Game 52: Another Youngster

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

The Yankees pounded rookie left-hander Casey Crosby in his first big league start last night, and they’re actually going to face a younger pitcher tonight. Right-hander Rick Porcello is making his 100th career start today and is more than three months younger than Crosby. That’s what happens when you jump from High-A to the show at age 20. The Yankees have won two straight and five of their last seven, so let’s see if they turn what is already a good road trip into a great road trip. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
DH Eric Chavez
C Russell Martin

RHP Hiroki Kuroda

Tonight’s game starts at 7:15pm ET and can be seen on FOX. Enjoy.

  1. DERP says:

I know the game is on Fox. Is it also on YES?

  2. Robinson Tilapia says:

It would help us all tremendously if Kuroda could help us know if we’re getting Good or Bad Kuroda on any given start by rocking an evil goatee on Bad Kuroda nights.

Kuroda clean shaven tonight? Porcello on mound? Another Yankee victory.

  3. Tom says:

Rays just lost; the Yankees can move to 0.5 games of first, and even with BAL and TB in the loss column, with a win tonight.

  4. Gone Phishin' says:

Anyone else getting technical difficulties with Fox?

  5. Cuso says:

Porcello. I’m not going to tempt fate and say what’s “supposed” to happen.

We all know what’s “supposed” to happen.

I will, however, predict at least 3 hits for Russell Martin. It feels like it’s that time.

Who’s coming with me? Who’s coming with me?

  6. Danny says:

With the complete understanding that he is only 23, I must say the Porcello has been a disappointment so far. Hardly his fault, was completely rushed by the Tigers. Good example why you shouldn’t rush pitchers, only threw 125 innings before being brought up.

Its a shame, was a favorite of mine and was hoping the Yanks would take him when he started falling in the draft. Really hope he turns it around, time is definitely on his side.

  7. Manny's BanWagon says:

Let’s hope that Kuroda can get on a little roll here.

The back 3 of the rotation in Hughes, Nova and Kuroda have a combined 0.8 WAR a third of the way into the season which is pretty horrific.

  8. Cuso says:

Whoever took the under on the amount of time before McCarver got phlegm and lost track of reality just won $100

  9. Cuso says:

    Uh oh. Balkin Bob.

  10. Tom says:

That 2-0 pitch to Granderson was off the plate… looks like another night of a homeplate ump calling outside pitches to lefty hitters 4-6″ off the plate.

  11. jjyank says:

Darth Vader thew out the first pitch?? WTF?

  12. mike_h says:

5 years ago, ARod would have ran home, come on Tex bring em in!!!

  13. Danny says:

Video of DBJ’s homer from the other night

  14. jjyank says:

Is it me, or are the Fox cameras really bouncy? Kind of annoying.

  15. Mike Axisa says:

These Cubs uniforms are … interesting.

  16. Will The Thrill says:

I’m really hoping this gets rained out. I’m not feeling this matchup at all…

  17. C says:

Rain delay and we don’t even get the YES smooth jazz rain delay music. What a rip.

  18. Robinson Tilapia says:

I’m sorry, but could they have looked at a damn weather map before deciding to start this game? Rain delay in the first inning? Really?

The Cubs seem to be wearing pajamas. Whatever works, I guess.

Whoever the “in the studio” guy is on Fox, he looks like something Sean Hannity crapped out his ass.

    • Greg says:

Remember last year when game 1 was started and then canceled. Apparently when we play the Tigers. MLB forgets to check any weather maps.

  19. Pat D says:

I guess it’s really sad to be a Mets fan.

Didn’t know the game was in a delay when I got into my car and turned on the radio, so I switched to WFAN. Jeez, all these people calling in as if yesterday’s game was a World Series clincher.

I was almost in tears due to laughing so hard.

    • Steve S. says:

You would think Johan Santana just gave birth to their first born child.

I don’t want to rain on their parade, but don’t these people know no-hitters are largely meaningless? Unless you’re talking about a Verlander, Unit or Nolan Ryan, the difference between a no-hitter and 1 or 2 hitter is almost all luck. Umps are part of that luck, so I have no issue with the blown call. Until we have robot umps, all no hitters go in the same category to me, and its one I don’t take all that seriously.

      • OMG! Bagels! says:

I don’t want to take anything away from Santana but I think Freese gave him a bit on the 3-0 pitch.

        • Steve S. says:

I read a book a few years back that had multiple accounts from good sources saying the final strike in Don Larsen’s perfect game was about a foot off the plate. I mean, come on. They’re all tainted in some way. Umps are part of the game, and they blow calls all the time whether its balls and strikes or Jeffery Mayer. Nobody’s taking back 1996, nor should they.

      • Fin says:

Yep, a 134 pitch, 5 walk game with 8K’s isnt all the dominate. No where does it scream, man that guy was nasty. It screams baip bad luck. I’m happy for him, and the Mets, and I also think the same hoopla would accompany a CC no hitter and Mets fans would be making fun of Yankee fans.

        • vicki says:

yep. his whip was actually lower in the the 96p cg shutout (against the pads, but still), 4h/0bb vs. 0h/5bb. five walks isn’t embarrassing (what’s up, AJ) but it’s a bit undignified.

        • Tom says:

Martin has not been all that great on balls in the dirt this year.

    • OMG! Bagels! says:

They don’t have a lot to live for but I was a rabid Yankee fan in the 80s so I admire those who live by the team and die by the team. They don’t seem to be bandwagon jumpers when the team is only doing well like some people in a city north of here seem to be.

      • Steve (different one) says:

        mets attendance per game:
        2009: 38,941
        2010: 31,602
        2011: 29,044
        2012: 26,659

        All fanbases have bandwagoners…

  20. jjyank says:

Really didn’t think rain would be so much of a problem…guess I’ll watch another episode of The League. Anyone watch that show? Pure gold.

  21. Mike Axisa says:

    Nick job, Hirok.

  22. DERP says:

    Promote Gary Sanchez right now.

  23. Dino Velvet says:

Sure could use Melky and his .376 average and .977 OPS

    • jjyank says:

      Yay hindsight!

      • CUYanks says:

We could have had Jose Bautista a couple of years ago for literally nothing!

      • Dino Velvet says:

        you got me.

I admit it. no one thought trading a 25 yr old Melky for Javy Vazquez had any downside.

Cashman can not fail, he can only be failed.

        • Mike Axisa says:

Melky was released and free to sign with any team. If the Yankees would have re-signed him, would have have changed the way we evaluate the trade? No, because it’s a completely separate event.

          • Steve S. says:

That, and even the Arodys Vizcaino side of the deal hasn’t worked out at all (so far) from the Braves perspective. The most productive piece in that deal so far has been Boone Logan, so you could argue the Yanks did OK.

        • jjyank says:

Melky had been trending downward for a couple of years before the trade. Javy was coming off of a Cy Young caliber season, and had been a virtual lock for 200 IP and 200 Ks per season.

Melky literally screamed 4th outfielder. Remember the Melky + IPK for player X jokes? It’s because Melky was so “meh” that everyone wanted to trade him. If fact, Melky so unbelievably terrible with the Braves after the trade, he was released. Stop pretending like you’re not talking in 20/20 hindsight.

    • Fin says:

Just would have had to live throw a couple years of the worst player in baseball to get that. That would have been fun.

    • Greg says:

I’m not pissed about the missed opportunities because they have all come with 2 outs which means the odds are against us scoring.

    • Steve S. says:

Melky always had 4th OF written all over him as a Yankee, but one thing always nagged at me about him. He was called up at such a young age, and guys like that tend to be big producers. Its a self selecting group comprised mostly of A-Rod, Griffey and Bryce Harper types, but getting to the MLB leven and sticking at such a young age says something about a player, and the longer you stay the more things you pick up. He’s in great shape, has been for the past two years, and is putting up numbers no one ever thought he would. Good for him. With that being said I don’t see the Yanks pursuing him this offseason.

    • Mike Axisa says:

So could every team in baseball. Thanks for the insight.

      • CUYanks says:

We also should have bought low on Cliff Lee when he was sent to the minors and Roy Halladay the season he had a 10+ ERA. Also, we should have taken a chance on Josh Hamilton when he was basically out of baseball!

  24. jjyank says:

    Yeahhh Chavy!

  25. Cuso says:

Damn. He could still do it.

  26. pat says:

    Raul for GG!

  27. StanfordBen says:

Stuck listening to radio again, and I decided to try Sterling just so I can complain about it :).

  28. pat says:

Wow Arod is 125 HR away from the all time record. That’s soooo many dingers.

  29. Mike Axisa says:

Granderson is ruining the post I was going to write about him not stealing bases anymore.

  30. Greg says:

    He was out

  31. jjyank says:

Grandy was out, but I’ll take it.

  32. Greg says:

Again, they haven’t had the golden opportunity yet. Porcello is doing a good job with location

  33. RetroRob says:

It’s sad, but I no longer expect Cano to get hits with RISP, even more so than other Yankees. Hopefully this will correct.

    • Steve S. says:

..or maybe this is the correction. Didn’t the Yanks lead all of baseball last year with the bases loaded and/or RISP?

      • RetroRob says:

Yes. They did very well the last two years, and Cano was good. For his career, though, I believe Cano has a lifetime BA of .260 with RISP. It needs to be correcting upwards!

  34. Greg says:

Martin has not been good defensively this year.

  35. jjyank says:

    Thank you Robbie.

  36. Mike Axisa says:

    Nice grab, Robbie.

  37. Tom says:

Not sure if there is anyone better on that type of popup

    • jjyank says:

He’s made a couple of those plays look real slick this year, I’ve noticed it too. Also no second baseman makes the ball to the third base side and throw across the body play better than Cano either.

      • Tom says:

I think because he has a pretty long stride, the amount of ground he covers is sometimes deceptive.

You get a midget like the guy in Boston and he has to make about 5-8 more strides on a play like that and it looks like he’s moving faster or covering more ground.

  38. Kevin G. says:

You have got to be fucking kidding me. Fuck you Don Kelly, you piece of shit.

  39. jjyank says:

    Fuck you Don Kelly!!

  40. Kramerica Industries says:

I’m listening to Sterling since Fox and MLB are a bunch of assholes about these Fox Saturday games…

    Son of a bitch.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

Should point out I’ve got Game 2 LA/NJ on instead.

I place more credence on a Final game than a baseball game on 6/2. Normally, I can do both. Not tonight.

    • RetroRob says:

I’d do that too if the radio audio was in synch with the TV video. I could even tolerate John Sterling’s “it’s high and deep” calls since I could determine for myself if they were HRs off the bat.

  41. Mike Axisa says:

Miggy got all of that one. Holy crap.

  42. RetroRob says:

I don’t know why Granderson didn’t make an over-the-wall catch on that ball like Kelly did to Tex.

  43. Greg says:

    An Absolute Bomb

  44. Fin says:

Wow he hit the shit outa that ball. That sounded like a bomb went off when he hit it.

  45. Miggy kills the Yanks. Seems to do OK against everyone else, too.

  46. DERP says:

    Better hitter: Cabrera or Votto?

  47. Kramerica Industries says:

How did R.A. Dickey turn out to be such a good pitcher?

2.69 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, but this goes back ever since the Mets signed him. He’s been fantastic.

    • RetroRob says:

      Easy answer: NL.

Most likely answer: He’s a knuckleballer, so he certainly wouldn’t be the first to master it in his 30s.

  48. Athenian says:

I swear Kuroda gets he worst run support.

    • Greg says:

As has been noted before. He had the same trouble in Los Angeles. That’s why he has only one MLB season over .500

    • Need Pitching says:

      5th worst in AL

    • Mike Axisa says:

He ranks 116th out of 120 qualified starters in run support. Yanks have scored two or fewer runs in six of his ten starts, not counting tonight.

    • vicki says:

i’d like to see analysis of pitchers’ time taken between pitches. i may be imagining it but it seems like the guys who consistently get run support are quick catch and throw guys.

      • jjyank says:

I can’t imagine any correlation there. What does that have to do with run support?

        • vicki says:

rhythm. it’s draining, demoralizing even, to stand behind a guy waiting for something to happen.

pitchf/x has time stamp; maybe i’ll look into it.

  49. Karl Krawfid says:

Why come Granderson didn’t jump to try and rob Miguel?

  50. Greg says:

This is basically the swing game because the pitching matchup tomorrow is a major mismatch.

5-4 road trip staring us in the face, which is still okay considering that old adage.

  51. jjyank says:

    Wow nice move Kuroda!

  52. jjyank says:

Ballsy base running, I love it.

  53. Greg says:

    Here is the golden opportunity

  54. Kramerica Industries says:

    Go-Go Yankees.

That was brilliant. And totally unexpected.

  55. Kevin G. says:

    Angels baseball!

  56. RetroRob says:

Let’s all think positive RISP thoughts.

  57. Karl Krawfid says:

    Swish is yuck.

  58. Tom says:

“Working his way back from Tommy John surgery” (Johan Santana)

McCarver… just awful… time to hang it up buddy. The guy misspeaks and makes more shit up than pretty much anyone going today.

  59. Karl Krawfid says:

Why is Curtis Playing that shallow for Miguel?

  60. DERP says:

    Good play IMO!

  61. Need Pitching says:

    thanks Miggy

  62. vicki says:

    the ol’ fake passed ball.

  63. Athenian says:

Yanks have to pull this out. Verlander pitched shitty in his last start, won’t happen back to back.

This offense is on one game, absent for the next 2-3. What will they do when they face better teams. C’mon!

  64. RetroRob says:

Let’s go. It would be nice to score some runs (as in more than one) with Kuroda pitches.

  65. Athenian says:

Good thing Arod didn’t throw out Young, probably would have assaulted him. #monsterjackass

  66. DERP says:

    Nice job by Phil Cock!

  67. RetroRob says:

You know Jeter’s going to bunt here.

  68. Fin says:

At least we got Jeter and Granderson comming up with men on. Hopefully, Jeter doesnt fucking bunt.

  69. American Wang says:

FYI, depuala made his debute for the dsl team. 6k in 3ip gave up 1er.

  70. Mike Axisa says:

First pitch GIDP is imminent. Bunt.

  71. vicki says:

people listening to sterling: did he say “aaand coke deals.”

    • RetroRob says:

I’m waiting for some player to come up named Meth. Now pitching, Phil Meth.

    • TomH says:

How else might he say it? It’s like trying to avoid hundreds of years of the standard meanings of “gay” because someone will snicker. The guy’s name is “Coke” and “deals” is a standard announcer’s verb.

  72. Pat D says:

Only 14 days left after tonight. I’m not sure I can handle this anymore.

Let me just ask all of you people a few things. If you need tech support for your cell phone, no matter who your provider is, keep the following things in mind:
    1) Don’t call from your cell phone. If you have no other phone, don’t bother calling until you do.
    2) Don’t expect to get a new phone without doing some kind of troubleshooting. We have to do it.
    3) If your smartphone is freezing, it’s because of what’s on your phone. It’s not the phone’s fault. Stop using all your storage space on Facebook.
    4) If you get someone who can’t seem to speak English…well, tough. Everybody has outsourced now, you’re going to deal with this. If you’d rather not call, figure out how to use your carrier’s website.

    Rant over.

    • jjyank says:

I just go straight to my carrier’s store when I have a problem. I hate trying to solve things over the phone. I have Verizon and I just go right to the Verizon store and talk to real people. Works for me.

Anyway, keep your head up man. Take a nice vacation for yourself after it’s over.

      • Pat D says:

Yea, you don’t want to go to the store if you have T-Mobile. I hear from way too many customers that they go to the store for help and they get told to call us and are basically shooed out of the store.

When I worked for an indirect agent Cingular store, I’d never do that to a customer.

  73. Karl Krawfid says:

When was the last time Jeter did something extra clutch?

  74. FIPster Doofus says:

    Good call, good execution.

  75. Greg says:

They could walk Granderson to load the bases

  76. Ivan says:

Great bunt Jeter….(rolls eyes in disgust)

  77. DERP says:

Blow your load all over this guy Grandy.

  78. RetroRob says:

A base hit here would be cool.

  79. Cy Pettitte says:

    go Joe!

  80. Kevin G. says:

    Joe mad

  81. DERP says:

Well, we win. Thanks Joe. Way to take one for the team.

  82. Kramerica Industries says:

    WTF just happened with Joe?

  83. RetroRob says:

    What the hell?

  84. jjyank says:

What what happened? Girardi is PISSED.

  85. Mike Nitabach says:

What the hell is Joe going ballistic about?

  86. Karl Krawfid says:

    Damn Joe G got pissed.

  87. Karl Krawfid says:

Joe G was mad that Jeter bunted.

  88. Kramerica Industries says:

Meanwhile, Granderson strikes out on three pitches.

  89. Widget says:

I missed it but I assume Long was tossed because of the terrible strikezone?

  90. Karl Krawfid says:

A-Rod needs to get his foot down because of that stupid ass leg kick.

  91. Greg says:

That first pitch is why Grandy swung at the last pitch

  92. Athenian says:

Fuck. Up to Arod. He will fail.

  93. Widget says:

You know A-Rod is going to do something unclutch cause he’s not a true yankee.

  94. Mike Nitabach says:

He was keeping it down in the Os series.

  95. Cuso says:

What the hell is going on?

  96. Brandon says:

The ump earned himself another suspension this year. He clearly went over to the Yankee dugout. Almost provoking it. Arent you not allowed to go to the teams dugout unless you have reason? This no arguing balls and strikes shit has gotten to be rediculous. Especially when that strike 1 to Granderson might have just been the worst call of all time.

  97. Ivan says:

    Cmon A-Rod….

  98. Cuso says:

    Aod getting fastball

  99. DERP says:

    Great idea to bunt!

  100. Greg says:

Amazing how a bad strike call can turn a game. The umpire destroyed that inning.

  101. Kramerica Industries says:

    Fucking figures.

Benoit coming in in the 7th and bailing out the Tigers is way too reminiscent of something we all remember too vividly.

  102. Mike Axisa says:

    Frustrating, but completely predictable.

  103. Karl Krawfid says:

Fucking horrible. Take the damn walk.

  104. Mike Nitabach says:

These umps are self-aggrandizing fuckwits. No one gives a shit about them, and they create little dramas like this to make themselves feel more important and at the center of the action.

And BTW, I fucking hate Joe Buck.

  105. Ivan says:

just an awful inning there, and it had the potential to b a good one but it all went down hill once Jeter inexcusably sac bunted.

    • Need Pitching says:

      you prefer double plays?
Jeter is a career .172 hitter against Benoit.
Bunt was the correct move, Granderson and ARod just didn’t do the job.

    • Bunt Gardner says:

      • Mike Axisa says:

Yeah really, even I was okay with that bunt. Jeter against a RHP and he’s been beating the ball into the ground all night? A double play is the best case. That means you avoided the triple play.

  106. DERP says:

    We’re winning this game.

  107. Midland TX says:

Maybe the reason Girardi shoved two fingers in Davidson’s face was to say, “This is the second time!” in reference to screwing up Teix’s at-bat as well.

  108. Athenian says:

That is why the bunt was stupid. Joe should have been kicked out of the organization. He is just a horrible in game manager.

  109. Kevin says:

Horrible inning but the umpire made it so Granderson had to pretty much swing at anything.
A-Rod..he is what he is at this point.

  110. DERP says:

Why the hell doesn’t Duane Below just pronounce his last name the way the word ‘below’ is normally pronounced.

  111. Cuso says:

    Obviously this is conjecture:

On the foul pop, I think Davidson took the mask off and stared Long down. He probably heard chirping on the strike one call and gave Long a chance to mouth off. You could see Long say “what are you looking at?” And then Balkin Bob tossed him.

Entirely provoked by Bob by taking his mask off and staring KLong down.

    • Brandon says:

Yep. Davidson provoked it, ejected Long and Girardi went wild. Davidson earned himself another suspension with that one.

    • Mike Nitabach says:

Umpires should accept that they are not part of the action, are not supposed to be part of the action, and when they make themselves part of the action like this, they are being dumshitte assholes.

  112. Ivan says:

Lets go guys, time to get the damn lead!

  113. Tom says:

Balkin Bob… truly one of the worst umps going – not just the balk calls, but he might be one of he worst behind home plate.

The plate in Detroit has apparently been shifted ~6″ toward 3rd base:

There’s been at least 10 pitches well off the plate called strikes (and I’m not including the 5-6 just out of the zone which are typically called strrkes)

  114. jjyank says:

Wait when did Valverde dye his hair/facial hair blonde? Wow, can you look more like a tool? Really, you can? Bravo, Jose.

  115. Mike Axisa says:

Dotel vs. three LHB. If they can’t tie the game here, they never will.

  116. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Can MLB just put all the Bob Davidsons and Joe Wests in one or two crews and only have them work series between bad teams? At least then their awfulness will have minimal damage.

  117. Mike Nitabach says:

I was actually thinking that the blonde goatee looked decent. But I’m an idiot.

  118. Tom says:

Dotel has thrown 1 strike this inning out of the first 9 pitches.

  119. Mike Nitabach says:

Could Joe Buck sound any more disappointed when Yankee pops go foul instead of out? Fuck that asshole.

    • Tom says:

Well at least he didn’t label it a “bad break” like he did the popup last inning that went into the stands. (or maybe it was ME-Carver?)

  120. Karl Krawfid says:

    Birthday Blast inc.

  121. Mike Nitabach says:

    C’mon, Raul!

  122. Kramerica Industries says:

That “no wins without a home run” note is extremely annoying, especially now that we are into June.

That just one-dimensional baseball at its worst.

    • RBC says:

I agree. Even with Gardner in the lineup, it seems as if we’d still have problems advancing runners. That’s a ridiculous stat with this lineup.

    • Need Pitching says:

so if Granderson hit a 3-run double instead of a grandslam and ARod didn’t homer in the ninth yesterday, and the Yankees then won 6-4 instead of 9-4, you would feel better about the team?

  123. Widget says:

come on guys Dotel sucks. This is just sad.

  124. Mike Nitabach says:

  125. Athenian says:

Winnable games lost. Wonder how many there have been for the Yanks?

  129. Karl Krawfid says:

    Clutch baby!

  130. Ivan says:

    In the Nick of time!

  131. Need Pitching says:

    Garbage Time FTT!!!!!

  132. Mike Nitabach says:

  133. DERP says:

Don’t you stupid idiots ever, ever doubt Nick.

  134. Tom says:

A true clutch hitter would have homered on that…

  135. Karl Krawfid says:

    Tony Pena for manager!

  136. FIPster Doofus says:

Really, McCarver? Detroit can’t afford to use Valverde because it’s a tie game? Mainstream baseball analysts are such morons.

  137. Cuso says:

We have entered the Twilight zone

  138. Scheister of Doom says:

    Trout would’ve caught that.

  139. Mike Axisa says:

Nick Swisher just makes stuff happen.

  140. Kramerica Industries says:

When did the Yankees become such a running team?

  141. DERP says:

    so sexy

  142. jjyank says:

    Wow Swish!! Huge play(s).

  143. Mike Nitabach says:

Joe Buck is making me sick with his overt lack of enthusiasm when the Yanks do anything good. What a fucking asshole.

    • RBC says:

Remember, the national broadcasts have to play to the middle America crowd. And its full of Yankee haters. At least Fox doesn’t slob all over Jeter like ESPN does.

  144. Cuso says:

Every once a month he comes through am I gonna get the meme thrown in my grill?

I’ve laid off him. Ease up on me.

  145. Tom says:

McCarver one of the few people on earth who haven’t figured out that in a tie game in the 9th means there is never going to a save situation for the home team.

So apparently he’d still save Valverde….

  146. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

For all you guys bitching about Girardi, how do you like Leyland putting in Dotel against 4 lefty hitters?

  147. CUYanks says:

Please don’t let Miguel homer this inning. Please don’t let Miguel homer this inning. Please don’t let Miguel homer this inning.

  148. RetroRob says:

  149. Cuso says:

If we go to extras Martin can still get 3 knocks. Not that I want that…..I’ll just take atwRussell jack next inning ftw

  150. Kramerica Industries says:

    Fuck me sideways.

  151. Mike Axisa says:

Why the hell are they throwing him strikes?

  152. Athenian says:

    There’s the game. Fuck!

  153. Widget says:

    Damn it. Game over.

Not a horrible, horrible pitch. Still…should be no where near the zone there.

  159. mike_h says:

Wade has cost us 2 games this road trip….#jus sayin

  160. Mike Nitabach says:

Why the fucking hell did they give him anything even close to hittable!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! WHY????????????

  161. Kevin G. says:

    He’s still only 29?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    • CUYanks says:

Hilariously, “experts” in the ESPN “franchise draft” were taking guys like Yu Darvish, Jeff Samardzija and Neftali Feliz before him.

  162. Tom says:

Joe Buck lights up for the Detroit highlights..

And he sounds like Hawk Harrelson calling a play for the road team when the Yankees do something good.

  163. Cuso says:

    Miguel just Trumboed Wade again

  164. Greg says:

Cant blame the offense right there. 5-4 roadtrip on the way

  165. Karl Krawfid says:

Got to love watching Miguel hit. So lovely.

  166. Mike Nitabach says:

That was just delusional. No one on base. PITCH AROUND THE MOTHERFUCKER! Goddamn. I am generally very calm but I am beside myself over that, because it was so unncecessary.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

I remember the 7th inning of Game 3.

Smoltz says something about being careful with Delmon Young since all he can hit is an over-the-middle fastball.

About three seconds later, he homers to right on an over-the-middle fastball.

That was so fucking predictable, and is one of the biggest reasons the Yankees lost last year.

  167. DT says:

Goddamn..Cabrera again hit not terrible pitch into the OF…Friggin hate this guy.

  168. FIPster Doofus says:

    Sweet dye job, Valverde.

  169. Karl Krawfid says:

    Wooo clutch from Martin!

  170. Kramerica Industries says:

Jose Valverde can take his jig and shove it up his ass.

  171. Mike Nitabach says:

Whoah, the dude’s goatee matches his hair tail.

  172. Mike Axisa says:

Oh crap they’re going to bunt.

  173. Cuso says:

Get ready for 14 innings baby

  174. RetroRob says:

Holy crap. That crap on Valverde’s face. Can this guy be any bigger a jackass.

  180. Mike Nitabach says:

  181. FIPster Doofus says:

    A Wise decision.

  182. jjyank says:

Ballsy steal, but I love it.

  183. Cuso says:

    He could’ve stolen 3rd there

  184. Mike Axisa says:

Good steal by Wise. Gardner would still be standing on first.

  185. Cuso says:

Pleas3 don’t bunt “just to get him to 3rd”

  186. Need Pitching says:

    don’t bunt please

  187. Mike Axisa says:

Valverde’s not throwing three strikes before he throws one ball to Jeter. Take take take.

  188. Kramerica Industries says:

Why in the blasted fuck was Jeter even showing bunt, 3-0?

  189. Mike Axisa says:

A double steal would be pretty ballsy.

  190. Mike Nitabach says:

    C’mon, GRANDY!

  191. Widget says:

    Double steal.

  192. Cuso says:

    Do. Not. Bunt.

  197. Cuso says:

ARod needs to pull a Buttermaker and get HBP

  198. RetroRob says:

RISP hit, please. And if it just so happens to be over the wall, so be it.

  199. DERP says:

Love the double steal. Right-handed batter up, great call.

  204. Kramerica Industries says:

More great base-running by this team tonight, picking up Granderson’s mistake.

  205. Mike E says:

So I kinda like Tony Pena.

  206. jjyank says:

The Yankees (Wise and Jeter) have massive balls.

  207. Tom says:

    Tony Pena for manager!

  208. mike_h says:

Pena sending the runners since he aint gonna get another chance to manage

  209. Mike Nitabach says:

    YEAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring in the runner!

  210. Widget says:

2 on no outs with Grandy, A-Rod and Cano. Yep the 2012 Yankees will find a way to lose this game.

  211. pat says:

    I hate Valverde so much.

  212. Athenian says:

C’mon Arod earn your fucking money for once!

  213. DERP says:

Looking forward to the Wallace Matthews column saying that the Yankees don’t trust A-Rod so they had to double steal.

  214. Widget says:

Should have done that with the last at bat.

  215. Athenian says:

Double steal wouldn’t have happened with joe

  216. DERP says:

I’m surprised that Wise can run so fast with those huge balls.

  217. Mike Nitabach says:

    wild pitch c’mon

  218. Karl Krawfid says:

If A-Rod would just get his damn foot down.

  219. DERP says:

  220. Mike Nitabach says:

    holy crap

  221. Kramerica Industries says:

    Bases loaded, 1 out.

How do they fuck this one up?

  222. Need Pitching says:

way to lean into it ARod

  223. Tom says:

    Cano better take a strike.

    • Tom says:

So the only two hitters to get out were hacking at the first pitch that was close.

      Too much damn “hero ball”

  224. Ken says:

    Clutch arod

  225. The Troll says:

Cano Double Play imminent. The man cannot swing a bat with the bases jacked.

    bases drunk, come on Cano

  230. pat says:

  232. Widget says:

    Triple Steal. Do it!!!!!!!

  233. FIPster Doofus says:

    Seriously, Cano?

  234. Kramerica Industries says:

You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me, Robbie.

    Fucking unreal.

  235. ArchStanton says:

    Good stuff Cano!

  236. Mike Nitabach says:

  237. Ken says:

  240. Greg says:

    In on the hands

  241. RetroRob says:

    Oh, lordie, Robbie.

Take the walk Tex. This guy can’t throw a strike consistently.

  242. Athenian says:

This fucking team is a joke with RISP. HORRIBLE. FUCKING HORRIBLE

  243. DERP says:

    Our two best hitter people!

  244. Kramerica Industries says:

1-28 the last 23 games. You can’t make that shit up.

  245. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Would it kill you to take a strike?

  246. Mike E says:

    Tex is gonna walk.

  247. Widget says:

Fucking Cano. Guy can’t find the damn strike zone.

  248. Mike Axisa says:

At least Tex will take the walk Valverde is trying to give him.

  249. Bunt Gardner says:

    Someone lean into another pitch!

  250. Need Pitching says:

    steal home
    it’s your only hope

  251. Mike Nitabach says:

  252. Mike Nitabach says:

  253. Cuso says:

Take 2 pitches. Not 1. TWO.

  254. FIPster Doofus says:

He’s not throwing three straight strikes now. Take take take.

  255. mike_h says:

come on Tex, lay down a bunt like you said in Spring training

  256. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

    Please balk!

  257. Mike Nitabach says:

    take again

  258. Greg says:

That would have been a strike too.

  259. Karl Krawfid says:

    This team I swear lol

  260. Athenian says:

    Not good.

  261. flamingo says:

  262. pat says:

He’s gonna throw a splitter and make Tex look nasty.

  263. Cuso says:

Ugh. That doesn’t qualify as too close to take.

  264. Kramerica Industries says:

Thank God that was no-where near the zone.

  265. FIPster Doofus says:

    hahaha, Valverde is so bad.

  266. Mike Nitabach says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!

  267. Karl Krawfid says:

    Hell. Yes.

  268. Mike E says:

Jeez Joe Buck, sound a little more excited.

  269. jjyank says:

HUGE walk. Sit down you fucking clown!

  270. flamingo says:

A rally against Valverde = BEST

  271. RetroRob says:

Great, Tex. Robbie could have done that too and they’d have two runs, but we’ll take it.

    • The Troll says:

Watch some jackass swoop in with the whole “fallacy of the pre-determined outcome” flack…

      • RetroRob says:

Fortunately Michael Kay isn’t here. Or maybe he is. He has that night off. I’m sure what he does on his night’s off is post on RAB. Is that you, Michael?!

  272. Cuso says:

Alright birthday boy. Lets do it.

  273. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

  274. Tom says:

    Better take a damn strike

  275. RBC says:

I’m shocked Leyland has stuck with Valverde

  276. 28 this year says:

on the bright side, the Yankees have to be leading the league in bases loaded walks. It is literally the only other outcome other than striking out or popping up.

  277. Kramerica Industries says:

    That was a strike?

  278. pat says:

Are you fucking kidding me with that 1-0 call? Jesus Christ.

  279. Anon says:

    Terrible strike call

  280. The Scheister of Doom says:

Bob wants to call strikes, it’s driving him crazy!

  281. Jose Valverde doing his best Felix Heredia impression

  282. Mike Nitabach says:

Buck and McCarver are fucking shattered because they don’t get to leave now and have some fucking sandwiches. Assholes.

  283. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, gotta make them pay for that now.

  284. Mike Nitabach says:

    HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!! Dumbasse missed it!!!!!!!

  285. Need Pitching says:

make him pay Raul, make him pay

  286. pat says:

  287. flamingo says:

  288. Mike Axisa says:

That’s a huge fucking break. Kill them all Raul.

  289. The Scheister of Doom says:

  290. Athenian says:

Santos! Catches like the Yankees hit with bases loaded.

  291. jjyank says:

When did Luis Castillo start playing catcher for the Tigers?

  292. mike_h says:

Santos did his best Luis Castillo impression

  293. Cuso says:

The Tigers are a mess. Destroy :them please.

  294. Alkaline says:

I think Raul used the Confundus curse..

  295. Mike Nitabach says:

  296. Kramerica Industries says:

    So much for that.

1-10 with RISP tonight. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  297. Karl Krawfid says:

You have to be fucking kidding me? All that and we only got a run on a walk? Jesus Christ.

  298. Mike E says:

    This is absolutely mental.

  299. pat says:

I wonder if that’s a record for most men sent to the plate in one inning and only scoring one run.

  300. Need Pitching says:

this RISP crap has to end at some point, right?

  301. The Scheister of Doom says:

Terrible baseball by both teams. Yeah the Yankees scored but holy shit my heart hurts.

  302. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

    Please win this game.

  303. Athenian says:

This team is abysmal. How the fuck do a collection of overpaid plAyers suck so bad when it is necessary? This is beyond a slump, Girardi’s asinine excuses, I mean cliches, and all the other bullshit from the players. Just embarrassing!

  304. JohnnyC says:

When does Cabrera bat again? That’s how long this game is going. Joe just loves to watch this guy hit.

  305. pat says:

Our lineup just got really shitty.

  306. DT says:

Cano is absolutely Terrible with RISP that is seems unreal

  307. DERP says:

    need new pants

  308. Kramerica Industries says:

I’ve been watching the Yankees, Spurs/Thunder, and Kings/Devils three-way for a good two hours now.

This is quite a life I lead (Jerry Seinfeld voice).

  309. Tom says:

Valverde probably would have put everyone on base that inning if the Yankees let him.

Cano I expect to be hacking; but I couldn’t believe Granderson swung at the 1-0 pitch as wild as Valverde was.

And Bob Davidson should not be allowed to call balls/strikes anymore – just make him a designated balk caller. His zone tonight has just been absurd.

    • DT says:

Granderson actually had a good pitch to hit. Cano didn’t and was inexcusable that he swung at such a terrible pitch.

  310. nsalem says:

This game is starting to remind me of this game from 5 years ago also in Detroit but with a longer rain delay. I think it lasted till 4 am . Hope the outcome is different.

  311. Need Pitching says:

where the fuck was that pitch?

  312. Kevin says:

Cano was the goat in that inning..as he has been for many of the RISP. His bad habits from 08 are showing up in spades.

    • RBC says:

We thought Melky was the bad influence on Cano, yet Cano is now the goat and Melky’s the best batter in the Majors. Go figure.

  313. Need Pitching says:

  314. pat says:

    Nick Fisher?

  315. Mike Axisa says:

Well, at least they put up a fight.

  316. Widget says:

Load the bases so Santos can hit a grand slam. I dare you Phelps.

  317. Kevin says:

Oh look..the Tigers doing what we couldn’t.

  318. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, the Yankees’ goose is likely cooked here.

Gotta hoe for the best, I guess.

  319. Leg-End says:

    Gutsy play by Nick Fissure

  320. Greg says:

Well David Phelps doesnt get to pitch in clutch games anymore

  321. mike_h says:

did Joe Buck just say Phil Coke coming in?

  322. Ken says:

You know it’s going to be some shitty bloop

  323. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Come on, Boone.

  324. Widget says:

    Bose Lovarde

  325. Widget says:

    Bose Lovarde

  326. Karl Krawfid says:

Single is gonna win it. Everyone playing in.

  327. Mike Axisa says:

Ugh, I hate loaded the bases intentionally.

  328. flamingo says:

    I hate intentional walks.

  329. pistol pete says:

Unbelievable bad clutch hitting by the Yankees best players with the game right in their lap.

  330. mike_h says:

  331. flamingo says:

  332. Need Pitching says:

    well that sucked donkey balls

  333. Mike Nitabach says:

    fuuuck ehhh

  334. FIPster Doofus says:

    Fuck off.

  335. Greg says:

In the end loading the bases made no difference

  336. Karl Krawfid says:

Fuck the Yankees man. Same shit damn near every night.

  337. Kramerica Industries says:

    Fuck off Detroit.

  338. pat says:

Hah and Valverde gets the Win. baseball you be so silly sometimes.

  339. Ken says:

Of course they get it with bases loaded. This team is unwatchable

  340. DERP says:

Why couldn’t Miguel Cabrera have killed himself during one of his DUIs?

    jk but I hate him

  341. Leg-End says:

Chalk it up as a RISP loss……again.

  342. RBC says:

  343. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

    Beat Verlander.

  344. DT says:

David Phelps should not have started the inning.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Why shouldn’t he have started that inning? He’s a pitcher on this team. He’s fair game. He got hit. He lost the game. Get back out there and do a better job next time.

      • DT says:

We had better options with Boone starting the inning.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

Sure, but the guy on the mound still has to do his job. If Phelps is going to get opportunities like this moving forward, he has to get the job done.

          • DT says:

True, i believe that we should have exhausted all of our options before going to lesser pitchers. Logan at that point was clearly the better option.

  345. Greg says:

5-4 roadtrip, again which is not bad according to the old adage. However, the Yankees are expected to win the World Series every year and so far the expectations should be lowered considerably

  346. Karl Krawfid says:

Omir Santos hits a 2 run Home run in Fenway to beat papelbon and the Sox, but McCarver thinks this sac fly is the biggest moment of his life.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

McCarver thinks his last trip to the toilet was the biggest moment of his life.

On the other hand, Joe Buck thinks seeing Troy Aikman naked was the biggest in his.

  347. Widget says:

hahahahha. Just pathetic. Sanots is not even a major league level player. The Red Sox dismantled the Tigers, shame we can’t do that same.

  348. Robinson Tilapia says:

The game no one wanted to win ends.

It was going pretty well for all involved until Phelps and Valverde showed up.

  349. Tyler says:

    No more IBBs please.

  350. Athenian says:

Well done boys. Well done. 2008 all over again.

  351. Greg says:

Kings win and this series is over

  352. pistol pete says:

Yankees had a million chances to win this game but just can’t hit when it counts. Very frustrating given the pedigrees of the guys who didn’t come through tonight and for what they are paying them you’d think one would be capable of at least a single when it counts. Now tomorrow we get Verlander against Hughes, nice.

  353. 718 (Bronx) says:

And just like that the Yankees have lose this series, because Hughes and his sorry ass is not beating Verlander.

  354. Kevin says:

Ynaks deserves to lose..they deserve to lose every game from here on out until changes are made.
    28th with the bases loaded…from a $280 million dollar lineup,that’s a disgrace. 1-15 disgrace.

  355. wow says:

    no consistency.

  356. your mom says:

This offense is soooooooooo frustrating to watch. Killing me man, killing me!

  357. Hughes vs Verlander tomorrow. That should go well.

  358. RBC says:

FYI – Post game is on YES right now

  359. Kevin says:

In the same breath..the Tigers weren’t exactly RISP wonders either..Caberra was the difference for them.

    • DT says:

Exactly, it was fail on both ends. But Detriot just had one guy that was totally locked in.

      • JohnnyC says:

And that’s why they chose to throw strikes to him in the 8th. Logical.

        • DT says:

It was dumb. But on the other hand that pitch he took out of the park was not a completely terrible one.

          • JohnnyC says:

Because of Wade’s changeup, he actually is more effective versus lefties. I would’ve unintentionally intentionally walked Cabrera and gone after Fielder. With 2 outs as well.

  360. pat says:

For his career Verlander is 4-3 with a 4.16 ERA. By all means the game is a lock, HAH.

  361. David N says:

I know it’ll be a winning trip, but this road trip does NOT feel like a success.

  362. Tom says:

Yankees apparently weren’t OK with a gift wrapped win from Valverde and instead play “I’m going to be the hero”

Don’t care if the Granderson 1-0 pitch was even an 80mph fastball down the middle…. as wild as Valverde was you have to take a strike in that spot. 1-1 with no out is not the end of the world, take a damn strike.

And Cano is just pitiful. 2HBP, 1BB, 1 gift out from Grandy and he’s hacking before he even stepped in the batter’s box. The only reason he didn’t swing at the first pitch was because it was more than a foot outside and couldn’t reach it.

I think one of the reasons the Yankee hitting is so poor with men on base is they are overly aggressive in hitter counts with men on base. It’s one thing if the guy is around the plate but this guy is only throwing fastballs and is all over the place.

Grandy has a .900 OPS with RISP this year and got a pich right down the middle. Meanwhile Cano on the other hand has a terrible plate approach with RISP .495 OPS(!!!) and an avg at around .100, He swung a ball clearly was too inside.

Joe G is really pissed right now you can tell.

I don’t even know what that means. When all else fails hurl insults? That is a great tactic. Here is a thought, if you sent like me expressing my frustration for a grossly overpaid ineffective team, don’t read it.

Joe has tried everything to make this lineup click and hasn’t been able to find its groove. I have no idea how line these guys up. I’m a huge Cano fan but he has sucked this year especially when it has counted most. Arod is a mere shell of his past, it looks like the steroids have taken their toll. Tex is wildly inconsistent especially given his $23m/yr contract. I love Swisher but he normally stinks when it counts especially in the playoffs. This team needs fixing but given their bad contracts there really is nowhere to go. Next year the only open position is Swishers and the best availavle will be Hamilton and Melky.

Bob Davidson is the worst umpire in the game and MLB should do something about it. Forgetting that he has lost his patience and can’t tolerate any criticism he just flat out can’t umpire any more. The call at first last night when Jeter threw out the runner that dove into first was wrong by three feet. Granderson’s two ball strike calls tonight were awful. Late in the game I think he just got tired and lost concentration. Jeter’s 3 0 pitch was a foot high and he called it a strike. He missed a terrible ball strike call on Ibanez’s last at bat. He doesn’t wait long enough on ball strike calls, calls too quickly and often is just flat wrong. He’s too old and has lost the ability to officiate at this level. These games are too important to worry about his feelings, he needs to be replaced and it can’t come too quickly.

Can you imagine the Mets have a better record than the Yankees, impossible.
