

  110. jjyank says:

I thought RHB Tex was supposed to be the good one?

  111. Hummingbird S. says:

crappy ABs by Teix so far… but in general the Yankees are looking good

  112. Will says:

That was the most predictable DP ever. Thanks Tex.

  113. Chen Meng Wang says:

CC looks really good tonight. I’d love some more runs, but as of right now I don’t think he needs them.

  114. Hummingbird S. says:

    slider is nasty tonight

  115. BK2ATL says:

CC Boss-Hogging it tonight!!! Ace time!!!

  116. Tom says:

Sutcliffe just compared Josh Hamilton to Mickey Mantle on the ESPN telecast

I thought he was quickly becoming one of the worst color commentators in baseball… I was wrong – he already is.

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

Incredibly gifted baseball player with a horrid personal problem. I’m not saying its a perfect comparison, but I’m not saying it’s not there at all.

      • Tom says:

Except he didn’t even mention personal problems (or injury problems)… he was comparing them from a baseball perspective.

        • Tom says:

He also went into the “unseflish” narrative and saying it all starts with Michael Young…. until Adams called him out on that bullshit and reminded him of his traded demands last year.

        • Chen Meng Wang says:

I mean, I’m nowhere near old enough to have watched The Mick play but I’d have to imagine in comparison to their peers Mantle was much better than Hamilton is.

  117. Havok9120 says:

My God. I’m over at the Rangers blogs just poking around. The Sox fans may be insane, but the Rangers fans are just angry. At everything.

  118. SevenAces says:

    Hah! Suck it YOUNG!

  119. Will says:

Bad at bats so far by everyone but Grandy and Jeets. Everyone is getting pitched a certain sequence of pitches designed to get them out and they’re all falling for it.

  120. Professor Longnose says:

So glad Ibanez isn’t out there.

  121. Mike Axisa says:

    C’mon six pitches Stewart!

  122. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

Cowboys stadium looks like a UFO crash landed.

  123. jjyank says:

Haha how do you walk Chris Stewart?

  124. Havok9120 says:

Man, those balls their hitting to left look sooooooo good off the bat. Its scaring the crap outta me.

Annd. They just walked CHRIS FREAKING STUART.

  125. Cy Pettitte says:

Stewart walks and sees a ton a pitches, that’s awesome

  126. Monterowasdinero says:

Stewart table setter. And now the bunt from our hall of famer.

  127. RetroRob says:

Stewart really screwed up there, but he got lucky.

  128. Chen Meng Wang says:

What in gods name just happened? I’m totally happy with the results but what the shit?

  129. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

    Stewie ?????

  130. Cy Pettitte says:

    don’t try that anymore Stewart

  131. Mike Axisa says:

Chris Stewart just makes things happen.

He’s also lucky Andrus dropped the ball.

  132. Will says:

What do the Rangers plan to do with all their outfielders? They’ve got Hamilton, Cruz, Murphy, Gentry and lots of prospects knocking on the door like Julio Borbon and Leonys Martin.

  133. jjyank says:

Jeez, they should have had him. Lucky break.

  134. Monterowasdinero says:

Chris Stewart: you can only hope to contain him.

  135. Professor Longnose says:

If Stewart had taken off when the throw got loose he probably would have made it, but he hesitated and didn’t know what to do.

    • RetroRob says:

That’s what made it crazy. He should have hesitated because he’s dead-ass slow. He needs to see if the ball is going far away. Then when he saw it was only a few feet away, he made an actual decision to try for second.

Yet he sits in the dugout scoring a run. All good. Just don’t do that again.

    • Needed Pitching says:

      he did leave right away
he just got hip checked by Napoli as he started to run

  136. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Note to self: add Chris Stewart to fantasy team.

  137. Cy Pettitte says:

    retro Jeter is best Jeter.

  138. RetroRob says:

I don’t even think Brett Gardner would have taken off for second with the ball only five feet from first.

  139. Ari Gold says:

Jeter with another hit. What in the blue hell is going on right now.

  140. Bartolo's Colon says:

I think cashman got a deal on jeter’s contract, lets extend him until 2020

  141. jjyank says:

    Garbage time sac fly.

  142. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

    Stewie stewie he just wins

  143. Will says:

    MOAR RUNZ PLEAZE!

  144. Monterowasdinero says:

    DJ4K.

    New handle for me?

  145. your mom says:

Derek Holland looks like a child molester with that cheesy stache.

  146. jjyank says:

    My God, Holland is ugly.

  147. Ari Gold says:

This is Yankees baseball right here. Everyone starting to see the ball better. Work those counts. Very happy with what I’m seeing right now.

  148. Monterowasdinero says:

Cano is getting ready to carry us. Soon.

  149. Chen Meng Wang says:

    an A-Bomb. From A-Rod :)

  150. Greg says:

    An A BOMB!

  151. Cy Pettitte says:

    Abomb!!

  152. Pat D says:

    FUCK YEA A-ROD!!!

  153. Needed Pitching says:

ARod with a HR against a lefty …. nice

  158. Robinson Tilapia says:

I believe our 13-3 Rangers can go suck it.

  159. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

  162. Bartolo's Colon says:

is that the most runs that the rangers have given up all year??? i love arod

  163. Chip says:

Looks like A-Rod misses hitting in Texas

  164. Mike Axisa says:

    That is more like it.

  165. BK2ATL says:

    A-Rod goes deep!!! 6-1 Yanks.

Love how Sutcliffe was already trying to get A-Rod out. Yeah….pitch him in!!!

  166. Ari Gold says:

  169. NoH says:

What was that about no hits on lefties?

  170. Chen Meng Wang says:

Mike, I know it’s still early in the season, but you still don’t think Alex will hit 30 this year?

    • Mike Axisa says:

I can’t bring myself to say yes.

      • Chen Meng Wang says:

I really hope you’ll never be more wrong than when you first said that. I mean, I respect your opinion and all but I was just floored when you said it.

        • RetroRob says:

You were floored when he said A-Rod wouldn’t hit 30 HRs this year? That’s not a stretch. Granted, last year was the first year he didn’t do it, but the two prior years he was just at 30 exactly and he is getting older. And, oh yeah, hitting is going down.

I think A-Rod will have another 30+ HR season, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he never gets there again. Age is age.

        • Mike Axisa says:

          I hope I’m wrong too.

First we ruin the 100th anniversary of Fenway, now we ruin Pudge’s retirement.

  174. Cy Pettitte says:

    fuck Josh Hamilton

  175. handtius says:

i know it’s just the first game, but Mike, the yanks doing exactly what you wanted so far. think they need a few more runs to really bludgeon them.

  176. Hummingbird S. says:

Hamilton killing us with his glove..

  177. BK2ATL says:

Fucking Josh Hamilton!!! Great player, all-around.

  178. Pat D says:

He totally misread that and he still friggin’ caught it.

  179. Preston says:

I want to beat the Rangers worse than the BoSox at this point. I just hate them so much.

  180. jjyank says:

  182. Mike Axisa says:

  183. Tom Zig says:

    Strikes out the side. NICE

  184. Tony says:

    CC back to ace form

  185. Karl Krawfid says:

It’s been 3 years since we’ve seen a Yankee team this good.

And its only gonna get better.

  186. Mike Axisa says:

  190. Cy Pettitte says:

    Stewart is a monster

  191. Chen Meng Wang says:

Chris Stewart is the best hitting non-hitting catcher ever.

  192. Mike Axisa says:

Chris Stewart just knows how to win.

  193. Esteban says:

    Does anyone honestly miss Cervelli?

  194. Greg says:

Mike, you got Chris Stewart mad

  195. Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

    Stewart needs a nickname.

  196. jjyank says:

    Chris MOTHERFUCKIN’ Stewart!

  197. DAiello18 says:

Chris Stewart with a double to the wall…. ALIENS!!!!!!!!!!

  198. Mykey says:

Chris(t) Stewart up in this bitch!

  199. Clyde Barrow says:

  210. Mykey says:

    Derek Jeter is unstoppable.

  211. Clyde Barrow says:

Derek Jeter will win the MVP this season.

  212. Bartolo's Colon says:

seriously, derek jeter is fucking awesome the last 10 months

  213. RetroRob says:

    Amazing.

This easily has to be Jeter’s fastest start ever.

  214. Needed Pitching says:

    insanity

  215. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

Stewie got get a chris stewart 19 before they are all gone.

  216. Hummingbird S. says:

Its simply stupid to have a lefty pitch to Jeter.. Cap is just amazing right now.

  217. Robinson Tilapia says:

Dexter Burgundy and the entire state of Texas can start to pucker up now.

  218. Kronk says:

My life will be complete if Jeter hits .400 for the season.

  219. Erica says:

    JETER WTF <3

  220. Mike E says:

The media is running through the narrative that Sabathia got mad in his last start, so now he’s pitching better… except last week he said Rothschild told him to get on top of the sinker more. Indeed, his sinker was performing more like a four-seamer according to pitchf/x, likewise the spin matched a four-seamer.

Now unless getting angry makes him throw the sinker at the correct angle, this has to be one of the stupidest narratives thus far.

  221. handtius says:

jeter just puts on a clinic against lefties. it’s kind of ridiculous.

  222. Preston says:

You know you’re not having a good night when Chris Stewart gets a double.

  223. Esteban says:

Derek Jeter is a good baseball player.

  224. Hall and Nokes says:

    DJ.400

  225. BK2ATL says:

Pour it on, fellas!!! Shut this Texas BS down right now. Humble these bitches.

Love, love, love hearing the strained praise coming from the mouths of these announcers. They don’t want to give the Yankees credit. They really don’t.

  226. Chen Meng Wang says:

Seriously, how is any lefty pitching anything remotely drivable to Jeter right now.

  227. jjyank says:

I know this is the Rangers here, but I’m surprised Holland is in there. He’s been getting hit real hard (even a bunch of outs were line drives), over 100 pitches, gave up 7 runs…

    • Mike E says:

They just had to deal with a doubleheader, and have Scott Feldman pitching on Wednesday which gives them one less longman. They need to conserve the bullpen.

  228. Tony says:

Do they want Derek Holland to be destroyed like this? I can’t believe he’s still in there

  229. Ivan says:

Wait….did the Yankees have a time chamber and switch 2012 Jeter with 1998 Jeter.

    • Havok9120 says:

That’s why we have to cut the payroll. Spent the Stein fortune on a time machine for the Old Dudes.

It was The Boss’ Master Plan.

  230. Chip says:

So at what point do we conclude that this is who Jeter is again? June?

  231. Greg says:

Chris Stewart definitely has more pop than Frankie Cervelli

  232. Professor Longnose says:

High socks: Everyone or no one.

  233. handtius says:

I think Mo finally gave Jeter whatever he’s been drinking for the past 15 years.

ALBATROSS CONTRACT!!!!!!! ah that reality potion must taste so bitter to all those ‘smart fans’ from over the last year or so…. they were so very smart about knowing jeter’s ‘true market value’

  235. Robinson Tilapia says:

The Texas Rangers: We leave our pitchers out there forever.

  236. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

Ok i got girardi saying stewie 3 times in the postgame.

  237. Cy Pettitte says:

down 7-2 quick set off the fireworks!!!!

  238. Mike E says:

Sabathia wasn’t angry enough on that pitch.

  239. Chen Meng Wang says:

Say what you will about this team, but Hamilton can straight launch balls.

  240. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

I love the fireworks in a 5-run deficit.

  241. Pat D says:

    Really? Playing The Natural music?

First of all, you’re losing 7-2 still.

Second of all, as my dad just said, Roy Hobbs didn’t have drinking problems.

  242. Chip says:

Obligatory Josh Hamilton home run, not much you can do about that

  243. I'm sexy and I Cano it says:

    You know what Hamilton?

Go eat a bag of dicks.

  244. Normando says:

    Nice “grassy knoll” reference Susan.

  245. jjyank says:

Don’t bother scoring off CC. He’ll just get pissed and shut it down anyway.

  246. Dela G says:

    josh hamilton, good at baseball

  247. NoH says:

I was kinda expecting that to happen at some point. Just be glad nobody was on base.

  248. Plank says:

Hamilton tried to take out another fan in the 3rd row with his bat. Upon failing, he tries to take out a fan in the outfield with the ball. He is one angry dude.

  249. jjyank says:

    Nice bounce back CC.

  250. Monterowasdinero says:

Chris Stewart is long limbed and skinny. Stick? Already taken. Tough nickname contest.

  251. Rookie says:

I respect Nolan Ryan a lot for what he’s brought to the Rangers. But I have to admit that it does my heart good to see him sitting there frowning. And it makes me even happier to see CC pitching so well and so efficiently.

  252. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Michael Kay — a legend in his own mind.

Speaking of which, Tim McCarver — Hall of Fame broadcaster?!

In a game two or three weeks ago, he said “Something nobody has ever talked about is…” He’s so amazing that not only does he know things that nobody else knows, but he even knows what everyone else has ever talked about, too. What a guy! No wonder he’s a Hall of Fame broadcaster…

  253. Plank says:

As per Fangraphs, Rangers current win expectancy is 4.3%. Still far too high.

  254. Karl Krawfid says:

    A-Rod is a click away from A-God.

  255. mike_h says:

damn, that would have been another HR

  256. Chip says:

That ball goes out next month

  257. Jimmy McNulty says:

Glad to see A-God getting back into the swing of things, they need him to hit well with Pineda out and Garcia and Hughes pitching terribly.

  258. Dela G says:

a-rod hit that out a mile. goodness

  259. Hall and Nokes says:

What was the deal there (on the YES broadcast, I think) about Hamilton making it public that he owes the Rangers nothing w/r/t his contract talks? I mean he has every right to take advantage of free agency, but he of all players has no cause to be a dick about it.

    • Chip says:

I didn’t take it as being a dick, he was just saying that he felt it was his right to go wherever he will get paid the most

  260. jjyank says:

Boo, can we have the 70′s porn star back?

  261. Mike Axisa says:

    Where are these pitches missing?

  262. Tom Zig says:

    CC getting squeezed

  263. Plank says:

Tim Kurkjian just said CC is heading to the HOF because his winning percentage with the Yankees is .3 higher than Whitey Ford.

    I…am speechless.

  264. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Gameday is broken :(

  265. Mike Axisa says:

    Yuck, ground-ball-down-the-lined to death.

  266. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Fucktards.

  267. Tony says:

These are the dinky rangers singles I remember so well

  268. Hummingbird S. says:

awful night for Teix… also, time to get the BP going, CC is done

  269. I'm sexy and I Cano it says:

    CC sucks. Cut him.

  270. Pat D says:

Hmm. Suddenly not so fuzzy feeling.

  271. Greg says:

There goes the quality start from CC

    • jjyank says:

      Possibly the dumbest statistic ever.

      • Chen Meng Wang says:

It really is the worst. I mean it’s ok for judging if a pitcher/staff is being terrible, saying that a staff has the least quality starts in baseball, you know their going to be bad. However a pitcher could go out and pitch 30 “Quality Starts” a season and have only pitched 180innings to a 4.5 ERA. That’s not a quality starter in my opinion.

        • jjyank says:

My biggest gripe is that according to the Quality Start statistic is it says 6 IP, 3 ER (4.5 ERA) is better than 9 IP, 4 ER (4.00 ERA). In what world is that okay?

          • Chen Meng Wang says:

I agree, It’s a halfway decent baseline to look at a a pitcher, but anybody who puts any serious stock in it is crazy.

        • Plank says:

There are worse stats. Certainly a pitcher can pitch well and not get a QS and vice versa, but if a pitcher has a high number of QS, that tells you something about a pitcher.

Runs scored is a less telling stat (data), in my opinion.

          • jjyank says:

True. But why is a quality start defined as at least 6 IP and no more than 3 runs? Wouldn’t it make sense to make it a game ERA of 4.5 or less? That way it would include 9 IP 4 ER scenarios and thus be a much more telling stat. I guess that’s why I hate it so much, it would be so easy for it to be useful, but it’s not.

            • Plank says:

Because it’s a dumb stat and makes no sense. I think what they are going for is measuring both the ability to keep their team in the game and the pitcher’s consistency from game to game.

  272. Havok9120 says:

Man, its been awhile since ARod and Tex missed close plays in the same inning.

    Sigh

  273. Dela G says:

damn CC just not getting the breaks

  274. jjyank says:

CC strike out this damn flapjack right this second!

  275. Hummingbird S. says:

    need to get andrus here…

  276. Tony says:

CC has pitched really well today, yet he still gives up 4 runs. That’s bad luck

  277. BK2ATL says:

Good job by CC to limit the damage. As much as it sucks to say, the Texas offense is really good. CC’s done a great job in limiting the damage at key moments.

  278. Dela G says:

great start by ZZ. maybe send him out there for the 8th if he wants to

  279. I'm sexy and I Cano it says:

On the bright side, now Mariano can get the save. Stat padding ftw.

  280. Chen Meng Wang says:

CC to face Hamilton to start the 8th or Logan to Robertson?

  281. NoH says:

It’s going to show as four runs in the box score, but CC really pitched better than that. Oh well, good to see a big performance against a tough lineup from the big man.

  282. I'm sexy and I Cano it says:

    Good job, Jon Lester.

  283. I am not the droids you're looking for... says:

Man I know Kruk is a complete Neanderthal who knows jack shit about things but jeez H wouldn’t it be cool if Jeter makes a real run at .400?!?

  284. Mike Axisa says:

Hey, the Red Sox blew their lead.

  285. Karl Krawfid says:

    Poor Boston

  286. Tony says:

Jon Lester just gave up two consecutive extra base hits on 0-2 and 1-2 counts and gave up 4 runs. That really would kill me if a Yankee pitcher did that

    • Rookie says:

Pretty shocking. Did I read something about a shoulder issue possibly causing Lester to melt down last September? (Or was that another Boston pitcher?) If it was him, maybe that could explain why the normally lights-out Lester has been so hittable of late.

  287. Tom says:

Sean McDonough just lighting up Rick Sutcliffe and pointing out his stupid comments.

“If I’m the Red Sox, I find some way to get Varitek back in the clubhouse and get his presence there. He’s the Michale Young of the Red Sox”

McDonough: “well, Varitek was there last September… wasn’t he?”

  288. Karl Krawfid says:

    Wooo big CC!

  289. Pat D says:

Uh-oh, Ottawa just got an EN goal with 38 seconds left.

  290. Chen Meng Wang says:

Nice quick inning from CC. I have no idea of his pitch count but let him finish :)

  291. Cy Pettitte says:

    nice outing from CC.

  292. TomH says:

Until my wife complained about the lack of synchronization, I was listening to Sterling and Suz rather than endure these yackety-yacksters who can’t shut up and insist on offering empty insights. Ma and Pa were far, far superior. They’re almost always superior to these network hotshots.

    • Professor Longnose says:

There should be a word for insights that aren’t insightful. Outsights? Unsights?

    • Rookie says:

I had the same reaction as you. Based on the little I could stand to listen to, I don’t think the ESPN guys could have been much more vapid if a computer had been randomly generating words from a dictionary for them to say.

  293. handtius says:

the ny rangers are about to lock gmes 6 up. game 7 is going to be intense.

  294. Plank says:

Tito stayed silent while the rest of the ESPN guys talked about the Red Sox woes.

  295. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

Wow, bad night to have a dinner to go to. Jeter is at .417 ?? Holy Sheet.

  296. Pat D says:

    They better not blow this.

  297. Chen Meng Wang says:

Sterling is joking that he thinks Mo could pitch another ten years. If he keeps himself in shape, I think he actually could be effective for another ten.

  298. handtius says:

ny ranger win it. last goal was total bullshite.

  299. Mike Axisa says:

And the NY Rangers live to see Game Seven.

  300. Pat D says:

I don’t know what these Ottawa fans are chanting, but they can go fuck themselves.

  301. Greg says:

The goal stood, but the Rangers won anyway 3-2

  302. BigDavey88 says:

Man, if the Sawx lose to the twins tonight I will be beyond thrilled.

  303. Dino Velvet says:

Jetes has been on fire since he broke up with minka.

  304. Don'tcha Know? says:

I think Ortiz is backing around .456 right now. This insanity HAS to stop. How can a former roider make such a grand comeback when he was never all that great prior to that initial injection?

  305. Monterowasdinero says:

Uehara the rare reliever who pitches from a windup with no one on. Soriano too.

  306. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

How long before the Sux Fans change the lyrics from “Sweet Caroline” to “Sack Valentine” ??

  307. forensic says:

Thank you Michael Kay for ruining my dvr’d rangers game for later… Bum.

  308. Karl Krawfid says:

  310. Electric Nunez aka the shocker says:

Tomorrow we crap all over darvish as we send Pia Mei to the mound.

    Swish makes the play!

  312. Buddy says:

Anyone have any idea why Granderson gets dropped in the order when they face a lefty?

Last year he hit lefties better than righties?!?!?

    • handtius says:

joe g wanted to split up the lefties.

    • Jerome S. says:

Some old dogma about a six hitter hitting better than a two or some bullshit.
The point is, it doesn’t matter. One of the most comforting things I learned about baseball in the past several years is that batting order has a very, very small effect on winning.

    • alittleblackegg says:

Look at who is hitting ahead of him in the order. It really doesn’t matter.

  313. mike_h says:

    1 out away

  314. handtius says:

no with the rare fly ball outs.

  315. Rookie says:

Wow. Five runs given up by Lester through 4-2/3 innings using 90 pitches!

Just what Bobby Valentine was hoping for — another night with three or four innings to be pitched by his bullpen…

    • Rookie says:

I heard that the Red Sox haven’t won since Bobby Valentine said what he did about Youklis.

Do you think the players are effectively going on strike until they bring back Francona?

      • Rookie says:

Speaking of digging holes, the Phillies’ Kendrick just gave up a four-spot in the first inning against Arizona. Down five to Washington with Lee on the DL and the team not scoring runs, that’s got to hurt.

        • Rookie says:

I know that they’ve got lots of players on the DL and that they’ve been awesome in the second half for the past couple of years. But could they actually dig themselves into a hole so deep that they don’t qualify for the post season?

If so, it would be a sweet irony given Lee saying his reason for not coming to the Yankees was that they were an old team and that Philadelphia gave him his best chance to win multiple rings.

  316. Karl Krawfid says:

    6 game road winning streak.

    OH YES.

  317. David N says:

It’s only one game, but it feels great to say it:

    Suck it, Texas.

  318. SevenAces says:

Not so fast, Texas. Shots fired!!!!

  321. I'm sexy and I Cano it says:

The Ranger’s parade has officially been shat on.

  322. Pat D says:

Awesome win. Tomorrow should be interesting.

  323. Ethan says:

Guess the rangers aren’t going 159-3 this year.

  324. Bob Stone says:

We are all VERY priviged to be able to watch Mariano Rivera pitch. To all you younger fans (and I say that as a guy who is older who has watched the Yankees for 57 years), I say don’t minimize what you are seeing. You will NOT see it again in your lifetime

  325. Jerome S. says:

    Let’s keep this up going into tomorrow. I won’t rest until we’ve given these Ranger’s a good old-fashioned ass-kicking.

  326. Karl Krawfid says:

wow what a play for the twins.

  327. Dino Velvet says:

    Let’s go Twinkies

    clap clap clap-clap-clap

  328. Havok9120 says:

    Time to hit up OTM.

  329. Bob Stone says:

    Mike Axisa,

I know I am breaking the rules. In the past I have emailed this kind of message to you, as I probably should do now. But I am a huge fan of RAB and the RABBIS and I am just really upset.

I love the work that you and the RABBIS do. BUT . . . I got really pissed off at you guys tonight over a samll problem that erased a comment that I wanted to make and it got OBLITERATED and DISAPPEARED!. I have had this problem before. I am not a rookie computer user but a network engineer. In the past, I have forgiven this issue, but I am too busy to deal with rewriting my comment. You need to fix this problem.

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Bob Stone

Mike – Oops – My comment went through but your site told me it would not – I am sorry to bother you and even more sorry to break the posting rules.

    • Paul VuvuZuvella says:

Sometimes, particularly from mobile devices, the site says You’re comment was not published, but if you hit refresh, you’ll see it there. Happens to me all the time. Mike must be writing the post game wrap up.

You think Mo is going to retire or keep pitching after this season?

      • Chen Meng Wang says:

Paul, I’m afraid our other convo about DMT got buried especially cause I had to leave work before I could respond, so I’ll just restate it here: I feel like the “proper supervision” would mean a doctors office and a setting like that would cause me to bug out, and like most hallucinogens I feel that would effect the whole DMT experience.

      • Rookie says:

Yeah. That happens to me all the time, too, from my computer and sometimes leads me to double post.

  331. Greg says:

Cody Ross ties it up with a 2 run homer

    • Foghorn Leghorn says:

no problem at all…Lester will turn it over to the pen soon..

      • Rookie says:

Disappointed to see Lester last seven and finish strong — retiring seven straight — completing the last two innings with a total of about 17 pitches. :( But I suppose I should be glad that maybe that’s an indication he’s not injured since I don’t think it’s right to wish harm on anyone — even a Red Sox pitcher. Lester is a cancer survivor, after all.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

        Leadoff triple for Caroll!!

  332. Eirias says:

    Haha. Triple.

    The misery continues in Boston.

  333. Greg says:

And the Boston bullpen is at it again…

  334. Foghorn Leghorn says:

good lord…1st batter faced by the sox pen gets a triple. you cant make this stuff up!

  335. Foghorn Leghorn says:

    Bard coming in….

  336. Greg says:

Damn it Twinkies you dont deserve to win

  337. Foghorn Leghorn says:

    quickly hating cody ross

  338. David N says:

    Freaking Cody Ross….

  339. Greg says:

Cody Ross homers again off Matt Capps and the Red Sox will probably win. DAMN YOU TWINKIES!

  340. David N says:

Bobby V takes out Bard for Aceves. If this backfires….

  341. Greg says:

Parmelee gets on with one out

  342. Kevin says:

Boston wins..yuck. Hate that you wasted a Triple but then again,it was Bard.

  343. Greg says:

Twins deserved to lose. Should have pulled Marquis after Salty got on base and with the heart of their order up and a man on third with nobody out they should have gotten a run in.

  344. Greggor says:

    I can’t believe how douche-a-rific that article was…
