The Yankees pounded rookie left-hander Casey Crosby in his first big league start last night, and they’re actually going to face a younger pitcher tonight. Right-hander Rick Porcello is making his 100th career start today and is more than three months younger than Crosby. That’s what happens when you jump from High-A to the show at age 20. The Yankees have won two straight and five of their last seven, so let’s see if they turn what is already a good road trip into a great road trip. Here’s the lineup…

With the complete understanding that he is only 23, I must say the Porcello has been a disappointment so far. Hardly his fault, was completely rushed by the Tigers. Good example why you shouldn’t rush pitchers, only threw 125 innings before being brought up.
Its a shame, was a favorite of mine and was hoping the Yanks would take him when he started falling in the draft. Really hope he turns it around, time is definitely on his side.
Let’s hope that Kuroda can get on a little roll here.
The back 3 of the rotation in Hughes, Nova and Kuroda have a combined 0.8 WAR a third of the way into the season which is pretty horrific.

Didn’t know the game was in a delay when I got into my car and turned on the radio, so I switched to WFAN. Jeez, all these people calling in as if yesterday’s game was a World Series clincher.

I don’t want to rain on their parade, but don’t these people know no-hitters are largely meaningless? Unless you’re talking about a Verlander, Unit or Nolan Ryan, the difference between a no-hitter and 1 or 2 hitter is almost all luck. Umps are part of that luck, so I have no issue with the blown call. Until we have robot umps, all no hitters go in the same category to me, and its one I don’t take all that seriously.
I don’t want to take anything away from Santana but I think Freese gave him a bit on the 3-0 pitch.
I read a book a few years back that had multiple accounts from good sources saying the final strike in Don Larsen’s perfect game was about a foot off the plate. I mean, come on. They’re all tainted in some way. Umps are part of the game, and they blow calls all the time whether its balls and strikes or Jeffery Mayer. Nobody’s taking back 1996, nor should they.
Yep, a 134 pitch, 5 walk game with 8K’s isnt all the dominate. No where does it scream, man that guy was nasty. It screams baip bad luck. I’m happy for him, and the Mets, and I also think the same hoopla would accompany a CC no hitter and Mets fans would be making fun of Yankee fans.

Martin has not been all that great on balls in the dirt this year.
They don’t have a lot to live for but I was a rabid Yankee fan in the 80s so I admire those who live by the team and die by the team. They don’t seem to be bandwagon jumpers when the team is only doing well like some people in a city north of here seem to be.

I admit it. no one thought trading a 25 yr old Melky for Javy Vazquez had any downside.
Cashman can not fail, he can only be failed.
Melky was released and free to sign with any team. If the Yankees would have re-signed him, would have have changed the way we evaluate the trade? No, because it’s a completely separate event.
That, and even the Arodys Vizcaino side of the deal hasn’t worked out at all (so far) from the Braves perspective. The most productive piece in that deal so far has been Boone Logan, so you could argue the Yanks did OK.
It is now “The Boone Logan Trade”.
Melky had been trending downward for a couple of years before the trade. Javy was coming off of a Cy Young caliber season, and had been a virtual lock for 200 IP and 200 Ks per season.
Melky literally screamed 4th outfielder. Remember the Melky + IPK for player X jokes? It’s because Melky was so “meh” that everyone wanted to trade him. If fact, Melky so unbelievably terrible with the Braves after the trade, he was released. Stop pretending like you’re not talking in 20/20 hindsight.
Just would have had to live throw a couple years of the worst player in baseball to get that. That would have been fun.

I’m not pissed about the missed opportunities because they have all come with 2 outs which means the odds are against us scoring.
Melky always had 4th OF written all over him as a Yankee, but one thing always nagged at me about him. He was called up at such a young age, and guys like that tend to be big producers. Its a self selecting group comprised mostly of A-Rod, Griffey and Bryce Harper types, but getting to the MLB leven and sticking at such a young age says something about a player, and the longer you stay the more things you pick up. He’s in great shape, has been for the past two years, and is putting up numbers no one ever thought he would. Good for him. With that being said I don’t see the Yanks pursuing him this offseason.

We also should have bought low on Cliff Lee when he was sent to the minors and Roy Halladay the season he had a 10+ ERA. Also, we should have taken a chance on Josh Hamilton when he was basically out of baseball!

Yes. They did very well the last two years, and Cano was good. For his career, though, I believe Cano has a lifetime BA of .260 with RISP. It needs to be correcting upwards!

He’s made a couple of those plays look real slick this year, I’ve noticed it too. Also no second baseman makes the ball to the third base side and throw across the body play better than Cano either.
I think because he has a pretty long stride, the amount of ground he covers is sometimes deceptive.
You get a midget like the guy in Boston and he has to make about 5-8 more strides on a play like that and it looks like he’s moving faster or covering more ground.

i’d like to see analysis of pitchers’ time taken between pitches. i may be imagining it but it seems like the guys who consistently get run support are quick catch and throw guys.

I think one of the reasons the Yankee hitting is so poor with men on base is they are overly aggressive in hitter counts with men on base. It’s one thing if the guy is around the plate but this guy is only throwing fastballs and is all over the place.
Grandy has a .900 OPS with RISP this year and got a pich right down the middle. Meanwhile Cano on the other hand has a terrible plate approach with RISP .495 OPS(!!!) and an avg at around .100, He swung a ball clearly was too inside.

Tex is wildly inconsistent especially given his $23m/yr contract. I love Swisher but he normally stinks when it counts especially in the playoffs. This team needs fixing but given their bad contracts there really is nowhere to go. Next year the only open position is Swishers and the best availavle will be Hamilton and Melky.

Bob Davidson is the worst umpire in the game and MLB should do something about it. Forgetting that he has lost his patience and can’t tolerate any criticism he just flat out can’t umpire any more. The call at first last night when Jeter threw out the runner that dove into first was wrong by three feet. Granderson’s two ball strike calls tonight were awful. Late in the game I think he just got tired and lost concentration. Jeter’s 3 0 pitch was a foot high and he called it a strike. He missed a terrible ball strike call on Ibanez’s last at bat. He doesn’t wait long enough on ball strike calls, calls too quickly and often is just flat wrong. He’s too old and has lost the ability to officiate at this level. These games are too important to worry about his feelings, he needs to be replaced and it can’t come too quickly.
Can you imagine the Mets have a better record than the Yankees, impossible.
