This is going to be a fun series. The Nationals are very clearly a team on the rise with some of the most exciting young players in the game, and these two clubs come in playing very well. Both the Yankees and Nationals have won six straight and both clubs are in first place, Washington by six in the loss column and New York by one. Their run differentials — +46 and +42 — are nearly identical. Here’s the lineup…

Nix at 2nd? I mean just start Robbie, no matter how bad his numbers against Gio are.
technically we can replace Girardi with a computer, complete with post game BS scripts and he can come out and yell at an umpire every 45.5 games, or 4 game losing streak. which ever comes first.
The way the two teams are playing, it’s like the irresistible force meeting the immovable object.
If the Yanks take 2-of-3, you’d have to say they’re truly on fire right now. And even losing 2-of-3, to a hot team in their stadium, wouldn’t be disgraceful.
Curious whether Gonzalez is truly transformed, or if he reverts to established ways with the Yankees.
On a bus on my way down to dc. I’m going to the game tomorrow. Pretty excited to see nationals park and pettitte pitch. I went to the game where he pitched against the reds. I wouldn’t mind a repeat of that. Unfortunately I have to deal with sterling tonight.
Wish I could be there this weekend with the RAB guys. One of the very few times I rooted against the Yankees was when they played Shoeless Joe Hardy and the Washington Senators… of course that was fiction! Could never root against the Yankees for real!!

or Cano isn’t going to play 162 games anyways, so if he’s going to get a day off, doesn’t it make sense to come against a guy he hasn’t had success against instead of someone he’s more likely to have success against?

I expected the Yankees to struggle against the Nationals. Yanks are 2-4 all time against the Nats and we’re in their park. I think they will win 1-3.

Yankees likely struggle this weekend because the Nats are a very good team. The fluke series in 2009 couldn’t matter less.

At least Gio is over 40 pitches.
He can rack up as many K’s as he wants so long as he keeps throwing 20 pitches an inning.
At this pace he’s going 5 or 6 (though unfortunately with the pitcher batting in NL parks he has a chance to get a few quick outs)
That’s why the rule for Hughes is, unless your bunting take pitches until the umpire sends you back to the dugout.

Just dumb baserunning… the play is right in front of you and you just give up the out. They also have Gio’s pitch count up and that saves him at least another 2-3 highs stress pitches at a minimum, and possibly a lot more.
I wonder if it was one of those “well I’ll force a cutoff to make sure the guy scores from 2nd”… that seems to be done way too frequently around baseball.

A pitcher with any type of normal follow through and that play is routine….
Just watch Hughes’ follow through after a fastball – he has no chance at a ball at his feet unless it is hit very slowly.

That’s just clueless. They’re probably one of the 3 least hurt by the loss. They don’t have a full-time DH. They don’t have to bench someone who would otherwise play. See Red Sox, White Sox, Royals, Rangers, Angels, etc.
