Game 49: Back on Track

"How about eight scoreless and a hit with the bases loaded tonight, Andy?" (REUTERS/Adam Hunger)

The Yankees lost a game last night in which they scored eight runs on the other team needed a full 27 outs from its bullpen. Phil Hughes simply didn’t do his job as the starting pitcher and now the Yankees are looking to Andy Pettitte to stop the losing skid at one. He’s exceeded all possible expectations so far, though he has yet to leave the confines of Yankee Stadium. This is Andy’s first road start of the season, and it comes against a team that’s won seven straight. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
3B Eric Chavez
Russell Martin

LHP Andy Pettitte

Tonight’s game starts a little after 10pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Injury Updates: Brett Gardner took more dry swings in Tampa today and again reported no problems with his strained right elbow. He could hit off a tee as soon as tomorrow … David Robertson played catch again and made 50 throws from flat ground. He came through with flying colors, no problem with his strained left oblique.

  1. Manny's BanWagon says:

Granderson and Arod need to switch spots in the lineup. 15 hrs and 26 RBIs for Granderson means way too many solo shots.

  2. Not looking forward to facing Haren tonight. He is so damn good.

  3. Gone Phishin' says:

These west coast swings really kill my work week, at least half of the swing was over the weekend

  4. Haren is so damn good.

  5. Jose says:

Can someone tell me why they just don’t leave the lineup alone? They keep changing it every other game and I think that confuses hitters and why some hitters seem to be on a slump sometimes. I would leave it like we have it today…since it seems to have worked yesterday. But stop changing it so much…

  6. I didnt think Pujols came to the AL and forgot how to hit, but it would have been very funny if he did.

  7. Reggie C. says:

I’ll probably watch an hour’s worth of the game tonight.

Okay boys. Lets avoid the collisions tonight. Mmmkay??

  8. Alkaline says:

I’ll feel better once Robertson is back.

And random, but is anyone else having issues with comments recently..? There are times where the number is messed up and other times where I comment but it doesn’t show?

  9. Reggie C. says:

    Babip sucks.

  10. eephus_pitch says:

Erick Aybar’s teeth are straight out of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

  11. Cuso says:

Robbie’s been getting a little first-pitch sloppy lately.

  12. mike_h says:

    lets go Andy!!!!

  13. Will The Thrill says:

Cano would be more of a beast if he learned to work the count and wait for his pitch. But sadly he thinks he can hit every pitch thrown and has bad at bats.

  14. Trout’s a Jersey kid? I wasn’t aware.

  15. Tom says:

When was the last time the Angels didn’t have a couple of bloop/jam shots or infield singles?

Seems like every game they have one or two (especially at Ana)

  16. Karl Krawfid says:

This is the only Stadium where the Yankees can lose a game in the first inning.

  17. Manny's BanWagon says:

Trumbo is either due for a major regression or he’s become a beast.

  18. Cuso says:

    Well done Andynonymous

  19. Will The Thrill says:

If only we had a rotation of CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte clones…

  20. I wonder what it’s like to be in a Divison with two AAAA teams in it…

  21. Cy Pettitte says:

    fuck this guy

  22. FUCK. YOU. MIKE. TROUT. That was fucking incredible.

  23. flamingo says:

    Booooo Trout.

  24. Need Pitching says:

    I hate Trout

  25. FIPster Doofus says:

    I already loathe Mike Trout.

  26. Karl Krawfid says:

Robbed of a double. Poor Swish.

  27. Cuso says:

    Trout is so filthy.

  28. Hummingbird S. says:

    this dude is amazing..

  29. Kramerica Industries says:

    Time for a McCarverism!

The catch from Trout was as good as Ken Singleton’s call was bad. Even if it was genuine, that sounded so damned forced that I can’t take it seriously.

  30. Haha, he unintentionally punched himself in the face while making that play. That makes it a little better.

  31. Chris says:

Okay, I’ve have to say this: I’m old guy, old enough to have seen my first Yankee game in 1958 and old enough to have watched a lot Mantle games when he was in his prime. (I was raised ten blocks from the Stadium.) Man, Mantle was exciting to watch. Now I’m not saying Trout is Mantle, but he’s got that same spark and set of tools. Just an awesome young baseball star

  32. Cuso says:

Yikes. That Teix face didn’t look good.

  33. Reggie C. says:

Gotta hope there’s a little Trout in one of our OF prospects. I thought Slade would be it, but injuries might’ve sapped the kid of some game power.

  34. Hummingbird S. says:

Haren is exactly the type of pitcher with great command that will give this team fits, right? Any chance they get to him at all?

  35. Kramerica Industries says:

    So, the question burns on:

Harper or Trout? Both are playing great ball and they’re only 19 and 20. I shudder to think how good they’ll become.

  36. Hummingbird S. says:

    horrendous AB by Granderson

  37. Karl Krawfid says:

Gawd damn Grandy. How many offspeed pitches are you gonna look terrible on?

  38. flamingo says:

    Wow, listen to those boos.

  39. Hummingbird S. says:

swing at that cookie Alex… he lets the easy pitch go and swing at the bad one.

  40. Chris says:

A-rod looks like he put some weight on in his core. Maybe changed his training routine to try and get a little more power there after his surgery?

  41. Hummingbird S. says:

    damn… cant catch a break.

  42. Stratman9652 says:

I get that A-rod is a bit of a douche, but is it really necessary to boo him every time he comes up? There are so many bigger asshats in this game.

  43. Lol, I would’ve flown to LA and killed Aybar if he made that play.

  44. Cy Pettitte says:

Kendrick is so wrong, it wasn’t even close

  45. flamingo says:

    C’mon, Robbie, do your thing.

  46. Somebody took a pitch with the bases loaded…I may die of shock.

  47. Will The Thrill says:

Dan Haren’s splitter is just unfair. Remind me again why we didn’t trade Nova, Joba and Betances for him again?

  48. Rainbow connection says:

  49. Cy Pettitte says:

    didn’t look like a strike

  50. jon says:

    way outside

  51. ….that was an interesting call.

and by interesting I mean terrible.

  52. Karl Krawfid says:

    So bad with risp.

  53. Hummingbird S. says:

with this production Cano might be affordable after all.. he’s not right.

  54. DT says:

Cano’s hitting approach is so bad with RISP. I mean did he seriously take a HR swing on that split finger?

  55. flamingo says:

Didn’t Robbie hit over .400 last year with the bases loaded? Freaking Dan Haren.

  56. Tom says:

Pitch was outside by a considerable amount – hate it how umps will call it based simply on hitting the catcher’s mitt.

  57. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

    That pitch was way outside

  58. Will The Thrill says:

Argh. This RISP fail is just too much to bare. Our 3-4-5 hitters suck monkey balls when it comes to getting the job done.

  59. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

Umpire has angels underwear on tonight

  60. Athenian says:

It is amazing how a 5 game winning streak can mask the continued failure of RISP. This failure is now coming up on a full month , making them almost the 2011 Giants.

Hitless in last 13 AB with based loaded and 1 for 32. That is just down right shitty, especially for a 200 mil payroll.

  61. eephus_pitch says:

There are so many aggravating things about Yanks vs. Angels, but the worst? It’s that the Angels do everything wrong, from a SABR standpoint. They give away outs like they’re going out of style. Incessant bunts, botched hit-and-runs, caught stealings, you name it.
But against the Yanks, it all works. And Scioscia ends up looking like a genius. Which he surely is not.

  62. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

    Man that was strike three

  63. Cy Pettitte says:

    I fucking hate this guy.

and that 2-2 pitch was a strike if the pitch to Robbie was a strike.

  64. jon says:

where was that strike 3 call?

  65. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

    Umpire 1
    Yanks 0

  66. Need Pitching says:

    I really, really hate Trout

  67. Hummingbird S. says:

1×0 ump… nice of him to not K Trout

also great D by the Yankees allowing a triple to left field

  68. flamingo says:

Wow, I really hate this guy.

  69. Mr. Pink says:

I just want this series to end already. Something about the Yankees playing in Anaheim makes me uneasy. Plus I HATE staying up late to watch the games.

  70. Tom says:

Holy crap…. if he’s going to Haren that pitch to Cano, Andy’s got to get that against righties.

It’s crap how umpire call asymmetrical zones (they will call outside pitches to lefties, but less to righties)

  71. Cuso says:

Somebody needs to make a Trout voodoo doll.

  72. Manny's BanWagon says:

Trout can fly. I can’t think of anyone else who, would have had a triple on that play.

  73. Rick says:

Looks like I found a new angel to hate.

  74. Robinson Tilapia says:

That’s it. Sign Coal Hammmels just so he can bean Mike Trout.

  75. Athenian says:

Well that does not look good.

  76. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

    Umpire 3
    Yanks 0

    • Athenian says:

Dude! Don’t blame the umps. This team self destructs every inning they bat. You can’t expect the entire pitching staff to hold teams to one run just so they have a chance.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

        • Athenian says:

Um damn near. But thanks for running with my statement and blowing firmly out of context. Someday, I will learn English as well as you.

          • Robinson Tilapia says:

            1. Next time, you might consider trying to correct someone’s grammar when they’re actually trying to write in complete sentences, Mr. “‘Um damn near’ as a sentence.”

            2. “This team self destructs every inning they bat.” It’s pretty hard to take this out of context. It’s also grammatically incorrect but, really, who’s counting.

            3. Someday, you’ll actually show up on here when the team is winning.

  77. Hummingbird S. says:

it keeps on getting better.. they cant hit and they cant pitch!

  78. flamingo says:

UGH THIS TERRIBLE TEAM. (Angels, obvs.)

  79. Tom says:

    Umps 3, Angels 0, Yankees 0

  80. Karl Krawfid says:

    Shit never fails man.

  81. RBC says:

When I heard the crack of the bat, I knew that was gone.

  82. Cuso says:

Pujols must’ve seen Wally Matthews article on Pettitte v. Pujols.

  83. Chris says:

Oof. That’s what they paid for.

  84. jon says:

man jeter has NO range anymore

    kinda sad

  85. Need Pitching says:

amazing watching the difference in range between the two SS playing today

  86. I really think if the field isn’t shrouded in fireworks smoke Jeter might make that play.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Another reason why Scoiscia’s a genius: He implements “The Hunger Games” while the Yankees are on the field.

  87. Cuso says:

    Wheels falling off.

  88. jon says:

wow umps really want the angles to win huh

  89. Need Pitching says:

    fucking umpires

  90. Hummingbird S. says:

Cano playing like a blind man, missed the tag

  91. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

Girardi needs to throw a fit and get tossed

  92. Karl Krawfid says:

Just missed the foot? Come the hell on. This is why you can’t watch most away broadcast. Dude was OUT.

  93. Chris says:

The umps better even this up before the end of the game.

  94. Cuso says:

    Call a damn strike!!

  95. Mr. Pink says:

This Angels series really came at a bad time.

  96. Chris says:

I’m still trying to understand the Abbot trade.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

      As in Jim?

Yanks in need of starters badly and, frankly, something to draw attendance. JT Snow blocked by Mattingly at first. No one knew Russ Springer would pitch for an eternity.

    • Rainbow connection says:

      One handed guy.

    • Chris says:

Snow was blocked but those were good players to give up. Abbot was a nice guy, but we needed a lot of things in those days. i think the team could have done better.

  97. Mike Axisa says:

    J.T. Snow for trivia?

  98. Manny's BanWagon says:

Haren’s delivery reminds me a little of David Cones.

  99. Athenian says:

Well good thing they swept Oakland. Will make a .500 road trip not so bad. Glimmer of hope ……splat!

    • Need Pitching says:

wow, not only is this game over by the fourth inning, but the next game is already over too

      why are you watching?

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

The real question, of course, is “Why are you never here during wins?”

        • Athenian says:

Hey dumbass, It is 6:25 am in Greece. My apologies for not being completely available for very game. Regardless of what your American tv reports, people do,have jobs here. Oh and then that thing called sleep.

      • Athenian says:

Have radio and and game day. So not watching anything.

  100. Hummingbird S. says:

  101. Garbage time. All you have to do is avoid left field.

  102. flamingo says:

    Two hits in a row!

  103. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

Martin will be lucky to hit his weight this year.

  104. mike_h says:

our record at Anaheim since 2009 is 6-11, we just don’t play well there

  105. Mr. Pink says:

Looking at the Angels’ homegrown young players like Trout, Trumbo, Bourjos, Aybar, Kendrick and Weaver, it makes me kinda jealous of the kind of talent their farm system has turned out. Plus they have more prospects on the way…

    • look at our homegrown guys like Robertson, Gardner, Cano, Nova, Jeter, Phelps…

      • Mr. Pink says:

Um Nova and Phelps aren’t exactly guys you should be proud of. Nova had one okay season and has fifth starter stuff, Phelps has a meatball fastball and nothing else. Cano of course is a star. Jeter was like forever ago I’m taking about guys our farm has produced within the last five years. Gardner is a good but to great player and Robertson is a nice above average reliever. That’s nothing compared to the guys the Angels have churned out.

  106. Robinson Tilapia says:

Bedtime. Hope for no insomnia and 4:00 comments tonight. Score more runs than the Angels, please.

  107. eephus_pitch says:

Goddammit. Get his pitch count up.

  108. Cuso says:

    Scioscia Face.

  109. Karl Krawfid says:

This is so hard to watch. Now Jeter is coming back to sucktitude with the others.

  110. Mr. Pink says:

Hmm. I can’t decide which team I hate to lose to more. Angels, Rays or Red Sox?

  111. Nathan says:

This offense needs to get back to Oakland, stat.

The more I watch A-Rod, the more and more he seems like he’s in decline. It’s painfully apparent that he isn’t an elite player anymore. I can’t remember the last time he’s come up with a clutch hit, let alone anything with any sort of power.

This just feels like a game where the Yankees are going to get NOTHING going, just a bunch of weak grounders. This plus the deflating loss last night reminds me why I hate watching games against the Angels.

    • eephus_pitch says:

You’re just now figuring out A-Rod was in decline? He’s a shell of his former self. Yeah, he’s still good, and some people will boast that he’s still a top 10 third baseman, but that’s not what they’re paying him to be. Top 10 third baseman doesn’t impress me.
Obviously, money isn’t going to make him an elite player anymore. I don’t think anything will. He is who he is.

      • I’ve come to terms with Alex’s contract. There is nothing the Yankees can do about it, and I’m not and never was mad at him for it. I was/am mad at Hank for doing it.

        • eephus_pitch says:

It’s not like there’s some amazing third baseman out there that the Yanks could have, but there are times when this contract (and the remaining years) make you want to cry.

      • Nathan says:

No, I’ve realized that he’s been in decline since ’09. The past few years of not being able to stay healthy maybe masked the decline by rationalizing “he isn’t playing as well due to the injuries”.

I think ’09 was his last hurrah as an impact player. I think he’s still a good player but elite/impact, those days appear to be gone. At this point, I’d be thrilled to get 30 HRs/100 RBIs but that might be a stretch the way the season is going.

  112. Cuso says:

If Swisher ran into Cano I would’ve blown a gasket

  113. Cuso says:

    Trout is fast.

    Trout is powerful.

    Trout is talented.

    Trout talks to himself.

    Trout is insane.

  114. Cy Pettitte says:

    Chavez is so good

  115. Cuso says:

They just Price is Right’d Teix. Bastards.

  116. Hummingbird S. says:

glad to see the team go out like a bunch of wimps..

  117. Chris says:

That was a whole bunch of nasty pitches.

  118. flamingo says:

  119. aRX says:

    I fucking hate the Angels.

  120. Pat D says:

God, I hate the fucking Angels.

  121. FIPster Doofus says:

Isn’t Trumbo the same asshole who had a sub-.300 OBP last year? He’s Babe fucking Ruth now?

  122. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

Could have had trumbo for robertson in the spring.

  123. I really hate those goddamned fireworks.

  124. Manny's BanWagon says:

Who said Trumbo can’t hit a breaking ball before?

  125. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

When does Trumbo go back to hitting .250 and his sub-.300 OBP?

  126. flamingo says:

This team and their stupid bunts.

  127. Hummingbird S. says:

what can this bunch of overpaid suckers do? they cant hit, they cant pitch and they cant field.

  128. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

    Yeah push bunting

  129. Chris says:

    This game is defiantly winnable.

  130. Stratman9652 says:

Anyone remember the last time Robbie got to first in time on a drag bunt? Granted he was really far away that time but half the time he barely tries. For as many thing he does well in the field covering first on a bunt is not one of them.

  131. Athenian says:

Angels are just playing to well for the Yanks. When a team is hot they are hot, I guess.

  132. flamingo says:

    Is this a joke?

  133. FIPster Doofus says:

    Oh, fuck off, Bourjos.

  134. Swish should be 3-3 with two doubles.

  135. Pat D says:

Did I mention I fucking hate the Angels?

  136. Chris says:

That outfield has got it in for Swisher.

  137. eephus_pitch says:

Yanks just cannot catch a break against this fucking team.

  138. 1stbase says:

Man these two in the outfield are putting on a clinic

  139. Cuso says:

Stop the insanity. Now you’re all just showing off.

  140. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Granderson strikeout, Cano strikeout, A-Rod strikeout, Tex strikeout, Russell Martin base hit…

  141. flamingo says:

C’mon, Yanks. Haren might be getting tired.

  142. Karl Krawfid says:

If only the Yankees could do this with risp we would have 6 more wins.

  143. Mr. Pink says:

Anyone else not feeling a Grandy extension if he keeps striking out like this?

  144. Cuso says:

Granderson is gonna walk. Arod gonna K.

  145. Hummingbird S. says:

another weak hack with men on! way to go offense..

  146. flamingo says:

I’m shipping a truckload of four leaf clovers to Yankee Stadium tonight.

  147. Will The Thrill says:

Too many smiles on the faces of the Angels tonight.

  148. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

I can watch the rest of this shit pile

  149. Tom says:

I think that’s 7 of the last 10 pitches to Grandy that have been splitters.

  150. The bronx bombers who like to bunt says:

Horrible at bat by granderson remember when the yanks used to grind out at bats

  151. Pat D says:

    Curtis is too nice.

He should have tried to run through Trumbo.

    /or am i’d

  152. Hummingbird S. says:

will there ever be a start where our SP dont give up at least one HR?

  153. Cy Pettitte says:

what no amazing catch by Trout?

  154. pat says:

I hate when we get shut down by no name bums like Dan Haren.

  155. pistol pete says:

Cano’s my favorite Yankee but he’s really sucked in LA the last two nights.

  156. FIPster Doofus says:

    lol at Cano

  157. Alex should’ve taken off for third. Fuck it, odds are we loose this game so take a chance.

  158. Wow…if our defense had half this range…

  159. Karl Krawfid says:

Another hit with risp that doesn’t score a run.

  160. DT says:

    Goddamn Defense….

  161. Cy Pettitte says:

    Do it Andruw.

  162. Hummingbird S. says:

so that’s how you play D… nice

  163. Pat D says:

OMG! Jones actually pinch hitting against a LHP!!

  164. Jones tried to tie it with that swing.

  165. aRX says:

Please knock one into the lights Andruw…

  166. Athenian says:

This is their best chance, maybe the last .

  167. Wow…same pitch three times, and Jones couldn’t hit it.

  168. Hummingbird S. says:

pathetic, always taking HR swings and ends up with the K… fucking awful

  169. Cuso says:

Hit it where they ain’t swisher

  170. Cuso says:

If swisher walks do they pinch hit nix?

  171. Cy Pettitte says:

I’m so sick of this fucking outfield

  172. flamingo says:

  173. eephus_pitch says:

    I want everyone to die.

  174. FIPster Doofus says:

Swisher has gotten absolutely screwed in this series.

  175. Karl Krawfid says:

    We suck.

  176. DT says:

Fuck the Angels defense…every series against them feels like this shit.

  177. Chris says:

Swish is an equal opportunity swinger. He flied out to LF, RF, CF.

  178. Manny's BanWagon says:

That damn outfield is like an Olympic relay team out there.

  179. Athenian says:

That’s it…. Someone asked Mark Feinsand who was worse, the 2008 or 2012 Yankees. His response, still to early. Tat is not a good response.

  180. aRX says:

Well, at least our bullpen will be nice and rested.

  181. Tom says:

At least Swish had a decent approach at the plate.

When runners get on base it seems like nearly every Yankee (except Jeter) is trying to pull a HR and swing out of their shoes.

Wish they would settle for just serving one the other way on a pitch outside instead of trying to blast everything and rolling over on outside pitches. With men on base pitchers tend to pound the outside corner, and the Yankees seem to make no adjustment.

  182. Chris says:

Pettite pitched well, but I’d get him out of there and save his arm

  183. eephus_pitch says:

Andy’s been better than we could have expected, but he can’t keep giving up homers at this rate.

  184. Karl Krawfid says:

Another ground ball from the 40 year old and the Yankees can’t get it.

  185. FIPster Doofus says:

Decent job by Pettitte. No support.

  186. DT says:

Well we got swept by the Angels in 2009 before the all star beak (and were a lot more games behind first place)…so it can’t be that bad right now…

  187. Chris says:

Andy’s always given up homers. The Yankees had several chances to close this game up. Pettit’es line and Harren’s line are pretty close, so the result of this game is in the Yankee bats.

    • eephus_pitch says:

He’s never given up homers like this. I know it’s only 4 games, but 6 homers in 4 games is way too many.

  188. FIPster Doofus says:

Chavez is so smooth at third.

  189. Need Pitching says:

    where the fuck was Cano?

  190. Karl Krawfid says:

Great defensive positioning. I Guess they think we’re the Rays.

  191. Why does our defense always seem to be in a bad spot. For example, why is Cano holding Pujols on there? Especially with Kendrick at bat, who loves using that hole?

  192. Mr. Pink says:

Cano for Bryce Harper. Would you do it?

  193. DT says:

I hate the Angels and their BABIP, Stupid goddamn defense and all that crap. I hope Texas kills them in their division.

  194. eephus_pitch says:

“I thought Andy pitched a very good game. He was hurt by the two homeruns, obviously.”

Thanks, Sterling. Thank you for lowering the bar to the point where pitching to an ERA of 6 is your idea of a good game.

  195. Chris says:

Holding Puljois on 2nd is like holding a mack truck on 2nd. The big is not going anywhere, and that hole was huge.

  196. Mr. Pink says:

    Fuck this old ass team…

  197. eephus_pitch says:

Howie Kendrick’s Hall of Fame speech should be interesting.

  198. DT says:

Goddamn the Angels are just downright annoying.

  199. Hummingbird S. says:

    great move bringing in Nix

  200. Chris says:

I always get depressed when I go to LA.

  201. Tom says:

Can the Yankees stop playing every hitter like they are a pull hitter?

The Kendrick groundball was obviously bad, but why the hell is Jeter so far up the middle against “dead pull” Eric Aybar?

It seems like Girardi is compelled to shade either Cano (against righties) or Jeter (against lefties) up the middle.

  202. Karl Krawfid says:

Yankee beat writers are so fucking annoying. Following these idiots on Twitter is making this game worse.

  203. Purple Haze says:

This Yankee team is frustrating as hell. They are the most fucking inconsistent Yankee team I’ve seen…

  204. eephus_pitch says:

Scioscia seems to whine and pull a face at EVERY pitch that goes against his pitchers.

  205. This kid seems a little wild…can we please continue taking advantage of that?

  206. Tom says:

Tying run up…. oh wait it’s not thanks to routine groundballs against shifted infields.

  207. I still think that pitch to lefties is a ball…

    FUCK YOU MIKE TROUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  208. Cy Pettitte says:

    Fuck Trout.

  209. aRX says:

    Oh fuck you.

  210. flamingo says:

    Nice AB from Jeter.

(I can’t believe I’m staying up to watch this train wreck. It’ll all be worth it if it turns itself around, though.)

  211. Purple Haze says:

    Fuck you Mike Trout.

  212. DT says:

Fuck the Angels…Fuck this game. The team actually had some nice AB with RISP but nothing is dropping.

  213. Cuso says:

A-Rod is overmatched by the bat boy.

  214. Robbie. You better Take. A. Fucking. Pitch.

  215. Cy Pettitte says:

Cano has to do this. pay back for all the bullshit this series.

  216. Karl Krawfid says:

The night must end like this.

  217. Cuso says:

    Cano is so going yard.

  218. again…that pitch is outside. I’m sorry I don’t care what an umpire says.

  219. aRX says:

    Please please please…

  220. Cy Pettitte says:

    great AB Robbie….

  221. Purple Haze says:

Ernesto Frieri = Angels’ David Robertson

  222. flamingo says:

    On three pitches.

    I hate this park.

  223. Need Pitching says:

and Cano continues to leave small armies of men on base …

  224. DT says:

Cano really is trying for a home run swing every time with RISP.

  225. Karl Krawfid says:

Way to show some heart Cano.

    Fuck this team.

  226. ArchStanton says:

    Cano is killing this team.

  227. Hummingbird S. says:

yeah, that sums up this season so far.. great swings by Cano and another out with the bases loaded!

But at least they showed some fight, right??

  228. what bullshit. Bad calls by umpires, awful strikezones, excellent defense by the opponents, horrible placement by out defense…just overall not a fun game.

  229. Purple Haze says:

I’m starting to believe that this RISP problem will never go away and will continue to haunt us as the season goes on.

  230. eephus_pitch says:

As soon as the Yanks get the bases loaded you can just get up and go to the bathroom.
When will the inevitable correction come? It’s murder watching this.

  231. dkidd says:

on a positive note, melky cabrera is now batting .373

  232. Purple Haze says:

Cano is really going out of his element this year. Hacking at really bad pitches, swinging and missing more, not doing shit with people on base. Something isn’t right with him. Maybe he is going Teixeira on us and trying to live up to what he and Boras hope is a huge contract…

  233. eephus_pitch says:

It seems completely impossible that a team would be this bad with the bases loaded. When a pitcher is MOST on the ropes, this team as a whole can do nothing.

  234. Tom says:

This AB summed the game up (1st and 3rd, 1 out, Yankees down 3. A Jones);s_type=3

5 sinkers, one of which was marginally in the strikezone. Jones was either ahead or neutral in the count and swung at 3 pitches.

To me this is the RISP issue… too many hitters playing hero ball. Rather than hit the ball where it is pitched or take a walk, they want to yank one as opposed to just keep moving the rally along. Pitchers know this and feed the Yankees a steady diet of pitches on the outside corner or offspeed stuff.

  235. DT says:

The Angels defense robbed us of at least 4 runs this game.
The Arod single with RISP knocked down
the Tex single with RISP knocked down
Swisher had 3 hard hit balls in the gap that were caught, once with RISP
Grandy hits a bloop with risp..trout makes a diving catch

  236. Will The Thrill says:

Things I learned from this game.

-Yanks will continue to give up a minimum of two homeruns a game
    -Granderson strikes out a lot
-Cano is not an RBI Machine™
-Arod has turned into a singles hitter
-RISP Fail is a disease and Yanks have yet to find a cure
-My hate for the Angels surpasses my hate for the Rays/Red Sox
-Mark Trumbo has the most effortless power I’ve ever seen
-Mike Trout is good and the Yankees should learn from missing out on him and collect those draft picks son.
-RISP Fail gives me stress rashes
-Dan Haren is good and we probably should’ve traded for him
-Mike Trout is good at baseball
    -RISP Fail sucks

    • Evan3457 says:

The Yanks “missed out” on Trout because the Angels grabbed him with the 25th pick in the 1st round while their 1st pitch was #29.

That 25th pick originally belonged to the Yanks, but they forfeited it to sign a free agent…

      …Mark Teixiera.

      • Mike Axisa says:

They Angels picked 24th, not 29th. Their scouting director said the only reason they took him 25th (with the Tex pick) instead of 24th (with their natural pick) was to keep his slot value down. Go through the DotF archives, I linked to the article a few weeks ago because the Yankees were going to draft him.
