Game 48: Connected

Memorial Day Open Thread
Cervelli homers in AAA win

Tonight’s starters — Phil Hughes and Jered Weaver — have a bit of a connection dating back to 2004. Weaver was the consensus top pitching prospect in the country prior to the draft that year, fresh off winning the Dick Howser Trophy (Collegiate Player of the Year) and Roger Clemens Award (Collegiate Pitcher of the Year) at Long Beach State. Hughes was considered the top high school pitcher in California that spring, a top 15 talent for the draft.

Weaver was advised by Scott Boras, who let teams know he was seeking Mark Prior money ($10.5M). The Angels had been connected to Hughes all spring long, but when Boras’ asking price cause Weaver to fall out of the top three picks and into Anaheim’s lap with the 12th overall pick, they pounced. That left Hughes on the board for the Yankees, who took him 23rd overall with the Astros’ first round pick. They received that when Andy Pettitte signed with him hometown team.

Eight years later, the 25-year-old Hughes and 29-year-old Weaver will square off tonight in their native Southern California. Weaver is a legitimate Cy Young candidate and clearly the better pitcher, but I’m pretty sure he’s jealous of Phil’s World Series ring. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
DH Eric Chavez
Russell Martin

RHP Phil Hughes

Tonight’s game starts a little after 9pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Alright, Phil. Show Jeff’s little brother you ain’t sneered.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Dammit. Skerred.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Double post/reply fail. I just plain suck. Self-imposed ban until the 2nd inning.

  • DERP

I’m sure that San Diego was pleased with their selection of Matt Bush!

    • MannyGeee

Ha. The that GM an Oden Award

  • Ari Gold

Jered is basically what Phil hopes to become. A flyball pitcher who doesn’t give up homers. Weaver didn’t really turn the switch until he turned 26. Phil is 26. See where I’m going?

    • Ari Gold

Well 26 in a little less than a month but you get the point.

    • Tom

Weaver pitches in a fairly extreme pitcher park though.
Career Home ERA, FIP: 2.58, 3.94
      Career Road ERA,FIP: 3.92, 4.23

You can see the massive FIP – ERA delta at home which is mainly a product of a 6% HR/FB rate (its ~9% on the road, which is pretty close to normal)

I think Weaver would be a 3.75-4.00 ERA guy in a neutral park. In Yankee stadium he’d probably be 4-4.25

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Regression’s a bitch isn’t it, Orioles?

    • Ari Gold

      Watch yo mouth.

Don’t talk about regression like that.

  • Morneau After Pill

I’m sure the only thing that Jered is jealous of is that his hair didn’t curl when it got long like Hughes’s did.

  • Mike Nitabach

    What up, peeps??

  • MannyGeee

Wow, who knew less than 15 months later we would have already lost the Martin/Saltalamaccia sweepstakes… Oh well, at least Aceves is making them miss Papelbon.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

      Salty plays like a Latino.

Wow that 2004 mlb draft was pretty freakin loaded…

  • Mike Nitabach

    YEAH! JEET!

  • MannyGeee

    There goes the no hitter

  • Mike Nitabach

    BACK TO BACK!!!!!!! WOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

Grandy going oppo is cool, keep that up so they stop shifting

  • Kramerica Industries

Since I missed the Memorial Day thread, I’ll add my piece now:

    Thank you.

  • Mike Nitabach

    YEAHHHH!!!! HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Fundamentally sound Angels.

  • Professor Longnose

    A run! Life is good…

  • Gone Phishin’

It’s not Anaheim unless Scott Boras is standing directly behind home plate and making sure the camera picks him up

  • Mike Nitabach

    DP ball.

  • MannyGeee

    Wow… got a gift there..

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Angels Baseball!

  • Kevin G.

Mike, I am APPALLED that you didn’t tell us to go check out HalosHeaven when you did your series preview.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Heh, there are no good Angels blogs.

  • jjyank

    Wow great baserunning by Granderson.

  • Mike Nitabach

Now Weaver’s leg is fucked up???

  • Professor Longnose

I don’t like to root for injuries, but if they have to take Weaver out of the game as a precautionary measure, I wouldn’t complain.

  • MannyGeee

Oh shit. With the way this game has been going, a cramped hammy might be the best case scenario for weaver

  • Cy Pettitte

errr wow that was odd. see ya Jered.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Yikes, Jered.

That’s brutal. Hope he’s fine going forward.

  • DERP

    They should put Haren in.

  • Professor Longnose

Now weaver has a no-hitter and a no-outer in the same season.

    • MannyGeee

      Too soon? Anyone?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That sucks, hope Weaver’s not hurt bad. Just bad enough to not pitch tonight.

  • Mike Nitabach

    Oh, man. That is harsh.

  • Karl Krawfid

Weaver just let out a loud FUCK and is out of the game.

I heard it on my TV.

  • MannyGeee

Wow, that kinda sucks. Hope he’s OK enough to shove it up the Red Sox’ asses in a few weeks.

  • Erica

Good start for the… Yankees at least. Damn, Weaver.

  • Charles

Never wanna see someone get hurt, but I’m not crying that Weaver is out of the game :)

  • jjyank

Not rooting for injuries, but the Yankees are in a great position right now.

    • Professor Longnose

Yes, especally if the Angels wind up emptying the pen to get the innings they need.

      • jjyank

Right. First game of the series, and the bullpen has to pitch a 9 inning game. Hopefully the Yanks take advantage.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Sorry, I can’t wait until the second inning now. Damn, that sucks for Jered. Feel bad for him.

    • Professor Longnose

Ah, we didn’t we want you to leave anyway.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        Aw, shucks. Haha

    • Havok9120

Its okay. The comments section is better with you than without you.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Feel sorry for Weaver, but if it had to happen at least it happened against the Yankees.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Goes without saying that the Yankees have to completely wreck the bullpen now and screw them up for the rest of the series.

  • Tom Q

Very tough break, something you don’t wish on anybody. Though obviously as a fan I’ll take it.

Would it be greedy in context to say I didn’t think that last pitch should have been called a strike?

    • MannyGeee

      Bad karma dude…

  • Kramerica Industries

I count at least three “not rooting for injures, but…”.

I mean, I know what you guys are saying. Doesn’t really change the fact, though.

    • Professor Longnose

Do you count the “I’m so sorry”s at a funeral?

  • jon

ok i missed the first 5 mins what happened?

    • Havok9120

2 singles, ARod hit one that should’ve been a DP but an error let everyone stay safe and Jeter score. Then Weaver messed up his leg or back throwing to Cano.

  • Eirias

    (a) So very glad I sat Weaver tonight.
    (b) So very pissed he’s injured.

Ah well, annihilate the corps de secours.

  • DERP

He saw how the game was going and decided to fake an injury. Can’t blame him. I wouldn’t want to face the Yankee offense either.

jk I hope he is okay

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Another team just joined the Roy Oswalt sweepstakes.

  • MannyGeee

Wow,nth at FAAAAAACK from Weaver was kinda cool!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

fifteen minutes late and it looks like I missed quite a lot. What happened so far?

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Weaver got hurt and Aybar turned a DP ball into an error and a run.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

        Ok cool

        Weaver hurt bad?
Who was the potential DP candidate?
Is the botched DP the reason Granderson’s on third?

        • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

          Looked like a twisted ankle
          A-Rod
          Yep

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

2 singles, misplay by Aybar, runner scores, Weaver leaves game with injury, Yankees win 28th world championship.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

If anybody asks I was here for that last bit.

    • MannyGeee

Single, single, DP ball bobbled by , Weaver came up lame on his follow through (knee/ankle?)

  • Kevin G.

If this weren’t the Angels, maybe I’d feel bad. (Unless he’s seriously hurt, then I’ll feel some pity.)

  • jjyank

Also not terribly upset that my opponent in fantasy this week has Weaver…win-win.

Seriously though, I hope he’s okay. If it was going to happen, I’m glad it happened in this game, but I hope he can make his next start.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

I kinda wonder why they don’t bring in a starter. they have Thursday as an off day so it wouldn’t really mess up their rotation that much.

  • Mike Nitabach

How the fuck did he hurt himself?

  • Ivan

yankees gotta put up a couple runs here

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Haha. I know this guy pitching. He’s from my town.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Jeff ? Jered, Ken.

    • Mike Nitabach

He’s called him Jeff at least five times already.

    • Cy Pettitte

I guess the does not equal sign doesn’t work on RAB comments. but Ken keep calling Jered Jeff, lol.

  • Mike Nitabach

This dude has an awesome beard.

    • Scheister

Tis Glorious, as a bearded man myself I can appreciate it.

  • Scheister

Doom! The dude with a 6.75 ERA in AAA pitches a gem, 6 innings of 4 hit, two run ball. He over matches all hitters except Martin, who hits a solo shot. Or so my crystal ball says, it never lies.

    • MannyGeee

      Apparantly Cano agrees

  • DERP

I alway though Weaver was kind of a douche, so I don’t feel that bad. If this was Haren, I would be crying my eyes out. That dude is awesome.

    • jjyank

Plus, my fantasy this week opponent has Weaver, and I have Haren. So I am also cool with that.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

I have a rule to never start pitchers against the Yankees.

        • jjyank

So do I usually, but Haren is one of my best pitchers. Tough decision.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Meh. Jeff was a douche, I’ll grant you that. Jered is alright.

      • DERP

So one brother is a douche and one is cool? Kind of like a less extreme version of Dmitri and Delmon Young?

  • Erica

Michael Kay! The ol’ first-to-third happened and you didn’t tell us!

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He’s probably not even watching the game, at a BBq somewhere. Just stopped what he was doing mid action and said, to nobody in particular, “the old Jeff Nelson.”

      • Erica

Nobody even questions him when he does that anymore.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Actually Kay retweeted me Saturday. He’s in Boston shooting Grown Ups 2. He’s playing a football coach. Hilarity.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

          they’re making a grown ups 2? why?

          • DERP

The first one made $271,430,189 on a $70 million–$80 million budget.

          • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

No idea. That’s basically what I asked. He said to “pay your $12 to find out.”

            • Erica

              That’s very salty of Kay.

  • Mike Nitabach

    Get some more runs!!

  • MannyGeee

Bases loaded 1 out? Oh RISPFail, how I’ve missed you

  • Mike Nitabach

    WOO!!!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Good tag by Granderson there.

  • Cy Pettitte

wow this inning is a comedy of errors

  • DERP

    Good defense IM0!

  • Erica

    What is this inning!!!!!!

    • jjyank

      Regression?

      • Erica

        AAA

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Lol

  • Karl Krawfid

    I love this.

  • jjyank

Wow this is little league territory here.

  • Mike Nitabach

    OMFG! Another error!

  • CBean

    Oh LOLZdefense

  • Hummingbird S.

    love me some Angels D!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Yay fundamentals.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Mike Sciosca must be proud.

  • MannyGeee

    Ohhhhh thank you Angels.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

The Angels play such fundamentally sound baseball.

    http://www.ordinaryresponse.co.....llface.png

    • jjyank

      I love that face.

  • Professor Longnose

Pujols could have caught that if he was willing to let Ibanez rip his arm off.

    • Havok9120

He already got paid, what’s he got to lose?

  • MannyGeee

    This is all awesomeness

    • Tom

The best part is that this is usually the type of inning the Angels have (except the singles would be infield single)

  • pistol pete

Two singles, a double play ball, a strikeout, a short foul flyout and a comebacker and we’re up 3 zip with 2 still on, Yanks are living right.

    • Professor Longnose

That’s not fair. It was a MEDIUM foul flyout.

  • MannyGeee

Think this is enough to give Phil his comfort lead?

    • Kevin Winters

      lol hell no

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Russell is coming through here.

  • Mike Nitabach

C’mon, Martin!!!!!! GS and you deserve a 50 million dollar contractr!!!

    • Professor Longnose

$50 million for a grand slam? How much is a bloop single?

  • MannyGeee

    Wow Russell, just wow

  • Mike Nitabach

    League minimum.

  • Gone Phishin’

I wonder if it’s tough to see at the plate….

    • Havok9120

Singleton thinks so based on Jeter’s reaction.

      • Gone Phishin’

Was just being alittle sarcastic because he must have mentioned it 4 times in the top half

        • Havok9120

Ohhhhh. Sorry. Broken sarcasm meter. :P

  • Scheister

I still think when a pitcher makes an error, the run should count as earned, I know the Aybar error skus this instance but my point still stands.

    • Havok9120

Agreed. Though how bad was that throw? I lost the ball. It may have been one Pujols should’ve had.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

I was half expecting Borjous to drop the ball.

  • mike_h

nice lead, could have been more

  • MannyGeee

As a sidebar, the celtics are threatening to make it a game in Miami…. If ray Allen can hit a free throw.

  • DERP

Fuck this. If Mike Trout didn’t have such a pretty face, I would tell him to go fuck himself.

  • MannyGeee

    Wow. Trout can fly

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

By the way, Trout is nasty. Straight up gamer.

  • Erica

    Grandy catch!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

wow Grandy covered some serious ground.

    • vicki

grandy tells defensive metrics to suck it.

  • chris

    wow – grandy!!

  • CBean

    Grandy!!!

  • Hummingbird S.

    beautiful Grandy!

  • Mike Nitabach

    WHat a catch!!!!!

  • MannyGeee

Ok I just spent 2 weeks in a hotel, did not at any moment worry about the well being of my hand. Someone explain to me what Lucroy did. I must be doing it wrong

  • jjyank

Nice, I thought that was gonna be in the gap for sure off the bat.

  • DERP

    nice play

  • Kramerica Industries

Granderson’s flashed some serious range the past couple days…

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Granderson: the man.

  • Widget

    I heart Grandy a lot.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Fuck…Mike Trout is fast….and Raul Ibanez isn’t so much.

    • jjyank

Well yeah, but Mike Trout doesn’t have an army of Deatheaters at his disposal.

      • vicki

i get your reference but he looks more like jiminy cricket.

  • CBean

I liked it better when Pujols had forgotten how to hit.

  • Widget

However i dislike Hughes. He is totally giving all those runs back.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

This is going to be a great series. I feel it in my bones.

  • Hummingbird S.

awful play by Alex… he has to make that play..

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m pretty sure I’d be jumping up in down in excitement if Alex made that play.

      • MannyGeee

I woulda straight peepeed myself if he makes that play.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Damn A-Rod get that ball.

  • MannyGeee

wow, Pujols straight laced that one

  • Karl Krawfid

Hughes needs to put these guys away.

  • cjc

Boy would it be nice if he could just learn to be efficient

  • Mike Nitabach

    hmm

  • Hummingbird S.

no swing and miss stuff for Phil tonight.. same old shit with all the foul balls

  • MannyGeee

Be nice if Hughes could get out of this with minimal damage

  • Kramerica Industries

At least Phil Hughes looks like, well, Phil Hughes right now.

    Give ‘em all back!

  • chris

saw that curve all the way

  • jjyank

Wasn’t a bad pitch…but Hughes has got to shut this down now.

  • Karl Krawfid

Shit like this is why I won’t go to Anaheim to watch the Yankees play man. Never fails.

  • pistol pete

Phil struggling, only out a bomb to center from a Punch and Judy hitter. Joe’s going to have to empty the bullpen. Get ready Freddie Phil looks like he’s got nothing.

  • cjc

Battle of the bullpens brewing i can feel it in my bones. He just sucks against the angels

    • MannyGeee

Phelps >>> their cracker jack bullpen

  • Erica

    Uuuuuummmmmm

  • CBean

    No good Phil

  • Cy Pettitte

    great inning Phil

  • Kramerica Industries

Mix in a little bad luck and we’re all set.

  • Hummingbird S.

look at that, a team that takes advantage of a garbage pitcher and get hits with RISP

    • Havok9120

Yeah, because that was a terrible pitch.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

the yankees are on a four game winning streak, and this garbage pitcher you speak of had a 3.45 ERA this month coming into this start. Fucking relax.

      • jjyank

5 game winning streak. Makes your point a bit stronger :P

      • pistol pete

Hughes is 4 and 5 with a 4.94 era and a whip of1.37, let’s tell the whole story. He’s been a very large disappointment considering what they could have traded him for and what they thought he’d be. He’s a borderline No 5 pitcher who I feel would be a better than average middle reliever. He’s had plenty of time and chances to prove he can start. Maybe for someone else but we’re the Yankees and the Yankees require better.

        • Kevin Winters

He has been better the last few starts but the bar is set so low fans break their neck to defend him. You had ppl on Lohud saying well if you take the collusion play away and A-rod catches the ball at third blah blah blah.

  • jjyank

    Damn it Phil…

  • Havok9120

    Camo NY is pretty cool.

    C’mon Phil.

  • chris

    crikey

  • cjc

    Fuck lucky its not 5

  • Karl Krawfid

Keep throwing fastballs up and away you idiot.

  • Arya

And Phil is pissing away the lead. Maybe Hughes should fake an injury so Joe can take him out.

  • Matty Ice

    Hughes is fucking terrible.

  • MannyGeee

    Phrusterating.

  • Erica

    What is this

  • Kevin G.

    Phuck

  • Kramerica Industries

    Way to go Phil.

  • Total Dominication

    Well this sucks.

  • cjc

    Come on

  • Athenian

Old Phil is back. Fire up the pen. He is not fooling anyone.

  • Mike Nitabach

    WTF!!??

  • Hummingbird S.

and some lunatics were saying Phil was our number 2 pitcher..

  • AnthonyD

Yankee staff forgot to put the screen out in front of Phil

  • Andrew

    Paging Freddie!

  • Need Pitching

    Phuck Phil

    Phelps please

  • CBean

This is going to be a long game

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Welcome to the OK Corral

  • MannyGeee

Bright side, still only at 25 pitches

  • Arya

He pissed it all away and it only took him 1/3 of an inning. Where is Phelps?

  • The Troll

    Wow. Phil is phucking horrible.

  • pistol pete

For all you guys that complain about Nova how do you like Philly tonite. They’ve waited for this guy forever, their bonus baby, and at best he’s going to be a middle reliever. Freddy to starter 5, Phil to the 6th or 7th. This guy murders the bullpen just does not know how to limit damage.

  • Hummingbird S.

fastballs up in the zone, sounds like a great plan Phil!

  • Frank

Hughes- you can’t get by by just throwing a straight FB with no movement and no effective secondary pitches.

  • jon

    angles RISP 3 for 3

    yankees RISP 0 for 4

    • Hummingbird S.

      as usual, they cant hit

  • Widget

Hughes is worthless. I hate watching him pitch.

  • Karl Krawfid

    GET PHELPS UP

  • Will The Thrill

Phil Hughes has to be the most unclutch pitcher ever. He’s back to no strikeouts Phil Hughes. Disgusting. No need for this scrub anymore I’d rather have DJ Mitchell or Phelps starting.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Wow, I thought I could at least leave for 10 minutes without the lead disappearing. What happened?

  • cjc

    Garbage

  • chris

    crazy ass 1st

  • Mike Nitabach

    Man, this is brutal.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

Hughes really is nothing special. We may see garcia tonight.

  • Celerino Sanchez

Typical Yankees in Anaheim – always find a way to make the Angels look great. Up 3-0, bases loaded. Martin makes out. Hughes goes out and starts throwing that flat, straight fastball and next thing you know you’re chasing 1 run with Hughes at 30 pitches in the first. Feels like a Freddy Garcia kind of night!

  • Frank

    Hughes won’t make it through 4. He’s lucky it’s only 4-3.

  • TomH

Well, Singleton was thrilled by the last 4 starts, but 3 of them were against turkey teams (2 KC / 1 SEA).

  • jjyank

Well, hope the Yankees continue the hot hitting. This is looking like a slugfest.

    • The Troll

Hot hitting as evidenced by the first inning?

      • jjyank

No, by the last week genius *looks at handle* Nevermind.

        • The Troll

Ooo. You’re witty and creative! That same line has cracked me up all 5 other times you’ve posted it. HILARIOUS!

          • jjyank

Stupid comments (like ignoring that the Yankee bats have actually been better of late) while wielding a handle that reminds one of stupid comments…well, that doesn’t inspire much faith.

              • jjyank

LOL see that IS a troll comment, because none of that is true. You’re only aiding my view.

                • The Troll

Do I have to bring up previous threads? “Witcher 2″ and the possible legalization of weed in NJ that YOU were rooting for.

                  • jjyank

I haven’t smoked since I was in undergrad two years ago. And I enjoy video games, so what?

I root for the legalization fo weed because it’s just stupid not to for many reasons, whether you smoke it or not.

You’re being a troll, and now are making personal assertions with zero basis in reality. Just stop.

                    • The Troll

Sounds all true to me. Once a stoner, always a stoner. Hey, it’s 4:20 somewhere. Have a ball, Mr. I Always Have to Have the Last Word.

Additionally, I think its really fucking sad that you keep me playing The Witcher 2 in your back pocket as a point of argument. Really?

You again? Seriously nothing better to do than go back 25 minutes into a confrontation that had nothing at all to do with you? And I’m the troll, right?

                  • Havok9120

Actually….yeah. Especially ince I commented on a 2 minute old comment and all.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow, I’d hate to pitch in NY, go look at his Baseball-Reference or FanGraphs page. Phil’s had a very good month, one bad inning and all the trolls are hunting for him. I’m surprised you guys aren’t storming cross country with your pitchforks and torches.

    • Hummingbird S.

Career 98 ERA+ in almost 500 innings.. he’s nothing special. Four good starts against mediocre teams wont change that fact.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He’s average. I’m not saying he’s great at all. I’m saying we should take a deep breath and realize while he’s not and will probably never be anywhere near an ace, it’s not like he’s Jeff Weaver.

  • Cy Pettitte

    D) playing the AL West

  • Slu

Hughes can’t beat good teams. Fact.

  • The Troll

At what point do you take Phil out? 1 Run? 2 Runs? 100 pitch count? I’m hoping for option 3 but expecting the fourth… 3-4 runs in the next two innings…

  • Monterowasdinero

ARod has to catch Pujols hot shot. New Yankee caps? Special for Memorial Day? The NY emblem is different.

    • Havok9120

Its in camo for Memorial Day.

    • jjyank

I can’t fault a player for not making an exceptional play. Great plays are great because they’re not easy, and that ball was smoked.

      And yes, memorial day caps.

  • Havok9120

    A) That was absolutely brutal and I’m glad I jumped off the Hughes bandwagon last year and never looked back.

    B) Calm the heck down, commenters. Its the second inning. Breathe a bit.

    • Professor Longnose

      Can I borrow some oxygen?

  • Karl Krawfid

Way to go Jeter. Your guy throws almost 30 pitches and you do that shit.

    • Havok9120

Yeah, how dare he take a pitch and then swing the bat after he sees one he likes.

      • jjyank

Pfff yeah, it’s not like the guy is a future hall of famer or something, he has no idea what he’s doin—oh wait…

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

      Wrong!

  • 1stbase

Wow they won 5 in a row, one bad inning by a starter and there the worst team in the history of baseball, i guess that’s how it works now

    • jjyank

Trolls/doom-sayers always show up when things look bad. Unfortunately, that’s a fact of life.

    • The Troll

It’s because it’s Phil Hughes. I don’t care to look up statistics, but it honestly seems like the guy can NEVER beat good teams. It’s a matter of having a liability every time the team travels to the likes of Arlington, Detroit, Tampa, Boston, Toronto, etc. I’m still of the ilk that would rather have him in the pen. He’s too scary and unpredictable to watch in the early-going of a game.

      • jjyank

Don’t most teams have an unstable 5th starter situation?

        • The Troll

          Like Felix Doubrant?

          • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

            Bard.

          • jjyank

What? So one 5th starter performs better than expected, and that somehow validates your point?

Most 5th starters “can’t beat good teams”. If Hughes is a 5th starter, they could do worse.

            • The Troll

I rather have Phelps than Phil. I don’t like Phil as a starter. Simple as that. He’s insufferable against quality teams. At least with DP, I have the slightest inkling that he’ll throw up a few decent innings . . .

              • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

                Phelps is just as terrible.

                • The Troll

I’d still prefer him to Hughes. Hughes has battered my faith for quite some time now. As he has for you too. Quality bullpen arm or a starting question mark? I’d take my chances on Phelps and put the known quantity into the pen where his stuff actually plays up pretty damn well.

                  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

You’d be singing a different tune after about three starts. I like Phelps, I just like him as a starter even less than Hughes.

                    • The Troll

Well Phelps is the lesser of my two evils. All I know is that I don’t want Freddy anywhere near the mound. I’m sure there’s a better option somewhere, though.

            • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Doubront isn’t even their 5th starter. Bard is.

              • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I think Buchholz is, actually. Pretty sure Doubront is their #2 at the moment.

    • TomH

Aren’t they mostly complaints about Hughes?

As for the 5 in a row, well, yes, you’ve got a point, but they were 5 against weak teams. Now they’re playing grown-up’s, and it’s natural for fans to raise the ante accordingly.

      • Havok9120

Except that when we DO beat Detroit and Texas and Boston and the Angles everyone just says that those teams must be slumping. If we win tonight and lose tomorrow, credit for the win will go on Weaver getting hurt because we can’t beat good pitching.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

You’re finally getting the narrative Havok. We can only beat good teams when they’re slumping…and when we loose it’s because we’re terrible

    0-0 Game

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Grandy…don’t you know we’re a terrible team and there’s no way we come back to win this game? Why even bother trying. RAB commenters have spoken, this game is over.

  • mike_h

    tied up atleast

  • Mr. Pink

Hughes is absolutely useless. He can’t strike anyone out, doesn’t get ground balls, and gives up way too many flyballs that are usually extra base hits. Worst of all he costs the Yanks millions. The Yankees front office is getting me tired with their supposed “faith” in him. He’s a failed prospect, accept it, deal with it, and move on. He’s got no business being a starter on this team.

    • jon

Hughes k/9 is higher than CCs

but dont let facts get in the way of your arguments

      • jjyank

To be fair though, Hughes has seen far more batters per inning than CC has.

  • Widget

Yankees won’t score another run this game. In fact, I bet they don’t get a runner to 2nd the rest of the game. A typical crap burger against the always overrated Angels.

    • jjyank

Why do you bother to watch the game then? Must be a miserable experience for you.

      • The Troll

Then let him be miserable. He is, in no way, affecting you.

        • jjyank

Then neither is my disapproval of his attitude affecting you, yet you commented as well. That’s a circular logic.

      • Havok9120

Not if he’s right. Then he can feel justified in his faith that the team is terrible.

And if he turns out wrong, he can dismiss it as a fluke and still claim that he’s right.

        Its foolproof.

    • Kramerica Industries

      What’a widget?

      • Havok9120

Its like a dookickey only not as good.

Is there anything harder to watch than a pitcher who has absolutely nothing

  • Frank

Here we go. Second time through the order. Pujols is drooling in the dugout. This could get ugly quick.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Phelps.

  • Mr. Pink

Watching Phil Hughes pitch makes me forget that a pitcher can actually miss a bat when they throw a baseball.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

Maybe hughes needs stewie behind the plate.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Where was Jeter?

  • jon

jesus jeter has no range what so ever

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I love Derek Jeter. He’s probably my second favorite player of all time behind Paul Oniel. But Christ he has zero range.

    • eephus_pitch

I agree with everything you just said. It still amazes me when I see what looks like a sure groundout to short, then the camera pans over and Jeter’s standing flatfooted, 15 feet from the ball.

  • Karl Krawfid

With 2 outs why not play jeter back?

  • Cy Pettitte

Phil’s gonna use every inch of this park

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

    Thought that was gone

  • Hummingbird S.

he’s toast, lucky they didnt score more..

  • Mr. Pink

I can’t wait until Texas trades us Elvis Andrus when Jurickson Profar is ready so that we can have a shortstop that actually has some range.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Ha, if I was the Rangers I’d do my best to keep Profar down in the minors and keep Andrus on the cheap for as long as possible.

  • Frank

Morales just missed that. Another straight, very hitable FB.

  • cjc

Boy that was lucky should have put that beachball 1000 rows back

  • Tom

How many O-2 fastballs have been hit hard tonight? With noone on base I get going at hitters and trying to put them away quickly, but with men on or a quality hitter up, you just can’t lay in fastballs on 0-2 counts.

Has he thrown a single fastball inside?

  • pistol pete

Phelps or Freddy tonite what does anyone think?

    • Havok9120

I’d always rather see Phelps than Freddy if those are my options.

  • eephus_pitch

I want to see some swings and misses from the Angels. Phil hasn’t had the putaway stuff tonight.
And let’s see the Yanks beat up this Angels ‘pen.
Also, I hate Howie Kendrick. He’s basically a nobody against everyone else, but he hits like Ted Williams against the Yanks.
Also also, I’m stuck with the Angels announcers. They’re so bad I’d rather listen to Sterling.

    • Professor Longnose

I hope that part about the announcers is hyperbole.

      • eephus_pitch

It’s not hyperbole. They really are that bad. They’re second only to the White Sox team in terms of sheer awfulness.

    • Mr. Pink

Phil Hughes not being able to strike people out is old news buddy. The guy is crossing the line from struggling young pitcher to failed prospect.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

        • Kevin Winters

Isn’t he facing more batters than CC though?

  • Professor Longnose

This would be a good inning to drive Cassevah out of the game.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I love how people are arguing against Phil’s solid month by saying he was facing garbage teams. One of those garbage teams according to you same trolls holds the greatest hitter on the planet and Cashman’s greatest mistake ever in Jesus Montero. Two of those teams are supposed threats to the yankees for the division when you same trolls are arguing that the yankees are terrible in Baltimore and Toronto. The only team left is the Royals, who believe it or not have a decent line up with some quality hitter in it.

  • Robinson Tilapia

You can tell I don’t watch anything other than the Yankees. Today marks the first time I realized Mike Trout was white.

Looking through…..325 comments in three innings. Well that can’t be good.

The Yanks, Jered Weaver, and Jesus Christ Almighty are handing Phil Hughes a gift tonight. It’s up to him to keep this team in the game and allow them the chance to win. I’m sure that, if I were to scroll above, this game would be acting as absolute proof to some that Hughes iz teh terrible pitcha.

And Swish and Grandy actually collide this time. What the motherfuck is going on out there? Get your shit together.

    • eephus_pitch

Hughes is getting killed. It’s painful to watch. Let them vent.

3rd time I can remember collisions like this in LA. 2005 ALDS think it was Bubba and Sheffield and it also happened in the early 80’s I think it was Reggie and Bobby Brown, That collision resulted in a walk-off win for the Angels.

    Chris Stewart > Russell Martin

Martin has been close to an automatic out this year. He’s just been dreadful offensively. Luckily his solid D doesn’t render him completely useless…

    • eephus_pitch

False. Martin’s been pretty bad, but still better than Stewart.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Chris Stewart might be the worst catcher in the AL right now. .244 OBP and second in the league in passed balls despite being a part-timer. By all means, give him more playing time!

      • Scheister of Doom

At least his catchers ERA is in the low 3’s or whatever.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That’s because the only guy he catches is CC.

          • Scheister of Doom

            And moving forward, Kuroda?

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I was speaking in more in general, but the Halos currently have the lead and are one of the hottest teams right now!

        • YanksFanInBeantown

          Los Angeles…so hot right now.

  • MannyGeee

This game is like fucking keystoNe capers… Cannot remember a sloppier game by both teams in recent memory

  • Scheister of Doom

16 games only 13 innings. Over under on 2 IP tonight for Takahashi?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I think he might only be in through Ibanez, if that.

    • MannyGeee

Got be over… They have no choice but to get all they can from him

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

No more weak hacks Alex lets go

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

      Fine i guess

    • Scheister of Doom

      he’s a singles machine!

  • Robinson Tilapia

I think Curtis Granderson might actually choke someone tonight.

  • chris

that feels like the zillonith hit in this game

    • The Troll

And yet it’s only the 4th Yankee hit.

  • Buddy

    RISP!

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

In offseason Na-Po-Li say it with me.

    • Need Pitching

      no thanks

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He hasn’t hit at all outside of one week this season.

  • Hummingbird S.

0 for 5 with RISP and 6 LOB.. very nice showing from the offense.

  • eephus_pitch

    ARGH

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It was cool when Cano hit lefties all those years. Shake it off, Robbie.

    • cjc

      I liked the risp hits

  • cjc

They’ve won 5 and still suck balls with risp

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

I miss jorge but at the end porr guy would have no idea what was going on in the game
Too bad we dont have a power hitting prospect in aaa huh.

    • RI$P FTW

He’s one of the only people to hit in the 2011 post-season. Everyone else choked.
He DID quit on the team in the middle of the season, though.
Poor millionaire had to bat in the bottom of the order! How sad! Poor guy!

  • Cy Pettitte

fucking Phil. get this guy out of here.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Seriously, Fuck. You. Mike. Trout.

    • jjyank

I was about the say this exact thing, but I didn’t really want to pay for a second beer.

      • Havok9120

        Isn’t it, like, 4 now?

        • jjyank

Probably. Mr. Riddle is the Bonnie to my Clyde, apparently.

  • Need Pitching

please, please, please get Phil the Phuck out of this game

    • Scheister of Doom

I said this last inning, I’m pretty sure Giradi wanted to ensure his HR per start streak continued. And I repeat, HOOK PLEASE!

  • eephus_pitch

    HUGHES. Still doing it.

  • Kramerica Industries

Trout hitting a home run, given the direction of this thread, seems so appropriate.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

Hey hughes atbleast bean the next guy.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yes..he totally should’ve put a runner on base with Pujols on deck while struggling. That would’ve been a great idea.

  • Mr. Pink

And there’s the obligatory homer Phil Hughes gives up at least once every start…

  • cjc

    There it is

  • Havok9120

    Sigh.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Trout is a manimal

  • Karl Krawfid

    I give up.

  • eephus_pitch

And on top of it all, the Angels announcers are telling me that Mike Trout is the next Mickey Mantle.

    • Scheister of Doom

Speed, power, defense and he’s white, good comp…

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He’s supposed to be good, like really good.

      • eephus_pitch

They pretty much say this about every player on the team.

        • jjyank

But Mike Trout is actually really good.

          • eephus_pitch

I didn’t say he wasn’t, just… it’s pretty freaking premature to label him the next Mantle.

            • jjyank

              Oh, absolutely. No argument there.

            • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It’s also premature to say that Montero is Miguel Cabrera, it was premature to call Phil Hughes the second coming of Roger Clemens. People do this with prospects all the time…it’s best to just take it with a huge grain of salt and move on.

              • eephus_pitch

Ruben Rivera was also supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle.

                • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha like I said, HUGE grain of salt and just move on.

                • Robinson Tilapia

Instead, he probably just stole a picture of Mantle.

                  • jjyank

                    I laughed.

        • YanksFanInBeantown

really good as in, “Is Harper or Trout the No. 1 prospect?” Was an actual question.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I think it still is a question. Neither are anywhere near a finished product, but I’d personally take Harper just because.

            • YanksFanInBeantown

Well, I meant that it was an actual question when they were making the prospect lists at the beginning of the year.

And I’d take Harper too, he’s doing just as well as Trout right now and he’s a year younger. Trout was completely overmatched when he came up last year.

  • Nathan

Seems like the last two guys to pitch at home (CC & Phil) struggle a bit. I wonder if they press too hard at home, in front of their friends/family.

This game started so promising: 3-0 and Weaver out.

  • Athenian

Oh snap. That does not bode well for us.

  • Will The Thrill

Let’s all ride the Phil Hughes roller coaster everyone!

  • cjc

Run him can’t argue balls and strikes

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

By far the best 3rd base coach name in the majors : Dino Ebel.

Every time I hear it it sounds like “see no evil”

  • Havok9120

    Right, things left to do:

Leave Ibanez in against a lefty
Leave Rapada in against a righty
    sac bunt
    Teixera infield popup with RISP
Major injury to one of the key players

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I like good Tex. 1 run game baby!

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Stop “guessing ” Swish

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Swish looks absolutely lost at the plate right now.

    • Hummingbird S.

      his plate discipline is gone..

      • Havok9120

Yeah, he’s not seeing the ball well so he’s hacking to break out.

Everyone does it, more’s the pity.

  • DERP

Teixeira wRC+ up to 117. 124 last year

  • pistol pete

Hughes is going to get Granderson killed tonight. This game is far from over but Joe really needs to get our adding machine off the mound before it gets worse.

  • cjc

Honestly not going to miss Swish much

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

You will when Zoilo Almonte or Chris Dickerson is playing everyday.

      • jjyank

Or when he ends the season with a .350-.390 OBP and 25-30 homers.

    • Havok9120

      Who’s our right fielder then?

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Melky.

        /mywife’d

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I think he’s a free agent…he’s probably going to cost way more than he’s worth though.

          • Robinson Tilapia

Oh, someone is going to get fleeced good on Melky this offseason. May even be the Yankees.

BTW, saying just that is a guaranteed night on the couch in this house.

      • RI$P FTW

        Who’s your 2B?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Got 18 months to figure that out.

          • RI$P FTW

            LOL

        • Robinson Tilapia

          Melky.

          /mywife’dagain

          • jjyank

At least his arm would play better there than Knoblauch.

        • Havok9120

Depends on the contract. I’d take Cano for 6 years but no more. If not him….yikes.

The difference, of course, is that one needs to be decided after this season and one needs to be decided after next season.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

By the way I agree with not pinch hitting for Raul or Chavez this early. This guy isn’t a tough lefty. There’s likely to be a eighty coming in soon and you still got Downs out there. You save Andru for Downs.

    • jjyank

Agreed. It’s the 5th inning, the Yankees don’t need to use that bullet right now.

    • Havok9120

Yeah, I’m not too broken up by it. Still, Andruw has done his best work against righties this season, so I wouldn’t mind having him in the rest of the game.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Downs has pitched in each of the last three games and probably isn’t available tonight.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Mmm, yeah. But you said yourself “probably.”

Same thing happened with what Dusty said about Chapman. But he pitched the 4th day.

  • Scheister of Doom

Hughes gives up only one run this inning! Bet!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Granderson has the Thundercat sword with the eye of Thundera. Everyone else is blind.

  • flamingo

Just read a quick game rundown – what the heck is going on out there?!

    • Havok9120

      ……

Its unfortunate. Let’s leave it at that.

      Go Yankees!

    • RI$P FTW

Hughes is bad. The offense blew it against a guy that could NOT throw a strike to save his life.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Time to go root for another team.

        • RI$P FTW

I’m rooting for the Nationals a little. And the Rays.

          • jjyank

If you’re rooting for the Rays, then you are in no way, shape, or form, a Yankee fan.

          • Robinson Tilapia

No problem with some Nats love. I get the Rays thing. I really do. Just not in the same division as the Yanks.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

stuff and things happened, mostly because of reasons.

    • Robinson Tilapia

One of them games in which, somehow, someone will score more runs, but no one is really going to feel good about it.

    • Havok9120

Just think of the game being played to the tune of Yackety Sax.

      It’ll all make sense then.

  • Scheister of Doom

    OMG………a swing and a miss….WOWZA!

  • eephus_pitch

    Howie Kendrick again.

  • Robinson Tilapia

At least my Heat won. I’m happy no matter what tonight.

    • Manny’s BanWagon

Don’t be too happy. Whoever somes out of the west will smoke the heat and king choker.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Now that’s not very nice.

        • Manny’s BanWagon

I hope you’re a heat fan from the Alonzo Mourning days and not because of their current unholy trio.

          • Robinson Tilapia

Raised in Miami. I was there in ’88 when the names on the marquee were Rory Sparrow and Rony Seikaly.

            • Manny’s BanWagon

              Rory Sparrow, LOL.

when he was a Knick, he’d start to panic if he couldn’t get the ball to Bernard King in the post.

              • Robinson Tilapia

Expansion draft. It happens. Pearl Washington was also on that team.

          • Robinson Tilapia

Alonzo Mourning is also my favorite non-Yankee athlete of all time.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Boo!!!! I hate Labum Queen James because of reasons!!!

I’m I irrationally hating him for choosing to go to Miami to play with other great players, in a beautiful city, with out any state income tax right?

      • Robinson Tilapia

No state income tax. It’s a beautiful city if you’ve got tons of cash. If not, you’re talking traffic almost as bad as Houston or LA.

It’s still Wade’s team to me. I think we like the idea of Lebron on the team more than anything else.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha, that was supposed to Read “Am I….right?” I’m not a huge basketball fan, but I have no problem with the best player in the league putting himself in the best position to make money and win. That would be exactly the same as other teams fans hating Yankees who sign big money contracts as free agents.

          • Robinson Tilapia

The TV special was one of the classic dick moves of all time, I’ll admit.

There’s an irrational hatred of him from entitled Knick fans who think everyone should WANT to play for the Knicks because, after all, they’re a NEW YORK TEAM as well and how dare they when they don’t.

            • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yeah, it was dick. I understand hating him for that after it happened but that was years ago. I also understand Cleveland hating him for not handling it differently. but the rest of the country, Knicks fans included need to grow the fuck up and get over it.

  • DERP

On the positive side, this game has brought back some of the trolls. I was worried about them.

    • Robinson Tilapia

I hope Athenian had a nice Memorial Day weekend.

      • jjyank

And The Troll earned his namesake as well.

    • Havok9120

Had to get the comment numbers in the Game Threads back up.

Meanwhile, my feed is behind. I’d assumed when everyone started saying “at least X happened thats good,” that Kendrick hit a homer.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Me too. I had switched to the Heat at the time.

    • Scheister of Doom

We’re all okay. We read the game thread and chuckle inwardly at all remarks made about us in our absence. Worry not my friend, worry not.

      • Havok9120

I actually don’t have you in that category.

        • jjyank

Neither do I. Congrats! Though tonight’s thread did add a new member for me…

          • Havok9120

Its me, isn’t it? My Fancy Troll Crown gave me away?

            • jjyank

Yes. It was just too fancy, stood out from the troll crowd too much. Maybe you should get fitted for a more subtle crown.

        • Scheister of Doom

My heart is broken, I can’t even troll properly.

          • Havok9120

Nah, don’t confuse yourself with The Troll. I’m sure you could if you put your mind to it.

            • Scheister of Doom

There should really be instructions for it. Lemme ask my buddy, The Troll. I just need a new, Trolly handle…

              • jjyank

                A Troll?
                The Troll 2.0?
                The Real Troll?
                The Real Slim Trolly?
                Troll Monger?

                • Scheister of Doom

                  I like Troll Monger, it’s a winner.

                • Havok9120

                  Real Slim Trolly.

                  That’s money there.

                • Robinson Tilapia

“A troll” is just so simple that it works. You’re not THE troll, you’re just a troll. You’re like a rainbow who hasn’t made that connection yet.

              • Robinson Tilapia

See, I think the best troll handles are just simple names. Be “Bob” or “John” and just say outlandish things without worrying about being taken seriously.

When your name is something like, say “The Yankees Who Like to Bunt,” we know what you’re about before you even type in a single word.

            • Robinson Tilapia

How effective a troll can you actually be, though, if your name is “The Troll?”

              • RI$P FTW

You’re still obsessively posting about it…so pretty fucking effective.

                • jjyank

                  Not really.

                • Havok9120

Does it count as effective when we’re pretty much mocking his attempts at trolling? I would’ve thought that that was the epitome of ineffective trolling.

                • Robinson Tilapia

You have a funny definition of “obsessive.” This is the first I’ve mentioned it.

                • Scheister of Doom

It’s better to be “obsessed” about something with a touch of jest during this particular game, it broke up my bouts of crying.

              • Havok9120

                That certainly doesn’t help.

              • jjyank

Not very. It’s like tipping your hand in poker, the jig is up from the start.

  • DERP

I’m worried that wasting their bullpen won’t matter if Haren throws a complete game tomorrow.

  • pistol pete

Funny how the Yanks went from loaded with catchers to a dead spot in the lineup. What’s up with Martin, this is no longer a small hitting sample and as for receiving it seems the pitchers actually do as well or better pitching to Stewart who’s no Johnny Bench.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

I know we’re not thrilled with Hughes, but I’m enjoying this game. Competetive.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

How dare you enjoy a game that we are not absolutely dominating!!!!!!!! The only fun Yankee games is when we win by at least 7 runs, because remember winning 8-2 to start this 5 game winning streak wasn’t good enough.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        (Looking ashamed)

    • Havok9120

I stopped enjoying it at the Trout homer. Maybe this inning will recapture the magic for me.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

That last A-Rod swing put me where your mindset is.

        • Havok9120

          Yuuuuup. Blargh.

    • Hummingbird S.

Im loving the bad offense, bad defense and bad pitching

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Alex…what were you doing…those first two pitches were right there man :(

    • Havok9120

That second one especially. He must’ve been sitting on a breaking ball.

  • CP

Did Jeter grab Aybars crotch to break up the double play?

    • Robinson Tilapia

The real question is why didn’t they start doing that earlier.

  • Hummingbird S.

what a pathetic swing…they either have to run into one or hope the D makes a mistake, what a great offense!

    • Scheister of Doom

These swings and misses have really made the Yanks look overmatched tonight, anything off speed has been their kyptonite.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Wow. Are we really in Eppley territory? I guess it’s not Garcia territory ……so there’s that.

    • Havok9120

Everyone has moved up 2 notches in the pecking order. So yeah.

    • jjyank

Eppley is pretty effective against righties…not a terrible call, especially considering the Yankees having their two best relievers on the shelf.

  • stuart a

arod has 19 rbi’s. on pace for the low 70’s. he is a singles hitter. he is a piece of trash……he stinks….

    • Manny’s BanWagon

I can’t imagine what you’re gonna be saying about him in 2017.

    • Scheister of Doom

Is this considered trolling? What if I quasi agree, he IS a singles hitter. He should hit in the two spot with Grandy batting third. But I know that lumps together same side hitters and makes match up easier for the opposing manager.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Dude. I’ve been saying he should be hitting second for ages. The difference between me and the guy up there is I don’t call A-Rod garbage in the process, because I understand that as players get older their skills erode. In Alex’s case his power has eroded, he still gets on base at a decent clip, but he doesn’t hit homers anymore.

      • jjyank

He is losing his power, yes. But he was OBPing near .400 until recently, he is certainly not trash. I totally agree on the #2 hitter thing though.

      • Havok9120

Its only trolling if you’re familiar with the circumstances under which ‘ole stuart a posts. “Piece of trash and he stinks” would be one of those heat of the moment things for 99% of this board’s populace.

  • Manny’s BanWagon

At least Hughes hung in and gave the Yanks some innings instead of totally imploding like an AJ.

    • Havok9120

You know, I hadn’t thought of it that way, but its true. This is a classic 10 run, 2 inning AJ outing written all over it.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      This.

  • stuart a

freddy garcia should not be on the roster……………

    hughes another nice outing. jeez…….

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Am I the only one that feels like Hughes’ family looks like a bunch of pansies?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Never been to Southern California, eh?

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        Haha. Spot on, sir.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Bingo.

      • The Troll

I have the displeasure of living in Orange County in Laguna Beach, right around Mission Viejo where he grew up. With the exception of LB and parts of Newport, the entirety of Orange and LA County are undoubtedly hellacious. It’s one giant, effing shit hole down here.

        • The Troll

Laguna Beach is fantastic. Not sure I got that through or not. The rest is shit.

  • 718 (Bronx)

    You suck Phil Hughes.

    • Scheister of Doom

      I love lamp?

  • Crime Dog

Man, Phelps is getting Noesi’d pretty hard here. On a similar note, anyone else curious as to how long Garcia can waste a roster spot for?

    • Robinson Tilapia

Is being Noesi’d some sort of weird kinky thing? Does it involve an inflated balloon during sex, then being the throw-in in a trade to Seattle?

      • Crime Dog

You were describing being Knoblauch’d up until the Seattle part

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Wow Raul…I’m impressed.

  • Cy Pettitte

I’m not entirely sure that was really Raul

    • Havok9120

      Brett Gardner in disguise.

  • Scheister of Doom

    ROOGY!!

  • jjyank

Did I just hear “nice running catch” and “Ibanez” in the same sentence?

    • Havok9120

Its when he leaves his feet that you know it’ll be GIF-worthy.

He’s had more nice plays out there than I thought possible. Its almost 1-1 Good-Bad at this point.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Andruw doesn’t get that ball

  • Manny’s BanWagon

Trout in gonna be just unreal in a year or two.

  • The Real Slim Trolly

The Yankees are trash. I’m totally rooting for the Orioles now.

    • Scheister of Doom

You stole my handle…that’s disrespectful to Flanny!

      • jjyank

        Haha I had to.

        • Scheister of Doom

The Troll Monger is still in play.

    • Havok9120

Damn you. I was going to use this as my Troll Handle. I’ve never had one before.

      • jjyank

Well my Miracle Stick one died, so I needed a new one!

        • Havok9120

          ‘Tis true.

  • Scheister of Doom

Dear god please pop out, strike out, ground out or foul out.

  • Hummingbird S.

game over.. nice job by everyone on the team! A lot of fail to spread around

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

WOW. Morales is a switch-hitter too. And he just stood up that left-handed and said F U.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Oops. I thought Joe brought Rapada in. He should havehave. Morales is much more danderous as LHB. Bad decision.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle
  • Manny’s BanWagon

Phelpss sure wasted no time throwing gasoline on that fire.

    • Havok9120

But he’s the Once and Future Starter!! He’s to deliver us from the evil Philbert and all that stuff.

  • Robinson Tilapia

I’m going to bed. Score more runs than the Angels while I’m sleeping.

  • flamingo

Well, that didn’t go according to the script.

  • stuart a

arod with a 426 slugging %. then again it is better then russell martin. arod is a glorified singles hitter…. the guy is a joke and he gets zero grief. eppley is garbage. eppley and garcia should not be on the team

angels kill the yanks forever it is a joke…….

    • FIPster Doofus

Wait … A-Rod gets zero grief? hahahaha

      • Havok9120

That was my first thought as well.

    • 1stbase

Yes i think the yanks have done really well against them since 2009

14-13 since 2009. Include this season and the Yanks are 16-14.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m sure you’ve been busy the past week, that’s the only reason you haven’t been around during the five game winning streak. During which we spent a majority of the games winning, so you didn’t have much to complain about.

    • DGeezy

amazing how a player with 636 career HR can be a glorified singles hitter

    • Scheister of Doom

Just breathe, it’s not over yet. We just need a pitcher that doesn’t throw a change and it’s a game again.

    • The Real Slim Trolly

      Don’t steal my job!

What is this thing the angls are doing hits with risp never heard of such a thing

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They’re the third worst hitting team in the league with runners in scoring position. Yanks would look marvelous in those spots if they got to face Hughes too.

  • Karl Krawfid

I’m jealous. They know how to hit with risp.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Why the EFFFFFFF didn’t Joe turn Morales around to bat righty?!?!

Come on boys, don’t go out without a fight!

      Well done sir.

Please stop. You’re adding nothing of value to the conversation.

Pretty sure that was a joke post, Mike. Scroll up a bit.

        • Havok9120

I think that that’s probably his point.

        Both of these are correct.

    Whew. Well….that could’ve gone a lot worse.

    What a great game!

..I mighta mentioned that already, but whatever.

    • jjyank

You did, and you were right. Close games are harder to watch as a Yankee fan, but as a baseball fan, games like this (minus Weaver’s injury) are awesome.

Nice to see them tie the game…goose reason to be up at 7 am

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Serious Question: Where’s Wade, why is Phelps still in?

    • jjyank

I guess at this point, Wade is more of the “eight inning guy”.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

        Logan then?

        • jjyank

First two guys up are righties.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          No lefties due up!

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Logan has been decent against righties…I’m just not comfortable with Phelps in this situation.

            • jjyank

Well the old saying is that the first third of the season is for evaluation, the second is for adjustments, and the last is for just going for it.

I’m cool with seeing how Phelps does against righties in high leverage situations. Especially since they have Garcia as a long guy as well. One of those two needs to be able to pitch non-mop-up innings.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Wade is the eighth inning guy. It’s only the seventh.

    • Need Pitching

tie game, might go extra innings
maybe not a bad idea to try to get another inning from Phelps with bottom of the order due up

  • jjyank

Come on Phelps, hold it here!

  • dkidd

    pickin’ machine!!!

  • Hummingbird S.

I guess a 1-2-3 inning is too much to ask

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Kinda OT, but is Trout eligible for ROY?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Yep, just barely qualifies.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

yeah, I don’t think he had anywhere near the minimum ABs last season to qualify as a rookie.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yeah but there’s a service time limit and he fell short by like, two days.

    • Havok9120

I hope so. It’d be a shame if not.

  • Need Pitching

    wtf Swish

  • Hummingbird S.

    swisher.. simply awful

  • pistol pete

How many runs have the Angels given up tonight in the field? The first inning was a butcher job. They should have gotten out of that inning with no runs. Now the butcher job in right field just cost them two more. Wow and now we’re tied, unbelievable. This game would be a gift is the Yanks win it considering how bad Hughes was and how bad the angels played in the field.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Beautiful.

  • Total Dominication

I love how with the homer and 3 walks before, Teix was still overlooked on the player of the game pool over Martin.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Teix is the Matador of Mayhem

    • Havok9120

Dude, pace yourself. Its only game 1.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        You’re right, you’re right

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

This dude can flat bring heat.

    • jjyank

Yep. He was on my fantasy team last year. Good pitcher.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Was he closing for them? Because I really never understood having anything but a starter or closer on a fantasy team.

        • jjyank

He closed for them, yeah. Lost the job in 2012 after a couple of blown saves though. But I didn’t have him this year, so it’s all good!

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Looks like the standard fireballer, throws it hard but it’s hard to locate.

            • jjyank

Which is why I didn’t draft him this year and was content to catch lightning in a bottle in 2011!

  • Scheister of Doom

Teix’s bat spits hot fire. The three hottest hitters on the Yanks right now? Teixeira, Teixeira and Teixeira.

  • Scheister of Doom

What’s the correct pronunciation of Eric’s Chavez?

All your base belong to RUS.

You’ll be lucky if more than 3 or 4 people here have any idea what the heck you’re talking about.

        • jjyank

I don’t really care. I just enjoyed saying it.

    What a great freaking game…

  • Scheister of Doom

Even when they get a hit with RISP, they don’t score, something’s gotta give and soon!

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Do the Angels have anyone other than Downs left?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Frieri, but he’s pitched in the last two games. Downs has pitched in the last three.

  • Total Dominication

Can anyone give a rundown of what’s left in the ANgel’s pen?

    • Havok9120

Frieri and Downs. One has pitched 2 straight and the other 3.

  • Havok9120

    Ho hum.

Alright guys, lets send this to extras.

Who remembers the navy blue Yankee caps with the American flag in the NY I think they wore ‘em in ’08. I’m really upset I didn’t buy one when I had the chance. They looked so sweet and I can’t find them anywhere.

    • sangreal

I think those hats were from July 4 that year (and 9/11)

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yeah, those where the ones…any idea where I could get one? lol

  • eephus_pitch

This is the part where I want to complain about Jeter’s fucking groundballs and average with RISP.

  • Pat D

    Interesting thread so far.

I’d like for this game to be over in 10 innings. Gotta take the car to the garage by no later than 8:00.

  • Total Dominication

Was Boone for one out in a late tie game really a great idea?

  • Need Pitching

    Fuck, Fuck, fucking fuck

  • Mike Nitabach

    ugh

  • Total Dominication

Well that was disappointing, but not some horrible loss or anything. We absolutely obliterated their bullpen.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    That sucks.

  • dkidd

    that was inevitable

    i hate the angels

  • StanfordBen

    Damn. Still a good game.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    …well fuck.

  • Havok9120

Didn’t see that coming from, like, yesterday. Ugh.

    • Havok9120

Still a very good game though. And productive in terms of bullpen usage.

  • Greg

    Expected, really

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Yep. Trumboed.

  • Scheister of Doom

    Good night.

          “Interesting thread so far.

“I’d like for this game to be over in 10 innings. Gotta take the car to the garage by no later than 8:00.”

First post of the night, asking for the game to end to fit with YOUR SCHEDULE?!11

That had jinx written all over it. C’mon Pat, you’re better than this.

          • Pat D

And that’s why I specifically said “10 innings.”

Sorry, the car issue is my primary concern because I don’t know what’s wrong with it and I’m not looking for a lot of unnecessary expenses as I stare at unemployment.

            • Havok9120

              Dude, you know I’m kidding.

              Right?

              • Pat D

Yes, I do. I still defend myself.

  • Scheister of Doom

This game had walk-off written all over it. Good game.

  • C

3 for 20 with RISP in the last 2 games…and runs have scored on exactly zero of those 3 hits. Can’t keep wasting opportunities

  • Pat D

God, I hate this team and their fucking gerbil-cheeked manager and their fucking fireworks after every fucking home run.

Look, it’s just a home run, not an orgasm.

Gonna be a dick here now and hope Weaver’s on the shelf for a good, long while.

    • eephus_pitch

I saw a game there back in ’06 against the Tigers. The Angels were getting murdered, like 10-1 in the 9th inning. In the bottom of the 9th Gary Matthews hit a solo homer for the halos, and guess what? They shot off the fireworks.
      That’s minor league ballpark bullshit.

      • Pat D

I would have been offended at that if I was an Angels fan.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

I’m with you, buddy. Word for word.

  • Hummingbird S.

11 LOB… thats why you lose a 1-run game. This team sucks, but at least they can beat the As.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

If we played the Astros we could probably beat them too…so yeah…

    • DT

Score 8 runs. Blame the offense… Are you an idiot? Those LOB means shit if we could have had some competent pitching. This game was all on the pitching regardless of the LOB.

    • Need Pitching

      trolls came back quick

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Win the next 2.

  • flamingo

    Ugh.

  • eephus_pitch

This is why I no longer go to games at Angels Stadium. Even the good ones end up breaking my spirit.

  • Kevin

Screw the 11 LOB,when you score eight runs and still lose, that’s on your pitching staff, not your offense.

  • stuart a

maybe they should hit arod 8th., would that insult the little boy? do you think he will have a higher slugging % this year then brett gardner? Arod’s ab’s are awful. he is a total guess hitter…

nice game tonight. great pitching. hughes takes throwing strikes to a new level…..this team cannot hit with RISP…….jeter with a patient ab with th bases loaded….te yanks do more with there opportunities then almost any team in baseball!!!!!!that is a joke of course……..

    • Havok9120

Good to see you made it back on schedule.

    • Pat D

Much like your spelling and punctuation.

    • DT

Jeter is hitting like .290/.330/.350 for May which is terrible. But Arod who is hitting .311/.376/.434 for May deserves to hit 8th. Yeah makes sense. Arod’s Abs are awful but jeter first pitch swinging and grounding out every time with men in RISP isn’t?

  • Pat D

Uh, did they shut the lights off that soon or did they have a power outage? It’s funny either way.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

I think it’s a firework night. Why else have a night game on Memorial Day?

  • Pat D

Jack, they still have Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride at Disneyland.

They only removed it from The Magic Kingdom at Disney World. And I miss it so.

  • stuart a

angels had 3 errors and should have had 4 on the trumbo play..

yanks were handed 3 or 4 runs. there offense is 9thin baseball…

this offense is slow, old, and offensive. they hit solo jacks that is it……….

    • DT

Yankees had 8 runs, 6 without the errors. They had a huge double to tie it by Russ. But pitching gives up 9 runs. So we blame the offense for being old? Stupid fans are stupid.

    • Kevin

and yet they scored eight runs. This loss was on one person, and one person only,Phil Hughes

  • pistol pete

    Well that was quick.

  • stuart a

i forgot on this site talking trash about king arod is a nono. after allhis contract is a fair price for his greatness….

the guy has done 1 thing good ti year and that is steal bases… the guys sluggng is like a 7thor 8th place avg hitter….

arods contract was a folly frm the fat, crew cut steinny fol and we will suffr with him for 5 more years..but hey he was great in 2001…………

    • Need Pitching

      wtf are you talking about?
ARod is constantly slammed on this site. Of course his contract is horrible. Yes he’s older, declining, and losing power.
He’s still easily a top 10 3rd baseman in the game.

    • Pat D

I’d take your gripes more seriously if you used proper grammar. I mean, like, use capital letters, spell words correctly, that kind of stuff.

  • stuart a

dt arod has 18 rbis.. let that sink into your head. maybe we should compare arod to erick aybar… jeter is a 37 year old singles hitter who actually is slugging higher then arod but heck arod is on pace for almost 80 rbi’s this year, give him a raise…

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

You’re embarrassing yourself, Stu. Go to sleep.

    • DT

Jeter had one hot month. His OPS is under .700 for May, While Arod’s is over .800…Also if you are going to call out Arod for not hitting with RISP, why are you not calling out Cano who is our worst hitter with RISP.

    • Tut

      Do you need a hug?

  • stuart a

Yep embarrasing myself by stating that Arod is a joke… Not really debateable after last year and this. COmplain about my grammar and spelling. You my english teacher? This team has not gotten a hit with bases loaded in about 23 ab’. hittin like 150 on the year with bases loaded bu the $25 mill. 3rd baseman is a likeable guy as he gets out on 3 piches all the friggin time..

But hey arod is a top 10 3rdbaseman. the league sucks.Russel Maritn may be a top 10 catcher, that proves what? Maybe we should give Martin a Yankee contract.. I say 3 years $30 mill.after all we do not want to hurt his feelings….. This team is ot liekable and it is frigginold.Look at the ages of this team. Cano the teenager is 29… ANd the yankee fandom wants to give him what? 7 years.. that sounds like another smart move…………

    • Need Pitching

Seriously dude, if you hate the team so much, why bother following them?

What’s not debateable after last year and this is ARod is at least a top 10 3rd baseman, despite being older and in decline. Not sure how being above average is a joke.

And he’s making more than $25M. If you’re going to endlessly rant about him, at least get your facts straight.

    • DT

If you don’t like this team then stop watching them. There are other fans who like the team and enjoy watching them. And why the fuck are you so high on Arod. He’s not the reason we lost, especially when the starter gives up 7 runs and other players have failed in bigger spots this game than Arod. I mean Arod left 1 on base this game, while Cano and Jeter left 4 and both did not hit with RISP in higher leverage spots.

    • Pat D

No, I’m not your English teacher. If I was I should be ashamed of myself.

My point is that with the way you type your thoughts, I can’t read them. Which is what helps make you a troll.

So all I get is ARod sucks blah blah blah Cano sucks Hughes sucks blah blah blah blah blah the whole teams sucks.

  • stuart a

DT everything you say is true. so you want me to state Cano sucks and is horrble with RISP… Jeter is a old singles hitter. All true and Arod sucks. the guy hits 3rd or 4th in this lineup with 18 rbi’s. Tex has been horrible and he has 30 rbi’s.

ALso arod need sto DH all the tim so he can stay healthy.. Arod gives you as bad as ROI of almost any player in baseball, that is how bad he has been.

when we are talking rosy how about Nicky boy down to mid 240’s BA..Let’s give him 3 years on his next deal at $12 mill per year after all in true yankee form we do not wan to insult him…

tonights lineup the teenager is Cano at 29,foolowed by numerous guys ready for the senior circuit……blow this thing up….can they play a guy under 27 or is it against the law………

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Where were you for the last five games?

      • eephus_pitch

Quietly waiting for them to screw up again.

    • DT

Right, name me one young guy that is ready right now? Are they going to pull some shit from thin air? You make zero fucking sense. WTF is a ROI and Arod hasn’t been DHing this year and has been healthy…

    • eephus_pitch

Do you get paid per ellipsis?

    • Mike Stanley

      The…stupid…it…overwhelms…

  • Monterowasdinero

Hip swivel plus hesitation = Japanese pitcher.
