Yankees claim right-hander Danny Farquhar off waivers

By

The Yankees have claimed right-hander Danny Farquhar off waivers from the Athletics and optioned him to Double-A Trenton. Brett Gardner was transferred to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot.

Farquhar, 25, is very well traveled. He was drafted by the Blue Jays, traded to the Athletics for Rajai Davis, traded back to the Blue Jays for David Purcey, then claimed off waivers by the Athletics before coming to New York. He has two career big league innings to his credit, both coming with Toronto last season. Back in 2010, Baseball America said he threw a 92-94 mph four-seamer and an 88-92 two-seamer in addition to both a slider and curveball. Here’s some old video. Farquhar is strictly a reliever and one without much success above the Double-A level.

    Any relation to Lord Farquhar?

Does this mean Gardner injury is even worse or still on track to rehab around All-Star game?

    • Mike Axisa says:

Just a procedural move. Gardner has already been on the DL for 60 days so he could be activated tomorrow if he was ready. Still on track for after the All-Star break as far as we know.

I was dismayed to see the metal brace on Gardy’s arm in the dugout Sunday night. It has become such a drawn out injury after an initial day to day….

    What the farquhar???

He is in Double A? What is the point to have him aboard? Are Yanks planning to get rid of someone from the squad when Gardner returns within a month?

    • Cris Pengiucci says:

Not only that, what’s the point of bringing him on (at AA) if he’s got to be on the 40-man?

      • Fernando says:

You have to add someone to the 40 man roster, if you claim them on waivers. At least that’s my understanding. You can place them on waivers again and hope he clears to then send donw, but there really is no harm in having him take up the spot, as the team does not need it yet. Gardener, Aardsma and Joba are all at least one month away from returning.

Plus, there are more than enough guys in addition to Farquhar that can be removed from the 40 man when those guys come back and a 40 man spot is needed. Guys like Igarishi, Justin Thomas, Matt Antonelli and Wise are all candidates to get taken off the 40 man roster.

Wow the Jays and A’s really couldn’t figure out if they wanted to keep this guy or get rid of him.

  6. Fernando says:

Makes sense as they have around 6 pitchers on the DL in Trenton. Meloan, Orta and now Farquhar were just added in the last week. By the way, Michael Dubee was released yesterday by the Thunder.

Things must be really bad down of the farm in AA.

why not send betances back to AA theres enough AAA arms to start

I love when people criticize small flyers and depth moves for not bringing in a future HOFer.

  12. Groundhoggator says:

By claiming off waivers, they can immediately waive him. Then he’ll clear and ny can reassign him back toAA. Like they did earlier this year with AAA catcher

Is he Muslim? Will Pettitte and Mo be ok with that?
