Danny Farquhar clears waivers, sent to Double-A

Via Mike Ashmore, right-hander Danny Farquhar has cleared waivers and been assigned to Double-A. The Yankees claimed him off waivers from the Athletics earlier this week and then designated him for assignment when they claimed Chris Schwinden from the Indians. The poor kid’s been bouncing around quite a bit of late, so at least now he finally knows where he’ll be for the next few weeks. In theory, of course.

With the Yankees having the Major’s best record – the waiver claim is a great way to acquire AAAA players with options remaining, build up minor league depth where needed and not have to bid with 29 other teams. They know if they win the claim – they can immediately waive them (Farquhar being the latest greatest example)and have extremely minimal consequences. Additionally with over 50 people on the 40 man roster (gotta love the 60 day DL) – when you need to start trimming the fat – no one is going to care about these last 5 slots.
