2012 Futures Game Thread
By
The Homerun Derby and All-Star Game have gotten a little blah over the years, but the Futures Game remains exciting and the best way to see all of baseball’s best prospects in one place. I unofficially count 21 players from last year’s game who have since made their big league debuts, including 2012 All-Stars Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and Jose Altuve. Someone from this year’s game will be an All-Star next year, it’s almost guaranteed.
Unfortunately, outfielder Tyler Austin suffered a concussion when he was hit in the head by a pitch earlier this week and has since been placed on the High-A DL. Not only will he not participate in the game, but the Yankees won’t even have a representative because Austin’s injury happened on such short notice. Needless to say, that is a major disappointment and this game will have little appeal to the Yankees faithful. Feel free to use this thread to talk about the game anyway, it’s still a blast to watch. Here are the lineups…
USA Team (roster)
SS Billy Hamilton (Reds)
2B Kolten Wong (Cardinals)
RF Wil Myers (Royals)
2B Mike Olt (Rangers)
1B Jonathan Singleton (Astros)
LF Michael Choice (Athletics)
DH Nick Castellanos (Tigers)
C Tommy Joseph (Giants)
CF Anthony Gose (Blue Jays)
RHP Jake Odorizzi (Royals)
World Team (roster)
2B Jean Segura (Angels)
SS Jurickson Profar (Rangers)
RF Oscar Taveras (Cardinals)
LF Alfredo Marte (Diamondbacks)
DH Xander Bogaerts (Red Sox)
3B Wilmer Flores (Mets)
1B Jesus Aguilar (Indians)
CF Jae-Hoon Ha (Cubs)
C Christian Bethancourt (Braves)
RHP Yordano Ventura (Royals)
The game will begin a little after 5pm ET and can be seen on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com. Enjoy.

Well I had two reason’s to watch the game, now that Austin is not there I’m just waiting to see Dylan Bundy.
Should be three. Bernie! Always nice to see him.
I didn’t know he was the manager until I saw him in the dugout. It’s definitely a bonus.
I think the only reason I’ll watch is to see Billy Hamilton steal 7 bases.
This Yordano Ventura kid can bring it.
ok. I remain to wonder why the Yankees didn’t select Nick Castellanos.
maybe someone else knows this mystery.
Because they liked Cito Culver more. This isn’t rocket science.
I know the offensive returns aren’t all that promising, but how is Culver defensively? I hear conflicting scouting reports. Could he be a plus defender at SS?
He is projected to be a top notch defensive SS. He is already recognized by BA on arm and defense.
Money difference is the big factor.
thanks for help making my point.
They liked Culver better.
Castellanos made it known (through his agent) that he wanted a lot of money to sign and many teams were reluctant to draft him, even though he was clearly a top talent.
Going after guys like that used to be our draft strategy. Although it’s silly to be critical over a pick like that, especially since that was a really good draft class for us. Maybe if we draft Castellanos we can’t afford Mason Williams.
Cole does not look sharp.
Had flashbacks to the last time I watched Betances pitch…
Gerrit Cole has shamed our nation.
No Yank, no excitement. Boo
Thinking that the Dodgers and Dbacks game might be more fun to watch. Trevor Bayer’s pitching and it’s a good chance to see future YankeeTM Justin Upton.
That explains why Gary Sanchez was not picked. lol.
Is it me or what? When I see pitcher’s name with “andez” suffix, I automatically think of 95 plus mph heater.
I should really start teaching my kid a fastball, then.
Lol.. Go for it.
Billy Hamilton future pinch runner…
Hamilton jogged around for triple? Damn.
World defense reminded me of yesterday Yanks. lol
I am so jealous of catching prospects’ accuracy.
Bethancourt? He probably has a better arm than any catcher on all levels of pro ball, including MLB.
Saw Tyler Skaggs pitching. He is similar to Cole Hamels, whom I am not a fan of.
Solid low fastball.
Hovering change up.
Big curving drop.
Not my kind of southpaw repertoire.
Jonathan Singleton swings beautifully. Almost similar to Robinson Cano.
You can’t compare a Dominican to a black guy. Don’t you know you have to compare to what ever race the player is.
ha… when it comes to skin, I am basically blind.
Two things that separate both.
Singleton has an excellent OBP but is still struggling against southpaw (same side battle).
Anyone else hear Billy speak?
He sounds like he’s from Taylorsville, MS.
He was kind of the anti-Jeter. Crooked teeth, crazy looking artist’s beard, trailer park accent. Looked like he should be playing an instrument in a blues club in Memphis. And, no, I’m not knocking him. I actually liked him when I saw him being interviewed.
I guess USA does not really need Tyler Austin.
Messy game.
Is this like the NBA All-Star game and the NFL’s Pro Bowl where it’s all about offense?
Last year or two, defenses showed off athletically.
USA swings incredibly well this time.
Rick Sutcliff is crazycakes. Not what he’s specifically saying now. Just in general.
Jeez. Is there a mercy rule?
I dont think because they still have a plenty of pitchers left.
These kids are some of the most talented players in the world, yet it’s interesting to see how much polish is still to come between A ball, AA ball and by the time most of them will reach the majors.
AA and below kids usually go wild and are careless. For some reason, USA team looks intelligent and compact. I have not checked out rosters for level comparison but I feel like USA have more higher level prospects than World.
USA have 6 AAA. World nil.
USA have 12 AA. World have 15.
USA have 5A+. World have 6.
I guess it is pointless since USA’s AA players made most damage.
Now Cito Culver is a huge bust. lol.
Wow, the floodgates have opened.
nice that they let 12 year olds play in this game, too
Bundy and Castellanos signed for my dad and I at FanFest yesterday. Castellanos was a nice guy but Bundy was a 10 on the douche meter.
