Game 49: Back on Track

2012 Draft: Ty Moore
Cust homers twice in wild Triple-A win
"How about eight scoreless and a hit with the bases loaded tonight, Andy?" (REUTERS/Adam Hunger)

The Yankees lost a game last night in which they scored eight runs on the other team needed a full 27 outs from its bullpen. Phil Hughes simply didn’t do his job as the starting pitcher and now the Yankees are looking to Andy Pettitte to stop the losing skid at one. He’s exceeded all possible expectations so far, though he has yet to leave the confines of Yankee Stadium. This is Andy’s first road start of the season, and it comes against a team that’s won seven straight. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
3B Eric Chavez
Russell Martin

LHP Andy Pettitte

Tonight’s game starts a little after 10pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Injury Updates: Brett Gardner took more dry swings in Tampa today and again reported no problems with his strained right elbow. He could hit off a tee as soon as tomorrow … David Robertson played catch again and made 50 throws from flat ground. He came through with flying colors, no problem with his strained left oblique.

2012 Draft: Ty Moore
Cust homers twice in wild Triple-A win
  • Manny’s BanWagon

Granderson and Arod need to switch spots in the lineup. 15 hrs and 26 RBIs for Granderson means way too many solo shots.

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Steve Sciacco

Not looking forward to facing Haren tonight. He is so damn good.

  • Gone Phishin’

These west coast swings really kill my work week, at least half of the swing was over the weekend

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Steve Sciacco

    Haren is so damn good.

  • Jose

Can someone tell me why they just don’t leave the lineup alone? They keep changing it every other game and I think that confuses hitters and why some hitters seem to be on a slump sometimes. I would leave it like we have it today…since it seems to have worked yesterday. But stop changing it so much…

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Steve Sciacco

because the other teams keep changing pitchers. Once they stop doing that. We can leave the lineup alone.

    • Rainbow connection

Batting order makes no difference anyway.

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Steve Sciacco

I didnt think Pujols came to the AL and forgot how to hit, but it would have been very funny if he did.

  • Reggie C.

I’ll probably watch an hour’s worth of the game tonight.

Okay boys. Lets avoid the collisions tonight. Mmmkay??

  • Alkaline

I’ll feel better once Robertson is back.

And random, but is anyone else having issues with comments recently..? There are times where the number is messed up and other times where I comment but it doesn’t show?

  • Reggie C.

    Babip sucks.

  • eephus_pitch

Erick Aybar’s teeth are straight out of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Robbie’s been getting a little first-pitch sloppy lately.

  • mike_h

    lets go Andy!!!!

  • Will The Thrill

Cano would be more of a beast if he learned to work the count and wait for his pitch. But sadly he thinks he can hit every pitch thrown and has bad at bats.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He tried that earlier in the season and was slumping because of it. I’m pretty sure he saw more pitches per AB in April than any other month of his career…i don’t know where to double check that though, and he slumped for the entire month.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Trout’s a Jersey kid? I wasn’t aware.

    • Rainbow connection

He looks like a typical jersey douche to me.

  • Tom

When was the last time the Angels didn’t have a couple of bloop/jam shots or infield singles?

Seems like every game they have one or two (especially at Ana)

  • Karl Krawfid

This is the only Stadium where the Yankees can lose a game in the first inning.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

You sound like my Met fan friend talking about Atlanta.

      • Karl Krawfid

I hate that damn stadium. 3 years in a row I went. Watched 2 games each time. No wins.

  • Manny’s BanWagon

Trumbo is either due for a major regression or he’s become a beast.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

He’s a beast on anything with no break on it.

      • Manny’s BanWagon

Wasn’t it a breaking ball last night from Wade that he sent into orbit?

        • Karl Krawfid

          Change.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That sentence reminds me of Shelley Duncan and the Man-Crush every yankee fan had on him.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Well done Andynonymous

  • Will The Thrill

If only we had a rotation of CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte clones…

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I wonder what it’s like to be in a Divison with two AAAA teams in it…

  • Cy Pettitte

    fuck this guy

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

FUCK. YOU. MIKE. TROUT. That was fucking incredible.

  • flamingo

    Booooo Trout.

  • Need Pitching

    I hate Trout

    • Tom

I think Kendrick’s issue was it looked like the ump ruled he was off the bag.

The ump got the call right, but called it wrong (should have just ruled safe instead of off the bag)

      • Tom

        Yikes… major reply fail

  • FIPster Doofus

    I already loathe Mike Trout.

  • Karl Krawfid

Robbed of a double. Poor Swish.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Trout is so filthy.

  • Hummingbird S.

    this dude is amazing..

  • Kramerica Industries

    Time for a McCarverism!

The catch from Trout was as good as Ken Singleton’s call was bad. Even if it was genuine, that sounded so damned forced that I can’t take it seriously.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha, he unintentionally punched himself in the face while making that play. That makes it a little better.

  • Chris

Okay, I’ve have to say this: I’m old guy, old enough to have seen my first Yankee game in 1958 and old enough to have watched a lot Mantle games when he was in his prime. (I was raised ten blocks from the Stadium.) Man, Mantle was exciting to watch. Now I’m not saying Trout is Mantle, but he’s got that same spark and set of tools. Just an awesome young baseball star

    • Manny’s BanWagon

      That’s some Tremendous compliment.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Quick, get Tex some cough meds!!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Yikes. That Teix face didn’t look good.

  • Reggie C.

Gotta hope there’s a little Trout in one of our OF prospects. I thought Slade would be it, but injuries might’ve sapped the kid of some game power.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I think Mason is the only guy in the system who can be anything near what Mike Trout is supposed to be.

      • Kevin Winters

Too bad he’s like 3 yrs away

  • Hummingbird S.

Haren is exactly the type of pitcher with great command that will give this team fits, right? Any chance they get to him at all?

  • Kramerica Industries

    So, the question burns on:

Harper or Trout? Both are playing great ball and they’re only 19 and 20. I shudder to think how good they’ll become.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I really think it’s a coin flip, but Harper plays the game with a reckless abandon that very few other players do.

    • JobaWockeeZ

      Harper.

      • JobaWockeeZ

And by Harper I mean Trout.

  • Hummingbird S.

    horrendous AB by Granderson

  • Karl Krawfid

Gawd damn Grandy. How many offspeed pitches are you gonna look terrible on?

  • flamingo

    Wow, listen to those boos.

  • Hummingbird S.

swing at that cookie Alex… he lets the easy pitch go and swing at the bad one.

  • Chris

A-rod looks like he put some weight on in his core. Maybe changed his training routine to try and get a little more power there after his surgery?

  • Hummingbird S.

    damn… cant catch a break.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

I get that A-rod is a bit of a douche, but is it really necessary to boo him every time he comes up? There are so many bigger asshats in this game.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Lol, I would’ve flown to LA and killed Aybar if he made that play.

  • Cy Pettitte

Kendrick is so wrong, it wasn’t even close

  • flamingo

    C’mon, Robbie, do your thing.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Somebody took a pitch with the bases loaded…I may die of shock.

    • eephus_pitch

Outcome’s the same, blast it all.

    • Hummingbird S.

problem is, the pitch he took was a 84mph flat cutter down the middle.. they cant get it right

  • Will The Thrill

Dan Haren’s splitter is just unfair. Remind me again why we didn’t trade Nova, Joba and Betances for him again?

  • Rainbow connection

    Fail

  • Cy Pettitte

    didn’t look like a strike

  • jon

    way outside

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    ….that was an interesting call.

and by interesting I mean terrible.

    • eephus_pitch

Was it outside? I can’t watch. Only get the Angels feed, and it’s excruciating painful.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It looked outside by at least an inch or two. I would love another replay but it looked outside.

  • Karl Krawfid

    So bad with risp.

  • Hummingbird S.

with this production Cano might be affordable after all.. he’s not right.

  • DT

Cano’s hitting approach is so bad with RISP. I mean did he seriously take a HR swing on that split finger?

  • flamingo

Didn’t Robbie hit over .400 last year with the bases loaded? Freaking Dan Haren.

  • Tom

Pitch was outside by a considerable amount – hate it how umps will call it based simply on hitting the catcher’s mitt.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

    That pitch was way outside

  • Will The Thrill

Argh. This RISP fail is just too much to bare. Our 3-4-5 hitters suck monkey balls when it comes to getting the job done.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

Umpire has angels underwear on tonight

  • Athenian

It is amazing how a 5 game winning streak can mask the continued failure of RISP. This failure is now coming up on a full month , making them almost the 2011 Giants.

Hitless in last 13 AB with based loaded and 1 for 32. That is just down right shitty, especially for a 200 mil payroll.

  • eephus_pitch

There are so many aggravating things about Yanks vs. Angels, but the worst? It’s that the Angels do everything wrong, from a SABR standpoint. They give away outs like they’re going out of style. Incessant bunts, botched hit-and-runs, caught stealings, you name it.
But against the Yanks, it all works. And Scioscia ends up looking like a genius. Which he surely is not.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

    Man that was strike three

  • Cy Pettitte

    I fucking hate this guy.

and that 2-2 pitch was a strike if the pitch to Robbie was a strike.

  • jon

where was that strike 3 call?

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

    Umpire 1
    Yanks 0

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Fuck you Mike Trout.

  • Need Pitching

    I really, really hate Trout

  • Hummingbird S.

1×0 ump… nice of him to not K Trout

also great D by the Yankees allowing a triple to left field

  • flamingo

Wow, I really hate this guy.

  • Mr. Pink

I just want this series to end already. Something about the Yankees playing in Anaheim makes me uneasy. Plus I HATE staying up late to watch the games.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    nice play Chavez.

  • Tom

Holy crap…. if he’s going to Haren that pitch to Cano, Andy’s got to get that against righties.

It’s crap how umpire call asymmetrical zones (they will call outside pitches to lefties, but less to righties)

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Somebody needs to make a Trout voodoo doll.

  • Manny’s BanWagon

Trout can fly. I can’t think of anyone else who, would have had a triple on that play.

  • Rick

Looks like I found a new angel to hate.

  • Robinson Tilapia

That’s it. Sign Coal Hammmels just so he can bean Mike Trout.

    • flamingo

      I laughed.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    fuck balls.

  • Athenian

Well that does not look good.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

    Umpire 3
    Yanks 0

    • Athenian

Dude! Don’t blame the umps. This team self destructs every inning they bat. You can’t expect the entire pitching staff to hold teams to one run just so they have a chance.

      • Robinson Tilapia

EVERY INNING. THEY NEVER SCORE A RUN. EVER.

        • Athenian

Um damn near. But thanks for running with my statement and blowing firmly out of context. Someday, I will learn English as well as you.

          • Robinson Tilapia

            1. Next time, you might consider trying to correct someone’s grammar when they’re actually trying to write in complete sentences, Mr. “‘Um damn near’ as a sentence.”

            2. “This team self destructs every inning they bat.” It’s pretty hard to take this out of context. It’s also grammatically incorrect but, really, who’s counting.

            3. Someday, you’ll actually show up on here when the team is winning.

            • Athenian

Guess you missed the posts during the oakland series. But I get selective memory, serves people well.

  • Hummingbird S.

it keeps on getting better.. they cant hit and they cant pitch!

  • flamingo

UGH THIS TERRIBLE TEAM. (Angels, obvs.)

  • Tom

    Umps 3, Angels 0, Yankees 0

  • Karl Krawfid

    Shit never fails man.

  • RBC

When I heard the crack of the bat, I knew that was gone.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Pujols must’ve seen Wally Matthews article on Pettitte v. Pujols.

  • Chris

Oof. That’s what they paid for.

  • jon

man jeter has NO range anymore

    kinda sad

    • eephus_pitch

      But GOLD GLOVES.

  • Need Pitching

amazing watching the difference in range between the two SS playing today

    • Robinson Tilapia

I really resent this. I mean, did you see Jeter in “The Other Guys?” I really doubt Aybar would possess such range.

      • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

        Should have shot Arod!

        • Need Pitching

          best movie line ever

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I really think if the field isn’t shrouded in fireworks smoke Jeter might make that play.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Another reason why Scoiscia’s a genius: He implements “The Hunger Games” while the Yankees are on the field.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Wheels falling off.

  • jon

wow umps really want the angles to win huh

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    wow…wtf?!?!?!

  • Need Pitching

    out

    fucking umpires

  • Hummingbird S.

Cano playing like a blind man, missed the tag

    • Need Pitching

      no, he didn’t

    • jon

other than the replay that shows 100% him being out yea totally dude

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

His tag clearly caught the trail foot, i don’t know what replay/play you saw.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Trollovision.

      • RBC

The tag has to beat the runner to the bag, no matter where the tag is made. The tag beat the runner in this case, but I see how the ump missed it – he was in a bad field position and didn’t see what we saw. Remember, the umps don’t have replay.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It’s still a bad call, and honestly I don’t get how you can say he was in a bad position, 1000s of umps get that same exact call right standing in the same spot.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

Girardi needs to throw a fit and get tossed

  • Karl Krawfid

Just missed the foot? Come the hell on. This is why you can’t watch most away broadcast. Dude was OUT.

  • Chris

The umps better even this up before the end of the game.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Call a damn strike!!

  • Mr. Pink

This Angels series really came at a bad time.

    • Widget

What would have been a good time?

      • Robinson Tilapia

        I’m free on Monday.

      • Need Pitching

before Trout was called up and Pujols started hitting?

    • RI$P FTW

Like before the pants came off?

  • Chris

I’m still trying to understand the Abbot trade.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      As in Jim?

Yanks in need of starters badly and, frankly, something to draw attendance. JT Snow blocked by Mattingly at first. No one knew Russ Springer would pitch for an eternity.

    • Rainbow connection

      One handed guy.

    • Chris

Snow was blocked but those were good players to give up. Abbot was a nice guy, but we needed a lot of things in those days. i think the team could have done better.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    J.T. Snow for trivia?

  • Manny’s BanWagon

Haren’s delivery reminds me a little of David Cones.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Wow…..Lorenz is just so BORING

    • Robinson Tilapia

Stick Meridith in the booth. See how she does. Or just get Kay’s fat ass out to the west coast.

    • RBC

Lorenz???? He’s not even there. Maybe you’re talking about John Flaherty??

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha, I must be. Who ever the not Singleton guy is, he’s dreadful.

        • RBC

Yup, you’re talking about John Flaherty. I don’t like him in the booth either.

    • eephus_pitch

      Try listening to Mark Gubicza.

    • RI$P FTW

He’s terrible on twitter. Laughably bad.

  • Athenian

Well good thing they swept Oakland. Will make a .500 road trip not so bad. Glimmer of hope ……splat!

    • Need Pitching

wow, not only is this game over by the fourth inning, but the next game is already over too

      why are you watching?

      • Robinson Tilapia

The real question, of course, is “Why are you never here during wins?”

        • Athenian

Hey dumbass, It is 6:25 am in Greece. My apologies for not being completely available for very game. Regardless of what your American tv reports, people do,have jobs here. Oh and then that thing called sleep.

      • Athenian

Have radio and and game day. So not watching anything.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Garbage time.

  • Hummingbird S.

    RISPhit!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Garbage time. All you have to do is avoid left field.

    • Hummingbird S.

avoid it at all costs.. now I know how other teams feel when Gardner is playing the field

  • flamingo

    Two hits in a row!

    • flamingo

And a run scored, I should add.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

Martin will be lucky to hit his weight this year.

  • mike_h

our record at Anaheim since 2009 is 6-11, we just don’t play well there

    • eephus_pitch

Why stop there? You can go back as far as 1995 and see their record. Sheer horrible, almost every year.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

It will be that way until Tim Salmon is deceased.

        He is the catalyst.

  • Mr. Pink

Looking at the Angels’ homegrown young players like Trout, Trumbo, Bourjos, Aybar, Kendrick and Weaver, it makes me kinda jealous of the kind of talent their farm system has turned out. Plus they have more prospects on the way…

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

look at our homegrown guys like Robertson, Gardner, Cano, Nova, Jeter, Phelps…

      • Mr. Pink

Um Nova and Phelps aren’t exactly guys you should be proud of. Nova had one okay season and has fifth starter stuff, Phelps has a meatball fastball and nothing else. Cano of course is a star. Jeter was like forever ago I’m taking about guys our farm has produced within the last five years. Gardner is a good but to great player and Robertson is a nice above average reliever. That’s nothing compared to the guys the Angels have churned out.

        • eephus_pitch

You’re really going to crow about Aybar and Bourjos?

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

and Kendrick? Who against everybody but the yankees is average at best.

            • eephus_pitch

Every one of these guys plays like an All-star against the Yanks, but that doesn’t mean they’re actually good.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Nova is at worst a 5th starter, and is probably a 3rd guy, Phelps is nothing but potential(good or bad, who knows) to say otherwise is silly, I guess guys that came up in the past don’t count as home grown then, Gardner is the best defensive left fielder in baseball according to many defensive metrics, and Robertson is probably the best non-closing reliever in all of baseball.

        • Need Pitching

lol … you use guys like Bourjos, Aybar, and Kendrick as examples for the Angels and then dismiss Gardner for only being a good player

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Maybe one day those guys will help the Angels not underachieve.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Bedtime. Hope for no insomnia and 4:00 comments tonight. Score more runs than the Angels, please.

  • eephus_pitch

Goddammit. Get his pitch count up.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Scioscia Face.

  • Karl Krawfid

This is so hard to watch. Now Jeter is coming back to sucktitude with the others.

  • Mr. Pink

Hmm. I can’t decide which team I hate to lose to more. Angels, Rays or Red Sox?

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Honestly, my hatred for the Red Sox has eroded in recent years…I still dislike them a lot but I dislike the Rays more at this point.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Had this exact conversation last week and couldn’t believe it.

I hats the Rays way more than the Sox.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I think my hatred of the redsox was directly tied to my hatred of Pedro, Schilling, and pitching to Manny/Papi. I just don’t hate current redsox like i hated them…

          • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

My hatred of red sox was linked to hatred of red sox fans. Once they had to eat sh!t they don’t do much talking any more.

      • FIPster Doofus

I feel the same way about the Red Sox, but I don’t hate the Rays at all. Can’t stand the Rangers or Angels.

  • Nathan

This offense needs to get back to Oakland, stat.

The more I watch A-Rod, the more and more he seems like he’s in decline. It’s painfully apparent that he isn’t an elite player anymore. I can’t remember the last time he’s come up with a clutch hit, let alone anything with any sort of power.

This just feels like a game where the Yankees are going to get NOTHING going, just a bunch of weak grounders. This plus the deflating loss last night reminds me why I hate watching games against the Angels.

    • eephus_pitch

You’re just now figuring out A-Rod was in decline? He’s a shell of his former self. Yeah, he’s still good, and some people will boast that he’s still a top 10 third baseman, but that’s not what they’re paying him to be. Top 10 third baseman doesn’t impress me.
Obviously, money isn’t going to make him an elite player anymore. I don’t think anything will. He is who he is.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’ve come to terms with Alex’s contract. There is nothing the Yankees can do about it, and I’m not and never was mad at him for it. I was/am mad at Hank for doing it.

        • eephus_pitch

It’s not like there’s some amazing third baseman out there that the Yanks could have, but there are times when this contract (and the remaining years) make you want to cry.

No, I’ve realized that he’s been in decline since ’09. The past few years of not being able to stay healthy maybe masked the decline by rationalizing “he isn’t playing as well due to the injuries”.

I think ’09 was his last hurrah as an impact player. I think he’s still a good player but elite/impact, those days appear to be gone. At this point, I’d be thrilled to get 30 HRs/100 RBIs but that might be a stretch the way the season is going.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

If Swisher ran into Cano I would’ve blown a gasket

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Trout is fast.

    Trout is powerful.

    Trout is talented.

    Trout talks to himself.

    Trout is insane.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Chavez is so good

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

They just Price is Right’d Teix. Bastards.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

He shouldn’t have chased that foul ball in the 1st inning.

  • Hummingbird S.

glad to see the team go out like a bunch of wimps..

    • 1stbase

Yea because dan haren sucks balls

      • LiterallyFigurative

        Donkey-balls actually

  • Chris

That was a whole bunch of nasty pitches.

  • flamingo

    Ugh.

  • aRX

    I fucking hate the Angels.

  • Pat D

God, I hate the fucking Angels.

  • FIPster Doofus

Isn’t Trumbo the same asshole who had a sub-.300 OBP last year? He’s Babe fucking Ruth now?

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He also hit 29 homers though.

      • FIPster Doofus

He did, but he was basically an average offensive player last season. Now he’s godlike this year. Frustrating.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

Could have had trumbo for robertson in the spring.

This team and their stupid bunts.

  • Chris

    This game is defiantly winnable.

    • Chris

      I mean definitely

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Anyone remember the last time Robbie got to first in time on a drag bunt? Granted he was really far away that time but half the time he barely tries. For as many thing he does well in the field covering first on a bunt is not one of them.

  • Athenian

Angels are just playing to well for the Yanks. When a team is hot they are hot, I guess.

    • Pat D

Does seem a bit like that tonight.

  • flamingo

    Is this a joke?

  • FIPster Doofus

    Oh, fuck off, Bourjos.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Swish should be 3-3 with two doubles.

  • Pat D

Did I mention I fucking hate the Angels?

  • Chris

That outfield has got it in for Swisher.

  • eephus_pitch

Yanks just cannot catch a break against this fucking team.

Its the damn stadium man. Fuck that place.

    • Hummingbird S.

either that or they are not the Oakland A’s or KC Royals and are actually a good team, a team that’s better than this shitty Yankees team

      • eephus_pitch

Yanks took two out of three from them earlier this year. With the same players.

  • Will The Thrill

Too many smiles on the faces of the Angels tonight.

  • The bronx bombers who like to bunt

    • Will The Thrill

Live and die by the homer for this team. It’s like they forgot how to hit singles and doubles…

        I wouldn’t say that. A-Rod is a singles machine.

      • Pat D

Except ARod, who hits nothing but singles, right?

pretty sure Kuroda didn’t give up any in his shutout on Sunday, but I may be misremembering.

      • DT

Shut outs means no one scoring. So yea he didn’t give one up.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

          /sarcasm?

I hate when we get shut down by no name bums like Dan Haren.

probably…i’m just antsy and want something positive to happen…

        • pat

          Fair enough.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow…same pitch three times, and Jones couldn’t hit it.

    • eephus_pitch

That was a Ruben Sierra-esque at-bat right there.

    • Manny’s BanWagon

He couldn’t reach those pitches with an oar.

  • Hummingbird S.

pathetic, always taking HR swings and ends up with the K… fucking awful

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He wasn’t exactly sent up there to bunt the runner over.

      • eephus_pitch

That doesn’t mean overswing at balls off the plate, though.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I think all three of those pitches were strikes, they where just in a location that Jones couldn’t hit.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

So, at 11:53 you were complaining that all they do is take weak hacks, then 20 minutes later you’re complaining that all they do is swing for the fences…I’m confused.

      • pat

One does not simply reason with the trolls.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I just don’t understand how someone contradicts themselves like that almost immediately.

      • Hummingbird S.

I know you’re joking, because you cant be that dumb. One thing is not the opposite of the other. What it all means is that this team does not have a good approach to hitting this year, and it shows.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

“another weak hack with men on” said by you at 11:53
“always taking HR swings” said by you at 12:11

and I’ve played and watched enough baseball to know that a weak hack and a homerun swing are never the same. They are in fact polar opposites.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Hit it where they ain’t swisher

          Yes I see

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

It’s a euphemism for hitting a home run.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

If swisher walks do they pinch hit nix?

  • Cy Pettitte

I’m so sick of this fucking outfield

  • aRX

    *sigh*

    ARGH.

  • FIPster Doofus

Swisher has gotten absolutely screwed in this series.

  • Karl Krawfid

    We suck.

    • DT

We always suck against the Angels.

      • aRX

We (almost) always suck against the Angels, in LA.

    • eephus_pitch

      What do you mean “we?”

  • DT

Fuck the Angels defense…every series against them feels like this shit.

  • Chris

Swish is an equal opportunity swinger. He flied out to LF, RF, CF.

  • Manny’s BanWagon

That damn outfield is like an Olympic relay team out there.

  • Athenian

That’s it…. Someone asked Mark Feinsand who was worse, the 2008 or 2012 Yankees. His response, still to early. Tat is not a good response.

    • pat

OH MAN A BEAT WRITER SAID THAT????????? WE R SUPER FUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Athenian

Yeah, normally I’d agree but Feinsand is pretty level headed.

        • Need Pitching

he said nothing at all judgemental in the quote
how is saying it’s too early to judge the season in any way noteworthy?
I bet he likely would have had the same response if he was asked if this was a playoff team or division winning team.

        • Pat D

Yea, Feinsand isn’t WallyMatt, who retweeted some nonsense a few minutes ago that was pretty much gloom-bagging.

    • DT

We still have over 100 games to play.

    • Pat D

Well the 2008 Yankees had 39 starts made by Darrell Rasner, Sidney Ponson, Dan Giese and Kei Igawa, so……yea, it’s still too early to say.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Jesus the starting rotation was bad…

        • Pat D

2008 was truly the year where everything that could go wrong went wrong.

And yet they still won 89 games.

      • FIPster Doofus

I took an irrational liking to Dan Giese that year.

        • Pat D

He really wasn’t terrible. It’s just that when a guy like him is starting, you know things are fucked up.

          • FIPster Doofus

True. Just looked at his ’08 numbers. Nice ERA (3.53) and FIP (3.73).

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I really thought I was the only one.

      • DT

Pavano finally made some starts now?

        • Pat D

He made 7 terrible starts that year, with a near 6 ERA and a 1.5 WHIP, yet he won 4 games.

          • DT

            Worth every penny!

    • Need Pitching

what other response would he possibly have given?
only trolls declare the season over with over 100 games remaining.
and beat writers can’t predict how the next 100+ games will go anymore than the trolls can.

  • aRX

Well, at least our bullpen will be nice and rested.

    • aRX

…the fuck did I say anything for.

    • Athenian

We’ll need them in Detroit who will suddenly become great after sucking against the Sox

      • Pat D

I’m already counting on that since the Yankees suck in Comerica.

  • Tom

At least Swish had a decent approach at the plate.

When runners get on base it seems like nearly every Yankee (except Jeter) is trying to pull a HR and swing out of their shoes.

Wish they would settle for just serving one the other way on a pitch outside instead of trying to blast everything and rolling over on outside pitches. With men on base pitchers tend to pound the outside corner, and the Yankees seem to make no adjustment.

  • Chris

Pettite pitched well, but I’d get him out of there and save his arm

  • eephus_pitch

Andy’s been better than we could have expected, but he can’t keep giving up homers at this rate.

  • Karl Krawfid

Another ground ball from the 40 year old and the Yankees can’t get it.

  • FIPster Doofus

Decent job by Pettitte. No support.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

To the offense’s credit though, Haren is probably a top 10 pitcher.

      • DT

And they played some amazing defense…

      • FIPster Doofus

Yep. He’s great. It didn’t help that their defense took away some hits.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

yeah off of my head their defense has saved 3 runs. Two from Swish’s maybe homerun that was caught by Trout, and one from Kendrick this past inning.

      • Hummingbird S.

They did hit Haren, but like it’s been all year, they can’t put the hits together and score runs with hits other than the HR.

  • DT

Well we got swept by the Angels in 2009 before the all star beak (and were a lot more games behind first place)…so it can’t be that bad right now…

  • Chris

Andy’s always given up homers. The Yankees had several chances to close this game up. Pettit’es line and Harren’s line are pretty close, so the result of this game is in the Yankee bats.

    • eephus_pitch

He’s never given up homers like this. I know it’s only 4 games, but 6 homers in 4 games is way too many.

  • FIPster Doofus

Chavez is so smooth at third.

  • Need Pitching

    where the fuck was Cano?

  • Karl Krawfid

Great defensive positioning. I Guess they think we’re the Rays.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Why does our defense always seem to be in a bad spot. For example, why is Cano holding Pujols on there? Especially with Kendrick at bat, who loves using that hole?

  • Mr. Pink

Cano for Bryce Harper. Would you do it?

    • FIPster Doofus

      Yes. Washington wouldn’t.

    • Hummingbird S.

why would the Nats do that?

    • Chris

      No.

    • Tom

In a heartbeat. But no way Washington does it.

I like Cano… but you are talking about 5 years of cheap production; and if/when he wants to get paid he will be in his absolute prime.

Cano is going to get serious money in his decline years on his next contract.

  • DT

I hate the Angels and their BABIP, Stupid goddamn defense and all that crap. I hope Texas kills them in their division.

  • eephus_pitch

“I thought Andy pitched a very good game. He was hurt by the two homeruns, obviously.”

Thanks, Sterling. Thank you for lowering the bar to the point where pitching to an ERA of 6 is your idea of a good game.

    • FIPster Doofus

He didn’t pitch a good game, but it wasn’t a total washout a la Hughes last night. He gave them seven and kept the team in it.

      • eephus_pitch

Well he didn’t give up four in the first, so that was nice.

  • Chris

Holding Puljois on 2nd is like holding a mack truck on 2nd. The big is not going anywhere, and that hole was huge.

  • Mr. Pink

    Fuck this old ass team…

  • eephus_pitch

Howie Kendrick’s Hall of Fame speech should be interesting.

  • DT

Goddamn the Angels are just downright annoying.

  • Hummingbird S.

    great move bringing in Nix

  • Chris

I always get depressed when I go to LA.

  • Tom

Can the Yankees stop playing every hitter like they are a pull hitter?

The Kendrick groundball was obviously bad, but why the hell is Jeter so far up the middle against “dead pull” Eric Aybar?

It seems like Girardi is compelled to shade either Cano (against righties) or Jeter (against lefties) up the middle.

  • Karl Krawfid

Yankee beat writers are so fucking annoying. Following these idiots on Twitter is making this game worse.

  • Purple Haze

This Yankee team is frustrating as hell. They are the most fucking inconsistent Yankee team I’ve seen…

  • eephus_pitch

Scioscia seems to whine and pull a face at EVERY pitch that goes against his pitchers.

    • FIPster Doofus

I’m tired of YES feeling compelled to show his stupid reactions after every ball the Angels throw.

      • eephus_pitch

The Angels broadcasters love when he does that. They agree, of course.

        • eephus_pitch

I’ve literally watched games where the Angels guys start in with the “where was THAT pitch” stuff after the first pitch.

      • Pat D

I think they are trying to remind people of how much of a flaming dicktard he is.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

This kid seems a little wild…can we please continue taking advantage of that?

  • Tom

Tying run up…. oh wait it’s not thanks to routine groundballs against shifted infields.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I still think that pitch to lefties is a ball…

    FUCK YOU MIKE TROUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

    Fuck Trout.

  • aRX

    Oh fuck you.

  • flamingo

    Nice AB from Jeter.

(I can’t believe I’m staying up to watch this train wreck. It’ll all be worth it if it turns itself around, though.)

    • flamingo

Never mind, this is completely ridiculous.

  • Purple Haze

    Fuck you Mike Trout.

  • DT

Fuck the Angels…Fuck this game. The team actually had some nice AB with RISP but nothing is dropping.

    • DT

Right when i say that, Cano goes down swinging at a pitch 2 feet out of the zone.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

A-Rod is overmatched by the bat boy.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Cano has to do this. pay back for all the bullshit this series.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Rispfail!

The night must end like this.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Cano is so going yard.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

again…that pitch is outside. I’m sorry I don’t care what an umpire says.

  • aRX

    Please please please…

  • Cy Pettitte

    great AB Robbie….

  • Purple Haze

Ernesto Frieri = Angels’ David Robertson

    • Karl Krawfid

Yankees are 1-34 with the bases loaded. EVERYONE Is D-Rob against the Yankees.

      • eephus_pitch

With the bases loaded the Yankees hit worse than a National League pitcher.

  • flamingo

    On three pitches.

    I hate this park.

  • Need Pitching

and Cano continues to leave small armies of men on base …

  • DT

Cano really is trying for a home run swing every time with RISP.

  • Karl Krawfid

Way to show some heart Cano.

    Fuck this team.

  • ArchStanton

    Cano is killing this team.

  • Hummingbird S.

yeah, that sums up this season so far.. great swings by Cano and another out with the bases loaded!

But at least they showed some fight, right??

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

what bullshit. Bad calls by umpires, awful strikezones, excellent defense by the opponents, horrible placement by out defense…just overall not a fun game.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Btw, I promise, with the way this strike zone was if Robbie didn’t swing at that 0-2 pitch it some how would’ve been called strike 3 anyway.

  • Purple Haze

I’m starting to believe that this RISP problem will never go away and will continue to haunt us as the season goes on.

    • DT

If Cano keeps swinging like that with RISP…it won’t.

  • eephus_pitch

As soon as the Yanks get the bases loaded you can just get up and go to the bathroom.
When will the inevitable correction come? It’s murder watching this.

  • dkidd

on a positive note, melky cabrera is now batting .373

    • Purple Haze

I don’t care what anyone says. I miss Melky. I’d take him over Swish any day.

      • Evan3457

That wasn’t really the choice at the time.

  • Purple Haze

Cano is really going out of his element this year. Hacking at really bad pitches, swinging and missing more, not doing shit with people on base. Something isn’t right with him. Maybe he is going Teixeira on us and trying to live up to what he and Boras hope is a huge contract…

  • eephus_pitch

It seems completely impossible that a team would be this bad with the bases loaded. When a pitcher is MOST on the ropes, this team as a whole can do nothing.

  • Tom

This AB summed the game up (1st and 3rd, 1 out, Yankees down 3. A Jones)

    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....8;s_type=3

5 sinkers, one of which was marginally in the strikezone. Jones was either ahead or neutral in the count and swung at 3 pitches.

To me this is the RISP issue… too many hitters playing hero ball. Rather than hit the ball where it is pitched or take a walk, they want to yank one as opposed to just keep moving the rally along. Pitchers know this and feed the Yankees a steady diet of pitches on the outside corner or offspeed stuff.

  • DT

The Angels defense robbed us of at least 4 runs this game.
The Arod single with RISP knocked down
the Tex single with RISP knocked down
Swisher had 3 hard hit balls in the gap that were caught, once with RISP
Grandy hits a bloop with risp..trout makes a diving catch

    frustrating…

  • Will The Thrill

Things I learned from this game.

-Yanks will continue to give up a minimum of two homeruns a game
    -Granderson strikes out a lot
-Cano is not an RBI Machine™
-Arod has turned into a singles hitter
-RISP Fail is a disease and Yanks have yet to find a cure
-My hate for the Angels surpasses my hate for the Rays/Red Sox
-Mark Trumbo has the most effortless power I’ve ever seen
-Mike Trout is good and the Yankees should learn from missing out on him and collect those draft picks son.

-Dan Haren is good and we probably should’ve traded for him

The Yanks “missed out” on Trout because the Angels grabbed him with the 25th pick in the 1st round while their 1st pitch was #29.

That 25th pick originally belonged to the Yanks, but they forfeited it to sign a free agent…

      …Mark Teixiera.

They Angels picked 24th, not 29th. Their scouting director said the only reason they took him 25th (with the Tex pick) instead of 24th (with their natural pick) was to keep his slot value down. Go through the DotF archives, I linked to the article a few weeks ago because the Yankees were going to draft him.
