Game 63: The Nation’s Capitol
ByThis is going to be a fun series. The Nationals are very clearly a team on the rise with some of the most exciting young players in the game, and these two clubs come in playing very well. Both the Yankees and Nationals have won six straight and both clubs are in first place, Washington by six in the loss column and New York by one. Their run differentials — +46 and +42 — are nearly identical. Here’s the lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Mark Teixeira
3B Alex Rodriguez
RF Nick Swisher
LF Andruw Jones
C Russell Martin
2B Jayson Nix — Robinson Cano‘s fine, just has terrible numbers vs. Gio Gonzalez (0-for-9, 4 K)
RHP Phil Hughes
Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on My9 locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Nix at 2nd? I mean just start Robbie, no matter how bad his numbers against Gio are.
technically we can replace Girardi with a computer, complete with post game BS scripts and he can come out and yell at an umpire every 45.5 games, or 4 game losing streak. which ever comes first.
The way the two teams are playing, it’s like the irresistible force meeting the immovable object.
If the Yanks take 2-of-3, you’d have to say they’re truly on fire right now. And even losing 2-of-3, to a hot team in their stadium, wouldn’t be disgraceful.
Curious whether Gonzalez is truly transformed, or if he reverts to established ways with the Yankees.
On a bus on my way down to dc. I’m going to the game tomorrow. Pretty excited to see nationals park and pettitte pitch. I went to the game where he pitched against the reds. I wouldn’t mind a repeat of that. Unfortunately I have to deal with sterling tonight.
Wish I could be there this weekend with the RAB guys. One of the very few times I rooted against the Yankees was when they played Shoeless Joe Hardy and the Washington Senators… of course that was fiction! Could never root against the Yankees for real!!
Where you sitting Mike?
i can’t believe he’s not starting cano because of NINE at bats. NINE!
This live and die by the numbers garbage is really starting to piss me off.
This. Especially coming off an off day. Plus, it’s not like we’re playing a last place team like the Red Sox or anything…
Joe loves giving players 2 days off. He’s leveraging yesterday’s off day and giving Cano another. Maybe the ankle is a little bruised too. Not really a bad idea in my opinion.
or Cano isn’t going to play 162 games anyways, so if he’s going to get a day off, doesn’t it make sense to come against a guy he hasn’t had success against instead of someone he’s more likely to have success against?
No Robbie? I don’t care how bad his numbers are it’s dumb to sit your best all round player.
Lou Gehrig never needed days off!
Fire Girardi!!!!!
He isnt going to play every game. Might as well sit him for the pitcher he is 0-9 against
I see nothing wrong with Nix at second, he is one of the best bench men we have, and I am content with that. Besides, why not give Robbie a day off?
CapitAl, not CapitOl.
The back wall behind the catcher looks about 10ft away, bet there’s not too much scoring on wp/pb’s.
Geez, there are Red Sox hats and shirts all fucking over Chicago right now. I’m wearing my Yankee hat all weekend. Nice to see the douchebags get shut out by the worst team in baseball, but hopefully Cash isn’t too blown away by Dempster’s performance that he now pushes harder for him.
Holy Gio… This is gonna be one of those nights. Someone call the trolls out of hiding.
I expected the Yankees to struggle against the Nationals. Yanks are 2-4 all time against the Nats and we’re in their park. I think they will win 1-3.
What happened in 2006 and 2009 is horribly irrelevant.
Yankees likely struggle this weekend because the Nats are a very good team. The fluke series in 2009 couldn’t matter less.
How’s your SSS treatin ya?
OK I have a love hate relationship with Bryce Harper, that catch isn’t helping it.
That catch should play right into it.
Well…at least we don’t have to face Strasburg.
Looks like a tall pitchers mound in DC.
Wow, Hughes got pinched on that walk.
Strike
Especially if the Nats are getting that call
Wow that was a strike.
Wow, the game is barely 10 minutes in and the top of the first is over already…doubleplus ungood?
Gio got to 3-2 on both Jeter and Grandy and struck them out. Tex lined out to center on a semi-diving catch by Harper
Yesnetwork always finds a player on the opposing team to drool over.
Annoying.
As long as it’s Harper they’re really just doing their jobs. He’s the number 1 prospect in all of baseball, and is playing out of his mind in the majors at 19!!
Wondering which Hughes is gonna show up?
Why couldn’t Swisher catch that?
Harper woulda caught that…
#only1/2joking
Hmm. I don’t know about
A:) that pitch selection on 0-2
B:) the way Swish played that
Only 25errors this season… Nuney’s flying helmet owns a nice chunk of those too…
That’s Large from Phil.
Nice first inning by Hughes.
Wow, good job, Phil.
A little more exciting way to get 2ks, but I’ll take it. Thanks Phil!
So far so good Hughes.
So was the 2-0 pitch called a strike to ARod pretty much the same as the 3-2 walk in the bottom of the first?
That’s three 3-2 strikeouts for Gio already.
All on 96 mph fastballs.
he’s upped his game
The box score will show a single and walk but in reality, he got squeezed on the first walk and Swisher didn’t quite help him out either.
Yanks are gonna crush Gio today.
Jayson Nix was pretty overmatched there.
At least Gio is over 40 pitches.
He can rack up as many K’s as he wants so long as he keeps throwing 20 pitches an inning.
At this pace he’s going 5 or 6 (though unfortunately with the pitcher batting in NL parks he has a chance to get a few quick outs)
That’s why the rule for Hughes is, unless your bunting take pitches until the umpire sends you back to the dugout.
Decent inning. Elevated his pitch count.
We’re getting Max Scherzer’d by Gio Gonzalez today…
It’s not even the third inning yet.
Swish is laughing, fire him!
You should not give up a base hit to Flores ever. He’s a crappy hitter
Almost had that.
swisher.. wtf
That’s where Swish is irritating.
Not on the play, but on the laughing afterwards. That could lead to a big inning for all we know – it’s just not the time and place.
People deal with shit differently
Paully strikes out, he destroys a water cooler
Derek Jeter Strikes out, asks the up where it is and goes back to the dugout grimacing
Swisher strikes out, he laughs about it.
They’re all upset, maybe Swish more upset than even Paully, they just show it differently.
Gotta get Flores there, let Geo lead off the next inning.
Do you have to work Monday night, or could you go to the game if I have an xtra ticket ?
Sadly I’m working, thanks for the offer though. I’m probably not going to make it to one game this year, maybe a rare 1pm weekday start, but that’s it.
No prob. If I ever have an xtra for a day game, I’ll let you know.
Hughes can hit folks.
Also he can walk more than Cano.
I’m glad the Yankees are doing well in interleague this year but that doesn’t change how much I hate interleague.
that was a decent hack by hughes..
damn…just missed a HR!
Here comes the crushin’
horrible camera work on that hit
Should’ve tried to bunt for a hit Grandy!
Gio just loves throwing pitches. I’m completely Ok with this.
Gio 2-0 Gonzalez
How the hell did that get through?
MEH ALEX IS GARBAGE!!!! COMPLETELY USELESS!!!!
I’m not too familiar with the Nationals’ bullpen. Should we want to get into it?
All I know about their bullpen is Clippard and Burnett are nasty.
BABIP success
RISP success
NICE
Say it with me. Crushin’ time.
Hooray for seeing eye singles!
A run!
Wow, I didn’t realize Gio’s having such a good year. I guess going to the NL has helped him alot.
PS, Alex just tied Jimmy Foxx for 5th all time on the RBI list.
A-Rod you idiot.
Damn Alex, gotta make sure the ball goes through to home before going to 3rd…
@BloggingBombers
I don’t understand why A-Rod didn’t go to his trademark “Slap the ball out of the fielder’s hand” play right there.
lol, Yankees beat writers are the best
WTF A-Rod. That weak-ass ground ball RBI “single” isn’t redemption enough for you to be a bonehead on the bases.
Brain fart by A Rod Or sac to score the run?
Sac to score run
I’d say both, since I don’t think they had a real chance to get Tex anyways
TOOTBLAN!
ummmm …. range
A-Rod fucking up on all facets of the game now.. great
Except he drove in a run
Except he killed a rally by not having a brain and might have given that run back with his awful D
Except it seems that this board is at the very least split on whether Tex scores if Alex doesn’t try for third.
there was no need to make that turn, that thorw was never going home
A rod giveth& a rod taketh away
Just dumb baserunning… the play is right in front of you and you just give up the out. They also have Gio’s pitch count up and that saves him at least another 2-3 highs stress pitches at a minimum, and possibly a lot more.
I wonder if it was one of those “well I’ll force a cutoff to make sure the guy scores from 2nd”… that seems to be done way too frequently around baseball.
Try getting luckier this inning, assholes.
Bryce Harper is great already. He doesn’t need to be getting that.
Harper, I will officially hate you if Hughes is hurt.
no defense whatsoever.. 2 routine plays that they dont make and it’s a scoring situation for them
How do you figure on the last one?
A pitcher with any type of normal follow through and that play is routine….
Just watch Hughes’ follow through after a fastball – he has no chance at a ball at his feet unless it is hit very slowly.
It wasn’t hit that hard, right at Hughes… he had plenty of time. I guess his follow through played a part in it like Tom here said.
Tex could have been dead at the plate. I don’t have too much issue with getting 2 early runs off Gio.
Can’t make too much of that play.
Live look in for the National’s feed OMG actual analysis on pitch selection!!!
I have it on the Nats feed.. it’s been great so far.
Radio or Television? I could use a break from Ma and Pa Pinstripes if their radio feed is good too.
That ball had a weird flight to it. Off the bat I thought it was an easy out, then once it was in the air I thought it might be gone…
Phil Hughes, Afraid of LaRoche.
Complete this sentence.
An average Nationals fan has been a fan of the Nationals for ________ (amount of time).
1-3 years.
1-3
yearsmonths.I personally started taking an interest in them a couple seasons ago, when they called up Strasburg for the first time, before his elbow exploded.
Awful 0-2 pitch..
Amen. Morse wasn’t smelling his fastball — then they do him a favor that speeds up his bat. Not just a hanger, a bad choice.
fucking 2 strike hits
grumble, grumble, grumble
Hang em Hughes.
Hanging curveball. Despite bad defense, you cant throw that
Huge pitch Hughes.
Now that’s more like it.. nice pitch.
Good comeback
I blame that run on Hughes. You cant hang a curve on 0-2 to batter just coming off the DL
wtf does just coming off the DL have to do with anything???
He’s hasn’t gotten his swing back yet. He hasn’t gotten into a rhythm.
but when is a hung curve ever OK?
When the hitter isn’t a great hitter and is sitting dead red. If you hang a curveball in that situation than they’re usually just frozen and confused.
You don’t need much of a rhythm to hit a hanging curve.
Ummmm… he’s been playing since June 2…
Not just that..
Morse has been playing since June 2 (11 games)
Even if the logic somehow made sense (which of course it doesn’t), at what point is a guy no longer just off the DL?
Calm the ef down
I think the White Sox were leading the AL Central
Gio tweaked something. Saw him grimace in the 1st inning too.
I think it’s time Jones starts hitting against southpaws.. He’s not doing his job on that platoon rotation
Nope. It’s time to find someone else for the lefty mashing role. Maybe the Yanks should see about trading for someone like Jonny Gomes or Ryan Ludwick. Although those alternatives aren’t great to be honest I feel like they’re marginally better. Jones has his one or two moments a year but other than that he’s not getting it done.
Lol, Sterling thinks Joba’s coming back by the All-Star Break.
In 1994, the Texas Rangers were leading the AL West at 52-62. My lord
Fact: Western Baseball Divisions will always be terrible.
God Damn!
damn, that makes it 3 outs that were hard hit out of 11..
Nix, please get on base here, let Hughes end this inning so he doesn’t lead off the 5th.
Or you can, you know, do that.
Horseshit! Teddy Roosevelt should win every damn time.
Is it just me, or has every pitch this AB been a strike?
Nats broadcast just showed a guy in the stands with an Ibanez jersey.
Matt Vasgershian has mentioned repeatedly on MLB network that the Yankees are one of the teams “most” hurt by the loss of the DH.
That’s just clueless. They’re probably one of the 3 least hurt by the loss. They don’t have a full-time DH. They don’t have to bench someone who would otherwise play. See Red Sox, White Sox, Royals, Rangers, Angels, etc.
Just dumb generalizations once again about the Yankees by MSM.
I would say the Red Sox are more hurt because they are forced to use Papi in the infield
Ortiz as an infielder >>>>>>>>>>>>Gonzalez as an outfielder.
Gonzo as an outfielder>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Youkilis as an outfielder. I went to a game 2 years ago vs the Sox that Youk played the outfield. It was laughable.
haha i guess I used to many ‘greater thans’ it should end >>>Youkilis as an outfielder.
Well that acts as a side effect of playing Ortiz at first
The Red Sox are definatley the most affected.
Case in point: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play......8;c_id=mlb
The Red Sox continued use of Gonzalez in right field is an embarrassment. Just waiting for him to injure himself. You have to protect your highest paid player. If that means sitting him down you do it. Besides, he could probably use a day or two off. He’s been ass all season.
In my mind it has to be the Angels, Red Sox, and White Sox.
Royals (Butler) Twins (have to play both Mayer & Morneau in field) Indians (Hafner) Tigers (forced to play Delmon in field)
You’re correct with the 3 most…but there are so many others that the Yankees should just about be last on the list. Even the A’s (Johnny gomes) & Rays (matsui or Luke Scott) are more affected than the Yanks.
If this was a couple years ago when we had Sheff, Giambi, Matsui, and Posada on the team and in the line-up everyday, I’d agree with Matt, but he’s a few years late.
Yep. Just like last inning when he claimed “the days of the homegrown Yankee are long past. You have Pettitte and Jeter and that’s about it.”
Jayson Cano. what a play.
Great play by Nixxxxxxx
Cano who?!?!?!
Nice play, both ends.
I thought Cano was getting the night off?
Hughes must have a million swing and misses.
if what they just said on MLB Network about Andy helping Hughes, makes the signing of Pettitte even better.
Phil has certainly looked more like the promise he should be than the pitcher that shot his wad by the 4th inning, he was.
Did Kenny forget that Ryan played with the Astros for awhile as well in the National League?
I just realized that I forgot to change my handle back. I’m sorry, people.
Well, anytime Hughes is on the mound, pining for Phelps’ plane to Tampa to be delayed is inevitible…
6 consecutive outs since that brain fart by A-Rod..thats how you kill rallies!
Think it was a glove fart.
That and home runs.
So far the Yankees have played Gonzalez well. They took advantage of their one true golden opportunity to score runs, they’ve made him throw alot of pitches.
LOL @ the Mets, nice of them to turn back into pumpkins after manhandling the rest of the AL East
Poor Mets fans
Nice 3rd strike on Lobarndozzi (sp?). Right at the eyes… That is a confident pitcher at work.
Where was that?
I mean, that was one of the best pitches Hughes has thrown all year.
WOAH Were did that miss?
Hughes got to be careful. Don’t want to show up the ump.
Hughes on a roll!
You know a call is bad When Sterling is going on and on about it. He never complains about the strike zone.
Phil Phuckin’ Hughes…
Leiter is exactly right. Hughes didnt get that call because Martin was set up way outside. But in the end, no harm, no foul
What happened to Ryan Zimmerman? That’s a long contract if this is the player he is.
WOW. Great inning by Phil. I think that settles it, Petitte can never leave…
Bring Pettitte and Mo back to work in the bullpen when they retire. Especially Mo
I don’t know how much help Mo could actually be. He’s been showing people how he throws the cutter for literally a decade and nobody had been able to duplicate it yet.
He could also teach the young kids in pitching under pressure.
His attitude could rub off on them
You know who I think would make a great pitching coach? David Cone.
“Dont worry about this outing man, your BaBIP has unreasonably high. I know it will come down soon”
Haha, this.
He doesn’t even know how he does it, he’s said so himself more than once…
I like how Hughes starts have become watchable, or dare I say, enjoyable, again.
But he hasn’t allowed a home run yet.
Time is running out on that…
SHHHH!!! Don’t do that either!!
Shhh. Don’t do that. They’re listening.
was just about to post the same thing
he used to be root canal
Ideal scenario would be to have Hughes pitch the sixth and then pinch hit him in the seventh and go to the pen
And if it hasn’t been mentioned, let me be the first to say it.
RA Dickey got fucked. Pain & simple. The Commish does not want to be shown up by bad score keeping, but that was an error.
Kid behind the plate with a Nats shirt and a Yankee Jersey.
Gangsta.
Gonzalez going to 3-2 on almost everyone and getting batters out. Argh.
Gonzalez has been getting his K’s and the Yankees have been a bit BaBip f***ed in this game
Gio was at 78 pitches through 4, kind of disappointed they couldn’t knock him out after 6.
Gotta be done now.
John Sterling talking about OBP. I love this game.
What up RAB! Greetings from the game! Shaping up to be a good one so far. Phil has looked pretty sharp to me. Hope the game thread is as pleasant as the weather/game here in DC!
I hope you brought your cookies to Washington
Haha, I think he lives in Washington now. Lets hope he brought them to the ball park.
Damn you’re right. Sorry man
Blue Jay pitchers dropping like flies…
Hutchinson left the game tonight with elbow soreness in the first. Drabek tore his UCL the other day and is likely headed for a 2nd TJ surgery and Morrow left a few days back with an oblique strain and I think is on the DL.
That was almost the streak continuer
THROW HIM A CHANGEUP
throw an offspeed pitch damnit.
Mitch Williams’ glove looks like a 4 year olds tee ball glove…
For the love of God. Strike Morse out.
THERE YOU GO
Could’ve thrown that 5 pitches ago.
he probably takes it 5 pitches ago though …
Thank God DRob is back.
Might need an 8/9 outing tonight, with another close game on hand…
What happened to Phil’s cutter?
I think he ditched it
Thank god too, it was nothing more than a slightly below average pitch, but he loved it sooo much.
Don’t mess with a streak.
That Morse at-bat seemed to flash Phil back to 2011/late 2010.
And will probably make this his last inning.
It was probably going to be his last inning anyway
I think if he had gotten Morse out earlier then maybe you go batter to batter with Hughes in the 7th.
That’s true.
Not necessarily. He had two strikes on Morse at about 91 pitches. A one-two pitch out to follow, he’d have started the 7th, anyway.
might’ve PH for him in the 7th if his spot came up regardless, depending on the situation
bus home time, keep the lead/expand it boys!
no obligatory HR today
nice job overall for Phil (still needs to be a little more efficient, though)
Now let’s hope they bring in Lidge.
wish granted
I love that Lidge guy. LOL
Assuming Phil’s night is over – streak busted.
Good solid outing for Hughes.
Roll Over !
Haha, gotta love those groundballs with eyes.
36% strikeout rate today. 50% of balls in play on the ground. Great job by Phil.
And just abundant confidence and overflowing presence on the mound.
Last time we saw Lidge was the ’09 Series, am I right?
Wise move.
Lidge just had Johnny Damon flashbacks
Damn you.
They didn’t even make a move toward 2nd on that steal?
That was a “Wise” Decision to steal a base.
A-Rod ended Lidges greatest back in 2009.
greatness***
Lidge was absolute shit all throughout 2009.
We got to have this game. Beating Gio would be so huge. Just stop putting Lombardozzi on in front of Harper and I think we will be good.
Wise should consider 3rd…. Lidge is going to be pumping in sliders with 2 strikes
Now that the lefty is out, why not pinch hit Cano for Nix next?
Cano to pinch hit for Hughes?
here comes the bunt
why not PH Cano?
There are two things Girardi can do. He can PH Cano for Nix or hit Nix and PH Cano for Hughes and then double switch
intentional walk here
Forces the Nationals to walk Cano and load the bases
Well, in closing, Hughes has strung together another strong outing. Good for him…
Pussies!
O/U 1.5 pitches for Jeter to hit into a rally-killing DP?
I take the slight over, with 2.
Would have used Chavez or Ibanez there.
If they walk them, then he could have done something real gutsy… pinch hit Cano for Jeter (and move Nix to SS)
never would happen, even if it might be the right move.
there is no way they would do that.
No way Girardi would have done it.
But it would have been the right move.
it’ll be a cold day in hell before Joey G would do that
What? Why?
Gotta get a SF at least
This plan has been fucked since Jump Street.
That’s why you should have PH Cano for Nix. Give him a chance to drive one in the gap and widen this lead.
that worked out well!
Well, that worked out.
Would not have turned two on that
Haha
Sweet!!
I’ll take that all day, everyday.
Clutch forced error!!!!
Tack on runs? Hits with runners in scoring position?
Unfortunately there’s no way they hang on to win unless someone hits a HR.
It would be fitting if they do.
First Hughes start without giving up a HR. First Yankee win without hitting HR.
Great Yankee crowd at the park tonight huh
Ian Desmond, more like E-an Desmond, AMIRITE?
it’s pronounced EEE-an!
tip your waitress…
Well done. Stayed out of the DP and got a couple runs.
The Nats bullpen really sucks.
But Matt Vaskurgen just told me they have been really good last week agains the Red Sox and Blue Jays….
Pfffffffffffttttttttt……. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!
Sorry, I tried to keep a straight face
REGRESSION
Grandy the best
oppo double off a lefty. awesome.
RISPnonfail!!!!!
No evil home runs either!!
Hooray for flood gates blowing open!!!
50% off pizza for everyone… at least in NY
50% off “pizza”
/pizzasnob
Denzel says,”Game over.”
YEAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Gios head looks like it MIT explode…
So how many games do we win if we are in the NL? I think about 140 is a pretty conservative number.
nAAAAtional league
too many homers!!!!!
wait…
A Rod can slay a rally like no other….
to be fair, the rally was basically over.
Fuck being fair to A Rod… He is boning Stacy Keebler and making $30m a year.
good point
wait, what?
wrong wrestler
Meh, whos to say. I thought it was Chyna for a while there. You know, on account of the muscular girl situation and all…
Or…. Wait for it….
In memory of Madonna, the Fabulous Moolah!!!!
I don’t understand why it matters if the Yanks win without scoring a homer.
The thinking is that in the playoffs you are less likely to homer because you are going against great pitchers.
The thinking is wrong. A slightly higher percentage of runs scored in the post-season is scored on home runs than in the regular season.
This is because although the good starting pitching allows fewer HR per game than average pitching, they allow even fewer long sequence rallies.
because they haven’t won a game this year in which they didn’t hit a HR
Seriously. Hits are hits, runs are runs, and wins are wins.
Yogi?
Vagina Vagina Vagina…just exercising my right to Free Speech
If I were Joe, I would get Robertson some work in this game just to get him back in the swing of things
That, and get Freddy some work.
I was thinking that myself… Pitch him the 8th regardless. Boone to the 9th
Yes
Or pitch Robertson in the ninth. Doesnt really matter. Just get him in
Whatevs… Agreed, get him some work
Eppley killing his GB%
Meh. Those outs in the air just mean that they’re trying extra hard to elevate it and not ground out since they probably read the scouting reports.
Yeah, that will earn you a trip to Scranton (Albany, Syracuse, Albania, Kalamazoo, wherever the Travelling Willburrys end up hanging their hats today)
This man Tex can play some D.
Nice play Tex.
Looked a lot more impressive real time. The slow mo replay made it look less impressive.
Have Eppley/Garcia finish this off. Pitch Robertson tomorrow or Sunday no matter what.
D-Rob for the 8th, Freddy for the 9th.
Winning without HR’s?
A Hughes start without a HR?
Eppley recording 3 outs without a GB?
I’m afraid if I step outside I might get hit by lightning.
First 3 lines sounded like the preamble to the old Batman TV series (probably on before you were born.)
TWAP!
BANG!
KAPOWZIE!!
Holy Philbert Robin.
WHAT’S THIS?!!!!
Nice… and sadly no (I think)…
Tom Gorzelanny = White Flag
Beat these fuckers!!!
Wow, Seatptle has a TEAM OBP of .297…. That is pretty awesome.
Read ‘Seattle’…
Amazing when they have the reincarnation of Babe Ruth.
More awesome?
That actually is an improvement over last year (.292)
That is the Jesus Montero effect.
I read that as “Seatpie” and couldn’t stop laughing. Fitting name for Seattle.
Sterling just told me that you have to actually watch the games, and not just rely on stats.
You silly STATHEADS! You don’t even watch the games!
Yeah… He’s just saying that to back up his YCPBB theory… That’s what ‘the man’ would want you to think. Statsz 4 lyfeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen, Phil Phucking Hughes!
Hughes with 22 swings and misses today. Holy fucking shit.
Seven in a ROW!!!!
Oh, K on Harper on 3 pitches Rapada !!!!!!!!!
I got your Rookie of the Year right here pal!
Dont worry Bryce. We’ll get you somehow
I’ll never forgive Ryan Zimmerman for destroying Chien-Ming Wang.
Yes, I blame him.
When he ran down the third base line and ruined his career with a leg pull?
Broken foot, no?
Yeah, foot. That was horrible.
I remember he hit a big home run off of us when they played in RFK
Was it Wang?
Yeah, the Yanks were leading 2-1 in the ninth, and Rivera had gotten hit hard the night before and was unavailable. Torre tried to let Wang get the complete game, and Zimmerman hit a 2-run shot off him to win the game.
Just strike out one of the best players in baseball on three pitchers. nbd.
DRob sighting!
Yes !!!!
Wow, Harper, Rapada just “clowned you, bro”
New 7-9-9 formula Eppley-Rapada-Garcia?
Woah… A non broken Zimmerman would have sen that one to The parking lot
I almost feel bad for Freddy. He can’t even get into a game with a five run lead against the bottom of a shitty lineup.
Don’t feel bad, he’s making 4.5M and the only pressure he faces is a long line at Starbucks when he gets sent out for Lattes.
Andrelton Simmons is doing some fine work.
Wow, Rapada doing werk!!!
Luis Ayala and Cory Wade last year, Clay Rapada and Cody Eppley this year, Chad Gaudin and Dustin Moseley in 2010.
Aaron Small anyone?
Shawn Chacon too
Edwar Ramirez.
Jose Veras.
Sergio Mitre. Boom.
Gaudin and Moseley were both pretty bad. Cash’s 2010 bullpen finding was Kerry Wood.
Oh yeah. Forgot Kerry Wood
clay RAPADA with a lockdown inning?
we’re entering “fish that ate pittsburgh” territory
No chance you’re pulling a Cano on Cano.
I hate to brag, but I started Andrelton Simmons in The Game today.
Gorzalanny looks like John Lackeys younger fatter homosexual brother… Jus sayin
2 innings late on the Jeter GIDP stuff, I see.
I’m still allowed to be annoyed by Jeter’s DP tendencies, even when the team’s doing great.
It’s my right as an American.
ewww Jeter.
So…. can someone tell me the different between NEW (very good) Highes and OLD (frustrating, inconsistant, no too good) Hughes?
It seems he’s throwing more strikes, not nibbling but challenging. Is that it?
Velocity is better
he definitely seems more aggressive. It also seems like he’s phased out his shitty cutter.
I think it’s confidence. He looks like a guy who will Challenge a hitter now, go upstairs or drop a hook on two strikes… He was not doing that a month ago.
I think he is also throwing the fastball down in the zone a bit more. I think this makes his fastball up a bit more effective as batters have to respect the fastball down.
although i don’t quite get it, i’m still unexplainably laughing.
well there goes the no HR win
Damn it Grandy.
GRANDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY GRANDY!
Another hit off a lefty.
Yankees suck. They can’t win without hitting a HR.
We wouldn’t have been able to win this ballgame without that home run.
This is why that whole meme is stupid.
exactly
Damn. A home-run. Clearly we’re screwed in the playoffs.
We just can’t win unless we hit a home run.
Off topic, but….
Don’t look now, but Trever Plouffe leads the Twins in Home Runs. How’s Mauers contract look now?
A little worse than A-Rods
how does he find time to play baseball and send me obama e-mails?
His smartphone has 4g?
Curtis extends the narrative.
Awesome.
I am listening to the Nats broadcast. The play-by-play guy is really good. Anyone else listening?
Get Hughes back out there and tell him to give up a homer. KEEP THE STREAK ALIVE.
Still can’t win a game without a HR.
/Marchandneedssomethingtowriteabout
carlos pena with zero at-bats and 4 runs scored tonight
ycpb
The Marlins are sucking big time right now.
Run differential taking it more and more on the chin the past few nights.
Hahah.
seriously
zambrano due to punch ozzie any second
Funny, I had June 20th in the pool.
NL East…. It’s faaaaaaaaaantastic!
This is clearly unsustainable and not a playoff team.
Clearly…
Unquestionably.
Indubitably!
Hi D-Rob!
High Socks are back!
He’s Baaaaaaack!!!!!
This is why you put him in now. Let him get this stuff out of his system. Great move by Girardi
So, I saw Derek’s 2-run infield single/throwing error on my phone, but how’d we get from 4-1 to 7-1? I’m not complaining, just curious.
PS, good move putting Robertson in a low pressure situation first game back.
Grandy hit a 2 run double and a solo homer in his next AB.
Granderson double, Granderson double
I mean double, then homer
2 run double by Grandy in that same inning.
And the obligatory HR by Grandy in the top of the ninth
So this team still clearly cannot win without hitting a homerun. God we’re screwed come playoff time against the likes of Verlander and Price…
20 minutes ago called, they want their played out meme back…
Haha, Try 3 seasons ago called =P
END THIS FUCKER NOW!
yea hurry up, finish this before Sale/Kershaw starts
Was there really a need for Desmond to do that?
O’neill rule possibly in play here.
Runner on third? Right where Robertson wants them…
Wonder when Freddy pitches next?
Irrelevant run. END THIS!
Martin Prado just made a nasty play.
FINISH HIM
Typical Robertson appearance.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SEVEN IN A ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YANKS KICK FUCKING ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is this Plouffe-sanity? 2 more taters for a Trevor tonight.
A little rust is to be expected. I’d give him another one or two low leverage appearances before putting him back into the 8th inning. As much as I dislike it MFIKY has been really good as the closer, so why fix something that isn’t broken?
Can you guys guess who the last guy to record a save against the Yankees is?
Fuentes?
Nope.
Alroldis
Yep. May 20th. Pretty hard to believe.
O wait. Frieri right?
Was it Sean Marshall?
Aroldis was my second guess. Somebody from the Reds
Soriano has nine saves since the last guy got a save against the Yankees.
Solid game – did not expect Hughes to outpitch Gio and thought they’d have to win it against the pen, but Hughes was impressive.
The Yanks are clearly among the top four teams in MLB right now: Yanks, Angels, White Sox, and Dodgers.
So, obviously the Yankees could hardly be doing any better in inter-league, but…doesn’t it seem a bit of a gyp they don’t get to play the Marlins, the way Miami’s absolutely lying down for the rest of the East?
The National league is our bitch.
Kill those fucks!
If you look closer you’d see it’s spelled NAAAAtional league.
Man, I look forward to Hughes’s starts now. Its so nice seeing him pitch well. Hes rewarding Cash$ for sticking with him.
Yup.
Hughes is like Cashmans first time.
By that I mean the first product of Cashman having more control over the entire organization.
That….is an awesome point. I’d never thought about it that way, but you’re totally right.
Our worst pitcher just beat one of the best pitchers in baseball this year.
Don’t forget him out-pitching Verlander.
Kershaw gave up a 2 run homer to Adam Dunn in the first 2-0 white Sox. That game could be over
i’m happy for adam dunn
last season was tough to watch
Pettitte vs. Zimmermann tomorrow.
Keep it going
hughes has been good for over a month…
1 bad game versus the Angels else he has been very good.
And you guys thought the Yanks were kaput without Mariano….
WOOOOOHOOOO Braves!!!!! Extend the division lead!!!
