Game 52: Another Youngster

By

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

The Yankees pounded rookie left-hander Casey Crosby in his first big league start last night, and they’re actually going to face a younger pitcher tonight. Right-hander Rick Porcello is making his 100th career start today and is more than three months younger than Crosby. That’s what happens when you jump from High-A to the show at age 20. The Yankees have won two straight and five of their last seven, so let’s see if they turn what is already a good road trip into a great road trip. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
DH Eric Chavez
C Russell Martin

RHP Hiroki Kuroda

Tonight’s game starts at 7:15pm ET and can be seen on FOX. Enjoy.

  • DERP

I know the game is on Fox. Is it also on YES?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

No just FOX. I wrote YES out of habit. My bad.

      • DERP

yea, I wish this game was on YES.

  • Robinson Tilapia

It would help us all tremendously if Kuroda could help us know if we’re getting Good or Bad Kuroda on any given start by rocking an evil goatee on Bad Kuroda nights.

Kuroda clean shaven tonight? Porcello on mound? Another Yankee victory.

    • Bubba

      Good one.

  • Tom

Rays just lost; the Yankees can move to 0.5 games of first, and even with BAL and TB in the loss column, with a win tonight.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

As of now, everybody’s tied in the loss column.

  • Gone Phishin’

Anyone else getting technical difficulties with Fox?

    • jjyank

If be “technical difficulties”, you mean my ears are bleeding, then yes.

      • Gone Phishin’

Damn, I’ve got DircTv and my Fox service is out and since it’s a national game, Extra Innings doesn’t have it

        • jjyank

That’s a bummer man. I’m in market and have Comcast, everything is fine here.

          • Gone Phishin’

Really frustrating, been waiting around all day for the game andFox was fine all day…this sucks

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Porcello. I’m not going to tempt fate and say what’s “supposed” to happen.

We all know what’s “supposed” to happen.

I will, however, predict at least 3 hits for Russell Martin. It feels like it’s that time.

Who’s coming with me? Who’s coming with me?

    • jjyank

      *follows Cuso*

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        Yes! I’ll grab the goldfish.

  • Danny

With the complete understanding that he is only 23, I must say the Porcello has been a disappointment so far. Hardly his fault, was completely rushed by the Tigers. Good example why you shouldn’t rush pitchers, only threw 125 innings before being brought up.

Its a shame, was a favorite of mine and was hoping the Yanks would take him when he started falling in the draft. Really hope he turns it around, time is definitely on his side.

  • Manny’s BanWagon

Let’s hope that Kuroda can get on a little roll here.

The back 3 of the rotation in Hughes, Nova and Kuroda have a combined 0.8 WAR a third of the way into the season which is pretty horrific.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Whoever took the under on the amount of time before McCarver got phlegm and lost track of reality just won $100

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Uh oh. Balkin Bob.

  • Tom

That 2-0 pitch to Granderson was off the plate… looks like another night of a homeplate ump calling outside pitches to lefty hitters 4-6″ off the plate.

  • jjyank

Darth Vader thew out the first pitch?? WTF?

    • Kevin G.

      Star Wars day

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

They’re picking up where Larry Lucchino left off.

      • jjyank

Ha I laughed. I know it was “Star Wars” day, but that seems like a reach to me.

        • Robinson Tilapia

They could have had Biggs Darklighter throw out the first pitch. That would have been a reach.

          • Havok9120

I would’ve loved that just because everyone in the stadium would’ve gone “WHO?”

  • mike_h

5 years ago, ARod would have ran home, come on Tex bring em in!!!

  • Danny

Video of DBJ’s homer from the other night

    http://www.milb.com/multimedia.....d=21928681

  • jjyank

Is it me, or are the Fox cameras really bouncy? Kind of annoying.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

These Cubs uniforms are … interesting.

    • Will The Thrill

      You misspelled hideous.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        +800

    • Andrew 518

I’m a firm believer that once you abandon a city you lose the privlidge of wearing a “throwback” from those days…still bothered by seeing Dodgers wearing Brooklyn jerseys last season.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Meh. It’s all a novelty anyway. Not much to get worked up over.

      • Pat D

I’m sure some old Dodgers fan in Brooklyn died when seeing that.

  • Will The Thrill

I’m really hoping this gets rained out. I’m not feeling this matchup at all…

  • C

Rain delay and we don’t even get the YES smooth jazz rain delay music. What a rip.

  • Robinson Tilapia

I’m sorry, but could they have looked at a damn weather map before deciding to start this game? Rain delay in the first inning? Really?

The Cubs seem to be wearing pajamas. Whatever works, I guess.

Whoever the “in the studio” guy is on Fox, he looks like something Sean Hannity crapped out his ass.

    • Greg

Remember last year when game 1 was started and then canceled. Apparently when we play the Tigers. MLB forgets to check any weather maps.

      • Robinson Tilapia

No harm, no foul here, apparently, as it was short enough, but how hard would it have been to just delay the start of the game by…..50 minutes?

        • jjyank

          Fire Cashman!

  • Pat D

I guess it’s really sad to be a Mets fan.

Didn’t know the game was in a delay when I got into my car and turned on the radio, so I switched to WFAN. Jeez, all these people calling in as if yesterday’s game was a World Series clincher.

I was almost in tears due to laughing so hard.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

You would think Johan Santana just gave birth to their first born child.

I don’t want to rain on their parade, but don’t these people know no-hitters are largely meaningless? Unless you’re talking about a Verlander, Unit or Nolan Ryan, the difference between a no-hitter and 1 or 2 hitter is almost all luck. Umps are part of that luck, so I have no issue with the blown call. Until we have robot umps, all no hitters go in the same category to me, and its one I don’t take all that seriously.

      • OMG! Bagels!

I don’t want to take anything away from Santana but I think Freese gave him a bit on the 3-0 pitch.

        • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

I read a book a few years back that had multiple accounts from good sources saying the final strike in Don Larsen’s perfect game was about a foot off the plate. I mean, come on. They’re all tainted in some way. Umps are part of the game, and they blow calls all the time whether its balls and strikes or Jeffery Mayer. Nobody’s taking back 1996, nor should they.

      • Fin

Yep, a 134 pitch, 5 walk game with 8K’s isnt all the dominate. No where does it scream, man that guy was nasty. It screams baip bad luck. I’m happy for him, and the Mets, and I also think the same hoopla would accompany a CC no hitter and Mets fans would be making fun of Yankee fans.

        • vicki

yep. his whip was actually lower in the the 96p cg shutout (against the pads, but still), 4h/0bb vs. 0h/5bb. five walks isn’t embarrassing (what’s up, AJ) but it’s a bit undignified.

        • Tom

Martin has not been all that great on balls in the dirt this year.

    • OMG! Bagels!

They don’t have a lot to live for but I was a rabid Yankee fan in the 80s so I admire those who live by the team and die by the team. They don’t seem to be bandwagon jumpers when the team is only doing well like some people in a city north of here seem to be.

      • Steve (different one)

        mets attendance per game:
        2009: 38,941
        2010: 31,602
        2011: 29,044
        2012: 26,659

        All fanbases have bandwagoners…

  • jjyank

Really didn’t think rain would be so much of a problem…guess I’ll watch another episode of The League. Anyone watch that show? Pure gold.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Nick job, Hirok.

  • DERP

    Promote Gary Sanchez right now.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

      What did he do tonight?

  • Dino Velvet

Sure could use Melky and his .376 average and .977 OPS

    • jjyank

      Yay hindsight!

      • CUYanks

We could have had Jose Bautista a couple of years ago for literally nothing!

      • Dino Velvet

        you got me.

I admit it. no one thought trading a 25 yr old Melky for Javy Vazquez had any downside.

Cashman can not fail, he can only be failed.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Melky was released and free to sign with any team. If the Yankees would have re-signed him, would have have changed the way we evaluate the trade? No, because it’s a completely separate event.

          • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

That, and even the Arodys Vizcaino side of the deal hasn’t worked out at all (so far) from the Braves perspective. The most productive piece in that deal so far has been Boone Logan, so you could argue the Yanks did OK.

            • jjyank

It is now “The Boone Logan Trade”.

        • jjyank

Melky had been trending downward for a couple of years before the trade. Javy was coming off of a Cy Young caliber season, and had been a virtual lock for 200 IP and 200 Ks per season.

Melky literally screamed 4th outfielder. Remember the Melky + IPK for player X jokes? It’s because Melky was so “meh” that everyone wanted to trade him. If fact, Melky so unbelievably terrible with the Braves after the trade, he was released. Stop pretending like you’re not talking in 20/20 hindsight.

    • Fin

Just would have had to live throw a couple years of the worst player in baseball to get that. That would have been fun.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        Yep. The IPK argument.

    • Greg

I’m not pissed about the missed opportunities because they have all come with 2 outs which means the odds are against us scoring.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

Melky always had 4th OF written all over him as a Yankee, but one thing always nagged at me about him. He was called up at such a young age, and guys like that tend to be big producers. Its a self selecting group comprised mostly of A-Rod, Griffey and Bryce Harper types, but getting to the MLB leven and sticking at such a young age says something about a player, and the longer you stay the more things you pick up. He’s in great shape, has been for the past two years, and is putting up numbers no one ever thought he would. Good for him. With that being said I don’t see the Yanks pursuing him this offseason.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

So could every team in baseball. Thanks for the insight.

      • CUYanks

We also should have bought low on Cliff Lee when he was sent to the minors and Roy Halladay the season he had a 10+ ERA. Also, we should have taken a chance on Josh Hamilton when he was basically out of baseball!

  • jjyank

    Yeahhh Chavy!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Damn. He could still do it.

  • pat

    Raul for GG!

  • StanfordBen

Stuck listening to radio again, and I decided to try Sterling just so I can complain about it :).

    • jjyank

As annoying as Sterling can be, he’s way better than many other team’s announcers.

  • pat

Wow Arod is 125 HR away from the all time record. That’s soooo many dingers.

    • Pat D

      Not gonna happen.

      • pat

Yeah, it seems very unlikely. Wish he would go back on the roids.

        • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

..or back with Kate Hudson. That seemed to work.

      • CUYanks

Seems unlikely, but would probably take a Frank Thomas-esque kick at the end to get there.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

He’s taking his walks and not worrying about the HRs, which will come. Or not. Either way he’s banging Cameron Diaz.

      • Dino Velvet

they broke up over a year ago.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Granderson is ruining the post I was going to write about him not stealing bases anymore.

    • CUYanks

He just broke a tie with Miguel Cabrera and Joey Votto! (Though they do have better percentages)

  • Greg

    He was out

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

Blown call by the ump. If we win this game it doesn’t count.

  • jjyank

Grandy was out, but I’ll take it.

  • Greg

Again, they haven’t had the golden opportunity yet. Porcello is doing a good job with location

  • RetroRob

It’s sad, but I no longer expect Cano to get hits with RISP, even more so than other Yankees. Hopefully this will correct.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

..or maybe this is the correction. Didn’t the Yanks lead all of baseball last year with the bases loaded and/or RISP?

      • RetroRob

Yes. They did very well the last two years, and Cano was good. For his career, though, I believe Cano has a lifetime BA of .260 with RISP. It needs to be correcting upwards!

  • Greg

Martin has not been good defensively this year.

    • vicki

maybe not as a backstop, but his cs% has been raped by lazy swipes at second.

  • jjyank

    Thank you Robbie.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Nice grab, Robbie.

  • Tom

Not sure if there is anyone better on that type of popup

    • jjyank

He’s made a couple of those plays look real slick this year, I’ve noticed it too. Also no second baseman makes the ball to the third base side and throw across the body play better than Cano either.

      • Tom

I think because he has a pretty long stride, the amount of ground he covers is sometimes deceptive.

You get a midget like the guy in Boston and he has to make about 5-8 more strides on a play like that and it looks like he’s moving faster or covering more ground.

        • jjyank

True, which might also explain why Robbie makes plays look smooth instead of gritty dives.

  • Kevin G.

You have got to be fucking kidding me. Fuck you Don Kelly, you piece of shit.

  • jjyank

    Fuck you Don Kelly!!

  • Kramerica Industries

I’m listening to Sterling since Fox and MLB are a bunch of assholes about these Fox Saturday games…

    Son of a bitch.

    • Kramerica Industries

Should point out I’ve got Game 2 LA/NJ on instead.

I place more credence on a Final game than a baseball game on 6/2. Normally, I can do both. Not tonight.

      • Greg

Kings are going to win that series. If they win tonight, the sweep is a major possibility.

    • RetroRob

I’d do that too if the radio audio was in synch with the TV video. I could even tolerate John Sterling’s “it’s high and deep” calls since I could determine for myself if they were HRs off the bat.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Miggy got all of that one. Holy crap.

  • RetroRob

I don’t know why Granderson didn’t make an over-the-wall catch on that ball like Kelly did to Tex.

    • jjyank

      Lazy!

  • Greg

    An Absolute Bomb

  • Fin

Wow he hit the shit outa that ball. That sounded like a bomb went off when he hit it.

    • Tom

I like the Yankees chances still, but Davidson has been dreadful behind the plate and Porcello has been feasting on that pitch 4-6″ off the 3rd base side of the plate. He’s got at least 9 calls off the plate on that side so far.

      http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....8;s_type=7

      • Tom

ughhh…. not meant as a reply.

        • Need Pitching

lol … you seem to be doing that a lot lately.
I think your RAB is broken.

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Steve Sciacco

Miggy kills the Yanks. Seems to do OK against everyone else, too.

  • DERP

    Better hitter: Cabrera or Votto?

    • Greg

      Cabrera

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Miggy.

    • jjyank

Miggy. I’d like to say Votto, since he’s on my fantasy team, but that would be a lie.

  • Kramerica Industries

How did R.A. Dickey turn out to be such a good pitcher?

2.69 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, but this goes back ever since the Mets signed him. He’s been fantastic.

    • RetroRob

      Easy answer: NL.

Most likely answer: He’s a knuckleballer, so he certainly wouldn’t be the first to master it in his 30s.

  • Athenian

I swear Kuroda gets he worst run support.

    • Greg

As has been noted before. He had the same trouble in Los Angeles. That’s why he has only one MLB season over .500

    • Need Pitching

      5th worst in AL

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He ranks 116th out of 120 qualified starters in run support. Yanks have scored two or fewer runs in six of his ten starts, not counting tonight.

    • vicki

i’d like to see analysis of pitchers’ time taken between pitches. i may be imagining it but it seems like the guys who consistently get run support are quick catch and throw guys.

      • jjyank

I can’t imagine any correlation there. What does that have to do with run support?

        • vicki

rhythm. it’s draining, demoralizing even, to stand behind a guy waiting for something to happen.

pitchf/x has time stamp; maybe i’ll look into it.

          • jjyank

I feel like that might have something to do with defense, but run support? Ehh….

            • vicki

only a theory. but i don’t think run support is random. they’re people, not just the sum of their stat pages.

  • Karl Krawfid

Why come Granderson didn’t jump to try and rob Miguel?

    • Greg

      Are you serious?

      • Karl Krawfid

No. But I’m sure if that was a Yankee that hit that ball in Anahiem Bourjous or Trout would have caught it.

  • Greg

This is basically the swing game because the pitching matchup tomorrow is a major mismatch.

5-4 road trip staring us in the face, which is still okay considering that old adage.

    • RetroRob

The Yankees will win one of these two.

      • Greg

It’d better be this one then. Verlander-Hughes does not sound promising at all

        • jjyank

It doesn’t, but the Yankees have hit Verlander before.

          • RetroRob

Hughes has also pitched well in Comerica, perhaps because it’s more forgiving to flyball pitchers, or perhaps because of meaningless small sample size. I’m hoping for the former.

    • CUYanks

This game is far from over, and after all we did win a game with a Nova vs Verlander matchup earlier this year, even.

  • jjyank

    Wow nice move Kuroda!

  • jjyank

Ballsy base running, I love it.

  • Greg

    Here is the golden opportunity

  • Kramerica Industries

    Go-Go Yankees.

That was brilliant. And totally unexpected.

  • Kevin G.

    Angels baseball!

  • RetroRob

Let’s all think positive RISP thoughts.

    • RetroRob

      We failed.

      • Greg

Not exactly. The golden opportunity leads to a run.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Swish is yuck.

  • Tom

“Working his way back from Tommy John surgery” (Johan Santana)

McCarver… just awful… time to hang it up buddy. The guy misspeaks and makes more shit up than pretty much anyone going today.

    • jjyank

Ha yeah I had to a fact check real quick…Not TJS, but nice try guys.

      • CUYanks

He also called Cabrera “Rodriguez” on the throw, if I heard correctly.

  • Karl Krawfid

Why is Curtis Playing that shallow for Miguel?

  • DERP

    Good play IMO!

  • Need Pitching

    thanks Miggy

  • vicki

    the ol’ fake passed ball.

  • Athenian

Yanks have to pull this out. Verlander pitched shitty in his last start, won’t happen back to back.

This offense is on one game, absent for the next 2-3. What will they do when they face better teams. C’mon!

    • jjyank

I find it funny that when CC has a less-than-stellar start it’s “ZOMG He’s not an ace! What a fat fuck!”. And when Verlander does it, it’s “well that won’t happen again”.

      • Kevin G.

        Grass is greener

      • Athenian

That is a true response from Yankee fans about CC. Completely unfair.

        • jjyank

          Unfair how?

  • RetroRob

Let’s go. It would be nice to score some runs (as in more than one) with Kuroda pitches.

  • Athenian

Good thing Arod didn’t throw out Young, probably would have assaulted him. #monsterjackass

  • DERP

    Nice job by Phil Cock!

  • RetroRob

You know Jeter’s going to bunt here.

    • jjyank

I do, and it makes me sad inside.

  • Fin

At least we got Jeter and Granderson comming up with men on. Hopefully, Jeter doesnt fucking bunt.

  • American Wang

FYI, depuala made his debute for the dsl team. 6k in 3ip gave up 1er.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

First pitch GIDP is imminent. Bunt.

    • Greg

Wow. The man who hates all bunts says to bunt. I think if Coke stayed in, he would hit. But now Benoit, so he will bunt

      • FIPster Doofus

I normally hate bunts, but I wouldn’t in this spot. The specter of a GIDP looms extremely large.

      • Tom

        Different situation…

        -late in game
        - 2 men on.
        - Right hander on the mound.
        - poor conditions and so-so 3rd baseman

    • RetroRob

Uh, oh. If you’re calling for a bunt….!

      • Need Pitching

Jeter career .372 OPS vs. Benoit

        Bunt

  • vicki

people listening to sterling: did he say “aaand coke deals.”

    • RetroRob

I’m waiting for some player to come up named Meth. Now pitching, Phil Meth.

    • TomH

How else might he say it? It’s like trying to avoid hundreds of years of the standard meanings of “gay” because someone will snicker. The guy’s name is “Coke” and “deals” is a standard announcer’s verb.

      • vicki

i find his ingenuousness funny. is that okay?

  • Pat D

Only 14 days left after tonight. I’m not sure I can handle this anymore.

Let me just ask all of you people a few things. If you need tech support for your cell phone, no matter who your provider is, keep the following things in mind:
    1) Don’t call from your cell phone. If you have no other phone, don’t bother calling until you do.
    2) Don’t expect to get a new phone without doing some kind of troubleshooting. We have to do it.
    3) If your smartphone is freezing, it’s because of what’s on your phone. It’s not the phone’s fault. Stop using all your storage space on Facebook.
    4) If you get someone who can’t seem to speak English…well, tough. Everybody has outsourced now, you’re going to deal with this. If you’d rather not call, figure out how to use your carrier’s website.

    Rant over.

    • jjyank

I just go straight to my carrier’s store when I have a problem. I hate trying to solve things over the phone. I have Verizon and I just go right to the Verizon store and talk to real people. Works for me.

Anyway, keep your head up man. Take a nice vacation for yourself after it’s over.

      • Pat D

Yea, you don’t want to go to the store if you have T-Mobile. I hear from way too many customers that they go to the store for help and they get told to call us and are basically shooed out of the store.

When I worked for an indirect agent Cingular store, I’d never do that to a customer.

  • Karl Krawfid

When was the last time Jeter did something extra clutch?

    • Need Pitching

      does a successful bunt count?

  • FIPster Doofus

    Good call, good execution.

  • Greg

They could walk Granderson to load the bases

  • Ivan

Great bunt Jeter….(rolls eyes in disgust)

  • DERP

Blow your load all over this guy Grandy.

  • RetroRob

A base hit here would be cool.

  • Cy Pettitte

    go Joe!

  • Kevin G.

    Joe mad

  • DERP

Well, we win. Thanks Joe. Way to take one for the team.

  • Kramerica Industries

    WTF just happened with Joe?

    Epic!!

  • RetroRob

    What the hell?

  • Greg

    Whoa!

  • jjyank

What what happened? Girardi is PISSED.

  • Mike Nitabach

What the hell is Joe going ballistic about?

  • Karl Krawfid

    Damn Joe G got pissed.

  • Karl Krawfid

Joe G was mad that Jeter bunted.

  • Kramerica Industries

Meanwhile, Granderson strikes out on three pitches.

    RISP FTW.

    • Greg

The first pitch is the key to that at bat

  • Widget

I missed it but I assume Long was tossed because of the terrible strikezone?

  • Karl Krawfid

A-Rod needs to get his foot down because of that stupid ass leg kick.

  • Greg

That first pitch is why Grandy swung at the last pitch

    • Widget

Yep and there was an at bat earlier with Tex where the same thing happened. This ump blows.

  • Athenian

Fuck. Up to Arod. He will fail.

    • jjyank

Watching Yankee games must really suck for you.

      • The Troll

By my tally, that’s about the 247th you’ve typed those words.

        • jjyank

You keep a tally of things I say? Sad.

      • Athenian

Just have radio and game day, so ya the failure is worse.

      • Athenian

        And that is why….predictable Arod.

He needs to be batting second where he can’t do as much damage.

        • jjyank

I do agree that he should bat second.

  • Widget

You know A-Rod is going to do something unclutch cause he’s not a true yankee.

  • Mike Nitabach

He was keeping it down in the Os series.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

What the hell is going on?

  • Brandon

The ump earned himself another suspension this year. He clearly went over to the Yankee dugout. Almost provoking it. Arent you not allowed to go to the teams dugout unless you have reason? This no arguing balls and strikes shit has gotten to be rediculous. Especially when that strike 1 to Granderson might have just been the worst call of all time.

    • Bunt Gardner

Pretty sure he was near the dug out because of the attempt to catch Granderson’s pop foul.

  • Ivan

    Cmon A-Rod….

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Aod getting fastball

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Had the balls to throw a splitter. Wow.

  • DERP

    Great idea to bunt!

    • Need Pitching

yep, double play would have been better

  • Greg

Amazing how a bad strike call can turn a game. The umpire destroyed that inning.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Fucking figures.

Benoit coming in in the 7th and bailing out the Tigers is way too reminiscent of something we all remember too vividly.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Frustrating, but completely predictable.

  • Karl Krawfid

Fucking horrible. Take the damn walk.

  • Mike Nitabach

These umps are self-aggrandizing fuckwits. No one gives a shit about them, and they create little dramas like this to make themselves feel more important and at the center of the action.

And BTW, I fucking hate Joe Buck.

  • Ivan

just an awful inning there, and it had the potential to b a good one but it all went down hill once Jeter inexcusably sac bunted.

    • Need Pitching

      you prefer double plays?
Jeter is a career .172 hitter against Benoit.
Bunt was the correct move, Granderson and ARod just didn’t do the job.

    • Bunt Gardner

      Inexcusably??

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yeah really, even I was okay with that bunt. Jeter against a RHP and he’s been beating the ball into the ground all night? A double play is the best case. That means you avoided the triple play.

  • DERP

    We’re winning this game.

  • Midland TX

Maybe the reason Girardi shoved two fingers in Davidson’s face was to say, “This is the second time!” in reference to screwing up Teix’s at-bat as well.

  • Athenian

That is why the bunt was stupid. Joe should have been kicked out of the organization. He is just a horrible in game manager.

    • Midland TX

      Time to take your meds.

    • Need Pitching

explain please? the bunt is stupid because the Yankees didn’t hit with RISP? How would a Jeter GIDP help that?

    • Mike Nitabach

      FIRE GIRARDI NOW!

    • Adam

Pretty successful for a guy who is a horrible in game manager.

    • Bunt Gardner

Name one good “in game manager” that doesn’t call for a bunt.

  • Kevin

Horrible inning but the umpire made it so Granderson had to pretty much swing at anything.
A-Rod..he is what he is at this point.

  • DERP

Why the hell doesn’t Duane Below just pronounce his last name the way the word ‘below’ is normally pronounced.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Obviously this is conjecture:

On the foul pop, I think Davidson took the mask off and stared Long down. He probably heard chirping on the strike one call and gave Long a chance to mouth off. You could see Long say “what are you looking at?” And then Balkin Bob tossed him.

Entirely provoked by Bob by taking his mask off and staring KLong down.

    • Brandon

Yep. Davidson provoked it, ejected Long and Girardi went wild. Davidson earned himself another suspension with that one.

    • Mike Nitabach

Umpires should accept that they are not part of the action, are not supposed to be part of the action, and when they make themselves part of the action like this, they are being dumshitte assholes.

  • Ivan

Lets go guys, time to get the damn lead!

  • Tom

Balkin Bob… truly one of the worst umps going – not just the balk calls, but he might be one of he worst behind home plate.

The plate in Detroit has apparently been shifted ~6″ toward 3rd base:

    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....8;s_type=7

There’s been at least 10 pitches well off the plate called strikes (and I’m not including the 5-6 just out of the zone which are typically called strrkes)

  • jjyank

Wait when did Valverde dye his hair/facial hair blonde? Wow, can you look more like a tool? Really, you can? Bravo, Jose.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Dotel vs. three LHB. If they can’t tie the game here, they never will.

    • Mike Nitabach

      DO IT!!!!!!!!

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Can MLB just put all the Bob Davidsons and Joe Wests in one or two crews and only have them work series between bad teams? At least then their awfulness will have minimal damage.

  • Mike Nitabach

I was actually thinking that the blonde goatee looked decent. But I’m an idiot.

    • jjyank

      Yup.

      No offense.

      • Mike Nitabach

        Fucker.

    • vicki

business end of a 70′s porn star.

  • Tom

Dotel has thrown 1 strike this inning out of the first 9 pitches.

  • Mike Nitabach

Could Joe Buck sound any more disappointed when Yankee pops go foul instead of out? Fuck that asshole.

    • Tom

Well at least he didn’t label it a “bad break” like he did the popup last inning that went into the stands. (or maybe it was ME-Carver?)

  • Karl Krawfid

    Birthday Blast inc.

  • Mike Nitabach

    C’mon, Raul!

  • Kramerica Industries

That “no wins without a home run” note is extremely annoying, especially now that we are into June.

That just one-dimensional baseball at its worst.

    • RBC

I agree. Even with Gardner in the lineup, it seems as if we’d still have problems advancing runners. That’s a ridiculous stat with this lineup.

    • Need Pitching

so if Granderson hit a 3-run double instead of a grandslam and ARod didn’t homer in the ninth yesterday, and the Yankees then won 6-4 instead of 9-4, you would feel better about the team?

      • RBC

        About time.

  • Widget

come on guys Dotel sucks. This is just sad.

  • Mike Nitabach

    SCORE A FUCKING RUN NOW!

    • Athenian

I’m with you. It won’t happen. Be prepared to see blonde goatee do his antics.

      • Athenian

Good to be wrong, for now.

  • Athenian

Winnable games lost. Wonder how many there have been for the Yanks?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Every game is winnable.

      • jjyank

This. I don’t get it, the Yankees just tied the game, so it clearly was winnable, even though this was posted before that. Have faith! Enjoy the game and hope for the best.

      • Athenian

Technically yes. But wasn’t the point.

    • RBC

I’m still waiting for him to do something in the playoffs.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Swisher!

  • Tom

A true clutch hitter would have homered on that…

    :-)

  • Karl Krawfid

    Tony Pena for manager!

    • RBC

I can’t wait for him to get that call. He really deserves the chance.

  • FIPster Doofus

Really, McCarver? Detroit can’t afford to use Valverde because it’s a tie game? Mainstream baseball analysts are such morons.

    • Widget

McCarver is a special kind of moron though.

      • FIPster Doofus

        He sure is.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

We have entered the Twilight zone

  • Scheister of Doom

    Trout would’ve caught that.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Nick Swisher just makes stuff happen.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Jeez.

When did the Yankees become such a running team?

    • RBC

LOL… You wonder! I’ve seen more bases stolen tonight than the entire season.

  • DERP

    so sexy

  • jjyank

    Wow Swish!! Huge play(s).

  • Mike Nitabach

Joe Buck is making me sick with his overt lack of enthusiasm when the Yanks do anything good. What a fucking asshole.

    • RBC

Remember, the national broadcasts have to play to the middle America crowd. And its full of Yankee haters. At least Fox doesn’t slob all over Jeter like ESPN does.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Every once a month he comes through am I gonna get the meme thrown in my grill?

I’ve laid off him. Ease up on me.

It’s not about you anymore, it’s just a general meme now. No offense meant to you.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        K thanks

  • Tom

McCarver one of the few people on earth who haven’t figured out that in a tie game in the 9th means there is never going to a save situation for the home team.

So apparently he’d still save Valverde….

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

For all you guys bitching about Girardi, how do you like Leyland putting in Dotel against 4 lefty hitters?

    • Mike Nitabach

      Fire both of them!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Give him credit for using his best reliever against the top of the order in the seventh.

  • CUYanks

Please don’t let Miguel homer this inning. Please don’t let Miguel homer this inning. Please don’t let Miguel homer this inning.

        no

        • Need Pitching

          yes

        • Bunt Gardner

          I guess they should have.

      • Mike Nitabach

Even McCarver is all like “don’t give him anything near a strike to hit”.

        • Mike Nitabach

          What the fucken hell!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?

      • FIPster Doofus

  • Kramerica Industries

    Fuck me sideways.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Why the hell are they throwing him strikes?

    • RetroRob

Don’t know. As good as he is, and as hard as he hits the Yankees, I’d take my chance with Fielder.

    • Rek4gehrig

      Exactly what I was thinking. I don’t get it. I really don’t

  • Athenian

    There’s the game. Fuck!

    • FIPster Doofus

      Not yet. Valverde sucks.

      • Athenian

Not against the Yankees. They chase his pitches.

        • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

You obviously don’t remember him turning a 7-2 game into a 7-5 game with the tying run at the plate earlier this year.

There is hope in one word: Valverde.

  • Widget

    Damn it. Game over.

  • Mike Nitabach

Why the fucking hell did they give him anything even close to hittable!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! WHY????????????

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

      That was probably a ball.

      • RBC

Actually it was a ball, but Cabrera is just that good.

    He’s still only 29?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    • CUYanks

Hilariously, “experts” in the ESPN “franchise draft” were taking guys like Yu Darvish, Jeff Samardzija and Neftali Feliz before him.

      • Kevin G.

Yu Darvish is the only one that isn’t 100% moronic. Only like 95%.

  • Tom

Joe Buck lights up for the Detroit highlights..

  • Karl Krawfid

Got to love watching Miguel hit. So lovely.

  • Mike Nitabach

That was just delusional. No one on base. PITCH AROUND THE MOTHERFUCKER! Goddamn. I am generally very calm but I am beside myself over that, because it was so unncecessary.

    • Kramerica Industries

I remember the 7th inning of Game 3.

Smoltz says something about being careful with Delmon Young since all he can hit is an over-the-middle fastball.

About three seconds later, he homers to right on an over-the-middle fastball.

That was so fucking predictable, and is one of the biggest reasons the Yankees lost last year.

  • DT

Goddamn..Cabrera again hit not terrible pitch into the OF…Friggin hate this guy.

  • FIPster Doofus

    Sweet dye job, Valverde.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Good steal by Wise. Gardner would still be standing on first.

C’mon Arod earn your fucking money for once!

Not with a left handed hitter. Plus with Granderson running there is less of a double play chance.

Double steal wouldn’t have happened with joe

I’m surprised that Wise can run so fast with those huge balls.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Wow.

  • DERP

    Our two best hitter people!

    • DT

Arod took pitches and ended up on Base. Cano is just SMH

  • Kramerica Industries

    Hahahaha.

1-28 the last 23 games. You can’t make that shit up.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Would it kill you to take a strike?

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

    Tex is gonna walk.

  • Widget

Fucking Cano. Guy can’t find the damn strike zone.

    • Greg

That pitch was a strike by the way

      • Need Pitching

        doesn’t matter

        • Athenian

          THIS.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

At least Tex will take the walk Valverde is trying to give him.

  • Bunt Gardner

    Someone lean into another pitch!

  • Need Pitching

    steal home
    it’s your only hope

  • Mike Nitabach

    TAKE ANOTHER

  • Mike Nitabach

    TAAAAAKE!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Take 2 pitches. Not 1. TWO.

  • FIPster Doofus

He’s not throwing three straight strikes now. Take take take.

  • mike_h

come on Tex, lay down a bunt like you said in Spring training

    • Need Pitching

      why?
that would almost guarantee the last out

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Please balk!

  • Mike Nitabach

    take again

  • Greg

That would have been a strike too.

  • Karl Krawfid

    This team I swear lol

  • Athenian

    Not good.

  • flamingo

    DON’T. SWING.

  • pat

He’s gonna throw a splitter and make Tex look nasty.

    • pat

WOOOOOOOOOOOO. Yay I’m dumb and wrong.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Ugh. That doesn’t qualify as too close to take.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Clutch walk.

  • Kramerica Industries

Thank God that was no-where near the zone.

  • FIPster Doofus

    hahaha, Valverde is so bad.

  • Mike Nitabach

    WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!

  • Karl Krawfid

    Hell. Yes.

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

Jeez Joe Buck, sound a little more excited.

  • jjyank

HUGE walk. Sit down you fucking clown!

  • flamingo

A rally against Valverde = BEST

  • RetroRob

Great, Tex. Robbie could have done that too and they’d have two runs, but we’ll take it.

    • The Troll

Watch some jackass swoop in with the whole “fallacy of the pre-determined outcome” flack…

      • RetroRob

Fortunately Michael Kay isn’t here. Or maybe he is. He has that night off. I’m sure what he does on his night’s off is post on RAB. Is that you, Michael?!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Alright birthday boy. Lets do it.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    YES!!!

  • Tom

    Better take a damn strike

  • RBC

I’m shocked Leyland has stuck with Valverde

    • RetroRob

He’s their closer. He knows how to handle the 9th inning. Yeah, right, that’s it.

  • 28 this year

on the bright side, the Yankees have to be leading the league in bases loaded walks. It is literally the only other outcome other than striking out or popping up.

  • Kramerica Industries

    That was a strike?

    What?

  • pat

Are you fucking kidding me with that 1-0 call? Jesus Christ.

  • Anon

    Terrible strike call

Well, gotta make them pay for that now.

  • Alkaline

I think Raul used the Confundus curse..

  • Mike Nitabach

    urgh

  • Kramerica Industries

    So much for that.

1-10 with RISP tonight. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  • Karl Krawfid

You have to be fucking kidding me? All that and we only got a run on a walk? Jesus Christ.

    • jjyank

Hey man, I’m just thrilled they tied the game.

      • Karl Krawfid

Don’t want to see us get walked off again.

        • jjyank

Nobody does, but at least the game is still going right now. I’ll take what I can get.

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

    This is absolutely mental.

  • pat

I wonder if that’s a record for most men sent to the plate in one inning and only scoring one run.

  • Need Pitching

    uGHHGGHHGHHGH

this RISP crap has to end at some point, right?

    Right?

  • The Scheister of Doom

Terrible baseball by both teams. Yeah the Yankees scored but holy shit my heart hurts.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Please win this game.

  • Athenian

This team is abysmal. How the fuck do a collection of overpaid plAyers suck so bad when it is necessary? This is beyond a slump, Girardi’s asinine excuses, I mean cliches, and all the other bullshit from the players. Just embarrassing!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      This is beyond a slump

They’ve won five of their last seven games.

      • Mike Nitabach

FIRE EVERYONE! FIRE AXISA!!!!!!!!!!! DRONE STRIKES ON RAB!!!!!!!!

      • RetroRo

        …and on the road.

      • RBC

That’s true, but it was against teams the Yanks should’ve beat. The Athletics and Royals are not a threat. The Angels took 2 out of 3. I’m more concerned about the series vs. the Angels and the Tigers.

        • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Games against the A’s count too. Just ask the Texas Rangers.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And if they’d lost the series to the A’s and Royals and beaten the Tigers and Angels, you’d say they’re not beating up on the bad teams like good teams are supposed to.

      • Athenian

3 against Oakland. And the last one 2-0. Really strikes fear.

        • Need Pitching

          fear-striking wins WS

          • Athenian

Yes it does. But not this team. Won’t make it out of the first round, assuming they win the one game playoff.

  • JohnnyC

When does Cabrera bat again? That’s how long this game is going. Joe just loves to watch this guy hit.

  • pat

Our lineup just got really shitty.

    • RBC

Our lineup has already gotten shitty.

  • DT

Cano is absolutely Terrible with RISP that is seems unreal

  • DERP

    need new pants

  • Kramerica Industries

I’ve been watching the Yankees, Spurs/Thunder, and Kings/Devils three-way for a good two hours now.

This is quite a life I lead (Jerry Seinfeld voice).

  • Tom

Valverde probably would have put everyone on base that inning if the Yankees let him.

Cano I expect to be hacking; but I couldn’t believe Granderson swung at the 1-0 pitch as wild as Valverde was.

And Bob Davidson should not be allowed to call balls/strikes anymore – just make him a designated balk caller. His zone tonight has just been absurd.

    • DT

Granderson actually had a good pitch to hit. Cano didn’t and was inexcusable that he swung at such a terrible pitch.

  • nsalem

This game is starting to remind me of this game from 5 years ago also in Detroit but with a longer rain delay. I think it lasted till 4 am . Hope the outcome is different.

    http://www.retrosheet.org/boxe.....ET2007.htm

  • Need Pitching

where the fuck was that pitch?

  • Kevin

Cano was the goat in that inning..as he has been for many of the RISP. His bad habits from 08 are showing up in spades.

    • RBC

We thought Melky was the bad influence on Cano, yet Cano is now the goat and Melky’s the best batter in the Majors. Go figure.

  • Need Pitching

    fuck

  • pat

    Nick Fisher?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Well, at least they put up a fight.

Oh look..the Tigers doing what we couldn’t.

  • Kramerica Industries

Well, the Yankees’ goose is likely cooked here.

Gotta hoe for the best, I guess.

We all may need hoe’s after this one.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    Beat Verlander.

  • DT

David Phelps should not have started the inning.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Why shouldn’t he have started that inning? He’s a pitcher on this team. He’s fair game. He got hit. He lost the game. Get back out there and do a better job next time.

      • DT

We had better options with Boone starting the inning.

        • Robinson Tilapia

Sure, but the guy on the mound still has to do his job. If Phelps is going to get opportunities like this moving forward, he has to get the job done.

          • DT

True, i believe that we should have exhausted all of our options before going to lesser pitchers. Logan at that point was clearly the better option.

  • Greg

5-4 roadtrip, again which is not bad according to the old adage. However, the Yankees are expected to win the World Series every year and so far the expectations should be lowered considerably

    • DT

Did the game tomorrow already happen? We beat Verlander last time..we can hope right?

      • Robinson Tilapia

Phil Hughes will shock the world tomorrow. It will be like when Barry Horowitz won that match.

      • Greg

We couldn’t score 2 runs of Rick Porcello.

Couple that with Hughes starting is a recipe for disaster

        • DT

          Weirder shit has happened

    • Robinson Tilapia

      *checks sarcasm meter*

      • Greg

Really. What is the expectation of the Yankees EVERY YEAR. To win the World Series.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Caps don’t make it any more realistic.

          • Greg

It might not be. But that’s what it is, nonetheless

            • Robinson Tilapia

You’re no Steve Austin, Greg. That’s for sure.

              AND THAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE.

              *stunners Greg*

              *stunners Axisa*

        • Robinson Tilapia

….and anything else is failure. blah blah blah….

          So original.

The hope of the Yankees is to win the WS every year. If you’d like, I can pull out my calculator and show you what the odds of any team in baseball, high payroll or not, actually doing that is, but I’d be wasting my time, wouldn’t I?

If it’s going to be that long a season, Greg, then stock up on those meds. You’re going to need them.

  • Karl Krawfid

Omir Santos hits a 2 run Home run in Fenway to beat papelbon and the Sox, but McCarver thinks this sac fly is the biggest moment of his life.

    lol.

    • Robinson Tilapia

McCarver thinks his last trip to the toilet was the biggest moment of his life.

On the other hand, Joe Buck thinks seeing Troy Aikman naked was the biggest in his.

  • Widget

hahahahha. Just pathetic. Sanots is not even a major league level player. The Red Sox dismantled the Tigers, shame we can’t do that same.

    • Greg

Didn’t we dismantle the Red Sox?

      • RBC

That’s not saying much these days.

        • Need Pitching

          they’re better than the Tigers

    • DT

We lost a one run game. We got dismantled totally.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

The Red Sox got dismantled at comerica, dismantled the Tigers at home. The Yankees beat the Tigers in a series at home earlier.

  • Robinson Tilapia

The game no one wanted to win ends.

It was going pretty well for all involved until Phelps and Valverde showed up.

  • Tyler

    No more IBBs please.

    • Bunt Gardner

The IBB did not affect the outcome.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Sure it did. They had to complete change their pitching plan.

        • AndrewYF

Their pitching plan was to try and get the first guy out. Phelps pitched two balls way out of the zone. So Pena smartly decided he’d rather have Phelps pitch to the shitty backup catcher than an actual major leaguer on a 2-0 count.

  • Athenian

Well done boys. Well done. 2008 all over again.

    • Need Pitching

      nope
They will make the playoffs this season

          possibly
          it’s still the playoffs
getting to the playoffs is a good thing

    • Robinson Tilapia

Did you go fuck yourself in 2008 as well?

      • Athenian

Wow that was so original. You stay classy there fish boy.

    • Bunt Gardner

Don’t worry, Goldilocks…even if the Yanks win tomorrow, I’m sure you’ll still have things to whine about.

      • Athenian

Hurling insults? If you don’t like what I say don’t read it. Pretty simple. I can’t apologize that you are quicker to accept mediocrity when I won’t. Not from a grossly overpaid team that is so underperforming they will have to play .600 ball going forward to have a chance at the playoffs.

        • Robinson Tilapia

I’d like to see a copy of your resume.

        • Bunt Gardner

It’s not about accepting mediocrity; it’s about your constant complaining.

        • Need Pitching

They are 1.5 games out of first place and currently tied for the last wild card spot.
Why would they have to play .600 ball going forward to have a chance at the playoffs?

  • Greg

Kings win and this series is over

    • pistol pete

      Kings just won in ot.

      • Greg

        And that’s why its over

  • pistol pete

Yankees had a million chances to win this game but just can’t hit when it counts. Very frustrating given the pedigrees of the guys who didn’t come through tonight and for what they are paying them you’d think one would be capable of at least a single when it counts. Now tomorrow we get Verlander against Hughes, nice.

  • 718 (Bronx)

And just like that the Yankees have lose this series, because Hughes and his sorry ass is not beating Verlander.

  • Kevin

Ynaks deserves to lose..they deserve to lose every game from here on out until changes are made.
    28th with the bases loaded…from a $280 million dollar lineup,that’s a disgrace. 1-15 disgrace.

    • DT

What changes? Seriously, what do you expect them to do?

    • pat

280 million? HAHA DAMN! That’s expensive.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

        When all else fails, exaggerate!

    • Bunt Gardner

      TEH CHANGES!!!11!!!

  • wow

    no consistency.

  • your mom

This offense is soooooooooo frustrating to watch. Killing me man, killing me!

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Steve Sciacco

Hughes vs Verlander tomorrow. That should go well.

    • Athenian

For Verlander. Might get a no hitter

  • RBC

FYI – Post game is on YES right now

  • Kevin

In the same breath..the Tigers weren’t exactly RISP wonders either..Caberra was the difference for them.

    • DT

Exactly, it was fail on both ends. But Detriot just had one guy that was totally locked in.

      • JohnnyC

And that’s why they chose to throw strikes to him in the 8th. Logical.

        • DT

It was dumb. But on the other hand that pitch he took out of the park was not a completely terrible one.

          • JohnnyC

Because of Wade’s changeup, he actually is more effective versus lefties. I would’ve unintentionally intentionally walked Cabrera and gone after Fielder. With 2 outs as well.

  • pat

For his career Verlander is 4-3 with a 4.16 ERA. By all means the game is a lock, HAH.

    • pat

      *Against the Yankees.

  • David N

I know it’ll be a winning trip, but this road trip does NOT feel like a success.

  • Tom

Yankees apparently weren’t OK with a gift wrapped win from Valverde and instead play “I’m going to be the hero”

Don’t care if the Granderson 1-0 pitch was even an 80mph fastball down the middle…. as wild as Valverde was you have to take a strike in that spot. 1-1 with no out is not the end of the world, take a damn strike.

And Cano is just pitiful. 2HBP, 1BB, 1 gift out from Grandy and he’s hacking before he even stepped in the batter’s box. The only reason he didn’t swing at the first pitch was because it was more than a foot outside and couldn’t reach it.

I think one of the reasons the Yankee hitting is so poor with men on base is they are overly aggressive in hitter counts with men on base. It’s one thing if the guy is around the plate but this guy is only throwing fastballs and is all over the place.

    • DT

Grandy has a .900 OPS with RISP this year and got a pich right down the middle. Meanwhile Cano on the other hand has a terrible plate approach with RISP .495 OPS(!!!) and an avg at around .100, He swung a ball clearly was too inside.

  • Karl Krawfid

Joe G is really pissed right now you can tell.

  • Athenian

I don’t even know what that means. When all else fails hurl insults? That is a great tactic. Here is a thought, if you sent like me expressing my frustration for a grossly overpaid ineffective team, don’t read it.

  • pistol pete

Joe has tried everything to make this lineup click and hasn’t been able to find its groove. I have no idea how line these guys up. I’m a huge Cano fan but he has sucked this year especially when it has counted most. Arod is a mere shell of his past, it looks like the steroids have taken their toll. Tex is wildly inconsistent especially given his $23m/yr contract. I love Swisher but he normally stinks when it counts especially in the playoffs. This team needs fixing but given their bad contracts there really is nowhere to go. Next year the only open position is Swishers and the best availavle will be Hamilton and Melky.

    • Robinson Tilapia

*hands Pete videotape of yesterday’s game*

      • pistol pete

So you really think the hitting has been satisfactory this year based on yesterday’s 9 4 win, give me a break.

  • pistol pete

Bob Davidson is the worst umpire in the game and MLB should do something about it. Forgetting that he has lost his patience and can’t tolerate any criticism he just flat out can’t umpire any more. The call at first last night when Jeter threw out the runner that dove into first was wrong by three feet. Granderson’s two ball strike calls tonight were awful. Late in the game I think he just got tired and lost concentration. Jeter’s 3 0 pitch was a foot high and he called it a strike. He missed a terrible ball strike call on Ibanez’s last at bat. He doesn’t wait long enough on ball strike calls, calls too quickly and often is just flat wrong. He’s too old and has lost the ability to officiate at this level. These games are too important to worry about his feelings, he needs to be replaced and it can’t come too quickly.

  • pistol pete

Can you imagine the Mets have a better record than the Yankees, impossible.

    • DT

They don’t play in the AL? Does it matter?

    • RBC

      Surprising, but not impossible.
