Game 16: Messin’ with Texas

By

No high fives for you. (Leon Halip/Getty Images)

Maybe it’s the 2010 ALCS, maybe it’s terrible articles like this, maybe it’s something else entirely. I just want the Yankees to pound the Rangers this week. Just completely wreck them on offense and dominate them on the mound. It’s unlikely to happen because Texas is really, really good, but I want it to. I want the Yankees to crush them so bad that come Thursday, the Red Sox will look at the Rangers and say “damn, glad we’re not them.” That bad. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
3B Alex Rodriguez
1B Mark Teixeira
CF Curtis Granderson
LF Andruw Jones
DH Eduardo Nunezhe’ll still make an error
Chris Stewart

LHP CC Sabathia

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on My9 locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

    We can do this!

  • victor rosa

    The Yanks will prevail

  • E from NY

It’s hilarious how hard Texas is trying to make us their rival. With Nolan Ryan’s comments last year, this horribly written article, etc., it comes off as trying way too hard.

    • Havok9120

Everyone does this when we show up. They treat every game with us like its the biggest game of the year, treating it like its some historical rivalry when we don’t even give a crap. Then they get offended when we don’t give a crap and they call us elitists.

    • GardnergoesYardner

I don’t know, I feel like Texas is a better rival than say Boston. They’re a legit team that has really challenged the Yanks and come into their own recently. Both sides have had memorable moments in the playoffs, and right now these are 2 for the best 3 teams in the AL. I’m not saying their fanbase is right in trying to make us into their rival, but on skill alone, these clubs can go back and forth.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I want the Yankees to win these games more than I wanted them to win at Boston, but I don’t consider the Rangers rivals. I guess they don’t play each other often enough and aren’t on the same playing field. Their division is so much easier.

        • Havok9120

To me, its that last one that hurts their case the worst.

        • CS Yankee

In a way, they reminded me of the Rox…solid sticks with little pitching playing in a hitter’s heaven against a league that is pitcher park friendly.

However, over the last 3-4 years they have gotten solid pitching from the starters to the closers. They are a top 5 team no-doubt…they’ll win the divison, unless Yu & Holland have woes that is.

        • GardnergoesYardner

You have a point with the division. I guess it depends on what your defintion of a rival is. I think of a rival as someone who you have a history with (these clubs certainly do) and are equally matched with. The intra division Red Sox Yankees games, as good as some are, have in large part become irrelevant over the course of a season mostly because there are so many. They’ve both made the postseason only once in the past four years, and aside from some good regular season games, have 1978, 2003, and 2004 as great postseason meetings. For the amount that people hype those two up, that’s really nothing.

I’m not saying that the Yankees-Rangers is the next great rivalry, but it should be given some respect, as it is probably is good in terms of the games as Yankees-Red Sox.

          • Professor Longnose

There’s some history there, too, from the 90s. But the Sox-Yanks thing has so many moments in the bank.

        • jayd808

Eduardo Nunez — he’ll still make an error
          ******************************
How do you get to write these putdowns of Yankee players on a Yankee site? You’re such a childish punk. “Editor in Chief” my ass.

  • Havok9120

    The Nunez joke was funny.

That article is insane though. We’re one of the only two teams with a statistically better offense, but pay no mind to that. Don’t even mention it.

    Sigh.

    • CS Yankee

He’ll make a baserunning error trying to tag up at 2B with Jeet running as we try to score 7 runs in back-to-back innings in back-to back-games; so we’ll only score 13 tonight (in those two innings).

  • Pat D

I’m sure Mike found the article himself, but it feels cool that I highlighted that article in the series preview post and it’s linked again here.

Be forewarned if you haven’t read it, though.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I took it from the comments, I grab stuff out of there all the time.

      • Pat D

        Oh, cool. I’m flattered.

  • GardnergoesYardner

Although we handled Texas last year, 2010 was a dogfight and will always be remembered when I think of why I hate the Rangers. That September sweep, with the Cruz walk off homer, the Mo hit batter walk off, and the Lee shutout still makes me angry to this day. Plus that ALCS was completely winnable. The Yanks need to show who’s number 1 here, and put the Rangers in their place.

  • CS Yankee

Whoa, just read the link…isn’t that the same d-bag that compared the Candian Winter Olympics to Hitler’s ’36 summer games? What a freckin’ tool.

He lists a phone number…hmmm, maybe we should all call him up and verbally beat him down like the step-child he is.

    • Havok9120

Yes, that is the same guy.

  • flamingo

I’m still laughing at “DH Nunez – he’ll still make an error.”

  • Chen Meng Wang

Wow, that article hurt my brain. Btw, I’m kind of laughing at Nunie DHing.

    • CS Yankee

Nunie at DH makes sense, dude is raking…

and its not like he’ll come off the bench for a bat because he’ll need to play the field (or you spend two players for one at-bat).

  • Chen Meng Wang

Does Holland still have that little ‘stache?

    • CS Yankee

Maybe, but not on his face.

      • Chen Meng Wang

        Oh, it’s definitely still there.

        • David N

Good thing it’s on his face, because it shouldn’t be within 500 feet of an elementary school.

  • Hank

Sigh… I shouldn’t be this annoyed that Frankie Cervelli’s name is missing from the starting lineup.

    • Chen Meng Wang

Dude, Stewart is a first ballot HOFer, didn’t you see him raking the other day?

    • Mariano’s Pimp Hand

If Stewart hits like he did last time we’ll be saying Frankie who?

    • AndrewYF

You really shouldn’t. Frankie is a worse defensive catcher than Stewart, who by all accounts is excellent. Their offense is more or less a wash.

  • Peter North

“All free agents with check books…” what does that even mean?

  • RetroRob

Holland’s on my fantasy team, but tonight I must root for a beating, although I’ll take unearned runs.

  • SevenAces

    The Captain setting the table.

  • Pat D

Good, now I can take the *active notation off Pudge for my Sporcle quizzes.

  • Chen Meng Wang

Hooray for live look ins :)

    • RetroRob

Why is the ESPN feed blacked out for you?

      • Chen Meng Wang

It’s not, I’m online at MLB.tv, at work, no TV.

        • Havok9120

One cool thing: ESPN 3 is free on college campuses. I really, really appreciate that from them.

Doesn’t help you at all tho. :P

          • 28 this year

Is that why I get it free here? Sweet, one thing to like about ESPN.

  • SevenAces

Cano smoked that one, not long before he starts to get locked in.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Wipe that fucking mustache right off Holland’s upper lip.

    • SevenAces

I’m so blind, I didn’t even notice that ugly ugly ‘stache.

      • RetroRob

It doesn’t even deserve to be acknowledged as a ‘stache.

        • SevenAces

Yeah, it’s more like… Mold, fuzz, mildew and rot growing on something.

  • mustang

“DH Eduardo Nunez — he’ll still make an error”

Thanks Mike my kid is now cover in water after I LOL!

  • Mike HC

Am I the only one watching on My9 with terrible sound and a poorly lit picture?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

No, the audio on My9 is always terrible.

      • Mike HC

Yea, I couldn’t take it anymore.

    • Mike HC

Just moved to ESPN. Much better.

      • Chen Meng Wang

Usually in the NY area if the game is on MY9 it’ll be blacked out on ESPN

        • Mike HC

That is what I assumed, but apparently not.

      • RetroRob

        Words never before written.

  • luisergi

A’rod should be hittin’ 5th against lefties, just sayin…

    • Needed Pitching

      that’s still too high

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Kill them all Tex.

  • Cy Pettitte

    set the MT25 to annihilate

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

Hey the shocker cant mess up DH or can he?

  • Greg

Got to get at least a run here…

  • jjyank

Wow Holland has a real bad look going for him. Consider him on my dislike list.

  • Clyde Barrow

That’s it. Make him throw a lot of pitches. We always destroy Holland.

  • Chen Meng Wang

    TEX SUCKS

    /sarcasm :)

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

There is a bug on hollands upper lip.

  • Greg

Good pitching from Holland. Went away from using his sinker exclusively to confuse Tex

  • Professor Longnose

Granderson! I’d have felt lousy if they didn’t score there.

  • Chen Meng Wang

    Teh Clutch in RISP!!

  • Cy Pettitte

    Grandy!

  • jjyank

Way to fight that off into shallow center Grandy! Good start.

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

    The grandyman can

  • Clyde Barrow

That was not a strike on the inside corner to Grandy. Completely changed the AB from 2-0 to 1-1. But Grandy got a hit anyway!

    • Havok9120

He’s apparently gonna get that call tonight. He got it against every batter.

  • Ari Gold

Not a Granderslam but I’ll take it.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Curtis says fuck your two-strike count.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    Atta boy, Curtis.

  • Mike HC

That hit brought back nightmares of 2001 luis gonzalez hit off Mo. I think that just popped into my head because Mo was interviewed on ESPN talking about that hit earlier today.

  • Ethan

Good, keep them shut up in texas

  • Rookie

The 1-0 pitch from Holland to Granderson was a strike??????????!!!!!!!????????

    • Ethan

Apparently, sure didn’t look like one.

      • Rookie

Was WAY past not looking like one. It WASN’T one! — unless they changed the strike zone to be marked by the lines for the batter’s box while I was sleeping.

By the way, it looked like the 1-1 pitch to the first batter proved that it’s only a strike against the Yankees for Holland, not against the Rangers for CC.

    • Rookie

Let’s see if this umpire calls a ball on the inside line of the batter’s box a strike for CC.

      • Rookie

        Nope. See above.

  • Mariano’s Pimp Hand

They can’t let him off the hook now.

    More runs!!!

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

    Keep the line moving andrew

  • jjyank

CC + having an early lead + Texas heat = optimism

    • TomH

I’ll feel better if he’s putting something on that FB and putting it where it’s supposed to go. These two opening singles are too familiar this season

  • Chen Meng Wang

I hate Sterling, how many times has he been to this ball park? and he doesn’t know where the pitch counter, or radar gun are? These should be things a broadcaster finds before the game starts.

    • Havok9120

But then he can’t complain about it on the air….

      • Chen Meng Wang

Seriously, there will always be a special place in my heart for Mom and Pop Yankee, but it’s time to move on.

    • Pat D

I wonder if the sun/shade is causing any issues him being able to see them maybe?

    • Professor Longnose

      Plus he’s a lousy announcer.

  • flamingo

There’s a whole lot of expletives on the Texas game thread :) Baseball fans everywhere are apparently all prone to early overreaction!

(Oh yeah, and they all hate that Yankees fans showed up to the game. AWESOME.)

    • Havok9120

I loved the “let’s go Yankee” chant that they couldn’t totally drown out.

  • Greg

    Hung changeup

  • jjyank

    Ugh not a great start.

  • Greg

    Fastball down the middle

  • Pat D

    Come on, CC.

  • SevenAces

Is it my memory, or do I only remember Rangers for their friggin’ bloops and dribbles?!

    • Pat D

Their claws and antlers, of course.

      • TomH

        Bunch of rubes

  • Clyde Barrow

Good DP there. Nice job by Robbie.

  • Chen Meng Wang

Shit, I’ll take a one pitch double play against Hamilton allowing a run to score every single time.

  • jjyank

I’ll take it. Tex makes that throw better than most first basemen.

  • Greg

Trade the DP for a run

  • Pat D

Andrus tried to pull a Reggie Jackson, using his head instead of his hip.

  • Ethan

Wow total scum move by andrus

    • Chip

I actually like that play, he knew it was the only way for him to get to second but can you imagine if A-Rod ever did that? It would be the lead story on Sportscenter

  • mustang

I want them to make Mr. GIL LEBRETON play for being a front running ass.

    • Pat D

      Canadian Maple Leafs = swastikas.

  • RetroRob

    Nice recovery.

BTW My9 seems to have more of a problem on its feed handling the bright sun on the field. The contrast is off on My9. Too dark at times. Seems strange since I’m guessing the My9 team is the YES team, and they’re as good as any network in quality, many times better.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Nine pitch inning. Score moar runz

    • flamingo

Ten, I think? But your point stands regardless.

  • Havok9120

That was a really good recovery by all involved.

  • jjyank

Good work CC. Runners on the corners with no outs and the heart of the order coming up? I’ll take only one run.

  • Pat D

Young’s hitting .403? God, I so fucking hate him.

    • Chen Meng Wang

Why? Besides being a great player on another team?

      • Pat D

Because he constantly has his dick sucked by the media. Everyone always talks about how he’s such a great team player when he’s been a little whiny bitch and demanded a trade, not once, but twice, when he’s been told to move to another position because the team acquired a better player (Andrus and Beltre).

Also, I believe someone said last year that during a Rangers/Yankees game, the Rangers announcers were going on and on about him and saying that if he played in New York, he’d BE Derek Jeter.

        Yea…..

        • Chen Meng Wang

You cannot control what other people say about you, positively or negatively. Also, I have no problem with after being moved in 3 consecutive seasons on the field, and then to DH (after proving you’re an above average fielder) asking to be traded. Shit, unless I was on the Yankees I’d probably do the same thing.

          • Pat D

Right, the point is that he did it, which means that he’s not a team player. It means he’s just out for himself.

He’s also made a bunch of public comments over the years that have pissed me off.

He’s also really not that good of a player. Go look at his home/road splits sometime.

            • JobaWockeeZ

Yeah a 35 career WAR ain’t good at all.

            • RetroRob

Some of the words that can be used against Young have been used against Jeter by fans of other teams. Yet I basically agree with you. Jeter is a first-ballot HOFer. Young is not going to the HOF. He’s Jeter-lite. He’s been reatly helped by his ballpark throughout his career, and yes he whines.

          • Needed Pitching

            above average fielder??

            • RetroRob

No. Below. I think he was actually good at second, although maybe I just believed the press clippings. He was poor at SS and worse at third.

  • BK2ATL

And just like that, CC kills the “big” inning. Good job.

  • Rookie

Home plate umpire Tim McClelland must either be biased or blind.

    • Pat D

There is still a glean of pine tar in his eyes.

  • Chris A

Damn I hate this team, their fans, and their managment, let’s go Yanks, kick the shit out of the rangers this series

  • SevenAces

Any hit from Stewart is gravy on top. I’m fine if he just stands there and does his best Nick Johnson impression.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He’s like a pitcher. Just see as many pitches as possible.

      • SevenAces

I’d be happy if that AB lasted 6 pitches, but it was over before I could post.

  • flamingo

This is a great at bat by Jeter.

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

Jeter needs to buy gary debow a house foe fixing him last year.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What an at-bat by Jeter. Dude’s a monster.

    • Mike c

that reality potion must be some good stuff. cashman’s a genius

  • Tom Zig

who is this person, and what did they do with Jeter

    • TomH

Whatever they did with Jeter they ought to do with ARod

      • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

        Gary denbo dammed ipad.

        • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

Denbo was one of Jeters old managers , and helped jeter find his old swing that kevin long totally messed up.

      • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

Pinella should find Arod and fix him

  • Clyde Barrow

40+ pitches in 2 innings. They’re wearing him down and in the 4th or 5th they’ll knock him out.

  • Chen Meng Wang

    I hate you John Sterling.

  • vin

    I hate Sterling.

  • Pat D

    Fuck you, Kay.

    • RetroRob

The ball was hard hit, but coming off the bat I thought that ball was going to the warning track, which is what it did. The sun made it a challenge. Another over-call by Kay. Still not as bad as Sterling. I can see what’s happening on TV and ignore Kay’s call. I’m at Sterling’s mercy with radio.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    Gosh darn.

  • Hummingbird S.

    that was unfortunate..

  • Greg

Jeter’s at bat saved that inning

  • SevenAces

    Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

    JOSH HAMILTON!!!
    Y U no make ERROR?!

  • Sdjohn

    Geezus Kay calm down.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

To Kay’s defense (Sterling cannot read a fly ball for his life), that thing just seemed to die, I thought he crushed it.

  • Zanath

Michael Kay with the John Sterling call.

  • Greg

Not watching. Was it a full rob

  • Greg

    Where was that 1-0 pitch?

  • TomH

Like to see CC get that fast ball faster.

  • Pat D

    Where was that 2-2 pitch?

  • jjyank

At least we’re getting Holland’s pitch count up. Though we are playing the team that subscribes to the Nolan Ryan School of “I didn’t need no stinkin’ pitch counts, so neither do you”.

  • SevenAces

Yeah, Teixeira gloves that one 99.99999% of the time.

  • Needed Pitching

Nunez should be playing short ;)

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

    Dammed nunez er jeter

  • RetroRob

The curse of Nunie. Even when he’s not in the field, his presence impacts the other fielders.

  • Hummingbird S.

    Derek Nunes

  • Pat D

Nice, Derek. Nunez could have done that.

Though I will say I’m getting sick of Teix constantly swiping at those one-hop throws.

  • BillR

    Damn it Nunez!!!

  • Chen Meng Wang

Jeets doing his best impression of The Experience.

  • Randi B

    I’m a bit confused… how is that an E-6… Why isn’t it an E-3???

    • Pat D

      One-hop throw.

      • Chen Meng Wang

Tex still makes that play 99% of the time though.

        • Pat D

I think it’s less than that anymore. I know of a few times already this year when he didn’t glove the ball and tried to catch it by swiping up.

          • Chen Meng Wang

Pujols is the one guy who I’d take over Tex at first, A-Gon is a close third but personality wise he’s kind a douche.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Kotchman’s great on defense, but he can’t hit.

              • Chen Meng Wang

I was thinking overall package, but you’re right. Kotchman can straight pick it at 1st with anybody.

        • Needed Pitching

a big part of the reason why Jeter’s error totals have been so low the last few years

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Can’t assume the 1B should scoop that.

    • RetroRob

Ball in the dirt. E on the throw. Tex normally picks it, but still a bad throw.

  • SevenAces

    I forgot all about Goomba(Beltre).

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

    Sabathia sqeezed by ump.

  • Chen Meng Wang

CC through 2IP with just 25 pitches. Nice.

  • flamingo

CC looks good. The strikezone doesn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/nomchompsky Nom Chompsky

    Jesus.

Nunez really did make an error from DH, didn’t he.

  • jjyank

Now let’s expand the lead on these flapjacks!

…figured I might as well get on that bandwagon.

    • Chen Meng Wang

what is this flapjack thing, I saw it in another thread but didn’t get it. Then again I was half reading, half watching something, and half talking to some one.

      • Havok9120

We’ve decided its a new name we’re going to call people.

What? You wanna know WHY? You wouldn’t understand.

        • Chen Meng Wang

I absolutely want to know why, whether I understand or not isn’t important. My curiosity is enough where I must know.

          • Havok9120

Well, someone (I thought it was jjyank but maybe not) called someone else flapjack as a random end to a sentence. Robinson Tilapia and I have decided to make it a thing because it amuses us.

            • jjyank

Na, wasn’t me. I’m totally jumping on the bandwagon though.

      • Pat D

Wait a minute! That’s three halves!

        • Chen Meng Wang

Well…Man Bear-Pig is half man, half bear, half pig.

          • jjyank

            Super serial.

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

The ranger love on espn is worse than the old redsox love.

    • SevenAces

      Rangers: the new Red Sox?

    • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

Ranger have swung and missed twice now against two national leaguenteams they were favored to beat. They are becoming the buffalo bills of baseball. F them

      • Pat D

It’s all because of Nolan Ryan, one of the most overrated baseball players of all time.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          Never won a Cy Young!

          • Pat D

People were just in awe of the strikeouts and no-hitters.

He only had 5 seasons of 5+ WAR.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He deserve a ton of credit for his longevity and durability, but he almost lost 300 games. Given how important 300 wins are, how does that get ignored?

              • Pat D

It’s weird, because yea he only had a .526 winning percentage. And at the same time, it couldn’t be all his fault, right?

I mean, 1987 he had a league-leading ERA and went 8-16. Was that because the Astros offense sucked that much or because of the Astrodome?

  • Will

Argh. I hate first half Cano. It’s like having Ramiro Pena batting 3rd.

  • Countryclub

I’m not sure who Phil Rogers works for, but he just tweeted that Cashman told him in the spring that he offered up Cano twice before he got promoted. I assume most of us know about offering him for Arod in the TX deal. But I hadn’t heard about offering him to KC for Beltran. They even played him at 3rd so the KC scouts could see him there. They took Buck and Teahen instead.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I thought they offered him for Randy Johnson too.

      • Countryclub

I guess when you don’t have many legit prospects you’ll offer up a good one until someone bites. Luckily for the Yanks, nobody did.

        • RetroRob

I’m not sure Cano was so much offered, but he was one of a collection of players Texas and Arizona could have asked for, yet neither did. Wang, too, could have been had by the DiamondBacks. Just confirmation on how difficult it is to project players who aren’t clear superstars.

          • Countryclub

Maybe, but the yanks were willing to let him go.

  • flamingo

Nice at bat by A-Rod, too. Holland’s at 53 pitches.

  • SevenAces

Good AB, burn a bunch of pitches and get the walk/hit.

  • Chen Meng Wang

    Damn, well that’s a rally killer…

  • jjyank

I thought RHB Tex was supposed to be the good one?

  • Hummingbird S.

crappy ABs by Teix so far… but in general the Yankees are looking good

  • Will

That was the most predictable DP ever. Thanks Tex.

  • Chen Meng Wang

CC looks really good tonight. I’d love some more runs, but as of right now I don’t think he needs them.

    • Havok9120

Too much power for me to feel comfortable with 1 run.

    • I’m sexy and I Cano it

As good as CC is, I’d wager on the Rangers scoring at least a few more runs in this game. Insurance please.

  • Hummingbird S.

    slider is nasty tonight

  • BK2ATL

CC Boss-Hogging it tonight!!! Ace time!!!

  • Tom

Sutcliffe just compared Josh Hamilton to Mickey Mantle on the ESPN telecast

I thought he was quickly becoming one of the worst color commentators in baseball… I was wrong – he already is.

    • Chen Meng Wang

Incredibly gifted baseball player with a horrid personal problem. I’m not saying its a perfect comparison, but I’m not saying it’s not there at all.

      • Tom

Except he didn’t even mention personal problems (or injury problems)… he was comparing them from a baseball perspective.

        • Tom

He also went into the “unseflish” narrative and saying it all starts with Michael Young…. until Adams called him out on that bullshit and reminded him of his traded demands last year.

        • Chen Meng Wang

I mean, I’m nowhere near old enough to have watched The Mick play but I’d have to imagine in comparison to their peers Mantle was much better than Hamilton is.

          • Monterowasdinero

            This. What a joke.

  • Havok9120

My God. I’m over at the Rangers blogs just poking around. The Sox fans may be insane, but the Rangers fans are just angry. At everything.

    • Chen Meng Wang

Haha, loosing in the World Series in consecutive years cannot be fun. They are also considered the steroid capital of the late 90s

    • BK2ATL

Probably because for all the hype and talent they’ve had over the years, including our current 1B and 3B, they have exactly 0 WS titles…..

      • Chen Meng Wang

Well, when Alex was there they where just terrible.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And it was all his fault too.

          • Chen Meng Wang

You’re probably being sarcastic to a degree, but that’s what happens when an owner throws the entire payroll at one player and his name isn’t Stienbrenner.

            • RetroRob

Ummm, you don’t think Mike was being serious I hope. I took that as 100% sarcasm. Look at the years he had.

        • BK2ATL

What about when Tex was there?

    • jjyank

      Can I get a link?

      • Havok9120

They’ve already gone through 3 threads. Heres the really pissy 2nd thread. http://www.lonestarball.com/20.....31/g17gdt2

And here’s the one they just opened. http://www.lonestarball.com/20.....96/g17gdt3

        • jjyank

          LOL first line I read:

“fuck this shit… bust out the vodka”

…one run game in the 4th inning. I thought OTM was bad.

          • RetroRob

True, but keep in mind, down in Texas they’re always saying “fuck this shit…but out the vodka.”

            • jjyank

              Heh, fair enough.

          • Needed Pitching

“fuck this shit… bust out the vodka”

            my new life motto…

          • Havok9120

Wait till you see the Jeter hate.

            They REAAAAAAALLLY hate the Cap’n.

        • Havok9120

          I just looked through the 3rd thread….

Very heavy on the .gifs of gorgeous women.

          • jjyank

Wow I like that new thread of theirs…

    • RetroRob

Lot of pressure on being a Rangers fan now. No longer the underdog. They just spend 100+ million on a pitcher. They are regarded to be locks to win their division, and the odds on favorite to go to their third straight World Series. No fan wants to lose three straight World Series.

      • Rookie

Would you rather be a fan of a team that went to two straight World Series and lost or one that got bounced in the second round one year and the first round the next?

And I believe that the compensation being paid to Darvish is the equivalent of less than $20 million per year for all-prime years — well below what CC got for years that will, I would think, be well past his. And they paid less than teams paid Halladay, Lee, Cain, and what people expect someone to pay Hamels. But PR-wise, you’re probably right.

  • http://twitter.com/nomchompsky Nom Chompsky
    • Tony

      That is awesome

    • GardnergoesYardner

Should be changed to Nunez, we really need to find a way out of this inning. Nunez? *watches as Nunez’s throw sails into stands* Nunez!!!

  • SevenAces

    Hah! Suck it YOUNG!

  • Will

Bad at bats so far by everyone but Grandy and Jeets. Everyone is getting pitched a certain sequence of pitches designed to get them out and they’re all falling for it.

    • jjyank

Isn’t what you described how every single at bat in the history of baseball goes?

      • Will

They’re not being patient enough. That’s what meant to say.

        • jjyank

Eh, they got Holland over 70 pitches, that’s not bad.

      • Needed Pitching

        shhhhhhhhh

      • jjyank

Not necessarily the “falling for it” part. But you get the gist.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

A-Rod’s had some pretty awesome at-bats.

      • TomH

Yes, technically speaking. But I’ll bet he would prefer some ol time ARod type at-bats

      • Will

Y you no let me have anything Mike? Haha.

    • RetroRob

A-Rod and his two walks say Hi.

  • Professor Longnose

So glad Ibanez isn’t out there.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    C’mon six pitches Stewart!

    • Chen Meng Wang

Haha, any AB by Stewart more than 5 is considered a success…btw hooray!! lead off walk!!

    • BK2ATL

And now a run scored. I’ll take it. LOL!!!

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

    • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

      Thats eli’s house anyway.

  • jjyank

Haha how do you walk Chris Stewart?

  • Havok9120

Man, those balls their hitting to left look sooooooo good off the bat. Its scaring the crap outta me.

Annd. They just walked CHRIS FREAKING STUART.

  • Cy Pettitte

Stewart walks and sees a ton a pitches, that’s awesome

    • Cy Pettitte

      ton of*

    • Tom

On a 3-2 curveball no less.

Why he is throwing Stewart anything but fastballs is beyond me.

      • Chen Meng Wang

Pitchers like to try to be the smartest people on the field, instead of just going with their stuff they try to fool you.

  • Monterowasdinero

Stewart table setter. And now the bunt from our hall of famer.

  • RetroRob

Stewart really screwed up there, but he got lucky.

  • Chen Meng Wang

What in gods name just happened? I’m totally happy with the results but what the shit?

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

    Stewie ?????

  • Cy Pettitte

    don’t try that anymore Stewart

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Chris Stewart just makes things happen.

He’s also lucky Andrus dropped the ball.

  • Will

What do the Rangers plan to do with all their outfielders? They’ve got Hamilton, Cruz, Murphy, Gentry and lots of prospects knocking on the door like Julio Borbon and Leonys Martin.

  • jjyank

Jeez, they should have had him. Lucky break.

  • Monterowasdinero

Chris Stewart: you can only hope to contain him.

  • Professor Longnose

If Stewart had taken off when the throw got loose he probably would have made it, but he hesitated and didn’t know what to do.

    • RetroRob

That’s what made it crazy. He should have hesitated because he’s dead-ass slow. He needs to see if the ball is going far away. Then when he saw it was only a few feet away, he made an actual decision to try for second.

Yet he sits in the dugout scoring a run. All good. Just don’t do that again.

    • Needed Pitching

      he did leave right away
he just got hip checked by Napoli as he started to run

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Note to self: add Chris Stewart to fantasy team.

  • Cy Pettitte

    retro Jeter is best Jeter.

    • Chen Meng Wang

Circa ’99 and ’01 are my favorite.

  • RetroRob

I don’t even think Brett Gardner would have taken off for second with the ball only five feet from first.

  • Ari Gold

Jeter with another hit. What in the blue hell is going on right now.

    • jjyank

YES. No offense, but I think getting Montero’s name out of your handle would help your anguish.

    • Chen Meng Wang

How do you change your handle. The Website won’t let me.

      • Monterowasdinero

You tell Mike that you want to change a handle that he doesn’t like and voila! It’s done.

        • Chen Meng Wang

So I just have to come up with a better handle and email Mike and ask to change it? Or should I ask him on here.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I’m not changing anything. If you want to change your handle, do it yourself. Just change it going forward.

          • Needed Pitching

you can’t change it in the name box at the bottom of the page??

      • RetroRob

Really? Why won’t it let you change?

    • Robinson Tilapia

We can go with that. Sure.

  • Ari Gold

This is Yankees baseball right here. Everyone starting to see the ball better. Work those counts. Very happy with what I’m seeing right now.

Papa Johns is losing alot of money this year.. .LOL

    • Chen Meng Wang

Seriously. This is the worst advert they’ve ever run. It should’ve been 7 or 8 runs. I mean a team that scores an average of 5+ runs a game, 6 runs is just silly. I got a small meat lovers and small apple pie for ten bucks.

      • forensic

        I’m confused. Enlighten me please.

  • NoH

  • Chen Meng Wang

Mike, I know it’s still early in the season, but you still don’t think Alex will hit 30 this year?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I can’t bring myself to say yes.

      • Chen Meng Wang

I really hope you’ll never be more wrong than when you first said that. I mean, I respect your opinion and all but I was just floored when you said it.

        • RetroRob

You were floored when he said A-Rod wouldn’t hit 30 HRs this year? That’s not a stretch. Granted, last year was the first year he didn’t do it, but the two prior years he was just at 30 exactly and he is getting older. And, oh yeah, hitting is going down.

I think A-Rod will have another 30+ HR season, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he never gets there again. Age is age.

          • Chen Meng Wang

Yeah, if Alex is healthy I fully expect him to hit 30+ Homers this year.

i know it’s just the first game, but Mike, the yanks doing exactly what you wanted so far. think they need a few more runs to really bludgeon them.

I want them humiliated. I want the Rangers to lose so bad that Josh Hamilton relapses.

      Too soon?

      • Cy Pettitte

don’t make Josh Hamilton angry/humiliated he might kill another fan.

      • Robinson Tilapia

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      • Greg

What losing two straight WS to inferior teams doesn’t do it?

        • Will

I think that’s enough. Especially if they never win a WS it’ll be that much more tragic. Talk about heartbreaking though.

        • Preston

Not for a team that’s just happy to get there.

        • Robinson Tilapia

          They got there, didn’t they?

This is Texas. I want CC to electrocute someone’s ass tonight.

Not an ace CC Sabathia is sure pitching like an ace.

    • Tom Zig

I hate when people say CC isn’t an ace. Is it just b/c he plays for the Yanks?

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Because he’s inconsistent and other aces are not. Or something.

        • http://twitter/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

          It’s because he’s fat.
          Or something.

          • CP

            He looks real skinny tonight.

      • RetroRob

I thought he was referring to Yankee fans saying that. Most others recognize him as an ace, although a notch below a Halladay type. I wouldn’t disagree with that, but he is certainly an ace.

    • BK2ATL

Anyone who doubts that CC is an ace really needs to step away from the computer. For all he’s done in the AL East since he’s signed, before that Milwaukee and Cleveland??? I swear, some fans….

I kinda felt bad for Kinsler on that last pitch. Just wicked.

If he hits .350 and keeps showing even half of the power he has thus far, he’s an easy pick for the MVP

  • Erica

    JETER WTF <3

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

The media is running through the narrative that Sabathia got mad in his last start, so now he’s pitching better… except last week he said Rothschild told him to get on top of the sinker more. Indeed, his sinker was performing more like a four-seamer according to pitchf/x, likewise the spin matched a four-seamer.

Now unless getting angry makes him throw the sinker at the correct angle, this has to be one of the stupidest narratives thus far.

  • handtius

Isn’t Aaron Boone in the booth?

  • Chen Meng Wang

Seriously, how is any lefty pitching anything remotely drivable to Jeter right now.

  • jjyank

I know this is the Rangers here, but I’m surprised Holland is in there. He’s been getting hit real hard (even a bunch of outs were line drives), over 100 pitches, gave up 7 runs…

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

They just had to deal with a doubleheader, and have Scott Feldman pitching on Wednesday which gives them one less longman. They need to conserve the bullpen.

      • jjyank

Fair enough. I seem to recall Mike saying in the series preview write-up that despite that, their bullpen wasn’t in terrible shape. Feliz pitched a complete game in one of the double header games.

        • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

Oh thats true, forgot about that.

    • Tom

It’s amazing how often the Nolan Ryan “don’t baby pitchers” narrative gets repeated without folks looking at the actual stats.

The Ranger starters were 4th from the bottom in the AL in terms of total batters faced last year and were middle of the pack (6th) in terms of total pitches thrown by starters. And that doesn’t factor in all the extra games against SEA, OAK and LAA offenses

      • Tom

  • Plank

As per Fangraphs, Rangers current win expectancy is 4.3%. Still far too high.

What was the deal there (on the YES broadcast, I think) about Hamilton making it public that he owes the Rangers nothing w/r/t his contract talks? I mean he has every right to take advantage of free agency, but he of all players has no cause to be a dick about it.

        • Rookie

Market share. Lowest common denominator. Bozo-like voice. It’s certainly not based on intellect, insight, awareness, or judgement. Tim McCarver being inducted into the Broadcaster Hall of Fame eliminated any doubt about that.

    CC sucks. Cut him.

  • Pat D

Hmm. Suddenly not so fuzzy feeling.

  • Greg

There goes the quality start from CC

    • jjyank

      Possibly the dumbest statistic ever.

      • Chen Meng Wang

It really is the worst. I mean it’s ok for judging if a pitcher/staff is being terrible, saying that a staff has the least quality starts in baseball, you know their going to be bad. However a pitcher could go out and pitch 30 “Quality Starts” a season and have only pitched 180innings to a 4.5 ERA. That’s not a quality starter in my opinion.

        • jjyank

My biggest gripe is that according to the Quality Start statistic is it says 6 IP, 3 ER (4.5 ERA) is better than 9 IP, 4 ER (4.00 ERA). In what world is that okay?

          • Chen Meng Wang

I agree, It’s a halfway decent baseline to look at a a pitcher, but anybody who puts any serious stock in it is crazy.

        • Plank

There are worse stats. Certainly a pitcher can pitch well and not get a QS and vice versa, but if a pitcher has a high number of QS, that tells you something about a pitcher.

Runs scored is a less telling stat (data), in my opinion.

          • jjyank

True. But why is a quality start defined as at least 6 IP and no more than 3 runs? Wouldn’t it make sense to make it a game ERA of 4.5 or less? That way it would include 9 IP 4 ER scenarios and thus be a much more telling stat. I guess that’s why I hate it so much, it would be so easy for it to be useful, but it’s not.

            • Plank

Because it’s a dumb stat and makes no sense. I think what they are going for is measuring both the ability to keep their team in the game and the pitcher’s consistency from game to game.

  • Havok9120

Man, its been awhile since ARod and Tex missed close plays in the same inning.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Against a great offense.

      • Tony

He was dominating this great offense until a few weak groundballs found holes. Nothing CC can do about that. Hopefully this start gets him on a run like he was on during the middle of last year

      • Pat D

        1-6, yes.

        7-9, eh, not so much?

            • Plank

I would rather have the Rangers lineup than the Yankees.

    • BK2ATL

Holding that offense to 4 runs, IS pitching well. I’d actually bring him out to face Hamilton, over Boone Logan. Then pull him for Soriano/Robertson. Then Mariano.

  • BK2ATL

Good job by CC to limit the damage. As much as it sucks to say, the Texas offense is really good. CC’s done a great job in limiting the damage at key moments.

  • Dela G

great start by ZZ. maybe send him out there for the 8th if he wants to

  • I’m sexy and I Cano it

On the bright side, now Mariano can get the save. Stat padding ftw.

  • Chen Meng Wang

CC to face Hamilton to start the 8th or Logan to Robertson?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Sabathia and save Logan just in case. I don’t think there’s a wrong answer though, all are defensible.

      • BK2ATL

Even after the last bomb, I trust CC to face Hamilton than Logan.

      • Chen Meng Wang

I agree, plus Sterling’s making it sound as if the entire inning is Sabathia’s I highly doubt that though.

        • BK2ATL

Sterling had it right!!! And CC made us all look like idiots. 5 pitches, 3 outs. Damn!!!

    • Professor Longnose

I don’t think CC’s coming out. Not that he couldn’t, but I think Girardi figures he’s deep enough into the game with a lead to hit the pen.

      • Professor Longnose

OK, I’m wrong. Hear that, everyone?? I was WRONG! Big time.

  • NoH

It’s going to show as four runs in the box score, but CC really pitched better than that. Oh well, good to see a big performance against a tough lineup from the big man.

    • Professor Longnose

      Agreed.

    • BK2ATL

This is why it’ll be hard for him to win a Cy Young. He faces the AL East offenses much more than AL West or AL Central SP contenders. He “held” a great offense to 4 runs and will leave with his team up 3 runs.

The opposing “ace” allowed 7 runs vs. us, another great offense. But that same ace can pad his stats vs. Seattle and Oakland several times a year. CC might get one shot at them annually.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yankees usually need to have huge years to win any kind of award, like 2007 A-Rod.

        • Greg

1977 Sparky Lyle? I’ve seen more wins out of the pen

        • Pat D

      • http://twitter/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

This was an AL central team.

I agree that in previous years CC has had to face tougher opponents (especially last year, but Verlander had teh winz), but this year the rest of the AL has really stepped up its game while the east seems to have slid back a bit.

      • Total Dominication

        Holland isn’t their #1 starter.

I’m seeing it with my own eyes and I still find it hard to believe. If it’s not unprecedented for someone to do what he’s been doing since July 9th of last year, I have to think it’s close.

Keep proving me wrong, Jete — please.

  • Pat D

    They better not blow this.

    • handtius

      really?

      • Pat D

I was referring to the NY Rangers.

  • Chen Meng Wang

Sterling is joking that he thinks Mo could pitch another ten years. If he keeps himself in shape, I think he actually could be effective for another ten.

    • jjyank

I said this the other day, but if Jamie Moyer can do it, so can Mo damn it!

      • Paul VuvuZuvella

Why not? Got to be easier for a closer than a starter and that cutter will be effective at 86mph.

        • Havok9120

The way it breaks more as its slowed down, it’d be a mean slider by the time it drops that much velocity.

  • handtius

ny ranger win it. last goal was total bullshite.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And the NY Rangers live to see Game Seven.

  • Pat D

I don’t know what these Ottawa fans are chanting, but they can go fuck themselves.

    • Zooboy

I think they are chanting: “Fuck our-selves! Fuck our-selves!”

  • Greg

The goal stood, but the Rangers won anyway 3-2

  • BigDavey88

Man, if the Sawx lose to the twins tonight I will be beyond thrilled.

    • Professor Longnose

I think some Sox fans would break at that point.

  • Dino Velvet

Jetes has been on fire since he broke up with minka.

  • Don’tcha Know?

I think Ortiz is backing around .456 right now. This insanity HAS to stop. How can a former roider make such a grand comeback when he was never all that great prior to that initial injection?

    • Don’tcha Know?

      *batting*

    • Total Dominication

Because he is a very good baseball player, and roods weren’t the reason for that.

      • I’m sexy and I Cano it

        mind. blown.

        • Don’tcha Know?

Yeah. Agreed. My mind is equally blown.

  • Monterowasdinero

Uehara the rare reliever who pitches from a windup with no one on. Soriano too.

    • handtius

      lowe was too.

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

How long before the Sux Fans change the lyrics from “Sweet Caroline” to “Sack Valentine” ??

    • Dino Velvet

      “So bad! So bad!”

      • Paul VuvuZuvella

        Right !

  • forensic

Thank you Michael Kay for ruining my dvr’d rangers game for later… Bum.

  • Karl Krawfid

    lol @ that Honda commercial

  • Tony

Please don’t bring Mo in. My opponent in fantasy baseball has him

    • Robinson Tilapia

This is why I tried Fantasy Football for exactly one season and will never play fantasy sports again.

  • Electric Nunez aka the shocker

Tomorrow we crap all over darvish as we send Pia Mei to the mound.

    • BK2ATL

Yeah, we really need to welcome him to the real MLB grinder, and calm down some of this Texas hype.

  • Professor Longnose

    Swish makes the play!

  • Buddy

Anyone have any idea why Granderson gets dropped in the order when they face a lefty?

Last year he hit lefties better than righties?!?!?

    • handtius

joe g wanted to split up the lefties.

    • http://twitter/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Some old dogma about a six hitter hitting better than a two or some bullshit.
The point is, it doesn’t matter. One of the most comforting things I learned about baseball in the past several years is that batting order has a very, very small effect on winning.

    • alittleblackegg

Look at who is hitting ahead of him in the order. It really doesn’t matter.

  • mike_h

    1 out away

  • handtius

no with the rare fly ball outs.

  • Rookie

Wow. Five runs given up by Lester through 4-2/3 innings using 90 pitches!

Just what Bobby Valentine was hoping for — another night with three or four innings to be pitched by his bullpen…

    • Rookie

I heard that the Red Sox haven’t won since Bobby Valentine said what he did about Youklis.

Do you think the players are effectively going on strike until they bring back Francona?

      • Rookie

Speaking of digging holes, the Phillies’ Kendrick just gave up a four-spot in the first inning against Arizona. Down five to Washington with Lee on the DL and the team not scoring runs, that’s got to hurt.

        • Rookie

I know that they’ve got lots of players on the DL and that they’ve been awesome in the second half for the past couple of years. But could they actually dig themselves into a hole so deep that they don’t qualify for the post season?

If so, it would be a sweet irony given Lee saying his reason for not coming to the Yankees was that they were an old team and that Philadelphia gave him his best chance to win multiple rings.

  • Karl Krawfid

    6 game road winning streak.

    OH YES.

  • David N

It’s only one game, but it feels great to say it:

    Suck it, Texas.

  • SevenAces

Yankees put the Rangers to sleep, now on to the Red Sux failing.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    lightning fast game tonight

  • BK2ATL

    Yanks win!!!!!

Not so fast, Texas. Shots fired!!!!

  • I’m sexy and I Cano it

The Ranger’s parade has officially been shat on.

    • Havok9120

Not if they win the next two. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.

  • Pat D

Awesome win. Tomorrow should be interesting.

  • Ethan

Guess the rangers aren’t going 159-3 this year.

  • Bob Stone

We are all VERY priviged to be able to watch Mariano Rivera pitch. To all you younger fans (and I say that as a guy who is older who has watched the Yankees for 57 years), I say don’t minimize what you are seeing. You will NOT see it again in your lifetime

    • Paul VuvuZuvella

      Well said, sir.

  • http://twitter/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

    Let’s keep this up going into tomorrow. I won’t rest until we’ve given these Ranger’s a good old-fashioned ass-kicking.

  • Karl Krawfid

wow what a play for the twins.

  • Dino Velvet

    Let’s go Twinkies

    clap clap clap-clap-clap

  • Havok9120

    Time to hit up OTM.

  • Bob Stone

    Mike Axisa,

I know I am breaking the rules. In the past I have emailed this kind of message to you, as I probably should do now. But I am a huge fan of RAB and the RABBIS and I am just really upset.

I love the work that you and the RABBIS do. BUT . . . I got really pissed off at you guys tonight over a samll problem that erased a comment that I wanted to make and it got OBLITERATED and DISAPPEARED!. I have had this problem before. I am not a rookie computer user but a network engineer. In the past, I have forgiven this issue, but I am too busy to deal with rewriting my comment. You need to fix this problem.

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Bob Stone

    • Mitt Romney

I can’t imagine how angry you get for things you actually pay for…

  • Bob Stone

Mike – Oops – My comment went through but your site told me it would not – I am sorry to bother you and even more sorry to break the posting rules.

    • Paul VuvuZuvella

Sometimes, particularly from mobile devices, the site says You’re comment was not published, but if you hit refresh, you’ll see it there. Happens to me all the time. Mike must be writing the post game wrap up.

You think Mo is going to retire or keep pitching after this season?

      • Chen Meng Wang

Paul, I’m afraid our other convo about DMT got buried especially cause I had to leave work before I could respond, so I’ll just restate it here: I feel like the “proper supervision” would mean a doctors office and a setting like that would cause me to bug out, and like most hallucinogens I feel that would effect the whole DMT experience.

        • Paul VuvuZuvella

I responded above on your comment. I hear you.

      • Rookie

Yeah. That happens to me all the time, too, from my computer and sometimes leads me to double post.

  • Greg

Cody Ross ties it up with a 2 run homer

    • Foghorn Leghorn

no problem at all…Lester will turn it over to the pen soon..

      • Rookie

Disappointed to see Lester last seven and finish strong — retiring seven straight — completing the last two innings with a total of about 17 pitches. :( But I suppose I should be glad that maybe that’s an indication he’s not injured since I don’t think it’s right to wish harm on anyone — even a Red Sox pitcher. Lester is a cancer survivor, after all.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

        Leadoff triple for Caroll!!

  • Eirias

    Haha. Triple.

    The misery continues in Boston.

  • Greg

And the Boston bullpen is at it again…

  • Foghorn Leghorn

good lord…1st batter faced by the sox pen gets a triple. you cant make this stuff up!

  • Foghorn Leghorn

    Bard coming in….

  • Greg

Damn it Twinkies you dont deserve to win

  • Foghorn Leghorn

    quickly hating cody ross

  • David N

    Freaking Cody Ross….

  • Greg

Cody Ross homers again off Matt Capps and the Red Sox will probably win. DAMN YOU TWINKIES!

  • David N

Bobby V takes out Bard for Aceves. If this backfires….

  • Greg

Parmelee gets on with one out

  • Kevin

Boston wins..yuck. Hate that you wasted a Triple but then again,it was Bard.

  • Greg

Twins deserved to lose. Should have pulled Marquis after Salty got on base and with the heart of their order up and a man on third with nobody out they should have gotten a run in.

  • Greggor

    I can’t believe how douche-a-rific that article was…
