Game 19: Revenge

Joba continues playing catch, will shed walking boot next week

The last two times I made it to the Bronx for a playoff game, the Yankees were eliminated. The first was Game Four against the Indians in 2007, the second was Game Five of last year’s ALDS. Unless you’re celebrating a World Championship, there’s nothing fun about walking out of the Stadium following the last game of the season. The last three or four days have been pretty rough in Yankeeland, both on and off the field, so a win against the Tigers tonight would be greatly appreciated. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
C Russell Martin

RHP Ivan Nova

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Just a heads up, DotF and the game recap will be up a little later than usual. Enjoy the game.

No, we just win out, then sweep through the play offs, then start next season on a 7 game winning streak :)

  • Cy Pettitte

If I remember correctly, on the ESPN baseball today podcast today they said that if Nova wins tonight he ties the Yankee record for consecutive wins.

    • Sarah

They did say that (and then talked about what a useless stat it is). But Keith had some good things to say about Nova.

      • Professor Longnose

Who has the record? It probably wasn’t a useless stat then.

        • Professor Longnose

Ah, Michael Kay just said it was Clemens. It was pretty much a useless stat when he went 22-3.

          • Darren

Nova’s streak means way more than Clemens because Nova has actually been pitching well and keeping the team in games, and even if he lets up some runs, it’s usually when the yanks are ahead. Clemens would give up 3 in the first and 2 in the 5th and the Yankes would claw back to score 6 and win. Screw the Rocket.

            • Professor Longnose

Yeah, Clemens wasn’t nearly as dominating as a 22-3 record would make you think.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

If Ivan pitches well I might have to go get a Jersey. I haven’t bought one since I thought Joba was going to be a mainstay in the rotation for years. Now I have the jersey of a middle reliever =/

    • jjyank

Or maybe our future closer? You never know.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I think Robertson and Soriano have something to say about that.

        • jjyank

Soriano is only here temporarily, and who knows what happens with D-Rob. I love him, but he could get injured, or the control issues could blow up. Just saying, Joba has a shot in the future. Not next year, but who knows who is closing games in 2014 or 2015. Just trying to make you feel like you didn’t waste your money!

      • Kevin Winters

If Joba is smart he’ ll leave when he has the chance.

    • Professor Longnose

How do you plouffenate something? (Or do you plouffenate someone?)

  • Yankeefan Arod Fan

Wow Thats a Pretty Bad Attendance.

  • jjyank

Question for you guys about something I’ve been thinking about with Nova. How much do you all think confidence plays into a pitcher’s ability? It’s a word I’ve constantly heard about Nova, and I’m wondering if that might be the X factor for guys that outperform their scouting reports. Just a thought I’ve been mulling around in the noggin.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I think there is something to having confidence on the mound, you throw more strikes because you believe your stuff is good enough to get the guy. I think most of Nova’s success though is his control has gotten a lot better since he was a prospect, and the fact that he’s added a + slider to his arsenal.

      • jjyank

Yeah, the slider is definitely a major reason for the K rate increase. I’m quickly becoming a huge Nova fan. I was never a Nova doubter, but he’s really looking like a solid middle rotation guy. Hard work is also important, but I’m starting to buy into the intangible confidence business.

  • Professor Longnose

    Love the hook!

  • Cy Pettitte

    great pitch, wow.

  • flamingo

The stadium strikeout sound effect is so nice to hear.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

So for every game against the Tigers for the next 9 years, we’ll have to hear Kay tell the Prince Fielder in Tigers Stadium story.

  • Professor Longnose

All right, forget Verlander, the Yankees have been waiting all month to play a team that can’t catch ground balls.

  • jjyank

Boesch is on my fantasy team. Usually a UTIL guy (I have two UTIL slots in my league) but I’ve been using him in LF since I also have Gardner, who’s obviously on the DL. My LF option is pretty much between Boesch and Logan Morrison. I started Boesch last night but sat him tonight in favor of LoMo in LF and Kelly Johnson and Swisher in my UTIL spots. Only 1 AB, but looks like a good decision so far. Suck it Boesch.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

LoMo should be starting for you on the regular, whether it be in UTIL or LF, in my opinion. Starting Swish tonight is a gutsy move though, just because he’s facing verlander.

      • jjyank

LoMo is usually in the UTIL spot with Swish, so he does start for me. But Kelly Johnson’s been hitting a bunch of homers this year so I didn’t want to bench him. Besides Boesch, my only other bench option right now is Ian Desmond. He was great to start the year, but has cooled of so he’s riding the virtual pine now. My team is pretty pitching heavy.

Anyway, just happy Boesch got out so it confirmed my decision (so far).

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Eek, whenever I hear “back goes Ibanez,” or “in comes Ibanez,” or “cutting over is Ibanez,” I get really nervous.

    • Professor Longnose

I don’t think he actually achieves “cutting over.” It’s more like “moving sideways because he doesn’t know whether to come in or go back.”

    • JMK

      “Stumbling in comes Ibanez…”

  • Tom

Pitching inside with a fastball, what a concept.

Almost like hitters have a tough time with that and if you simply pitch up and away all the time it’s a lot easier on hitters. Maybe Phil Hughes can watch CC or Nova pitch one of these days.

    • jjyank

Yeah, but that’s easier said than done. You miss inside, and you either hit him or leave the ball over the middle of the plate. You gotta have good command to bust guys inside regularly.

      • Tom

Easier said then done, sure…. but you have to at least attempt to do it and not pitch scared of making a mistake.

        • jjyank

I think this plays into the confidence thing I was talking about above. As far as location goes, you gotta be confident you can make that pitch. Hughes is pitching scared because he’s gotten rocked so many times. It’s not an easy problem to fix.

          • Tom

It’s not simply confidence…. even when he was pitching well he rarely came inside.

He got used to blowing people away with a high fastball out of the pen and he stuck with that approach and never has adjusted.

  • bk yank gan

cant stand michael kay and his repetition. actually diggin the mlb.tv broadcast. its jim kaat right? i had no idea he was doing game again. always liked him. i love singleton he was even good when he did that game by himself a couple of years ago. Kay needs to go he is too douchey

    • rawbrain

Singleton>Leiter>O’Neil>coney>Pinella>Flaherty>Kay k now they have different roles but Kay just annoys the hell out of me

      • JMK

Eh, O’Neil is occasionally entertaining but rarely insightful. Flaherty? He re-defines vanilla.

        • rawbrain

yeah flaherty is extremley boring but at least he is not annoying like kay. i just cant take him anymore. see ya

  • Professor Longnose

Can we retire “If you get him you have to get him early” along with all the other silly things announcers say?

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Grandyman! hit it so hard he broke the mlb.tv broadcast.

  • flamingo

    Grandy!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Alex!!! a little bit of life :)

  • jjyank

A-Rod! Love it. Keep it going guys, every run is huge against a guy like Verlander.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Runs off Verlander? Impossible!

  • forensic

Atta boy A-Rod! Just hit it where they ain’t.

Not so much for you Cano…

  • flamingo

    Take some pitches, Robbie.

    • jjyank

Eh, you can’t really take pitches on Verlander. Dude throws strikes. Robbie just got fooled on the changeup.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

    Robbie :(

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

We scored a run off of Verlander :)

  • Plank

    Nice leap Cecil.

    • Plank

Prince, I mean. It is weird seeing Prince Fielder in a Tigers uni.

      • Professor Longnose

Ha–I remember Cecil. He lost his power when he was with the Yankees but had some key hits.

  • rawbrain

alright nova lets hold em down

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

    What happened to Brandon Inge?

    • jjyank

      DFA’d I think.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

No I mean what happened to him, he was a decent player…then out of nowhere fell off a cliff.

        • jjyank

Ah. Well I can’t help you there, I don’t follow the Tigers close enough.

    • forensic

      Released.

  • jjyank

Stupid poll question. Most Valuable Player. Pitchers are players. If they shouldn’t be eligible, then change the name of the award.

    • Plank

I stopped caring about BBWAA awards long ago. I know who I think is the best in any given year, that’s enough for me.

  • flamingo

Susan just said exactly what I was thinking re: Nova – “Here’s your run”. Hmmm. Makes up for that early inanity with the Jackson steal.

  • jjyank

    Ugh I miss Brett.

  • forensic

Gee, I wonder what the next 20 posts are going to be now…

    • flamingo

      For good reason.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

    GOD. DAMNIT. RAUL.

  • Cy Pettitte

Ibanez are you fucking kidding? just keep it in front of you. christ.

  • Professor Longnose

    Oh, for…That’s…AUUUUUGHGHHGH!

  • flamingo

Ibanez should not play in outfield. Ever.

  • Clyde Barrow

Why does Joe insist on playing that hunk of junk in the field.

  • rawbrain

god damn ibanez horrible. i would rather see nunez

  • Need Pitching

    Get well soon, Gardy.

  • rawbrain

miss gardy that would have been an out

  • handtius

ibanez sucks a bag of dicks in the outfield.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

“Ibanez fires all the way…towards home..” Sometimes I love Sterling.

  • jjyank

I know it’s more difficult with Gardner on the DL, but I would rather keep Ibanez at DH and play Jones against the righty. I don’t care if it’s Verlander.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Also worth noting that Jones is a guy who can run into one of Verlander’s 100 mph heaters.

    • Professor Longnose

      Absolutely.

  • Professor Longnose

OK, when a fly ball bounced off Jose Canseco’s head and went over the fence for a home run, that was a worse play than Ibanez just made. But I can’t think of another one.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Still, when you’re being compared to Canseco as a fielder…you know you’re doing something wrong.

  • rawbrain

he sucks in the field and can he really catch up with verlander. nunez at least can catch up to a fastball

  • Plank

Raul Ibanez is a Tiger spy.

    • jjyank

Makes up for Aceves and Melancon up in Boston!

  • rawbrain

ibanez sucks in the field and can he really catch up with verlanders heat. nunez at least can catch up to a fastball

    • handtius

hmmm, worth 2 times? I think not.

      • rawbrain

accident sry. streaming the game so my shitty time warner is laggy. ibanez still needs to only dh though

  • Professor Longnose

    Great work by Nova.

  • Clyde Barrow

No runs would have scored if it weren’t for that clown in left. Play a real defender out there.

    • Plank

      He’s on the DL.

      • jjyank

Jones is there. I’d rather play him and DH Ibanez even against a righty. It’s not ideal, but nothing is gonna be ideal with Brett on the DL.

        • CS Yankee

Perhaps calling up an actual OFer versus having 8-9 relief pitchers?

    • Tom

Girardi needs to stop the 13 man pitching staff garbage.

Ibanez is a 5th OF (meaning emergency/rare day off). You’d think after a bunch of misplays he’d realize this by now.

      • flamingo

Sometimes it feels like Girardi looks at each game individually, saying it doesn’t matter over the course of 162, and then loses sight of the way those individual games add up.

        • Professor Longnose

Yeah. Ibanez in left isn’t going to average out to no problem. It’s going to accumulate into losses.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Nova owes Ibanez a nice steak dinner

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

      uhh…other way around.

  • rawbrain

good job nova…take ibanez out now and give me andruw or nunez

  • handtius

that was a really good job by nova.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Wow, Nova pulls a Houdini. Whenever there’s a runner on third and no out, I concede that the run will eventually score unless someone like Mo or DRob are on the mound. Well done.

    • flamingo

It’s nice to see teams other than the Yankees strand runners at third, too.

  • jjyank

Atta boy Nova. Runner on third with no outs. Way to pick up the (shitty) fielder.

  • Manny

Nova looking more and more like a front end starter after every start. Amazing.

  • CS Yankee

Raul’s play as an outfielder is another form of a hate crime.

  • mt

The “extra offense” from Ibanez against the righty vis a vis Andruw Jonesa cannot make up for his bad defense. This is so obvious. Especially when we are against Verlander where every run counts.

I remember Cashman saying before season that they picked Ibanez over other leftfield candidates this offseason because unlike the others (Damon, Matsui) that Ibanez could play the outfield “without embarassment” if someone was hurt without having to DL somebody – but what I don’ty get is that they did go ahead and DL Gardner. So why couldn’t they bring up Wise after the Texas series?

Seems lazy especially with Nova and Sabathia pitching 2 of the 3 games (not Garcia and Hughes where you might anticipate needing extra bullpen)

    • Need Pitching

it’s not like Wise would be starting instead if he was called up

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

      this.

    • JMK

Re Wise: they couldn’t send him down again after Brett were to come back; he’d hit waivers and there’s a good chance you’d essentially be losing him for negligible playing time. Wise is almost more valuable as a guy just to have in case someone went down with a very long-term injury.

It seems to me, as you noted above, playing Andruw Jones in the field is the wisest move. But hey, I don’t expect Girardi to do such a logical thing.

      • mt

Good point about Wise not clearing waivers.

I guess I am just so frustrated with Ibanez’ defense that at least they should play Jones.

  • JMK

Holy Christ, that curve is evil.

  • Jonathan

I’m watching on Gameday..was that first strike to Swisher as far off the plate as it’s saying?

    • JMK

      Looked OK to me.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I know that we shouldn’t speak badly about passed players, but I’d love to see Babe Ruth face Verlander’s curve.

  • jjyank

Good AB by Chavez, pitches seen-wise at least.

  • gageagainstthemachine

I can’t wait to see the faceplant gif of Ibanez.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Yeah, it’s going to be priceless.

  • Professor Longnose

Can’t believe that non-catch by Ibanez wasn’t an error. That’s just ridiculous.

    • jjyank

Yeah, that sucks for Nova who gets the earned run when just about every other left fielder doesn’t let a run score.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I’m listening to the game, so I haven’t seen it yet, but general rule is if you don’t put glove on it, it’s not an error.

      • Professor Longnose

        Bad rule.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Yeah, it’s a terrible rule. but it is what it is.

      • gageagainstthemachine

I think it got glove, but just barely.

      • jjyank

Yeah but that rule sucks. Ibanez shouldn’t have gone for it at all, he should have let the ball drop and cut it off so it would have been a single, not a triple. Unfortunately errors do not account for mental lapses.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

    AJAX 2-2, Grandy only 1-1. Trade=FAIL.

    • jjyank

Since the trade: A-Jax batting average .271 and Grandy .256. WTF we lost the trade?

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

        Obviously.

        • jjyank

Heh, and then there’s the 17 home runs by A-Jax and the 71 by Grandy.

          • Midland TX

Somebody count the Ks, I don’t have enough fingers and toes.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

…this is getting a little scary.

  • Tom

Cabrera doing his best Adrian Beltre impersonation (asking for the appeal on his own check swing)

  • jjyank

Damn it, how did all three of those find a hole?

    • Tom

That’s baseball…. looked like Nova made good pitches on all 3 of those singles.

The “triple” was on a ball that was fisted. The only thing hit hard was the first Jackson single

….And Girardi needs to stop with this shifting crap! Just play the game straight up unless it is an extreme pull hitter.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Jesus. talk about getting some luck. four straight grounders right passed people?

  • Cy Pettitte

this is just stupid. how many ground balls are gonna get through this infield?

  • Clyde Barrow

These groundballs are finding the holes. Ballgame might be over with Verlander on the mound.

  • Athenian

Are you fucking kidding me? Cheap hits and all we produce is pop up. There goes the fighting chance.

    • jjyank

I know it’s Verlander, but it’s still early.

      • Athenian

I know but it is not like this line up is scaring anyone.

  • Clyde Barrow

Paulie’s a good man. Funny guy and great stories.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Nova’s sick of this shit, if he cant trust his infield to get to balls he’ll just strike everybody out.

    • Athenian

Must think he is playing in the over 50 slow pitch league. Talk about going through the motions.

  • Athenian

Either these ground balls are hit harder than they look or our infield is just ugly slow

    • Tom

Doesn’t help that Girardi feels the need to station someone nearly behind 2nd on nearly every AB these days.

Neither Cabrera or Fielder are extreme pull hitters but Girardi wants to be smart and shift for them anyway.

      • Athenian

I agree but binder rules. Or Joe pines to be half the manager Maddon is…copycat

        • Tom

I really think it’s the latter… Girardi saw it being done to him and said “I can do that too” (the difference of course being the Yankees actually have dead pull hitters which make sense to shift against)

It seemed like he started it the 3rd game against the Rays…. he put an extreme shift on Desmond Jennings (Cano was behind 2nd) and Jennings promptly singled through the 2nd base hole to drive a run in.

      • Need Pitching

or they look at spray charts and try to position their fielders where the hitters normally hit the ball

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Sterling is a terrible play by play guy.

    • jjyank

Indeed. How come you’re riding the radio train? Out of market?

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Nah, I’m at work, and since I’m in market the games blacked out for MLB.tv so I’m listening to it. Probably will be for most of the season.

        • jjyank

8 PM on a Friday, that sucks. I feel ya though I was in the same boat a couple months ago. I decided to quit and paint some room for family friends instead while I finish my degree. It’s nice to actually watch more than 1-2 games a week, last season I was stuck on the radio most of the time too.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Yeah, it’s alright though. I’m out by 10, and that’s really when most things start on friday night anyway.

            • jjyank

Yeah I meant with regards to Yankee games haha. When I was a freshman in undergrad I delivered pizza. Paid really well but I had to work Friday nights till 1 am. I’m very much looking forward to a 9-5 job in a couple of months.

              • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I until very recently delivered Pizza, as much as I enjoyed the money, the stress on my car and all the other shit delivery boys did at the restaurant wasn’t worth it.

                • jjyank

The car part is true. I live in a rural area of New Jersey and easily put 100-120 miles per shift on my car. Like a bad BABIP, that was unsustainable. My coworkers were the shit though. If they had given me a company car, I’d have come back. Alas, I got stuck working in a bank for two years after undergrad while I was commuting for grad school. Painting is where it’s at though. Pays better than all of that, and I’m my own boss. At least until I get my Masters and need a real job haha.

    • Professor Longnose

Next year will be his 25th doing Yankee games. It’s a curse.

      • Plank

After that will be double 13s. Coincidence? Yes. Or is it? Yes.

  • rawbrain

yeah true but at least sterling has the funny home run calls ill take that over see ya and the same stories all the time

  • Plank

To my eyes, Cano looks like a plus defender. Am I alone in that?

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

TEH METRICS SAYZ AWFUL!!!! UZR!!!! kidding, yeah he’s a very good defender.

    • jjyank

Not at all. I feel Cano is very underrated defensively. Some guys at MLBTR a few weeks ago where calling him “mediocre”. That’s ridiculous as far as I’m concerned. Maybe not the best in the league, but most certainly above average, if not closing in on elite.

  • jjyank

Damn, off the end of that bat. That was a good swing by Grandy, just missed it.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Damn…hopefully we can push across a couple more runs against Verlander, cause he hates coming out of games.

  • Athenian

Well the up side is that they played better after their previous three game losing streak. Tomorrow!

  • Plank

The more I think about the 2014 budget cuts, the more it bothers me. Hal Steinbrenner gave an interview where he said he’s a finance geek and thinks it’s the best move. He reminds me of Donald Trump’s kid. The one who cut the tail off an elephant. He’s a spoiled rich kid who takes over his dad’s business and thinks he can run it better.

If he wants to take a year off from being the best in the league, maybe we should take a year off from caring.

    • jjyank

I really like the concept of being “The Rays, but with money”. There’s nothing wrong with not handing out monster contracts that handicap us later.

I do, however, disagree with $189 by 2014 just because it’s too exact. The Yankees need to do what they need to do, even if they don’t get there until 2016, or if they only get to $195. I just hope the desire to get under the luxury tax threshold is not a direct reason for missing out on key players, but it probably will be.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Being “The Rays, with money” is tough tough because as good as our scouts and baseball people are, they honestly don’t hold a candle to Tampa.

        • jjyank

I don’t think it’s the scouts, but the development people. Obviously they are the best in the business in that department.

I didn’t mean that 100% literally, just saying if the Yankees were smart spenders, but still had a big payroll, that’s a good thing. The blank check mentality is a problem, I think.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I absolutely agree “smart spenders, big payroll” is the best way to go about it.

        • Tom

          Time for Ibanez to atone….

      • V

To me, I think part of the ‘austerity budget’ is to tell free agents that the Yankees are done bidding against themselves just because they have more money.

  • Clyde Barrow

Nova has not cost us 3 runs, Girardi has. Ibanez should not be playing in the field, period and enough of these Joe Maddon shifts. The groundball pitcher is getting groundballs and Joe is screwing it up.

    • jjyank

But Ibanez made a mental mistake, not necessarily a physical one. He should have cut that ball off, not gone for it on the fly. That’s not on Girardi. I don’t want Ibanez out there either, but I blame Raul himself more.

Overmatched at the plate. Overmatched in the field. Can someone tell me why that washed up idiot is playing in left field tonight?

    • V

And this ‘idiot’ is why they traded Montero (they opted to sign bargain-basement DH rather than use the DH they already had).

      • jjyank

No…they opted to trade Montero to get Pineda. Raul had NOTHING to do with the reasoning to trade Montero. Are you serious?

He got hit hard this inning, but the early stuff was bad defense, bad shifting and bad luck.

    • jjyank

Yeah, seriously. Ibanez play and four straight ground ball singles are frustrating. Not a bad performance at all, I feel bad for Nova.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Great Defense continues

  • Don’tcha Know?

Is anyone seriously confident that the Yankee offense can carry this dwindling rotation? For nearly all of April I didn’t think twice about the starting pitching, but now, I just don’t think I can sport a brave face any longer . . . And to think, it may eventually become regrettable that they traded away AJ Burnett. WTF.

    • Karl Krawfid

Yankees are not gonna be pitching this bad all year.

Yankees have played Tampa, Boston, Texas, LAA, and now Detroit.

Put Baltimore in that group also. Not easy teams to face in the early going.

      • Don’tcha Know?

Are you sure about that? You know Hughes is NEVER going to turn it around and Garcia suddenly seems ancient this year. On top of that you have Kuroda, whom I hope will be brilliant, but has fallen into a stellar/suck cycle. I like Nova, in fact, he may actually be one of my favorite players, but it seems like he’s allowing a LOT of hits . . . I don’t know . . . Is Pettitte really the answer? What about ManBan? Are they ever going to give one of these “hot shot” youngsters a go-around?

    • Professor Longnose

Nova wasn’t bad. The defense killed him.

    • CS Yankee

The bigger question is can the offense score enough to overcome their fielding.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I think our starting staff is 1. much better than they have shown the first few weeks of the season and 2. way better than you’re giving them credit for. CC’s rounding into shape, this is Nova’s first bad game since like last August, Kuroda was great last time out against probably the best line up in baseball 1-9, and Pettitte is on his way back.

  • Athenian

Alright what the hell is going on, was this team in the club house eating fried chicken and drinking beer?

      It’s not May yet.

    • Athenian

Don’t think Cano is the only one. Jeter seems to be the only one who decided to play the game.

  • Tom

Cowboy Joe needs to stop calling the pitch 4-6″ off the plate a strike to lefties, Verlander is tough enough without all the strikes he’s getting out of the zone.

At least 4 bad ones and another 3-4 marginal ones

        • RkyMtnYank

No, the left fielder was completely in position(and stationary at the time) to make the play. It was just complete ineptitude that he didn’t make the play. Ibanez was on the run and dove to make the play even close. The two plays are completely different.

      • Need Pitching

so posting a 6.75 ERA (if the defense had limited the damage to 4 runs) for the game in 5.1 innings wouldn’t be deserving of a loss?

            • Need Pitching

Knocking out Verlander with 5 runs in 6 innings is really a game you need to win. It’d be really nice to see another comeback these last 3 innings.

  • JohnnyC

Leyland managing like it’s the World Series. Nothing wrong with that I guess considering they’ve lost 6 of last 7.

    • forensic

Bringing in a lefty pitcher to face a lefty hitter is managing like it’s the world series?

      • NoH

Hell, if that’s the case then Joe is managing like it’s the world series just about every game.

      • V

When the lefty is Curtis Granderson? (hint: he’s not dominated by lefties anymore).

        • jjyank

I love Grandy, but he was only not dominated by lefties for one year. Can’t blame the manager for going by a larger sample size.

        • Need Pitching

he has a pretty huge platoon split so far this season (granted SSS)

        • forensic

No, he isn’t, but he is still worse against them than righties. No power against them whatsoever this year. There’s no problem managing to the probabilities. It’s a move all managers would make, so I fail to see how that’s managing like it’s the world series.

  • NoH

What a weak ass throw out. He just flailed his arm.

  • jjyank

When Girardi gets hot like that, you know the umpire sucks. He wasn’t stepping in to protect a player, he was just pissed at West’s suckitude.

  • V

Joe West = biggest bitch in baseball?

  • jjyank

Are you kidding me? Granderson did not go there.

  • Clyde Barrow

Coke and AJax 1 Granderson 0

Tonight, Detroit got the best of that trade.

    • jjyank

But in general, we did. Would you trade Granderson back for A-Jax and Coke? I didn’t think so.

      • Holy Ghost

It took IPK, A-Jax, and Coke to make that trade. Love Grandy but I still think we gave up too much.

  • RkyMtnYank

Wow, Grandy not even close to going around there.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

    absolutely lost the trade.

  • Jason

I don’t usually get too heated over umpires, but come on. Joe West has been a picture of inconsistency tonight and then the 3rd base ump saying Granderson went around…what a joke. Joe West doesn’t seem to care much anymore, might be time to retire.

    • jjyank

I’m sure my grandmother can hook him up with a real nice old people home apartment.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Leaving work, hopefully they make a comeback by the time I get home…

    • jjyank

Run! Run faster than you’ve ever run before!

  • jjyank

Jeez, that was ball 4? Does Joe West hate the Yankees?

  • jjyank

Michael Kay: The umpire at third looks like he’s about 15.

Me: …Maybe because he’s calling check swings like he’s 15.

  • Don’tcha Know?

F**K! Just once I’d like to see the Red Sox down for the count!!! How that offense is clicking is beyond me. ARGH RAWR BLAH BAM BUSH!

  • D

“A rare walk from David Robertson” -MLBN broadcast

    What?

    • mt

I noticed that too – sometimes I think that Vasgersian loves to hear himself talk – like Michael Kay.

  • NoH

I don’t want to come across the wrong way because I love the guy, but it would be really nice if at some point Roberston could throw less than 20 pitches an outing.

    • jjyank

Na, Houdini is part of his charm now!

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Angels are now 6-14. That’s the 3rd worse record in the AL. Just one game better than the pitiful Twins and Royals.

    • Holy Ghost

I still don’t think they’re as bad as their record. They’ll get hot eventually

    • Professor Longnose

Spend all that money and have a chance to be irrelevant this early–that’s tough.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Also the Marlins just got CGSHO’d by JOE SAUNDERS.

  • Clyde Barrow

Why didn’t Alex get that hit last year vs Benoit in the ALDS? Now let’s get him in.

  • CS Yankee

    My take;
    1) Martin complains about Wade not getting calls
    2) Martins get two bad calls due to his complaining (pay back by West for challenging him)
    3) Kid up at third backs up his union grandpa and rings Grandy on the check-swing

Who else sees it this way?

    • Need Pitching

none of that would suprise me

  • jjyank

I’m not complaining, but Boesch was playing insanely deep. Like, so deep that anything behind you is a homer anyway. Why? The guy was practically set up on the warning track.

    • NoH

For once the defenses position goes the yankees way!

  • forensic

Ok, come on guys. Gotta get it done here now!!!

    • forensic

Not bad, got the run in at least.

      Come on Swish!

  • Professor Longnose

    YES! YES! YES-YES-YES!

(A direct transciption of my thoughts.)

  • jjyank

Great baserunning by A-Rod! He had to hold up on the hit and still made it to third! Come on boys, let’s do this!

  • Clyde Barrow

Great piece of hitting by Robbie. Now let’s get 2, get Mo in and get the W. Keeps Nova’s streak alive.

    • Need Pitching

      the streak lives

  • Professor Longnose

    RISPsuccess, guys.

  • Athenian

The balls tonight must be magnetic tonight, afraid of gloves. Never seen so many weak hit balls that find holes.

  • Cy Pettitte

    that’ll do Teix, that’ll do.

  • Professor Longnose

Got the tying run in. OK!

  • jjyank

Hells yeah! Tie game, and good tag up by Robbie!

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

    And Nova’s streak continues.

  • Clyde Barrow

Nova just didn’t deserve to lose this ballgame after what the defense did to him. Kudos to the offense for making amends. Now that we’ve kept Nova’s streak alive let’s get the W.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Nova’s streak lives!

  • Professor Longnose

    Nyeah, nyeah, Benoit.

  • Professor Longnose

    Hey, is it garbage time?

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Yes because the Yankees were out of it as soon as Verlander got the lead.

  • Cy Pettitte

    lol at IBB to Ibanez

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    HAHAHAHA they’re ibb’ing IBANEZ!!

  • jjyank

..They’re IBBing Ibanez? Wow, I really hope this bites them in the ass.

  • Tom

    And another Cowboy joe strike….

  • jjyank

Just saying, that first pitch strike to Chavez, was a ball when D-Rob was pitching.

    • CS Yankee

      Agreed

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

If the Yankees win by a walk off…who delivers the pie?

    • Professor Longnose

I think Swisher bought the franchise from Burnett.

  • Eirias

Ibanez is intentionally walked? I don’t see the sky in flames, but maybe tomorrow morning.

  • spectra

Has everyone seen the schedule in May? We might have a great few weeks

  • forensic

The only guy who hasn’t gotten a pie yet bats second in the 9th. Could he extend the hitting streak and finally get a pie all at once? That’d be nice.

  • jjyank

How many bats has Mo broken in his career? I’d love to see how much money he’s cost the other team on bats.

    • CS Yankee

If I had a favorite bat and was going against Mo, I would pull another out of the bin.

  • jjyank

Man I love watching Rivera pitch!

  • Tom

I guess it took Mariano for the Yankees to start getting the calls 3″ off the 3rd base side of the plate

  • handtius

who called for a walk off?

  • jjyank

Okay, disregard Mariano’s own feelings about retirement. Let’s pretend he wants to pitch as long as he is able. How old do you all think he can get before he loses it?

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

      50ish.

    • Professor Longnose

      3 more years.

    • handtius

      57

    • CS Yankee

      Mo standards…2-3 more
      Paps…3-5
      Farnsworth…5-10
      Moyer…15-20

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

so who gets the first pie of the season?

and how’d we tie it up? my car’s radio is broken, cause I drive a hoopdie.

    • jjyank

LOL at hoopdie. Tex hit a sac fly after hits by A-Rod and Cano.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

        but…i thought Tex was terrible?

        • jjyank

Heh it was a deep fly ball too. And heads up baserunning by A-rod to go first-to-third on Cano’s single to RF.

    • Tom

Single ARod, Single Cano, sac fly Tex

    • Professor Longnose

      Single, single, Tex sac fly.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

ball 3 was also strike 2…i don’t understand the strikezone.

    • jjyank

Don’t try. It’ll make your head explode.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

and now it was strike 1 to jeter…

  • Professor Longnose

A walk from Martin would be good.

  • Cy Pettitte

Angels release Bobby Abreu holy crap

    • Professor Longnose

      Really?? Wow.

      • Cy Pettitte

yup, Olney tweeted it and MLBTR posted it

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

I mean, I’d at least take a look at him if I’m Cash.

      • jjyank

Wow. No harm in evaluating, for sure.

      • Cy Pettitte

I wonder if he’d even be willing to come here after he was complaining about lack of ABs in LA.

        • jjyank

True. It would never happen with Ibanez still here, and I don’t think he’s been bad enough for him to get dumped for Abreu.

      • Need Pitching

looks a lot like Ibanez, except with more walks and less power

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Then I’d window shop, and then just keep walking.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Who is this guy pitching for Detroit, he’s straight gassing it.

    • Professor Longnose

      Yeah, but wild.

    • Tom

      A regular Nuke LaLoosh….
Doesn’t know where it is going.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Alex, just hit the ball in the air buddy :)

  • jjyank

Wow, great outcome there! Sac fly wins it!

  • Clyde Barrow

Now we just need a sac fly, Alex. Hit another 400 footer to center.

  • handtius

    this is getting interesting…

  • forensic

    Come on A-Rod!!!!!

  • Need Pitching

so who gets pie for that?/?

  • jjyank

Not how I expected it, but HELLZ YEAHHHH

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    WILD PITCH!!! YANKEES WIN!!

  • forensic

Sweet!!! Does Jeter get a pie for that? How the hell do you decide it now?

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Haha, love the walk off wild pitch, and Alex/Swish’s reaction :D

  • Cy Pettitte

    walk off WP lmao

  • Professor Longnose

    A slide off! Woo-hooooo!

  • Clyde Barrow

WHAT A WIN!!!! WALK OFF WILD PITCH!!!!!!!

  • handtius

    oddest walk off ever.

  • Tom

So do the Yankees pie Villareal?

    • jjyank

Haha I thought the same thing.

  • Professor Longnose

    Pie?

  • Need Pitching

Joe West looked pissed off he had to call safe

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

Glad I’m not the only one who saw that.

    • mt

I think he was hoping he could somehow call Jeter out – play was closer than I thought (assuming Villareal had actually held on to the ball.)

  • Professor Longnose

    Night, folks. Great win.

  • handtius

slide-off pie? I think jete vetoed it.

  • forensic

    BBBOOOOOOOOO!!! No pie?

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

“You face good teams, sometimes they’re going to beat you.”-Derek Jeter, he understands baseball.

  • Need Pitching

so that was a great game 3 of a 4 game losing streak

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

I think that was like the Castillo dropped ball. No pie.

  • Clyde Barrow

Now don’t let up like we did in Texas after we took the 1st one. Take the series! We’ve got another chance tomorrow if our bum can do better than theirs and we have our ace on the mound at home on Sunday so there are no excuses.

    • jjyank

There are always excuses: it’s called YCBP. I’m plenty optimistic, but if we predicted baseball so well, did we expect to hit Verlander so hard? I hope we win, and I think we will, but you can’t say “there are no excuses”.

    • mt

On the other hand, as for tomorrow, Detroit can take their anger about their five game losing streak out on Garcia.

Also I saw Smyly pitch against Texas on Sunday – he looked pretty good actually. Let’s hope that does not continue.

What I really want to see is that we hit Scherzer on Sunday – too many games in past where we whiffed against him (like 2011 ALDS)

  • oldmanalex

a-rod: hall of fame, traffic controller.

    • jjyank

      I’ll call Delta, get him a side-job.

  • UNCC Josh

Awesome game. Let’s have a huge home stand.

  • jferna19

Nice comeback win. Reminds me of the ’09 Yanks. Love it.

  • mt

Verlander still has not won a game in Yankee Stadium ; hard to believe. I really think the short porch gets to him – I remember a game against CC in 2009 or 2010 that Verlander pitched and someone (either Arod or Swisher) hit one of those right field cheapies and he was PISSED! Shaking his head in disbelief on the mound and very dismissive of the dimensions in his after-game comments (how could an easy fly ball could beome a HR?)

Also Nova’s win streak continues – he has been giving up up a lot of hits but on good side his K/9 is up and walks are low – tonight his defense did not help (Ibanez floundering, Robby Cano drop on tag).

  • jferna19

This may be a completely ridiculous statement, but is there even a chance Joba could become a starter in the near future?

    • forensic

No, and you’re right, it is a completely ridiculous statement at this point.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com The Plouffenator (Formerly Chen Meng Wang)

        sadly this.

    • Midland TX

Hold onto your beautiful dream, you crazy dreamer! At least until the All-Star break.

  • mt

    Bobby Abreu was released tonight.

    • Midland TX

Looking at his stats, he must have hit a wall–oh wait, that’s ridiculous. That would never happen.

  • Jimmy McNulty

Quality win, shitty start from Nova, finals fucking suck.

If any of you idiots are contemplating going to lawschool, smack yourself in the balls with a hammer instead…trust me it’s about the same.

    FML.

    Good night.

    • Ethan

I’m considering going to law school! :p what did you do your undergrad in and where?

      • Jimmy McNulty

Mathematics, and Iowa State. Law School fucking sucks ass…it’s way too much fucking work for no where near enough money. It’s either work so much that you hate your life or reasonable hours but no where near enough money to pay off the enormous debt that you’ve encumbered. To top it off you deal with more assholes than a proctologist. The tests rape you so hard that your gynecologist will need therapy after giving you an exam. It’s terrible. Downright. Fucking. Awful.

        DO NOT GO!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you enjoy the smell of your own sweat and can deal with huge fuckfaces with outsized egos telling you what to do all the time and want to work 80 hours a week.

  • pistol pete

Abreu released from LA today. He’d be an upgrade over Ibanez even though I admit Ibanez hasn’t been as bad as I thought he’d be coming off an awful spring. Abreu is a better fielder, better hitter, far better base runner, and fits Yankee tough at bats with solid lifetime obp. Plus it blocks him from going to Boston. What would he cost?

    • Midland TX

I will grant you Ibanez’s ugly plays tonight and on Opening Day. Beyond that, how can you complain about what Ibanez has done so far? For starters he has fewer Ks than Abreu in twice as many PAs. He’s 2 for 2 in SBs (no attempts for Abreu because you have to get on base first).

Speaking as a Yankee fan I would love to see Abreu patrolling RF in Fenway all season long. Or, even more amusing, LF.

    • Bunt Gardner

If he’s claimed off waivers, it will be the remainder of his $9M contract. If he’s not claimed and becomes a free agent, he’ll be free to sign with any club for the minimum salary and the Angels paying the rest of his tab.
