Update: Yanks recall Mitchell, send Garcia to ‘pen

Update (12:09pm): As expected, Eppley has been sent down to Triple-A to make room on the roster for Mitchell.

11:42am: Freddy Garcia has been bumped from the rotation and will pitch out of the bullpen for the first time in his career. Joe Girardi hinted at both Mitchell and David Phelps being candidates to fill the rotation void, probably depending on who is needed out of the bullpen the next few days.

10:48am:The Yankees have recalled D.J. Mitchell from Triple-A, the team announced. There’s no word on the corresponding roster move, but I suspect Cody Eppley will be sent down after throwing three innings and 37 pitches yesterday. No 40-man roster move is required.

Mitchell, 24, was scheduled to start for Triple-A Empire State today, so he’s fresh and available for a whole lot of innings. He had been the best starter on the club’s top minor league affiliate in the early going, pitching to a 3.13 ERA with 8.22 K/9 (24.1 K%), 2.74 BB/9 (8.1 BB%), and a 48% ground ball rate in 21 IP across four starts. I ranked him as the Yankees’ 16th best prospect before the season.

you could only hope the next move is the release of Freddy but that won’t happen

    • Kosmo

My guess is Garcia is either gets his scheduled start vs. KC on thursday or NY releases him on Wednesday. We should get a pool started.

      • TJ

Just my impression but he looked so dejected yesterday that I would not be surprised to hear him retire. I’m wondering if he could increase his velocity by moving to the pen. That would really be the only option for him now.

I say give the ball to Mitchell and let the kid have a shot. The Yanks have babied their talent in the past for too long. Bring ’em up and lets see what they have.

        • STONE COLD Austin Romine

          Joba was rushed.
          Phil was babied
Ian Kennedy didn’t get enough innings or another extended look.

This narrative of the Yankees babying their prospects needs to seriously fucking die.

          • Kosmo

Have you read Paul Lebowitz´s article “Six Cold hard Questions for the Yankees“ ?
certainly echoes my feeling on the subject.

            • Bunt Gardner

I don’t know why you point to this article. It’s an antidotal based article that neither proves or disproves anything with data or other hard evidence. It’s the sports version of a political op-ed piece. All it does is validate your opinion if you already share the writer’s viewpoint.

          • Midland TX

Agreed. Anyone who remembers the abortion that was the 2008 rotation should not be screaming to throw a bunch of MLB debutantes out there 2 out of every 5 days.

    • Bunt Gardner

Actually, I hope Garcia can figure out his issue(s) and become a quality contributor for the rest of the season.

      • BigDavey88

If none of the kids can put it together in the bigs, we may have to go back to Garcia again. If he’s not there, what do we do? Give Sydney Ponson a call?

  • Monterowasnotdinero

I like Mitchell but have realistic expectations of:

    1) better than Freddy
    2) 5 decent innings/twice through a lineup
    3) the advantage of many hitters not having faced him whereas everyone knows what Freddy throws and how his ball moves.

DJ is Edwar- skinny which is a concern stamina -wise at this next level. I like Phelps more at this point but like this move.

    • Kosmo

Mitchell has pitched 140,150 and 160 innings in each of the last 3 years. All NY needs is 5-6 innings of 3 run ball from DJ or Phelps.

    Andrew Marchand
Girardi says Mitchell is leading candidate to join rotation. Nothing official yet.

    • Kosmo

is Mitchell “the“ or “a“ leading candidate ? The SP role would be between Phelps or Mitchell is a no brainer at this point.

    • infernoscurse

      i find that dumb

    • Need Pitching

Marchand corrected himself and changed it to Phelps as the leading candidate

  • ArchStanton

Gotta love the numbers game that baseball can be- Eppley does a pretty good job and gets demoted for his troubles :)

  • Ben

They haven;t made a move yet, Lohud reports that Joe said they are waiting for Cashman to arrive at the park. if it’s a simple move like Eppley, I don’t see the need for Cashman to be there. Perhaps Freddy’s time is up?.

    • Rookie

If Garcia’s not going on the DL and they’re waiting for Cashman to arrive at the park to send Eppley down, maybe they’re just waiting for Cashman to pat Eppley on the back, tell him it was just a matter of numbers and their desperate need for a fresh arm, and tell him “Job well done.” and “If you keep pitching like you have, you’ll be back up here soon.”

    • Havok9120

Well, he does have to sign all the paperwork and make it official.

  • RBP

    DL for Freddy??

    • Rookie

You have to think it’s either DL or moved to the bullpen as the nominal long man to see if rest helps him any. It’s hard for me to imagine the Yankees trading him with his negative value or releasing him unless they feel it’s very likely, for some reason, that he’s toast.

All things considered, I think DL would be best for him and us.

      • Rookie

As Ben said, sending Eppley down is the obvious move if it’s not the DL yet.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Mitchell was called up to be used in the same exact role that Phelps is being used for. They just realize that with a full 7 day slate this week that Phelps can’t back up both Garcia AND Hughes this week.

God forbid one of the other 3 throw out a massive clinker and need the quick hook, they’d really be stuck.

My guess: Garcia gets one more start. When the next off day rolls around in 10 days they find a way to shift rotation to skip him and hope Pettitte is ready.

If not, they’ll give it to Phelps for what they’ll try to convince us is only a “spot start.”

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

      Clunker, that is.

Furthermore, because they owe him 4M, Garcia will be relegated to ultimate garbage man in the pen. Not a “keep it close” guy. But a “we’re down by 25 runs already” guy. THen they quietly release him at AS break.

    • Kosmo

Phelps could back up Hughes on tuesday and Mitchell takes Garcia´s scheduled start on thursday on the road vs. KC.

This would also allow Mitchell maybe 2 innings tonight if he´s needed.

  • TJ

Garcia might be done but unless its for certain I don’t think that Yanks will just release him. They don’t have to do anything desperate. I think either a move to AAA or the DL.

Hughes could also be moved to the pen too. Really there are two rotation spots one for Pettitte and another for a new kid (another repeat of Nova would be nice right now).

Of course Axisa will say Joba should get one….

  • Brendan

Freddy to bullpen, according to Bryan Hoch

  • Sayid J.

Just speculation at this point, but does this make it possible for Pettitte to make the start after Mitchell’s? Next Tuesday or something? Or will Pettitte likely be held out in the minors for another turn.

  • J

So I guess Mitchell is going to be Hughes’ caddy then.

  • jjyank

I approve. Freddy in the bullpen. I’ve preached patience on here for awhile, but my frustration with Freddy and Phil has boiled over. I’m assuming that this means Phelps to the rotation and Mitchell replaces Phelps in the bullpen? Maybe they’ll have Mitchell caddy Hughes in his next start, and if Hughes implodes again, Mitchell or Pettite takes Hughes rotation spot.

  • http://twitter.com/waybj Brandon W

It might not matter who replaces Freddy in the rotation. If Hughes doesn’t show any more command or improvement in his next start he could wind up in the pen too, with both Mitchell and Phelps in the rotation if Pettitte isn’t ready…

It’s amazing how quickly pitching depth disappears, huh?

    • http://twitter.com/_swarlesbarkely Drew

Its the reason why you have the depth to begin with….

    • jjyank

I don’t think they’re gonna put both Hughes and Garcia in the bullpen. Here’s how I think this will play out:

Garcia in the bullpen. Hughes gets another start against Baltimore. Mitchell caddies Hughes in case he implodes. In that time, the Yanks try to use Garcia out of the pen a couple times and see how he does. If he continues to tank, and Hughes also implodes again, Mitchell might take Hughes’ spot, Hughes goes to the pen, and the Yankees release/trade Freddy for a bag of balls. Phelps slots right in to Freddy’s rotation spot.

I won’t argue if you think it plays out differently, obviously many things can happen. But that’s my prediction. I can’t imagine Hughes’ leash is much longer than Freddy’s.

  • NoH

I’m glad this move was made. I’m not sure if I would have been able to stand another start from Freddy.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Freddy got fingered.

    (Middle fingered)

    • jjyank

I laughed. But Freddy did this to himself.

  • Dino Velvet

I don’t know what contribute Freddie can make outta the pen with his noodle arm.

  • Ro

With Swisher likely missing a few days, perhaps a week and the call up of Mitchell, I cannot see how at this point they don’t release Freddy tomorrow or Tuesday. They need that extra person on the bench for the outfield and I don’t see them turning around and sending Mitchell back down. That’s just stupid. Unless they are giving Phil one last shot this week too. All in all, big week for the Yankee’s pitchers and fucking finally, we get these young arms moving from the minors. Just fucking get them up here already. I’m opening the betting line now. Both Mitchell and Phelps do really fucking well. They know what’s at stake, so do it already and make my freaking belly feel good.
