Game 73: A Big Test(s)
By
Dewayne Wise‘s bunt turned the season around. (REUTERS/Adam Hunger)
Tonight’s game will be an interesting test for both the offense and Phil Hughes. The homer-happy offense will have to deal with Justin Masterson and his turbo-sinker, which is the reason why he has the lowest homerun rate (0.52 HR/9) in the AL since the start of last season. Hughes will have to face an Indians’ lineup featuring seven left-handed batters and two switch-hitters. Phil has held righties to a .308 wOBA in his career but lefties have gotten him for a .337 wOBA. It’s worth noting that he has a (quiet massive) reverse-split this season. Here’s the starting lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
DH Raul Ibanez
LF Dewayne Wise
C Chris Stewart
RHP Phil Hughes
Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on My9. Enjoy.
HOPE Week: Chad Jennings has the details on today’s HOPE Week event, which focuses on 48-year-old Jorge Munoz and his non-profit organization that distributes hot meals to New Yorkers in need.
Russell Martin Update: Martin (back) is going to take batting practice today and if that goes well, he’ll start behind the plate tomorrow. Hooray for that.
Brett Gardner Update: Gardner (elbow) will take some dry swings next week when the team is in Tampa to play the Rays. Joe Girardi said a return before the All-Star break is unrealistic and that late-July is more likely.

This is Dewayne Wise’s game to win.
Wisey is doing a fine job.
- Joe Girardi
Wisey is a smart player
-Yogi
However the Indians are not a homer happy lineup.
They are 14 out of 16 in the AL in home runs with 60.
Their leader in homers is Jason Kipnis with 11.
True. But there are 7 lefties. It’s the Dan Johnson effect.
And that is where the reverse split comes into play that Axisa mentioned. Lefties are only hitting .200 off of him
Happy 38 Derek. 4 for 4 and you’ll pass Ripken!
Why so conservative? 5-5.
RH extreme ground ball pitcher on the mound?
maybe 5-5 in groundouts
and as I post that reply, I look and see Jeter was a career .400 hitter against Masterson
Wow, that guy got laid off in December and he’s still delivering meals to people?
Well that’s enough to make me shut up about getting laid off. Though the only bad thing about that is the loss of health care coverage come September, but still. This guys makes me look like a whiny 1 percenter.
I like Wise getting another start. Not just because of his night last night, but because with the exception of Santana the Indians approach will be to pepper LF.
You get the feeling big stein would hire the guy to drive the yankees bus.
“I don’t always star in LF, but when I do, I go 2-3 with a homer and a triple….”
The Most Interesting 4OF in the Universe
Start’
Thanks for fucking up a great meme, iPad….
Happy Birthday to Derek Jeter. If I had the chance I’d ask him what it was like playing with no glove or helmet back in the day.
Or banging starlets sans Jimmy hats
RAB trivia question: who are the only two Yankees that have Olympic medals (they’re both bronze)?
Nix is definitely one.
Good call, Nix got one in 2008 and Kuroda got one in 2004
Ibanez is the other, but his is for Chariot Racing….
#oldguy
haha a-rod’s centaur could probably win equestrian. i had forgotten nix was on the 2008 team and i figured it was interesting given baseball isnt in the games anymore
Am I right in being a bit worried with Hughes pitching at home against a lefty heavy lineup? At least 2 homers probably..
Oh, it’s nice out tonight John Sterling? ::moves closer to open window::
No, it is in fact BE-YOUUUUUUUUU-tiful…
Classic Hughes. 0-2 to walk
0-2 to a walk… bad Hughes in the house
Hooray, the lead off walk. My favorite way to start a game…
Setting the table, baby… 6-4-3 right here…
Hiroki has to be the other
Sterling just said Kipnis would have to be the favorite for rookie of the year…Has he never heard of Mike Trout?
Suzyn just googled it and gave him Trout… They are great.
How many PA’s are needed before your rookie status is gone. Trout had 123 last year
130.
So he’s just going to sneak in there
130 ABs
Awesome, snuck under the radar.
MLB declared Trout a rookie… he had some weird service time accumulation last year (in addition to PA’s I think 45 or 50 days on the 25man roster also makes you ineligible)
Trout had some recall to the roster after being sent down that was within the 10 day window (which you can do with a case of injury), but technically all that time is retroactively called service time (including the less than 10 days in the minors).
So he had I think 53 or 55 days which would normally make him ineligible, but then MLB ruled the time in the minors between the stints on the major league roster would not be considered service time (even though the CBA says it is).
Also, everyone in New England wants to remind you that Wil Middlebrooks walks on water and heals lepers on the Red Sox’s off days….
Plenty of us Yankee fans on New England’s west coast.
When I say ‘everyone in New England’, I of course don’t mean you, me or Brian (Brian and I are in NH)….
It’s a generalization, because you know as much as I do that I am only 1/2 joking…
Great fun being here when the Sawks struggle isn’t it?
It’s like Disneyland, Las Vegas and a train wreck all rolled into one…
Another error tonight – love it.
Did they ‘YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUK’ again? Too goddam funny, the Boston Sports Radio guys were having a field day with that today.
Will Middlebrooks = the new Rudy Pemberton
Man I am a minute slow tonight
Ok… So itll be one of those Phil nights… I am ok with that…
This should be interesting – Yanks have never hit a homer against Justin Masterson (I believe as a starter)
he really needs a week off
A few days
Yesterday I expected the Yankees to get 2-3. This is the one they should drop, so if we win this, its a bonus
Jeter goes yard tonight i am calling it
Yuck… Bowling ball sinker.
Was giving up Masterson and Hagadone worth a year and a half of V-Mart and Matt Barnes for the Sox?
Hind sight. They shoulda kept V Mart.
Cano took forever to get down the line…
Not a fast guy. He is better off hitting it 420ft and jogging
agreed
Lazy dominican
Poor Marlins. 5-0 Cardinals in the first.
When do the Yankees play them again? (gotta love unbalanced interleague!)
That new stadium is going to have a hard time to pay it off.
Nah, sell Goya some more advertising space and tell Ozzie to say some more stupid shit… They’ll get the attendance up.
They can have takis night
Tonight might be either a Zambrano or Guillen meltdown – so good in May and so bad in June.
Wait… Toronto signed Aaron Laffey AND Jamie Moyer?
Awesome. And then there were 4…
Catcher won’t need a glove.
Yikes… Those pop flys are getting poppier as the game goes on… Trending backwards
I miss johnny daman
And my Old job.
-Kim Jones
Jones is with the NFL Network now. I highly doubt she misses YES.
Following online – is Hughes actually working down in the zone? And occasionally inside to lefties?
If so, that is a real good sign… he was working down a lot more during his good stretch and in his last start pretty much everything was up in the zone. He still can get his outs up in the zone, but he needs to work down occasionally to keep hitters honest.
Come on Wise! Get on base and clear the pitcher’s spot in the lineup
First thought: “Aren’t they in Yankee Sta….”
Second thought: “Heh, good one”
hey look at that, we are getting baserunners… now the pitcher spot!
Pinch hit CC…
#only1/2joking
Come on chris, time for one of your ridiculous well timed hits.
Well done Chris…Well done.
Our new gritty player DW.
wow, just wow
Swing the damn bat Stew.
Nah, more exciting when you piss away 2 strikes first…
Really? I’m not sure I’d ever say that…
So can Jeter catch Cal on his birthday? just needs 2 more hits right?
wow, really? 2 bunts?
Bunting with two outs?
Bring back blue eyes
I don’t like bunting here, because you wanna run up the pitch count on this sinker baller. It’ll pay dividends later.
He makes Martin look like Joey Votto
His swings are gross
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!
Haha, so Chris Stewart.
clutchest weak contact EVER!!!
HE DROPPED IT
AWESOME!
Fuckin Stewart. BALLS!!
lmfao
That was the most amazing way to score a run
CHRIS STEWART MFERS!!!!
Chris Stewart has one of the ugliest swings I’ve ever seen in the big leagues…….yet manages to continue to do that
That was a timely single.
Chris Stewart knows where all of you live, by the way
Stewie
Better to be lucky than good.
the Indians announcers are getting very pissed
The ball looked fair when it hit his glove.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa???? Bizarro week in NYS… Wise is hitting like a boss and Chris Stewart is getting clutch hits at a Melkian pace…
Cats chasing dogs man, cats chasing dogs…
Now the Indians announcers are claiming the Yankees are getting calls because they are in Yankee stadium
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Justin gives Derek a Birthday present.
I didn’t give him anything!
I know what you meant. I just can’t help responding to my own name.
2-2 with RISP tonight
Neither of which have gotten out of the infield
HAHAHAHA I am almost embarrassed at this “rally”. Almost.
Wow, Masterson is not having any BABIP luck out there
Wow… This is a strange inning. You can take your too many homers and shove them up your ass, I suppose…
This small ball crap is never gonna work in the playoffs.
Jeter with an athim ball
That last pitch looked hittable.
When you’re 0 for your last 14 of course they call that 1-1 pitch a strike. SMH.
And of course you come through. This is sexy.
YEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3-for-3 with RISP bitches
#toomanynon-homers!
3-3!
look at that! 3-3 with RISP, grandy going the other way… too much awesomeness right now
Oh boy… This is fun!
Is this how Mets fans usually feel with 2 outs and RISP?
lol, yes
too many homers? Ha!
NPORISPH
4 straight 2 out hits. Imagine that.
Winning with small ball, finally!!
I’d much rather Grandy go yard there.
The NL has a sense of pride right now…
BABIP ftw!
Way to beef up the RISP hit count!
ZOMG RISPHITS
!!!!!!!!!!1one
The yankees can only score with the HR
He’s gotten five outs and is over 50 pitches. Amazing.
the problem is that if we end up winning this with singles, the media will ask where our power went and how it just wasn’t sustainable.
This. ‘All the singles in the world won’t get you over the hump in October’
Mark Feinsand was on The Herd Monday morning saying all that “the Yanks may do fine in the regular season with the long ball, but against good pitchers in the post-season, blah, blah bullshit”. I am going to listen very carefully to what he writes or says tomorrow if the Yanks do end up winning with singles.
It’ll never happen. They’ll hit 4 home runs off the pen tonight and feed the fire
Masterson already at 55 pitches through 2…that’s nice
pitches 1 and 2 to A-Rod were precisely in the middle of the plate but he didnt swing..
Maybe because they started in the left handed batters box?
The second one he should have swung at.
The first one had good movement.
I sense you are nitpicking
Hmmmmm, they’re getting hits with runners on, what can I complain about next?
The answer is obviously “A Rods fault”…. hummingbirds job is to figure out the question…
“The Yankees are never going to make the playoffs like this…great pitchers don’t allow extended rallies, you need to be able to hit one out of the park every so often.” Francesa tomorrow.
ANDY PETTITTE IS…
A STAATING PITCHA!!!
What a great two out rally
Wow, that was pretty sweet. Should be into that abortion of a bullpen before long…
And the girardi love for stewie has reached the mitre stage.
Should have started an injured Martin.
Shhhhhhhhhhhh…, you’re ruining the narrative!
Meaning we will not upgrade the back up catcher this year.
yep, crappy Hughes (or real Hughes)
nope… crappy Hughes gives up HR’s, not ground balls
phew… that was a GOOD escape
Weak ground balls. Wish that was crappy Hughes.
Double Play!
2 on, no outs, Choo up… Mad worried
Thank you MLB At Bat 12 for being a minute behind….
phil hughes, fly ball pitcher
Hughes’ curve ball to Choo had a nasty factor of 100!!!
He had to spit on that ball. lol. I have never seen 100 mark on nasty factor. Damn it.
Check this out.
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-.....at841.png/
3rd inning
3rd batter
Haha, I missed, I’ve never seen a pitch over like 85. That’s impressive.
Check this out.
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-.....at841.png/
that was ibanez graceful, right there
looks like a gold glover in the box score
Swish has been KILLIN’ it in right these past two days.
Hai guys!
But wait… Trolls came through here a few weeks ago and told me Swisher was shit defensively…
/confused
Ugh. Trolls trump everything. MY B.
He only makes good plays in garbage time.
Yeah, that too…
You’re exactly right. Even when they count for an out… do they actually matter? Answer: no. Garbage time is all the time for the Swish man.
trolololo
I’d like a win extra-rispy please.
Robbie just never hustles out of the box on those groundouts.
I lost the plot here: whose glasses are they making fun of???
Hah, Paulie used to “drop” a lot of helmets in his day. Also bats, coolers, gloves, clubhouse doors etc.
Yankees need to realize trying to pull a sinkerball pitcher is a fools errand (unless the pitch is middle-in). Would like to see more folks do what Granderson did – take the ball the other way (or at least up the middle)
Yeah! I mean it’s not like they’ve already scored 3 runs against him…oh wait…
2 of which scored because Granderson used that approach
The 3 runs… 2 on the Granderson single (who’s approach I praised), 1 run on whatever that thing Chris Stewart did was.
The score doesn’t mean they have a good approach. Your confusing the result with the process. How many 2-0, 2-1 outside sinkers have the Yankees rolled over on already?
Your = you’re (yikes)
Honestly, I’m listening to the radio, and watching gameday…so I don’t get the benefit of really seeing where pitches are. I feel like the Gameday’s K-zone only gives you an idea of where the ball was, I also don’t get to see the contact they’re making.
By the way, with the lack of spelling, grammar, syntax, and semantic correctness by some people here being upset about your your/you’re mistake was the last thing I was thinking about on your comment.
+1
(not holding my breath)
I think Paul O’Neil would have sex with a milkshake if he could.
Then he’d have a love affair with an ice cream sandwich
/arrested development’d
And then slap some meat.
They need to feed these fuckers some snacks before the games.
Paul usually eats throughout the duration of the game! It’s amazing, actually, how much food the man consumes in 3 hours.
Aaron and Cobb. They showed this on MLB Network
Strike five by Hughsey!
Completely random factoid I heard today: Derek is 11 hits ahead of the pace Pete Rose was at his 38th birthday.
Ironic. They just said that on broadcast. The trivia question was which two hitter have more hits than Jeter at the age of 38.
You answered it already, I see…but Cobb would’ve been my only guess.
Michael Kay beat you to it 13489237498 times.
Rose kept playing until he was how old?
45, he’s the only guy in baseball history with 1,000+ hits after his 38
Yeah, and he had the benefit of being a player/manager too. No way Jeter gets to play until his mid-40′s.
Well, no if they don’t give Nima night off he won’t!
Technically, 45.
Technically, he’s still playing the game today.
69 i heard…he and rickey and steve finley were ancient when they called it quits
So sick of this “random ” factoid
I can’t believe Hughes is getting the curve over for a strike. That’s amazing. Makes him completely different pitcher when he can drop the show-me for a strike.
Hughes is looking pretty good so far.
Wow. Hughes has a 1-2-3. Yankees have no home runs with a 3 run lead…
Am I having a stroke? I smell burnt toast
If I live in Manhattan and I want to watch Yankee games on my computer, either live or the encore, what can I do? MLB.com won’t work if I live i an area covered by Time Warner, right?
So, do I have to be a Time Warner customer? And if I do, then I have to watch games near my TWC modem, right?
What the hell are my options?
Sorry to interrupt but right now my only option is to follow along with you guys or listen to Suzzyn and Pa Sterling.
If you have Time Warner, you can watch the games anywhere in home territory on your computer with Yankees on YES option via MLB.com, but you have to pay a separate fee for the season.
And to clarify, by “have Time Warner”, I mean “be a Time Warner customer”.
Thanks – if you don’t have TWC, you can’t watch them in home territory? That seems crazy.
Welcome to the MLB…
Correct. They are blacked out on MLB.com in home territory. So if you are a TWC (or any other cable provider that carries YES) customer and MLB.com subscriber, then you can watch any Yankee game from anywhere via the Internet, except for those that are on a national broadcast and not on YES or My9.
Correction; I just checked, and it looks like the My9 games are not available in market via Yankees on YES.
This game is My9 if you happen to have basic cable.
I think you can watch on the YES Network site for about $50.
Nope. This is Yankees on YES, and only the games broadcast on YES are available (and only if you are a subscriber to certain cable providers who carry YES).
Oh, thanks for clarifying.
If you’re looking to get around the local blackout with MLB.tv, you could try setting up an overseas VPN connection and use that to rout your internet traffic. I can’t personally assure you that works, but I don’t see how they could find you out if you did it. Of course, then you’re paying for the overseas VPN connection, but it’s a hell of a lot less than a cable bill.
SHAKES FOR EVERYONE!
Actually, I could use one of those Lobel’s roast beef sangwiches. Those fuckers are delicious!!
Seriously…I have one every time I go to the Stadium. I can’t think of a better way to spend money on food at the stadium than the Lobel’s sandwich and some Garlic fries. Throw in an 8 dollar beer (blue moon from behind home plate) and it’s the most delicious 30 bucks you can spend at the stadium.
I know, right? One time we tried those meatball sangwiches from the Parm stand, but I didn’t like it. A real meatball sangwich is round balls on a hoagie roll. These fuckers were a patty thing made of meatball meat (which was decently tasty) on a round bun.
ugh, this is why I spend the extra to either hit Hard Rock before the game, or the Lobel sandwiches.
Go to Billy’s!!! Their food is bangin’. Yes. Bangin’.
This is in the Stadium? What kind of food?
No, it’s on River St, I’ve walked by it a bunch of times, because sometimes I park a few blocks away at the courthouse.
Oh, yeah. We pass that place all the time, and never really thought of going in. Next time we’ll give it a try!
Nope, right outside the Stadium (right where Bald Vinny sets up his tee-shirt stand). They have a huge menu – wraps, burgers, etc. (That’s really all I can remember because I was overwhelmed with choices.) It’s a hell of a lot cheaper than the food inside the Stadium, that’s for sure.
Thanks! I’ll definitely check it out the next time I hit the stadium. I usually get a pre/post game beer at the place right next to Billy’s…the name of which is escaping me.
Oh, very cool! Yeah, I wandered in there before the last game because I wanted to avoid eating either Stadium food or getting a crapola sandwich at Subway.
Completely understand that, cause I’m not kidding when I say the Lobel’s sandwich, Garlic Fries and Beer cost roughly 30 bucks.
Daaaaamn, that meal sounds like a rootin’ TOOTIN’ good time.
Stewie!!!
LMFAO
weak contact FTW
Going to watch the resurrection of Christ (Rizzo’s first AB)
E6
Chris Stewart flies in the face of quality major league players.
Chris Stewart’s taking names right now
phil hughes fucking sucks baLLS. 2 hits in 4 innings? AND 57 pitches? he needs to be economical.
I was gonna go HAM until I read your name… Well played
Literally had the same reaction.
Haha +1
Stewart!
Happy birthday, here’s a strikeout…
Hearing Kay do television promos is amusing
I’d post something about the Red Sox/Blue Jays game right now, but I don’t want to jinx anything, so I won’t.
Just go look at the box score so far.
The Yankees gave away an ace in Aaron Laffey.
Fire Cashman
http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/.....=320626102
Let’s just say an old friend of ours is doing some work
I honestly forget which year Laffey Taffey was on this team.
Was it last year? Or 2010? Or was 2010 “only” the year of the Mitre and Gaudin?
Fuzzy memory FTW.
Last year
Last year. I remember he was part of those bullpen games they had at the end of the year, when they’d just throw a bunch of relievers out there with Sept. call-ups while setting up the playoff rotation.
I remember he came in against the Twins one game after an AJ Burnett blowup
Embedded Yankee?
Good times. Very Nunez-ian…
He fucking launched that throw to first…
#thafuuuchah!
Some teams would have to be reeeeeeallly patient with Damon for him to get 3,000 hits.
kotchman is posada slow
Mmmmm. Love those 3-6-3 double plays!
Sexy.
Soooo … when did Phil Hughes become a ground ball pitcher?
lol just let it happen.
yeah, I’m definitely not complaining
Same time Swisher became Willie Mays.
Hey, remember when Casey Kotchman was hitting .330-.340 for the Rays into late August last year?
That fluke has had a predictable crash this year. I guess being an “elite contact hitter”* doesn’t do much for you when you suck, does it?
*Thanks, Brian Anderson, for that GEM of “praise”.
Nice, Grandy. Now Run.
Well, not on that pitch, thankfully.
ARod once again proving we can win without him.
Is this an AB to AB thing, game by game, or what?
6 for 37 and the fact that we have played well when he was injured in 2010 and 11.
I miss Cody Ransom, we did so great with him
Look at Robbie showing the patience!
Stewart hit for Robbie
You know what would be awesome? If A Rod would start hitting…
Robbie stealing the Chris Stewart weak contact approach to getting hits
Productive
Tex w/ the sacfly…is that RISPFAIL? RISPWIN? RISPNUTERAL?
I’d go with RISPNEUTRAL
I was thinking RISPTASTIC….
Yanks breathe (rispire) easier now.
…….. Ummm. Small ball bitches.
More runs!
Wednesday afternoon games in back to back weeks? strange.
How do you hurt your lat??
Your asking me like I have lats….
That ball went SWISH!!!!!!
What are all these good things happening right nao!!!
Bronson Arroyo has a perfect game going against the Brewers through 6 innings
Of course he does.
Correction he doesn’t have one.
He hit Ryan Braun with a pitch in the first inning.
Still a no-no
nope. Braun was HBP.
Ok, but still a no-no, right?
Yep.
I just saw that, yea.
Bronson Arroyo and Coco Crisp have always been at the second tier of players i absolutely detest. The first tier being filled out by Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek. First time I have ever, and quite possibly will ever root against a perfect game.
Hitting!
SSS and all…but Middlebrooks has 1 hit and 2 errors since Youkilis was traded.
Tha Futuah!
The fatwah?
Damn that pitch ended up behind you Raul.
Good GOD I love HOPE Week.
the yanks are putting on a situational hitting clinic today
Shin Soo Choo is probably my favorite non-Yankee player right now.
So, are we all on the same page? Indians suck ass, right?
I can’t believe they are tied for first in the loss column. AL CentrAAAAl indeed.
Orioles are now 1 for their last 37 with RISP. It’s not a problem because they are legit and real. No worries
Anyone else hear the ringing in the background every three seconds?
HUGHES!
Huuuuuuuuughes
Sweet curve, Phil
I guess Carlos Santana isn’t so “Smooth” after all…
+Infinity
I wanted that curve when he got to two strikes and it worked
This is 2006 Trenton Hughes.
We haven’t seen these curveballs in a long time. That’s why he was such a great prospect. I wonder how he regained them after so long…
Well he did ditch if for a different grip for awhile right? Maybe it’s taken awhile to get the feel back of the old one.
Let’s go. Phil fuckin Hughes.
And with another nasty curve!
One week smoke free today. Just thought I’d throw that out there on account of the NY smokes commercial keeps badgering me.
Good luck
Srsly. Keep it up.
Thx guys
Congrats. It’s possible to fully quit and you are on your way!
A buddy of mine has started using those electronic “cigarettes.” He hasn’t smoked a cig in months.
That’s what I’m doing… I tried to smoke a butt 2 days in and gave up after 2 drags. Sticking with these…
Disclaimer: I am 3 good scotches or 1 good fight with my wife from falling off the wagon, but I think we might make it.
Congrats, dude. Rooting for you.
Damn, did not think this dinner would take me an hour to cook. I’ve only caught bits and pieces of the game, how’s Hughes looked beyond his line?
Really good. Nasty curve ball tonight.
Easily one of his best games of the year.
In control. Keeping the FB low, dropping the curve for strikes and burying it for swings and misses when necessary.
Whatcha making?
Hahahahah. Yeah! FOOD!
Steak, brown rice, and home fries. Easily the best meal I’ve ever made, if I do say so myself.
Dericious!
He’s been great
Nothing much has really changed about Hughes. He’s at his best moving the fastball around for strikes. Strikes on both sides of the plate. And now he’s working the curve in to excellent effect.
Thanks guys, appreciate the responses.
Now we get some of your steak.
Nah, its the home fries you want. They’re straight up bangin’.
Arroyo through 7. He got past Braun in that inning which is significant
Angels up 5-1 on the O’s. Matusz gone after allowing 13 hits in 5 innings.
Have to wonder how much longer that starting rotation can hold up. The pen is very good, but unless they make a deal for a starter, I can’t see them lasting in the race very long.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Os finish under .500.
I’d be shocked if they don’t.
I was trying to be kind.
+1
I’d think it is more likely than unlikely that they finish under .500 (even given they are 10 games over .500 right now)
Maaaaaaaaaybe they finish above Toronto.
At some point Hammel and Chen have to turn into pumpkins, right?
I feel old watching Cano give hitting advice in the dugout
“I mostly hit home runs because I don’t like running around the bases. You should try too”
“When a pitcher tries to jam you, just tuck your arms and swing as hard as you can, usually the ball will go into the upper deck.”
I love that they had a shot of him during God Bless America and he was talking and laughing to Ibanez.
‘Hey man, you feel like being in a home run derby?’.
why isn’t the arroyo no hitter on mlbn? would they switch over if he makes it to 8 or 9?
I think they usually cut over in the 8th.
think paul just said brett wise
yep
Nice!!
DWAYNE WISE!!!!!!!!!
WISE!
Holy shit.
I knew there was no fucking way he caught that!
We still don’t know. That ball could have bounced straight up and right back down into his glove. We’ll never really know
The replay I just saw pretty clearly showed it falling out of his glove straight to the ground.
No you’re right.
No way Wise caught that, but who cares. Same thing happened in a Royals/Pirates game a week or so ago.
HAHAHAHHAA HE dropped it!!
Wow, great play!!
or Great fake play!!
Jumping into the stands was a wise play…
HAHAHAHAH! What a fake out! Love it!
Is earning playing time
HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHES
Thanks to whoever put that ball in Wise’s glove.
This game has been extremely enjoyable so far.
yea for getting good breaks, i can’t wait for mlbn, espn, media to rant about how the yankees cheat and games are fixed and baseball is slowly dying because of the yanks.
You could see those little kids rooting around. They must have grabbed the ball and stuck it in his glove.
Taylor Green a rookie breaks up Arroyo’s no-no in the eighth
First pitch I saw of that game.
But hey, the first pitch I saw of Matt Cain’s perfect game was a fly ball that landed in Gregor Blanco’s glove. You win some, you lose some.
omg did that really happen lol
Home town fans the best
That’s hilarious. Someone legit put that ball back in Wise’s glove.
That was hilarious.
But for all the blown ump calls and bullshit that happens, this is one of those “well that’s the way it is sometimes.”
Hilarious.
Dustin Pedroia thrown out at home lol
It was a scrappy and gritty out though.
Cory Hart doubles to break up the no-no
YAY! ROD!
AN A BOMB!
Hahahaha fuck you haters.
Fucking A, ARod. Ruin a no-HR win, why don’t ya?
A bomb
Jesus. A man has no time to get home from work and have dinner anymore. It’s the bottom of the seventh!
In honor of this game, I’m baking my good friend, MannyGeee, some fresh pumpkin pie.
PHIL PHUCKING HUGHES.
AND ALEX PHUCKING RODRIGUEZ.
I have never been so happy to be so wrong. And I accept your pumpkin pie, but with my foot in my mouth I may not be able to fully enjoy it.
Cheers!
You can never not enjoy some pumpkin pie.
Well played, Tilapia… Well played.
warning track power
A-ROD! It’s been awhile!
Why is Joe Girardi holding a baseball?
That’s the fake one the fan gave Wise.
No ball in Wise’s glove.
Only the second deck? Stuart is right, he sucks.
ALEX
Suck it stuart.
Love,
A-Rod
what did stuart say?
Are you new to game threads?
that was a stat padding BOMB if ive ever seen one
The Yankees paid the fans out there to put the ball in Wise’s glove.
/ESPN
In that replay the guy in the red shirt was holding up a baseball. The booth guys are now wondering whether that was the foul ball and the ball in the glove was the property of whoever put it in?

sorry repeat
Was there anything even in Wise’s glove? I don’t recall him showing the ump the ball in the replay.
Yeah, he had a ball in his glove when he stood back up.
it did’t look like it.
Yeah, I think you’re right.
not sure Wise even had any ball in his glove
LOL Red Sox. Today is fucking awesome
https://twitter.com/JackCurryYES/status/217786787521769472
interesting, maybe ARod needs more off days
FUCK arod. only hits home runs when the game is out of reach
OMG!! They just showed how it happened! HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy shit that is awesome.
Let Hughes go all the way.
This.
wow that ump is hilariously incompetent. Wise did have nothing in his glove.
There was NO ball in the glove. What a joke that ump is.
So Arroyo went from no hitter to coughing up a 3 run lead on 3 pitches. That’s got to suck.
Yeah, Hughes!
I thought when he stood up from the ground, he had a ball in his glove.
This is in the running for my favorite game of the year.
Thanks Phil… Sorry I called you a pumpkin.
This just in: Phil Hughes is the motherfucking balls.
I don’t know a Phil Hughes. Phil Hughesllday is pitching tonight, however. I think you might be refering to him.
If what Mike N. is saying is true, that goes back to my original theory. Did somebody just stick a random ball they brought with them into the glove?
I think maybe he never had a ball in his glove, but the kids handed him a ball that he then displayed with his free hand.
Well now that ARod hit a home run, the Yankees are sure to win. Without the home run, they easily would have blown the lead and lost. #ESPNidiocy
Everyone’s in the party. Fans. Umps. hot dog vendor.
Athenian.
Can’t wait to see what Jimmy McNulty has to say tomorrow
I’m actually wondering where Hummingbird went.
You’re welcome.
Now this guy I can get behind.
Heh that was me.
I hope Girardi leaves Hughes in to start the ninth…
And now Jack Hannahan got ejected for arguing that call
Love the ump covering his ass by ejecting him. #SoCorrupt

The sky is falling…
Don’t worry, you can cut &paste that entire thread next time Hughes gets lit up and save us all an afternoon…
Hughes has no heart…!
So this is the new Hughes, hes either awesome or awful, doesnt seem to be an inbetween. It is fun to watch Hughes succeed.
That Wise play will be on the blooper shows for sure. I guess that’s why we have 6 umps in the WS.
didn’t help with Mauer’s ball in 09.
That was truly an atrocious call too.
DiMuro ejects Hannahan after completely blowing the call. hilarious.
Cleveland will blame their season on that Wise non-catch.
Hannahan got thrown out of the game for arguing the Wise ‘alleged’ catch? Good thinking, stupid.
So was the Wise “catch” a new part of HOPE week?
Fans giving balls back to the players when in need?
LOL +1
Ump HOPEless.
Choo has a freaking cannon. wow.
MORE RUNS!@!!! DO IT!!!
Cleveland should realize they’re out of it and trade us Choo for Dellin Betances.
no, for jack cust and russell branyan
It goes to show: ANYONE can be in first place in the AL Central.

The Indians will have lost 4 straight by scores of 8-1, 7-1, 7-1, and now 5-0 (and probably worse). At least when the Yankees were losing, they were semi-competitive.
They are the worst team still in contention, hands down.
Are the Marlins still technically in contention?
If they aren’t, I totally agree. Cleveland is awful. -54 run differential after tonight? Blech.

That was great quick thinking yankee fans put something white in wises glove. Lol this will be all over bspn the redsox home network tomorrow.
Over under on Jeffrey Maier mentions? They will petition for electric fences around the field to limit fan participation….
Not gonna lie, if this happened to the Yankees I’d start the robot umps petition.
E) Andruw Jones for HR Derby
Wise its ok you made your play of the game
Nice!
STEWIE DOIN WORK
Chris Stewart: RBI Machine.
Extremely Melkian day for Chris Stewart…
No jump throw for you, Assdribble
That was a catch about as much that CC is an ace. I know, late, but that’s my opinion.
Nice try troll.Everyone is in too good of a mood to give a sh*t. You get wifi under your bridge?
You should check your sarcasm detector.
You can go either way on those sometimes, Brian. You’re a sarcasm meter tester.
Ahhh, it was “Bran” who made that asinine post. My apologies Brian.
Everyone knows it wasn’t a catch. But get this: No one gives a shit.
People. Hughes is having a kick-ass start. It’s awesome and I’m enjoying it.
But frankly, I want him to have an above average season before I’m convinced he’s going to be an above average pitcher.
Just like I won’t overreact to a phucking awful start, I won’t overreact to a phucking amazing one either.
Right, that’s all anyone asks. It’s just ridiculous when people act as though he’s the worst thing in the universe after 1 poor start(which followed 5 good ones).
He’s not Cy Young, but starts like this are why people still believe in him.
Understood. I’ll enjoy the June run. I’m just saying he’ll have to do a little more to make me really believe he’s as good as he appeared.
Time for the human victory cigar, Freddy “the Freak” Garcia.
So, the Yankees apparently decided tonight to prove they could, too, drive in runners from third and hit with runners in scoring position. Apart from ARod’s home run, this is exactly the game the critics have been complaining the Yanks couldn’t win.
“good, now do it against a GOOD team”
- The Critics
Considering all he can do is hit for power, Mr. Salty seems to come up with an inordinate amount of clutch home runs, doesn’t he?

Yankees: too many homers, too many cheating fans, too many paid off umps, too much noise in the stands, too much salt on the pretzels.
THEY SUCK!
Aaron Laffey threw 6 shutout innings against the Red Sox. But the Jays could only manage one run of Dice-K and Jason Frasor just gave up a tying homer to Salty. 1-1
Blind squirrel. If the Red Sox are hopping for that bullpen to win it for them, they are gonna have a long night
Actually their bullpen has really improved with Scott Atchison (1.36), Andrew Miller (2.16) and Matt Albers (2.67)
Come on, do you really think they are gonna keep that up?
Cashman failed.
So Freddy to pitch the 9th?
Nope Cory Wade
Bah, wish Hughes could have started the inning and gotten a standing O.
You actually can’t do that anymore, MLB changed the rule. If the starter comes out and warms up before the inning, he has to face a batter unless the other team pinch-hits.
Andrelton Simmons might be my favorite player. Love that guy.
flaccidity imminent now that Wade is in
C’mon, Wade. Finish this!
Just watched the Wise ‘catch’. That was just a whole bucket load of awesome…
From the people in the stands looking around like they stole out of the donation box, to Wise playing cool and not saying a word to anyone and getting the hell off the field, to the 17 replays…. Just hilarious.
damn it
Fuckin Grandy took a step back. Come on dude. I want to defend you in the field.
He always does.
That’s how many outfielders are taught.
He has countered this by playing shallow but with Wade pitching and not wanting to give up an extra base hit he was playing deeper than usual.
Nice bounce back by Hughes — but I don’t know about the “big test” theory with this Indians lineup. And why pull him with a shut out going? 110 pitches? C’mon.
The Grandy weakness of stepping back before he charges cost us a shutout.
Color me greedy.
And wade gives it up again please dfa this guy in jul
He probably will be.
Hello Mr. Aardsma.
NOO SORIANO
Ok Corey wade… Let’s be done with this already. I have a pie to go eat…
lol Corey Wade
Prediction: Cory Wade will be gone once Aardsma is ready.
Soon, please.
OH, CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow, Wade has really been awful lately
Looks like the magic has run out on Corey Wade. David Aardsma, C’mon down!
I really wanted to pitch tonight.
Love,
Rafael Soriano
Criminy.
Cory Wade has fallen off the wagon HARD.
Y’all were saying about Wade? Just a few bad outings, eh?
Corey Wade just isn’t good anymore
Criminy.
Cory Wade has fallen off the wagon HARD.
Cory Wade’s been… not so great lately.
The ghost of Freddy Garcia…
I feel bad for the guy…if Johnny Damon’s ball doesn’t fall he has a nice, scoreless inning.
Bleh, I meant Corey Wade. Whatever, you gys know I meant the dude pitching.
This is obviously not a reason to feel bad for Freddy, but rest a assured there are plenty to feel bad for Freddy Garcia
DFA
And Wade puts himself higher and higher on the list of “guys we don’t trust when it matters”
Ball don’t lie. Guy gets ejected for arguing a bad call and his replacement hits a big HR.
Chapman did 2 front rolls after gettin the 3rd out tonight. Seriously.
Damn it Wade.
It’s WWWCWW.
I laughed
Bonus points for actually figuring that out.
Very glad that Wade has an option remaining.
Wade is all sorts of bad. Wow.
Woof.
Wade needs to take the dfa express. He has been garbage for a while.
ADe may bron the chopping block before Eppley, believe it or not. He doesn’t have the feel that he had last year.
Anyone else having problems getting their posts through?
My browser glitches every time I hit the submit feature. Kinda annoying, and causes duplicates, such as above…

He has options I believe. No reason to DFA a useful piece.
Yeah, well that’s what LA and Tampa said too.
so… wade’s magic is gone?
No, but his ass just crapped out Hummingbird!
A-Rod’s HR which was referred to as stat padding is now represents the winning run.
Dude is clutch.
7 for 38 but he made a nice play by the tarp.
As long as Chris Stewart catches….we are fine.
There’s a pumpkin on the Yankees but it Wade, not Hughes. He’s writing his ticket back to AAA when Joba or Aardsma come back.

Yep. I sure didn’t intend to post that verbose thing above twice.
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wade just helping Soriano pad his save totals.
My fantasy team thanks him
#UNTUCK
Soriano is on my fantasy team so thanks for the free save, Cory!
conspiracy theory: they are trying to pad Soriano’s save total so he opts out
Damn beat me to it.
I was going to say “the natural order things will return before Wade really becomes a chopping block candidate,” but I’ll now change that to….
YANKEEEEES WIN!!!!
PHIL PHUCKIN HUGHES IS A STAHTIN PITCHA!
How loud were the boos for Wade.
this is why the save is a great stat
Cory Wade with no regard to our Pythagorean winning percentage
Soon
Bullpen
Sori,robertson
Aardsma,Joba
Eppley Rapada
Logan
Thanks Cory. For last year. You are/were one of the few Yankee pitchers I can remember who could throw 3-0 changeups with the bases loaded.
Thanks for the memories….
Wish he had a pitch he could get righties out with. Now he can’t get anybody out.
Give it Wade a break. He’s in the wrong role, and had been used too much lately. Phil should’ve chewed off another inning.
Agreed. I think he rights the ship before its his turn.
Or maybe he just pitched WAY over his head for the last year when he’s probably just a fungible journeyman middle reliever.
I hope you’re right but I’m not so sure.
Hey, the more saves Soriano gets the more likely he opts out. Wade is just helping us out in the long run.
So Paul O’Neill rule in effect for Cleveland tomorrow thanks to Wade.
Disregard.
Time for some sweepage tomorrow afternoon.
And, on a selfish sidenote – as someone who is finally getting nuked in a fantasy matchup, thus far, I like getting the cheap save from Soriano. Every little bit helps in my quest to reach 12-0.
Nip and Untuck?
I made the mistake of watching this and now I’ve got it stuck in my head.
So I pass it on to all of you. Muhahahahahahaha.
Gotta love Hughes.
Now who were those commenters insisting Freddy be given a spot in the rotation over Hughes back n spring training because he “earned” the spot over Hughes???
Just got home from work, few things:
God damnit ARod, this was supposed to be a homerless win.
God Damnit Wade!
Wise’s “catch:” fucking awesome
PHIL PHUCKIN’ HUGHES
Finally: #WINNING
Is everyone that posts here 12 years old?
Yes.
blech. thought i’d be home in time to see at least the end of this game. it truly warms my heart whenever i see a-rod hit a hr lol. and that “catch” by wise… sounded like a great game! i phucking love this team.
