Game 75: Moving On

(REUTERS/Ray Stubblebine)

The Yankees lost two very significant players to injury yesterday, but the show must go on. The White Sox are in town to open a four-game set, the first time these two teams have played this season. The bullpen is a little worn out, particularly closer Rafael Soriano, so the Yankees are going to need some serious length out of starter Ivan Nova. A crooked number by the offense would help as well. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
Chris Stewart

RHP Ivan Nova

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Russell Martin Update: Martin’s stiff back is acting up again, particularly when he swings. Kinda sorta have to wonder if a DL stint may be in the cards.

HOPE Week: Chad Jennings has the details of today’s event with Glamour Gals, an organization of volunteers dedicated to building relationship and helping seniors.

  1. M-Three says:

Hopefully its only a 1 or 2 day thing for Martin and he can return by the weekend. I don’t to see him go on the dl. If he got dl’ed we would have to waste a roster spot on Cervelli and I think we can all agree that no one want him back here.

  2. Robinson Tilapia says:

You have to wonder if the “If we bring you up, you’re the starter” DL plan for Cervelli is still in play, being that he hasn’t exactly made the case to return to the bigs you’d hope he’d make. I do slightly miss the little fucker.

C’mon, SuperNova. Let’s keep this going.

  3. Jimmy McNulty says:

Question for the minor league buffs (i.e. Mike):

Will Billy Hamilton of the Reds make the majors next year?

    • yooboo says:

Possibly. He can finish this year in AA and start at AA next year and climb throughout AAA and major by the end of next year.

Of course, as long as he keep hitting and plate discipline sharp throughout in the minor complex.

    • Pat D says:

I don’t know, but I do know that the whole Billy Hamilton thing is freaking me out, due to the following gentleman.

At least the new one doesn’t play for the Phillies or Braves.

    • A.D. says:

He may make it this year as a Sept call-up to steal bases. But figure a legit call-up wouldn’t be until 2014

  4. yooboo says:

Martin perhaps get aggravated at plate collision.

He should be on 15 day DL and give the job to Cervelli. No sense to wait for Martin to get better because catching and back problem combo always is a bad news.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Or they can wait and see if it gets better so we don’t have to go 2 weeks with a black hole at catcher.

      • yooboo says:

I prefer a healthy chunk of 2nd half and postseason to avoiding 2 black weeks.

      • Fin says:

I thought Martin was a black hole at C? Unless a .193 BA and .317 obp can be considered something else. He might be better than Stweie and Cervilli, but I dont think enough so to really care.

        • JobaWockeeZ says:

Martin has a 40 point edge in wRC+ so it’s a dropoff. You’re underestimating how bad those two are.

          • yooboo says:

For two weeks, Cervelli can score and bring runners in. In long run, Martin is definitely the better choice but with bad back, I dont see Martin is still a better choice for 2 weeks span.

          • Fin says:

Like I said he may be better, but not enough to care over a 2 weeks span. I wasnt advocating them replacing Martin permanently. LOL, I do realize how bad those 2 are, I’ve never been a Cervili fan. Over 2 weeks those 2 are as likely to run into a walk or hit as Martin is.

        • Pat D says:

His OBP is still better than Stewart’s. And probably what Cervelli’s would be, too.

He also has power, which the others do not.

          • Robinson Tilapia says:

I don’t care how upset someone may be at Russell Martin’s performance. He is simply a better starting catcher than either of the other two.

            • Fin says:

Who is making the argument that he is not? What we are discussing is Calling up Cervilli for 2 weeks and let Russell heal up. Over a 2 week period, given Martin’s lack of production, I think there is virtually no difference between all of them.

  5. Cuso says:

    Good evening Ladies and Germs!

We play today; we win today.

  6. Cuso says:

By the way, this 2-week stretch is the period where are homegrown Nova & Hughes step to the forefront.

    Silver lining this biatch!

  7. Dylan Axelrod…that sounds like an excellent name for the adult entertainment industry…

  8. Christ I forgot how ugly that man is…

  9. BK2ATL says:

    Stewie stew guns one down!!!

  10. MannyGeee says:

Looks like Chris Stewart shook off the cobwebs with the throw to 2nd…

  11. Robinson Tilapia says:

Chris Stewart earning his keep today.

  12. MannyGeee says:

And in the No Shit Sherlock dept, looks like Nick The Stick Johnson jus hit the DL again….. Huh

  13. JobaWockeeZ says:

FanGraphs told me Dunn was done and Ichiro had bad luck and would rebound and I drafted accordingly. Good stuff.

    • Fin says:

Lol, I dont trust fan graphs when it comes to Mariners. Alot of Seattle fans over there and Ichiro is their god. Dont get me wrong, I love fan graphs but take what they say about Marniners players with a grain of salt, both good and bad.

  14. Hummingbird S. says:

soft tossing righty, A-Rod should gave a good day.. at least I hope..

  15. MannyGeee says:

    Alex is getting squeezed

  16. MannyGeee says:

    Yuk Alex… Just yuk

  17. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Sit down, Alex and think about how awful that swing was.

  18. Greg says:

I sense a Stuart presence coming

  19. Kramerica Industries says:

So, Sweet Lou in the booth tonight.

Can’t remember the last time he was there.

  20. Brian S. says:

  21. Looking at Rios’ numbers…when did he remember how to hit?

  22. Pat D says:

Anyone else think the umpire gave Axelrod at least two pitches that inning?

  23. Brian S. says:

So…what does everyone think about Lou?

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Sweet Lou? Has crossed into “Crazy Old Man” mode, somehow, but I fucking love the man. I’m glad he’s back in the Yankee fold. It just feels right.

      • Brian S. says:

So far I like him better than Kay or Flaherty but that’s it.

      • jjyank says:

I don’t mind him as the color man. He’s a little Captain Obvious sometimes: “that’s how you win games, having a productive offense.”

But he’s not bad. Not great, but I’ve heard worse.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

he’s good as the 3rd man in the booth. If it was just Kay and Lou I don’t think I’d like that.

  24. DERP says:

    Johnny Damon is still nasty.

  25. MannyGeee says:

Ok, I am gonna have to do it… Gonna have to do some periodic Draft check ins… So far Stern has been talking over straight booos for 5 minutes…

  26. Will The Thrill says:

Cool Tex. Just keep taking hittable pitches. Maybe your average will rise on its own.

  27. jjyank says:

Finally here. Other damn teller had a difference and had to look for it in his work. All I could think was “COME ON DUDE I GOTS A YANKEEZ GAME TO WATCH”.

At least I got here by the end of the first.

  28. BoringTeam2watch says:

This has to be the most boring yankee team ive ever watched. Yeah we hit HRs in waves but aside from that they suck. No chance in hell will the bats pick up the loss of AP & CC .. For years now theyve been the same dull no action team aside from occassional HR .. Yeah we get a lot of HR but im not really all that interested watching the same overpaid losers fail night after night year adter year. This team is good for one inning per game and the other 8 innings they are the suck. Theyve been blessed by good pitching to get the W .. Lets see GIRARDI the king dumb suck say AROD had a good AB .. Yeah right ! Yankees should sue AROD for his contract due to illegal PEDs same with Mark “the cough” Teixeira.. Lol@its the coughs fault.. He still sucks now. Heres an idea Cash sign Martin to a 3 yr and give him a notrade since hes so good. Lol that Martin declined that deal the audacity .. Does he really think he belongs in the MLB ?? His bat sure dont. All in all this team has changed without the boss ! Hal is a polo fan ! From owners, managers to junkies this team needs help but were gonna cut the budget. Genius!

  29. Tom says:

I think they will get this guy the 2nd time around the lineup… he is pretty much reliant on that slider and his fastball is not good enough.

The Yankees should pound this guy if they stay patient (and maybe sit on that slider here and there).

  30. The Scheister of Doom says:

    Axelrod is fucken hideous looking.

  31. MannyGeee says:

Anthony Davis, the basketball Gods will smile down on you for NOT wearing a completely douchey suit to the draft…

  32. Brian S. says:

It would be great if Youkilis GIDP

  33. Kramerica Industries says:

    Just as a note:

This game is on MLB Network tonight. Now – are you willing to get it on TV when the trade-off is that you’re stuck living in the Detroit or Tampa Bay markets?

    • MannyGeee says:

I am in the Boston market and I am getting it n MLBN….

But as an aside, I would not mind being in the Tampa Bay market. Because its TAMPAAAAAAA…. No snow, beautiful beaches, nine Yankees games in the AC every season, Steinbrenner stadium in the spring, and you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a chick with fake tits.

All in all, I can dig it

      • jjyank says:

Do the chicks in Tampa find dead cats a turn on?

      • Kramerica Industries says:

You failed to mention the oppressive heat and humidity present every day from April until September – in effect, the course of the baseball season.

I did a 9-10 mile biking exercise a few days ago, during morning hours. No problems afterwards.

I did a 3 mile biking exercise this afternoon. By the time I was done, my legs were absolutely killing me.

I know there was a heat wave in New York last week, and with lack of AC, it feels even worse. The concrete traps everything. Try dealing with that every day, with the only benefit being AC.

(as a sidenote – I’m an A guy, not a T guy. I like natural more than fake, and A’s aren’t nearly as likely to be fake.)

  34. MannyGeee says:

OK I officially hate the flat brimmed snap bat hats… They are the worst

  35. Brian S. says:

Nova is just helping out Grandrson’s UZR everybody. No need to worry about all these drives to centerfield.

  36. Robinson Tilapia says:

Closing up the office. I fully expect for David Axelrod’s ugly son to be crying into his mitt in the clubhouse by the time I get home.

  37. The Troll Monger says:

Big Teix hits a jack tonight, bet! Any takers?

  38. Greg says:

Didn’t Mike say he wanted Chris Stewart gone?

  39. Hummingbird S. says:

Derek DP.. so predictable. Thankfully the ump is blind

  40. Pat D says:

    Jeez, he was out.

  41. The Troll Monger says:

Why doesn’t Stewart start moving forward?

  42. MannyGeee says:

Axelrod is putting on a clinic…. On looking like a gargoyle

  43. Greg says:

I had a feeling they would struggle a bit against Axelrod. Pitcher they’ve never seen before and has a good changeup and slider.

  44. Pat D says:

Wow, I actually correctly guessed the Simon & Garfunkel trivia answers.

  45. nsalem says:

Mrs Robinson (about Frank Robinson’s wife)
Bridge over Trouble Waters (about not having a set-up man for Mo)
    don’t know the other one

  46. MannyGeee says:

David Stern…. King of the trolls

  47. Pat D says:

O’Neill is trying to cop a feel, methinks.

  48. Brian S. says:

Is Nova’s slider his only good pitch?

  49. MannyGeee says:

And first ass ugly suit of the night? Dion Waiters, in a powder blue double breasted thing with a creamcicle tie.

    Mozel tov!

  50. Hummingbird S. says:

    too many baserunners so far..

  51. Dan in Atlanta says:

What a surprise, Swish doing charity work with the Yankees. Seriously, he needs to stay here, he loves being a Yankee and is a credit to the organization, just like Granderson.

    • jjyank says:

I really love Swisher. He’s a good player, and I love his personality. He’s really seemed to thrive in New York. I hope he doesn’t price himself out of NY, because I really want him resigned as well. From what I can tell, he’s the happiest person in the world and loves everything about life. I dig it.

  52. Brian S. says:

Why throw the fastball 0-2? God damn Nova.

    • Mike Axisa says:

Chris Stewart is great at calling the pitcher’s third best pitch with two strikes.

    • Tom says:

It was a slider/cutter. (the hard variety – I think Nova calls it a slider, but it’s really a cutter I think)

It was not the 4 seamer though.

    • Will The Thrill says:

Seriously. When a Yankee pitcher gives up a hit with two strikes and three balls or less I literally yell at my tv “Why would you throw him something hittable?!”.

  53. Tom says:

Terrible 0-2 pitch on a guy that will swing at anything…. he didn’t hit it hard but 0-2 you also don’t want to let him hit it the other way either.

  54. Will The Thrill says:

And Nova giving up extra base hits and having to pitch out of jams hasn’t changed. Good ol’ Ivan.

  55. Ivan Nova is about to pull a Roberston level Houdini act.

  56. MannyGeee says:

Hella throw by the Grandyman, holding Konerko at 3rd.

    • jjyank says:

Well it was way offline, so he would have scored. But as far as the throw being a deterrent, goes, strength is all that really matters, so it worked.

  57. Pat D says:

    Konerko would have scored.

  58. Greg says:

And that’s why I’m not concerned yet. Konerko has no speed at all

    • Rocky Road Redemption says:

You, Sir, fascinate me as a poster. There are times where you’re so over the top negative I’m convinced you’re a troll, and then there are times like this where nothing that happens can sway your faith in the team.

You are an enigma, but certainly no troll.

  59. Cy Pettitte says:

I can’t believe he got out of that without allowing a run

  60. Pat D says:

Damn, I thought that was a hit and it ends up being a DP.

    Thanks, Rios!

  61. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, that was a lucky inning.

  62. jjyank says:

Poor baserunning by Rios, that ball was hit RIGHT at Cano.

  63. Brian S. says:

Cano is awesome. We are going to get three really awesome prospects when we trade him this winter.

  64. MannyGeee says:

Alex! That was the most boring double I have ever seen…

  65. Hummingbird S. says:

    nice hitting alex

  66. The Troll Monger says:

A-Rod looking like his early to mid-thirties version today!

  67. Greg says:

I wouldnt say it was RISP failure tonight and more like BaBip failure

  68. Brian S. says:

Are we really not going to score here?

  69. MannyGeee says:

Damian Lillard in the lead for the asshole suit award for the draft.. Checkered black & white, red tie and hankercheif.

  70. Let’s be real…I love Garcia, and I hope he pitches well, but what are John and Suzyn smoking that they think he’s going to pitch well?

  71. Brian S. says:

    Teixeira sucks

  72. Fuck…come on Chavez…you know to take a strike in that situation…

  73. Brian S. says:

Why the fuck did Chavez let up?

  74. Hummingbird S. says:

no more indians staff, back to rispfail.. also, awful AB by Chavez

  75. Greg says:

I want to be confident about this team, but people on here are making it very hard for me.

    • jjyank says:

Oh come one Greg, there are plenty of optimists around here to cheer your up. The Yanks have been playing great baseball for a month now, just enjoy it.

    • Pat D says:

Get a hold of yourself, man!

    • Will The Thrill says:

I don’t think you realize how good we have it. First place and up on everyone by 5+ games. Yeah our hitting and pitching are having problems but no team is perfect. I think you need to be a Phillies fan for a week so that you can appreciate how good it is to be a Yankee fan.

  76. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Holy shit…Chavez’s running was Posada-like. I thought that was an easy infield hit if he really ran it out, but it wasn’t even close.

  77. Bunt Gardner says:

I don’t know what is worse…not watching the game at all or watching the game on WGN.

  78. Will The Thrill says:

That was an especially painful RISP Fail.

  79. Greg says:

Both teams putting runners and on and failing to capitalize

  80. Mike Axisa says:

Hard contact, out. Hard contact, out. Hard contact, out. Hard contact, out…

  81. Kramerica Industries says:

    Showing those 2002 ALDS highlights…

    Fuck you YES.

  82. Mike Axisa says:

That hard contact won’t find a glove.

  83. Brian S. says:

  84. Kramerica Industries says:

Alejandro de Aza hitting a moonshot.

    Yeah, ok.

  85. MannyGeee says:

WE HAVE A NEW LEADER! Terrence Ross, #8 pick, silver suit, blue & white checkered shirt, LIME GREEN bow tie.

  86. Hummingbird S. says:

lets hope the offense can solve Sandy koufax jr.

  87. The Troll Monger says:

Bad Nova! Bad! Now sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done!

  88. Will The Thrill says:

Damn. This game feels an awful lot like the Cubs games last year where Doug Davis owned the Yankees for a game.

  89. Brian S. says:

You can’t blame the offense. Dylan Axelrod is someting fierce.

  90. Tom says:

Nova’s been getting hammered tonight (yes I’m aware he’s given up just 1 run before some fool posts that)

Nealy every ball in play has been a rocket… and most have been on his fastball – his command is not good tonight. I also think he has yet to throw a changeup all night.

  91. Pat D says:

Jeez. Can the few hard hits the Yankees get start falling.

  92. Will The Thrill says:

We’re getting Ivan Nova’d by Axelrod.

  93. MannyGeee says:

There’s an excuse me hit from Curtis… Now time for good A Rod to make a showing.

  94. The Troll Monger says:

Axelrod looks like the UGA mascot.

  95. Nice…I thought it was gone off the bat, but that’s good too.

  96. Pat D says:

How the hell did that not leave?

  97. Greg says:

If De Aza made that catch…

  98. The Troll Monger says:

STU-ART?!? WHERE ARRRRRRE YOU?!? C’mon out!!!

  99. Brian S. says:

look at arods slugging percentage he sucks…

  100. Pat D says:

“And that’s foul. Thank you very much!”

  101. Cy Pettitte says:

  102. Need Pitching says:

    En Fuego

  103. ROBBIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAVE SOME RIBBIES!!!!

  104. Greg says:

As soon as I saw the pitch. I said “Mistake”

  105. Pat D says:

“And that is gonna be up the gap. Yankees lead 2-1.”

Absolutely no passion in the voice, completely monotone.

  106. Brian S. says:

Bobinson Cano wants to keep being the leader in Al fWAR

  107. Will The Thrill says:

Woo RISP success! I’m really hoping we don’t lose this one. Would be nice to widen our division lead since it looks like Tampa and Baltimore are gonna lose.

  108. I’m ecstatic to have the lead, and that Robbie is just unconscious at the plate right now, but am I the only one still trying to figure out how Alex’s double wasn’t like 40ft out?

  109. Hummingbird S. says:

    finally the hits fell in!

  110. Brian S. says:

    Teixeira again.

  111. Brian S. says:

    The fuck Nova.

  112. Tom says:

I think some of the Yankees have finally started to sit slider on this guy… Normally you shouldn’t do that, but that’s all this guy is throwing when he’s behind or has 2 strikes. The 2-1 slider is almost automatic and he’s more likely than not to throw a 2-2 or 3-2 slider (though with 2 strikes you have to protect).

I thought they would figure this out the 2nd time through the lineup… it looks like they have the 3rd time through as everyone but Tex hit the ball on the screws in their 3rd AB

  113. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

    Buckle down Nova!!!

  114. Kramerica Industries says:

Not really feeling the Paul Konerko HOF disucssion.

  115. Mike N says:

Hey, guys! Just got home, and loving that Lou is in the booth tonight!

  116. Kramerica Industries says:

The BABIP gods have really had it out for both teams tonight, eh?

Yeah, that was a soft liner from Swisher, but there have been plenty others that should’ve fallen in.

  117. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

Let’s tattoo this real life Troll starting…NOW!

    Please? And thank you.

  118. BK2ATL says:

Nova’s getting lit up again, and receiving soooo much run support….. He’s so lucky.

    • No, he’s just getting lucky that the balls are landing in gloves for the most part…because everything has been a line drive off of him tonight. I love Nova…but this isn’t his best outing.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

        *Pitching to the score*

      • BK2ATL says:

Or maybe, he’s just pitching to the defense??? Hard shots directly at the defense, no?

Either way, 6 innings, 80 pitches, 1 run allowed, 5 hits, 3 walks. Not his best, but not at all a bad outing.

        • BK2ATL says:

          Make that 7 innings, 88 pitches….

          • Fin says:

its not a real test though. It only counts if he does it against an AL east team, and then really only the Redsox.

            • BK2ATL says:

              Okay, I’ll play.

The Chisox aren’t in 1st place of the imaginary AL Central. Doesn’t count one bit. Take away one more game from our lead in the AL East.

              • Dude, stop. I love Nova. I expect him to be a good major leaguer. But He’s been far from over powering tonight…Am I happy that everything’s finding gloves? Fuck yeah I am. But let’s not paint this as a masterful 8 innings of work against Murderer’s Row. He’s been good, but very far from great.

                • BK2ATL says:

Never said he’s been great tonight. But then, it’s not like he’s facing Seattle or Oakland.

People are spending more time on what he’s not doing, than what he’s accomplished so far. Sometimes credit is due.

Yanks 2-1 so far, through 7 innings.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

A pitcher only has so much control over where the ball goes off the bat.

Nova’s had better performances where he’s kept the opposition off balance and drawn weak contact. He doesn’t need to get lucky every start to do well. But he has gotten his fair share of luck tonight.

          So did Dylan Axelrod.

It’ll be interesting to see if Nova is pushed for the 8th, facing the lower portion of the lineup, because Soriano won’t be available tonight. So DRob is only pitching in the 9th, provided the Yankees are still ahead by 1-3 runs.

          • BK2ATL says:

Does it hurt that much to give Nova some credit for holding a 1st place team to 1 run through 7 innings so far? It’s a team effort and all, but he’s certainly done more than his job, considering the lack of offense, and more.

      • Mike N says:

        SEND HIM DOWN!!

  119. Brian S. says:

  120. OMG! Bagels! says:

Just got home. What’s going on in YankeeLand? Any mass suicides? Has Arod caused the planets to shift and not in a good way? How is Jeter holding up under the pressure of being the Core One and having a bad haircut?

    • jjyank says:

No mass suicides. A-Rod is doing well. And that bad haircut has gotten him laid by hot girls more than you or I could dream of. So maybe we have bat haircuts :P

  121. Tom says:

The Konerko discussion is better than the discussion they had a couple of years ago when the Yankees came into town.

Gordon Beckham was off to a good start as a rookie and they started the “potential young Jeter” talk and how he had all the intangibles… fast forward a couple of years and….not so much.

  122. Brian S. says:

I’m not sure I would let Nova start the 8th. But I’m not paid 3 million to make decisions so whatever.

  123. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

Hey-Zeus they are making some damn good contact off Nova.

  124. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

LAD spent 42M on Puig?! What the blood clot?!?

    • jjyank says:

Yeah, pretty much. Seems a big crazy to me. And seven years as well. The Cuban prospect thing seems to have really gone out of control.

      • The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

I’m actually looking forward to this IFA capped spending to start, it’s getting outta control.

  125. Rocky Road Redemption says:

I don’t even know what to say about this start. I mean, Nova gave up a ton of line drives and hard hit balls. And yet…here we are after 7 innings with a 2-1 lead, and Nova made it through.

It’s hard to bash the job he’s done, but you can’t really say it was a “great” start.

  126. BK2ATL says:

Where in the hell is our offense????? Only 2 runs off this kid???

  127. DM says:

Good job by Nova. Didn’t have his best stuff and had to deal with a hot YS — but still 7 innings, 1 run.

    • jjyank says:

That’s how I view it. he got lucky on some balls, for sure, but at the end of the day, he’s pitched a pretty good game.

    • BK2ATL says:

The best way to view it. Kid did his job.

Now if we can get similar performances from the rest of the staff until at least CC gets back, we’ll be fine.

  128. Brian S. says:

We need a home run Granderson

  129. Mike N says:

  130. Mike Axisa says:

Gotta send Derek 3-2, AJ can’t throw for shit.

  131. nsalem says:

Would love to see Skippy the ballboy at an Old Timers Game.

  132. Mike N says:

Lou just delivered the stunning insight that “you need some left-handers in the bullpen that can get left-handers out”.

  133. Brian S. says:

Jeter tying Ripken is disrespectful to Flanny.

  134. Brian S. says:

Granderson swung at ball four like three different times.

  135. Hummingbird S. says:

I know they are winning and that’s great, but a terrible game offensively. Some awful ABs with men on base (a-rod’s 1st AB, Chavez’s bases loaded AB, this one by Granderson… just to name a few)

  136. Time for the Bus ride home…hopefully De Aza or Dunn don’t ruin the ride.

  137. Brian S. says:

    I can’t watch.

  138. Tom says:

4 straight fastballs – to a guy who has shown he can hit a fastball….

  139. Ivan says:

    Nova you got this…

  140. Will The Thrill says:

I don’t know why Girardi let Nova face De Aza who was 3-3 off him today. Should’ve brought in Rapada or Logan.

  141. your mom says:

De Azhole is a pesky shit.

  142. Brian S. says:

    Stewart is so fucking bad.

  143. Mike Axisa says:

There’s that great Chris Stewart defense. At least we can count on him to hit an empty .260.

    • Greg says:

So you want Chris Stewart to die then?

      /exaggerating but stop hating

      • jjyank says:

        But he is pretty bad.

        • Greg says:

I just dont like people hating on other people unless they really deserve it. Chris Stewart is just doing his job.

          • Need Pitching says:

his job is to play great defense
            he really isn’t doing that

          • jjyank says:

I wouldn’t mind Stewart at all if his defense was great. But it’s not nearly as good as advertised. And that’s really what I want out of a BUC. I want stellar glove work, and a shot at the plate. In my mind, Jose Molina is the best BUC we’ve had in recent years. Stewart is overrated (on RAB anyway) at the plate, and he hasn’t even been good defensively. So why is he here?

            • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

They should claim the recently DFA’d Humberto Quintero. He’s pretty good on defense, at least in throwing runners out.

      • Brian S. says:

I want Romine to get better so we can have a different backup catcher.

    • DM says:

A bad defensive catcher batting an empty .260? I thought that was Montero?

  144. Need Pitching says:

    Chris Stewart: Defensive Master

  145. Kramerica Industries says:

De Aza has been a pure pain in the ass tonight.

  146. Will The Thrill says:

I see that De Aza has taken Brent Lillibridge’s place as the White Sox Yankee Killer™.

  147. jjyank says:

Thank you Nova, for picking up Stewart/striking out the gay lumberjack.

Big hand for you buddy. Hope Logan preserves the W.

  148. Robinson Tilapia says:

So we didn’t outright shellack him like I hoped, but I can now say that Dylan Axelrod looks like something crapped out of Orel Hershiser’s ass.

  149. Brian S. says:

Boone strikes out Dunn, IBB Konerko, strikes out AJ?

  150. Brian S. says:

Cody Eppley with the game on the line.

  151. Greg says:

Lou just totally messed that up

  152. Tom says:

2 out in the 8th…. why isn’t this Robertson?

1 inning guys can’t bridge across 2 innings and get 4 outs.

  153. Cy Pettitte says:

    wow Epply. that was impressive.

  154. Mike N says:

  155. Dan in Atlanta says:

Stewart really is a good defensive catcher.

  156. Mike Axisa says:

    Cody Eppley, True Yankee.

  157. Robinson Tilapia says:

This is Cody Eppley’s world. Everybody else just payin’ rent.

  158. BK2ATL says:

    2012 Cody Eppley = 2011 Cory Wade

    Ballsy pitching.

  159. Robinson Tilapia says:

“The World’s Most Generic Latin Man” on the mound for the White Sox.

  160. Athenian says:

Considering the WHOLE of the bullpen, this might be the best the bullpen has performed in years, especially considering there is no Rivera to slam the door.

Simply amazing the job they are doing.

  161. flamingo says:

After the gam, Joe Buck on why baseball is better when the Yankees are winning? Huh.

  162. Cy Pettitte says:

    insurance run!

  163. Greg says:

  164. Mike N says:

  165. Robinson Tilapia says:

    TOO MANY…..aw, fuck it.

  166. Dan in Atlanta says:

  167. Need Pitching says:

    Yeah insurance run!!!!

  168. Kramerica Industries says:

This is why having the player of the game options in a game like this is stupid.

Tex just entered the mix the first pitch after.

    • jjyank says:

I do agree that it generally bothers me that they do “player of the game” before the game is over. I know they want to allow fans to get the votes in, but it eliminates choices that would emerge in the later innings.

  169. Need Pitching says:

    uh oh, Where’s DRob?

  170. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

  171. Greg says:

You wonder if DRob is hurt again or perhaps Joe remembers that DRob blew a save, or perhaps Joe doesn’t want him pitching back to back days

  172. Dan in Atlanta says:

Rapada to close? What? If Soriano is tired, should be Drob. ???

  173. Brian S. says:

    He still sucks.

  174. Kramerica Industries says:

Eppley/Rapada for the dual specialist save!

  175. Hummingbird S. says:

maybe somebody else already answered, but what is up with no Robertson here?

  176. Cy Pettitte says:

so DRob is up in the pen now. why go Epply/Rapada/DRob instead of just letting DRob pitch the 9th?

  177. Brian S. says:

The fuck is going on in this game? Rapada?

  178. Dan in Atlanta says:

Girardi is clearly trying to steal one. He knows how to work a pen, so whether this works or not, I’m shutting up.

  179. Mike N says:

  180. Need Pitching says:

    for fuck’s sake

  181. Kramerica Industries says:

    Fucking Rapada.

I had a feeling he’d throw that away.

  182. Hummingbird S. says:

    wow, pathetic

  183. Greg says:

Now may I present “The Great Houdini”

  184. Brian S. says:

    Go fuck yourself Rapada.

  185. Mike N says:

Insurance run by Teix now looms large.

  186. wow says:

you’ve GOT to be kidding me right now… probably the worst bullpen management this year.

  187. Cy Pettitte says:

I felt that coming when I saw it rolling to Rapada. that throw is hard for a guy who throws like that.

  188. bill says:

    wow. that’s insane. houdini, gulp.

  189. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, Joe’s plan nearly worked out to a T.

Don’t blame Joe when the matchup he wanted hits into a GIDP, only for Rapada to fuck it up.

  190. jjyank says:

For the love of MO. Rapada, how do you not get at least 1 out on that? I hope D-Rob still has the Houdini act going.

  191. Mike N says:

I assume they will play as if there is no runner on third.

  192. Robinson Tilapia says:

Estimate on the number of 20/20 hindsight managers who’ll suddenly show up if Robertson blows this? I say 15-20, easily.

    • klemy says:

It’s not hindsight to say Robertson should’ve started the inning…the fact that he gave up the homer doesn’t mean starting the inning would’ve been bad. Besides, what’s wrong with everyone blowing off steam? That’s what game threads are for.

  193. Cuso says:

    What the crap

  194. Tom says:

Unless he had trouble getting loose in the pen, Girardi is an idiot.

  195. JohnnyC says:

The search for the elusive second loogy continues…

  196. DERP says:

    Fuck this

  197. Mike N says:

    Oh, fuuuuuuuuuuck.

  198. Kramerica Industries says:

You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.

Way to give away a W, assholes.

  199. Cuso says:

    Houdini is dead

  200. FIPster Doofus says:

    are you fucking kidding me?

  201. Need Pitching says:

    fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck

  202. Greg says:

And David Robertson didn’t do any better

  203. Yolanda says:

    what a terrible fucking pitch

  204. Hummingbird S. says:

what a pathetic way to lose the game… 9th inning, 2 run lead and you go to the 2 scrubs in the pen to put 2 men on… fuck joe girardi

  205. Nathan says:

Wow…from a double play to a three run shot.

  206. Arya says:

Someone tell me why Joe had those two incompetent bozos starting the 9th instead of Robertson. Joe lost the game.

  207. Athenian says:

well now that does what I said no good.

  208. Pat D says:

I think I just shit my pants.

  209. BK2ATL says:

    Well, that was interesting….

  210. DERP says:

Wise Chavez and Stewart next inning

  211. klemy says:

What was with the cute pitching changes?!? If D-Rob was available, he should’ve just started the inning.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

      • Mike N says:

        That was 5.

        • klemy says:

It shouldn’t count, because that’s just a fair assessment of the situation. Are you trying to say you didn’t think any differently or do you think you’re just too cool to ask the question?

          • Mike N says:

It was a reasonable move for Girardi to have tried to not have to use Robertson. It’s regular-season baseball, and you aren’t only managing to win this one single game, come hell or high water.

            • Need Pitching says:

I seriously doubt that’s actually what he was doing. I think he was trying to R-L-R his way through the inning and Roberston would have come in after AJ regardless of the situation. I think Girardi was scared off by Rios’ good numbers in 4 PA vs. DRob.

  212. Kramerica Industries says:

Not really sure who’s more to blame, Rapada or DRob.

Shitty pitch, or shitty fielding. Pick your cyanide.

  213. Cuso says:

I blame whoever brought up that Stat about the bullpen ERA in Nova’s starts.

    Nova deserved a better fate.

  214. Athenian says:

Look at the bright side, you all could be forced to listen to Hawk broadcasting the game. I guarantee you on that home run he came as close to flat lining as he has ever come.

  215. Robinson Tilapia says:

Ivan Nova wins too many games anyway.

  216. Pat D says:

So far I’m going to assign blame accordingly:

    Rapada – 45%
    DRob – 35%
    Girardi – 20%

I hope to rescind all of this come the bottom of the ninth.

  217. Brian S. says:

Not Girardi’s fault Rapada can’t throw a ball 45 feet.

  218. Robinson Tilapia says:

We need an official counter here.

  219. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

David Robertson can’t close in NY. He’s the Zack Greinke of relief pitchers.

  220. Kramerica Industries says:

Not sure what this numbering game is…

    • Greg says:

We’re counting the number of hindsight idiots that are coming on

      • Pat D says:

        I’m no hindsight idiot.

I didn’t like his decisions from the start of the inning. I just wasn’t in possession of my laptop to say so.

      • Tom says:

Ironic that the person counting “hindsight comments” routinely responds to someone else comments after the result is know with a “I told you so”

      • Kramerica Industries says:

You’ll see I said blame can’t be levied on Joe for that fielding error.

I understand what Joe was doing. Not facing Dunn/Konerko, I even understood why he did it. Alas, Rapada can’t field. That’s Clay’s fault, not Joe’s.

        • klemy says:

As for myself, had I been not just walking in the door, I would’ve questioned the call on here as I was doing to myself when Roberston came in after men were on. Logging in late though and getting called names for an opinion is why I’ve been avoiding the game threads this year.

  221. DERP says:

  222. Brent says:

    Fucking baseball, man.

  223. John says:

if girardi doesn’t pinch hit jones here he is a fucking idiot

  224. Brian S. says:

I hope Rapada gets beaten up in the team shower after the game.

  225. Ppiddy says:

“Here you go, White Sox. Please win this game. We don’t want it. Here. We’ll make it easy for you.”

    Absolute silver platter.

You won’t see this one on Yankees Classics

  226. MannyGeee says:

Lemme be enfirst to say it….

    THIS IS A RODDDDDS FAULT’!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That is alll

  227. stuart a says:

end of the day the offense sucks per usual.

rapada cannot throw that ball into center field. what a choke, classic side arm no athlete crap.

Girardi’s logic should be classic after the game.

    BAd loss……

  228. Crime Dog says:

Surprised to not see Andruw here. That must mean Russ is hurting and Andruws hitting for Stewart. Or something.

  229. stuart a says:

arod the great has 35 rbi’s that is pathetic….

  230. Hummingbird S. says:

Im not sure what’s so hard to understand… Sure Rapada and Eppley pitched horribly. But that’s who they are, bad pitchers. Had Girardi gone to the better pitcher, who came in after the mess, we would have had a better chance to win, therefore it’s his fault first and foremost.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Right, because Girardi threw that pitch and Girardi threw that ball into centerfield.

    • MannyGeee says:

But he pitched well, just mis threw the ball on the fielding… Technically, Girardi was ok in the bullpen move

  231. Dan in Atlanta says:

    Steal here?

  232. Crime Dog says:

I really really hope the Yankees aren’t playing for one run. Who’s left in the pen, Igarashi?

  233. Mike N says:

  234. Kramerica Industries says:

    Well, no double plays, Eric.

  235. MannyGeee says:

    Wise setting the table, baby!

  236. Hall and Nokes says:

Wise is making a surprising amount of progress towards True Yankee status.

  237. Just got home…what happened?!!?

    • Greg says:

Joe was trying to sneak a save without using Robertson. Clay Rapada blew a DP in the ninth and Robertson gave up a 3 run bomb to Vicedo

      • Ugh…if you’re going to do that, at least use your best available pitcher (Logan) and not do the whole match up bullshit.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

…and then Greg and I started counting trolling, but Greg counted Pat D.

      • Need Pitching says:

“Joe was trying to sneak a save without using Robertson”

Stop saying that. That’s what you think he was doing. I seriously doubt that’s what he was actually doing. I firmly believe Roberston would have come in when he did regardless of what the first 2 batters did that inning. It appeared Joe was trying to matchup lefty/righty (and maybe avoid using Robertson against Rios), not trying to completely avoid DRob.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

If Robertson was going to pitch anyway, surely he would’ve come in at the start, right?

‘Cuz otherwise, that would be the most pointless thing I’ve ever seen.

          • Need Pitching says:

and Joe just said DRob would have come in with 2 outs

            • Kramerica Industries says:

Then that makes no sense as far as I’m concerned.

Might as well just him pitch the entire inning, if he’s going to pitch. DRob is a lefty/righty guy, not a specialist mix and match.

        • There is 0 reason Roberston shouldn’t have started the inning. You don’t mix and match in the 9th. especially if you have a D-Rob in the pen, who Ks lefties and righties regardless of handedness.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

We were having such a nice time…

  238. Crime Dog says:

    Dewayne Wise’s bunt…

  239. Brian S. says:

    Jeter still needs that walkoff.

  240. Dan in Atlanta says:

    run here

  241. Kramerica Industries says:

    Wise caught napping.

    What a break.

  242. John says:

whos our catcher if this goes extras??

  243. Ppiddy says:

Is this the little league channel?

  244. Dan in Atlanta says:

    k or dp?

  245. Mike N says:

    C’mon, Andruw!

  246. MannyGeee says:

Interesting. What happens on a double here? Who catches? Martin?

  247. Cy Pettitte says:

    super AB Andruw.

  248. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, Andruw, I wonder what you were looking at…

  249. MannyGeee says:

    Andruw Jones… Fastball hitter.

  250. Athenian says:

    Who wanted Jones to hit?

  251. Greg says:

Basically the Yankees didnt deserve to win the game anyway. White Sox were hitting the ball hard

  252. Brian S. says:

    lol Jones

  253. DERP says:

    Steal here

  254. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Andruw Jones makes his bones.

  255. Pat D says:

    Terrible AB by Jones.

  256. Ppiddy says:

    This is pathetic

  257. That was a terrible at-bat ‘druw.

  258. Cy Pettitte says:

    god dammit

  259. Mike N says:

    OH, MAN!!!!!!!!!! SO CLOSE!!!!

  260. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Another streak ended with a very winnable game. With 2 starters gone gonna be a struggle to hold onto that 5 game cushion

  261. Kramerica Industries says:

    Oh fuck that shit.

Last thing I wanted was a teaser like that.

  262. klemy says:

    Wow. that’s…..disappointing. Wave of emotion…fail.

  263. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Kay pulled a real Sterling there…I knew off of the bat that wasn’t even close.

  264. BK2ATL says:

Put that loss squarely on Girardi.

    I’m out.

  265. Pat D says:

I knew that wasn’t going out off the bat.

Well, they’d best come back and look sharp tomorrow. Don’t feel like watching them get shut down by Quintana or whatever his name is.

  266. Greg says:

    Shades of Detroit last year.

They didnt deserve to win tonight

  267. Ppiddy says:

That was one of the worst losses I’ve seen in a long time

  268. widget says:

how you gonna waste a lead off single?

  269. wow says:

    ugh just unreal.

  270. flamingo says:

    I seriously hate Michael Kay.

  271. Mike N says:

Well, there are always gonna be some painful losses like this over the course of a season.

  272. DERP says:

Tough loss, but it happens. Still five up and the Orioles are fading fast.

  273. klemy says:

I’m not even going to the point of assigning blame. I just want to hear why the pitching went the way it did if Robertson was available. I’m sure there will be a reason behind it.

  274. Robinson Tilapia says:

It was such a nice party until Rapada started hurling balls into centerfield.

    Pimms. Gin. Simple Syrup. Seltzer.

  275. MannyGeee says:

    Wow, Jeter sucks cock.

And while I fake troll, Kenny Williams is real trolling, telling us that DRob is not cut out to be a closer…

  276. Kramerica Industries says:

I love Mitch Williams talking about “closers mentality”.

Considering his most notable save situation is immortalized by Joe Carter jumping around the basepaths.

    • Pat D says:

But he also saved 192 games in his career, which is 46th all time, so clearly he knows what he’s talking about.

  277. DERP says:

Fuck Girardi for throwing that ball into center

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

      lol I know, right.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

….and then he gave up that three-run dinger.

      • I just don’t understand why he didn’t go to Robertson to start the 9th. it’s not like he can’t get lefiesout. I just saw the replay though…Rapada’s little league coach is probably screaming THROW THE BALL TO THE GOD DAMNED BASE NOT TO YOUR FIELDERS.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

I actually agree with Greg. He was trying to pull through with the secondary guys until the errant throw by Rapada happened. It’s not a bad decision. It’s just one that grossly backfired.

          • I disagree, it is a bad decision, and while it didn’t backfire the way I would expect it to, it did backfire. Roberston threw <15 pitches yesterday. There is zero reason to not go to him to start the night. All I'm saying is if Rappada doesn't get a glove on that grounder and it goes into centerfield the decision looks as bad as it was.

          • Need Pitching says:

Joe said DRob was coming in anyways. Even if Rapada turned the DP, Robertson was coming in. If they’re going to use him anyways no matter what, why not let him start the inning?

    • Tom says:

Why was there a runner on first for Rapada to even have a chance to make that throw into center again?

  278. Ppiddy says:

They deserved to win until the top of the 9th happened.

    Poor Nova. He deserved better

  279. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Nick Johnson has been placed on the DL. Baltimore has no chance now.

  280. Robinson Tilapia says:

Tough to watch, but losses where I feel I can quarantine the problem perfectly are easier to swallow. Rapada/DRob. There you go.

Also helping, a nice tall cocktail.

  281. Ppiddy says:

    God do I miss Mo

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

….and, yet, when he went down, you probably expected games like this every other night. You haven’t gotten them. Thank Mo.

  282. Tom says:

3-1 lead in the 9th… how do you not use your best pitcher to get 3 outs? (well in essence I guess he did)

Girardi – snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Yes it’s hindsight but it doesn’t change the fact that it was a terrible decision.

    • Need Pitching says:

I agree terrible decision, but horrible throw, 3-run HR, and weak offense lost the game

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

      And I beat dead horses…

If they had won the game, it would have been typical Girardi shrewd bullpen management. Please.

      • Tom says:

No it still would have been stupidity… people try to force this hindsight narrative whenever folks disagree with Girardi. If you look above I was asking why not Robertson for a 4 out save.

Please…. stop with the hindsight narrative…. speaking of dead horses…

      • I personally would still be asking (in much more of a worried than the angry way I’m asking now) if DRob’s fully healthy, why wasn’t he out there?

  283. “We’ve only used him once back-to-back since he came back, and he was hurt.” If you don’t trust him to be himself then why is he here?

  284. Ppiddy says:

Girardi is trying to rationalize that abomination we just saw

  285. Greg says:

Bottom line. This and the vitriol reaction to it is why I am as negative as I am. If you wonder why I am so negative, maybe you should look here.

  286. New Girl says:

Longtime reader, first-time commenter…man, the WGN broadcasting team is awful. /complaining

As for the game, shit happens. Sucks that we were so close, but there’s still a lot of baseball yet to be played, and the Rays and Orioles both lost too. Nova did a good job, and despite the issues they had tonight, we still have a kick-ass bullpen, we still have a pretty powerful offense, and we are still the freakin’ Yankees, and winning is what we do. I’m pissed that we lost this one, because it was absolutely winnable, but I’m still feeling optimistic about the season. New win streak starts tomorrow.

  287. Ppiddy says:

Doom and gloom? Nah. The 9th inning was just an absolute head scratcher. Bad Yankee baseball all around — fielding, pitching, running the bases, managing … you name it.

No use putting lipstick on the pig.

  288. Brian S. says:

    Our offense isn’t very good.

  289. yooboo says:

I think Soriano should close this game. White Sox has good lineup so it is a chance White Sox or Yanks could win by 4 or 5 runs this weekend. Soriano should close the tight ball game like tonight. Robertson would be our best alternative closer for this weekend if a ballgame is tight and Soriano is not available.

Robertson was not ready when Girardi called for him to relieve Rapada. The confusion in role like that should be not repeated anytime ever.

If Soriano was absolutely unavailable then Logan should finish 8th inning and Robertson in to close the game.

  290. Pat D says:

I didn’t watch the post game.

So was Girardi implying he was afraid to use DRob in back to back games? How long has been off the DL now? And who’s responsible for whether or not guys throw back to back days, other than the starters?

That sounds like a lot of bullshit.

    • “We’ve only used him once back-to-back since he came back, and he was hurt.” When asked why he didn’t use Robertson to start the 9th. That’s an exact quote.

      • Pat D says:

Yea, that’s just a pathetic explanation excuse.

        • Seriously, I’ve already said it 5 or 6 times, but if you’re not ready to use a guy the way you used him before he was hurt or he’s not ready to be used the same way then he’s obviously not healthy yet. I understand bringing him back slowly, but he’s been back for at least two weeks, he’s coming off of an easy night last night. If my memory is correct he would’ve been facing 6-7-8 to start the inning…if DRob is 100% there is no reason he shouldn’t have been starting the 9th inning tonight.

          • Cuso says:

I have a feeling (although he won’t admit it) it was more about stealing the first game in a 4-game set without having to use D-Rob and Sori.

He wanted to save both until tomorrow and then Rspada whit the bed and forced his hand.

            • If he were to come out and say that I’d be a lot less angry. If D-Rob is healthy he’s not a guy you mix and match with…he’s one of the best bullpen arms in the game regardless of the handedness of the batter.

              • Cuso says:

Yeah, but he can’t come out and say that. That’s like a blatant insult to the other team. “I was trying to steal a game in a save situation using our scrubs because we held their bats down for 8 innings.”

Got 3 games left. Can’t give them bulletin board material. So, while probably true, they had to give the “Yankee reasoning.”

                • Tom says:

Yeah but look below… if the plan all along was to get through the 9th without Robertson, then the LOOGY (Rapada) should have been deployed in the 8th and use Logan (who can get righties out) in the 9th.

Even if Rapada turns two he still has to face a bunch of righties to close out the game. And going into the inning Girardi can’t just assume the first 2 guys would be retired, so there’s a decent chance you are stuck with Rapada against a righty with the tying run at the plate…

…. which means Robertson… which means you might as well have him start the inning.

The flaw in Girardi’s logic is that it was based on everything working out perfectly. And if that really was the plan all along Rapada should have worked the 8th and Logan in the 9th.

    • yooboo says:

If it was true then Rapada had to pitch against Dunn and Logan to close the game. Simple…

      • Tom says:

If Girardi was really trying to steal outs (and possibly not use RObertson), Rapada should have been brought in in the 8th to get the one batter out.

Even if Rapada had turned the DP, he still has to face 3 righties to get the last out. And lest people forget, the average (AVERAGE!) righthander against Rapada has a slash line near Pujols in his prime. Even with a 2 run lead that’s not a great option.

If he was hoping to steal outs in the 9th he should have flipped flopped Rapada and Logan – as Logan with a 2 run lead might be left in to get one last out against a righty.

This shows either an alarming lack of foresight (which is what I think it is) or Girardi just making up a bunch of BS to explain away a failed decision.

The one time I watch a Michael Kay game and he fucking LOSES HIS SHIT over a ball that no one thought was going out.
    Shut up Michael Kay.
