Game 51: Return to Comerica
ByA 4-2 record on the West Coast was a pretty good start to this nine-game road trip that now takes the Yankees to Detroit. It’s their first trip to Comerica Park since A.J. Burnett put together an unexpectedly strong performance in Game Four of last fall’s ALDS, in what was ultimately his final act as a Yankee. The Tigers have been disappointing this year, so it would be nice for New York to finish this trip with a couple of wins and head home on a high note. Here’s the lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Mark Teixeira
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
RF Nick Swisher
DH Andruw Jones
LF Jayson Nix
C Chris Stewart
LHP CC Sabathia
Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.
Brett Gardner Update: Prior to the game, Joe Girardi said that Gardner’s workouts (he hit in the cage today) continue to go well and he could return to the team by next weekend or shortly thereafter. He still needs some minor league rehab games after missing nearly two full months.
David Robertson Update: Robertson was supposed to play catch today and throw a bullpen tomorrow, but it rained in Tampa. He could still throw off a mound tomorrow, but they’re likely to just push everything back a day according to Girardi.
Russell Martin/Laz Diaz Update: MLB Executive VP of Baseball Ops Joe Torre discussed the little spat between Martin and Diaz with both parties and decided not to impose any punishment. No fines, no suspensions, nothing.

If this was the NFL, Martin would have been suspended 90 games
Fuck that, the ump should be suspended.
“You have to earn the right.” PLEASE, grow up blue.
“No fines, no suspensions, nothing.”
I’m sure the league saw that as ‘giving Martin a break’, but in every just part of the universe it was cutting that shitbag Laz Diaz more slack than he deserves. What a silly man-child.
Agreed. Martin’s post-game comments were not smart, but Diaz’s comments were of the “ridiculous 8 year old girl” variety.
Another Laz Diaz gem I came across.
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play......d=21519317
Chris Stewart is not CC’s personal catcher – it’s just a remarkable coincidence he’s caught CC every game since Opening Day. I know what Girardi said, but do you think Stewart will start Game 1 of the playoffs?
at this point, i hope he does. if he catches him the entire season, why would you change it up for the first playoff game. it’s not like martin is piazza or posada with the bat
Of course he will, he sat out Posada for Molina in 2009 when they needed as much offense as possible because Burnett was pitching.
not a very good ab. sparse crowd there, it sounds like minor league game
so the umps will definately screw us all year long after those comments by Martin..
This delayed strike call is going to be annoying.
especially on a pitch that was a whole foot outside of the strikezone
So this guys Dad I reckon.
How long does he want to wait!? My word.
Wow, there really has been more media commentary on the umps lately. Sterling just said that it’s impossible to do play-by-play with Lane because he’s so slow.
Ridiculous zone already – one of the strikes to Jeter was ~4″ off the plate per pitch f/x and the strike to Granderson was well off the plate
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/......php?img1=..%2FpfxVB%2Fcache%2Ffastmap.php-pitchSel%3Dall%26game%3Dgid_2012_06_01_nyamlb_detmlb_1%26sp_type%3D2%26s_type%3D7.gif&img2=..%2FpfxVB%2Fcache%2Ffastmap.php-pitchSel%3Dall%26game%3Dgid_2012_06_01_nyamlb_detmlb_1%26sp_type%3D3%26s_type%3D7.gif
As long as Sabathia gets the same big zone, I don’t care. Just be consistent.
But a big zone allows a weaker pitcher to stay in the game longer.
Consistently wrong = wrong… never liked that philosophy.
Neither do I, but it’s the best we can get with umps these days.
As a former umpire (little league, but still), I’m cool with it. Every ump has a different zone, it’s hard to be perfect all the time. What bothers me is when the zone changes throughout the game, like one a veteran pitcher gets a call that a rookie doesn’t, etc. I’m cool with the zone as long as it’s the same for both parties.
Let’s just hope the zone is as big for CC..
what the hell is Alex waiting for? 2 hanging pitches and he just takes them.. pathetic.
he didn’t want to ruin the rispfail situation
So CC is gonna get that strikezone too…..right?
(In the back of my head I’m sensing Cabrera/Fielder getting benefits of the doubt)
it wont matter if he keeps pitching to the middle of the plate
He won’t to them. To that AAAA leadoff hitter sure
Wow. Talk about shallow Grandy.
Damn! Right on Stewart’s hand!!
Lame.
Attack CC’s fastball. Easy work.
Triple to a lefty. Single to the righty. Cabrera double play. Can’t predict baseball folks.
CC really has lost some weight. Doesn’t look as bad in the road grays as he used to.
Two of my least favorite road ballparks in one road trip, Comerica and Anaheim. Disgusting…
Hmm.
Umpire a dick again
This kid is gonna hit Cano
What would happen if martin is behind the plate and Diaz is the ump, martin calls for a high fastball and then lets it bean diaz. Could mlb or the crew do anything about it? As martin can claim he was crossed up on the sign.
I would love that.
I can hear the degenerates in the Detroit crowd way too clearly.
Ohhhhhhh look at Cano with a walk!
Make this guy throw strikes
Come on boys, make him pay.
I hate Lane. But not as much as John Sterling hates him. I am not listening on the radio, but I can hear him in my mind sniveling about how unfair it is to the play-by-play guy to call strikes like that.
Jones wont take a walk
Me thinks the Yanks would be wise to take a gap/singles approach this series. Trying to hit homers to win games ain’t gonna work here.
Basing an offense off power is more sustainable than a rally of singles. So….not seeing your point.
CUUUUUUUUURTIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have faith in Nix
To draw a walk
Not sure what is worse for Wei-Yin Chen: giving up five runs in the first to the Rays or being called Bruce Chen by your own announcers.
Definitely the latter.
Chris Stewart will get the clutch hit here. He has all season.
C’mon, Stewart!!!!!!
Stupid jones
time for Clutch Stewart
Fuuuuuuuuck.
Take the dammed walk stewie you moron
Stupid. 9th place hitter should take there. He had walked 3 in the inning.
WTF?
pitcher walks the bases loaded and the shittiest hitter on the team swings at the first pitch
This guy just walked the bases loaded, and you swing at the first pitch?
Chris Stewart is an equal opportunity run preventer. He does it offensively and defensively.
He can’t help but swing
And now Jeter just swings at the first pitch???
So the guy has walked 3 batters this inning and at least 3 guys have swung at the first pitch… I get being aggressive, but make this guy work.
cashman should be fired, what a joke
you should be fired.
Cashman would never swing at the first pitch.
Mario and Rod on FSD just put up a stat. Nyy is hitting .151 with bases loaded Detroit hitting .114. This is going to be a long series
Should’ve totally tried the squeeze with Stewart…
The guy behind home plate who is pretending to be the umpire is just slaying me.
I saw that too haha. Ridiculous.
That’s the famous guy who does that all the time, right? (Well, famous among baseball dweebs.)
I’ll take the walk!
Wow. Hooray.
I’ll take it! I don’t give a shit anymore, just score.
We’ll take it. If he’s going to give us those walks we’ll take em. Now don’t swing at the 1st pitch.
still no hits, but the walk is nice!
This umpire should DIAF.
holy fucking shit don’t be so mean Curtis
AND THERE’S THE DEATH BLOW!!!!! GRANDY!!!!!!!
hey, a hit!!! GRANDY!!
GRANDISH!!!!!!!!!!!!
RISP SUCCESS!!!! YEAAAH GRANDY!!!
BOOM!
GRANDERSLAM
Bases loaded production!!!!!!!!!!!
I love you Grandy!!!
wait, what just happened there, you can get a hit with the bases loaded?!?!?
He should cockslap the ump as he crosses home plate.
Grandy make him PAY,,,,,
WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Curtis is good isn’t he.
Lefties who hit lefties…so awesome.
GrandersOWNED
I can’t remember ever seeing a team score 5 runs on 1 hit
hahahahah
White Sox scored 4 on no hits v. Andy Hawkins.
during the dark ages of Yankee baseball …
Casey Crosby misses AAA.
There’s no excuse for it not to be game over. None.
That was glorious. Gotta feel good giving CC a four run lead.
CC please don’t make this interesting. Four runs is plenty to work with. Don’t pull what you did with Cincy and start giving up HRs and blowing the lead.
Quick question why doesnt grandy hit clean up? He is what arod used to be.
No.
I mean he’s not what A-Rod used to be. What A-Rod used to be = one of the best ever
As far as the arod we got not the guy in seattle and texas.
Were you around for the last eight years? The Yankees got that guy and then some.
Got back to the states in 2008 was busy from 2000-2008. Saw mostly post season baseball.
that would also apply to Yankee ARod in at least 2005 and 2007
Agreed that he is not what A-Rod used to be, but I am in favor of switching A-Rod and Grandy. If A-Rod goes on a power surge, you can switch them back, but right now A-Rod is hitting like a #2 hitter.
This is the 3rd time this year that we’ve murdered a lefty that we’ve never seen before. Maybe we can put that narrative to rest?
“Deep to right, and that ball is gone …………… foul”
- Kay
At least when Tex hit the ball off the end of the bat the other inning, Kay made a similar call and then goes “my bad” when he realized the left fielder was running in for it, not out.
Real nice play by CC there.
But…he’s a fat, lazy non-ace!
So…um…I thought tonight was an 8 o’clock start. Till I saw a friend’s Facebook status saying “a grandslam.” Somebody wanna give me a quick recap?
CC gave up a run early on a triple and a single, Yankees scored 5 run on 1 hit (four straight walks, then a Granderslam). Awesomeness.
…but LHP we’ve never seen before?!?!?!
I think that narrative needs to die. The Yanks rocked Will Smith in KC a week or so ago too.
Oh, one of the reasons I was actually happy for the 8′oclock start, I just watched the season 4 Finale of Dexter. My jaw is still being collected from the floor.
DUDE. So sad. I never cry, but that was gut wrenching. Poor Dex.
I’m rarely ever shocked by a TV show, it’s actually only happened twice. Once: the Series Finale of Lost, Twice: This.
Never watched Lost, but that finale of Deter was probably the most devastating ending I’ve seen in a TV show, for sure.
Not the same type of shock at all, more of just an “oh my god it’s actually over…there will never be another episode again.” I definitely think it’s worth a watch, even if season 6 is a little weird, it does make sense if you pay attention.
I would like to, unfortunately I’ll be a little short on time with the move and the new job. I’ve heard good things, just never got around to it.
Hahahahaha. LOSER!
The dude walked the bases loaded, walked in a run, and then Grandy hit a slam with two outs.
two out RISP non-fail?! I don’t believe it.
How come hockey goalies dont get concussions and they get hit with a frozen piece of rubber that goes over 100 mph?
Because they normally don’t take it off the mask, plus their masks>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>batting helmets.
So cathers should wear the goalie masks for protection.
Some have started to.
Still, the difference remains, the pitcher is literally aiming at/around the catchers face. Hockey pucks are attempted to be aimed around a goalie
Some of them do wear that style. But catchers get hit with foul balls more than goalies get hit with pucks with regards to the head. And a foul tip on a ball likely is well over 100 mph.
Perhaps now the Yankees can take a strike and make this guy work.
CC has thrown 10 more pitches than Crosby
How did this end up here?
Nice inning by CC there… though that last play on a cold night where it’s misting is scray as hell.
*scary
That was a Ramiro Pena-esque at bat by A-Rod.
Swisher is just weaker this year he doesnt use his hips anymore. The ball carried better last year.
That’s probably gone if it’s in Yankee Stadium.
I kind of knew that was gone off the bat, cause suzyn said “woah” as soon as Santiago made contact.
Thats enough of that shit CC.
CC needs a damn cutter for real.
its impossible to get by a start without allowing a HR
except you know, four days ago when Kuroda pitched an 8 inning shutout…but let’s not let that get in the way…
lets be a child and read everything with it’s literal meaning..
Ahhh yes, insults. Makes your point so much more salient.
Really now?
What? Calling someone a “child” for reading something literally on the internet, where there is no context of sarcasm, etc.? Also from a commenter who is borderline troll status? Give me a break. Keep it civil (I.E., without name calling) and your point is worth more.
Also from a guy who’s been saying this same line since the Kuroda game.
Childish comments deserve childish remarks.
I just went from midnight to six once I saw Bryan Mitchell’s line tonight.
Keep cool, CC.
CC giving back runs by HRs again…
CC will be fine, shhh.
Dude, he gave up a homer, he’s clearly not an ace.
Hopefully that solo jack will be a reminder to the offense not to give at bats away
Awful CC.
Who is this berry guy
Last name Berry, first name Dingle.
Right down the middle.
So, for that at bat, it was a full count, but according to Game Day not one of those pitches was out of the strikezone, or even close.
Bohica
Oh so it’s going to be one of those games where the Yankee starter can’t hold any sort of lead. Come on CC, you are an ace, stop this stupid crap.
CC doing his best Ivan Nova impression.
Why can’t he put away these shitty hitters?
cause he’s too focused on getting Miggy and Prince.
ughhhhh
Sweet start CC!
Stupid pitching man.
What happened to CC’s changeup? In 2009 it was dominating hitters.
cc sucks
I’ve had enough. Fuck you CC.
What the fucking hell???????
CC bout to shit the bed. WTF?
Unreal how we just give it back.
Can’t depend on any Yankee starter. Fucking horrible.
Andy Pettitte ring a bell?
Did you watch his last start?
so you’re expecting a starter to pitch great every start?
you’re going to be waiting an awful long time for that
sooooo … CC pitching like shit today
CC Sabathia is sucking big time.
Pettitte is the only guy in the rotation i trust.
CC = complete crap tonight.
Base hit prob pushes the ERA over 4
CC’s change up has no depth. Fastball is flat. One pitch pitcher. You would think someone on the Yanks would help him correct the shit.
CC looks like shit, no command at all
Uh, oh…
CC makes too much to pitch like this.
Pitches don’t dominate every single game, you know that right? CC is still an elite pitcher, and other than (maybe) Mussina, has been the best free agent pitching signing in Yankee history.
Grandslam???
what a waste tonight, not only does cc blow after given a big lead, but the bullpen is going to have to work hard.
This inning has been a nightmare. It’s unreal how CC hasn’t been able to get three outs with his stuff.
The lead was fun while it lasted. Nothing says ace like walking a back up catcher.
Strike this fucker out!
yay
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I see I came in at the perfect time. I’ll have a CC melt, please. Hold the cheese!
There is nothing worse than in-game manager interviews. Nothing.
Half time football coach interviews are worse.
Those are bad, but I have to miss part of the game to hear the baseball ones.
CC- nice “ace” like performance.
Easy now, the Yanks have a two-run lead, and the Tigers’ pitcher sucks. No need to jump off any bridges yet.
I think people aren’t really worried about this game, but rather that this is CC’s fourth straight mediocre start.
http://www.baseball-reference......#038;year=
I only see one “mediocre” start there.
I’m on CC’s Baseball Reference because that just didn’t sound right…
May 10 VS Tampa: 8IP 2R(0ER) 1BB 10K
May 15 @ Baltimore: 6IP 4ER 4BB 6K
May 20 VS Cincinnati: 7IP 3ER 5BB 6K
May 26 @ Oakland: 7IP 2ER 2BB 4K
What’s the point of watching if you can’t complain regardless of game situation?
heh
Uh oh . . . Buchholz pitching a good game thus far . . . Those scumbags may truly be turning it around!
Me thinks not. They had a stretch like this last year. It’s just an illusion. All of their starters have high walk and left on base rates. That’s not a recipe for success. Plus I don’t expect Doubront and Bard to last as starters all season. As bad as our pitching seems, theirs is worse.
I don’t know. Doubrant has been pretty damn good. All I’m saying is that the Red Sox are indeed a top team, no matter what their record shows. But, I hope you are right. I hope they amount to absolutely nothing because, so long as the Yankees suck, it’s nice to know that the Sox suck more.
Yanks doing this kid a huge favor by not working the count deeper. He’s all over the place.
Johnny Mize, Alex Rodriguez, Andruw Jones. unless its guys coming immediately off a 50 homer season, but Cecil wasn’t when he joined the Yanks
Wow Jayson Nix.
NIX
You have failed me for the last time, Blockbuster.
It’s really amazing how much Flaharty sympathizes with backup catchers.
Yay Stewie!
What the fuck are Kay and Flaharty doing. I don’t care about boy bands.
The most Chris Stewart hit ever.
I believe the Chili Peppers are staying at the team hotel tonight.
i think we are good on hits with risp for the series. or maybe this is finally regression?
Yeh.
That at bat Chris Stewart is a better at bat than any of Martin’s at bats this year.
#justsaying
if only Russell Martin could also hit weak ground balls … oh, wait.
Yeah, at least when Stewart beats the ball into the ground it gets through for a hit!!!!!
That would be called BABIP.
No, it’s called skill. And Stewart is a very very skilled hitter.
He’s got the intangibles.
You can’t be serious right? I actually laughed out loud a “Stewart is a very very skilled hitter.”
http://www.baseball-reference......ch01.shtml
Really?
might need to check your sarcasm meter
I’m not familiar with Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan here. I’ve seen his name before, but not often enough to know if that was serious.
Considering that there is a solid faction of people here calling for Stewart as the every day catcher, it is hard to pick up on sarcasm unless it’s really outlandish.
I may be wrong.
I’m just assuming somebody saying ” Stewart is a very very skilled hitter” can’t be serious.
I hope you’re right. However, I can’t be sure of that, unfortunately.
Damaso brother
Yankees need to treat this guy as a starter and work counts and drive pitch counts.
CC is at 71 pitches through 3 innings and he may have just 2-3 innings which means 3-4 innings out of the pen. Not sure 6 runs wins this game.
X+1
If you think CC has two innings left, he’ll throw three. If you think he has three left, he’ll throw four. Never fails.
I think CC has 12 innings left.
He’ll throw 13.
what happened to al abuquerque? is he hurt?
Maybe Mike Francesca was right– he doesn’t exist…
Yup. Elbow trouble, supposed to be back around the all-star break.
There is no such guy
Yeah I think he blew out his elbow actually. Not sure if he had surgery.
No surgery from what I can tell, just rest and rehab.
This says surgery
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_.....gery-elbow
My bad, I just went with my fantasy baseball updates on him. Didn’t realize it happened in the offseason. For the record, this is what I was going off:
Aluburquerque (elbow) is expected to begin the mound progression portion of his rehab soon, Mlive.com reports.
Recommendation: Barring setbacks, the right-handed reliever remains on schedule to return to action around the All-Star break.
(Rotowire.com)
December seems so long ago I forgot about it.
And BABIP finally helps us!
Another nice play by CC! Nice!
Thanks for the free out!
yeah I thought there were guys on
big fella movin’
CC SUCKS!!!!!!!!!! Send him down!!! Fire Cashman!!!!!!!!
Don’t look now but Johan’s got a no-no through 6 for the Mets…
Berry doing his best to win The Most Pesky Player of The Game…
CC needed that inning – should be able to go at least 6 now.
I know Berry isn’t a big time hitter, but after a double and triple that was a gift to make an out on the first pitch like that.
YEAH!!!! TEIX!!!!!
normal Tex shift and that would’ve been an out
why wouldn’t every team do the “normal” tex shift. it just seems stupid not to do it.
I agree
I think the Miguel Cabrera trade has to be the most one sided trade is baseball history. Marlins got a whole bunch of busts and Tigers got a potential Hall of Famer.
Kontos for Stewart will displace that in a few years.
The cash and the suit didn’t put up great numbers in the trades for Ruth and Cy Young (respectively), if I remember correctly.
Until they mentioned it, I had forgotten that Leland won a WS with the Marlins.
What are they talking about with Martin and the ump?? The ump said he wouldn’t let Martin throw balls back to the pitcher?? Wut?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/8.....669812732/
I agree with the ump. Until Martin’s hitting over .200 he should not be allowed to throw the ball to the pitcher.
Wut? ….WAT?
Dude. You have to be living under a rock if you haven’t heard about that. It’s even on RAB!!! Just go back a couple of threads ago.
Oh Cano. I miss you so. I think it’s time Cano takes a trip to the back third of the order. Murderer’s Row + Cano had the man hitting 9th and he was spectacular. Something’s off. Something must be done. Something.
Smoltz with the base loaded grand slam comment. Well done.
Frustrating watching quality hitters rolling over and hitting lazy groundball or flyballs on offspeed stuff (especially on the outside corner) in hitters counts.
Seems like they make up their mind to swing at it so long as it’s a strike no matter what type of pitch it is.
nice play … on both ends
Guise, civil authorities have issued a tornado warning.
Johan’s through seven! Pitch count is over 105 though.
So…do the Mets leave Johan in if he has to throw ~140 pitches?
Yeah, do it. Skip his next start.
I doubt it will happen. They already had someone getting up in the Mets bullpen during the 7th.
They just let him hit, so I assume he’ll go out for the 8th.
Yes, I think the only chance he makes it all the way to the 9th is if he has a very, very quick 8th and is under 115 pitches.
I really hope the yanks dont give up the farm for garza. if they give up sanchez, bichete, mason or austin ill be pissed. we need to have the excitement of home grown players.
Gerald Laird is a fat, ugly POS. Can’t believe he is related to Brandon.
Brandon is pretty ugly too ya know.
fucking shitty umpires strike again
Wow out by a MILE! Where are my Robot Umps??!
That wasn’t even close!
Bob Davidson is so terrible
On MLB Network Costas is defending umps due to bang/bang plays.
That was no bang/bang play.
Balking Bob!
He should have been called out for two reasons:
- He was clearly out
- He’s an idiot for diving (false hustle)
How did that clown miss that call. Totally changes the inning.
Thats a terrible call by the ump. THe good thing is it keeps the human eliment in the game. Much rather have that than the correct call.
ROBBIE
SWEET!!!!
GODinson Cano
Holy shit Robbie.
I thought he was a poor defensive player?
So with MLB seemingly opting to add the extra WC over expanded replay, that almost guarantees that an umpire will have a big blown call in the one game playoff, right?
Was just talking about this with a friend. If that happens, I hope the ensuing controversy is big enough to ruin Selig’s stupid “legacy”.
I thought Cano ranged over to 2nd base to get that but then the replayed showed he simply took a couple of steps to his right.
#norange
Ironically that call may have saved a run (bear with me… and yes there’s the whole fallacy thing)
runner on 2nd one out. Nix flyball out #2. With no DP opportunity with 2 out is Cano playing that close to the bag? (would that have been a single?)
Thhe bang/bang plays can go either way and I understand – it is the blatant misses like tis Laird call and the one Leyland freaked out about in Boston (the “foul tip” that was clearly no foul tip) that are so maddening – Laird looked out to the naked eye so what did ump see?
The only valid reason I’ve ever heard for diving into 1st (other than avoiding a tag) is that it makes it harder on the 1st base ump who is so used to calling 1st base based on the sound of the ball hitting the 1st baseman’s glove vs the sound of the runner’s foot on the bag.
I think the umps get so used to relying mainly on sound to make the call that they can botch the call when there is no foot hitting the base.
That’s a good point. Umps do rely on the sound a lot to determine the call, so I can definitely see that strategy.
I still hate the dive to first, but that does make sense.
Oh definitely… it’s still a dumb play when you consider the injury risk, but I remember some fast baserunner saying it makes it tougher to call the bang bang plays and thinking, “yeah that makes sense”.
Of course that play wasn’t all that close.
Can we score tack-on runs or is that just a fantasy?
I hope Girardi pulls CC next inning if he struggles – we have an off-day Monday and we had one yesterday.
Maybe I missed it, but has Teix batted third before this game?
I know he batted third the last game in Oakland. He probably will against lefties going forward.
6th time this year
seems like they might be having him bat third vs. LHP now
Boy Prince Fielder’s contract is going to look really bad in a couple of years.
Pujols will be worse. Longer contract and older player. People thought A-rod was bad…it might have been more money, but at least they got some MVP years.
not in the new contract
They got 1 MVP year, and several MVP caliber years…so yeah, point stands.
I’m not ready to say the Angels aren’t going to get ANY MVP-caliber years from Pujols in this contract, yet.
Oh I know. I’m just saying, Pujols has been trending downward in a couple areas before the contract, and now he’s on a ten year deal. At least A-Rod have several monster years. Maybe Pujols can as well, but there is more concern at the beginning of his deal than there was at the beginning of A-Rod’s deal.
the MVP year wasn’t in his new contract. The only year in the new contract where he was remotely worth the contract was 2008. He’s definitely been a net positive for his entire tenure (so far – may not be saying that in 5 years)with the Yankees, but the new contract has been (and will continue to be) a disaster.
If that’s your opinion, fine. I feel Pujols will be a worse contract. A-Rod was elite in 2008 and 2009. He’s also still pretty damn good, just with less power.
Johan’s through eight!
122 pitches through 8 ip. This is getting a bit scary here for Terry Collins et al.
Beltran helping out his buddy
Let’s say Pettitte had a no hitter through 8, but was at 120+ pitches. You think Girardi lets him stay in? I’d have to say yes. A no hitter is the only thing he’s missing.
Andy didnt miss 2 yrs with shoulder reconstruction. When he blows his arm out again in a month, I hope the no hitter was worth it.
Remember Girardi said he was going to pull CC when he had a no-hitter in the eighth inning early in 2010, I think, in Tampa Bay – I think he would be careful with Andy and not let him go past 125 at max.
watching al tonight is sad. he looks horrific
Looks bad against fast and slow stuff.
Wait a minute, the ump missed the call so it shouldn’t be a no-no
Armango. Gallaraga.
Wow what a brutal decision for Collins.
I guess you leave it up to the pitcher?
If he previously had a no hitter (or the anyone in Mets history), I think you have to pull him given his shoulder history, but in this situation….
(We all know what the binder would do, and it wouldn’t necessarily be the wrong move)
i want johan to get the no hitter, but i don’t think he will
Eppley in the 8th after a day off in a 6-3 game?
He gets Cabrera and that’s it.
Can’t Wade do that?
He’s leading off the inning. If he hits a homer, its 6-4 only
It would be just to face Cabrera. Joe will give the loogy to Prince
Then why not just let CC have that one batter?
I think A-Rod needs to be sat down.
And damn Cano has a pretty swing but he takes some ugly hacks. Makes me appreticate Bonds’ pitch recognition.
A-Rod a $30M embarassment. 5 more years of this guy. Yikes!
A-Rod’s 2012 season:
.283 .370 .424
Not $30 mil, for sure, but (1. The season IS NOT OVER YET and (2. Those numbers are not that bad for a third basemen.
That line is in dire need of more cowbell.
+ The entire internet
seriously, that joke will never be not funny
Dude watch the games. He’s singles hitter who can’t get around on a good FB, he bats 3-4th and has only 19 RBI in 47-48 games played. He’s an old 36. He’s not getting better.
“Dude”, I’ve watched every game. I never said he’d get better, but stop pretending he’s some sort of disaster. If A-Rod can keep the OBP up, that’s all I care about.
I agree he shouldn’t be hitting 3rd or 4th, but he’s an ideal 2nd hitter. A-Rod is still a good player, even without power.
Yankees taking pitches right down the middle and hacking at shit in the dirt/up high again.
Holliday hits a blooper into center but it holds up enough. 1 away
Santana taking his AB in the 8th. Stay tuned.
BIG RUN!
Matsui with 2 HRs in 3 Games. I like. And I miss.
Jayson Nix quietly playing well as the Yankees bench/utility guy.
ANother soft hit fly ball that holds up enough. Two away
One more out Johan!
I haven’t really been able to pay attention to the game tonight…just caught like 3-5th innings…how’s it gone?
Johan got it!!!
Happy that Johan got it, sad that the Mets got it.
wow, he got it. didn’t think that would happen
Welcome to the club New York Mets
I…I…never thought I’d be so thrilled about a Mets win.
some dude just ran out on the field toward santana, lokks like he was tackled promptly
I hate the Mets but I like Johan so nice job Johan. Enjoy it because that your shoulder is going to file a restraining order.
Yea, Mets should enjoy it while they can. When his arm falls off in one of his next 4 or 5 starts, they will be taking all kinds of heat from the fans that wanted him left in to finish it off. 134 pitches for a guy on his 11th start after shoulder surgery seems to me to be a recipe for disaster.
Dude… Seriously..?? Don’t you get that there have been no no-hitters in Mets HISTORY.?? Not in recent years, not in decades, EVER! I dont care if he would have thrown 200 pitches or if he cant throw in 5 starts… No Mets fan that isn’t insane can ever question Collins’ decision… I’m a die hard yankee fan, but I truly respect Johan and what he just did was an incredible piece of history.
Congratulations Johan. Great job.
Question. Does this make Johan’s contract worth it?
For Mets fans, probably
My thoughts as well. If your a Mets fan, things like this are all you can realistically root for.
Should of traded Hughes and IPK for him. Fire Cash!!!
Hughes and Joba would’ve been worth it. IPK is needed for Grandy.
I’ve never had anything against the Mets, and two of my closest friends are Met fans, one born in 87 the other in 89 so their best seasons ended in disappointment. I’m happy for them.
What’s up with the “Soul Glo” music in the background?
JJYank: Its Cookie Time!
Don’t you worry, I’ve got ‘em ready.
Should’ve left CC in to see if he could have an easy inning. I think we all knew Eppley vs. Miguel Cabrera was going to end in either a hit or walk.
YES! Time for some Boone-tang!
A minor thing that Girardi does that drives me crazy… He will only put the defensive substitution prior to the beginning of the inning.
If he was going to put Wise in for Nix, why not have him pinch run for him once he walked?
He did this a ton last year with Swisher, who would get on base late in the game and for some reason Girardi would wait until the end of the inning to put Dickerson in (instead of just having him pinch run for him).
It’s a minor thing… but why wait until the end of the inning before making the change?
Hmm..it is minor cause I’ve never really thought about it…but that is an excellent point. It seems silly because he usually does it with outfielders and usually the better defensive outfielder is faster.
Orioles lose again. They are crashing and burning pretty bad.
I don’t think the Orioles even expected the Orioles to keep on winning. They have a nice team and some interesting pieces for the future but they’re a long way from being a contender in the AL East. It was a nice run and they proved to everyone that they’re not a doormat anymore.
Yep, I think most of us thought they would. Not surprising.
Like I said in the thread last night
Ledge Jumping Yankee fans: “guys, the orioles are for real, they’re going to be around all season…”
Orioles: “Lol, it’s Memorial Day Weekend. Fuck.”
“The Orioles are out-developing us and it shows”
“Guys, the Os are for real. They’re not going anywhere. We’ll be lucky to not finish last.”
“The Yankees are an 82-80 team. Good enough for 4th place. Maybe 5th if the Os stay around.”
The only 3 people on the Orioles I’d take are Weiters, Jones, and their SS prospect…I can’t remember his name.
I’d take Dylan Bundy in a heartbeat.
The Yankees would mess him up somehow.

I hate Delmon Young
Seriously. The guy used to be an auto out now he’s impossible to get out even with his free swinging ways…
Why can’t we have a stress/drama free win?
We just swept the A’s. Those were pretty much drama free
Stop being so logical. Haha!
OMG Greg with the Logic and positive comments!!! The End is near!!!
jk man
I love it.
im surprised that the phillies are still in it and only a few games out. halladay’s out and has not been good, lee hasn’t even won a game, worley is out and their offense is god awful. i really want to see them do bad
Don’t worry, they’ll be bad. Losing Halladay will have its toll soon enough, all they had was pitching.
Too many homers! is back
I hope it’s back to stay.
Hooray!! Kay’s starting the Too Many Homers!! I knew it was only a matter of time.
Heyyyy, look at you watching TV instead of the radio. Someone get the night off?
Ha, no. We close at nine, and most of my friends are religious Jews so they do religious things on Friday night…I missed most of the game though because I was busy at work right up until 9, had some book keeping problems I had to work out till 920 or so, and just got in shortly ago.
Well at least you caught some of it! I’m not a Kay fan, but Kay >>>> Sterling.
Didn’t they beat Felix, Price, Verlander, Shields by hitting homers? All pitchers they have a good chance of seeing in the playoffs.
Err…maybe not Felix haha.
…but what happens when they face good pitching in the playoffs
http://25.media.tumblr.com/ava.....d0_128.png
Well we get this one…tomoro looks good…hughes/verlander on Sunday? We score 4 but it won’t matter..Detroit 10 to 4 with fielder and Cabrera hitting 3 homers. Only question is who hits 2. Hughes is a nice guy…but nice guys finish last.
finally Granderson stealing a base
How long till the MSM and the Yankees realize what a lot of us realized a couple weeks ago…Alex should be the number 2 hitter.
pft hahahaha….wow. my timing couldn’t have been any worse.
Baltimore fade has begun..toronto next..then the rays and the genius with the Halloween glasses. Yanks and red sux and a long summer of booby valentine. Oh god
not bad for a singles hitter
lol Arod must be listening to Kay
Waaa waaa waaa A-Rod’s a singles hitters. Stop complaining bitches.
Thanks Kay!
wow, nice al, did not think that was going out
Looked good off the bat, i thought it was going to bang off the wall though.
Wow… thought that had no chance…
Garbage time… and silences Kay…
Okay, but where is the power?
They should talk about A-Rod’s lack of power more often.
Kay goes and bitches about ARod and BOOM! He hits a HR.
looks like ARod heard Kay and Flash complaining about the lack of power
A-rod is powerless, hits home run anyway.
Finally 20 rbis.
But…I thought A-Rod was garbage?
Also funny: ARod hit 2 HRs the day after this article was published.
http://espn.go.com/new-york/ml.....rd-baseman
I might have to stop complaining about the media constantly trashing him.
Please, for the love of Mo, keep trashing A-Rod!!! His stat line depends on it.
Phelps?
Rapada? (if he’s still alive… when was the last time he pitched?)
Garcia?
Rapada time!
Can we maybe not have so many pitching changes in a 9-4 game?
Seems like as good a time as any to continue to challenge Rapada to earn his spot on the roster.
Yeah, I guess that makes sense. But on that line, you could also bring in Freddy who hasn’t pitched since god knows when.
I really shouldn’t be complaining in a 9-4 lead though!
Yikes… 2 useless specialists eating up roster space.
Barring a double play, Soriano might be pitching tonight
When was last time Rapada pitched?
last time Rapada pitched was May 22. I assumed he was dead.
So I’m sure Athenian, The Troll, Stuart A, and Hummingbird just had previous engagements tonight and they haven’t been commenting strictly because we’ve been winning since the second inning.
Im right here watching, just playing PS3 and cant type a lot.. And Ive commented since the second inning. Dont worry about me man, Im fine.
gotta respect a man’s ps3 time. I don’t get much of it anymore.
Pssshh. 360′s where it’s at.
What’re ya playing man?
Likely nothing very good since it’s the PS3.
Ha fair enough. I’m a 360 guy, we have better titles for sure. PS3 does have the better hardware though.
They do but they gotta actually take advantage of it. There’s MGS4 and that’s it.
Pretty much, yeah. And I love the MGS series, but they need more exclusives for sure.
Uncharted? God of War? MLB the show? come on man.
Forza, Gears of War, Halo, Perfect Dark, Saints Row? I can go on.
uncharted<3
I still argue that the opening scene to Uncharted 2 is one of the greatest opening scenes in videogame history.
hey man, assassin’s creed, skyrim, journey, bio shock, mass effect…all excellent games.
All also on the 360 though!
But yeah, all awesome.
MLB The Show. Your arguments are invalid
Definitely a good game. The odds aren’t in your favor though!
True, but I don’t like sports games in general. I’m more of a shooter/RPG guy. I’m all about Ghost Recon right now.
I’ve honestly grown to hate shooters…the last one I played that seemed at all original was Borderlands.
Borderlands was awesome, loved that game. But to me, shooters are the perfect unwind sort of game. Also good for online gaming. RPGs are my perfect “do nothing all day but play xbox” sort of game, but shooters mix it up well for me.
and hold up Journey released on 360?
No, I actually don’t know that game, my bad. Still though, PS3 is lacking on exclusives.
IGN gave it a 9, which is impressive
http://www.ign.com/games/journey/ps3-867592
Agreed. In fact I’m playing the ME series from scratch. Thing is none of those games are exclusive to the PS3 so in a likely case the game isn’t going to be good..
That;s harsh, I love my PS3
FIFA 12, since Im brazilian
I’ve been commenting tonight for a while now . . . But thanks for playing the douche game.
Nice Rapada, nice.
I’m still confused by Kay’s logic…the yankees offense needs to be more dynamic and score in more ways but the homerun, but the yankees problem offensively is Alex isn’t hitting enough homeruns.
fucking dingle Berry.
I said the same thing above somewhere, before you graced us with your presence.
Fuck Rapada!
Damn man would this ump call a fucking strike?
Way to be useless, Clay
i guess arods dinger wasnt garbage tim after all
This is what happens when you let a guy rot. He can’t be effective.
Rapada doing his part to make sure Soriano picks up enough saves to consider opting out.
It is this situation exactly that makes me miss D-Rob.
Wow. Are we really here? And with Cabrera & Fielder?
It’s salami time!
FUCK YEAH MFIKY!!!!!!!!!!
Thank God Soriano!
AND STILL NO 1-2-3 INNING
Hahaha. That’s the best part of it all in my opinion.
thanks for making it quick and easy, MFIKY
He didn’t have to get 3 outs. Still looking for that 1-2-3 inning
i am starting to hate soriano less and less
It’s (awesomely) bizarre to see him being a key piece of the team. It’s also nice to see him being a closer where he’s most comfortable.
Wow… that was much easier on the blood pressure. Thank you Sori. (was fearing the Prince Fielder tying run situation)
Soriiii! guess he loves being a closer
See, a 1-.-. inning for Soriano. He can do it!
YEAH!!! Aqesome win!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soriano can’t perform unless he starts an inning.
Where is “send {A-rod}{Jeter}{CC}{Tex} down! Fire Cashman!!! Burn Girardi at the stake!!!!”?
Banned.
Duh Innings? Haven’t seen him.
I can assure you the trolls were not hanging out with me either.
It’s starts like these, when CC clearly doesn’t have his best stuff, but pulls through, where I appreciate him the most. We are very lucky to have him. This is, for reals, for a “true ace” does.
Great win tonight.
