Tonight’s starters — Phil Hughes and Jered Weaver — have a bit of a connection dating back to 2004. Weaver was the consensus top pitching prospect in the country prior to the draft that year, fresh off winning the Dick Howser Trophy (Collegiate Player of the Year) and Roger Clemens Award (Collegiate Pitcher of the Year) at Long Beach State. Hughes was considered the top high school pitcher in California that spring, a top 15 talent for the draft.
Weaver was advised by Scott Boras, who let teams know he was seeking Mark Prior money ($10.5M). The Angels had been connected to Hughes all spring long, but when Boras’ asking price cause Weaver to fall out of the top three picks and into Anaheim’s lap with the 12th overall pick, they pounced. That left Hughes on the board for the Yankees, who took him 23rd overall with the Astros’ first round pick. They received that when Andy Pettitte signed with him hometown team.
Eight years later, the 25-year-old Hughes and 29-year-old Weaver will square off tonight in their native Southern California. Weaver is a legitimate Cy Young candidate and clearly the better pitcher, but I’m pretty sure he’s jealous of Phil’s World Series ring. Here’s the lineup…

Jered is basically what Phil hopes to become. A flyball pitcher who doesn’t give up homers. Weaver didn’t really turn the switch until he turned 26. Phil is 26. See where I’m going?
Well 26 in a little less than a month but you get the point.
Weaver pitches in a fairly extreme pitcher park though.
Career Home ERA, FIP: 2.58, 3.94
Career Road ERA,FIP: 3.92, 4.23
You can see the massive FIP – ERA delta at home which is mainly a product of a 6% HR/FB rate (its ~9% on the road, which is pretty close to normal)
I think Weaver would be a 3.75-4.00 ERA guy in a neutral park. In Yankee stadium he’d probably be 4-4.25

Hughes is 4 and 5 with a 4.94 era and a whip of1.37, let’s tell the whole story. He’s been a very large disappointment considering what they could have traded him for and what they thought he’d be. He’s a borderline No 5 pitcher who I feel would be a better than average middle reliever. He’s had plenty of time and chances to prove he can start. Maybe for someone else but we’re the Yankees and the Yankees require better.
He has been better the last few starts but the bar is set so low fans break their neck to defend him. You had ppl on Lohud saying well if you take the collusion play away and A-rod catches the ball at third blah blah blah.

Career 98 ERA+ in almost 500 innings.. he’s nothing special. Four good starts against mediocre teams wont change that fact.
He’s average. I’m not saying he’s great at all. I’m saying we should take a deep breath and realize while he’s not and will probably never be anywhere near an ace, it’s not like he’s Jeff Weaver.

It’s because it’s Phil Hughes. I don’t care to look up statistics, but it honestly seems like the guy can NEVER beat good teams. It’s a matter of having a liability every time the team travels to the likes of Arlington, Detroit, Tampa, Boston, Toronto, etc. I’m still of the ilk that would rather have him in the pen. He’s too scary and unpredictable to watch in the early-going of a game.

Hughes is absolutely useless. He can’t strike anyone out, doesn’t get ground balls, and gives up way too many flyballs that are usually extra base hits. Worst of all he costs the Yanks millions. The Yankees front office is getting me tired with their supposed “faith” in him. He’s a failed prospect, accept it, deal with it, and move on. He’s got no business being a starter on this team.
